Milky Chance on Tour

Many dreams of the German musician folk usually fall flat at the starting line, if you were to look at how most fair against their other countrymen in history. You have that metal wall of Rammstein that sticks in front of most onlookers living outside of their borders, oh and there's Kraftwerk. Who would have imagined a mainstream global success story for two young, German men from a fairly small industrial town named Kassel having a hefty number of Australians 14,000 kilometers away booking tickets to see them perform live every time they come to town. It's a story of two unlikely lads, but it's also one of two incredibly talented lads that created something different that separates them from any other popular artists you know.

Milky Chance are Philipp Dausch and Clemens Rehbein. They met at school, growing-up listening to Bob Marley, Hendrix & Red Hot Chili Peppers to name but a few. Getting together to make music in the early days was less about plotting global success, it was instead more about having fun. One of their first songs, however, quickly changed things - It was Stolen Dance. More specifically it was a unique sounding folktronica song that spanned across most commercial & alternative radio playlists across the globe. That moment they uploaded it to Youtube was about six years ago, but the fact it's one of the most Shazamed songs of all time tells you all you need to know.

Like a Darwinian success story, Milky Chance quickly adapted to their new found surroundings & pulled together an album & was touring the world within months. That debut album, Sadnecessary, that boasts other successful singles Down By The River & Flashed Junk Mind, went on to become a multi-platinum record in various countries that saw this German duo play on US late night shows like Fallon, Kimmel & O'Brien and garner every major worldwide press outlet that had an interest in music.

Fast-forward a few years to 2017 & the band launched their second album Blossom. This album faced the oh-so-common question of whether to keep to what brought success or develop into something that changed with the winds of the current chart trends. The band chose to hold strong to what made them so popular, but adding far more layers in quality learned on the road. Lead singles Cocoon & Doing Good embodied their approach and it was a hugely successful album, amassing hundreds of millions of plays across streaming platforms, and more Gold & Platinum records came tumbling in worldwide, and they went on to play to 241 shows across 41 countries.

After the success of Sadnecessary and Blossom, their third album Mind the Moon is nothing less than the distillation of their songwriting spirit. While they started off with a smooth, minimalist sound, their second album added distinguished layers that any muso could appreciate. Mind the Moon succeeds in embodying this paradox and sees Dausch and Rehbein achieve the transition from a fairytale pop phenomenon to the truly gifted songwriters that they've always been. The new tracks are an easy listen with catchy melodies and a laid-back vibe – but there is depth that hooks the listener beyond the first impression. How much depth can a light-hearted pop song actually have? "Mind the Moon" gives you the answer. Like its forerunner "Blossom," the album was produced with Tobias Kuhn.

Where do Milky Chance fit in the future, you may ask, as they embark on their third album. The answer is fairly simple; This album will see them continue to be a singular proposition in a world fall of "The Next (insert name here)." If that all sounds a bit grandiose, just listen to new song The Game for evidence. The track epitomizes this sound, with a unique and self-evident blend of reggae, chillout and rock. The sounds come together so naturally, as if it's never been any other way. A look at the featured artists on the album alone gives you an idea of the breadth of genres it encompasses. The track "Fallen" was written in London with the British artist Elderbrook, and pop-gospel fusion track "Eden's House" features the South African choir Ladysmith Black Mambazo – a group Dausch and Rehbein have admired since their school years.

Their collaboration with Tash Sultana was no less of a dream come true. The Australian-Maltese singer-songwriter is currently causing a major stir in the world of music, and her vocals on the first single Daydreaming add a truly unique element to the Milky Chance sound. And last but not least, there's Témé Tan, a Belgian artist with Congolese roots. Both Témé Tan and Tash Sultana have previously shared line-ups with Milky Chance on tour, and can now be heard performing on their latest album. Rush, recorded with Témé Tan, will also feature on the album.

Dausch and Rehbein split the recording between their own studio – which they built and decked out in Kassel, so they could focus on the music, far from all the hype – and studios around the world. The recording sessions took place in locations ranging from Australia to Italy to Norway. The latter was situated right by the water, just a few meters from the nearest fjord. The ever-present ocean is a constant theme that runs through the new album, reflected in lyrics like "Thoughts just keep on drowning in my blue mind" (Rush) and "The sea is on the low tide/trouble on the inside" (Oh Mama), and even in the title of the album itself, which venerates the moon and its incredible power to control the tie. A mysterious, ever-present force that is as distant as it is close by.

Agin and again and again.

