Explanation needed for review

Explanation needed - I gave this trip three stars partly because our first trip with ILT was so great. This trip was more custom through the northern lakes and felt less organized. When we asked for several lake boat tours with Prosecco to tour the lake, we got several small boats with no lake tour just transportation. Had a cooking class and didn't know we could organize the menu so instead cooked food none of the family enjoyed. The coordination of all the travel was impeccable as usual. Will use again but will be more explicit in the needs and desires.

All went perfectly

We had no issues. All aspects of our trip went flawlessly. Tour guides were all excellent. Cooking class chef was a real treat. All the drivers were extremely professional, and all the restaurants and restaurant recommendations were wonderful. Transfers happened without any problems.

Gennaro did an excellent job planning…

Gennaro did an excellent job planning our 2 week Tuscan vacation based on my input. Loved the lodging variety, the wineries and lunches, the private guides as needed, and our drivers. He planned for the right amount of free days vs scheduled days. When we plan a future trip, I will plan for 1 winery/lunch stop per day and then spend the afternoon wandering in a nearby town. Other than that, I would plan the exact same itinerary.

Exceeded expectations for these seasoned travelers.

We were pleasantly surprised that our first private tour vacation exceeded expectations! Italy Luxury Tours found us the best hotels, superb guides, some fun drivers (Simone and Roberto in particular) and made our days stress-free. Not having to know which line to stand in or where to park was worth it alone, but the history and art we experienced were amazing. I really can't think of a negative thing to say. We will be using this company again.

Overall the trip was good

Overall the trip was good, not great, and for the price, I was expecting a 5-star experience. We had an issue with our hotel in Rome. There were ants in the bed and mold on the walls. We tried moving hotels but due to the increase in summer tourism, there were no other hotels available. In the future, I would recommend Italy Luxury Tours be more proactive and ensure their hotel partners keep a better standard.

Italy without a hitch

Gennaro customized our family trip to Italy. He incorporated every request from Lake Como to Rome. Traveling with 8 family members, it’s difficult to make everyone happy, but this trip accomplished that and more! We’ve traveled around the world, and we’re still surprised with the service and attention we received. Everyone from the tour guides, drivers, hotels, airport assistance was first class. There is not a thing I would've changed. I would recommend Italy Luxury Tours to the most sophisticated traveler to first time international traveler. Thank you again for making our trip go off without a hitch and for all the priceless memories!!

Absolutely loved the private Italy tour

LOVED LOVED LOVED our Italy luxury tour. It was our 20th anniversary and my birthday vacation. 18 days, April 29th -May16th, Venice, Chianti/Tuscany, Florence, Sorrento, Capri Amalfi coast Pompeii and Rome. Thanks to Valerie and Gennaro our initial contacts at Italy Luxury Tours for an incredible job helping organize and guide us to the perfect itinerary personalized to our wishes. Then Mina took over for organizing the 18 days, she is the best ever, texting us every day to make sure we were having a great time and letting us know who our guide and driver were the next day. She got us some great guides, restaurants, hotels, beautiful things/places to see and we didn't have to do anything just meet our private driver/guide after breakfast at our hotel and the rest was all taken care of. Thank you, Mina, for an incredible trip of a lifetime. Thank you, Valerie, and Gennaro as well for all you did to make this trip truly memorable You should give Mina a raise she is really a great asset to your company. We are hoping to return to Italy next year? perhaps Southern Italy and Sicily and will of course use Italy Luxury Tours again and ask for Mina to be our organizer. I could write a lot more but bottom line this tour was worth every penny, and we had the best time. We hope maybe in the future they have other European Luxury tours and would be the first ones to sign up for Spain, Portugal, Greece and more. Grazie mille Valerie, Gennaro and Mina for a truly luxurious stress-free vacation

Trip of a Lifetime

My husband and I just returned from our 1st ever trip to Italy. We had the best time we have ever had in our life thanks to Gennaro! Our itinerary was well planned and executed down to the last detail. His selection of cities, hotels, tours, excursions and lunches were spot on! Daily activity was not too much, not too little, every day was a perfect day plus the weather was beautiful. Our destinations included Rome, Florence, Pisa, Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast. We were entertained by our guides; we were excited to learn the history of each landmark; the food was delicious; and the scenery was exhilarating! I could go on and on! Gennaro even made sure to have an appointed Ambassador for us at the airport to help us navigate our way around. That was truly a blessing. My husband and are both seniors and Gennaro took excellent care of us through our whole journey. As a matter of fact we are wanting to go back again October of next year!

