New Lancashire Police Museum Set to Open its Doors to the Public

Members of the public will be able to find out more about the history of policing in Lancashire when the new Lancashire Police Museum officially opens to the public early next month.

The new museum, housed in a former prison wing at the historic Lancaster Castle, is a partnership between Lancashire Constabulary, the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner and the Duchy of Lancaster.

Invited guests will enjoy a preview this week – Thursday 26 May – before the museum opens its doors to the general public on 9 June.

lancashire police school visits

The museum features 16 fascinating exhibits each housed within a prison cell. Displays detail the history of Lancashire Constabulary, Police training, forensic development – including how some very famous local cases were solved – and an overview of some of the different police departments including the mounted branch, dog unit, underwater search unit and firearms.

There is also a mock custody suite with interactive exhibits, an area for children to try on uniforms and an area dedicated to modern day policing with information about opportunities to join the police either as a cadet, volunteer, police staff member or police officer.

The museum will be free to enter and open on Thursdays and Fridays from 10.30 to 4pm initially, with staffing by volunteers.

Lancashire’s Police and Crime Commissioner Andrew Snowden said: “This Museum is an excellent resource for the county and provides the opportunity to educate people on how policing has changed, to learn more about their local police force and the challenges of policing today, as well as discovering more about its rich and proud history.

“The history of the building itself is truly fascinating and along with the vast array of exhibits, each with their own poignant story, it’s not to be missed.”

Assistant Chief Constable Ian Dawson said: “We are tremendously proud of our history and as such, thrilled to be opening this new museum in partnership with the Duchy of Lancaster and PCC.

“It is important that we celebrate our history and provide the public with an opportunity to find out more about policing in Lancashire. The new Museum will give us a fabulous space in which we can do this by illustrating the work we’ve done and continue to do to keep our local communities safe.

“As well as the main exhibitions, in the future we will be offering talks and presentations in the museum with visitors from experts in different areas of policing. We also hope to be able to host school visits, so perhaps we’ll also inspire future generations to join our ranks.”

He concluded: “The Museum has been in the works for a number of years, and I would like to thank the Duchy and all those involved – most of them volunteers who have given up their time for free – for their support in offering us this opportunity and supporting the Museum’s development.”

Anyone wishing to visit the museum can find out more on at [email protected] . You can also find out more about the Police Museum at www.lancashirepolicemuseum.co.uk or on Facebook and Instagram.

Lancashire Police Museum celebrates 40,000th visitor and 2nd anniversary

Lancashire Police Museum has celebrated its second anniversary and 40,000th visitor, Michel Alberio from Zug in Switzerland.

The Museum, housed within a former prison wing at Lancaster Castle, was launched in May 2022 and has since gone from strength to strength.

It has been shortlisted for two prestigious local visitor awards, hosted Royal visitors and this week welcomed its 40,000th visitor, who was presented with a LANPAC crime prevention goody bag by special guests Chief Constable Sasha Hatchett and the Lord Lieutenant of Lancashire, Amanda Parker.

“We’ve had thousands of walk-in visitors, but we’ve also welcomed hundreds of school, college and university students on organised tours. We’ve also welcomed people to special events during the school holidays and specialist talks by serving and retired police officers. “It’s been great to share with them our fabulous history but also talk to people about the challenges of present-day policing as well as current career opportunities, of which there are many.” Sabine Skae, Museum Co-ordinator.

The Museum boasts 16 fascinating exhibits detailing the history of Lancashire police.

Visitors can learn about Police training, forensic development and recruitment and enjoy interactive displays on crime and custody as well as the opportunity to see what they’d look like in Police uniform.

Free to enter, the Museum is open on Thursdays and Fridays from 10.30 to 12.30 and 1.30-4pm, with some extra days during school holidays. It is staffed by volunteers.

“The museum is an excellent resource for us, providing an opportunity to educate people on how policing has changed, to learn more about their local police force and to illustrate the challenges of policing today. “With more exhibits to be added over the year ahead and the fascinating history of the building itself, I’d encourage anyone to come and visit the museum in beautiful Lancaster.” Sacha Hatchett, Chief Constable.

Man who disrupted Wisconsin graduation told police he disliked superintendent, police report says

The man who disrupted a Wisconsin high school graduation when he stormed the stage and blocked the superintendent from shaking hands with his daughter said he disliked the administrator and wanted to prevent him “from having the satisfaction” of shaking her hand, according to a police report.

Matthew Eddy spoke to police at Baraboo High School last Friday night after he walked up to Baraboo Superintendent Rainey Briggs at the high school graduation and moved him out of a line of administrators greeting graduates as they received their diplomas that evening, police said.

Rainey Briggs, left, is pushed away from the stage by Matthew Eddy.

Eddy said he and his daughter had “past issues” with Briggs and dislike him, according to a police report.

The incident report has provided the only public insight into a possible motive. Eddy has not returned repeated requests for comment this week. Reached by phone on Friday, Briggs declined to answer questions. Neither of them has spoken out publicly about the matter.

