What to Know

An action thriller that's neither action-packed nor thrilling, End of the Road wastes a pair of perfectly good stars on a bottom-of-the-barrel story.

Queen Latifah and Ludacris could make perfect co-stars in the right movie, but End of the Road isn't it.

Chris Hemsworth’s Absurd Nose in ‘Furiosa’ Was Picked for a Reason

This experimental, nightmarish series of shorts does cosmic and body horror right, this box office dud is actually john candy's best movie.

Netflix has released the trailer for End of the Road , a family road trip thriller with Queen Latifah in the protagonist role. The thriller will follow Brenda (Latifah), a widow who has recently lost her job and decides to move her family across the country to start a new and better life. Unfortunately, their journey to a better life turns out to be longer than expected as they come to find themselves in the crosshairs of a mysterious killer.

The two-minute trailer opens with a fast-paced car chase in the desert with flashes of a distraught Brenda before taking viewers back to the circumstances that lead to her anguish. The family of four (including Brenda's brother played by Ludacris ) is seen traveling down a lonely road flanked by miles and miles of desert. Their conversations reveal that the trip has lasted for three and a half hours and that their destination is Houston, a location that the youngest in the family seems to know little about.

As the trip continues, Brenda's brother expresses his reservations about their decision to embark on the journey, unfortunately, his fears prove valid when a stop-over at a roadside motel sees them witness the murder of an unknown man. What begins as a family just trying to do the right thing becomes a lot more complicated when Brenda's brother picks up a sack of cash belonging to the rampaging killer who appears intent on getting back what belongs to him. Despite the guilt of one of its own, the close-knit family will band together to defend each other against the killer.

End of the Road was made from a screenplay by David Loughery which was created from an original draft written by Christopher Moore . Loughery has made his mark in the thriller genre with an impressive list of works, including The Intruder , Obsessed, and Fatale . The movie is directed by 30 Rock 's Millicent Shelton . “When I initially read the script, I knew that I needed to portray this family as a regular middle-class family but also emphasize their experiences as a Black family traveling through the South," Shelton told ESSENCE Magazine of the upcoming film. Further adding:

“We really wanted to hone into the truth of that experience by making it relatable to what really happens in African-American lives in the United States. Through all these trials, struggles, and tribulations, the family still has fun and love for one another which bonds them."

While End of the Road is categorized as a thriller, Shelton says she was able to create "a new genre of film with End of the Road ," calling it a "family-based action road trip thriller" movie. "Having that combination of action and the heart of a family makes it really special,” the director concluded. In addition to the two rappers-cum-actors, Queen Latifah and Ludacris, the cast of End of the Road is fleshed out by Beau Bridges , Mychala Faith Lee , Shaun Dixon, and Frances Lee McCain .

End of the Road will be released on Netflix on September 9, and you can watch the trailer down below.

End of the Road

When you’re bringing together two outsized personalities like Queen Latifah and Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges for a family car trip deep into redneck territory, the least you could try to do is make it a little funny. But the Netflix feature End of the Road plays things more or less straight, eschewing comedy for a run-of-the-mill thriller that winds up being neither original nor particularly thrilling.

Related Stories

'bridgerton' star golda rosheuvel motorized swan wig in season 3 took two years to design, christina ricci talks 'yellowjackets' season 3: "it's going to be even more shocking... and brutal", end of the road.

What gives End of the Road some potential early on is its setup: Brenda (Latifah) is a recently widowed mother who can no longer afford life in Los Angeles. So she packs up the minivan with her two kids, Kelly (Mychala Faith Lee) and Cam (Shaun Dixon), and her pothead younger brother, Reggie (Bridges), to move to her mother’s place in Houston.

If you look on a map, you’ll see that such a drive will take Brenda and her family through plenty of desert and at least one state (Texas) that voted red in the last presidential election. Shelton and writers Christopher Moore and David Loughery milk that premise for all it’s worth — perhaps never better than in an early scene where Brenda faces off, and wisely stands down, against a pair of honky-tonk racists who try to block her path.

After that, End of the Road gets both serious and seriously silly when the family runs into a drug deal gone sour, leaving them with a stolen bag of loot (thanks to Reggie) and nowhere to hide. Enter Beau Bridges, playing a sheriff who’s been teleported into the movie from reruns of either The Dukes of Hazzard or Smokey and the Bandit , and who joins a collection of unsavory locals that also includes a meth-head (Tabatha Shaun) and a skinhead (Keith Jardine).

Like the writing, the directing is serviceable, with the leads doing their best with what feels like subpar material. The action sequences tend to lack verve and the locations — a roadside motel, a diner, a trailer park, a creepy country home with a dungeon — seem to have been chosen from a B-movie rolodex. Scoring is omnipresent but fails to bring additional thrills.