We had the most perfect and memorable…

We had the most perfect and memorable trip to Italy thanks to Italy Luxury Tours. Their expertise in travel was evident, as we felt like we spent just the right amount of time in each part of Italy during our rich journey. Our itinerary was seamless, and each planned tour was just outstanding. In addition, the tour guides were extremely knowledgeable, and professional, they did a wonderful job of balancing what they could offer with our needs (given that we have 2 teenagers.) The scheduled lunches were amazing, and we appreciated how thoughtfully each was tied to the region we were visiting. We actually went to Pepo twice because it was a family favorite! The hotel accommodations were great, especially the beautiful Le Minerva! How can we not mention the private yacht trip to Amalfi! Spectacular! We absolutely loved Italy-the people, the food, the history...everything, and we can't wait to visit again. We have already shared how happy we were using your tour company with friends and family, and look forward to reaching out for our next trip. Thank you again, Gennaro, for the perfect trip to such a beautiful country!

A Fantastic Italian Experience

My wife and I just returned from Italy where we spent 3+ weeks. The first and third weeks were already planned, but we had nothing planned for the second week. We contacted Italy Luxury Tours (ILT) and worked with Gennaro. We had no previous experience with them, so we were a little hesitant. But, we gained confidence through our telephone conversations with Gennaro. So, we worked with him on setting an agenda, starting with picking us up in Bolzano and ending with delivering us in Arezzo. He and his team set up an agenda for us for the entire week. Towns and sites included Sirmione, Bardolino, Bologna, Verona, San Gimignano, Siena, and Florence. One of the many highlights was a private boat tour of Lake Garda and some of its surrounding communities. We would not have been able to pull off this itinerary without ILT. We are so grateful to have engaged them. We’ll certainly do it again if the opportunity arises.

VIP Tour of Italy....Gennaro exceeded our expectations

I have to say this trip was over the top exceptional. My expectations were high and Gennaro exceeded them at every turn. We hit multiple cities without a single delay or issue. In fact, everything was FIRST CLASS...the transfers, the guides, the drivers, the hotels, etc. There were so many things that could have gone wrong with as much as we were trying to do but it was PERFECT. We will never travel without Gennaro and his experience and contacts and advise again. A special shout out to Sara, the guide in Venice and the guide in Rome. Everybody was exceptional but these were A++. Thank you to all for providing our family a trip we will remember for the rest of our lives.

Excellent service

Well planned and executed. Guides were knowledgeable and personable. Drivers were prompt, courteous and helpful. Hotels were superb. Everything worked to perfection. Highly recommend.

A fantastic vacation

We visited the Lakes in North Italy and Milan. ILT selected the hotels, routes, tour guides, transportation etc. Everything was first class.

Absolutely worth every penny.

The agent in Italy went out of her way to provide excellent service. She even assisted with matters after our tour ended. I highly recommend this tour company.

Fantastic private tour of North Italy

ASSISTANCE AT THE AIRPORT, TRANSFERS and TRANSPORTATION DURING THE TOURS: Were excellent, the staff was always on-time, very polite and friendly. Vehicles were Mercedes Benz vans or cars, which we did not have to share with other passengers, always clean, with good air conditioning. HOTELS: All of the hotels were excellent, except the one in Milan (Sina de la Ville) which was quite old, however, its location close to the Duomo, la Scala, etc., was excellent. BEST BUFFET BREAKFAST: Hotel Imperiale, Lake Como BEST ACCOMODATIONS: Hotel La Palma, Lake Maggiore. LUNCHES PROVIDED: Excellent. The restaurants chosen, the view from the restaurants and the food and drink were, again, excellent. TOUR GUIDES: Excellent, very knowledgeable, friendly, good English. TOURS: We think we saw all the main attractions, without missing anything important, at a speed appropriate to our capabilities. When tickets were needed to see an attraction, such tickets had been obtained earlier, thus avoiding long lines. The tours of Lake Orta and Lake Maggiore could have been done two different days rather than both the same day. Lake Orta could have been done during the afternoon of our first day in Lake Maggiore, and the later the following day. IN SUMMARY: We are extremely happy with this tour, which we wouldn't have been able to undertake without this company's help. They knew which Hotels to use, which Tour Guides to use, the main attractions at each location, which taxi boats to use, etc. This knowledge and the ability to set these services up and have them performed like clockwork was invaluable.

The bar has been set very high.