I’ve seen milky chance four times — the first time was at Music Midtown, by accident, and it was one of the most electric performance I had ever seen live. Every person was entranced and it (probs) had nothing to do with how well or how many songs they knew. It was about two people and their band that’s totally, completely engulfed in their own sound. After that I saw them at an indoor concert, an album release party, and then an outdoor amphitheater and they’re honestly magic — somehow the outside air makes them sound better while they’ve turned every single indoor venue into an electric field basically. They truly make me happy. And I’ve never seen anyone less than amazed after seeing them live. I hope you get to experience it too :)

Great great show!!

Saw them at Pier 17 in NYC and man…what a way that was to kick off mine and my boyfriends Summer of 2023. I wish they played more songs from all their albums that day. They deserve and need to be the headline of a show. Their own show!!! I’ll go see them again and again!!!!

Amazing! WY better live than the album. Got the whole crowd moving. Could have had a better venue with floor space. First big concert I’ve taken my two boys to and they loved it

Such a great concert. The energy was great and the music was amazing.

Incredible show.

Wow, what a show! Had everyone going crazy. It was loud, bright, high energy. Everything you want in a concert.

Really good show!

Great performance, great sound, all around a good time!

Pretty good

Young the Giant wasn’t there which was a huge bummer. Milky Chance had solid music quality and cool lights / dancing. The main issue was that the opener Mallory Merk had 10 or so very slow and sad songs, which made it hard to jump into the fun high energy Milky Chance vibes. Not much crowd engagement and no band intros. Overall not bad but not as good as I was expecting. Would still recommend checking them out though

Great but could have been better

Wrong venue for the type of event - the band and acoustics were amazing but the venue didn’t facilitate enjoying the music to its fullest…trying to dance in a tight space took away from the experience. The concession stands being closed after the show began was also a dampener

Just amazing musicians and performers! You’ll dance the whole night!

Best experience ever

Amazing venue, amazing concert… one of the best concerts I’ve ever seen live. They were phenomenal. Best experience ever 🔥

Ouuffff!! The milky boys never fail to deliver. Seriously, if you're looking to have a good time, you gotta see them live. Such great performances and they are very engaged with the audience. Also, props to them for their initiative in trying to become more sustainable/eco-friendly. Really impressed by their transparency on that.

Would really like to see you Clemens in Atl. When you do arrive I'll be there. I was in a grocery store in Macon Ga. Looking for flowers. I hear mellow almost New Orleans sit back reserve sound. This was just a few years ago. I later looked up the song noticed he was simply sitting ' singing and stringing to a plant. That's when I became an instant Milky Chance fan. I love his work. That's pretty much all I need to say.

It was the best concert I’ve ever been to. Left me speechless. The atmosphere was so warm and left me only good emotions. I would definitely like to see them again and again. They just have this amazing energy that I haven’t seen in any group so far. Love their music and I can’t wait for them to come back to Lithuania, hope this time to Kaunas, and give us the same energy that they gave in Vilnius. :)

Concert Review: Young the Giant - Milky Chance

The Young the Giants 2023 world tour has provided an extraordinary platform for every artist on the lineup, allowing them to embrace their individuality and showcase their remarkable personal and musical evolutions. With the dynamic contributions of both Milky Chance and Talk , the artists delivered an exhilarating and introspective performance that left Bridgeport attendees captivated and enthralled, despite the initial weather issues that plagued the show.

milky chance world tour

As can happen with outdoor venues, weather can prove to be unpredictable. The concert was originally supposed to take place a week before, however, due to smoke from the recent Canadian wildfires looming in the air, it was clear the show needed to be postponed. Despite the shift in dates, the amphitheater filled with fans excited for the thrilling performances to come.

Talk, as an opening act, delivered a captivating performance that showcased his exceptional musical talents and charismatic stage presence. With an operatic yet deep voice, he effortlessly conveyed the emotional depth of his lyrics. Throughout the set, he maintained a casual and laid-back demeanor, connecting with the audience through numerous fun quips which constantly interrupted his singing. From discussing what the audience was eating, to his love for Mystic, Connecticut, to reinforcing why he loves rock & roll, Talk displayed his colorful and quirky personality. His engagement with fans was remarkable, as it helped create a warm and inclusive atmosphere. Despite the weight of certain songs, Talk’s fun and vibrant demeanor added a unique charm to the performance, leaving the audience thoroughly entertained and eagerly anticipating the next act, Milky Chance.

