Breaking news, arizona rancher calls out kamala harris for last-minute border trip, says she ‘encouraged illegal immigration’.

Vice President Kamala Harris is set to make an appearance at the US border in Arizona on Friday.

But one nearby rancher is crying foul over her only now looking like she cares.

“Donald Trump built the wall and upheld our immigration laws. On day one, she stopped the wall and encouraged illegal immigration,” Tyler Klump, whose cattle ranch on the Arizona border in Douglas is a  superhighway for illegal crossings from Mexico , told The Post.

Cattle rancher Tyler Klump

Klump says he believes the Democratic presidential nominee is trying to show she’s serious about the border crisis only because of the election.

Harris is set to tour the remote border stretch in Douglas on Friday as part of a presidential campaign stop.

As part of her role in the Biden administration, Harris was  tasked with helping to stop the illegal crossings  at the border by addressing the “root causes of migration.”

But under her watch, illegal migrants poured over the border by the millions.

“Either purposefully or not, she is hurting our country with illegal immigration,” Klump said.

While on the campaign trail, Harris has referenced her time as a prosecutor in the “ border state ” of California — both as the state’s attorney general and San Francisco’s district attorney — where she says she cracked down on cartels.

Arizona rancher Tyler Klump climbs through an open floodgate in the border wall.

Harris has also pledged to sign a bipartisan border bill that failed to pass earlier this year, which would boost Border Patrol agents and funding for the wall.

However, she made just one trip to the border as vice president, in June 2021, when she traveled to El Paso, Texas.

Border Patrol sources who were present for the visit previously told The Post they were instructed to completely sanitize the area to hide the true severity of the crisis during her trip.

The Post toured Klump’s property in August, when piles of trash had been left behind by smugglers.

The picturesque ranch was littered with discarded water bottles, backpacks, “carpet shoes” — footwear with slip-on pieces of carpet to hide footprints in the sand — and ladders used to climb over the border wall.

Vice President Kamala Harris waves as she boards Air Force Two following a campaign event in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, U.S., September 25, 2024.

Sometimes, the cows on Klump’s ranch mistakenly eat the trash, which can make them sick or even kill them.

“It directly affects my cattle and my livelihood … It has killed my cattle. I’ve lost a substantial amount of money,” Klump said at the time.

In recent months, illegal migrant crossings have hit new lows for the Biden-Harris administration following new restrictions on asylum access.

The Border Patrol recorded roughly 83,000 migrant encounters in June, 56,000 in July and 58,000 in August — down from 250,000 in December.

Before that, the Biden-Harris admin saw record levels of illegal crossings at the southern border, while also allowing 1.3 million migrants to fly directly or use a port of entry appointment phone app to enter the US.

A smuggler covers his face in the background as another photographs migrants before they cross the Border Wall into the United States from Sonora, Mexico as photographed from Ruby, Arizona, U.S., June 26, 2024.

However, during those low months, Klump has still seen smugglers coming through and trying to evade detection as they sneak both drugs and people across the border.

“The foot traffic is as high as it’s ever been,” Klump previously said.

At the time, Klump shared a message for Harris: “Kamala, you’re not helping anything. You’re hurting us,” he said.

“You’re very much putting money in the hands of the cartels and putting money in the hands of a lot of people, but you’re darn sure not helping out your constituents,” said Klump.

The Arizona border is largely controlled by the  notorious Mexican Sinaloa cartel , which pumps its supply of illicit fentanyl into the US.

In 2022, 50% of the deadly fentanyl seized in the US  was confiscated in Arizona.

In Will & Harper , Two Friends Talk

Portrait of Bilge Ebiri

This review was published on January 23, 2024, out of the Sundance Film Festival. Will & Harper is now on Netflix.

One of the most ecstatic responses I’ve ever seen at Sundance came at the world premiere of the documentary Will & Harper , Josh Greenbaum’s film about a cross-country road trip taken by Will Ferrell and his trans best friend Harper Steele. Warm receptions are often guaranteed for movie stars and progressive causes at Sundance, but one can usually tell when the applause is dutiful and when it’s genuine. In this case, the standing ovation was immediate and explosive. The festival audience clearly ate this one up, in part because Will & Harper also happens to be a very funny movie about two comedians stuck on a road trip together.

