4 Tips to Follow When Visiting a Plant Nursery

Choosing Plants

Pick Out Plants at Nursery

Compare several different choices of plants at the nursery before deciding on the right one.

iStockphoto.com

For some folks a trip to the nursery to select plants is fun and exciting; for others, it's pure puzzlement and confusion.

Tip #1: Shop during the week.

If you really want to spend time shopping, Saturday and Sunday are not the best days. Thursday is usually a good day. Trucks deliver inventory throughout the week, and shopping before the weekend rush will help you get the best selection.

Tip #2: Take your time.

Make a first pass. Wander through first and look at everything, getting a general idea of what's available and what you want. Then get a cart and select your plants.

As you're looking around, observe where plants are placed. Plants that are in full sun throughout the day require the same environment in your home landscape. Some annuals are shade tolerant, but in general, most annuals need full sun.

Don't forget to read the plant tags. They hold key information about the plant's needs, spacing required, and size at maturity. Local nurseries usually have their own tags, which provide tips about how to care for a plant in your home climate. Remember, plant requirements vary depending on how far north or south you live, or what zone you're located in. A plant that was originally grown in Minnesota will tolerate more sun than when it is planted at your home in Georgia. So rely on local information more than what is provided from the grower.

If you're interested in plants that will be with you for more than one season, consider perennials. Typically perennials are planted in garden beds, but many work equally well in containers. In many parts of the country you can overwinter perennials right in the containers. One of the most important things to remember about perennials is the "rule of three." It refers to the fact that it generally takes about three years for a perennnial to reach its ultimate size. Year one is getting them established by watering them well. In the second year you can expect to see growth and more flowering, and by year three they're fully developed.

So how long do perennials live? It varies with the plant, but it can be anywhere from a few years to several hundred years.

Tip #3: Purchase plants with more buds than blooms.

Although a plant in full bloom may look more attractive now, the one in bud will give you more color after you've planted it in your home landscape. In addition, plants in bud will not suffer nearly as much transplant shock as plants in full bloom.

Tip #4: Inspect plant roots.

Don't be afraid to take a plant out of its pot. You don't want to purchase a plant that's totally root bound. If you do end up with a plant that has a thick mass of roots, take a knife and cut through the roots to loosen them before you plant it. Give it extra water until it gets well established.

Remember, plants are an investment in your landscape. Take your time, use all the available information, and enjoy yourself when plant shopping.

Students from Tualatin High School Use Field's Creek every year to learn about testing water quality. Below is an article they wrote about their experiences:

Tualatin High School, SWRP, and Bosky Dell Natives By, Nishan Senthirajah

The Student Watershed Research Project is a self-support program of Portland State University’s Environmental Science and Management Department. This great group of people work with students, teachers, scientists, businesses, governmental agencies, and community groups to link watershed education with the collection of high quality data. SWRP is on a mission to develop awareness, knowledge, commitment, and skills leading to a responsible behavior and productive actions to benefit water quality and watershed resources.             The Tualatin High School IB Environmental Systems and Societies class recently visited Fields Creek to test its water quality and investigate what lies within and around that water. We found incredible things and gained great knowledge of how the water quality we study in class actually applies to the outside world. For students, it is truly fascinating when you get to experience science first hand.             My classmates, teachers, and I discovered many things during our visit to Fields Creek. One thing in particular that stood out to my classmates and I were the aquatic macroinvertebrates. These insects have no backbone and are visible to the naked eye, but are quite small. They live in the water for all or part of their lives, so their survival has a great relation to the water quality. Macroinvertebrates are sensitive to different physical and chemical conditions. If there is a change in the water quality, then the macroinvertebrates community may change as well. So the abundance of the macroinvertebrates community composition in a water body can be used, along with other abiotic indicators, to provide an estimate of a water body’s health.             Our class tested multiple sites and found that Bosky Dell had a huge diversity of macroinvertebrates.  We found many Mayfly, Caddisfly, and Stonefly larva, which are sensitive to water conditions, and only live in healthy streams. We estimated that we caught a total of 75 different organisms! At other sites we tested we only caught about 20 organisms, and 19 of them were tolerant to bad water conditions.             My fellow classmates and I are extremely grateful to Bosky Dell Natives for letting us use their stream for our water quality testing. Not only did we gain a great deal of knowledge during our visit, but also restoration at Fields Creek has been a success based on our findings.

Gardening - It's for the birds!

Are your birds well fed?

