Morocco Sees Historic Tourism Revenue Increase in 2023

morocco tourism revenue 2023

Morocco’s tourism industry has experienced a remarkable upswing in 2023, with the country’s official Tourism Observatory reporting a 38% increase in overnight stays in classified tourist accommodation facilities during the first eleven months of the year, compared to the same period in 2022. The total number of overnight stays reached an impressive 72 million nights, a significant leap from the 52 million nights recorded in the same timeframe last year. Additionally, the revenue from foreign travel, primarily generated by non-resident tourists in Morocco, surged by 16%, culminating in a striking 97 billion Dirhams. This boost in tourism revenue highlights the sector’s robust recovery and significant contribution to the Moroccan economy. The Ministry of Tourism anticipates that the number of tourists arriving in Morocco will surpass 14 million in 2023, marking a 25% increase from the previous year.

This expectation aligns with the country’s strategic efforts to revitalize its tourism sector, which is a crucial component of the national economy, accounting for approximately 10% of Morocco’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This positive trend in Morocco’s tourism industry signifies a rebound from the challenges posed by global events in recent years, reflecting the country’s appeal as a top travel destination and its ongoing commitment to enhancing its tourism infrastructure and offerings.

Morocco’s Tourism Revenues Soar to Nearly $9 Billion Driven by Record Visitor Numbers

Barat

Rabat – Morocco experienced tidal wave of visitors in 2023, with tourism revenue hitting new heights of MAD 88.5 billion ($8.96 billion) in the first 10 months of the year. Propelled by the highest numbers of international arrivals ever recorded, the staggering revenue reflects a thriving rebound taking Morocco’s tourism sector into overdrive.

According to statistics from Morocco’s Directorate of Studies and Financial Forecasts (DEPF), tourism earnings from January to October 2023 marked a robust 20.7% annual increase over the previous year. Remarkably, the figures also represent a 32% surge compared to pre-pandemic revenue in 2019 – suggesting Morocco’s tourism appeal is greater than ever. The uptick is further evidenced in airport arrivals, which reached the unprecedented milestone of 13.2 million visitors by the end of November alone, per DEPF data. Morocco anticipates closing out 2023 with a total 15 million arrivals, driven partially by Moroccans living abroad.

In October, tourism revenue saw particular acceleration, spiking 22.1% compared to 2019 levels. Morocco’s Tourism Minister Fatim-Zahra Ammor attributed the continuous growth to the Kingdom optimizing promotion of its cultural heritage and natural attractions.

Niche tourism segments like luxury desert excursions or surfing also helped Morocco diversify its offerings beyond classic staples like Marrakesh and the Atlas Mountains. “We adopted a strategy based on promoting cultural heritage and natural resources,” Ammor explained. “We also worked to develop promising niches.”

As visitor confidence and numbers continue swelling, Morocco is actively developing infrastructure upgrades like new hotel properties and airport expansions to meet demand. Officials are also focused on ensuring tourism sustainability through local job creation, environmental protections, and visitor dispersion beyond marquee cities.

With Northern Africa’s top destination bustling at the seams and revenue soaring, no doubt intrepid travelers worldwide will soon be craving their own taste of Morocco’s irresistible cultural and scenic splendors.

Morocco’s Tourism Triumph: Record-Breaking Numbers in 2023

morocco

Fatima Zahra Ammor,, minister of tourism in Morocco

In 2023, Morocco achieved a remarkable milestone in its tourism sector, welcoming a record-breaking 14.5 million visitors, marking a substantial 34% increase from the previous year. This surge also represented a significant 12% rise compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019.

Notably, Moroccans Living Abroad made up 51% of these arrivals, indicating a noteworthy 27% growth from the previous year. Concurrently, there was a notable 41% increase in foreign tourists compared to 2022, accounting for 49% of the overall arrivals and marking a three-point gain from the preceding year.

Fatim-Zahra Ammor, the Minister of Tourism, expressed her satisfaction with these achievements, stating that despite the challenges posed by the Al Haouz earthquake, the Kingdom exceeded the 12 million visitor mark in 2023. She emphasized that these accomplishments underscore the success of efforts to promote and diversify Morocco’s source markets.

