One of my personal favorites when it comes to small travel trailers is the Scamp 13 Standard Trailer because of its super short length, lightweight design, and affordable price point.

This is so helpful as I am looking for a camper for a single person when I retire! Thank you for taking the time to put this together.

You might also include the NuCamp tear drops – Tab 320 clamshell or shower and the Tab 400 teardrop with full shower and toilet. These are a little shorter than the Little Guy Max.

Also Rove UltraLite 14FD (bare bones but very affordable)…and a little larger but still smallest for it manufacturer: the plush Lance 1475 with full bath-shower, sink cabinet and toilet.

About the Author

Tom Davidock

Camping is one of the best ways to spend time as a family. It allows everyone to spend time outdoors, disconnected from devices, and enjoy the simpler parts of life. It’s also extremely easy and affordable to do so. All you need is a tent, sleeping bags, and a few campground essentials. Many small families will start with a tent and soon realize that they’re ready to upgrade to a more permanent setup and look to purchase an RV. Most people new to RVing at this stage find that the RV selection process can be a little overwhelming. Well, have no fear. Below, we’ll cover everything you need to think about when choosing the best RV. We will focus the following criteria on finding a camper for a family of four (two kids and two parents).

Where to start when looking for an RV for a family of 4

When searching for an RV, it’s easy to get bogged down with all the available options, especially if you’re new to the RV lifestyle. However, to help narrow your list of options, the easiest place to start is to consider your camping style. We all have extravagant dreams of traveling throughout the country, stopping at national parks, and reliving the intentions of Clark Griswold in National Lampoons Vacation. While this may be the goal, it should not be the limiting factor in your used RV search. It is essential to think about how you will realistically use your RV 90% of the time, rather than the 10%.

There are a few types of camping styles that may align with you. To get you started, below are a few examples of them.

Local camper at nearby campgrounds:

Camping locally may not seem glamorous, but you will likely get more nights under your belt in the RV, making more memories with your family. There are a lot of perks to local camping. First, you will spend more time out of the car and relaxing. You will also get to know your local campground and plan your trips to take full advantage of the events, activities, and amenities it offers. You will make friends and meet families who do the same thing, building a little community for your camping lifestyle. Many RV parks also offer storage options, so you may be able to store your RV at the campground and pull it into your reserved site when needed. During times of high gas prices, this is a huge benefit. You will also be closer to home, allowing you to work and camp at night. This aspect is my favorite benefit of local camping.

Below are some things to keep in mind when camping locally. First, you will likely be spending more time in your RV. Camping locally means you will have less desire to explore the areas outside the campground. Finally, while a smaller RV may make more sense for a cross-country trip, the additional room in a larger RV with a spacious floorplan may create a more enjoyable experience for your family at your local campground.

Vacation Camper:

Maybe you want an RV to hit the open road for a road trip or take an annual vacation once or twice per year. When you start researching RVs, it is easy to fall in love with the large and roomy floorplans, bunk rooms, outdoor entertainment centers, etc. However, consider your needs to tow it around if you primarily plan to use it for a few extended trips. Also, if traveling to that exciting destination is part of the lure of RV camping, consider that you will visit the sites and places around the campground and may spend less time there. A smaller, nimble RV may be the right fit for you.

Another thing to remember about size is that some state and national parks limit RV length. You may have found that perfect 32-foot travel trailer, but when you go to book your stay at Acadia National Park, they may not be able to accommodate it. Therefore, reviewing the campgrounds in the places you plan to visit is a good idea before deciding on an RV. That may help you make an informed decision.

Full-Timer:

Okay, so you decided to abandon the masses and head out on the road to travel for an extended period. Finding the right RV for this situation may require you to make several compromises. You will want the space of a large RV, but you also will want to remain agile.

Will you be taking kids? Do you want to convert a dinette into a bed day in and day out? Will you be homeschooling or working remotely, and do you need a dedicated space for that? You will need to consider storage, cooking, sleeping, and on-and-off grid camping. This book will not guide you through all your decisions, but hopefully, it will give you some things to think about as you plan for this lifestyle change. Full-time RVing can be an experience of a lifetime.

Selecting an RV style

Once you have a general idea of your camping style, you can start thinking about the needs (not only wants) you have for your RV. Also, remember that most RVs can do just about anything you want in the camping world. Therefore, by choosing the best RV for the 90% of the time you will be using it, you will more than likely be able to use it for the 10%.

A plan of action to lead you into the next section, searching for the RV, starts by focusing on a few key things: style, size, weight, tow vehicle, and floorplan. If you work through the planning process following this order, you will better understand what to look for in an RV.

Motorized RVs:

If having an engine in your RV is a priority, this is your category. Motorized RVs come in different shapes and sizes, best described as Class. They are also your most expensive options, and if looking in the used market, you will have the added responsibility of inspecting the engine components. I do not want to discourage anyone from going this route, but be aware that you should do a lot of shopping around to find the right RV because your upfront investment is more substantial.

Towable RVs

The most common entry point into the RV lifestyle is through the towable RV door. It is true in the new RV market and the used market. Do not think of a towable RV as a lesser alternative to motorized RVs. They offer many benefits over motorized RVs at a much lower price point. With a towable RV, you can significantly increase your living space for only a fraction of the cost of what it would take to do so for a motorized RV.

You also benefit from having a vehicle available to explore your surroundings near the campground. The towable market, because of its popularity, has countless options. Because of this, you will be able to find the perfect RV for your camping style. On one end of the spectrum, you have the option for a huge two-floor park model; on the other end, you can get a small teardrop camper that’s towable by a small SUV. There is a good reason why so many people camp with a towable. It is simply the best fit for the vast majority of campers.

used travel trailer

For this article, we will focus on towable RVs since they are the most common types of RVs that first-time campers choose. They’re also very family-friendly and have many different floorplans to accommodate kids. The most common type of towable RV is a travel trailer. The next most common is a fifth wheel . Also, if you plan to carry large equipment, like ATVs, motorcycles, or golf carts, you may want to look at toy haulers.

Tow Vehicles

Your tow vehicle is one of the first things you should consider when purchasing an RV. Your tow vehicle will be the limiting factor for the RV you choose. It’s also the most important consideration for safety. An undersized vehicle will not only make towing your RV more difficult, but it will also create a dangerous situation for your family.

Choosing a tow vehicle is not an inconsequential decision you can punt down the road (no pun intended). It’s the cornerstone of determining what towable RV you can get. If you don’t decide first, the RV will choose for you (your RV does not care about your budget). Next, you will need to look at the trailer’s weight and size it up to the tow vehicle. Each trailer will have a dry weight (how much it weighs empty) and wet weight (maximum amount of cargo plus the dry weight).

If you already own a pickup truck or large SUV and don’t plan to upgrade, first look at the towing capacity of your vehicle. To find your vehicle’s ratings, you will need to do some homework.

What makes a good RV for a Family?

RVs come in different shapes and sizes with an endless array of floorplans to fit everyone’s needs. With so many options, It’s no wonder why it’s challenging to find the perfect one. However, certain features lend themselves well to camping families. So let’s take a look at some of them.

Sleeping options for kids

The first thing we’ll discuss is sleeping capacity and options. The perfect family RV will have a dedicated space for everyone. If you focus your RV choice on ensuring that every family member has a bed, you’ll be able to narrow down your RV types. The absolute best RV option for a small family of four is an RV with bunk beds . This setup provides a main bedroom for the parents and a separate bed for each kid. If you choose a different style RV, you’ll likely need to convert a sofa or dinette into a bed, which can be a huge inconvenience for a large family.

kids in rv bunk beds

There are two main styles of bunk bed RVs. First, smaller RVs will have bunk beds integrated into the living area. This setup is a good option if you’re looking for a smaller and lighter RV. In addition, some bunk bed setups provide more privacy than others. The other better option (f you want a dedicated kid space)  is a bunk room, which provides a cordoned-off space for the bunk beds and is usually in the rear of the trailer. The benefit of a bunk room is that it separates all sleeping areas from the main living area. Bunk rooms are especially nice if you want to use the remainder of the RV while the kids are sleeping.

A notable feature that you’ll surely find when searching for an RV is slideouts. A slideout is a section of the room that extends out when camping but retracts when traveling. Some RVs will have upwards of five slides, but as the number increases, so does the weight of the RV. Many bunkroom models will offer a slide in the bunkroom, creating a larger space for the kids. Others will have a slide in the living room, master bedroom, or both. I recommend visiting an RV dealership to get a hands-on feel for the RV’s roominess.