From the initial contact with Gennaro all the way to boarding the flight home our experience was above and beyond our expectations. Clearly ILT strives to be excellent and pay attention to every detail. Throughout our 2 weeks we were amazed how smoothly everything ran and how well we were taken care of. We started in Venice and then traveled to Florence, Sorrento/Amalfi Coast and ended in Rome. Every assistant, driver and tour guide was professional, polite and spoke English extremely well. In Venice we thoroughly enjoyed a day with Francesco. His knowledge and passion for the city were very evident. When our gondola ride had to be canceled due to rain he immediately called and rescheduled it for the following day. In Florence we had 2 full days with our guide Luca. What insight and knowledge! And he definitely went above and beyond when my husband's cell phone was stolen, even accompanying us to the Carabinieri to assist in filing a report. The driver Andrea was also extremely professional and friendly. Then in Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast we had 2 wonderful guides, Patti for our day on Capri and Max on our trip around the Amalfi Coast. Both were a lot of fun to be with and made the beautiful surroundings even more fantastic. We really enjoyed our interaction with Marco the driver as well and appreciated his skilled, cautious driving! The hotels definitely lived up to their 5 star ratings, especially The Bellevue Syrene in Sorrento. What a place, what great staff! As part of the planned itinerary we had a fabulous lunch in Venice, Florence, Capri and Amalfi, each superb and unique. We were treated to great food, wine and service. A highlight in our time in Tuscany was a delightful multi-course lunch and wine tasting at Tenuta Casanova. We were treated to a personalized tour and overview of the family owned organic farm/vineyard by Ricardo, as his shared his passion for winemaking and Tuscany. But without a doubt the most excellent and praiseworthy person was Mina, our point of contact throughout the 2 weeks. We can't applaud her enough for her professionalism, care and attention to detail. She communicated each day to inform us of timing, drivers, guides, etc. so we were never left wondering what was going to happen. The most impressive example of her personalized care was the day we arrived in Sorrento. Relatively quickly we knew that we'd like to extend our visit there and shorten the time scheduled in Rome. When we contacted Mina and inquired if that was possible she immediately made all the necessary changes. Within a very short amount of time we had exactly what we had requested! She also helped us plan an excursion for 1 of the extra days. She consistently provided excellent and personal service, even to the point of coming to meet us at the hotel in Sorrento. What a pleasure! The only downside to this fabulous and memorable Italian vacation is that the bar has been set very high now! How can you improve upon perfection! Thank you Gennaro and Mina!

Phone Call Gone South

This year I'm planning a trip for my parents to go to Italy. Recently I got off the phone with Italy Luxury Tours and had a downright awful experience. To start, I worked with the CEO to come up with an itinerary for my parents. According to his website, the estimated cost for the trip should have fit well within their budget... in fact my their original budget exceeded his estimated cost by >$8000. ***This is important for later*** To the CEO's credit, he did mention the trip would be higher than his typical fee given some odd destinations. When I got the quote back, it was ~$9000 over the amount his website suggested. Later in the week, I asked if we could switch one of the hotels to a more affordable area to fit it in the budget- he mentioned in our initial phone call that it would be significantly cheaper to stay in Lake Maggiore than Lake Como so I thought it would be an easy fix. Instead he pushed to change two of the days to "at leisure" days rather than changing the hotel. I did some quick math and couldn't figure out how two leisure days could possibly knock off only $1000 on their trip... so I decided to give him a call to chat about different options to get the trip within their budget. Here's where things went south quickly. It immediately became clear that the CEO would not be willing to work with me to get the trip under the budget. At one point he exclaimed, "you can't have champagne taste and a beer budget." ***Remember- my parents' budget was $8,000 over the website's recommendation*** I questioned him on this statement to which he responded by insulting my family. At this point I said, "Thank you, but I'm going to hang up now." After which he responded by calling me a "f****** a******" several times. If it weren't for that last statement, I wouldn't be leaving a cautionary review. In the future, it would be more appropriate if the CEO said something to the effect of "It appears that your needs aren't a good fit for our company. Perhaps you should look elsewhere."

Fifteen glorious nights in Italy!

