PGA Tour leader loses ball in the fairway in the most ridiculous way imaginable

  • Follow on Twitter
  • Follow on Instagram

Akshay Bhatia's round was upended in bizarre fashion on Friday at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

PGA Tour | Twitter

Akshay Bhatia’s tee shot on the par-5 17th hole at the Rocket Mortgage Classic was laced.

His beautiful high cut did what all beautiful high cuts should do: it bisected the center of the fairway and tumbled forward, charging in the direction of the green. But then it did something that no beautiful high cut should do: it disappeared.

Bhatia must have thought his eyes were playing tricks on him when it happened. His ball had clearly split the center of the fairway on the hole, setting him up for another layup birdie opportunity at Detroit Golf Club . He was clearly in position for a 260ish-yard approach shot into an unguarded green, giving him at worst two looks at a birdie or better. So how, exactly, had he wound up standing in the fairway with a golf ball nowhere in sight?

As it turned out, the reason lay beneath his feet. Bhatia had smoked his drive alright, and he’d hit the center of the fairway just as he’d planned. But he’d managed to do so while sending his ball tumbling directly towards a green storm drain located in the dead center of the fairway. Irrigation be damned, Bhatia’s ball had rolled over the storm drain and, in a miraculous failure of golf course engineering, through the slits in the drain cover and down into the drain.

Bhatia did what any player — and particularly any PGA Tour tournament leader — would do: he called over a rules official.

“I’m fairly certain that’s a Callaway down there in the bottom,” Bhatia said to the official.

“Okay, we don’t have to get it,” the official said. “Unless you can figure out how to get it open.”

“You sure?” Bhatia shot back, a grin on his face.

You don't see this everyday 😂 @AkshayBhatia_1 's ball went missing in a drain @RocketClassic ! pic.twitter.com/vZlzuABJvy — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) June 28, 2024

With the help of some video review and Bhatia’s close eye into the ball in the storm drain, the rules official ruled that he would not be penalized for a lost ball.

The rules decision, the official said, came down to rules 16.1b and 16.1e of the rules of golf, by which the player gets free relief under Rule 16.1b if he finds the ball or Rule 16.1e if he doesn’t find it but it is known or virtually certain the ball is in the drainage basin under the grate. Given the video evidence of the disappearing ball (virtual certainty) and Bhatia spotting a Callaway (his ball) in the drainage grate, the official had no problem affording Bhatia free relief no nearer to the hole.

The 22-year-old pro took advantage of that relief swimmingly, blasting his second shot on the par-5 just off the green and settling for an eventful par. He would make five birdies on the day, including two in the holes immediately following sewer-gate, to push himself to 13 under for the tournament and in the 36-hole clubhouse lead at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Not bad, considering the lost ball.

Protesters face multiple charges after delaying Travelers

CROMWELL, Conn. -- Six climate protesters stormed the 18th green while the tournament leaders were lining up their putts for the final hole of regulation at the PGA Tour's Travelers Championship on Sunday, delaying the finish for about five minutes.

The protesters came from all directions around the green and waved smoke bombs that left white and red residue on the putting surface before Scottie Scheffler , Tom Kim and Akshay Bhatia finished their rounds. Some of the protesters were wearing white T-shirts with the words "NO GOLF ON A DEAD PLANET" in black lettering on the front.

Cromwell police said each protester was charged with first-degree criminal mischief, first-degree criminal trespass and breach of peace. They were released after posting $5,000 bonds, and they are scheduled to appear in court July 1.

"I was scared for my life," Bhatia said after finishing in a tie for fifth. "I didn't even really know what was happening.

"But thankfully, the cops were there and kept us safe, because that's, you know, that's just weird stuff."

The crowd surrounding the 18th green heckled the protesters by yelling profanities and cheered the police who intervened.

The PGA Tour issued a statement thanking the Cromwell Police Department "for their quick and decisive action" and noting that there was no damage to the 18th green. Scheffler also praised the officers.

"From my point of view, they got it taken care of pretty dang fast, and so we were very grateful for that," said Scheffler, the world's No. 1 player who later beat Kim in a sudden-death playoff for his sixth victory of the year.

"When something like that happens, you don't really know what's happening, so it can kind of rattle you a little bit. That can be a stressful situation, and you would hate for the tournament to end on something weird happening because of a situation like that. I felt like Tom and I both tried to calm each other down so we could give it our best shot there on 18."