Playspace or teen hangout

Regardless of the kid’s age, having a dedicated space for them to play or hang out is a huge benefit. Bunk rooms are an ideal option for this purpose. Bunk rooms provide plenty of room and storage space for toys and clothes. Many older children will also hook up their video game systems and use the bunk room as a gaming area. This extra space is a great way to keep the floor space in the rest of the RV uncluttered.

If an RV with a bunk room is not in your budget or size requirements, you can still achieve some of the above with a bunk bed area. Most bunk beds are tucked away in the RV and provide a little enclosed area for the kids. Younger children enjoy having this dedicated area. It’s a good idea to make this area kid-friendly and fun. My daughter decorates her bunk area and stores all her stuffed animals there. She loves to hang out there and watch a movie, and play. The best part of a bunk room is that kids can have their dedicated entertainment center while the parents can relax in the main living quarters.

Brand RV Banner Travel Bunk

Moden bunkhouses are often designed with this in mind. For example, many bunk areas will have separate storage compartments or shelves built-in, allowing kids to keep their items organized. Many will also have extra features like in-wall USB ports so kids can charge their tablets or phones.

Regardless of what style of bunk bed setup you choose, it’s smart to have a predetermined plan for where the kids will play and hang out. Keep this in mind when searching for RVs. When shopping for an RV, you will have many different floor plans with bunkhouses to choose from

Parent privacy

If you’re a parent, you know just how precious a little bit of privacy is. For your sanity, keep this in mind when RV shopping. The main bedroom will become very important to parents who need some space to unwind and find some quiet. A key feature you’ll want to look for in the main bedroom is a door that closes. Some RVs will have a main bedroom with a curtain that closes it off from the rest of the RV. While this is fine for many people, a sliding door or one on hinges is ideal. It helps seal noise from the rest of the family and provides you with your own space at night or if you want to relax and read a book.

RV main bedrooms usually offer a queen-size bed and are typically found in the front of the trailer. However, some larger RVs may provide a king-sized option. Since most RVs are standard widths, most King-sized bed options are typically only available in bedrooms with a slide. In addition, larger bedrooms typically provide additional storage, which is nice if you’ll be camping for longer periods. However, a queen bed is usually more than adequate for most camping trips .

Kitchen and dining

Another consideration you’ll have when RV shopping is the dining area. You typically have three main options to choose from: A traditional booth-style dinette, wraparound table, or free-standing dinette. All options are capable of accommodating a family of four. Deciding between these options is a matter of personal preference. However, depending on the RV model you’re looking at, you may not be given the option to choose. If given a choice, I prefer a free-standing table because I use it for work. It allows me to reposition the chairs and is a bit more comfortable. However, many people with large families prefer the large wraparound table since it provides more room for the entire family. The most traditional option is a booth-type dinette. This dining setup is nice since the booth typically folds into an extra bed, providing more sleeping space if you have friends or extended family members camping with you.

The kitchen is the other thing to keep in mind when selecting an RV. If you plan to do a lot of cooking in the RV, which is a great option for saving money, then make sure you choose an RV layout that meets your cooking style and has enough space. Also, don’t forget to look at the refrigerator. Some RVs have large residential-style refrigerators that provide plenty of space for your family’s food. Others will have smaller ones, and a very small RV may even have a dorm-sized fridge without a dedicated freezer. For most families, a moderate-sized refrigerator will easily accommodate a family of four.

The other important feature of a family RV is the bathroom . Keep in mind the whole family will be sharing this. Most campers will have a full-sized bathroom, but they may be tiny in a small camper. Some of the largest trailers may also offer a second half-bath with just a toilet and sink. When selecting an RV, pay extra attention to the bathroom and ensure it meets your family’s needs. A spacious bathroom is nice, especially when you have a lot of people sharing it. Some bathrooms will have free-standing showers, and others will have a mini tub and shower combo. The free-standing showers are usually found in larger full bathrooms. However, some parents may prefer the tub option for small children. In the smallest RVs, you may have a wet bath, which means that the shower, sink, and toilet are all in one area. However, this wouldn’t be very common if you’re looking for a family RV and are usually only found in a Class C motorhome or a teardrop trailer- not travel trailers and fifth wheels.

Best Travel Trailers and Fifth Wheels for Families

Nearly all trailer manufacturers will provide different models with options for camping families. Below are the best options for various RV sizes and types. Next, we’ll take a closer look at a variety of RVs for families.

Best Small Travel Trailers

2023 jayco jay flight slx 7 184bs.

image

One of the most popular models of small RVs is the Jayco Jay Flight series. The 184BS offers a queen-sized bed, bunk beds, a well-equipped kitchen, and a bathroom with a tub/shower combo in a super small package that some larger SUVs can tow . It’s amazing how they managed to fit everything into this small space. So if you’re in the market for a small travel trailer that offers enough sleeping room for a family of four without needing to convert a sofa or dinette to a bed, then this is one of the best options on the market. The 2023 model features a super clean-looking white interior design.

While you lose some features typically found in a larger travel trailer, like an oven, and a larger bathroom, you more than make up for it with size and weight. New in 2023, Jayco added a roof-mounted A/C, which is an upgrade over the previous wall-mounted unit. Not many bunk bed RV models have as small a footprint as the Jayco 184BS. If you currently own a vehicle that can tow this, it’s an excellent choice for a travel trailer if you are not looking to upgrade your tow vehicle.

It’s hard to compare a small travel trailer like this to its larger-sized competition. However, there are some things you should be aware of if opting for a small camper this size. The living and sleeping areas are all within the same space, with the main bedroom only separated by a curtain. There is no privacy curtain or divider for the bunk area. Additionally, the only seating will be the dinette, so don’t expect to spend a lot of time in the RV with the entire family and not feel cramped. It’s a great option for families that need a small RV and plans to maximize their outdoor space while using the RV primarily for sleeping and eating.

However, one great option for a small camper trailer like this is to consider adding an RV awning room , which adds additional living space outside the entry door. Adding this accessory is one of the best things you can do to increase the space in your small RV. The Jayco features a 10-foot awning that will allow you to easily add this feature.

While the 184BS is small, that’s what makes it special. It’s one of the best small RV models available on the market. If you’re looking for a comparable RV, you may want to check out the Geo Pro 20BHS.

2023 Winnebago Micro Minnie 2100BH

image 1

If you’re looking for a small Bunk Bed RV with a little more room than the Jayco 184BS, the Winnebago Micro Minnie 2100BH is a great option. While the Winnebego is more expensive, this particular model is a good choice if you need a little more room. With the 2100BH, you get some extra room provided by the single slide for the dinette area combined with an excellent build quality. Also, while this model is a little heavier than the Jayco, you can still tow it with a capable SUV or pickup truck. In 2023, Winnebago gives you the option of swapping out the dinette for an EZ Glide Sofa Sleeper with a hidable table. I’m not the biggest fan of a dinette, so this change is a nice one to see.

Another great option about the 2100BH is the ability to customize it for your needs. For example, if you don’t want the dinette, you can swap this out for an EZ Glide Sofa Sleeper, which will provide a sitting area for the family to watch a movie on the included LED TV. Of course, the RV also has some pretty cool standard features, including a wireless phone charger, Wifi Prep, and heated and enclosed holding tanks (great for cold-weather camping and preventing your water tank from freezing) with the Comfort Tech Package.

While the 13.5 BTU  air conditioner should be more than enough to cool the camper, you can upgrade to a 15K BTU unit if you plan to camp frequently in a very hot climate. You can also upgrade to the Explorer Package, including a roof-mount solar power prep, larger off-road radial tires, propane heating system, heavy-duty axles, and suspension, among other upgrades.

Best Lightweight Travel Trailers (mid-sized)

Coachmen freedom express 292bhds.

The 292BHDS has one slide out on the off-door side and one entry door on the door side. Interior layout from front to back: front bedroom containing foot facing queen bed with vaulted under-bed storage, overhead cabinet, and wardrobes on either side of bed; swivel entertainment center; kitchen living dining area off-door side slide out containing sofa with overhead cabinet and u-shaped dinette; door side kitchen containing double basin sink, overhead cabinet, cook top stove, microwave overhead, and refrigerator; door side bathroom; off door side pantry; rear bunk room with two bunk beds on the off-door side, wardrobe, one bunk on the door side with storage underneath. Exterior camp kitchen includes; mini refrigerator, sink and cook top.

