Percy Pigs: from sweet to M&S brand

A small, animated pig explores the Marks and Spencer shelves and gazes in wonder at their festive delights in the new Christmas advert. Percy the Pig was once a gummy sweet, but in his 29 years of life, he has become a character, a brand and the face of M&S.

When walking the aisles, Percy merchandise is plentiful. There are pillows, socks, pyjamas, towels, and kitchenware. The sweet is now a sauce, a juice, a biscuit. The list is endless.

Percy even has his own Christmas range, comprised of an advent calendar, décor, outfits, Percymas pies and even a Percy Pig stocking.

But why is this pig so successful? Ten years after his creation, Percy gained popularity when a new variation appeared: Percy Pig and Pals. Joined with cola cow and orange and strawberry sheep, we learned that Percy had friends. He was no longer a sweet, he was a pig with friends.

Percy’s character was developed further when he fell in love with Penny, a lemon and vanilla flavoured gummy pig. Then came blueberry, lime, orange and strawberry piglets that helped to brand Percy as a family man. There was even a range of Percy’s parents.

Marks and Spencer personified Percy the Pig and this ensured he was loved. Consumers want to follow Percy on his journey, whether it’s globetrotting around the world or starting a family. People love to try the newest flavours and variations. This little pig connects with customer emotions, just like his best friend Colin the Caterpillar.

Marks and Spencer traditionally targeted an older demographic, but as they pioneer into the digital world this is changing. Percy is well-loved by children, young adults and families.

On the surface Percy is adored by children for his cute nature, however, his appeal goes beyond this. Young adults have watched Percy’s story develop over their lifetime. They are attached to him, so continue to buy the sweet.

TikTok is full of videos of Generation Z who grew up with Percy. The pig mascot participates in the latest TikTok trends and dances at M&S stores across the UK. With hundreds of accounts creating unique content, it is impossible to escape the Percy love.

Annually, 16 million packets of Percy Pigs are sold, which is the equivalent of 10 sweets every second. Although other supermarkets have tried to replicate Percy’s success, it is impossible to compete. Sorry Kevin the Carrot, but Percy will always hold our hearts.

The wonderful world of Percy Pig

I was born back in 1992, making me more than 30 years old. Since then, I’ve brought out loads of flavours of sweets, fun seasonal treats (I LOVE to dress up) and my friends and family have even made an appearance too.

Did you know that in the last year alone, more than five million packets of original Percy Pig sweets were sold? But it’s not just the iconic sweets I’m known for. I’ve scored goals at Wrexham A.F.C, had my face featured on clothing, released nail varnish duos, and loads, loads more.

Highlights from a true British icon

Percy's 30th birthday

It was my 30th birthday in 2022 and I celebrated with a huge party in Fulham Palace! An iconic Percy Pig backpack and 30th birthday sweets were released to mark the extra special occasion.

Penny Pig and I celebrated 10 years together in 2023 with ‘You Give Me Butterflies’ sweets. Back in 2013, I met the most lovely lemon and vanilla-flavoured pigette. After many long sunset walks and romantic dinner dates together, the love of my life agreed to be my wife.

M&S' new Party Percy Pigs have six mixed-up fruity flavours

It's Percy as you've never seen him before.

Part of the Colin the Caterpillar 30th birthday celebrations , M&S is getting Percy into the spirit of things with the release of the new Percy Pig Party Time packs.

The multi-coloured rainbow sweets have switched up Percy's classic raspberry and grape flavour for a mish mash of six different fruity flavours, with each individual sweets having four of the six in one. The flavours invited to the party are peach, strawberry and cream, apple, plum, raspberry and classic Percy grape too.

Percy fans are bound to go wild for this new inventive iteration. It's certainly the wackiest yet and the sweets sound absolutely delicious. With four fruity flavours combined in each mouthful, you may just find yourself nibbling each corner to get a taste of them all.

How do I make an order?  - Just click on the product of your choice, add it to your cart. This will take you to your shopping cart where quantities can be changed. Then click 'checkout' to fill out your credit card details to pay for your chosen items. We also have a bank transfer option which will take longer as we have to wait for the payment to clear, please follow the instructions in the checkout cart.

How do I pay for my order? Is it safe to use my credit card? -  When you checkout you are directed to Stripe secure payment gateway where you can enter your details safely.

Payment Options -  On checkout you can either opt to pay by Credit Card, Paypal, Poli Live Bank Transfer, Afterpay or over the counter bank deposit. Credit Card, Afterpay and Paypal transactions are processed immediately and in most cases your order will be shipped on the same or next working day. Poli or Bank Transfer may take longer.

If you opt to pay by bank deposit your order will be shipped once the payment clears which generally takes 6-24 hours, overnight but in some cases (public holidays etc) this may take longer. If you are with Westpac it will be instant.

If you forgot to grab the bank details from the checkout please deposit orders into the account below. Please ensure you include your order number (i.e. #1234) as a reference when depositing. Your order number can be found in the order confirmation you receive by email.

I have a food allergy, how do I find out the ingredients in one of your products sold?  - If a product is listed on the website as Nut Free, Gluten Free, Caffeine Free, Sugar Free, Diary Free, Gelatin Free or Fat Free, it is because it is on the outside packaging of the product itself. Please  contact us  for specific product information if it is not listed and we will try to help. Currently we do not have the information for all products, but are hoping to have it in the future. We would suggest searching the internet if you are unsure about a product before you buy and more importantly, before consuming.