Extinction Rebellion, an activist group with a history of disrupting events around the world, claimed responsibility for the protest. In a statement emailed to The Associated Press, the group blamed climate change for Saturday's electrical storm that injured two people at a home near the golf course at TPC River Highlands.

"This was of course due to increasingly unpredictable and extreme weather conditions," the statement read. "Golf, more than other events, is heavily reliant on good weather. Golf fans should therefore understand better than most the need for strong, immediate climate action."

After the protesters were tackled by police and taken off, Scheffler left a potential 26-foot clincher from the fringe on the right edge of the cup then tapped in for par. Kim, who trailed by 1 stroke heading into the final hole, sank a 10-foot birdie putt to tie Scheffler and send the tournament to a playoff.

Kim said the protest took his mind off the pressure.

"It kind of slowed things down," he said. "It took the meaning of the putt away for a second. Because for the past 17½ holes, all you're thinking about is golf, and suddenly, when that happens, your mind goes into a complete -- like, you're almost not even playing golf anymore. I thought it was a dream for a second."

After the players putted out in regulation, workers with leaf blowers came out to clean off the remaining powder, and the hole location was moved for the playoff, which began on No. 18. Scheffler beat Kim with a par on the first hole of sudden death.

"They left a lot of marks on the greens, which is not right for us players -- especially when two guys are trying to win a golf tournament," Kim said. "But I'm very grateful for the tour and the tour security for handling that really well and making us players feel a lot safer."

Inside a wild 48 hours for Nick Bienz, the Golf Galaxy-working Rocket Mortgage qualifier

Nick Bienz (left) and Ben Hoagland at the 108th Indiana Open at Notre Dame's Warren Golf Course. (Photo: John Fineran/USA TODAY Sports)

Nick Bienz is supposed to report to work on Thursday morning at 7:30. But the 27-year-old part-time Golf Galaxy employee – he works at one of the equipment and apparel chain’s stores on the northeast side of Indianapolis – won’t be clocking in because he has a 2:22 p.m. ET tee time at the PGA Tour’s  Rocket Mortgage Classic  in Detroit after securing his place in the field via an  eight-hole playoff in a Monday qualifier .

Someone please alert his boss.

“I still haven’t made that call,” Bienz said on Wednesday during a phone interview. “I think he knows already. The store’s group chat has been blowing up. They’ve been very supportive but I never technically made that call.”

Who can blame him? At its peak, Bienz said he had 920 text messages to respond to and noted, “I don’t even know that many people. It’s amazing how my life has turned upside down.”

Bienz shot 65 on Monday at The Orchards Golf Club in Washington, Michigan, and was relaxing in the grill room under the impression that his score would be good enough to earn one of four spots into the field – a life-changing moment for someone who had never played in any PGA Tour-sanctioned tournament let alone the big leagues. He said he has played in Monday qualifiers before with no luck but this was his first attempt this year. With multiple groups still finishing their rounds, Bienz enjoyed a celebratory beer or two.

“I need every ounce of alcohol right now to calm the nervous system and not try to vomit on myself,” Bienz told Ryan French of Monday Q in a video  shared on X , formerly known as Twitter. “That’s where we’re at right now.”

He downed the third beer after realizing he had celebrated prematurely and he still had to compete in a playoff. Eight holes later, his dream of playing on the PGA Tour became a reality. How many beers did he throw back afterwards?

“Just one,” he said. “I sat in the same chair at the golf course for 2 ½ hours in shock trying to respond to as many texts as I could and all the logistics for the tournament.”

First, he FaceTimed his fiancée on the cart ride back to the clubhouse. She was sobbing. “Do you know that you’re famous?” she asked.

Bienz, who played his college golf at the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), had no idea that he had gone viral. Ever since, fans have been sending him money via Venmo to help with his expenses, a friend at apparel maker TravisMathew sent him a care package of outfits for the week but he said he hasn’t landed a sponsor yet despite several inquiries including a beer company.

“I’m such a rookie at this I don’t even know the logistics of how I’d get a logo on a shirt in less than 24 hours,” said Bienz, who also received a new bag with the logo of his employer Golf Galaxy.

But he already has met Kevin Kisner, who posted on social media that the Tour should pair them together in the tournament.