A school resource officer who spoke to Eddy said in the report that, although he acknowledged going on stage to prevent Briggs from shaking hands with his daughter, Eddy “did not necessarily state how he physically prevented” them from interacting and “was vague” in response to questions. The school officer also said that he told Eddy that what he had done was unacceptable and could have been handled in a more appropriate way.

“Matthew was explained that what he did disrupted graduation for everyone and likely brought unnecessary attention toward” his daughter, the police report states.

When asked whether he was remorseful for his actions, the report states Eddy told the officer he was, but only for his daughter’s sake, leading the officer to conclude “this may have been something that he had pre-planned to do.”

The police report says Briggs left school grounds immediately after the graduation ceremony.

The school resource officer spoke to Briggs by phone on Monday and said in the report that the superintendent said he did not know who Eddy was when Eddy approached him. Briggs told the officer that Eddy’s daughter was at one point expelled from the school, according to the report, but that he does not directly interact with parents regarding expulsions and could not recall any other interactions he had with Eddy nor any reason why Eddy reacted the way he did.

Briggs also told the officer that he planned to obtain a restraining order against Eddy , which he was granted this week. In the temporary order filed Monday in Dane County Circuit Court, Eddy was instructed not to have any contact with Briggs. A hearing is scheduled for June 14.

In his petition for the order, Briggs says Eddy “approached the stage quickly and put both of his hands on me to push me out of the way stating ‘you are not going to touch my f------ daughter.’” Briggs said he then “created space” and told Eddy to get his hands off him, the petition states. Briggs says Eddy began to “push and pry” at him and that he put his hands out to keep Eddy away, according to the petition.

Briggs told an officer, according to the report, that Eddy’s behavior “caused him fear” because it followed “numerous threats” he has received as superintendent. The report does not elaborate on those threats.

Video of Eddy approaching Briggs has been widely shared online. Though four school board members and the school’s principal also were on stage, Eddy confronted only Briggs.

The school district has said it is taking the “unfortunate event” seriously and working closely with local law enforcement to ensure a thorough investigation.

The Baraboo School Board said in a statement that it does not condone “engaging in threatening, intimidating, or physically harming behaviors against anyone in our School District community.”

“That this adult felt emboldened to behave in this way in front of hundreds of students and other adults should deeply trouble us all; this type of behavior will not be tolerated,” the school board said, adding that it “condemns such actions and asks the community to take a stand and speak out against this type of behavior that threatens the fabric of our democracy.”

Baraboo is 40 miles northwest of Madison and has a population of less than 13,000. The population is 90.4% white, according to the most recent census data.

Vice president harris makes surprise visit to ypsilanti bookstore.

Jacqueline Francis , Reporter

YPSILANTI, Mich. – Vice President Kamala Harris and actress Octavia Spencer made a surprise visit Saturday to a Black-owned bookstore in Ypsilanti.

Black Stone Bookstore’s clerk Asale Kimada was stocking shelves when Secret Service agents entered the store and told her Vice President Harris was on her way for a visit.

“I tell everyone that comes to this bookstore that it’s special and it never fails,” Kimada said through tears.

As Secret Service agents did their security sweep ahead of Harris’ arrival, Kimada called the store’s owner and told him to come right away.

“I dropped everything,” store owner Carlos Franklin said.

Shortly after Franklin arrived with his wife and daughter, Harris’ motorcade pulled up.

Harris greeted Franklin and Kimada, introducing them to Spencer.

The group chatted about the store’s roots and its impact on the community.

“I was telling her just about my dream to make this an even bigger spot and just do more in the community,” Franklin said. “She was very positive and understood my insight.”

Franklin and Harris bonded over a shared love of chess.

Harris talked about learning the game from her uncle as Franklin shared his memories of teaching his daughters how to play.

From the bookstore, Harris and Spencer traveled to Detroit where they spoke at the Michigan Democratic Party’s annual Legacy Dinner at Huntington Place.

15-year-old attempted to sexually assault 2 girls at Central NY high school, police say

F ulton, N.Y. — A 15-year-old boy was recently arrested after he admitted to attempting to sexually touch and assault two girls only hours apart in May at his high school, police said Tuesday.

A school resource officer at G. Ray Bodley High School informed the Fulton police of the sex offenses on May 13 when they occurred, said Sgt. Lucas Hollenbeck, a spokesperson for the Fulton Police. The boy was arraigned in Oswego County Family Court on May 31.

Based on police investigation, Hollenback said Tuesday that on the morning of May 13 the boy forcibly touched a 15-year-old female student during class.

Shortly before 1 p.m., Hollenback said the boy also brought a 16-year-old girl inside a small room in the area of school’s gym locker rooms. He attempted to sexually assault her in the area where there was no security camera, he said.

Both incidents were reported, and statements were taken from the victims, he said.

The boy was later interviewed and admitted to his actions, he said.

The boy was charged with forcible touching, endangering the welfare of a child for the first incident. He was charged with attempted criminal sex act in the first degree, unlawful imprisonment, endangering the welfare of a child, and harassment for the second incident.
