Wowza! This new New York-based cruise ship is bigger than the city's biggest hotel

Gene Sloan

What's the biggest hotel in New York City?

If you guessed the famously massive New York Marriott Marquis near Times Square, with its 1,971 rooms, you would have been right ... on Wednesday.

But as of Thursday, there's a new giant in town, albeit one that you won't be able to access every day. It'll be coming and going.

For more cruise news, guides and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter

It's the MSC Meraviglia, the first cruise ship from fast-growing MSC Cruises to be based in in the Big Apple. One of the biggest cruise ships in the world, it has a whopping 2,224 rooms — edging out the New York Marriott Marquis' room count by a comfortable margin.

We know MSC Meraviglia is not a "hotel" in the strictest definition. But cruise ships essentially are just hotels that float. When MSC Meraviglia is docked at its new home base in New York City, something that will happen every few days year-round, it'll be hard to argue it's not the biggest lodging establishment in the Five Boroughs.

Eighteen decks high and more than 1,000 feet long, MSC Meraviglia can hold about 5,700 passengers with every berth filled, and it sails with 1,500-plus crew members. That means that, on any given day, it could have more than 7,000 people on board.

The arrival of MSC Meraviglia in New York City marks a significant milestone for MSC Cruises, a Europe-based brand that, until now, has only offered sailings in North America out of the Port of Miami and Port Canaveral . MSC Meraviglia has been based out of Port Canaveral until now.

The arrival comes as the battle for cruisers in the New York area heats up, with rival lines such as Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line deploying some of the newest and biggest ships to the market.

Related: New Norwegian Prima to sail from New York, Texas and Florida

MSC Meraviglia will depart Saturday on its first sailing from New York — a seven-night voyage to Florida and the Bahamas. It'll then run a year-round schedule of six- to 11-night voyages to the Caribbean, Bermuda, New England and Canada.

When it's in New York, the ship will dock at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, which is in the Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn.

The new MSC Cruises sailings out of New York will include:

  • Seven- and eight-night voyages to the Bahamian port of Nassau and Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, the line's private island in the Bahamas.
  • Six-night trips to Bermuda that feature three days docked at King's Wharf.
  • Ten and 11-night sailings to New England and Canada that bring calls at Boston; Portland, Maine; Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island; Halifax and Sydney, Nova Scotia; and Saint John, New Brunswick. The 11-night itinerary also includes a stop at Newport, Rhode Island.

MSC Cruises is joining Royal Caribbean and Norwegian in basing ships in the New York area year-round for sailings to the above regions. Other lines that sail regularly out of New York-area ports on a seasonal basis include Carnival Cruise Line , Disney Cruise Line and Celebrity Cruises . Cunard Line also has a major presence in New York City with regular transatlantic sailings from New York to the United Kingdom.

MSC Cruises has been rapidly building its footprint in North America in an effort to woo more Americans. In 2017, MSC Cruises only had a single vessel based in North America. It now has two vessels based in Miami, one based in Port Canaveral and one based in New York.

All of the North America-based ships are marketed heavily to Americans.

Founded in 1989 in Naples, Italy, and now based in Switzerland, MSC Cruises in recent years has been building big, resort-like vessels that compete with the biggest ships from the likes of Royal Caribbean and Norwegian. It currently operates seven of the 20 biggest cruise ships in the world.

The line is also in the midst of building the largest cruise terminal in North America, at PortMiami. It'll be able to accommodate three of the line's largest ships at once.

Note that MSC Meraviglia isn't the first cruise ship with more rooms than the New York Marriott Marquis to dock in New York City. On days when Norwegian's Norwegian Epic is in town, for instance — something that will happen just once this year — it surpasses the New York Marriott Marquis in size. Norwegian Epic has about 2,100 rooms.

In addition, MSC Meraviglia will be eclipsed in size among cruise ships sailing out of the New York area on May 7 when Royal Caribbean's giant Oasis of the Seas returns to the city for a short-term series of sailings through October. The giant ship, which has more than 2,700 rooms, began sailing seasonally out of New York in 2021 .

MSC Names New Cruise Ship in New York City

  • December 8, 2022

MSC Seascape Naming

MSC Cruises has welcomed the MSC Seascape to its fleet as its 21st ship with the line’s newest ship officially named at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal in New York City on Wednesday evening.

The location was chosen in recognition of the addition of New York as a new homeport in April 2023 for MSC Cruises to provide more choice of North American embarkation ports and itineraries for the line’s guests from both North America and the rest of the world, the company said.

The event was attended by more than 3,000 guests including VIPs, key travel partners and global media as well as top management from the entire Cruise Division of the company and its parent MSC Group.

One of the highlights of the traditional maritime ceremony was a stunning performance from international singer-songwriter Matteo Bocelli, following his performance last month at the naming ceremony of MSC World Europa in Doha, Qatar.

Godmother of the MSC Cruises fleet and international movie icon Sophia Loren blessed the ship virtually whilst Alexa Aponte-Vago, daughter of MSC Group’s founder and executive chairman Gianluigi Aponte, performed the traditional cutting of the ribbon to officially name the ship.

Loren shared her good luck wishes for the new ship and said: “One of the highlights of the past 20 years has been to officiate the christening of MSC Cruises fleet not only because the Apontes have become like family to me but also because MSC has always occupied a special place in my heart. Let me bless the MSC Seascape, her great crew and all her passengers.”

Following the ceremony, the guests enjoyed a gourmet gala dinner and standout performance by international Grammy Award winner singer and songwriter Ne-Yo.

Find the best cruise for you

Featured cruise deals, cruising guide, why take a cruise vacation.

If you have a place on your bucket list, chances are, a cruise will get you there – provided the destination is along a coastline or inland waterway. Cruises cover the world, taking millions of passengers each year to regions such as the Caribbean, the Bahamas, Alaska, Europe, the Mediterranean and even Antarctica. Cruising offers a tremendous value, with trips that include your lodging, meals and entertainment – all rolled into one. Some luxury cruise lines even offer fully inclusive vacations, which cover drinks and tours ashore. And best of all, cruising means seeing the world conveniently after unpacking only once.

Cruises also provide a wonderful option for families, with many ships offering things like waterslides, mini-golf courses and fun clubs for kids, tweens and teens. While most are free, nursery programs can cost extra. Planning is easy: Pick your destination and the right ship (and line) for your travel style. The cruise line makes it simple, offering packages to help you save on extras like alcohol, shore tours or even airfare.

Travelers say they choose to cruise because cruising often costs less per night when compared with land vacations at a hotel, where they'll have to book -- and pay for -- every extra.

What are Tips for Finding Cheap Cruises?

If you're a flexible traveler, you'll have a better chance of finding cheap cruises. Take a cruise that doesn't sail over the summer or holidays, when prices are highest. Book an inside cabin, or take your chances with a "guarantee cabin," ideal for passengers who aren't picky about their stateroom location but really want the lowest price available. Book cabins on lower decks, which often come with lower prices than those rooms on higher floors – that is staterooms over suites.

Cruise brands such as Carnival Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International offer rates that might drop as low as $75 per person per night -- and sometimes even lower.

If you want a real bargain, consider a transatlantic or repositioning cruise. These cruises are one-way or open-jaw trips, that start in one port and finish at another. You can score a deal sailing from Florida to Europe, for example, or even from New York to Florida. Just be aware, you'll probably have to pay a bit more for airfare to return.

What are Tips to Finding Last-Minute Cruise Deals?

While being flexible date wise will always get you the best last-minute cruise deals, it's particularly helpful if you live near a cruise port and can quickly drive there. That way you'll probably be able to jump on those deals that might pop up just a week or two before the ship is scheduled to sail.

Or if you don't have flexibility with either departure dates or embarkation locations, be willing to compromise on exact destinations. This will allow you to find a wider range of last-minute deals traveling to locations in their off-season or so-called shoulder season.

Do plenty of research and know what your ideal cruise is and costs on average, so both are already on your radar. When you see it drop, pounce! (Many cruise lines update pricing several times per day, so preparation is crucial.)

Best cruises in 2024

There's truly a cruise style and ship for everyone, and that has never been more the case than in 2024, as vessels continue to come in an array of sizes – from riverboats and expedition vessels to the largest-ever mega ships. And it's not an exaggeration to say some are loaded with so many activities that you couldn't possibly enjoy them all in a single sailing.

Families will find plenty of options and activities onboard big ships, which have transformed cruising, making the vessels as exciting as the destinations themselves. The Caribbean is always a great option for families, offering lots of sunshine, great beaches and culture. Alaska, famous for its incredible vistas and abundant wildlife, is also a solid family cruise option. Consider cruise brands such as Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, Norwegian Cruise Line, Disney Cruise Line, MSC Cruises and even Celebrity Cruises and Holland America Line for a great multi-generational voyage.

Or on the smaller side, by comparison, river cruising remains a hot ticket item this year, with exciting routes that send eager guests down the Danube or Rhine rivers in Europe or to lesser-frequented locations, like the Mekong River in Cambodia or Vietnam, or soon the Magdalena River in Colombia. Popular river cruises embark in timeless cities like Amsterdam, Budapest and Lisbon. River cruise lines to consider encompass Viking, AmaWaterways, Avalon Waterways, Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, Emerald Cruises, Tauck, Uniworld Boutique River Cruises and Riverside Luxury Cruises, as well as American Cruise Lines for a domestic alternative.

If you're an adventurer at heart, an expedition cruise might be best for you. These voyages, often onboard small ships (only a few hundred passengers tops), offer an intimate experience that brings passengers right up next to glaciers, whales, penguins and iguanas. Ships visit tiny spots all over the world – from pole to pole – including the Arctic, Alaska, Australia, Greenland, the Galapagos and, of course, Antarctica. Passengers will spend their time zodiacing, kayaking, hiking, biking and exploring with expert guides and knowledgeable naturalists. Expedition travelers love cruise lines such as Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic, UnCruise Adventures, Silversea, HX (formerly Hurtigruten Expeditions), Ponant and Quark Expeditions, as well as an ever-expanding list that now even extends to Seabourn and Viking.

But for the most decadent form of travel, luxury cruises offer all-inclusive experiences onboard small to median-sized ships (usually under a thousand passengers) with perks like butlers, high-end amenities and personalized, intuitive service, not to mention the finest dining at sea. Ships often feature luxury touches like marble and crystal decor, intimate spaces and beautiful spas. Because luxury ships tend to be on the smaller size, they can often reach off-the-beaten-path destinations bigger ships simply cannot access -- ports like St. Tropez or Guadeloupe. If you're looking for a luxury cruise, consider Crystal, Seabourn, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Silversea, Explora Journeys, Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection and upcoming Four Seasons Yachts.

European cruise line Marella not coming back for second year at Port Canaveral

msc cruise ship new york

Marella Cruises , a European cruise line that sailed out of Port Canaveral during 2023, is not coming back this year, port officials say.

The cruise line was unique for the port. It sailed the Marella Discovery out of Port Canaveral for six months in 2023. But U.S. residents could not book a sailing on the ship. The sailings were just for people who booked a flight from Europe to Melbourne Orlando International Airport on an affiliated airline, TUI Airways. Both Marella and TUI Airways are part of the TUI Group, a major international travel company.

Port Canaveral CEO John Murray said the Marella Discovery was scheduled to sail only during 2023 out of Port Canaveral before switching to other itineraries. He said there were no issues between the port and the cruise line that triggered Marella to not sail from Port Canaveral this year.

More on Marella Discovery: 5 things to know about new Port Canaveral cruise ship, including why locals can't sail

The Marella Discovery had a total of 28 sailings out of Port Canaveral from May to November 2023, with a total of 85,533 passengers getting on or off the ship. Most of the sailings were seven nights in duration.

There were various itineraries from Port Canaveral. A typical one was called "American Dream," with stops in Charleston, South Carolina; New York City; and Freeport, Bahamas.

TUI's business model is to sell full-scale travel packages. So the cruise was part of a package that includes a flight from a United Kingdom airport to Melbourne Orlando International Airport. Some packages had an option to add a hotel stay in Florida.

The Marella Discovery currently is sailing seven-night "Ottoman Odyssey" cruises in the Eastern Mediterranean, sailing out of Marmaris, Turkey.

Marella Cruises is a relatively small cruise line, with five ships in operation.

The Marella Discovery also is relatively small, compared with some of the megaships based at Port Canaveral. The Discovery has 915 cabins; a double-occupancy capacity of 1,830 passengers; and a full capacity of 2,076 passengers. It is 866 feet long and has a gross tonnage of 69,130 tons.

It has sailed under various names over the years. It initially sailed for Royal Caribbean International as the Splendour of the Seas, starting in 1996. The ship was refurbished in 2016, after being acquired by TUI.

Port's cruise business booming

Despite not having a Marella ship in port this year, Port Canaveral's cruise business is going gangbusters.

For the first seven months of the current budget year (October 2023 through April 2024), the port's total cruise revenue, including from cruise passenger parking, is $92.43 million, which is $2.12 million above budget. During that time, there have been 553 cruise ship calls and 4.52 million multiday passengers getting on or off those ships.

Port Canaveral is the world's second-busiest cruise port. Five cruise lines base ships at Port Canaveral — Carnival, Disney, MSC, Norwegian and Royal Caribbean. Celebrity and Princess will add ships to the Port Canaveral lineup later this year.

A total of 21 multiday cruise ships will be based at Port Canaveral during at least part of this year.

TUI continues to fly to Melbourne

Despite not having a Marella ship at Port Canaveral, TUI is continuing its flights into and out of Melbourne Orlando International Airport for a third straight year in 2024.

The airport reported that a total of 242,542 passengers got on or off international flights in Melbourne in 2022, and 231,472 did so in 2023. The airport does not report passenger totals by airline, but airport officials said the vast majority of those were TUI passengers.

TUI's Melbourne service originates from English cities of Birmingham, London (London-Gatwick airport), Manchester and Newcastle, along with Belfast, Northern Ireland, and Glasgow, Scotland. This year's TUI flights started March 18, and will run through Oct. 26.

In 2025, TUI will add a new departure city for its flights to Melbourne — Dublin, Ireland.

The international travel giant flies U.K. travelers to U.S. destinations aboard Boeing 787 Dreamliners via vacation packages. The airline does not offer tickets for Melbourne passengers to fly to Europe.
