A LIV Golf, PGA Tour reunification? Pass

Tfc contributor gary van sickle is of the belief that the pga tour doesn't need liv golf and vice versa, so he suggests letting them go their own way.

The great philosophers Peaches and Herb once noted, “Reunited and it feels so good.”

Their message still resonates. In fact, reunification is professional golf’s current buzzword.

It sounds like a safe, peaceful word to solve the split between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf.

I don’t mean to be a torpedo in a room full of red roses, but I don’t care about reunification. I like the PGA Tour and I am interested in LIV, but …

Do I suddenly have a hankering for some Dustin Johnson, whose 36-hole Masters score beat only three other players? Not at all.

When Brendan Steele won in Adelaide last weekend (despite missing short putts galore), did I think, “Gee, that could’ve been a PGA Tour win”? Nope.

pga tour pass

Do I miss Phil Mickelson, whose finishes in LIV’s 54-man fields this year are 51, 30, 6, 52, 47, 43, 36? He couldn’t win on PGA Tour Champions Tour with that kind of play.

Am I in withdrawal without Jon Rahm, Cam Smith, Bryson DeChambeau, Tyrrell Hatton and Kevin Na? Nah. (Pardon that redundancy.) And if I was, hypothetically, I could tune in to the occasional LIV Golf telecast and get my fix. (The first LIV team playoff last weekend in Adelaide was pretty good, in fact, because the enthusiasm of the Aussie fans made for an electric atmosphere.)

The PGA Tour would be a better place with LIV’s stars, but it doesn’t need them. And LIV Golf doesn’t need the PGA Tour. It seems to be going along just fine. The Adelaide event shows that there is great interest in LIV Golf outside the U.S. Maybe LIV ought to play four, five or eight events in Australia. That country has incredible golf fans.

Reunification is a swell talking point, but that’s all it is. Let the LIV Golf players return to the U.S.? At what cost? And it doesn’t seem as if very many of them want to return to the PGA Tour. Why would they? They are riding the greatest welfare gravy train in history. Richard Bland, Peter Uihlein, Matt Jones and others are laughing all the way to their online banking apps.

I haven’t seen any signs that commissioner Jay Monahan and the PGA Tour are interested in compromising. Ditto, Greg Norman and LIV Golf.

The one factor that could change this stalemate is the $3 billion being poured into the PGA Tour by Strategic Sports Group (SSG), an investment group that also owns the Boston Red Sox, among other things. One former major champion who has no love for LIV told me that yeah, the Saudi’s are scary fellows, as Mickelson famously said. “You know who’s just as scary?” the champ added. “Investment bankers. They want a return on their money.”

The new money, which already paid off Player Equity Program payments that included $100 million to Tiger Woods and $50 million to Rory McIlroy, was just a buy-in. Now that SSG has a stake in the PGA Tour, it is going to have a voice in the tour’s direction going forward.

How do you monetize a niche sport like golf enough to make up $3 billion? I don’t see it happening in golf’s current landscape. Maybe the PGA Tour’s long-running model would have to be blown up to make that kind of money. McIlroy already suggested smaller fields and bigger purses, a suggestion not at all self-serving. Funny, that notion sounds exactly like the World Tour proposed by Norman in the 1990s that the PGA Tour shot down.

Even a new version of that old idea doesn’t sound like a $3 billion idea, either. But SSG knows more about making money than any former ink-stained wretch writer.

We’re forgetting a key point in this whole controversial affair. Thanks to LIV Golf, viewers now have more golf to watch. That’s a win for us.

Getting golf reunited might reduce our viewing options which, Peaches and Herb would agree, wouldn’t feel so good.

IT TAKES TWO

Even though the Zurich Classic was a team event, the victory by Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry counts on McIlroy’s official PGA Tour victory list. That gives him 25, the same number as Johnny Miller, Tommy Armour and Macdonald Smith, and they’re tied for 23rd on the list. That’s pretty elite company. McIlroy is 57 behind the record shared by Sam Snead and Tiger Woods.

THE RANK AND FILE

Jon Rahm is back on top in the updated Vans Ultimate LIV Golf Rankings (or VULGR as insiders call them).

Tyrrell Hatton briefly claimed the No. 1 ranking after the Masters, but Rahm piled on another third-place finish last weekend in Adelaide. In six events, Rahm has finished somewhere between third and eighth. He is Mr. Consistent. And also, surprisingly, Mr. No Wins Yet.