The tourism sector’s resilience is particularly commendable given the adverse impact of the Al Haouz earthquake on the Marrakech region in September of the previous year. Nevertheless, Ammor affirmed that this is just the beginning, with Morocco setting ambitious targets for the future.

The Kingdom aims to achieve 17.5 million visitors by 2026 by introducing new airline routes, with aspirations to reach 26 million by 2030 when it co-hosts the World Cup with Spain and Portugal.

The achievement of 14.5 million tourists significantly surpasses the initial target outlined in the Ministry’s Tourism Roadmap 2023-2026, which aimed for 13.5 million visitors. This success reflects Morocco’s resilience under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and underscores the collective dedication of the government and industry stakeholders.

Furthermore, the tourism profits climbed to MAD 97.4 billion ($9.8 billion) by the end of November last year, representing a noteworthy 15.8% increase from the previous year. Ammor emphasized that this achievement goes beyond mere numbers; it symbolizes Morocco’s resilience and determination to thrive in the face of challenges.

Morocco hails record tourist numbers for 2023

Tourists stroll through Jemma el Fna Square in Marrakech just days after an earthquake struck Morocco

  • 34% increase on 2022
  • ‘Surpassed expectations’
  • Tourist revenue $9.6bn

Morocco welcomed a record-breaking 14.5 million tourists in 2023, despite a devastating earthquake that rocked the country.

The number of inbound tourists was up 34 percent on 2022 and an increase of 12 percent on pre-pandemic 2019 levels.

December alone had 1.3 million tourist arrivals, despite a tough economic climate and turbulent geopolitical times.

  • Ryanair to begin domestic flights in Morocco in 2024
  • Saudi-Morocco fund to drive investments – and closer ties
  • Morocco joins Mena industrial partnership

The kingdom’s Ministry of Tourism, Handicrafts and Social and Solidarity Economy said in a statement that the figures had “surpassed expectations”.

Half of all arrivals were Moroccans living abroad, the Ministry said.

The country suffered an earthquake in September near the town of Ighil and the Oukaïmeden ski resort in the Atlas Mountains, which killed more than 3,000 people and destroyed infrastructure.

Revenues from tourism totalled $9.8 billion from January to November in 2023, up 15.8 percent year on year, according to data from the Office des Changes, the Moroccan foreign exchange regulator.

In March last year Morocco announced a $580 million plan to boost the tourism sector, to attract 17.5 million tourists by 2026, with the launch of new airline routes.

It hopes to increase that number to 26 million by 2030, when the country co-hosts the World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal.

The Irish low-cost carrier Ryanair’s summer programme includes more than 1,100 weekly flights on 175 routes in the North African country, including 35 new routes, 24 international and 11 domestic.

The latest World Bank report predicted that Morocco’s real GDP growth would be 3.1 percent in 2024, 3.3 percent in 2025 and 3.5 percent in 2026, as domestic demand gradually recovers from recent shocks.

Morocco’s Tourism Reports $10.5 Billion revenue in 2023

Image

Morocco announced that the country received 14.5 million tourists in 2023, resulting in a tourism revenue surge of MAD 104.6 ($10.5 billion), an increase of 34 percent compared with 2022, the kingdom’s Ministry of Tourism, Handicrafts and Social and Solidarity Economy said recently.

The office stated in a report released recently that, in comparison to 2022, tourism-related income in Morocco increased by 11.7%, or around MAD 11 billion ($1 billion).

The Ministry of Tourism reported that Morocco received 14.5 million tourists in 2023—a 34% increase over 2022—which resulted in the record-breaking tourism profits. This unprecedented figure represents a 12% increase over the pre-pandemic baseline year of 2019.

Moroccans living abroad accounted for 51% of the total number of arrivals, with a growth of 27% compared to 2022. Additionally, foreign tourists made up 49% of arrivals, recording an increase of 3% compared to 2022.