Our family of five just returned from 15 glorious nights in Italy thanks to Italy Luxury Tours, Gennaro and his team. We have been planning our trip with Gennaro for almost two years and it finally arrived. The Itinerary was carefully selected, hotels and experiences selected and masterfully arranged by Gennaro. From the moment we arrived to the time we boarded our plane back, the experience was seamless. Our personal concierges, drivers and guides were always on time and ready to give us the best. Shout out to guides Forentina (?) in Venice, Chiara in Bologna, Andrea in Siena and Tuscany, Luca in Florence, Danilo our driver in Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast, Francesca and Angela in Capri and Amalfi, and Jade and Flavia in Rome. Each one was well informed and knowledgeable about all the sights and history and were wonderful interesting people to interact with. The hotels each had their own special charm and appeal and were in the best locations. We stayed at Locanda Vivaldi on the Grand Canal in Venice, Hotel L’Orologio in Florence, Hotel Bristol with breathtaking views in Sorrento and Palazzo Caruso with huge rooms on Piazza Barberini in Rome. The people in the hotels were welcoming, polite and extremely helpful. The provided breakfast was terrific at each property. We had a number of days of tours masterfully arranged by Gennaro. We saw all the sights of interest in each location and came back with so much knowledge and history. And the included restaurants for lunch were in some of the best restaurants in the city. Olivia Neri in Venice with homemade Lasagna, an unbelievable experience at the vineyard Tenuta Casanova in Tuscany where we were treated to a homemade meal by Silvio and his wife while enjoying the views from his courtyard while sipping his excellent wines, Elegant La Campannina in Capri, Great Napoletana Pizza at Peppo in Trastevere in Rome. Sara Depinto was our contact in Italy and she is terrific. She responds promptly, gives excellent dinner recommendations and is happy to make reservations and suggestions for things to do. A welcome unexpected surprise when we left was a personal concierge to guide us through the airport in Rome. She literally walked us from the car all the way through to the gate when we left. Thank you Gennaro and Italy Luxury Tours for an unforgettable trip for myself and my family. I highly recommend their service and will be telling everyone I can who wants to travel to Italy to use this wonderful private service.

“This was the best excursion we booked on our trip! We came in on a cruise ship and only had one day to see it all. And we did!! Our driver picked us up at our port. Took us to meet our guide. Azzurra was amazing! She was a wealth of knowledge, very engaging, and moved us along at a perfect pace. She took great pictures of our family for us. 7 reasons to take a private tour of Italy

This article may contain compensated links. See our full disclosure here

Want to see Italy on your own terms and in comfort and safety? Choose a private tour of Italy and you’ll be on the way to realizing your dreams. Private tours can be great value, particularly if you want to relax and let an expert get you around the country while you enjoy the scenery and experiences you’ve been dreaming of.

Taking a private tour by car means you can set your own pace and visit the places that you and your travel companions most want to see. There’s no waiting for group members and you can take full advantage of local knowledge to ensure the trip you are dreaming of is realized.

Looking for inspiration? Joe Banana Limos offer pre-designed or customized itineraries and private tours of Italy with availability in 2023 and beyond – more details

Why you should choose a private Italy tour

1 – choose your own adventure.

There is no “one size fits all” for tours of Italy despite what you may have heard. Yes, many people choose to follow the well worn path from Rome to Florence and Venice but that doesn’t mean that you have to. You may want to visit those cities and explore your own interests (and we strongly suggest that you do!). Or you might want to explore some of Italy’s hidden gems .

When you join an organized group tour, no matter how small, you’ll be making some compromises in terms of itinerary and activities. With a private tour, you can decide on the details yourself and let your driver or guide handle the logistics. Your tour is completely customized just for you and your travel companions.

2 – Set your own pace

Some people want to visit Italy to “see it all”. They love to set a brisk pace and fit in as much as possible into their days. Others prefer a slow meander around small villages stopping for lunch and a quiet stroll through the countryside.

Needless to say, group tours may not set the pace you are looking for while a private tour can accommodate your every whim. Want to stop in Tuscany’s Val D’Orcia for Brunello wine and pecorino cheese followed by gelato in San Gimignano? No problem when you’re on a private tour.

3 – Access local experts (dedicated to you!)

One of the best things about a private custom tour of Italy is that during your planning and from the moment you land you’ll have local experts dedicated to you, your travel companions and your needs. There’s no need to worry about getting from the airport and booking separate transfers. Your driver can pick you up after your long flight and transfer you in comfort to your next destination while you sit back and relax.

They are also there to help you find banks, pharmacies, the best restaurants or beach clubs – whatever you need! Of course they can also recommend the most charming hotels to suit your trip expectations and take those all important photos so you can relive your memories later.

4 – Move around with speed and ease

If you’re short on time or have issues with mobility, a private driving tour has an added advantage. Your driver is there to help you throughout the day – not just getting from town to town but within the cities you visit. They can drive you straight to the Vatican Museums where you’ll join your tour of the celebrated treasures and be waiting to take you to lunch when you’re finished. No searching for taxis or trying to figure out public transportation.