The VULGR rankings are based on how many opponents a player beat and how many he lost to. Adelaide winner Brendan Steele , for instance, compiled a 53-0-0 mark in his victory. Rahm, in a five-way tie for third, went 47-2-4. The rankings include the last 12 LIV events plus the Masters. Each players’ won-loss record is converted into a winning percentage.

Notable changes: Steele moved up from 34th to 17th with the Adelaide win and got his winning percentage over the .500 mark to .572. … Louis Oosthuizen is quietly enjoying a revival of his game. In his last six LIV events, he has a pair of runner-up finishes, a sixth and a seventh, and has sneaked up to No. 5 at .682. … Dustin Johnson has fallen out of the top 20. He’s currently No. 21. … Big names who have been disappointing include Phil Mickelson and Lee Westwood . Mickelson, ranked 50th, is 33-176-3 in his last four tournaments. Westwood, No. 51, has cracked the top 30 only once in his last eight appearances and is 35-171-6 in the last four events. … Hudson Swafford , returning from hip surgery last year, continues to struggle. His 52nd-place finish in Adelaide was his fourth finish of 50 or worse in six events so far, leading to his .128 mark. The buzz is fading from Anthony Kim . He came in last in Adelaide. His four finishes have been 53, 53, 50, 54, for a 6-206-0 mark and a dismal .028 percentage.

VULGR (thru LIV Golf Adelaide) 1. Jon Rahm, .808 2. Tyrrell Hatton, .782 3. Bryson DeChambeau, .768 4. Talor Gooch, .685 5. Louis Oosthuizen, .681 6. Dean Burmeister, .678 7. Richard Bland, .677 8. HILTON HEAD ISLAND, South Carolina — An imaginary phone conversation in the wake of the Masters Tournament:

“Good afternoon. Thank you for calling American Needle Movers. How may we help you today?

Golf: “We’ve got an opening we haven’t been able to fill. We need a superstar pro golfer the public will find compelling. Our tournaments have been viewed as flat for the last year or so. Geez, the Masters TV ratings were down 20 percent from last year. We need inflation on those numbers, not deflation. Have you got something to pump us up?”

ANM: “May I present the hottest player in golf and your new Masters champion, Scottie Scheffler?”

Golf: “Yeah. No. You’re close. Everybody loves Scottie, he’s a nice guy. He’s winning again and we can’t take our eyes off his happy feet golf swing. But nobody is rushing out to buy RBC Heritage tickets in Hilton Head to watch Scottie. He’s too normal, too down-to-earth. He’s gonna have to run the table to move our needle. He needs to ripen. Who else do you have?”

ANM: “Oh. Well. You have high standards. How about the founder of the original TigerMania, Tiger Woods? He broke the record for most consecutive cuts made at the Masters. And we all know he isn’t a needle mover, he is the needle.”

pga tour pass

Golf: “Obviously. But you saw him on the weekend in Augusta. He’s damaged goods. He only plans to play the four majors this year and he has to prove he can even do that. His body clearly stopped cooperating after the taxing first 36 holes. He might contend again if he rides in a cart but that’s not happening. We would die for another wave of TigerMania, but there’s a better chance of the Chicago Bears raising the Titanic than of Tiger winning a sixth Masters, sorry to say.”

ANM: “You’re quite a discerning shopper. Look, we can give you deal on Jon Rahm. He’s won a Masters and a U.S. Open.”

Golf: “No thanks. He fell into that black hole known as LIV Golf. He hasn’t even won one of those 54-man outings yet. He may as well be playing behind the Iron Curtain for all the pub he gets.”

ANM: “Brooks Koepka has five major titles and he’s the current PGA Championship titleholder.”

Golf: “He stunk up the joint at the Masters. Plus, people think he’s a condescending jerk.”

ANM: “I think you’re confusing him with Zach Johnson. But he’s got a good nickname, ‘Major Brooks.’ You can work with that.”

Golf: “No, he’s hiding out in LIV. We’ve had a Brooks Blackout since Oak Hill last year. He’d have to win the next two majors, at least.”

ANM: “Are you seriously looking for a needle mover or just browsing? Sheesh. Hey, we’ve got Max Homa and his amusing tweets.”

Golf: “Wake me up when September ends and his name is on three or four trophies.”