If you’re searching for a new travel trailer that is lightweight and offers a bunk room, the Coachmen Freedom Express Travel Trailer 292BHDS is an excellent option. This lightweight trailer can be towed by some half-ton pickup trucks. The trailer also features a large slideout in the main living area, giving you more room for the family. Like most RVs this size, you get a full kitchen, full bathroom, and entertainment center. You’ll also enjoy the wraparound dinette, capable of comfortably seating the entire family. Parents will like the master suite sealed off by sliding doors. It features a queen size bed and plenty of storage for clothes.

The bunk room does not have a solid door but utilizes a curtain. The curtain may be one of the downsides of this model. However, the room does have three beds, which is great if your kids want to bring their best friend along for a camping trip. There is also a ton of shelving in the bunk room, which will help keep all of the kid’s toys and items neatly organized.

The 2100BH has a 19′ awning, plenty of cargo storage, and a full outdoor kitchen with a refrigerator and sink. The RV also has a heated and enclosed underbelly and large windows and is prepped for solar panels.

2022 Keystone Outback 291UBH

Floorplan of RV model 291UBH

While we’re still waiting on the specs for the 2023 mode, the 2022 Keystone Outback 291UBH could be one of the lightest moderately sized travel trailers, with premium features, on the market today. The 291UBH offers a unique design unlike any other travel trailer on the road. The trailer offers a rear bunk bed setup with larger bunks than the traditional twin style and a closable door. The bunkhouse area is perfect for small kids and provides plenty of room to make the space their own.

Innovative storage is a hallmark of this unit. There is a hidden pantry behind the entertainment center, which provides a large amount of storage for food and supplies. Most people won’t even realize it’s there until they open it and will be in awe of the amount of space. In addition, the unit has a single large slide in the living room, opening up the trailer for plenty of room for relaxing and entertaining.

The 291UBH offers a full kitchen inside and a refrigerator and stove outside. The bathroom has a roomy stand-up shower and plenty of room. The main bedroom offers a queen-sized bed with easy access to under-bed storage. This area also has a dog door and can serve as a kennel for small dogs.

The trailer also offers a lot of premium features. It’s prepped for solar, has power stabilizing jacks, a water docking station, on-demand Water Heater , solid steps, and a lighted power awning. The remarkable aspect of this trailer is that they deliver all of this with a GVW of 8,200 lbs, which is towable by most half-ton trucks.

Best Premium Travel Trailer

2023 rockwood 2911bs.

The Rockwood 291BS, built by Forest River (one of the leading RV manufacturers), is an absolutely beautiful bunkhouse travel trailer. The trailer offers two slides, one in the living room and the other in the main bedroom. There is also a separate bunkroom that sleeps 3 with a closable door. The L-shaped kitchen maximizes cooking and food storage space and is decorated in light colors that contribute to the RV’s roominess feel. Large families will also love the wraparound seating area for dining, which converts into a sleeping area for the occasional extra guest.

The main bedroom is super spacious and provides an east-to-west facing bed, made possible by the bedroom slide, providing a wonderful oasis for parents seeking privacy. There are two entry doors to the main living area and the bedroom.

The bathroom is compact but doesn’t feel too cramped. In addition, it offers a standard Showermiser Water Saving System and Maxxait ventilation fan, which is usually only found in more expensive units. The unit also has a very convenient bike door, allowing you to easily store your bikes or larger equipment under the bunk without having to drag it through the RV.

Outside, you also get other premium features such as power-stabilizing jacks, solid steps, and an outdoor kitchen with its own awning. Found mostly on premium RVs, the Rockwood has a Quick Recovery Water Heater w/ Interior Gas/Electric Switches. This ensures you’re not wasting water waiting for it to heat up and allows for a long hot shower. Additionally, the RV controls use the OneContrrol Panel, which allows you to operate it with a smartphone.

2023 Winnebago Voyage V3538BR

image 4

The Voyage is one of the roomiest bunkhouse models available, offering three slides- one in the bunk room and two in the main living area. The kitchen takes advantage of this extra space by offering an island with a large sink. However, the RV is on the heavier side with an 11,000 GVR and may require a ¾ ton truck for towing because of the extra room.

In the typical Winnebago style, you have many opportunities for upgrades and customizations. For example, you can choose a larger residential-sized refrigerator, swap out the dinette for a free-standing table, or upgrade from a queen-sized bed to a King-sized.

This trailer also has a huge bathroom with plenty of storage, ideal for larger families. In addition, you have two entry doors, solar prep, power stabilizers (with optional auto-level), and solid steps. Inside, in addition to the furnace, you will also have an electric fireplace which provides a nice ambiance when relaxing and watching a movie. Like the Micro Mini, you can also upgrade to different packages, including the comfort tech package or the explorer package, providing more options for camping in colder environments and more rugged terrain.

Best Fifth Wheel

While we generally focused on travel trailers for this article, we decided to throw in one of the best family fifth-wheel RVs. The Jayco Eagle 355MBQS offers a unique mid-bunk option for family camping, placing the kid’s sleeping area in the center of the RV rather than the back (one of its key features). This setup opens the entire rear of the camper for a living room and an extremely spacious feel. In addition, the Jayco Eagle has five slides in the RV, two in the main living area, one in the bunkroom, and another in the bedroom. This fifth wheel is the most spacious family RV reviewed here, offering lots of extra room.

The mid bunk room has a pullout sofa that converts to a bed, a top bunk, and a desk that can serve as a mobile office or entertainment center. Above the bunk room is another loft for kids, which the young ones will love. Finally, the main bedroom has an east to west facing bed, and with the slide, it offers parents an extremely spacious bedroom with tons of storage.

The dining area has a unique dinette hybrid booth with two free-standing chairs. You also have a 3-person sofa and theater seating, accommodating all family members for movie night. The kitchen is also very large and has a center island with a double sink. You will also get a full 21 CU FT residential-sized refrigerator.

If you’re a family with kids looking for a fifth-wheel trailer, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better layout than the Jayco 355MBQS. It’s ideal for families who spend a lot of time camping or full-timers.

I am extremely surprised that you did not include the Tab 400. I researched for months for a light weight trailer, including some of the ones featured in your article. I seem to always be drawn back to the NüCamp Tab 400 Boondock. We like everything about it. Finally bought one from Tom’s Camperland in Phoenix. Despite all the great reviews I am curious as to why it was left out.

Would e ni e if the cargo capacity was published. Important for a small trailer.

Nucamp Tab 400 is built better then all of the campers above, yet you leave it off the list from light weight campers, why?

We are extremely satisfied with our Coachmen Freedom Express 20SE, it’s a 25ft unit, 4,200lbs dry and GVWR 6,000 lbs. We have a real front bedroom with a queen bed, rear side door entry, a kitchen with decent countertop length. No slide, we can go and park everywhere, specifically at Walmart or Cracker barrel. It has an aluminum frame, towing with a half ton even without connecting the WDH is easy.

We have a NuCamp T@B 320S. Love it. Better built than anything you listed above.

How did you arrive at these 10 trailers? What was the scoring criteria? How did each of the features compare? Were these selected based on customer reviews? And 6000 lbs GVWR is light? That’s a 1/2 ton truck rated towing capacity. We just bought a truly light weight camper with a unloaded weight of 1800 lbs and tongue weight of 220 lbs. We can load it with two ebikes and two 10 ft kayaks, lower the bed at our destination, has an outdoor kitchen, towed with our 4 cylinder SUV, and was less than $14,000 new. They do sell a 21 ft toyhauler version for less than $25,000 with a GVWR under 5000 lbs. Now that’s lightweight affordable fun.

Which one did you purchase

Everybody wants to know, what did you buy?

Tom, which SUV are you using to tow this trailer and what is the make and model of your trailer

just bought a 2023 20se. after doing so read all kinds of post with mixed reviews. Are you still happy with this camper?

All of our reviews are based on exhaustive research, industry experience and whenever possible, hands-on testing. When you make a purchase using one of our chosen links we’ll get a small percentage of the proceeds. This supports the site and keeps Jeffsetter running. You can read more here .

Whether you’re new to RVing or simply want to check out all of your options, there are a number of things to consider when shopping for some of the best small campers for a family of four. What features do you need or expect in a compact camper, and how large is your overall budget?

In this article, we will go over everything you should know about why you may want to purchase a small camper for your family of four. We will also go over all of the things you should consider before making an RV purchase, including a number of things that are unique to small camper lifestyles.

If you are considering a small camper for your family of four, you are in the right place. Let’s get started and talk about all of the things you should consider before jumping to our list of 11 of the best small campers for a family of four.

Only interested in checking out our specially curated list of RVs? Check out our table of contents to jump ahead to our top 11 picks for the best small campers for a family of four!

Why Small Campers are a Good Fit for Families of Four?

