CLEVELAND, Tenn. - Candy maker Mars marked two milestones on Tuesday at its M&M's production plant here - the start of a $142 million expansion and 40 years in Bradley County.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam said that Mars, the fifth largest private company in America, could expand anywhere but continues to choose Cleveland.

"They keep making big capital investments," he said during the groundbreaking about the expansion that will permit the company to add Hazelnut Spread M&M's to its product lineup.

BY THE NUMBERS

$142 million - New investment in Mars’ Cleveland plant300 million - M&M’s made daily at the factory40 - Truckloads leaving daily with product from plantSource: Mars Wrigley Confectionery U.S.

The expansion to its Peerless Road factory will add about 75 jobs to the more than 800 already at the plant that also makes Twix bars.

Mack Phillips, the plant's site director, said the new investment will lead the factory into the next 40 years.

"It allows us to grow, innovate and create new varieties," he said about the factory that makes more M&M's than anywhere in the world. Hazelnut Spread is slated to be launched in April 2019, Phillips said.

He said that 40 years in Cleveland is about family and community.

"Cleveland is an example of how Mars likes to do business," Phillips said

Bob Rolfe, commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development, said the state and Mars is negotiating a $500,000 incentive package that's to include Fast Track economic development and training grants. He said the average wage of the jobs is $27 per hour.

The Cleveland plant is part of Mars Wrigley Confectionery U.S., a division of the global Mars business, which generates $33 billion a year in revenue. Rolfe said it's the company's workforce that enables it to succeed and he cited the Tennessee Promise scholarships as helping to bolster Mars' local manpower needs.

Doug Berry, the Cleveland-Bradley Chamber of Commerce's vice president of economic development, said Mars is an anchor employer for the region.

"It's an iconic brand," he said. "You can have a career here."

Cleveland Mayor Kevin Brooks said he likes to look on M&M's packages and locate the made-in-Cleveland mark.

"I'm proud to say these M&M's are made in the sweetest town in the sweetest state," he quipped.

Haslam, who took a 20-minute tour of the plant, said Mars has made about $400 million in investments in Tennessee throughout its various businesses since he has been governor.

He mentioned the state's workforce and educational opportunities provided by Tennessee Promise and Tennessee Reconnect, a scholarship aimed at adult students.

"They can have the workforce they need going forward," Haslam said. "That's what businesses want to know today. Are we going to have the people we need."

Mars' Hazelnut Spread Chocolate Candies will feature a hazelnut spread center covered in milk chocolate, according to the company.

Mars Wrigley: Hazelnut M&Ms, more than 70 new jobs come to Cleveland factory

mars cleveland tn tours

CLEVELAND — Hazelnut-spread flavor M&Ms should come rolling off the production line in Cleveland, Tennessee, in January, Site Director Mack Phillips said Tuesday morning.

“You should be able to see them in the market in April” — maybe even a little earlier, he said.

Mars Wrigley Confectionery announced in October that its Cleveland plant, celebrating its 40th anniversary and already the largest of three M&M factories in the U.S., would make the new Hazelnut Spread M&M. The candy, with a soft center, will be packaged separately from chocolate or peanut M&Ms, much like the Caramel M&M introduced in 2017. The Cleveland plant at 3500 Peerless Road NW was also the site of the 2010 launch of Pretzel M&Ms.

The new product is the reason for a promised $142 million investment and more than 70 new jobs. About 800 already work at the Cleveland factory, Phillips said.

“We are very proud to make more M&Ms than anyone else in the world,” he said. “We also make the majority of left and right Twix for North America. The investment we’re making here today will lead us into the next 40 years.”

Ice baths and M&Ms: Secrets of the Rockettes revealed

The expansion groundbreaking drew a crowd of state and local officials, including outgoing Gov. Bill Haslam and his wife Crissy, who posed for pictures with three men in red, yellow and orange M&M costumes.

About 100 people, including plant workers, gathered on a frost-covered rise beyond the current factory’s side parking lot. They watched as Haslam and six other dignitaries — joined by a 40-year plant employee — donned white hardhats and picked up candy-logo shovels to toss in unison lumps of dirt from a waiting pile. Following the groundbreaking, company officials announced a plant tour but refused to allow media.

Mars Wrigley is world's largest candy-maker

Mars Wrigley Confectionary, the world’s largest candy-maker, is a branch of the family-owned Mars company. Mars, headquartered in McLean, Virginia, has more than 100,000 employees worldwide.

On the back of M&M bags, the letters CLV in the UPC mean the candy was made in Cleveland, Mayor Kevin Brooks said, a label he looks for with pride.

Forty truckloads of candy come out of the factory every day, Haslam said.

The pledged $142 million investment will come over several years, with future expansions needing individual corporate approval, Phillips said. The building expansion for Hazelnut Spread M&M production will be on the shipping-dock side of the current factory, but a new shipping gate for the redirected truck traffic will be built in the area of Tuesday’s groundbreaking ceremony, he said.

Jobs pay $27 per hour

Some production workers have already been hired, but more jobs are available, paying about $27 an hour plus benefits, Phillips said.