ANM: “We’ve got Ludvig Aberg, the future of golf. There’s Collin Morikawa, who has already won two majors. We’ve got Open champ Brian Harman. He likes to hunt animals.”

Golf: “Please, serious attempts only.”

ANM: “All right. You drive a hard bargain. I can let you have Bryson DeChambeau at a good price.”

Golf: “When did you get into the recycling business? Look, Bryson was the game’s needle-mover three years ago when he bulked up, pounded 380-yard drives and tried driving the green at that par-5 around the lake at Bay Hill. Fans dug his long ball, all right. He was selling tickets like Taylor Swift sells heartbreak. He was hot stuff.”

ANM: “Don’t forget, he shot 58 on the LIV circuit last year at the Greenbrier and won. He’s got the crazy irons that are all the same length. He’s the Mad Scientist. He opened the Masters with a 65 using irons with curved faces that he helped design and got approved by the USGA only two days earlier.”

Golf: “Not bad. We might be able to make a deal if you can get him off LIV and back into broad daylight where he can be seen — like the PGA Tour. But if a needle moves in the forest and no one is there to see it, did it really move? The LIV connection is a stopper, though. I’m sorry, if that’s all you’ve got, I don’t think you can help us with our needle issue.”

ANM: “Wait! Does Taylor Swift play golf?”

Golf: “No.”

ANM: “Darn. Well, thanks for calling ANM.”

MASTERS LEFTOVERS

A roar had just gone up from the 10th green Sunday afternoon at the Masters. I was standing back near the 10th tee in the shade of the big scoreboard that faces Augusta National’s 18th green. A young-ish guy in sunglasses walked up and waited for the scoreboard workers to update the numbers. “I hope that was Homa making a birdie,” he said.

No, I’m pretty sure it was Scottie Scheffler, I told him, because the gallery cheered pretty loudly after his approach shot there. I didn’t mention that Scheffler was playing with Collin Morikawa, not Homa.

“Well, me and my buddy have Homa in a Calcutta back home. I really need Homa to make a couple of birdies,” he said.

Good luck, I told him, but I’m sure that’s a Scheffler birdie. “Well, I’m wishing that girl has that baby so hard right now,” he said. (Scheffler’s wife, Meredith, was expecting to give birth soon and Scheffler said he’d pull out of the tournament if she went into labor.) The new numbers went up. Scheffler added a birdie and widened his lead. The guy looked at his friend. “Well, second’s not bad,” he said. “If we just finish fifth we get our money back.”

Then they headed down the hill toward the 10 th green.

This has been Great Moments in Masters History …

THINKING INSIDE THE BUN

Former U.S. Open champ Matt Fitzgerald was delivered a surprise when he finished a media conference Tuesday afternoon before the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town. Two chefs from Fraser’s Tavern, a dining hotspot at the host Sea Pines Resort, continued a tradition by bringing him the new menu item, The Defending Champion Burger. (Which no doubt will be known as The FitzBurger.)

Fitzpatrick had given the chefs input about his favorite burger additions. The FitzBurger featured a patty made from a blend of short rib, brisket and chuck; a sesame-seed bun; applewood smoked bacon; Swiss cheese; and garlic herb aioli. Fitzpatrick took a large bit of the burger that was presented to him on a tray under glass, devoured it and nodded his head. “It’s quite good,” he said.

And the FitzBurger sounds better than some past winner’s versions would’ve sounded such as CinkBurger, PanBurger, KoooochBurger and the BooBurger. (Stewart Cink, C.T. Pan, Matt Kuchar and Boo Weekley in case you were wondering.)