It may surprise you to hear, but small campers are ideal for a family of four for a number of reasons. While you may think that having the maximum number of square footage inside of your RV is necessary for you and your family to have a good time while camping, many people think quite the opposite.

Floor plans and layouts on compact RVs these days are very innovative and spacious, often allowing for sleeping arrangements for families of four, if not larger groups as well . You can expect enough storage so that you don’t have to sacrifice bringing things that you might need, and there should be enough space for everyone to sleep comfortably.

But what other reasons are there that make small campers a good fit for families of four? Here are some other considerations if you are still on the fence as to whether or not a small camper is a good fit for your family:

  • Easier on your budget . Small campers are both small in their interior square footage as well as small in price. Typically, you won’t expect to spend over $50k for a small camper, and this is one that should have all the bells and whistles included in the initial purchase price. The smaller the camper, typically the cheaper it is, and this only leaves you with more funds to enjoy your vacation with your family!
  • Easier on fuel . Alongside the initial purchase price being less expensive compared to larger RVs, you should be able to save some money in terms of your overall fuel expenses if you are choosing to tow a smaller camper. Smaller travel trailers are typically more lightweight, easier to tow, and should utilize less fuel overall, which keeps your bills down.
  • Easier to tow . Going alongside the fact that small campers will save you money on fuel overall, they will also save your tow vehicle and overall stress levels while on the road. Smaller travel trailers are much easier to tow than larger ones, and you will also likely find that it is easier to park and camp if you aren’t towing an extremely large camper behind you. Even if you are experienced when it comes to towing an RV, it’s always easier to start small!
  • Go places that large RVs can’t . Another huge plus to purchasing a smaller RV for your family of four is the fact that it should be easier to access more remote locations or areas that are difficult to navigate. While nobody would recommend towing your RV into an area that is difficult to navigate, smaller campers give you more freedom in terms of where you camp and choose to park. In addition, many national and state parks have length limits on their campsites , which may mean that a larger camper is more limited and its preservation opportunities. If you want more freedom while on the road, going with a small camper is a good idea!
  • Maintenance and upkeep are less of a hassle . All RVs need maintenance, from the awnings to the propane systems, but a smaller camper means that you have less to maintain overall. Having a 19 foot long travel trailer versus a 40 foot long travel trailer gives you significantly less square footage to maintain, whether it’s resealing the roof or redoing your flooring. Your time and overall costs will be lessened, and smaller campers tend to be less of a hassle overall.
  • Small space means more opportunity for family bonding . Choosing to purchase a small camper for your family of four should be an exciting opportunity, for a number of reasons. Not only are smaller campers easier to drive and maintain, but it also means that you and your family will likely see each other quite a bit while on your trip. The smaller space may not be something that everyone appreciates at first, but having the option to spend some quality time with your family in a cozy camper is a great reason to go small!

What to Consider in a Small Camper for a Family of Four?

Now that you know some of the reasons why you may want a small camper in the first place, what should you consider in a small camper for your family of four? Let’s go over some of the top things to think about before making a final purchase!

Number of Sleeping Arrangements

One of the first things that you should consider before purchasing a small camper for your family of four is the number of sleeping arrangements that you may need. Obviously, you need enough space for four people to sleep, but how might this affect your layout, and what size beds do you need so that everyone is comfortable?

If you are traveling with two small kiddos, a simple bunk bed setup may work perfectly for you. However, if you’re traveling with older kids or other adults, you may need a few different sleeping arrangements. Plus, are you sharing a bed with your partner, and how large do you need that to be?

There are countless numbers of small campers available on the market today, so it’s not impossible to find something that meets your expectations. However, it is important to keep in mind what those expectations are before you start shopping, as many small campers follow similar footprints to each other. It can be difficult to find something unique, but not impossible!

Layout and Floor Plan

Speaking of similar footprints, the layout and floor plan that you choose for your small camper matter more than most other aspects of an RV. Choosing a layout that doesn’t work well for you and your family can make or break an RV experience, and that’s the last thing you’ll likely want!

Making a list of priorities in terms of what you are expecting in a small camper is a good idea before you start shopping. Do you want a spacious kitchen so that you can cook meals for the whole family, or would you like more space in the shared bathroom?

Are you hoping for a more private bedroom that is separate from the rest of the family, or are you comfortable sleeping in the same general area as the kiddos? Plus, do you want your living space to have anything special in it so that you can relax at the end of a long day with the family?

No matter what you were looking for, there’s a small camper out there for you . However, it may take some searching to find something that suits all of your expectations. This is something to keep in mind as you shop, as you may not be able to find everything you are hoping for in a compact travel trailer.

Bathroom Type

One of the most important things to consider when shopping for any type of compact RV is the type of bathroom you want. RVs typically have two different bathroom styles, known as wet baths or dry baths. Depending on which you go with, your experience is fairly different.

For example, do you want a dedicated dry bathroom that has the feel of a more traditional bathroom, or do you feel comfortable with a wet bath on board your RV? Choosing a wet bath essentially means that you allow everything inside of your bathroom to get wet, often limiting access to all of the amenities and features within the bathroom.

No matter what you go with, it’s fairly easy to find small travel trailers with bathrooms on board . However, you may need to adjust your expectations as to what style of bathroom you end up owning, as wet baths are more popular than dry baths, the smaller you go!

Amenities or Luxury Features

If you are new to shopping for an RV, it’s important to note that most RV manufacturers only include a set amount of amenities that are included in the initial purchase price. This is especially true if you are looking at an RV that is billed as a standard RV, not a luxury one.

Luxury RVs are typically higher in price, they either have more upscale furnishings or more included amenities in that initial purchase price. This is important to know if you are looking for something with a lot of bells and whistles and special features, as luxury RVs may be a better bet for you to start with.

Whether you are shopping for a standard or luxury camper, here are some popular amenities or luxury features to consider as you shop:

  • Solar capabilities
  • Additional batteries
  • Four season camping capabilities
  • Automatic leveling or jack stand systems
  • Larger refrigerators or appliances
  • All-terrain tires or traction
  • Tinted or frameless windows
  • Wind sensing awnings
  • Upgraded cabinetry, flooring, or other interior features

This only scratches the surface as to just how many features you can adjust, both inside or outside of your RV. However, keep in mind that all of these things come at a price, and it may be something that you can add after you drive the RV home.

When it comes to amenities and luxury finishes, it’s important to consider just how often you plan on using your RV. If you consider yourself an avid camper, you may want to use your travel trailer multiple times throughout the year. However, if you know you won’t be camping all too often, how luxurious does it need to be?

Ability to Boondock

Going hand-in-hand with amenities and luxury features is whether or not you want to have the ability to boondock in your small camper for a family of four. Boondocking, also known as dry camping, is the act of camping off-grid, disconnected from typical RV utilities including electricity, water, and sewer.

Boondocking is extremely popular nowadays, including among adventurous families. If you’re purchasing a small camper, you may want to have the ability to go anywhere and everywhere that it can take you. This includes camping off-grid and relying on your contained RV utilities.

However, not all small campers are equipped for boondocking, especially if you want to camp for an extended period of time. You may want to seek out an RV with off-grid living in mind, or make sure that you add on additional amenities that aren’t included in your standard purchase price.

Some popular boondocking features and accessories may include:

  • Pre-wired for solar, and solar panels included
  • Heavy duty inverter
  • Multiple house batteries, ideally lithium ion
  • Larger holding tanks, both freshwater and gray water
  • Propane tanks, ideally at a larger capacity
  • All electric campers, eliminating the need for propane
  • All terrain tires, a raised chassis, or some combination of the two

Again, boondocking features may not be something you are interested in if you plan on camping in locations that have utility hookups at all times. You may also find that you only want the boondock for a night or two, which should be achievable in just about any modern day camper.

However, if you do want to go off-grid for multiple days, finding an RV that can handle that sort of thing is a good idea!

Length and Weight of Trailer

One of the most important things to consider before purchasing a small camper for a family of four is just how much your tow vehicle can handle. The overall length and weight of your travel trailer are key to driving your RV safely and securely.

You are already shopping for a small camper, so you likely won’t tow anything longer than 25 feet . However, even smaller RVs have drastically different weights and this is the most important thing to pay attention to before purchasing any type of towable RV.

Knowing the weight limits that your tow vehicle can handle it’s a good idea before you start shopping. Some small campers are as lightweight as 1500 pounds, but others can be over 5,000 pounds. It’s a huge weight difference, and something you need to know before you camp in or drive an RV.