Ferrell and Steele both started at the same time on Saturday Night Live in the 1990s — one as an actor, the other as a writer — long before Steele transitioned at the age of 61. Steele quickly became someone who could write best to Ferrell’s strengths (she remembers that in Ferrell’s first season many on the SNL staff didn’t find him funny) and was later named head writer of the show, before departing in 2008 to work for Ferrell’s comedy outlet Funny or Die. (She also wrote or co-wrote several of the actor’s films, including my beloved Eurovision: The Story of Fire Saga .) As Ferrell tells it, the Iowa-born Steele was something of a tough guy at the time, someone who loved drinking “shitty beer” and hitch-hiking and road tripping across the country. And while Harper acknowledges that “there was this other persona that I don’t much like anymore,” she also insists she hasn’t changed that much. “I was always Harper Steele,” she says. “Will was always friends with Harper Steele.” And the old shit-kicker hasn’t entirely gone away. “Instead of an asshole, I’ll be a bitch,” she quips.

The idea for the documentary grew out of Ferrell’s desire to accompany Steele on her first trip across the country after transitioning. She still loves country roads and dive bars and highway diners. “I just don’t know if it loves me back now,” she admits. “I don’t know if I can go to those same places as Harper.” These kinds of serious insights are often accompanied by funnier observations. “When I road tripped as a guy, I brought two T-shirts, three underwears, and one pair of jeans,” Steele says. Things have changed, she notes, as the camera cuts to an entire suitcase full of women’s shoes. Early in the film, talking to Steele’s kids about whether they fear for her safety out on the road, Ferrell asks, “Does it help that I do jujitsu? I go twice a month.”

Greenbaum, who directed 2021’s Barb & Star Go to Vista del Mar and last year’s Strays , clearly has a feel for buddy comedies and road movies. There are repeated bits involving the many different varieties of Pringles, and Will Ferrell’s petulant desire to eat at Dunkin’ Donuts. Their old SNL chums show up at a few points. They make a point of giving Lorne Michaels an uncomfortably long hug. They ask Kristen Wiig to compose a theme song for them: “Something up-tempo, jazzy and fun, but it also has to make you cry, and with a little twang.” They then spend the rest of the movie trying to get her back on the phone.

Their itinerary is designed to let Steele re-experience a world she used to know so well. At a Pacers game, she notes that she was once another member of the army of bros in the stands. She says she doesn’t know how those folks will see her now, but she also adds that she doesn’t know how she’ll see herself. Later, as Steele enters an Oklahoma bar festooned with Trump signs and Confederate flags, Ferrell waits outside, ready to pounce if the situation gets dangerous. Lo and behold, the crowded bar quickly embraces Harper Steele. They’re all toasting each other and doing shots by the time Ferrell joins them, leading to a whole host of double takes. “The joke’s on me,” Steele says afterward. “I’m not afraid of these people. I’m afraid of being myself.”

The conversations the two have on their trip are admirably frank. They talk about top and bottom surgery, misgendering, body dysmorphia, and the fears Harper had before coming out. These exchanges never feel staged, or obligatory. Steele tells Ferrell that he’s free to ask her all the things that he might otherwise be afraid to ask a trans person, and Ferell does so, clumsily but sweetly. But he also seems genuinely terrified to learn that his best friend for all these years was in so much pain that she was contemplating suicide. The film’s most powerful achievement is perhaps also its most basic: the simple sight of two friends talking, openly and gently, about all the things on their minds.

Steele admits she has a lot of privilege, and that having a good friend like Ferrell accompanying her on this trip is one of them. He attracts more attention than she does, although this does backfire at one point in Texas, when he attempts to eat a massive steak dressed as Sherlock Holmes (don’t ask) and they suddenly find dozens of cellphones creepily pointed at them. The incident also leads to news reports and torrents of grossly cruel transphobic tweets hurled in their direction.