“He came up to me and said, ‘Are you my beer drinking buddy?’ ” Bienz recalled. “Then he said, ‘The Tour screwed us, bro. I thought they were going to pair us together.’ ”

Bienz said on four occasions he’s flunked out of Korn Ferry Tour Q-School and also tried the PGA Tour Latinoamerica and Mackenzie Tour twice. His game has been in good form. On June 10, he shot 69 at the Northern Open, an Indiana section event, and won the one-day tournament. He has given himself to his wedding next May to determine whether he is going to continue chasing his dream or call it quits and settle down in a real job. Depending on how he plays in the Rocket Mortgage Classic, where the purse this week is $9.2 million, working in golf retail could be in a galaxy far, far away for him.

“Fortunately for me this week has thrown a massive wrench and I really have no idea what’s going to happen from here,” he said.

Climate protesters disrupt play at 18th hole of PGA Tour’s Travelers Championship

P rotesters ran onto the 18th green in the final round of the PGA Tour’s Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Connecticut, Sunday, leaving a powdery substance on the putting surface and delaying play for several minutes.

Video from broadcaster CBS showed several of the six demonstrators wearing shirts reading: “No golf on a dead planet.”

Extinction Rebellion, a climate activist group, said it was behind the incident.

Police quickly removed the protesters, allowing the final group, including leaders Tom Kim and Scottie Scheffler to finish the hole in a tie and move to a playoff.

The pair teed off on the 18th again and Scheffler went on to win.

He said he and Kim helped to steady each other as the police worked quickly.

“You don’t really know what is going on, you don’t really understand the situation,” Scheffler said in a post-match interview with CBS Sports. “There’s people running around everywhere and you don’t really know what’s going to happen.”

He credited the police with doing a great job to handcuff and remove the protesters.

The protesters were accused of one count each of criminal mischief in the first degree, criminal trespass in the first degree and breach of Peace, according to a news release from the Cromwell Police Department.

They each were released on a bond of $5,000 and are due in court July 1.

Kim told reporters it was like a dream but the moment temporarily took his mind off the importance of making his putt because he was worried about people getting hurt.

In a social media video, officers can be seen wrestling three protesters on the ground. Another protester is tackled by an officer and drops a bag they were holding. Fans can be heard booing and yelling obscenities at the protesters.

Sina Sadri, the 19-year-old fan who recorded the video, said he had looked away and when he returned his eyes to the green area there was a guy in the bunker.

“I instinctively took out my phone and started recording – and the mayhem unfolded,” he told CNN.

He described the demonstrators as using devices that left behind powder, not paint. There was a firework-like smell in the air, he said.

At the players’ news conference, Scheffler said the initial chaos with people running around was a little rattling.

“You don’t know if they’re peaceful, you don’t know what they’re doing, you have no idea what’s going on, so it can be a bit stressful,” he told reporters.

A PGA Tour senior spokesperson told CNN the protesters were “immediately arrested.”

“The powder on the green was removed, resulting in no damage to the 18th green,” Joel Schuchmann said. “Our thanks to the Cromwell Police Department for their quick and decisive action.”

CNN has reached out to law enforcement for more information.

In a statement released shortly after the incident, Extinction Rebellion said it was trying to draw attention to climate change.

“With this action, Extinction Rebellion is NOT protesting any individual or organization. Rather, the protest highlights the worldwide danger of climate breakdown,” the group said in its statement.

“Golf, more than other events, is heavily reliant on good weather. Golf fans should therefore understand better than most the need for strong, immediate climate action,” the group added.

Extinction Rebellion has a reputation for attention-grabbing tactics. Its activists have made international headlines for past protests including dumping green dye into Venice’s Grand Canal , gluing themselves to a Picasso painting , smashing bank windows and spraying fake blood over buildings to call attention to climate issues.

“At this point, the sole option remaining is to engage in unconventional forms of protest that bring attention to the severity of the climate emergency,” the group said in its release.

Hands up if you’re ready to be dazzled! From a ceremony structure designed to float on water to a jaw-dropping reception room with flowers blooming from every service, we’re swooning over every bit of this wedding. If you can believe it, that’s just the beginning. Julia Kaptelova artfully shot every detail, like the ballet performance guests were treated to and snow falling from the ceiling for the first dance! Prepare to be amazed and take a visit to the full gallery .