For Milky Chance, this show was a testament to their musical evolution, seamlessly blending their signature acoustic indie sound with an avant-garde, sci-fi-inspired twist. While they explored new sonic territories with their latest album, “Living In A Haze,” they included remixed elements of psychedelic rock, house, and club beats, which skillfully maintained the essence of their earlier work. Many of the beats felt reminiscent of that one would find in a club back in their home country of Germany. The band's performance was marked by their deep connection with the audience, constantly inviting them to participate in call-and-response moments that added an interactive and engaging dimension to the show. If anything was uniting the band and their audience that night, it was their lead singer, Clemens Rehbein, whose silly dance moves mid-song got the audience to match the pace of his on-beat footwork. They later invited fans to bring their excited energy over to the merch table to the side of the stage for an impromptu meet-and-greet, a very kind gesture by the band. Moments like that are what remind artists why sharing their art and talent is so necessary. It was a night where the boundaries of the genre were pushed, and the audience was taken on a captivating, welcoming journey through Milky Chance's musical evolution.

milky chance world tour

Fans were especially eager in anticipating the headliner of the night, Young the Giant, who was known for igniting the atmosphere from the stage with their electrifying presence. Known for their infectious blend of alternative rock and indie pop, the band has solidified their place in the music industry with their mesmerizing melodies, introspective lyrics, and the charismatic vocals of lead singer Sameer Gadhia. With a repertoire of hits that have garnered widespread acclaim, Young the Giant embarked on a sonic journey that would leave a lasting impression on the concert attendees.

The first thing I noticed as the lights rose from black was how stunning the set dressing was for the stage. Decorated with bright orange streamers alongside set backgrounds with intricate, bold designs lit by the largely blue and reddish orange lighting, the set dressing truly brought the audience into Gadhia’s world for their opening track, “American Bollywood.”

milky chance world tour

A number of the tracks played on this tour derive from their latest album by the same name which paints an especially vulnerable and honest perspective about life as a first-generation Indian-American. In an Instagram post announcing the release of the album, Sameer writes, “So much of me is imprinted into this music; so much of myself and my identity has fused with this project that it’s hard to know where I end and American Bollywood begins…This record is about identity, belonging, family, sacrifice, love; mysticism. It’s about mythology; the power of a story; about brotherhood; redemption. It’s about the good and evil in all of us. About the country and world, we saw in the mirror of our deep isolation, and our fight to reclaim who we are; who we deserve to be.” These themes were heavily reflected in the setlist, as the show was broken down into 4 acts. Although they weren’t strict with following the exact tracklist coordinating with the album, the selection was comprehensive and vital in displaying the band's journey thus far, both personally and musically. From the moment Sameer’s powerful and resonant voice began to echo through the venue, it was clear that an unforgettable musical journey was about to unfold.

The crowd's excitement and passion reached a fever pitch when the band unleashed their high-energy hits like the iconic "Cough Syrup" and the infectious "Dollar $tore." The entire venue seemed to come alive as the audience fervently sang along, their voices merging with Gadhia's captivating vocals. The band's energy was contagious, creating an electric atmosphere that surged through the crowd. However, it was during the hypnotic and somber moments, such as the unreleased track "Metropolis" and "Tonight," that Young the Giant truly showcased their dynamic range and highlighted the vulnerability they graciously shared throughout the night. In these moments, the band's instrumentals expanded beyond the confines of indie rock, morphing into an experimental soundscape. The audience was mesmerized, as the band effortlessly navigated the intricate melodies, inviting listeners on an introspective journey through their world. The band’s ability to seamlessly transition between high-energy anthems and more contemplative tracks was a testament to their artistic versatility and their commitment to pushing the boundaries of their sound.

The concert encore embodied the band's love of funk in a fun selection of tracks including hits like Superposition and Silvertongue. With a giant, shining disco ball coming down from center stage, it is hard not to break out and dance. Just as Sameer was shuffling across the stage, the audience too fell under the spell of their funkadelic beat. There was so much love in the air that night. After a difficult journey of introspection and self-realization, this encore had been some much-needed fun to end the night in the best mood possible.

milky chance world tour

On this tour, attendees find more than just an extraordinary musical experience; they find a haven, a place where they can unapologetically express their emotions and feel a sense of belonging. As Sameer beautifully stated, "Young the Giant was created out of a desire to create a home, a place to belong." Young the Giant nurtures a welcoming atmosphere that empowers audience members to embrace their true selves, not only during the show but also in their own lives.

Be sure to check out Young The Giant, Milky Chance, and Talk this summer in a city near you!