POTPOURRI FOR $20, ALEX

British Open winner Brian Harman , a native of nearby Savannah, Georgia, was reminded in the media room Tuesday that he posted a 47 on Augusta National’s back nine last week. “The conditions just got the better of me,” Harman said, chuckling. “I hit a wedge shot into the water on 13, which is the hole I restarted on, and I just lost my patience. Then I hit it in the water on 16. Both shots I felt like I executed pretty good. If you could have let me move my ball three feet I probably would have made two birdies instead of a double and a triple. I wasted the golf tournament but I was proud of the way I hung in there Friday afternoon and shot a decent score even after I wasn't going to make the cut.” … Fitzpatrick was asked just how difficult conditions were on the weekend at Augusta National, which was baked firm and very fast. “I felt that every single shot last week, particularly with how strong the wind was, it was on a knife’s edge.” … Former Masters champ Charl Schwartzel was asked about Friday’s windy Masters conditions and if it caused him to face any impossible shots. Said Schwartzel: “I thought I had 81 impossible shots.” … You may have missed Nick Faldo on an early pre-round Golf Channel visit last week talking about playing with Tiger Woods in 1997 during the first two rounds, including Woods’ opening 70 that featured a first-nine 40. “I didn’t see him, I was in the bloody trees,” Faldo said. “We didn’t say a word until we got to the fifth green. Those were the early days of Sub-Air [mechanized in-ground drains]. The fifth green was biscuit brown. All he said was, ‘That’s different, isn’t it.’ How can he shoot 40 on the first nine and win by 12. That was stellar Tiger.” … Most ridiculous forward-looking stat: The soonest any player (other than Woods or Phil Mickelson ) could match Jack Nicklaus’ record of 18 major championships is the 2027 PGA Championship. And that’s only if Brooks Koepka wins the next 13 majors in a row.

Jack nicklaus remembers the exact moment he knew it was time to pass the baton (and it included tiger woods), share this article.

For Jack Nicklaus, the moment came in 2000 at Valhalla, the site of next week’s PGA Championship.

Nicklaus, then 60, was playing in what would be his final PGA Championship. He missed the cut at 4 over, not able to recover from an opening-round 77. And when he walked off the course it hit him.

“Man, you need to pass the baton,” Nicklaus said he was thinking. “You can’t compete in this anymore.”

And it was the man who he had just competed against who made Jack realize it was time to move on from competitive golf.

Nicklaus, who lives in North Palm Beach, played those two rounds with Tiger Woods, who now lives on Jupiter Island. Tiger opened with a 66-67 on the way to an 18-under 270 and his third consecutive major championship of the season.

Nicklaus, 84, spoke of that moment last week at the Legends Luncheon in Columbus, Ohio, hosted by the Memorial Tournament, which is scheduled for June 6-9 at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio. Nicklaus is the founder and host of the Memorial.

“I knew that I was getting to where I couldn’t compete (and) it was brought to me very abruptly, in 2000 at Valhalla when I played with Tiger,” he said.

“I had realized that before, but that was … boom! Right in the face. Thirty-six holes of playing with him and seeing how well he played, how he just dominated what was going on, I did that earlier. But I don’t do it now.”

Jack knew who would be carrying that “baton,” as it turned out, for about the next quarter century, which is why that metaphorical handoff was to Tiger. That 2000 PGA Championship was Tiger’s fifth major. He would add 10 more, pulling him to within three of Nicklaus’ record.

And although Tiger, 48, isn’t through chasing majors – he will return to the site of that 2000 PGA Championship next week – it will be an international story even if he just contends in a major going forward.

Nicklaus never has denied Tiger’s extraordinary skill, several times saying his record of 18 majors would have fallen if injuries had not impacted Tiger’s career. He once again praised Tiger’s game, his swing and ability to hit shots that still very few human beings can replicate.

Tiger Woods-DUI-Jack Nicklaus

Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus. (Golfweek File Photo)

But it’s the physical toll of multiple injuries, surgeries, and the 2021 car crash outside of Los Angeles in which Tiger nearly lost his right leg that Jack cites as the reason it would be very difficult for Tiger now to compete consistently on the biggest stage.

Something Tiger has been saying for the last two years.

“Tiger has the ability to still play, but obviously doesn’t play as well as he did, and I think a lot of his is physical ailments,” Nicklaus said. “But I watched him hit balls, and he hits the ball pretty well. It’s just trying to keep his body together.

“I don’t know if he can walk 72 holes. He can be competitive for at least two rounds, because that’s what he did at Augusta. … If he can be competitive in the third, then certainly he can be competitive in the fourth.”

Masters 2024 microcosm of Tiger’s post-accident career

This year’s Masters was a microcosm of Tiger’s post-accident career. He set the tournament record with his 24th consecutive cut with a two-day score of 145, 1-over par. But by the weekend his body started breaking down. Woods posted his worst score ever at Augusta in the third round, 10-over 82.

In five majors since the accident, which resulted in his leg being held together by plates, rods and screws, Tiger has been forced to withdraw after the second or third round twice, and missed the cut once.