Finally, the last consideration you should think about before purchasing anything is the amount of money that you will be able to spend on a small camper. The average cost of a small travel trailer ranges anywhere from $10k to well over $50k, depending on the luxurious amenities and overall features.

Thankfully, small campers typically cost less than large ones, and it shouldn’t be very difficult to find something that works well for you and your family of four. However, always keep in mind that the initial purchase price of any camper will likely not be what you end up paying.

Between adding amenities and mandatory safety packages that are required by RV manufacturers, the initial or standard purchase price quoted to you is rarely what you pay walking out the door. So, keep an open mind in terms of these additional costs, especially if you find that there are some amenities that you simply can’t live without.

You should feel confident about sticking to a budget, but also creating a small camper that works perfectly for your family of four!

Now that we have discussed all the things that you should consider in a travel trailer for your family, let’s get to our list of 11 of the best small campers for a family of four. Keep your list of must-haves in mind, and enjoy our specially curated list of choices!

Best Overall: Lance 2185 Travel Trailer

  • Compact floor plan with bunk beds
  • Contemporary and modern interior design
  • Customizable and versatile
  • Fairly high initial purchase price

When it comes to finding a small camper for your family of four, you are likely searching for something that can last a lifetime. The Lance 2185 travel trailer is a fantastic option for those of you looking for something that has some level of resale value as well as reliability. Let’s talk about what makes this travel trailer special now.

The 2185 model in particular works well for families of four, as it has a spacious walk around queen bed area and bunk beds so that you can sleep everyone comfortably. Plus, the exterior of the camper is 26 feet, including the tongue and jack, making it compact and easy to tow.

One of the other reasons to choose a Lance travel trailer for your family is the fact that you can customize it to make it what you want. You can add solar panels if your family plans on boondocking frequently, or you can get a tankless hot water heater so that you can have unlimited hot showers.

Lance travel trailers are built with four season camping in mind, equipped with added insulation and Azdel walls. You likely won’t have any issues keeping the entire family warm and comfortable, no matter the season and location you are in. This bodes well in terms of the resale value and overall sturdiness of the trailer itself.

The interior design on this particular small camper is modern and luxurious, but still easy to clean and maintain. There is storage located throughout the RV, including in the doors and beneath the beds. You also have exterior storage compartments and the option to add a kayak or bike rack to your RV so that you don’t have to leave anything behind.

So, what’s the catch when it comes to this lightweight and beautiful travel trailer? The price point is fairly high for a Lance, likely given its resale value and durability. However, if you want a small camper for your family of four, and you want it to last quite a while, this option may be one for you to seriously consider!

Best on a Budget: Coachmen Clipper Ultra Lite

  • Super lightweight and easy to drive
  • Many floor plans across many lengths
  • Customizable and budget-friendly
  • Basic interior design

There are a number of different lengths and floor plans available for the Coachmen Clipper Ultra Lite, but there’s still a lot to love, especially when you consider its budget for the price point. Let’s talk about this small camper in more detail now.

Boasting a compact frame that weighs an average of 3000 pounds, the Clipper is perfect for those of you looking for a lightweight trailer that is easy to drive. While there are many different floor plans available for this particular RV, the compact end of these averages anywhere from 18 to 22 feet in length.

This means that you have a compact camper for your family of four that is easy to tow and park, and it still has space for everyone to relax comfortably. In terms of the interior living space on this RV, it seems to leave much to be desired. It is nothing special inside, but no doubt some interior design features will help you feel more at home.

One of the great things about this particular travel trailer is the fact that you can customize it to your heart’s content. The Clipper starts off fairly basic, but you can add solar panels, an all-terrain package, outdoor kitchens, and much more . However, keep in mind that these things will not be included in the initial purchase price.

One of the other great things about this particular small camper is that all of the floor plans that have bathrooms appear to have dry baths as opposed to wet baths. This gives you something that feels a bit more residential for you and your family, without sacrificing the necessary square footage. Plus, many of these floor plans also have bathtubs, making them ideal for those of you with young children or pets.

Lightest Weight: Forest River No Boundaries 16.6

  • Super lightweight and compact
  • Multiple floor plans across multiple lengths
  • Tons of storage throughout and outside
  • Interior design isn’t particularly special

While all of the floor plans found under the No Boundaries label from Forest River remain under 3500 pounds, the 16.6 floor plan is ideal for those of you with families. But why might this be? Let’s take a look at it in a bit more detail now.

Just under 22 feet in length, the 16.6 floor plan found on the No Boundaries travel trailer line is ideal for young children, as it has a unique bunk bed floor plan. There’s also a comfortable queen size bed and a fantastic bathroom on board, all found on a compact frame.

The kitchen has a fairly sizable residential fridge in it, and the dinette should comfortably seat the whole family of four. The bunk beds are also unique in that you can lift them up and lay them flat against the wall, giving you plenty of room to store any recreational goodies that you may want to bring with you, such as bikes or kayaks.

If this particular floor plan isn’t what you are hoping for, there are a number of other options under the No Boundaries label. Ranging in length starting as low as 12 feet long, there’s bound to be something that works well for you and your family! This is likely doubly true when you consider the fact that the smallest models only weigh 1500 pounds.

With a few more additions and customizations, this RV is also ideal for off-grid camping and boondocking, given the fact that you can add exterior roof storage and solar panels. You also have the option for an outdoor kitchen, all-terrain tires, and much more.

I highly recommend reading our full review of the Forest River RV brand in case you are on the fence about the reliability or durability. Forest River adds a lot of special touches throughout their RVs, as they are familiar with what is expected of this style of living, but do your research before making your final purchase!

Best Starter Camper: Jayco Jay Feather Micro

  • Under 5,000 lbs, making it lightweight
  • Easy to tow and drive at 20 ft long
  • Beautiful interior design and good floor plans
  • Higher price point than average

Boasting that all of their models fall under 5,000 pounds, the Jay Feather Micro from Jayco is an ideal choice for those of you just beginning your RVing journey. These models are compact, well-built, and don’t weigh very much, which can be a big relief if you are just starting off towing. Let’s take a closer look at this RV now.

Knowing that this RV starts at $35k may feel a bit daunting at first. However, there’s a lot to love about Jayco RVs- make sure you read our full review about this brand first and foremost. They put a lot of detail and thought into their interior design, which is something to keep in mind as you shop.

One of the best floor plans for a family of four stops at just over 20 ft in length, and it has rear bunk beds, a full dry bath with a bathtub, a spacious kitchen and dining area, and a bed for the adults located at the front of the rig. This is a fairly typical floor plan for a compact travel trailer, but it’s truly all you need to keep you and your family comfortable.

Jayco is also a fantastic brand when it comes to customizing your RV. If you plan on using this particular travel trailer frequently, you can add heated pads to your holding tanks, or solar to the rooftop so that you can extend your camping adventures. However, you can always leave it as is and have everything you need to enjoy a camping trip with your family.

If you are looking for something to begin your camping adventures with your family, this is a great place to start. The interior design on this RV is a step up from any past listings, but this may add a bit to your initial purchase price. This is something to consider, but the Jay Feather Micro is lightweight and popular for a reason!

Most Compact: Scamp 16’ Travel Trailer

  • Unique fiberglass exterior
  • Incredibly compact and lightweight
  • Fun and refreshing interior design
  • High price point for something so small

While it may not sound ideal camping with your family of four in a 16 foot long travel trailer, the Scamp model and manufacturer is unique, compact, and ingenious in terms of its design. Let’s take a look at the most compact travel trailer that sleeps 4 on our list now.

Scamp is an RV manufacturer that makes fiberglass RVs. These RVs have a distinct look, as their rounded shape keeps them aerodynamic and lightweight on the road. In fact, the 16 foot long Scamp travel trailer weighs less than 5,000 pounds!

It may surprise you to hear that the 16 foot long Scamp travel trailer has a double bed for the parents and a bunk bed for the kiddos located at the other end of the rig. In between, you have your kitchen and compact wet bath. This may come as a surprise and disappointment, to hear that this model does not have a dedicated dry bathroom, but there’s still a lot to love about this particular RV.

The interior design of the Scamp depends on which model you choose. The video above doesn’t feature the bunk bed layout but it does give you an idea of what you can expect from a Scamp trailer.

There is a deluxe edition with slightly more interior design features and thoughtful touches, alongside an increased purchase price. However, even the standard model has a lot to offer in terms of its contemporary and cozy interior, with wood panel cabinets and comfortable upholstery.

If you find that the 16 foot long Scamp may not be right for you and your family, there is a 19 foot model as well. This option will give you a little bit more interior living space, but it will of course come at a higher cost. You may not need all of this extra space, but when it comes to making sure that your family is comfortable, this is definitely something to think about!