This, by the way, doesn’t mean that End of the Road is unwatchable, and if you’re looking for something quick and easy with some expected twists, it serves its purpose. It’s sort of like programming your GPS before a long drive — you always know where you’re going, all the time.

Lord of the rings icon open to reprising his role in the hunt for gollum…but on one slightly morbid condition, kevin costner’s 1987 espionage thriller is an overlooked masterpiece.

Queen Latifah embarks on a move across the country in the latest trailer for End of the Road. The Netflix film will surely make viewers' hearts race as Brenda (Latifah) and her family are mercilessly hunted down by a murderer who wants his money returned. The thriller centers on Brenda, a widow who recently lost her job and decided to move across the country with her children and brother to begin a new life. The official description from Netflix reads:

Queen Latifah and Chris Bridges (Ludacris) star in this road trip thriller about a mom of two kids who relocates across the country with her kids and brother. The family's move to the southland is thrown into complete chaos when they witness a murder on their road trip. Now, the murderer will stop at nothing to find them.

As the trailer begins, we see Brenda's family traveling across vast expanses of open land, making a trip across the country to Houston, Texas. Her children don't seem happy about the move, but Brenda is doing her best to keep her traveling posse in a good mood. Unfortunately, their drive takes a turn for the worst when they arrive at a roadside motel only to find a man murdered in the room adjacent to them. When Brenda's brother picks up a bag of drug money, a story similar to No Country for Old Men ensues.

End of the Road will arrive on the streaming service next month on Sept 9.

Director Millicent Shelton Says End of the Road is Very Unique

Millicent Shelton is quite proud of her work on End of the Road , telling ESSENCE Magazine they created a 'new genre of film' with the movie. The director has found success in countless television shows; however, she's looking to make her mark in feature films with the upcoming Netflix release.

A family-based action road trip thriller is quite the mixture, and Shelton will have to delicately juggle all of those genres if she hopes to create a successful film. Audiences can see the director's work alongside Queen Latifah and Ludacris when End of the Road releases on Netflix next month, on Sept 9.

Meet the End of the Road cast: who's who in Netflix’s new thriller

It’s not every day that you see a film led by not one, but two, rappers turned actors.

Ludacris as Reggie Queen Latifah as Brenda with the kids in End of the Road

If you haven’t heard yet, Netflix has a new thriller on its hands with the film End of the Road . The movie follows a recently widowed woman, her two kids and her brother as they take a cross-country road trip only to find trouble along the way. When we say trouble, we mean a murder scene, a large amount of mysterious cash and some unsavory and ruthless criminals willing to do anything to retrieve that money.

The movie is basically a cautionary tale to be careful where you choose to stop when vacationing and a warning to leave random money where you found it, shy of a shiny new nickel you make come across on the street.

End of the Road is now playing on Netflix, but just who are the actors bringing this story to fruition? Let's meet the cast.

Queen Latifah as Brenda Freeman

Brenda is a certified nurse and recently widowed mother of two. She tragically lost her husband after his battle with cancer. Looking for a fresh start, Brenda decides to move her family to Texas, but first opts to take her kids and brother Reggie on a cross-country road trip. Unfortunately for her, Reggie's bad decision-making gets the family intertwined in some criminal activity, laced with white supremacy, and she's forced to turn into a fierce protector of her family.

Starring in the role of Brenda is the Grammy-winning rapper turned Emmy-winning actress Queen Latifah. She rose to prominence as quite the prolific rapper earning a Grammy in 1995 for her song "U.N.I.T.Y." While the music industry may be where her roots lie, her talent as an actress has cemented her as a household name.

Since launching her acting career, Queen Latifah has led her own sitcom on Fox, Living Single , been nominated for an Oscar for her supporting role in Chicago , been nominated for two Emmys for her acting chops in Bessie and Life Support and she now fronts one of the most-watched dramas on primetime, The Equalizer .

Ludacris as Reggie

Reggie is Brenda's younger brother. Although he has the best intentions for his sister, niece and nephew, he doesn't have a track record of always using the best judgment. While trying to help his sister jumpstart her new life, he makes one huge mistake that spirals into a series of bad events.

Starring as the other rapper turned actor in the film is Christopher Brian Bridges, aka Ludacris. He rose to fame as a musician, eventually earning three Grammys. As Ludacris made his way to the TV/film side of the entertainment industry, he was quick to prove he has what it takes to make it as an actor, starring in Crash,   Hustle & Flow , shows like   Law & Order: SVU and has been prominently featured in the hit Fast & Furious movies.