Tiger’s stunning victory in the 2019 Masters is his lone major championship in the last 16 years. During that span, he has missed 23 of 67 majors.

The 1986 Masters was the last of Jack’s 18 major championships. He was 46. He continued to compete in all four majors for the next 11 years, a sixth-place finish in the 1990 Masters the closest he’d come to winning.

The last time Nicklaus played a round of golf where he holed out every putt was the 2005 British Open at St. Andrews. That was the last of his record 164 majors. He rarely plays, but did reveal he got in three rounds at Augusta following this year’s tournament.

“Life passes on and you get old and can’t do the things you used to do,” Nicklaus said. “I just think golf is an amazing sport, and we have the ability to play and compete as long as we do. And find lightning in a bottle occasionally, like I did in ’86.”

2024 Wells Fargo Championship

Following a less-than-stellar stretch on the schedule, the PGA Tour heads to Quail Hollow for the Wells Fargo Championship, an event that's always been one to circle on the calendar, even before earning "Signature Event" status this year.

This golf course has its haters in the golf architecture community, though some will defend Quail Hollow as a layout that at least offers the modern pros a (usually) challenging test. However, Wyndham Clark did slice the North Carolina track - and the competition - with ease last year, finishing at 19-under par for the week, four shots clear of his nearest competitor. It was a coming-out party for Clark, who went on to win the 2023 U.S. Open and has remained a force this year.

He'll look to defend his Wells Fargo crown this week against the best the PGA Tour currently has to offer with one HUGE exception, as Scottie Scheffler remains on baby watch and is the only eligible player not teeing it up this week. Every other big name will be in attendance at Quail Hollow, as we get a quasi-preview of the upcoming PGA Championship. This is a good one...let's get into it!

You can also find out who the smart money is on by checking out Spencer Aguiar's PGA DFS: Vegas Report every week. And be sure to read all of our other top-notch weekly PGA DFS articles to help you win big! This week's Horse For The Course contains excerpts from my Masters Bible, which contains outlooks for every player in this year's field. You can find it free by clicking here.

The Course: Quail Hollow Golf Club

Par 71 - 7,558 Yards, Greens: Bermuda, Designed By: George Cobb (Tom Fazio Renovations)

Originally designed by George Cobb in 1961, Quail Hollow has always presented players with the daunting closing stretch dubbed the "Green Mile", but a Tom Fazio upgrade prior to hosting the 2017 PGA Championship puts the North Carolina layout in the conversation for one of the tougher tests on the Tour schedule.

The first thing that jumps out is Quail Hollow's length. At almost 7,600 yards, a golfer's distance will play an important factor this week. Players will be using the big dog often, which makes me very interested in a player's prowess off the tee. Ball striking will be important, as it seemingly is every week. We must also consider scrambling ability and bogey avoidance on this tough layout.

Recent Wells Fargo Winners

  • 2023: Wyndham Clark (-19)
  • 2022: Max Homa (-8) *Held At TPC Potomac
  • 2021: Rory McIlroy (-10)
  • 2019: Max Homa (-15)

Rory McIlroy

Don't stop believin'. After what's been a rocky start to the year for Rory McIlroy - a stretch that's included yet another Masters disappointment and overall mediocre play on U.S. soil - the superstar might have found some positive mojo in the strangest of places by teaming with good friend Shane Lowry to win the Zurich Classic two weeks ago, a victory that resulted in some feel-good viral celebrations for Rors and Shane.

The confidence booster couldn't have come at a better time for McIlroy, as he enters a stretch of the schedule that contains two major championships and three Signature Events across the next seven weeks. We could see the good vibes continue this week at Quail Hollow, a course that's been a happy hunting ground for McIlroy throughout his career.

He picked up his first career PGA Tour victory at Quail in 2010, a win that kicked off a dominant stretch on the Carolina layout. McIlroy has all-told recorded three wins and five additional top-10 finishes across his 11 career starts at Quail Hollow. With his elite course history, positive momentum in tow from his New Orleans adventure, and Scottie Scheffler on baby watch in Texas, this week presents a real opening for Rory to get his nose in the 2024 fight as he continues to chase his elusive fifth career major championship.

Xander Schauffele

Not really sure what we can say about Xander Schauffele, as offering equal doses of effusive praise and harsh criticism seems to somehow be appropriate for the Californian, who has performed at an unquestionably elite level this year, yet has zero wins or notable achievements to show for it. That's just kinda how it goes when you back the X-Man.