Want to know more about what’s possible with a private tour? Joe Banana Limos offer pre-designed or customized itineraries and private tours of Italy with availability in 2023 and beyond – more details

5 – Handpicked local guides in each destination

If you choose a reputable private company you can also access their network of local guides, specific to the areas of Italy you wish to visit. Did you know that to be an official guide for the major tourist destinations in Italy you need to sit an exam for each city or region? This is challenging even for one city so most choose to focus on only one. An excellent guide in Rome will likely not have expertise in Venice or Florence so it’s important that you can access the right local knowledge.

6 – Activities tailored to your budget

Private Italy tours need not be extravagant, although of course, we all love a little luxury. Whether you’re looking for premium experiences like driving a Lamborghini through the streets of Modena or you prefer a rustic beach lunch and the simple pleasure of a dip in the sea, find a company that can customize your tour with consideration to your budget. Costs are driven by class of hotel and distanced traveled so if you need to work to a set budget you can make amendments as necessary.

7 – 100% commitment to your health and safety

As the world and Italy emerge from a difficult year, it is fair to say we are all more concerned about our health and safety, particularly when traveling abroad. A private tour offers you the safest way to travel around Italy with a driver who has your well being as their top priority. There is no need to join huge lines for taxis or travel on public transportation with crowds. You can keep your distance easily with private transportation.

Private tours in Italy FAQ

Are private tours within my budget?

Private driving tours can be scaled to your needs. If you want the ultimate luxury, of course, that can be arranged. But you might be surprised to learn that private tours can be a cost effective way to travel – especially if you are in a large family group. Take advantage of the van sized transport and you will come out even or save money on ground transportation costs.

How can we choose a suitable provider?

We believe that local companies offer the best experiences due to their on the ground knowledge of local conditions and ability to communicate effective. Look for a family run business, registered with the appropriate authorities and who are fully insured to cover any mishaps. If you don’t speak fluent Italian, an English-speaking driver and/or guide is also a good idea.

We recommend Joe Banana Limos private tours because they meet all these criteria and offer a highly personalized service where your comfort and safety is their utmost priority. Pierpaulo from the company is a regular guest on our Untold Italy podcast where he shares his passion for helping customers experience Italy – from the Amalfi Coast to pizza! (he is quite the expert.

How much can I expect to pay for a private Italy tour?

The key variables are your itinerary, group size and choice of accommodation.  Prices start from $US 5,000 per person for a 9 night/10 day tour staying in 4/5 star hotels – review package details .

The Venetian word “ghetto” referred to its officially-mandated Jewish enclosure, a 16th century mixture of imposed ordinances, lively everyday life, and generally tolerant cosmopolitanism. The Cannaregio area’s open air markets are where Venetians do their food shopping, and the tour will include a break with a before-meal cocktail spritz and a cicheto (Venetian hors d’oeuvres) at a popular Jewish...

Palladian style villa along the Brenta Canal in Venice, Italy

Excursion to the Town of Asolo and the Venetian Villas

Your guide will meet you at your accommodations and accompany you to meet your driver. This region was, for most of its history, an independent republic, beginning life at the close of the Roman Empire as an outpost of refugees fleeing barbarian invaders; by the early Renaissance, thanks to some strategic looting and a location at the head of the Adriatic Sea, it had become an independent "republic" and one of the richest and most powerful cities in Europe. It did not become part of Italy until the 19th century. This tour begins with the beautiful 16th to 18th century villas along the Brenta...

What Our Clients Say

The winery and food tours were unbelievable. We received special treatment at one of your recommended restaurants in Venice, Ristorante Antico Pignolo. Not only was the food great, but the hospitality was also over the top. The manager Juri took us on a tour of the restaurant and gave us his phone number and asked if we needed anything during our stay in Venice to contact him. The other shout out goes to the The Garden Restaurant in Ravello, what an amazing view for lunch and the food was tremendous. Finally, the restaurant in Siena, Casa Tua was beautiful and staff very gracious and gave us a tour of the wine cellar.

A special thanks goes out to Alberto, Angelo and Simon who we had the privilege as our personal drivers’ multiple times. Angelo took us on our day tour of the Amalfi coast, Simon drove us to a winery and San Gimignano and Alberto drove us to my wife’s mom’s hometown of San Sossio Baronia where she was able to meet several of her cousins for the very first time. They were so happy to see her. What a magical moment. Alberto was translating for us and did a wonderful job!

Again, thank you so much for everything. We already have referred several of our friends to Your Own Italy and expresses the great job you do in putting together an awesome itinerary.