Queen Latifah and Ludacris as Brenda and Reggie in End of the Road

Beau Bridges as Captain J.D. Hammers

At first, the Arizona state trooper comes off as the epitome of the small-town cop archetype. However, it's not long before the "good" officer reveals that underneath his exterior is a more duplicitous human being that proves to be absolutely no help to Brenda during her terrifying experience in the middle of nowhere.

Beau Bridges plays the intriguing and layered Hammers. Bridges is a long-time actor in Hollywood, having over 200 acting credits to his name according to IMDb . Over the years, he’s managed to earn an impressive 16 Emmy nominations, winning three of his nominated categories. His most recent list of acting credits includes One Night in Miami, Greenleaf , Homeland and Goliath. He is also the brother of The Old Man star Jeff Bridges.

Frances Lee McCain as Val

Val is J.D.'s dutiful wife. Not only does she support her husband in all that he does, but she's also a willing participant. While she's no hero in the movie, no one can ever question her loyalty to her husband.

Frances Lee McCain plays Val. McCain is also not a novice in Hollywood having been in a number of movies and television shows. Her latest work includes roles as Marge in The Comeback Trail , as Sandra in The Girlfriend Experience and as Judge Chapek in Better Call Saul .

Mychala Faith Lee and Shaun Dixon as Kelly and Cam

Kelly and Cam are Brenda's daughter and son respectively. Kelly is the older of the two siblings and appears to embody some of Reggie's characteristics in that she is not one to take being bullied by anyone. This was quite evident in her confrontation with a group of racist jerks. However, she's a bit more level-headed than her uncle.

Cam on the other hand is perhaps the biggest victim in the film, as he's the one who winds up in the gravest amount of danger at the hands of the evil forces at play. That's a tough way to go for the youngest member of the Freeman clan.

Brenda’s daughter and son are played by Mychala Faith Lee and Shaun Dixon respectively. Both are pretty new to the industry. For Lee, her most notable credit has been playing Trini Killebrew in Truth Be Told , while for Dixon it has been starring as Jay/Leon/Isaiah in Dhar Mann .

If you haven’t already, be sure you check out End of the Road now streaming on Netflix.

Terrell Smith has a diverse writing background having penned material for a wide array of clients including the federal government and Bravo television personalities.  When he’s not writing as Terrell, he’s writing under his pseudonym Tavion Scott, creating scripts for his audio drama podcasts. Terrell is a huge fan of great storytelling when it comes to television and film. Some of his favorite shows include  The Crown ,  WandaVision , Abbot Elementary   and  Godfather of Harlem .  And a fun fact is he's completely dialed into the TLC  90 Day Fiancé  universe.

Road Trip Thriller 'End of the Road' Trailer Featuring Queen Latifah

by Alex Billington August 15, 2022 Source: YouTube

End of the Road Trailer

"It's us or them!" Netflix has revealed a trailer for End of the Road , a road trip thriller from TV filmmaker Millicent Shelton landing on Netflix next month. Queen Latifah and Chris Bridges star in this road trip thriller about a mom of two kids who relocates across the country with her kids and brother. The family’s move to the southland is thrown into complete chaos when they witness a murder on their road trip. Now, the murderer will stop at nothing to find them. Sounds like a very original concept, right? Alone in the New Mexico desert, they have to fight for their own lives when they become the targets of this mysterious killer. Directed by Millicent Shelton, End of the Road also stars Beau Bridges , Mychala Faith Lee , Shaun Dixon , and Frances Lee McCain . This looks like a generic action thriller with that Netflix sheen, but I'm hoping there's a few unique twists and turns. At least this trailer doesn't give away everything - take a look.

Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Millicent Shelton's End of the Road , from Netflix's YouTube :

Meagan Navarro wrote in her mini-review out of Popcorn Frights 2023 , “ Director Anthony Cousins takes on the cryptic Frogman via found footage in his feature directorial debut, co-written with John Karsko . In it, a trio of friends embarks on one final filmmaking hoorah before life takes them in separate directions. But in their bid to make one last attempt to capture the elusive cryptid Frogman on camera, they find far more than they ever bargained for.”

“ Frogman  adheres to the standard found footage blueprint and tropes, drawing heavily from  The Blair Witch Project  and  Willow Creek as the trio starts by interviewing Loveland, Ohio, locals about their town’s cryptid mascot,” Meagan’s review continues. “Friction between the friends gets brought to the surface as they get closer to the truth. While Cousins’ debut doesn’t offer any narrative surprises and makes strange style choices for the camera, it makes up for it with impressive creature effects. The more the humans invade the Frogman’s turf, the more delightfully weird and gnarly things get. It’s an SFX showcase with delightfully deranged mythology that makes this one worth the price of admission.”