“People should still go to mars.com and look for jobs in Cleveland, Tennessee,” Phillips said.

In return the state is providing a job-training grant and an economic development Fast Track grant, a total of $500,000, state Economic & Community Development Commissioner Bob Rolfe said. The high-paying jobs are in line with Haslam’s initiative to attract better quality jobs to the state, Rolfe said.

“Certainly, Mars has delivered every bit of what we’re trying to accomplish in Tennessee,” he said.

Financial incentive of $2.9 million for company

From local governments, Mars Wrigley Confectionery will get a 37.5 percent discount for seven years on property taxes on the new investment, said Doug Berry, vice president for economic development at the Cleveland-Bradley Chamber of Commerce.

That’s expected to be a maximum savings of nearly $2.9 million for the company, but the final amount will vary with how much of the investment goes into real property, he said. If the retooling involves removing or replacing equipment, that property’s value will be deducted from the tax abatement, Berry said.

Phillips praised his five predecessors as site director, three of whom were present. Mars, as a company, looks for “mutually beneficial partnerships” with communities like Cleveland; and Haslam and the state ECD have been “huge partners” in several plant expansions, Phillips said.

Take a tour of the Mars Chocolate office, where life-size M&M's greet you at the door with free candy

Working for a candy company can be pretty sweet— especially if your employer is Mars.

According to  employees  at Mars Chocolate  — a segment of the $33 billion  Mars candy, pet care, and beverage company — the free Snickers and M&Ms aren't even the best part of their job.

"Mars Chocolate is a truly unique place to work," one associate told Business Insider during a recent visit to the  Hackettstown, New Jersey, office . "Everyone is passionate about the work they are doing — and the people are incredible.  We are one big family and that's not something you get everywhere."

Mars — which was ranked on Fortune's "100 Best Companies To Work For" list in 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016 — employs 72,000 people (who they call "associates") worldwide and over 25,000 in the US. About 16,000 of those global associates work for Mars Chocolate.

Here are some photos from our tour of the Mars Chocolate North America office in Hackettstown:

Four friendly M&Ms greet you at the main entrance of the building.

mars cleveland tn tours

Of the 16,000 Mars Chocolate associates around the globe, about 1,200 of them are in Hackettstown.

mars cleveland tn tours

Mars Chocolate produces 29 candy brands in total, including the billion-dollar global brands M&M's, Snickers, Dove, Milky Way, and Twix. The Mars Chocolate North America campus is also home to the M&M's factory, where 50% of all M&M's sold in the US are made. When you walk through the front doors of the office building, giant M&M's greet you with bins of complimentary candy.

mars cleveland tn tours

The Hackettstown M&Ms factory opened in 1958. The Mars Chocolate office was added to the plant in 1979.

mars cleveland tn tours

The M&M's brand was first launched in 1940. Today, the Hackettstown plant produces M&M's Milk Chocolate, M&M's Minis, and Peanut M&M's, as well as 21 different colors and custom print M&M's.

mars cleveland tn tours

Not too surprisingly, snacks are free for associates. The office has multiple vending machines. To get a snack, you just select the item you want and it comes flying out — no cash required!

mars cleveland tn tours

"Of course the free candy is a great perk," notes one associate. "But what makes this a truly wonderful place to work is the sense of family. Also, the culture is unlike anywhere else. People who work here often stay for a very long time — sometimes their entire career. And their kids will come work here. And then their grandkids. That says something about the company."

mars cleveland tn tours

Between 10% to 15% of the associates who work at the Hackettstown campus are generational associates, meaning a family member preceded them at the plant or office.

mars cleveland tn tours

During our tour, various associates commented on the "unmatched" culture, and reiterated the importance of Mars' five principals: quality, responsibility, mutuality, efficiency, and freedom to span generations, geographies, languages, and cultures.

mars cleveland tn tours

Mars offers a volunteer program called MVP (Mars Volunteer Program). Associates are encouraged to give back on a local, national, and/or global scale. In 2015, over 2,200 Mars Chocolate associates volunteered for more than 7,000 hours.

mars cleveland tn tours

"It's also a very collaborative environment," says an associate. "We all work together in some capacity."

mars cleveland tn tours

The open office is approximately 100,000 square feet.

mars cleveland tn tours

"We're very open and transparent," says an associate. "Even our conference room walls are clear glass!" she jokes.

mars cleveland tn tours

Each conference room is named and themed after a chocolate product.

mars cleveland tn tours

Everywhere you go, you see candy!

mars cleveland tn tours

The office also features a cafeteria, which offers employees gourmet meals.

mars cleveland tn tours

"We take health and wellness seriously here," says an associate. "We think of chocolate as a treat ... something you indulge in occasionally."

mars cleveland tn tours

The campus is 104 acres. "You'll regularly find employees taking a walk around campus to get some exercise," says an associate.

mars cleveland tn tours

The M&M's factory, a 460,000-square-foot facility, is a short walk from the office. The sweet chocolate aroma seeps out of the factory and hits you as you exit the office building. We didn't mind it one bit.

by Taylor Stewart

CLEVELAND, Tenn. — Wrigley Mars is investing more than 100 million dollars in Bradley County.