Milky Chance Announce “Mind the Moon” World Tour

milky chance world tour

Following the release of their third studio album, Milky Chance have announced the “Mind the Moon” world tour. The tour kicks off in Oceania just after New Years before making its way to Europe, and eventually the US+Canada in March.

The German folk duo exploded in 2013 with the release of their first single, “Stolen Dance”, which charted across the globe. Their recent release, Mind the Moon, adopts many elements of their signature sound whilst blending different genres, such as reggae and rock.

Additionally, the group tweeted about their initiative to introduce more environmentally sustainable practices to their touring and music making.

Touring the world means contributing immensely to the increasing emission of heat, CO2 gases and water vapor through aviation.

They were fantastic to see live, had a super fun set.

Milky Chance was way better than I thought they would be; great music and show

A great show! The smile didn’t leave my face the entire time. Sound was great and the band was super engaging, got people dancing, and played all my favourite songs.

It was a great performance at a great venue

Great ladies night out! First time see Milky Chance, I will totally see them again.

Great performance!

Very unique stage and a great way to set the vibes. I’ve been to many concerts and this one is going down in the memory books! I wish it wasn’t so hot in the venue so everyone could really embrace the night.

Amazing show! Energetic and fun all throughout. Missed them a couple years back but glad that I catched them this time.

It was the most amazing concert I have ever been too!

The entire concert was surrounded by good vibes and there was never a dull moment! I would love to see them again whenever they come to Edmonton for tour! Best concert ever!

Better Live!

I love Milky Chance so I had to go. If you can believe it, they sound better live!

I was a super fan going into the concert on Friday night. Somehow I left loving Milky Chance even more. They gave it their all, and I gave my all in return, dancing and singing along! THANK YOU for an amazing experience.

Amazing live

Myself and my son went to this concert on Friday in Edmonton. The vibe was so good. Great band to see live.

MILKY CHANCE Kick Off 2024 With Nostalgic New Single ‘Reckless Child’

Following a sneak preview on triple j Drive last week, today, German-duo  Milky Chance   share nostalgic new single, Reckless Child . The new single lands ahead of the band’s arrival in Australia and New Zealand this week for a string of headline shows, with support from rising Sydney artist  Go-Jo . Written in the months following ‘Living In A Haze’ ’s release, Reckless Child was inspired by the creative freedom the band felt getting to work on new music once again.

Speaking on the new single, Milky Chance explain,  ”Reckless Child’ came with a light feeling of space after the release of our 4th album. This song portrays being childish and free, and when this feeling reappears in our current lives, it will always have a taste of a nostalgic memory.’

With the release of their acclaimed album  Living In A Haze  and the biggest tour of their career, 2023 was a monumental year for chart-topping German duo  Milky Chance .  Their 4th album ‘Living In A Haze’, featuring the globally acclaimed hits Colorado, Synchronize, and Living In A Haze,  charted around the world including Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the US, Canada, France, and beyond on its release. It quickly amassed over 500 million streams as the band embarked on their biggest tour ever, spanning 65 cities across North America and gracing iconic venues like Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheater .

The four-part album can be enjoyed here via AWAL/Jungle Youth Records. With a majority of the lyrics written by the band’s lead singer with Indian ancestry, Sameer Gadhia, the album tells the multi-generational saga of the American immigrant, and the origins, exiles, battles, and denouement of reclaiming their collective identity. “This is not just the story of an Indian-American caught in between two worlds,” the band’s Sameer Gadhia previously said, “it’s also our universal search to find meaning in chaos.”

“Epic doesn’t even begin to describe  American Bollywood . Seismic in scope and intimate in nature, Young the Giant’s fifth studio album is a massive artistic statement; it’s the band’s most ambitious and sprawling project of their career” – Atwood Magazine

The band unites with REVERB to reduce the tour’s environmental footprint and engage with fans to take action for people and the planet. Visit  here for more details.

In addition to the album and tour, Gadhia was recently named to Variety's 2022 Inclusion Impact Report , the publication's annual list highlighting advocates for inclusivity who've made an impact in the entertainment industry over the past year. In 2020, he launched Point of Origin on SIRIUSXM's Alt Nation, a platform to amplify voices of color.

Each month, he highlights an artist by playing their music on-air with heavy rotation, with each spin including a personalized introduction from Gadhia. Over the next year, Gadhia will expand this campaign as he continues to be a prominent, unwavering voice for equality and change.

Young The Giant was established in 2004 and is comprised of Sameer Gadhia (vocals), Jacob Tilley (guitar), Eric Cannata (guitar), Francois Comtois (drums) and Payam Doostzadeh (bass).