When I first started Bosky Dell Natives, I had a permit in a logging zone, and many of our plants were rescued from areas that were destined to be developed or from construction sites. 20 years ago we had a really cool tag, but we lost it! A customer stopped by with her favorite native plant book, and was using our old tag as a bookmark. We have been reminiscing about our old tag and realized we didn't have one left. We made a new one this afternoon, and we're looking for a place to have it printed. If you happen to have an original you're willing to part with, we'll give you a plant in trade! Now the majority of our plants are grown in house from seeds or cuttings. We still occasionally rescue rare and unusual plants if we hear about impending construction in time. Here's a preview of our new design:

9/12 DITCH RESTORATION/DEMONSTRATION PROJECT PHASE 2:   Saturday, October 15th 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM

We really need your help for this project!   We will be restoring the ditch that runs from Bosky Dell Lane to the Fields Creek Bridge on the downhill side. This project is designed to be a demonstration of how important ditches are.

phase 2  will be planting the ditch and a follow up removal of invasive species that snuck back in after Phase 1 (see below). DON'T DITCH THE DITCH. Please help in any way if you can! We will be serving some snacks and at the end of the party we will be giving thanks for the opportunity to restore the ditch.  Please show up in comfortable clothes you can work in and get dirty, and please call me at  503-638-5945  if you have any questions. 6/13 DITCH RESTORATION/DEMONSTRATION PROJECT PHASE 1:   SUNDAY, JUNE 26th 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM

We really need your help for this project!   We will be restoring the ditch that runs from Bosky Dell Lane to the Fields Creek Bridge on the downhill side. This project is designed to be a demonstration of how important ditches are. They act as a channel to divert water and direct it downhill to our streams and rivers. I want to bring awareness as to how much ditches can and do help with keeping our rivers clean by trapping sedimentation and impurities that travel downhill, off the pavement with the rain. We want to plant this ditch with lots of sedges, rushes, ferns and wildflowers. The idea is that it will be beneficial to wildlife, beautiful for people to see as they drive down the road, protect fish and wildlife, and help clean up our rivers and streams. These plants have a big job ahead of them to trap all of these impurities and protect the streams and rivers. With years of filtering and collecting debris, the lower end of the ditch may need to be scooped out and replanted to enable it to continue to cleanse the water path. If this needs to be done, it's just a good indicator as to how beneficial the plants were in protecting the stream. I hope that this ditch project will educate the public and inspire others to do what they can, with ditches everywhere.  Phase 1   will be the removal of invasive species, while  phase 2  (this fall) will be a follow up removal of invasive species that snuck back in, and planting the ditch. It is volunteers like you that help us keep our rivers and streams healthy and clean!

BEE BUZZ! My friend Rian has worked with me at Bosky Dell since he was a young kid. He is now a berry farmer & helps me during his off-season. He learned about bee attractors working with native plants at Bosky Dell and applied that knowledge to increase his crop production. He says the neighboring farms have bee boxes for bees. Rian invested in native bee attractive plants & has integrated them into his fields of berries. He has much better pollination than the neighboring farms because he knows what it takes to " bee attractive!" The bees may live at the neighboring farms, but they spend their days buzzing their favorite blossoms at Rians. GO NATIVE - BEE HAPPY!

FEELING SLUGGISH?! HOW ABOUT A QUICK LESSON IN NATIVE SLUGS.....

Above is a photo of the colorful Pacific Banana Slug. These large slugs are in the family Arionidae and the subfamily Ariolimacinae. While the Pacific Northwest is home to a variety of slugs, not all of them are native. The native species play an important ecological role in the natural environment, but exotic species tend to ravage our crops in an often irritating and sometimes expensive manner.

Celebrating 50 yrs. of Selling Happiness!

In 1974, Floorcraft Home Improvement Center acquired a vacant carwash directly across the street from our current facility in San Francisco, CA. It was a dream of the owners to create an oasis of plants and trees in the “industrial district.” Thus, Floorcraft Garden Center was born. More than 40 years later (including a slight name change), Flowercraft continues to flourish, meeting the needs of a faithful customer base as well as the trades, while gaining new fans with a lush selection of quality plants and earth-friendly gardening products. We carry succulent plants for pots in your home, Japanese Maples to grace your garden, and even Christmas trees.

What our customers are saying...

I trust Gurney's. Their 1 year guarantee really helps, and gives me the confidence I need to purchase plants I have never grown before. I'm really looking forward to growing Pawpaws, and love that I can rest assured that they will replace or reimburse my order if they die within this first year. It's a very nice thing to know that I'm not just throwing my money at a company and hoping for the best. With Gurney's, I KNOW that things will go well, because their customer service is excellent. - Dec 01 Source

Can't beat the candy onions from Gurney's seed. They are easy to grow and very sweet mild onions. They also store extremely well. I rarely have to buy onions since my candy onion last from harvest until April and my newly planted ones are often ready for pulling in June. - Dec 05 Source

I have purchased from Gurney's in the past when I had a large garden. After several years without garden space, I am again ready to get dirt under my fingernails. I always had good results with Gurney's seeds in the past, so here I am again! - Dec 02, Source