We had an absolutely Fantastic trip!! From our very courteous, punctual drivers, our kind, knowledgeable, attentive tour guides, the amazingly fresh and delicious food at the pre-arranged restaurants – let’s not forget the wonderful wine! -, the beautiful, comfortable accommodations, a perfect itinerary, to the patient, responsive staff! The professionalism and willingness to accommodate our needs was outstanding! We learned SO much and were truly spoiled. We felt very safe everywhere we went, which made for relaxing excursions enabling us to soak in the beauty and focus our attention on our guide’s wealth of information. Our only slight hiccup was not realizing that there are two train stops in Rome, so we exited at the wrong stop. An unfortunate mistake, but Marco, our driver, was graciously understanding.

Please pass our sincere gratitude along to each member of your staff who assisted us on our own Italian holiday. We made wonderful memories of a once-in-a-lifetime experience and are genuinely grateful.

Firstly, the team with Your Own Italy was outstanding and did such an incredible job of managing our itinerary. They were on top of everything and we loved having them as a resource for us throughout the trip. We visited 8 cities in all!

The tour guides they provided were exceptional and so knowledgeable. The restaurant selections were excellent and activities amazingly unique providing us with memories of a life time.

We are so happy and grateful for the expert advise and carefully selected experiences. The trip exceeded our wildest expectations.

Our wish is that we have this company in every country in Europe so we can have that level of service for future trips. We plan to return to Italy again and will definitely use them again. We highly recommend them!!! Our favorite places were Sorrento, Florence, Tuscany county side and Lake Como.

October 2023

Thank you Carmen! We are definitely sad to be back in the states after an incredible few weeks in Italy! We cannot thank you and your team enough for curating an insanely memorable experience and certainly a trip of a lifetime. From start to finish our experience was seamless and nothing but enjoyable. Each and every guide and driver enhanced our experience and made this a trip we will never forget. Aside from having to cancel our boat tour of Capri due to weather, our agenda was perfect throughout. Our experience far exceeded our expectations, Thank you!

While there were plenty of highlights, I do have to mention Vittoria who was so great to work with every day. She was proactive and responsive and made our experience stress free. Beginning with our Captain in Como, Carlo and our driver down the Amalfi Coast, Alberto Cocacola:), Gabby in Capri, Stefania, Yevgen and Marco (such a cool tour) in Rome, Antonella in Venice and Mirella in Milan, the entire team provided us with a once in a lifetime experience. If there is anywhere else you would us to leave a review, please let me know as we would be more than happy to do so.

Lastly, the one portion of our trip we booked directly was a private wine experience throughout Tuscany with Tom De Vries of Sommelier’s Choice. If you are ever looking for a partner in that region or specific to vineyard tours/experiences, I would highly recommend Tom. This too was another incredible highlight as we stayed in the gorgeous town of Cortona and visited 8 vineyards over 2.5 spectacular days in Tuscany. I would be happy to connect you via email if you have an interest.

Thank you again! We will definitely be in touch when we plan our return trip to Italy

We had the dream trip of a lifetime thanks to Yourownitaly.com. Carmen planned and Melissa executed a flawless vacation for 6. We were met promptly each morning, had great specialized guides at each location (Pompeii, Mt. Etna, Capri specifically). The accommodations were perfectly located and the trip while very active was not exhausting. We loved our cooking class with Gilda. Again thanks to Carmen, Melissa and the Yourownitaly team for an unforgettable vacation!!

We had such a great and memorable experience.

All the guides were great! Friendly, knowledgeable and patient. We are so glad we decided to use your company. It was the best decision we could have made!

Having each day scheduled, with all the arrangements made, was absolutely the best way to go. All the areas we visited (Rome, Amalfi Coast & Venice) were incredible and seeing each for 3-4 days was ideal for us.

We are so pleased with our experience with Your Own Italy. A big thank you to Carmen and her team for designing a wonderful trip to Italy for us. We had the opportunity to visit Rome, Pompeii, Sorrento, Amalfi coast, Florence, Tuscany and Venice and loved every minute of it!

All of our accommodations were fantastic – rooms with views, breakfast buffet, friendly staff, quiet, convenient locations.

We’d like to thank each of our tour guides, Marco Lori, Maria Rosaria, Andrew (Pompeii), Gabby and Roberto (Capri), Amal and Lisa (Florence), Elio (Siena) and Antonella, for great experiences. Our guides were knowledgeable as well as friendly. We learned so much! We have some great photos and memories of each city we visited.

All of our drivers were prompt and professional. We’d especially like to thank our Amalfi coast driver Angelo and our Florence-to-Tuscany driver Timothi, who made sure that we enjoyed our drives with special views, stops and wonderful conversation.