He's been an absolute top-10 machine this year, racking up seven across his 10 starts in 2024. Outside of showing just a little wobble at Hilton Head - a weird course that was played in tough conditions this year - the X-Man has been near flawless in every aspect of the game. With Scheffler not in the field this week, Schauffele grades out first among these elite Wells Fargo entrants in SG: Total.

His Quail Hollow experience isn't extensive, but it is strong - especially when coupled with his 2024 form. Schauffele logged a runner-up finish to Wyndham Clark in last year's edition of the Wells Fargo and also has a T14 on his Quail CV from 2021.

Following a huge 2023 campaign, the California native was relatively quiet during the West Coast Swing portion of the schedule this year, a block on the calendar where he normally dominates. However, Homa announced his presence with authority at the Masters by playing beautifully at Augusta National. He was in serious contention throughout the week before ultimately succumbing to what felt like an inevitable Scottie Scheffler charge and settling for a share of third place.

Homa almost certainly came away from the Masters with loads of positives after securing his best-ever finish in a major. His performance at Augusta was a great reminder that Max usually brings his best on the toughest of golf courses. Among his six career PGA Tour victories he's won at Riviera, Torrey Pines, and, yes...Quail Hollow. A T8 in the Tour's return to Carolina last year demonstrates that Homa hasn't lost his touch on this beastly layout. It will be interesting to see if his Masters run kickstarts a summer run for the fan favorite. It could begin this week.

Tommy Fleetwood

First of all, let's all send some prayers/positive thoughts to Tommy's longtime friend and caddie Ian Finnis, who recently had to undergo open-heart surgery. As someone who has had some heart issues, I can tell you it's scary and no joke, so I hope the big guy gets well soon.

Augusta National legend Gray Moore was on Fleetwood's bag for a stout T3 performance at the Masters and he'll likely use TaylorMade Tour manager Adrian Rietveld this week and for the majority of Finnis' absence. No matter who is on the bag, the Englishman is already well-acquainted with this North Carolina layout, as he recorded a T5 in last year's Wells Fargo, as well as a T14 in the 2021 edition.

There was an obvious Masters hangover in his most recent outing at the RBC Heritage, though the Englishman has now put together top-10 finishes in half of his last six starts. His consistency and explosive scoring ability on difficult golf courses make him one to watch this week.

Pga tour lays out how the player equity program will work.

  • Rex Hoggard ,
  • Rex Hoggard

In February, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan introduced the rough outline of the Player Equity Program, a vesting plan for the circuit’s new for-profit arm that will carve up a hefty portion of the initial $1.5 billion investment from Strategic Sports Group. On Wednesday, players were given a more detailed version of the program, PGA Tour chief competitions officer Tyler Dennis confirmed on “Golf Central.”

The initial player equity grants will be approximately $930 million distributed to 193 players via four categories, starting with the game’s stars. Monahan informed players on Wednesday via a letter of their individual grants.

“There’s no other sports league in the world that has this significant number of their athletes as owners of their own sports organization,” Dennis said.

“We want to grow the PGA Tour in many different ways and having the alignment of players as player-owners with the organization is going to allow us to drive that quickly forward.”

The first group includes 36 players receiving $750 million in equity based on the last five years of play. “Career Points” will be awarded based on how many years a player has been a Tour member, how many times they earned a spot in the Tour Championship and how many times they have won, with extra points awarded for high-profile victories like the majors, The Players Championship and the FedExCup.

Group 2’s share of the initial equity will be much smaller ($75 million) and will be granted to 64 players. The group is considered “steady performers and up-and-comers” and will be based on FedExCup points earned over the last three years.

Equity to Group 3 will be $30 million going to 57 players based on career earnings and how many times a player finished inside the top 125 in FedExCup points.

The final group will include “past legends,” like Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson, with $75 million going to 36 players based on the “Career Points” formula. Those grants will only be awarded to “past legends” that are living.

Perhaps most important to players will be the program’s eight-year vesting period. The grants will be worth 50% of their value after four years, 75% after six and 100% after eight years, when a player will be able to sell their equity in PGA Tour Enterprises, the for-profit arm the Tour created for the program. At each vesting benchmark players will be responsible to pay taxes on the grants.