How long will my order take to arrive?  - Orders will arrive between 1- 7 days depending on the delivery option you choose and the day your ordered. (Currently there are no weekend courier runs, so if you order Thursday night or Friday your order will arrive Monday.) To have the best possible chance of getting your parcel overnight please have your order in before 2pm daily, so it can make our last courier pick up for the day, which is at 4pm. We try our very best, working late and past our normal operation hours to get all packages sent off asap. Please check your track and trace first and give your parcel 7 days before contacting us about your order. (In case it was made on a Thursday but doesn't arrive until the Monday or Tuesday if in a rural area.) Rural packages usually take 1 extra day. To see our shipping rates .

A product is 'Currently Out of Stock' or Disappeared from the site. How long until it's available again?  - Most items will be back in stock within two weeks others could be up to a month or 2 depending on the date of the next shipment. But they could also be able to be put back into stock immediately. What's the difference between an 'expiration date' and a 'best before date? -  An 'expiration date' is the date after which the product is of no use, whereas the 'best before date' indicates the date before the product gives its original flavour. Therefore it is still safe to consume products after this 'best before' date.

Our Policy on Best Before Dates  - We stock short shelf life items - the dates are always listed so please check before you buy. Some items may include, but are not limited to: Hostess Twinkies, HoHos, Zingers, Cupcakes, Snoballs and Ding Dongs, certain flavours of chips and other products. Once you buy them, they are not returnable, since the information is in the products description for you to see. This is why the choice is yours if you want them. Best by dates are put on by the manufacturers to advise you that the product is still good, but quality may decline. Percy Pig facts for kids

Percy Pig is a British brand of pig -shaped gummy raspberry, strawberry, cherry and grape-flavoured confectionery products made under licence in Germany by Katjes for Marks & Spencer which first appeared in stores in 1992. More than £10,000,000 was grossed between June 2009 and 2010 in Percy Pig sales in Marks and Spencer's UK branches alone. They contain just under 3.5% fruit juice and since May 2022 are suitable for vegans.

Until 2008, Percy Pig sweets were available in 100, 200, and 400 grams. The packaging has not changed size, but the middle size now contains 170 grams and the large size now contains 500 grams.

Percy Pig was created in 1992 and was sold in strawberry , blackcurrant and raspberry flavours.

After a brief hiatus from the shelves in 1997, the brand returned, and in 2008 the sweets made UK British Vogue' s 2008 hot list at number 11 on the top style bible's 40 hottest people and trends to watch over the coming months.

A Percy Pig appreciation society has been set up on Facebook and currently has 250,000 members.

The Percy Pig character appeared in M&S's 2021 Christmas advert voiced by Tom Holland in his first speaking appearance.

In April 2022, a large fibreglass Percy Pig statue was installed on the roof of a newly-opened Marks and Spencer store in Stevenage , Hertfordshire, to remain there for a year.

Marks & Spencer Percy Pig sweets originally contained real pig in the form of pork gelatin . In 2011 a "Veggie Percy" range was launched, a vegetarian variety of Percy Pig sweets replacing the gelatin with beeswax and pea protein, with green ears to indicate they were vegetarian.

In 2016 M&S began using a new gelatine-free recipe for some other varieties of Percy Pig sweets, and from May 2019 all Percy Pig sweets were 100 per cent gelatin-free, instead using pectin . This relaunch of the range also saw a new logo and packaging designs across the range.

In 2022, beeswax was removed from the recipe, making the product vegan.

Following on from the success of the original Percy Pig sweets, new varieties, flavours and characters were introduced. Amongst the first were "Percy Pig & Pals", which besides Percy also contained a cow (cola flavour) and sheep (orange and strawberry flavour) and "Percy Piglets", which are smaller versions of the main sweets. Percy gained a girlfriend in Penny Pig in 2010, with her sweets being lemon flavoured.

Besides the sweet range itself, Percy Pig has expanded to fruit juices, fizzy drinks, chocolates, popcorn, biscuits, cakes, muffins, ice cream, dessert sauces and mince pies, amongst others. In 2020, Marks and Spencer relaunched a Percy Pig advent calendar after being discontinued in 2018 and 2019. Toys, books, socks, party equipment, bed linen and piggy banks are amongst the non-food items with the Percy Pig branding.

Similar sweets are available from other retailers. One variation is "Eric the Elephant" produced by Sainsbury's . Tesco 's line sports the "Cool Cats" name, while Asda has other similar products called "Stanley Snail" and "Fredrick Frog". Lidl has "Henry Hippo" sweets which are vegan. Poundland, a discount retailer, released their own version in 2019 called "Dinky Dogs", although these are not vegetarian.

Outside of the United Kingdom, similar products in other countries are the Canadian "Juiced Up" (introduced 2009), the German "Fred Ferkel", the Dutch "Katja Biggetjes", the French "Petit Cochon" (launched 2007) and the Australian "Peggy Pig and Pals" introduced in Coles Supermarkets in 2009.

If you like marshmallow type gummies then these are definitely for you and include no animal products! Must be eaten in moderation but so so difficult! Chewy, sweet, fluffy, soft. Wouldnt say theyre overly fruity but each sweet has a mixed flavour