All details, including restaurant reservations, were handled by Your Own Italy and everything went smoothly. Each evening Vittoria would update us with details for the following day. So nice to know she was available to help us and this made it so easy for us to relax and enjoy our day.

Some trip highlights – food & wine walking tour in Trastevere, wine tasting at Bosco de Medici Winery (the wine was great, the food was sooo good), Amalfi coast tour with lunch in Ravello, Capri boat tour (a lot of fun), food & wine at Villa Machiavelli, a stay at the beautiful agriturismo Mormoraia, gorgeous views from Siena, gondola and water taxi rides in Venice, and guided visits to Murano and Burano. And we had the most delicious food every day!

Best PRIVATE TOURS To Do in ROME in 2024 + WHY

Sean Finelli Last Updated: January 8, 2024

When you travel to a world-class destination like Rome, you’ll likely have to share the top sights with crowds of people. You’re still going to want to visit the Vatican, Colosseum, and other attractions in Rome, so how can you avoid being shoulder-to-shoulder with strangers all the time ? Beat the crowds and see more in these best private tours in Rome.

Pro Tip:  Planning what to do on your trip to Rome? Bookmark this post in your browser so you can easily find it when you need it. See our guide to Rome  for more planning resources, our  best private Rome tours  for a memorable trip, and  how to see Rome in a day .

The Absolute BEST Private Tours To Take in Rome

Looking for a more intimate and, quite frankly, better experience of Rome? Try taking private tours in Rome . They offer a lot of benefits! You’ll often get exclusive access, personal attention, and custom options, so you can see what you want with who you want.

Your guide will give you a more personal experience and you’ll get to have more input in the narrative. Want to interrupt and ask a question? Go ahead, it’s your tour and you’re in control.

The obvious downside is that private tours cost more than small-group tours. With that in mind, we’ll be sure to let you know when a small-group tour might be a good alternative to save money throughout this article. Here are the best private tours in Rome.

Not ready to book a tour? Find out if Rome tours are worth it .

1. Private Vatican Tours

private tours italy reviews

The Vatican is a great place to take a private tour because it’s almost always crowded. Beyond that, it’s a massive complex with a high concentration of high-art Renaissance works, which makes it a really interesting discussion with the right guide. We have a great list of private Vatican tours that will appeal to every traveler.

Vatican Uncovered: A Private, Detailed Tour

For anyone wanting to deep-dive into art and history, go on an immersive journey in our private full-day tour with visits to the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica. This 5-hour tour takes you through the best and off-the-beaten-path Vatican galleries, giving you a detailed look into the museum’s immense collection. You’ll see more than most who visit the Vatican!

The Quickest Early Access Private Vatican Tour

For a group wanting to see the highlights of the museum with some light commentary, this private tour with visits to the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica. This 2.5-hour tour gets you into the Vatican Museums before the general public, so you can enjoy the best of the Vatican with fewer crowds.

Private After Hours Vatican Tour

For the most exclusive experience of the Vatican possible, our after-hours private tour gets you into the museum without any other visitors. You’ve probably heard about how crowded the Sistine Chapel gets. In this private tour, you’ll have the rare experience of seeing the Sistine Chapel exclusively with your group. If you are interested, we recommend contacting us 6 months in advance minimum.

Small Group Vatican Tours

If you have a lower budget but still want to be spared the majority of the crowds, we also have some small-group Vatican tours that offer access before and after opening hours. These Vatican tours generally have the best access at the lowest cost:

  • Privileged Entrance Vatican Tour with Sistine Chapel (earliest entrance)
  • Skip the Line Vatican Tour with Sistine Chapel (start times all day)
  • Vatican Night Tour with Sistine Chapel

Not ready to book a tour? Find out if a Vatican tour is worth it .

2. Private Colosseum Tours

private tours italy reviews

Admittedly, we only have one private Colosseum tour and that’s because our small-group tours are so great. Most of our small-group tours visit restricted areas of the Colosseum, which means you’ll see more of this iconic monument and enjoy less-crowded areas.

Private Colosseum Tour with Arena Floor, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill

Our private Colosseum tour gets you access to the Arena Floor—a restricted area and one of my personal favorite parts of visiting the Colosseum in Rome. In this 3-hour tour, you’ll walk through the infamous Gladiator’s Gate out onto the Arena Floor where many gladiators battled it out in ancient Rome. After seeing the Colosseum, you’ll also go on a guided exploration of the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill

Private Rome in a Day Tour with Colosseum and Vatican Museums

We also run a great private tour that combines the Colosseum, the Vatican, and other parts of the city center. Our private Rome in a Day tour is a great option for anyone happy to spend a whole day sightseeing with a dedicated expert guide.