Most Storage: Forest River Wolf Pup

  • Multiple floor plans all under 23 ft
  • Lightweight and easy to tow
  • Easy to clean interior
  • Make sure the price suits your budget

The Wolf Pup from Forest River is a fantastic choice for those of you hoping to camp with your family of 4 because all of the floor plans are lightweight and easy to tow. Plus, they are all under 23 feet long, making them compact. Let’s check them out in more detail now!

Budget-friendly but still with some interior design expression, the Wolf Pup comes in nearly 10 different floor plans. All of these are ideal for a family of four, especially when you consider that there are some bunk bed options. Plus, it looks contemporary and clean inside.

Depending on what you are looking for, the Wolf Pup is well-equipped for boondocking just based on its standard features alone. However, Forest River offers multiple packages and options for you to add on, should you want to consider something with a bit more power for off-grid camping.

Circling back to the interior design, the Wolf Pup offers complementary cabinetry and flooring, all of which are easy to clean and maintain. This is great when it comes to traveling with the kiddos, let alone if you plan on traveling with your dogs!

Plus, every single floor plan offers overhead cabinetry storage as well as plenty of exterior storage. This means that you should have no trouble bringing everything along with you, especially considering the fact that the exterior storage is lit by LEDs and there are even some pass-through storage options.

Given the wide variety of floor plans and the fact that it is easy for you to drive around, the Wolf Pup is a great choice for those of you starting off on your RV journey, but aren’t quite sure that you can downsize enough. There’s a lot to love with this particular RV, but make sure the price works well for what you are getting in return.

Most Luxurious: Airstream Caravel

  • Stunning both inside and out
  • Compact and lightweight
  • Capable of off-grid camping with ease
  • High purchase price and no bunk beds

If you aren’t particularly worried about your budget, then the Airstream Caravel may be a great choice for your family of four. Starting at $74k, this is certainly the most expensive travel trailer on our list so far, but there’s a lot to love about this RV. Let’s take a look at why this iconic Airstream made our list of the best small campers for a family of four.

Ranging in length from 16 feet to 22 feet, the Caravel is compact and sleeps four across all of its four floor plans. However, there are no bunk bed models, which means that your children will have to share a convertible dinette sleeping area. This may not be ideal for everyone, especially those of you with older kids. Keep this in mind as you shop!

Despite not offering bunk beds, the floor plans on this particular RV are fantastic and lovely. Airstream travel trailers are typically expensive because of their interior design and thoughtful touches, bringing a sense of contemporary luxury to any camping adventure.

You have everything you need in this RV, including a modern kitchen and bathroom. The Furnishings are comfortable and cozy, with just enough luxury to make you feel special. You won’t want for anything in an Airstream, but be prepared to pay for that initial upfront cost!

The Caravel isn’t just a pretty face, however. It has a lot to offer in terms of its storage, off-grid capabilities, and comfortability for your family of four. While it may be compact and expensive, this is definitely a choice for those of you seeking something that stands out, as well as provide you with everything you might need!

Best for Families with Pets: Starcraft RV Super Lite Maxx

  • All floor plans under 23 ft long

No matter the links, all of the floor plans for the Super Lite Maxx are under 5,000 pounds, making it easy to tow and maintain. Speaking of easy to maintain, the interior design on this RV is perfect for kids and pets, given that it is easy to clean and durable.

This isn’t to say that the interior design is boring on this particular RV. Far from it, as it feels comfortable and modern, with black cabinetry and upholstery. Plus, you can get this rig outfitted with solar and tank heaters so that you can keep the camping season going for extra months!

So, what’s the catch? This particular compact RV starts at $30k, which may be a bit high for some of your budgets, especially if you are seeking one of the more complicated and expensive floor plans. However, this option is great for a family of four, especially if you are looking for something compact!

Four-Season Ready: Cruiser RV Hitch

  • Plenty of room for the whole family
  • All floor plans under 4,000 pounds and 23 ft
  • All terrain tires and heated holding tanks
  • Not very many customizable options

If having the ability to Camp all year long is something of interest to you, you may need to look for some type of RVs that are 4 season ready or equipped with more insulation than others. The Hitch model from Cruiser RV is ideal for those of you seeking the ability to camp in frigid temperatures or extremely hot weather. Let’s take a look!

Starting at $36k, the Hitch isn’t an inexpensive travel trailer, especially when you consider its size. It has four floor plans currently, all of which are capable of sleeping a family of four, and there are at least two different bunkhouse models. Plus, all of these floor plans are under 23 feet long, making them an ideal size.

This travel trailer is made with Azdel and aluminum, making it lightweight. All models are under 4,000 poun ds, which means this RV is easy to drive and tow wherever the journey takes you. While the Hitch could be more customizable for the average RV or, there’s a lot to love about this compact camper. You can definitely sleep your family of four, and you can camp year-round with ease!

Best for Boondocking: Coachmen Catalina Expedition

  • Lift kits and all-terrain tires to get you where you need to go
  • Solar panels and system come standard

  • May need to add more features to get everything you want

Just over 21 feet long, The Coachmen Catalina Expedition is a fantastic travel trailer for those of you seeking something compact for boondocking. Not only are the solar capabilities of this RV outstanding, but it is also equipped to handle multiple terrains. Let’s take a closer look at it now.

Budget-friendly and well-equipped, the Catalina Expedition is great for the small family of 4, especially those of you looking forward to boondocking and getting off the beaten path. You have a powerful solar setup and a 3-inch lift kit, all included in the standard purchase price.

This is likely a relief for those of you not hoping to spend a lot of time setting up your RV before camping.

Best Small Travel Trailers for Full-Time Living for a Single Person or Couples

  • Terra Rover Travel Trailer by inTech: Best Small Camper to Live in 4-Season
  • Alta LE 1600MRB: Small Travel Trailer by East and West RV

Terra Rover 4-Season Travel Trailer for Full-Time Living

inTech Terra Rover Travel Trailer, available in the USA and Canada, is a lightweight fantastic trailer for single people and couples pursuing full-time camper living during the 4-seasons.

The main difference between Terra Rover and the rest of the travel trailers suggested in this article is the structure, materials, exquisite interior design, and how well-prepared this travel trailer is for a 4-season full-time living.

Buying a four-season-ready RV for full-time living offers numerous advantages, such as making it possible (and easy) to live safely and comfortably during severe weather. Foremost, it reduces energy consumption and provides cost-effective insulation. Also, it offers flexible living arrangements and the freedom to move and explore different places; because one may live off-grid and reduce dependency on outside resources, it fosters a sense of self-sufficiency and self-reliance. Last but not least, it provides a distinctive and exciting living experience, with chances to explore nature and lead a more eco-friendly and sustainable existence. Definitely, Terra Rover Tby inTech is one of the best campers to live in cold weather .

Even though this travel trailer is meant for 4 people, I would recommend the inTech Rover as one of the best travel trailers for single people or couples for full-time living and establishing their workstation in the front 93″ x 48″ dinette.

Terra Rover 4-Season Travel Trailer for Full-Time Living

Unlike most RVs, the Terra Rover features a bathroom and shower in separate cubicles with its own ventilation. With no slides-out, it’s spacious enough for 1 or 2 people and even the company of your four-legged friend. And at the same time, the dinette can easily be converted into a guest room. With an indoor and outdoor kitchen, it allows you to enjoy your meals and cook in comfort.

Good materials and furniture finishes. Excellent quality and customer service. Lightweight (GVWR 7,500 lbs.) and durable due to the structure and high-quality materials used.

fiberglass Travel Trailer review canada 2023

The capacity of the tanks is adequate for the number of people proposed in this review (fresh water tank of 44 gallons, gray water tank of 39 gallons, black water tank of 39 gallons).

Another advantage that allows full-time living independent of external temperature is that it has a furnace, air-conditioning, water heater, heated underbelly, etc. You get into a Terra Rover and never get out again! Here are some details of the specifications, furnace of 25K BTU, A/C of 15K BTU ducted, water heater of 6 gallons (electric or gas), insulation bubble foil in walls and ceiling, tank insulation heated underbelly, 12v line heaters, tank heat pads, etc.

As if that wasn’t enough, you enjoy a genuine 60″ x 80″ queen size bed in the bedroom, with storage space.

If all this hasn’t convinced you or if this RV brand is new to you, I recommend you watch this video to learn more about the Rover Terra travel trailer by inTech and its possibilities as a 4-season trailer for full-time living.

