Spread across an area of 46. 5 acres this is one of the most popular tourist spots in Kolkata. Alipore Zoo in Kolkata is a home for many mammals, reptiles and birds. One of the most special attractions here was the giant Tortoise here named Adwaita who was alive for more than 250 years till 2006. In 2006 the tortoise died. With a rich history of 140 years this is one of the richest Zoological gardens. One of the recent additions here is the glass wall enclosure for tigers which is like a first time thing in India.
Alipore Zoo History
At first the Alipore Zoo was started privately by the then Governor General in India, Richard Wellesley. Around the year 1800, this initiative was taken as a part of the Indian Natural History Project. Furthermore, the first initiative was taken by the curator of Bengal Asiatic Society Museum, Dr. John McCleland in 1842. However it was a failed attempt to establish a proper Zoological Garden. Later around 1867, the then president of the Asiatic Society of Bengal again attempted to take forward this idea.
This time the plan was successful. But the main issue at that point was a suitable piece of land for the establishment of a zoo. And therefore the plan was again scrapped. Later in 1873 the plan was again proposed by the then Postmaster of Government of India Sir Carl Louis Schwedier. But it was said that until and unless a suitable area is found the plan would be put on hold.
Finally, in 1875 the land in Alipore was allotted by the Government for the Zoological Garden. A number of donors then donated their collection of specimens including Mr. Carl Louis Schwendler. A lot of people from both British and Indian communities, including some famous ones like Raja Wadiyar IV who is the Maharaja of Mysore, Raja Suryakanta Acharya of Mymensingh donated some of their menageries.
Furthermore a managing committee was created with Sir Schwendler and Botanist George King. After a lot of discussions on things like the entry fee, timings and everything, the zoo was opened on 1 st May 1876 for the public. One of the biggest contributors for the development of the Zoo in the initial years was Rai Bahadur Ram Brahma Sanyal who was the first Superintendent of the garden. His ideas of captive breeding, taking care of the nutritional values of the species, providing medical aid, and maintaining records of behavioral patterns and other things of the animals were truly helpful in the development of this Zoological Garden.

History of Alipore Zoological Gardens
Around 1800, Richard Wellesley, the then-Governor General of India, began keeping a small collection of animals at his summer residence in Barrackpore , Kolkata. This collection eventually evolved into what is now known as the Alipore Zoological Gardens. The Indian Natural History Project included the menagerie’s establishment.
Dr. John McCleland, the curator of the Bengal Asiatic Society Museum at the time, made his first unsuccessful attempt to start a zoological park in Calcutta in 1842, but it received no attention. About 20 years later, in 1867, Dr. Joseph Bart Fayer made an attempt to propose the concept of establishing a zoological park. He was the President of the Asiatic Society of Bengal at the time. This time, the concept received a lot of good feedback from the public but was abandoned since no appropriate site was available. Carl Louis Schwendier, who was the Government of India’s postmaster at the time, created a prospective zoological park plan in 1873, but it was shelved until a suitable location was chosen.
In 1875, the Government of India finally granted the property on each side of Alipore Road, which runs from Zerrut Bridge to Belvedere, in an effort to establish a zoological garden after three previous failed efforts. On September 24, 1875, the Lt. Governor General of Bengal gave his consent. Mr. Carl Louis Schwendler gave the zoo his initial collection of specimens, and by December 1875, a number of other benefactors had contributed a sizeable sum. The donations came from both British and Indian nobles, and those on the list included Raja Suryakanta Acharya of Mymensingh and Maharaja of Mysore Krishna Raja Wadiyar IV, who gave some or all of their private zoos.
On December 9, 1875, Schwendler and renowned botanist George King formed the first management committee. The first meeting of the committee took place on December 10, 1875. The Alipore Zoological Garden was officially opened to the public on May 1st, 1876, following the completion of the necessary paperwork and entry cost negotiations.
Without mentioning Rai Bahadur Ram Brahma Sanyal, the first Superintendent of the park, who devotedly worked towards the improvement and upkeep of animals in the zoo, the mention of Alipore Zoological Park is incomplete. At a time when captive breeding programmes were relatively unknown, his contribution to the zoo’s programme became a significant success story. In the year 1892, he released a book titled “A Handbook of the Management of Wild Animals in Captivity in Lower Bengal”. When it was published, the book was the first of its sort.

Zoological Garden, Kolkata Overview
Zoological Gardens is situated at Alipore Road, the horticultural garden houses the Zoo of Calcutta, with many wild animals in natural enclosures. It also has many varieties of birds and reptiles other than the interesting flora and fauna. To the south of the Maidan, Calcutta 16-hectare zoo was opened in 1875. Some of the animals are displayed in near natural environments, others in the pitiful conditions characteristic of Third World zoos. In 1873, the then Governor Sir Richard Temple proposed the formation of a zoo in Calcutta. Sir C.L. Lendal corroborated it. Finally, the Government allotted land for this purpose responding to the joint petition of The Asiatic Society and Agri-Horticultural Society. This is the largest zoo in India. It comprises several animals, birds and even creatures of rare species. It has a large collection of birds and mammals, and an enclosure for reptiles, including a tortoise that is much older than the zoo itself. During the winter season, the migratory birds flock in the zoo for its artificial lake and vegetation. Directly across the main zoo is an aquarium, with a variety of aquatic life from around the world. The Zoological Gardens , was established as a private, voluntary society. It is famous for its tigers. Special attractions are the white tiger, the tigon (a cross between a tiger and a lion) and the litigon (a cross between a lion and a tigon). It can take hours to go through all the sections. The campus also features a children's park and a cafeteria.