The program has been created to encourage loyalty to the Tour in the face of ongoing challenges from LIV Golf, and the requirements of maintaining membership (which includes a minimum of 15 starts each year) would mean players who join LIV Golf would not be eligible for the program or would give up any unvested equity if they were to join the rival circuit.

“We want the players to be fully aligned with their organization,” Dennis said. “It’s something no other sport has done before and we’re seeing an incredible amount of excitement about that.”

SSG valued the PGA Tour at $12.3 billion when the group, which is led by Fenway Sports, became a minority investor and the assumption is that valuation will continue to increase like most professional sports franchises in the United States.

The remainder of the initial $1.5 billion investment (roughly $600 million) will be awarded in recurring player grants of $100 million each year, beginning in 2025 through 2030. These grants will be awarded based on performance and Player Impact Program results with an eye toward young talent, like Ludvig Åberg or Nick Dunlap.

With shoulder on the mend, Taylor Pendrith pushes toward Presidents Cup bubble

Canadian contending at the cj cup byron nelson.

Change Text Size

Editor's note: This article was originally published on Thursday, May 2, during Round 1 of THE CJ CUP.

An injured shoulder isn’t ideal in pro golf, especially for a player who considers driver a premier asset.

Such has been Taylor Pendrith’s conundrum for the better part of two years. But he’s on the upswing at an opportune time, as the Canadian seeks a spot at his home country’s Presidents Cup later this fall.

Pendrith opened THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson in 7-under 64, one off the lead through Thursday’s morning wave at TPC Craig Ranch. The 32-year-old found soggy conditions to his liking with seven birdies on a bogey-free morning, his lowest opening round on TOUR since the 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic (where he finished T2).

The Toronto-area native also gained nearly 1.5 strokes off the tee, important context considering the shoulder ailment that reduced his clubhead speed and has reduced his competitive advantage in the long-game (he ranked No. 12 in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee in 2022, ranked No 40 in 2023 and currently ranks No. 151 in 2024).

The culprit: calcific tendonitis in his left shoulder, which first emerged in January 2023 at the Farmers Insurance Open. Pendrith has underwent three different nonsurgical procedures to address the issue; he received PRP injections the week of the WM Phoenix Open in February, and he considered surgery but opted against due to the need to work through the rotator cuff and consequent longer recovery.

Pendrith said Thursday that he has started to feel better in recent weeks, and the results match up. He arrived in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex on the strength of back-to-back T11 finishes (at the Corales Puntacana Championship, and at last week’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans alongside Corey Conners). After making his Presidents Cup debut in 2022 at Quail Hollow, he faces a long road ahead to regain his spot on the International Team (he’s currently No. 26), but recent developments bode well for a summertime move up the standings.

Taylor Pendrith gets up-and-down for birdie at CJ CUP Byron Nelson

“Been tough mentally for sure,” Pendrith said Thursday. “I would say my game is built around driving the golf ball and I've lost a lot of speed in the last year. Now I'm getting it back, so I can I guess fully commit to my driver swing and hit it hard again; whereas before I would flinch or ease off. Mentally it's been difficult. Getting back to kind of how I like to play golf I guess and can swing hard on the shots, so that’s a good feeling.”

Also consider the opening round a good sign for Pendrith’s beloved Toronto Maple Leafs, who face elimination Thursday in the first round of the NHL Playoffs (Toronto trails Boston, three games to two, in the best-of-seven series). Pendrith shot 7 under – perhaps the Leafs will take matters to a seventh game.

Tuesday evening, Pendrith attended a dinner of Presidents Cup International Team prospects, hosted by team captain Mike Weir (who once donned his Masters green jacket to drop the puck for a ceremonial face off at a 2003 Maple Leafs playoff game).

Pendrith knows Presidents Cups in his home country don’t come around often (the last was in 2007), and he intends not to let the window pass him by.

“Huge motivation for me obviously to get back on that team,” Pendrith said Thursday. “It being in Canada this year is extra motivation, and Mike Weir being the captain. Yeah, just to be in that room with all those guys and hear stories from previous Presidents Cups was really cool. It was a great dinner, and something I am really hoping to be a part.”

For the first time in a while, his shoulder is cooperating accordingly.

Maybe the PGA Tour's long-running model would have to be blown up to make that kind of money. McIlroy already suggested smaller fields and bigger purses, a suggestion not at all self-serving.