The only disadvantage I will mention, but I must clarify that it is not necessarily a disadvantage for all RVers who plan to live full time in a camper, is that it is unprepared for a washer and dryer. You will hardly find available space on the floor plan for its installation.

What Travel Trailers to Avoid for Full-Time Living and Why

Here are the campers to avoid for live in full-time.

Alpha Wolf Floor plans are not recommended for full-time living but are great for traveling.

Although the Cherokee Alpha Wolf line offers excellent value for the price, they are spacious, well-finished, and often our recommended floor plans. In this case, we believe they are not the Forest River floor plans we would recommend for families with children who choose to live full-time in a travel trailer.

Certain features are recommended for full-time living in a travel trailer; an entertainment center in the bunkhouse is essential and gives parents significant advantages in separating activities and privacy. Also, we mentioned earlier how important it is for the booth dinette to provide the right size for the number of people in the RV.

For example, the 2023 Cherokee Alpha Wolf 30RDB-L has two bunk beds in a bunk room. However, no entertainment center is located inside the bunk room. The Alpha Wolf 30DBH-L has the same issue. So, you will need to jump to the floor plan of Alpha Wolf 33BH-L, which includes the entertainment center appreciated when living full-time in a travel trailer with kids. However, in this model, the dinette is short-sized for only four people.

Don’t get me wrong. Alpha Wolf travel trailers are great for vacation. They are a good choice in other circumstances but not recommended for full-time living.

According to owners, Winnebago Travel Trailers are not recommended for full-time living.

It is expensive, common, and without any of the features necessary for comfortable RV living. Many RVers may have decided on this camper to establish their full-time lifestyle. But if you have the budget, go for other models and floor plans that offer what will be a priority for camper living.

Airstream Travel Trailers: Lack of Comfort for Families

Users after RV renting manifest Airstream Travel Trailers are too expensive without any comfort for a family. You pay for excellent design (if you like something super retro) and the publicity Airstream spends to appear in Hollywood in every movie they can. But you don’t pay for comfort, versatility, and high quality of life. It makes sense because they are not designed for full-time living.

We recently had our chance to rent an Airstream Classic 33FB for a week, a very long 33+ feet and a heavy 10,000 pounds.  Even for a couple like us, with no grandchildren to accompany us on this occasion, both of us working sporadically on our laptops, the cramped interior was tedious. It is impossible to prepare anything other than a simple meal because the lack of space is appalling. The absence of slides-out worsens the circulation, and we are lucky to be slim. Otherwise, using the shower or even sharing the circulation in a corridor is complicated.

How expensive? For 2023, the Airstream Classic 33FB has a starting price of $206,500, and the International 30RB is $137,400, Flying Cloud® 30FB Bunk, suitable for a family with kids, has a starting price of $124,500.

Possible RV Brands to Avoid for Not a Great Customer Service

Chinook RV and Gulf Stream’s top the list of worst customer services in RVers’ forum surveys.

However, any company can change and improve in this area. A couple of years ago, Keystone RV did not offer good customer service. However, they changed radically, and today are one of the best companies with plenty of floor plans to recommend.

We hope you find this article reviewing the 12 Best Travel Trailers for Full-Time Living handy to learn more about the critical decision you are about to take.

12 Best 4 Season Travel Trailer Brands for 2024

4 Season Travel Trailer Brands

4 season travel trailers are a good option for those who are interested in bringing their trailer out during the winter. But which are the best 4 season travel trailer brands?

Four-season travel trailers, also known as all-season travel trailers, generally have better insulation and are all around better prepared for winter than other travel trailers. Therefore, if you are interested in RV camping in the winter, you will want to purchase a 4 season travel trailer.

When you start to look for the best travel trailer for you, you might not know where to start. The first thing you should do is figure out what the best brands are.

This way you can narrow your search so that you only need to look at a few brands. Luckily, there are a few brands that stand out from the rest as four-season travel trailer sellers.

When you decide to purchase a travel trailer, you are making a big financial commitment. Travel trailers, RVs, and campers are expensive and as a result, you need to do a lot of research so that you make the right purchase.

What Makes a Travel Trailer 4 Season?

When you are searching for a 4 season travel trailer, you are looking for a trailer that can be used no matter the weather. As a result, you need a trailer that you can live in when it is extremely cold and extremely hot. So, you need a trailer that has features that make the living area livable.

Some features that are extremely important in a 4 season travel trailer are insulation, heating, and cooling systems.

Insulation makes it so it is difficult for air from the outside to get into the trailer and it is difficult for air inside to get out. The only way air should be able to leave or enter the trailer is through ventilation. However, with the ventilation system, the temperature is regulated so that you do not need to deal with extremely hot or cold air.

Ever wonder what’s in an Arctic package? Check out our article called What’s Included in an RV Arctic Package? to find out all the details!

Tips for RV Camping in Freezing Temperatures

Here we will give you a few tips on how to improve your camping experience when it is extremely cold outside.

1. Install and Upgrade Your RV Insulation

Insulation is the most important thing for winter campers. It makes it so your trailer stays warm even when it is extremely cold outside. Without insulation, you will have several very cold nights.

To improve your camper’s insulation , you can do things like seal your windows and doors so that no cold air seeps in through the cracks. You can also install window covering to help insulate your windows. Windows are one of the most difficult places in the trailer to insulate, so it is where you should put the most effort.

2. Install RV Skirting

A great way to keep your camper warmer while camping in freezing temperatures is to add skirting around your travel trailer. Skirting helps to shield the underside of your camper from wind and cold air thereby keeping your tanks, pipes, and even the inside of your RV warmer.

We tried a great product called AirSkirts on our RV and even temperature-tested it! Check out the video below or see our article called AirSkirt Inflatable RV Skirting for Winter and Summer to see why we love AirSkirts and highly recommend them to our readers.

2. Protect Your Plumbing

The last thing you want is to have your plumbing pipes and or tanks freeze while you are in the middle of nowhere on a camping trip. When water freezes it expands which means there is a big risk of pipes cracking and bursting.

So, you need to protect your plumbing before any issues arise. You can do this by putting heat tape on your pipes and hoses.

You can also add a small amount of antifreeze to your holding tanks so that they do not freeze. However, you want to make sure that you do not add too much because that can cause issues as well.

3. Watch Out for Black Ice

Even once you have winterized your travel trailer, you are not completely out of the woods. The winter is one of the most dangerous times to be driving and snow and black ice are two of the biggest reasons for that.

If you do not know, black ice is ice that you cannot see because it blends in with concrete. This type of ice is one of the biggest causes of car crashes during the winter, so you need to be careful while you are on the road.

Check out our article called How to Drive Your RV in the Snow for some really helpful tips! It is especially important to be careful when you are driving with a travel trailer. The larger the vehicle you have, the less control you have over it.

This means that it is a lot easier to lose control of your vehicle, and harder to get it back under control once you lose it. So, you need to be extra careful when driving to avoid crashes.

4. Purchase a Space Heater

Mr-Buddy-Portable-Heater-in-RVBlogger-RV

A lot of people will not do anything to improve their experience once their trailer is fully insulated and their plumbing is protected. However, there are still things you can do to improve your quality of life.

For example, when you are outside your trailer you probably will not have a lot of your electrical equipment on. That sometimes will include your heating system.

So, when you get back to your trailer at the end of the day you will need to heat up your trailer. However, heating systems can take a while to heat a trailer. If you purchase a space heater, it will accelerate the speed at which your trailer heats up which is very nice. We love our Mr. Buddy space heater ! It keeps us and the RV nice and toasty!

5. Inspect Your Furnace Before Leaving

Your furnace is going to have a heavy workload while you are on your winter camping trip. So, it is very important to make sure that it is working properly before you leave.

If you want to inspect it yourself, you should check to make sure that there are not any obstructions that could limit airflow. You should also consider purchasing a dehumidifier to ensure that moisture does not get into your furnace.

Condensation can cause corrosion in your furnace, engine, and pipes. This can cause serious issues, so it is better to play it safe and get a dehumidifier.

Final Words About 4 Season Travel Trailer Brands

After reading, we hope you have all the information you need to purchase the best 4 season travel trailer for you. We know that there is a lot of information to absorb, but it is important to be thorough when you are thinking of making a significant purchase like a travel trailer.

The last thing you want to do is wrap up a lot of money on a travel trailer only to find out that it does not fit your needs. It is better to do your research now and ensure that you have the right fit for the trips you want to take.

When looking for a 4 season travel trailer it is important to find one that has amazing insulation. Insulation is the most important thing for a trailer to be functional in the winter. Without insulation, you will have some very cold nights. You should also look for a trailer with a high-quality furnace.