Colosseum Underground Tour with Roman Forum and Palatine Hill

For a truly exclusive experience of the Colosseum, consider our Colosseum Underground tour . It gets you Arena Floor access and visits to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. What makes this 3.5-hour tour our most exclusive Colosseum tour is its access to the Hypogeum or underground tunnels. This is where gladiators, wild animals, and the condemned awaited their fate.

The area is an active archaeological site with extremely limited access, so it’s best to book this tour well in advance. The group size is a little larger. However, due to the exclusivity of this product, we get 99% positive feedback—which is the best you can get in this day and age! I also really like our Special Access Colosseum Arena Floor tour for its access to some restricted areas and low cost.

Not ready to book a tour? Find out why a Colosseum tour is worth it .

3. Private Borghese Gallery Tours

private tours italy reviews

The Borghese Gallery is a truly one-of-a-kind museum that should be high up on anyone’s list. It’s a must-see for art lovers, and even if you’re not an art aficionado, this gallery will rope you into our circle.

It’s one of the greatest baroque galleries on Earth headlined by Gian Lorenzo Bernini (sculptor) and Caravaggio (painter). Baroque, if you’re unfamiliar, is a style of art that is guided by passion, strong movement, and heavy narrative, making it easy to love.

In our private Borghese Gallery tour , you’ll see the top works of art in the gallery with a passionate guide. The tour lasts 2 hours as the museum only allows people to enter for 2 hours at a time. Not only is a private tour of the Borghese Gallery a must but it’s also reasonably priced for what you get—the tour has amazing reviews!

Not ready to book a tour? Check out our  Borghese Gallery Guide for more info.

4. Private Rome To Pompeii Tours

Pompeii Day Trip from Rome

Despite the 2.5-hour drive from Rome, Pompeii is quite often at the top of most travelers’ lists when visiting the Eternal City. This is because Pompeii is without question the best-preserved archeological site on our planet. The way it was “flash frozen” by volcanic ash has given us tremendous insight into Roman civilization, making it a big bucket-list item.

That said, is it worth taking a private tour to Pompeii? We run both private-tour options that allow you to be in your own vehicle and small-group tour options that travel to Pompeii in a smaller bus. If money is no issue to you, then a private tour is likely the best way to go.

However, our small group tours offer tremendous value and it might be worth having the company of other travelers on your way down to Pompeii. The prices are vastly different. Check out all our Pompeii tour options from Rome to see for yourself.

Private Rome to Pompeii Day Trip Options

If you want to go the private tour route, consider our private Rome to Pompeii day trip with Mt. Vesuvius . Is there a better way to cap off your tour of the incredible Pompeii than a hike up the volcano responsible for the ruins we explore today?

Fancy the idea of ending your Pompeii private tour in a lovely coastal town with Amalfi-Coast vibes? Consider our private Rome to Pompeii day trip with Sorrento .

For the small-group tour option, you could take a Rome to Pompeii day trip with Sorrento . This is a more budget-friendly way to see Pompeii and get an afternoon free to spend in Sorrento.

Definitely consider doing our Rome to Pompeii day trip with Mt Vesuvius—it’s quite the experience. You literally climb up Mt. Vesuvius to look into the crater of the mountain with a volcanologist!

Not ready to book a tour? Find out if a Pompeii day trip from Rome is worth it .

5. Private Rome Catacombs Tours

private tours italy reviews

During the Roman Empire, there was a very important rule. You could not leave dead bodies within the city limits for any extended period of time. This made a lot of sense since the plague caused a great deal of death and dead bodies spread all types of diseases and bacteria.

For this reason, Christians started underground burial sites outside the Roman walls, which today we refer to as the catacombs. The Rome Catacombs could have been the final burial place for hundreds of thousands of bodies. They are extremely interesting to visit!

We run private Catacombs tours and small group tours, both of which visit the Catacomb of Domitilla, the Appian Way, and the Bone Crypt of the Capuchin Monks. It may seem dark at first, but there’s an unexpected beauty to the crypts and the artful arrangement of hundreds of skeletons.

Both are great options. The Catacombs Private Tour in Rome obviously offers a lot of customization and privacy as always with a higher price. The great part about the small group Rome Catacombs tour is the low price and small group size relative to other tours.

Not ready to book a tour? Find out if a Rome Catacombs tour is worth it .

Where To Stay in Rome