The M&M Factory in Cleveland is expanding, as it prepares to make M&M's newest flavor, Hazelnut Spread.

Employees gathered to watch state, county and city leaders break ground at the plant looking to hire 75 new people.

The factory's also celebrating 40 years of operation today.

Site manager Mack Phillips, invited 40 year employee Rickie Joins to break ground along with local officials.

Rickie called the opportunity "an honor."

Rickie says he's worked at the Cleveland location since the doors first opened.

Adding, "It was mostly a big empty building... I was working in maintenance and we would help build the [candy] wrappers."

He says today's innovation is bittersweet as he plans to retire at the end of this month.

Justin Timberlake / Vivid Seats

Justin Timberlake just “Can’t Stop The Feeling.”

The former *NSYNC singer is currently midway through his ‘The Forget Tomorrow World Tour’ that will take him to arenas all over North America from now until December.

That includes gigs at NYC’s Madison Square Garden on Tuesday, June 25 and Wednesday, June 26 .

Come fall, the 43-year-old will return to the Tri-State for concerts at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on Monday, Oct. 7, Newark’s Prudential Center on Tuesday, Oct. 8 and Buffalo’s KeyBank Center on Monday, Oct. 21.

Most excitingly, some tickets are surprisingly affordable to see the “Selfish” singer live.

Based on our findings, the lowest price we could find on seats was  $16 before fees  on Vivid Seats at the time of publication.

Yes, you read that right. That’s less than it will run you to pick up a tour tee at the merch table after a Timberlake show.

JT isn’t just bringing “SexyBack” this summer; in a world saddled by inflation, he somehow brought savings back, too.

Plus, if you dig into our archives, you’ll find that way back when we first reported on Timberlake tix in early February, prices started at $72 before fees .

Therefore, if you’re buying them now, you’re saving big time. Hey, sometimes, patience really does pay off.

As for other concerts on the nationwide run, all other Timberlake shows have seats starting anywhere from  $17 to $290 USD before fees depending on the concert you attend.

Want to find out how much tickets cost to see JT bring “Summer Love” to an arena near you?

You’re in the right place, TN Kids.

For more information, we’ve got everything you need to know and more about Justin Timberlake’s ‘The Forget Tomorrow World Tour’ below.

Prices listed above are subject to fluctuation.

Justin Timberlake tour schedule 2024

A complete calendar including all North American dates (as well as a few European ones), venues and links to the cheapest tickets available can be found here:

(Note: The New York Post confirmed all above prices at the publication time. All prices are in US dollars, subject to fluctuation and include additional fees at checkout .)

Vivid Seats is a verified secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They offer a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and your tickets will be delivered prior to the event.

Joey Fatone 2024 tour

From June through August, fellow *NSYNC alum Joey Fatone is hitting the road with AJ McLean joining him on select dates.

“It’s gonna be a lot of *NSYNC songs, a lot of Backstreet Boys songs,” Fatone shared on  Instagram .

If you want to see if the ’90s icon is headed to your neck of the woods, you can find Fatone’s complete tour schedule  here .

Also, it should be noted that  Chris Kirkpatrick  has a trio of concerts lined up this year as well.

Justin Timberlake set list

The ‘Forget Tomorrow World Tour’ launched in late April this year.

Justin Timberlake new music

On March 15, Timberlake dropped his sixth studio album “Everything I Thought I Was.”

Made up of 15 songs, the “The Social Network” star reflects on fame, his legacy, and life — and that’s just the contemplative lead track “Memphis.”

After that, Timberlake returns to the dance floor for the slinky “F**kin’ Up the Disco” and “No Angels.” This is the fun Timberlake you remember from the early aughts. All falsetto and club-ready beats, no self-seriousness here.

Other standouts include the bubbly “Infinity Sex,” the gorgeous ballad “Love & War” and the hypnotic “Sanctified.”

Of course, you’ll need to make it a priority to check out his long-awaited collab on “Paradise” with *NSYNC, too.

Want to hear the record in its entirety? If so, you can find “Everything I Thought I Was” here .

Justin Timberlake controversy

In October 2023, Timberlake’s ex Britney Spears dropped a bombshell tell-all memoir that shed light on their early-aughts relationship.

The “Toxic” singer made headlines with a passage about “ Timberlake cheat(ing) on her  and pressur(ing) her into  getting an abortion  when she wouldn’t have made that choice ‘if it had been let up to (her)’” according to the NY Post.

To get back at Timberlake, Spears’ fans rocketed her song — also named, “Selfish” but released way back in 2011 — to the top of the charts.

Spears, 42, took the high road and apologized for the brouhaha.

However, this week, Timberlake reignited the drama at his concert when he said, “I’d like to take this opportunity to apologize to absolutely…nobody” before launching into “Cry Me A River.”

“Someone told me someone was talking…about me on the streets,” Spears responded on Instagram. “Do you want to bring it to the court or will you go home crying to your mom like you did last time ??? I’m not sorry !!!”

You can read more about their rocky history  here .