Many travel trailer brands offer winter packages that you can add on to all or some of their trailers. These packages are usually good options, but it is important to remember that they do not always offer them for all trailers.

So, you need to be aware of that when making your purchase. That being said, as long as you do your research you should be able to find the perfect 4 season travel trailer for you in no time.

We just bought a Northwood Arctic Fox 25Y after a nasty Aspen Trail. Love our new trailer. Even sitting in our back yard with well below freezing temps, it is still at least 20-30 degrees warming inside with no heat on than the Aspen Trail.

In the Lance review you wrote: They produce trailers that will keep you warm in the extreme heat and in the cold. *Is this correct? Thank you

I would stack up my Big Foot 25B25RQ against any of these as a four season trailer.

great infomation I need to find a low cost RV to live in with two beds

The hallmark of a true 4 season travel trailer is that the waste gates are enclosed in the heated underbelly. Some of the trailers on your list have this feature; others do not. The photo of the underside of the Dutchmen shows how the entire length of the waste line is exposed. There is no way that aftermarket heat tape would turn this unit into a 4 season camper. A brand not on your list whose trailers and 5th wheels are all 4 season is Grand Design. They are also lighter and less expensive than the better known brands like Outdoors RV and Arctic Fox.

Thanks for the good information regarding your recommended travel trailers. Very helpful since we will be in the market at the end of the year.

An important factor to consider when you’re in the market for an RV is to look at the weight. Why we recommend the Flagstaff E-Pro travel trailer: Akin to its Rockwood cousin, the Flagstaff E-Pro travel trailer by Forest River has an under 1800 lbs floorplan that’s so lightweight that it might as well be considered as a popup camper. The Flagstaff E-Pro 12RK is the one we’re talking about, that’s 11 feet long and sleeps 2 people.

There’s a different set of features provided for the Flagstaff E-Pro 12RK and every other floorplan, but the common ones include outside speakers, Wi-Fi range booster, microwave oven and coleman stove/grill combo among many others. The aforementioned floorplan can also be made better by adding rack mounting bars, 13,500 BTU AC, a 22-inch TV with DVD player and a few others. Hence, it goes without saying that you’re definitely picked the right choice if you prefer the Flagstaff E-Pro as your choice of a towable camper.

2024 Forest River Timberwolf 16ML: A Must-See RV with Loft

lightest 4 person travel trailer

Introduced in 2024 to the Forest River destination trailer lineup as a mini loft travel trailer, the Timberwolf 16ML quickly made a big impression with its hybrid design and visual curb appeal. Far shorter than most destination trailers and featuring a unique loft and patio, the 16ML combines the interior height and spaciousness of a destination trailer with some of the size and towability benefits of a traditional travel trailer. At less than 30 feet, it foreseeably fits into most standard-sized campsites, though height clearance may be an issue. Its main attractions include dual lofts, a covered patio, and an impressive array of appliances included with the limited package, such as a dishwasher and a combination washer/dryer. As 2024 was the first model year of the 16ML, it underwent a few changes and updates in the first year, so buyers may see first and second-generation iterations with moderate differences.

RV News awarded the 16ML the 2024 Hybrid Destination Trailer of the Year, and, given its novelty, it has received wide publicity across the industry. But does this unique travel trailer and destination trailer combo pay off in the end? Let’s explore what to expect from the 2024 Forest River Timberwolf 16ML.

  • Length: 27’9”
  • Exterior Height: 13’6”
  • GVWR: 11,240 pounds
  • UVW: 7,109 pounds
  • CCC: 4,131 pounds

The Timberwolf 16ML poses a bit of a conundrum for towing. While the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of just over 7,000 pounds is manageable by a range of half-ton trucks, the square shape and taller height pose additional considerations regarding aerodynamics, fuel efficiency, and wind resistance. A three-quarter-ton truck will be your best bet here. If you are crunching the numbers to determine if your vehicle can handle towing this RV, err on the side of caution.

The 16ML mini loft’s exterior height is among the tallest RVs on the road and at the campsite. When determining your route, you will need the same precautions regarding low bridges and other clearances as you would with a tall fifth wheel trailer.   The Timberwolf 16ML is certainly more towable than a traditional destination trailer. However, the appeal of this RV is its short size and interior comforts, not necessarily its towability. Towing the 16ML will still lower your MPG and may require some white-knuckling in windy conditions. Include the cost of an appropriate weight distribution trailer hitch with sway control in your overall budget.

Interior Comfort & Functionality

lightest 4 person travel trailer

Upon entry, tall ceilings immediately distinguish the 2024 Forest River Timberwolf 16ML from similarly-sized travel trailers. The destination trailer frame allows for the unique loft features in the front and back and the panoramic windows reminiscent of larger destination trailers . Unlike other destination trailers, the 16ML is only rated to sleep three—though a fourth is likely possible. Two sleep in the upstairs queen bed loft, while one sleeps on the convertible sofa. You might also repurpose the rear second loft for sleeping or storage. For those looking for an RV to host a big crew, the 16ML may not be the best option.

While the dual lofts, patio, and front living area are eye-catchers, the kitchen and rear bathroom are the workhorses of this RV. The symmetrical kitchen layout is simple and functional: cooking and undermount sink on one side, and the refrigerator and additional appliances on the other, including the washer/dryer combo and a dishwasher. A pocket door grants access to the rear bathroom with a spacious shower and generous linen storage.

Additional interior features include:

  • On-Demand Tankless Water Heater
  • Supersized Central Air Conditioner with Quick Cool Dumps
  • Electric Fireplace in the Upstairs Loft

The difficulty of towing and the available sleeping capacity of the 16ML make this RV great for couples looking to spend extended time at one location, whether for work, vacation, or full-time living. The 16ML is frequently compared to a tiny home—with obvious visual similarities. But buyers must remember that this is still technically a travel trailer, and the manufacturer does not rate it for four seasons.

To get a better idea of the interior design, check out Trish’s walkthrough below:

Exterior Features & Storage

The 16ML’s rear patio, equipped with a sliding glass entry door, will certainly draw onlookers. The patio’s built-in frame and fixed hardware draw comparisons to tiny homes. Built-in speakers and cable hookups provide outdoor entertainment on the porch, which is accessible by solid steps and offers the camper’s only entrance. This is the only entrance to the camper.

Beyond the patio, the exterior of the 16ML is defined by one key feature: large, vertical tinted windows allowing loads of natural light to pour into the loft, kitchen, and living area. The camper does not include a side awning, but it does have an LP quick connect for an outdoor grill and an outdoor shower sprayer with hot and cold water. Both are located towards the front of the trailer, away from the patio.

Notably, the 2024 Forest River Timberwolf 16ML mini loft has the second-highest cargo carrying capacity in the Timberwolf lineup. However, your cargo must be stored inside the trailer, as it does not include any pass through or exterior storage compartments. With this knowledge, you may be more likely to utilize the rear half-loft for storage.

Construction

lightest 4 person travel trailer

The 16ML is one of two models in Forest River’s 2024 Timberwolf lineup classified as mini loft travel trailers. These trailers do not include slide-outs like the other destination trailers in the Timberwolf lineup . This may reduce the likelihood of mechanical issues and allow for more frequent towing and travel, but you sacrifice some of the space offered by destination trailers with slide-outs.

Quick-drop stabilizer jacks are located in the trailer’s four corners, offering added stability when walking around inside and on the patio. The 16ML also includes protective metal diamond plating at the base of the front cap to protect from road debris during travel. This dual-axle trailer also comes with aluminum rims for the tires, and some generations have included knobbier, all-terrain-style tires, though this RV is not designed for significant off-road towing. The 16ML is not rated for four seasons, but it does include an enclosed underbelly.

We’ve listed the tank capacities for the 16ML below. These sizes are manageable for two to three people staying in this camper but bear in mind the washer/dryer combo may put additional strain on your tank capacities.

Additional Specs

  • Fresh Water : 40 Gal
  • Gray Water: 40 Gal
  • Black Water: 40 Gal

Pricing & Alternates

lightest 4 person travel trailer

Given the uniqueness of the floorplan and its interior space, you may be surprised by its affordability. Just keep in mind that it is not necessarily designed for frequent travel. For most, it will function more like a destination trailer, ideally suited to long-term stays with seasonal moves or permanent campsites for full-time RV living.

The 16ML Timberwolf is in a class of its own, and the only other RV in Forest River’s category of mini lofts is the slide-less, 36-foot Timberwolf 200G destination trailer designed for far more guests. Outside of the Forest River umbrella, consider some of the Timberwolf 16ML’s rival RVs:
