Address & Directions

Classes and programs typically meet at our home base at the Brooklyn Bridge Park Boathouse. Your guide or instructor will provide information upon registration.

Nearby Transportation

There is indoor public parking at the One Brooklyn Bridge Park residential tower. Free parking in the neighborhood near the park is extremely limited and cannot be counted on, but you could try. However, kayaking in NYC is easy to access via public transportation! We highly recommend taking public transportation, biking or walking to the park. BBP is accessible by subway (A/C to High Street, F to York Street or 2/3 to Clark Street train station) bus (nearest buses are the B25, B61, B63, B67) or arrive by East River Ferry or NY Water Taxi.

If biking is your preferred means of transportation then the Brooklyn Bridge Park is the perfect place for you. Whether you enter from the North or South Entrance of the park, there’s a bike path that will lead you to Pier 4.

Updated November 17, 2022

As the snow melts away, New York City finally becomes a wonderful place to spend time outside. While your mental image of NYC may consist of images of skyscrapers and cramped streets, hidden in the city are pockets of trails, streams, and rivers that make for perfect outdoor adventures. An afternoon spent kayaking in NYC can take you through fresh streams winding through urban settings or in the Hudson River (and most of these areas are free to paddle in!).

What we love about canoeing and kayaking is that it is an activity for everyone: you can be a “natural” without even taking a lesson! That being said, we highly encourage all New Yorkers to take advantage of the beautiful scenery in the city, and what better way than on the water? We wrote this guide to our top recommendations for the most beautiful places to go canoeing and kayaking in New York City.

Sea Kayak Tour of New York City

We start from Liberty State Park and paddle past the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, crossing busy New York Harbor to lower Manhattan.

There, we find some interesting conditions before we slip past the ferries to get a view of South Street Seaport and the East River bridges.

We’ll ride the current to Valentino Park for lunch. Later, we play in strong currents near Governors Island before returning across the harbor. This area is well known for rough conditions, strong currents, and heavy traffic. Due to the currents, there are few opportunities for rest stops.

Throughout the New York City kayak tour, we look for conditions to play in and run short skill sessions. You’ll love this trip if you’re a strong paddler.

Please arrive 20-30 minutes before the program start time to get set up with your equipment so we can get the program started on time.

The  Buffalo River  can let you discover the city’s industrial history and check out fantastic views of the city skyline as it empties into Lake Erie. The water is generally flat, allowing you to paddle in either direction.

There are a few places to launch along the river, depending on how far you want to paddle. A good place to launch for city paddling is at the Ohio Street launch. You can rent kayaks from several places in Buffalo.

Ohio Street, Buffalo, NY 14204.

10: Rondout Creek

View this post on Instagram A post shared by A Day Away Kayak Rentals (@adayawaykayakrentals)

You can launch at the access point just off County Road 23 or you can launch at the kayak outfitter near Eddyville. You can paddle the creek in either direction but depending on your launch point, you may need to portage around the dam if you don’t want to turn around.

CR-25, Kingston, NY 12401.

11: Moose River Plains

The Moose River Plains is a wilderness area within the Adirondack Forest Preserve. This can be a remote spot but can be ideal for multi-day trips and kayak camping. There are several trails that can be paddled, with some requiring short portages to link between ponds.

You can rent kayaks on the eastern shores of Fourth Lake, where you’ll also find a public launch.

The river here is fast flowing, but is also  rain dependent . During the summer, the rapids tend to be Class I and II, so it’s recommended that you have some whitewater experience prior to paddling, and take added safety precautions, such as  wearing a helmet . Kayak and rafting tours are available in the state park.

Canoeing in Upstate NY: 9 best waterways to paddle

  • Updated: Oct. 12, 2015, 12:00 p.m. |
  • Published: Oct. 12, 2015, 11:00 a.m.

With more than 7,500 lakes, ponds and reservoirs and more than 70,000  miles of rivers and streams, New York state offers paddlers of all skill level excellent opportunities on the water. If you have already tried to kayak  and stand-up paddle board , try canoeing for a change. Canoeing works the upper body and core, but beginners just need to be in moderate shape to have fun with this activity.

Some state parks  rent canoes and outfitters will also rent canoes and offer tours or lessons from spring until fall. Stay safe and wear a  personal flotation device (PFD)  when paddling.

Find a canoeing buddy and explore the beautiful lakes and rivers upstate New York has to offer.

Think we missed a location? Add it in the comments!

Canoe-Picnic Point Clayton, N.Y. A canoe enthusiast's dream: this state park in the Thousand Islands  is only accessible by boat. A wooded area offers a quiet camping area. The picnic ground, south of the camping area, has a gazebo and a cooking facility. * More information:  nysparks.com

St. Regis Canoe Area Franklin County, N.Y. As the only designated canoe area in New York State, this location in the Adirondacks  will not disappoint. This 18,400-acre canoe area offers 50 ponds spanning from a 0.5-acre unnamed pond to 388-acre St. Regis Pond. * More information: dec.ny.gov

Essex Chain Lakes Complex Hamilton and Essex Counties, N.Y. Waterfront property? How about waterfront camping? Essex Chain Lakes Complex offers 13 shore-side camping sites, perfect to take a rest after a long day of canoeing. Eight lakes make up the Essex Chain located within the Adirondack Forest Preserve. The Hudson River makes up the eastern boundary. * More information:  dec.ny.gov

Schodack Island  Schodack Landing, N.Y. This state park sits south of Albany  and has seven miles of Hudson River and Schodack that line the park. A Bird Conservation Area makes up part of the park, which you may be able to spot bald eagles, ospreys and blue herons . * More information:  nysparks.com

Alder Lake Ulster County, N.Y. Located in the heart of the Catskills , this 45-acre lake does not have much boating activity making trips here quiet and relaxing. Come explore why USA Today  called this site one of the best in the Catskills. * More information:  dec.ny.gov

The Niagara River  Buckhorn Island State Park or Beaver Island State Park in Grand Island, N.Y. A quick jaunt away from the famous Niagara Falls , these two state parks give canoeing access to the Niagara River. On a nice sunny summer day, paddlers will see boaters happily enjoying lunch. However, paddlers can uniquely access the Niagara during late winter or early spring with flows of ice on the river.  * More information for Buckhorn Island: nysparks.com * More information for Beaver Island:  nysparks.com

Oneida Shores Park  Brewerton, N.Y. This Onondaga County Park in Central New York  gives paddlers access to the Oneida Lake and Muskrat Bay. Novices may enjoy this lake, but still use caution because the lake can be subject to storms and winds that produce high waves. * More information:  Onondagacountyparks.com

North-South Lake  Haines Falls, N.Y. As the biggest and most popular state campground in the Catskill Forest Preserve, this 84-acre lake offers plenty of natural beauty to explore. Motorized boats are not allowed which makes this lake a quiet destination. Canoe rentals are available. * More information: dec.ny.gov

Lamoka Lake and Waneta Lake Schuyler County, N.Y. Avoid the motor boat traffic on the larger Finger Lakes  and visit the smaller lakes  in the region for a quieter day. Pack a picnic and enjoy Lamoka Lake and Waneta Lake, found in between Keuka  and Seneca Lakes . * More information for Lamoka Lake: dec.ny.gov * More information for Waneta Lake:  dec.ny.gov

  • Published May 25, 2024 Updated May 29, 2024

Summer is a great time to get outside and be active. It’s also a good time for jumping into pools, rivers, oceans, ponds or whatever body of water you can find.

Swimming and paddling aren’t just refreshing — they can offer low-impact ways to get fit. The pull of gravity doesn’t feel as strong underwater, and water provides a lot of resistance. That lets you work hard without jolting your bones and joints.

So this summer, consider picking up a paddle or strapping on some goggles. Here are a few of our favorite water workouts from recent years.

1. Make lap swimming a workout.

There’s nothing wrong with getting into the water and simply swimming until you get tired. But if you have regular access to a lap pool, there are real benefits to taking your swimming game up a notch.

The best way to begin is with some swim-training fundamentals, like how to get more from your stroke and the importance of intervals. In this article, we break down the basic nomenclature (what’s the difference between a 1x200 and a 4x50 anyway?) and suggest a few simple workouts to get started .

2. Paddle a kayak.

Kayaking is one of the best core and upper body workouts you can do on the water. What’s more, it can take you in and around countless hidden natural wonders that you would never find without a boat.

But to do it properly and not totally exhaust your arms, you have to engage your legs and trunk as you paddle. It takes some practice, and serious kayakers spend their lives mastering the forward stroke. In this article, we give you the basics .

3. Try a pool exercise routine.

Not everyone was cut out to swim laps. For some, it’s boring; for others, too tiring. Some of us simply sink .

If that sounds familiar, or if you are just seeking a great low-impact workout, it’s worth looking into pool exercises. Some are geared toward older adults and people recovering from injury, while others are hard core enough to exhaust any athlete.

In this article, we provide a few resources for finding classes and offer one workout to try next time you wade into your local pool .

4. Stand up on a paddleboard.

Stand-up paddling (or SUPing) has grown steadily in popularity over the last couple decades. What was once an obscure way to use an old surfboard has become a sport in its own right.

Paddleboards give you a unique vantage above the water’s surface as you explore lakes and rivers. They also provide a great workout. Unlike kayaking, where you sit in your boat, stand-up paddling requires you to immediately engage your legs as you balance and try to move the board around.

It takes some practice to get the hang of it — so expect to fall in the water a few times. This guide will help you get started .

5. Get outside and swim.

If you are an experienced swimmer looking to mix up your routine — or if you just hate the taste of chlorine — consider a little open water swimming. Whether in a lake, a gentle river or the ocean, swimming in natural bodies of water offers a whole suite of new experiences and challenges.

In this article, we share a few tips to break away from the buoyed lanes and strike out on your own .

6. Go surfing — in town.

Just because you live in a big city doesn’t mean that you can’t spend a summer day catching a few waves. While the most famous surf locations might be in Maui or Southern California, many urban areas like New York or Boston can be welcoming places to learn the sport. The waves are small enough to be forgiving and some of them are even accessible by public transit.

In this article, we offer up some resources and inspiration for becoming an urban surfer .

None of the AI tools are as sharp as users may expect — but the companies that have begun experimenting likely are farther ahead than those that have not started at all.

Justin Dawes

Many of the travel booking platforms that experimented with generative AI tools early are now releasing second or third versions of that tech.

That’s been the case for Expedia, Kayak, and HomeToGo, all of which have announced upgrades or new AI tools in recent months.

Based on the tests that Skift has been able to do so far, none of the tools are as sharp as users would like — but those companies likely are farther ahead than those that have not started at all.

Some of the projects highlighted below will be part of the discussion next week at the Skift Data + AI Summit in New York City. Kayak chief scientist Matthias Keller and Expedia chief architect Rajesh Naidu are slated to speak, among others.

Expedia

Expedia earlier this month said that it would be adding multiple AI tools for various parts of a trip, including inspiration, planning, booking, customer service, and more.

The main tool is Romie, an AI-powered travel agent and assistant. Users can access the chatbot individually or in groups on Whatsapp, text message, or the Expedia app.

A quick test in WhatsApp shows that Romie can answer questions about destinations and provide options with links for flights, hotels, and activities. Clicking on a link opens that product in the Expedia app.

(Expect a full test soon detailing how these multiple features work.)

Romie is able to proactively suggest alternatives if there is an unexpected event that could cause a travel disruption, like poor weather or a flight delay, according to the app.

The Expedia app is also getting an itinerary builder and a tool for users to compare destinations. The online customer help center has been updated with AI to resolve problems more quickly, the company said, and guests can now view AI-generated review summaries for at the top of each individual hotel’s review page.

HomeToGo

HomeToGo , the Germany-based metasearch engine and booking site for vacation rentals, last week shared its vision for an AI assistant that helps users with search, booking, and post-booking support.

Completion of a “Super AI Sunny” chatbot is the goal, but the company is building it in steps.

HomeToGo is testing one of those building blocks in a new customer service chatbot called AI Sunny, which repurposed the previous traditional chatbot. The company said that so far, AI Sunny has reduced the transfer of customers to human agents by about 40%.

AI Sunny is in addition to an AI-powered search tool, called AI Mode, which Skift tested after it was released last year.

HomeToGo plans to eventually merge the AI Sunny and AI Mode products to create the foundation of Super AI Sunny for three uses:

  • Enabling guests to search for a rental using everyday language. For example: “A two-bedroom villa with a pool that’s close to great hiking trails in Italy.”
  • Answering questions about specific rentals on topics like cancellation policies and parking options
  • Providing tips based on the rental location, such as packing lists, local restaurant recommendations, and weather forecasts.

HomeToGo also said last week that it’s using Google Cloud’s Vertex AI to build various products as part of a goal toward a reimagined marketplace fully powered by AI. Vertex AI gives software developers access to several third-party generative AI models in addition to Google’s, allowing the developers to select which model is best suited for each individual project.

Google’s Gemini model powers HomeToGo Smart AI Reviews, a tool in testing that summarizes a property’s guest reviews and highlights key features.

Kayak

Travel metasearch engine Kayak earlier this year released the first version of a reimagined travel planning and booking process, a tool called Ask Kayak .

The user starts with a prompt in everyday language about a specific destination. The tool then opens a full webpage with options for flights, lodging, and car rentals, along with AI-generated information about the destination.

As the Skift test from March showed, the tech still needs some work  — but CEO Steve Hafner is hopeful that AI will lead to a better future for online travel booking companies.

Kayak was one of the first travel companies to announce a plugin on ChatGPT Plus. It allows ChatGPT to provide information and links about specific flights based on information from Kayak.

Along with Ask Kayak, the company released a tool meant to read flight fare information from a screenshot and then search for a better price.

Kayak is owned by Booking Holdings.