From About You Decor … Our design is a symbol of dawn and a distant endless horizon. Ahead is a long, happy life without any borders. An international couple, Pavel and Cherry, met in London and have been walking together for many years.

pga tour golf clothes

From the Bride, Cherry… My husband and I we decided to have our summer wedding in Moscow because the city is where his roots are. As we knew we were going to have the other wedding ceremony in China, we wanted our Moscow one to be very personal and intimate. We’ve known each other since we were fourteen, together with many of our friends whom we’ve also known for a decade.

I didn’t want to walk down the aisle twice so the plausibility of my request quickly came into discussion. The open pontoon stage was constructed in order to facilitate the bridal entrance on water, although there were concerns about safety as the last thing we wanted was probably a drowned bride before she could get on stage, picture that! I have to say on that day it wasn’t easy to get on the pontoon stage from the boat, in my long gown and high heels. Luckily my bridesmaids still noticed even though they stood the furthest from me on the stage, and helped me out without prior rehearsal. My girls could just tell whenever I needed a hand or maybe they were just so used to my clumsiness. Who knows 😂

We all love our photographer Julia! She’s so talented and her style is so unique. Our beloved host Alex is exceptional who made everyone laugh and cry. It was truly a blessing to have so many kind and beautiful souls on our big day. Thank you all!

I’m still not convinced this Moscow wedding, captured to perfection by  Sonya Khegay , isn’t actually an inspiration session—it’s just  that breathtaking. From the beautiful Bride’s gorgeous lace wedding dress and flawless hair and makeup to the pretty pastel color palette and stunning ceremony and reception spaces, this wedding is almost too good to be true. Do yourself a favor and see it all in The Vault now!

From Sonya Khegay … It was the last day of April and still very cold in the morning. The weather forecast wasn’t pleasing and no one expected that the sun would come out, but miracles happen and light rain gave way to the warm rays.

I love how all the details went together, you could feel the harmony in everything throughout the entire wedding day from the morning until the fireworks.

A gentle look of the bride, elegant but so airy and unique decor, the fresh and light atmosphere of early spring and, of course, true happiness in the eyes. My heart becomes so warm from these memories, it is always a pleasure to see the birth of a new family of two loving hearts.

You really can’t go wrong with simple: a beautiful Bride , perfectly pretty petals , loved ones all around. But add in an amazing firework show  to cap off the night and simple just became downright extraordinary. Captured by Lena Elisseva , with assistance by  Katya Butenko , this rustic Russian celebration is simply fantastic. See it all in the Vault right here !

From Lena Eliseeva Photo …  This cozy and warm summer wedding of gorgeous Natalia and Anton was in the middle of June. The young couple decided to organize their wedding themselves, and the day was very personal and touching. I am absolutely in love with rustic outdoor weddings, and this one is my favourite because of the free and easy atmosphere.

All the decor excluding the bride’s bouquet was made by a team of ten friends of the bride and groom. And it was charming – a light and beautiful arch, eco-style polygraphy and succulents, candy-bar with caramel apples and berries – sweet joys of summer.

At the end of ceremony the guests tossed up white handkerchiefs embroidered by Natalia’s own hands.

The most touching moment was the happy eyes of the groom’s grandmother, the most estimable person on the wedding. And the fireworks were a bright end to that beautiful day.

These photos from Lena Kozhina are so stunningly beautiful – as in you can’t help but stop and stare – it’s hard to believe it’s real life. But these pics are proof of this gorgeous Bride and her handsome Groom’s celebration at Moscow’s Fox Lodge , surrounded by vibrant colors and breathtaking blooms . Oh, and the idea of prepping for your Big Day outside in the sun ? Brilliant. See more bright ideas right here !

From Lena Kozhina … When we met with the couple for the first time, we immediately paid attention to Dima’s behavior towards Julia. There was a feeling of tenderness and awe, and we immediately wanted to recreate this atmosphere of love, care and warmth on their Big Day.

Later, when we had chosen a green meadow and an uncovered pavilion overlooking a lake as the project site, it only highlighted a light summer mood with colorful florals and a great number of natural woods. The name of the site is Fox Lodge and peach-orange color, as one of the Bride’s favorites, set the tone for the whole design – from the invitations, in which we used images of fox cubs to elements of serving guest tables and other decorative elements with the corresponding bright accents.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

pga tour golf clothes

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

pga tour golf clothes

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

pga tour golf clothes

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

pga tour golf clothes

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

pga tour golf clothes

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