I know it's not local, but their fruit trees and vines cannot be beat, and I save so much time shopping around. It's done and now I can go on about my business of gardening while I await spring when my order arrives. - Dec 02 Source

Gurney's is a great place to get seeds, they have everything that you would need to have a awesome garden. They have almost every seed that you would want everything to veggies, fruits and trees! I would highly recommend ordering from Gurney's seed & nursery co. - Nov 18 Source

PEST CONTROLS

In 1974, Doug Chaney started mowing lawns in order to bring in some extra income for his young family.  As Doug’s reputation as a kind, reliable and skilled professional grew, his clients asked him to take on more and more lawn and landscaping maintenance.  Before long, Doug and his wife Sharon decided to purchase a new home with 16 acres of property.  They put up a barn and small office, and Chaney’s Nursery was officially established.

Almost a half a century later, the nursery still sits on that same property.  Though it has gone through much growth and change over 50 years, a few things remain the same.  Though Doug passed away in 2006, Sharon, along with her son Heath and his wife Cindy, still run the business day-to-day, and they still treat customers as family and friends.

The nursery also continues to provide a level of service and expertise unmatched by any other garden center in the area.  Friendly and knowledgeable salespeople provide a personalized, relaxed and comfortable shopping experience in an eye-appealing layout unique to Chaney’s Nursery.

We hope you’ll stop and see us and take advantage of all Chaney’s Nursery has to offer.  Whether you’re a green thumb on the weekend or a professional landscaper, we look forward to serving you soon.

Elections Today

Recent projections, delegate tracker, latest election news, yes, you can have a tidy native-plant garden. here are some tips.

For decades, many American gardeners looked at native plants and saw weeds

For decades, native plants were relegated to the “weed” section of many American gardeners' minds. Most nurseries didn’t stock them. But that’s slowly changing .

Native plants provide food and shelter for bees, butterflies, birds and other beneficial critters. They effortlessly grow healthier and stronger than exotic species, seldom need fertilizers or other amendments, and generally require little or no supplemental water once established. They’ve grown for hundreds or thousands of years just fine without us, evolving along with native insects, which recognize them as food.

So, why don’t more people plant them?

I’ll tell you one reason why: Unless carefully selected, the plants in a native garden can get messy, a look that some people embrace but others do not. It's one thing if you’re growing a meadow , but you might want things neater in a small urban garden or in a suburban community with a homeowners association.

But that’s on the gardener, not the plants, because it’s absolutely possible to have a structured and beautiful native garden.

This old mantra emphasizes the importance of considering sunlight exposure, water accessibility and soil pH levels when selecting plants . Plant habit — its shape and size — also should be front of mind.

Familiarize yourself with the mature sizes of your fledgling plants when deciding where to place them. Don’t, for instance, plant tall natives along a walkway, where they may grow to block access or flop over by mid-season, especially after rainfall.

Place taller plants and those more likely to lean at the back of a border, with shorter, tighter ones in front to help hold them in place and keep edges tidier. For beds that can be viewed from all sides, place the taller plants in the center.

Avoid planting one-offs. Planting clusters of the same species or color will make the garden appear cohesive.

Because native plants aren’t sterile, as many hybridized and exotic species have been bred to be, some spread readily by dropping seeds after they bloom. Others spread via underground runners, sending up new plants as they travel across the bed.

This does not mean they are “invasive,” a term used to describe aggressive exotic plants that spread to outcompete native species. In fact, it’s a desirable trait when aiming to fill a meadow with native plants, just perhaps less so when attempting to appease your HOA.

The solution lies in research. Look for plants with “clumping” or “mounding” habits that will stay put, and avoid those described as “runners” or “fast spreaders.”

Asclepias tuberosa (butterfly weed), for instance, will not move or migrate. Its cousin, Asclepias syriaca (common milkweed), can be aggressive, weedy and difficult to remove. Both plants are important food sources for monarch butterfly caterpillars and considered beneficial to the ecosystem. But one might be better for your garden than the other.

If plants reseed where you don’t want them, remove them and plant them elsewhere (free plants!) or trade them with a friend.

Dig up and divide plants every three years to prevent crowding. And if your natives threaten to become unruly, mow them down before they set seeds at the end of the season.

Don’t simply scatter wildflower seeds and expect them not to grow wild. They will, which makes them perfect for a dedicated wildflower bed or a hilly slope but perhaps less than perfect elsewhere.

Consider native grasses, sedges, groundcovers and clover as substitutes for common turf grasses, which rely on ground-polluting amendments, pollinator-killing pesticides and regular mowing while contributing little to the ecosystem.

If necessary, keep just a small lawn border to define the space (and appease your neighbors), and keep beds and borders neatly edged.

Include native shrubs in your design to retain structure year-round. Statues, arbors, benches and birdhouses also add visual interest.