According to the Ministry, this updated estimate for the number of visitors greatly surpasses the baseline goal established for this year as part of the 2023–26 tourism program.

This plan predicted that 13.5 million tourists would arrive, and the actual number was one million more than anticipated.

The Migration and Development Brief published by the World Bank has indicated that in 2023, Morocco ranked second among the major beneficiaries of remittances in the Middle East and North Africa.

With $28.3 billion, Egypt was the top-ranked country in the area, followed by Lebanon and Jordan.

Morocco’s Record Tourism Numbers Help Reduce Trade Decifit

Ahmed Eljechtimi, Reuters

February 4th, 2024 at 8:47 AM EST

The massive earthquake that struck Morocco last September didn't stunt its tourism boom, welcome news for the country's economy.

Rashaad Jorden

Morocco’s annual trade deficit contracted by 7.3% to 286 billion dirhams ($28.6 billion) in 2023, helped by a drop in energy imports and higher tourism revenue , the foreign exchange regulator said in a monthly report.

Imports fell 2.5% from a year earlier to 715 billion dirhams, while exports increased by 0.2% to 429 billion dirhams, the regulator said, adding that remittances from Moroccans abroad and automotive industry exports also helped to improve the trade deficit.

Morocco’s energy imports dropped 20.4% to 122 billion dirhams after a drop both in demand and prices in the international market.

Wheat imports stood at 19.3 billion dirhams, down 25.3%, while ammoniac imports – key for fertiliser production – fell by 58% to 8.8 billion dirhams.

Morocco, which has the world’s largest phosphate reserves, reported a 34% decrease in exports of the mineral and its derivatives, including fertilisers, to 76 billion dirhams.

Home to Stellantis and Renault production plants, Morocco reported a more than 27% gain in automotive sector exports to a record 141 billion dirhams.

Tourism revenue also scaled new peaks , jumping 11.7% to 104 billion dirhams from a record 14.5 million visitors to the country last year.

Key to Morocco’s inflow of hard currency, remittances from Moroccans abroad reached a record 115 billion dirhams, up 4% from 2022.

Morocco's tourism sector sets new records in 2023, report

M orocco welcomed a record-breaking 14.5 million tourists in 2023, representing a 34% increase compared to 2019 pre-pandemic levels, according to a report by the Thematic Group for the Evaluation of Public Policies in the Tourism Sector of the House of Councilors.

This influx of visitors generated MAD 105 billion (approximately $10.5 billion) in tourism revenue, marking a 12% increase from 2022.

The report further highlights the notable growth in overnight stays at classified accommodation establishments, reaching 25.6 million in 2023. This translates to a 35% increase compared to 2022 and a 1.5% rise from 2019.

The positive trend continues into 2024, with over 5.9 million tourists arriving by the end of May, reflecting a 772,000 increase compared to the same period in 2023.

This performance is attributed to the implementation of the government’s ambitious tourism roadmap for 2023-2026, backed by an unprecedented financial commitment of MAD 6.1 billion.

The strategy aims to attract 17.5 million tourists by 2026, create 200,000 new jobs, boost tourism revenue to MAD 120 billion, and solidify tourism’s position as a cornerstone of the national economy.

The roadmap centers on a revamped tourism offering tailored to the customer experience, encompassing nine thematic sectors: city tourism, nature and adventure tourism, ocean and waves tourism, business tourism, desert and oases tourism, beach and sun tourism, cultural routes, and domestic tourism.

To achieve these goals, the government is implementing a comprehensive strategy that includes stimulating air transport through the establishment of a collaboration agreement with Royal Air Maroc (RAM) to quadruple RAM’s fleet from 50 to 200 aircraft by 2037.

Morocco has also launched 24 new international routes from eight key source markets, while 11 new domestic air routes have been opened. Casablanca’s Mohammed V International Airport is being positioned as a major hub for connecting to international destinations.

The country has also been promoting domestic tourism through various initiatives, including the establishment of a national platform for domestic tourism and the development of targeted marketing campaigns.