While the film mostly presents ordinary people as accepting, tolerant, and non-judgmental, it does acknowledge the dangers that trans people regularly face. At the Pacers game, Ferrell chats with Indiana governor Eric Holcomb, who seems polite enough when the actor explains that he’s accompanying his friend on her first road-trip post-transition. Later, they look up Holcomb online and discover that the governor has signed a law banning gender-affirming care. It’s just one rebuke in a litany of ongoing cases around the country. Indeed, just three days before Park City itself cheered on Will & Harper , the Utah State Legislature passed an anti-trans bathroom law .

Will & Harper is in many senses a very conventional picture. The soundtrack accompanying them on their trip is pretty on-the-nose. “Shelter From the Storm,” “America,” “The Weight,” and “Truck Drivin’ Son of a Gun” all make appearances, as does “Luck Be a Lady Tonight” for the obligatory Vegas interlude. At their post-screening Q&A, Steele and Ferrell recalled that when they first decided to do the film, they tried to think of comic set-ups and situations in advance, before realizing that the best way to approach such a project was just to let events take their course. But the duo’s journey does have a recognizable narrative shape, leading toward a not-entirely unexpected emotional climax. The film’s familiarity may well be part of its design. It clearly wants to help change hearts and minds, and find purchase with audiences that would otherwise avoid a movie with a subject like this. Judging by the rapturous Sundance response, it has a decent shot.

On Trip to U.S., Zelensky Finds Ukraine’s Fortunes Tied to the Election

A whirlwind week of top-level meetings failed to alleviate concerns in Kyiv that a Trump presidency could lead to a dramatic shift in American policy.

Reporting from Dnipro and Pokrovsk in eastern Ukraine

When President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine set off for the United States this week on a high-stakes diplomatic mission, he had one goal above all others: rekindle a sense of urgency among his allies about Kyiv’s fortunes as the war with Russia heads into what promises to be another brutal winter.

But after wrapping up a whirlwind week capped by a meeting with former President Donald J. Trump on Friday in New York, he was set to return to Kyiv with “more questions than answers about the near future” for the Ukrainian war effort, said Mikhail Minakov, head of the Ukraine research program at the Kennan Institute in Washington.

The only thing that seemed clear was that Ukraine’s prospects for repelling Russian aggression were now firmly swept up in the maelstrom of the American presidential campaign.

Despite having worked studiously to avoid becoming embroiled in partisan politics — mentioning the importance of solidarity across party lines in nearly every public statement — Mr. Zelensky found himself caught in the hostile glare of Mr. Trump and his supporters.

Republicans called for an investigation into his trip to a Pennsylvania munitions factory, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, said Kyiv should fire its U.S. ambassador for arranging the visit, and Mr. Trump delivered a series of speeches deriding Mr. Zelensky, misstating facts about the war, echoing Kremlin talking points and saying Ukraine was already basically lost.

“Ukraine is gone,” Mr. Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, said at a North Carolina campaign event this week. “It’s not Ukraine anymore.”

“Any deal, even the worst deal, would have been better than what we have right now,” he said.

After their meeting on Friday, which lasted about an hour, the two appeared on Fox News together. Mr. Trump said only that he is looking for “a fair deal for everybody,” in terms of ending the war. “I’m sure President Putin wants it to stop,” he said .

Mr. Zelensky said “we need to do everything to pressure” Russia to stop the war and bring about “a just peace.”

While the meeting was an effort to maintain bipartisan relations, it did little to alleviate concerns in Ukraine that a Trump presidency could lead to a dramatic change in American policy.

Serhiy Sydorenko, editor at European Truth, an independent online news outlet, had provided a sobering assessment in a Facebook post before the meeting, writing that Mr. Trump’s recent comments reflected the fracturing of bipartisan support for Ukraine.

“This is the bottom of the bottom,” he wrote. “And this is an artificially, groundlessly created crisis. Yes, it will have profound negative consequences”

But others were more upbeat. “I just hope that this meeting will lower the temperature and lead to calmer and better relations,” said Yaroslav Zhelezniak, an opposition lawmaker, after Mr. Zelensky and Mr. Trump emerged from their meeting.

Mr. Trump’s earlier hostility stood in contrast to the pledges of support that Mr. Zelensky received from President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. Ms. Harris, the Democratic nominee for the White House, reaffirmed her support for Ukraine after a meeting with Mr. Zelensky on Thursday.

In a dig at Mr. Trump, she said that those who would “force Ukraine to give up large parts of its sovereign territory” are doing the Kremlin’s bidding by pushing a policy of “surrender.”

The concern about Trump overshadowed Ukraine’s frustration with the Biden administration, which Kyiv believes has been too cautious in providing support.

Mr. Zelensky has for weeks been calling for the U.S. and its western allies to allow Ukraine to use their weapons to strike deeper into Russia, saying that was the best way to reverse Russia’s battlefield momentum and to give Kyiv leverage in any future peace negotiations.

He said that he hoped Ukraine’s offensive into the Russian Kursk region, as well as its more powerful strikes inside Russia using its own, domestically produced weapons, would demonstrate to the White House that Mr. Putin’s “red lines” were scare tactics.

But the Ukrainian leader failed to get a commitment from the Biden administration that it will lift restrictions on the use of Western weapons to hit inside Russia, with the White House weighing concerns in the American intelligence community that Russian retaliation for such a move would outweigh the benefits, given the limited supplies of weapons at Kyiv’s disposal.

Mr. Zelensky also failed to make significant gains with members of the U.S. Congress, many of whom had left Washington for their home districts in advance of the Nov. 5 elections. And he was competing for attention with the escalating violence in the Mideast that has dominated diplomatic circles recently.

But Mr. Zelensky did get promises of military assistance that should help Ukraine fight through the winter, whatever happens in the November election.

President Biden’s commitment of $8 billion worth of weapons — including glide bombs, air defense missiles and an additional Patriot battery — is a desperately needed boost as Ukrainian soldiers fight grueling battles to contain Russian advances, and air defense teams struggle every night to shield its already shattered energy grid from further bombardment.

Still, Mr. Minakov, from the Kennan Institute, said that the trip likely left the military disappointed and Mr. Zelensky’s domestic political opponents emboldened, by seeing his standing on the world stage weakened.

Members of Mr. Zelensky’s party were instructed not to speak to the media, Ukrainian lawmakers said, a reflection of the delicate diplomatic moment and the his office’s desire to keep tight control over information.

It was not just Mr. Trump who cast a shadow over Mr. Zelensky’s visit.

President Vladimir V. Putin sought to influence the diplomatic negotiations from the Kremlin by announcing an updated nuclear doctrine that authorized the use of nuclear weapons against nonnuclear states that attack Russia when they are supported by nuclear powers. The Kremlin later acknowledged Mr. Putin’s statements were referring to the war with Ukraine, which he has long claimed was the West’s way of fighting a proxy war against Russia.

Ukrainians were largely dismissive of the threats.

Andriy Yermak, Mr. Zelensky’s chief of staff, said the announcement demonstrated that Russia “no longer has anything other than nuclear blackmail to intimidate the world.”

As Ukraine’s fate is discussed and debated among international leaders, Ukrainian soldiers are engaged in some of the most intense battles of the war, with Russian soldiers launching fierce assaults across the front.

The soldiers are keenly aware of how political decisions in Washington reverberate to the battlefield, with many still bitter over the months of delays before a $61 billion military assistance package was finally approved in April.

Oleksandr, a senior commander for the 68th Jaeger Brigade, said that what was true on the front line was equally true in the halls of power.

“When Russians get a strong pushback, they don’t continue fighting actively — this applies both to politics and direct combat,” the commander said, asking that only his first name be used in accordance with military protocol

But he worried that the West still can’t shake the idea that “Russia is powerful and unbeatable.”

“In my firm opinion, the West is very afraid that Putin might use nuclear weapons, that he might do something drastic,” he said during an interview in Pokrovsk in eastern Ukraine.

The Russians have advanced to within a few miles of the city, which is steadily being destroyed.

“If you look at us Ukrainians, what worse could happen to us now than what Putin has already done in the last two and a half years?”

Whatever politicians in Washington and European capitals decide, he said, he will not stop fighting as long as Russians remain on Ukrainian land.

“Even if we don’t get any supplies, I can confidently say that for myself and my subordinates, 99 percent of us will keep fighting,” he said. “As guerrillas, not guerrillas — either way, we will find ways to keep going.”
