Great Lakes Cruises

On our unique Great Lakes tour boats, you will traverse great depths, watch the sun rise and set over distant horizons and learn compelling details about the region — both on- and offshore. Along the way, enjoy stops at local wineries, historic lighthouses, museums, aquariums, renowned restaurants and so much more! Niagara Great Lakes Cruise As you’ll discover when you click on the individual Great Lakes cruises listed below, each and every one of our trips has something to write home about.

With our Niagara and the Great Lakes trip , for example, you can write about the sheer volume of water cascading over the world-famous Niagara Falls. (For the record, more than 3,000 tons of water cascade over the falls every second!) The roar can be heard for miles, and you’ll have a front-row seat to this magnificent natural wonder.

Or a bird’s eye view if you opt for the helicopter .

And that’s just the beginning! What follows is a trip that comprises eight days and seven nights of splendor aboard the sleek, modern Viking Octantis . Your cross-two-countries trip will include visits to Point Pelee, Ontario, Detroit, Michigan, the Thunder Bay National Maritime Sanctuary, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where you’ll disembark.

Intrigued? There’s more where that trip came from. USA River Cruises offers a multitude of Great Lakes cruises — something for every taste. Chicago to New York City Great Lakes Cruise Our Great American Waterways: Chicago to NYC trip is a case in point. Onboard the Grand Caribe , which was refurbished in 2009 and carries 84 passengers, you’ll have a grand time cruising across several great lakes. Starting in the Windy City, you’ll traverse Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Erie, and Lake Ontario. You’ll even get a taste of life on the famous Erie Canal and the Hudson River as you wind your way toward the Atlantic Ocean.

This cruise takes its time: 16 days and 15 nights, to be exact. With scenery that rivals any in North America, you’ll see vast cityscapes and picturesque villages in abundance.

Stops include Manitowoc, Wisconsin, Mackinac Island, Michigan, where horse-drawn carriages are likely the only traffic you’ll see, and Cleveland, Ohio, home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The itinerary also includes Buffalo, New York, Rochester, New York, and finally New York City. We promise you’ll be a changed person once you disembark in the Big Apple. Seeing the country from a USA River Cruise is a special kind of experience, after all. USA River Cruises: Great Lakes Cruises That’s just two of our exciting cruises. There’s so much to explore, and we try to design cruise itineraries that make time for both natural and manmade wonders.

Cruise the Great Lakes

The Waters of the Great Lakes

The Great Lakes stand alone in their majesty as the largest group of freshwater lakes on Earth. With nearly 1000,000 square miles of endless waters expanding 10,000 miles of shoreline from towering pine forests, expansive rolling dunes and spellbinding sandstone cliffs to historical villages and cultural epicenters, the lakes have inspired humankind for centuries.

Essential Great Lakes

They represent another American dream. A cruise on the Great American Lakes is all about getting to know the two iconic countries of North America, Canada and the US, intimately. Here are the sites not to be missed during your trip to four of these lakes: Ontario, Erie, Huron and Michigan.

Essential Great Lakes

Essential Trips — The Great Lakes

In our imagination, the Great Lakes open onto infinite space. In fact, there are vast coniferous forests burnished with golden tones during the Indian summer, immense lakes interrupted by lush green islands and bays of turquoise water, rivers becoming torrential waterfalls... Before leaving for these legendary lands, here is some useful information .

Look over Niagara Falls

They are certainly the iconic site of this Great American Lake region . With a flow rate of 2,800 m3, the Niagara Falls are imposing in all their splendour. From Table Rock, a guided walk allows you to follow the crest of the Horseshoe Falls , one of the waterfalls that make up Niagara.

Discover the exciting life of Toronto — Canada

Discover the exciting life of Toronto — Canada

Toronto proudly sits on the banks of Lake Ontario. Canada's largest city knows how to draw travellers into its beating heart. With its lively streets, its different quarters with varied cultural influences , such as the Chinese and Polish quarters, Little India and Portugal Village, bars, restaurants and shops of all kinds elicit charm. To end this beautiful visit, climb to the top of the CN Tower and enjoy a 360° view over the city.

Stroll in Quebec — Canada

Stroll in Quebec — Canada

There is a particular pleasure to strolling in Quebec . The old fortified town is full of historic buildings such as the Château Frontenac and the imposing Citadelle. Wander through the paved streets of the Petit-Champlain quarter edged with bistros and restaurants, walk along the banks of the Saint Lawrence River, or cross the suspension bridge above Montmorency Falls at 83 metres high.

Cross the Welland Canal and the Port Colborne Lock

Cross the Welland Canal and the Port Colborne Lock

Less well-known than Panama, Suez and Corinth Canals, the Welland Canal is no less than a jewel of engineering. 42-km long and punctuated by eight locks, it links Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. Sailing down this canal takes an even more impressive turn at Port Colborne where there is one of the longest locks in the world at 420 metres.

Arrêter le temps sur l’Île Flowerpot - Canada

top at Flowerpot Island — Canada

Among the 30,000 islands making up Georgian Bay, Flowerpot Island is certainly one of the most extraordinary. It is part of the Fathom Five National Marine Park. The island gets its name and its reputation from two rock formations in the shape of a flower pot that stand over the crystal clear waters. However, people come here more for hiking trails leading to the lighthouse, allowing them to discover rare flora , and for swimming. The water is cold, the bed rocky and steep.

Survoler la baie Georgienne en hélicoptère - Canada

Fly over Georgian Bay by helicopter — Canada

You might think that you're in the Mediterranean, but the coniferous forest edging the cliffs that fall into turquoise waters remind you that you're in Canada. On the northeast branch of Lake Huron, Georgian Bay has the clearest waters of the Great Lakes . To admire these incredible landscapes, nothing is better than a helicopter tour . Isolated creeks with sheer drops, lush vegetation clothed with golden tones in autumn... the scenery is exceptional!

Horse riding in Honora Bay — Canada

Horse riding in Honora Bay — Canada

At the north of Georgian Bay, in Honora Bay, Manitoulin Island is a real delight with its tree-filled landscapes, waterfalls, calm waters and houses edging the lake. Choosing to roam through this landscape on horseback is about getting off the beaten track, through forests, fields and over hills, meandering along the Niagara, with a stunning view over the La Cloche Mountains. It's also the opportunity to see white-tailed deer, foxes, hares and even bald eagles.

Myths & legends

Although dream-catchers have a more decorative function today, they have a real significance for the Ojibwes from the Lake Huron region. Legend has it that the first dream-catcher was woven by a spider, the reincarnation of a young boy's grandmother whose tribe suffered from famine following a curse struck by an evil spirit. Hung at the entrance of his house, it filtered out the nightmares, allowing only good omens to pass through it. From then on, abundance returned to the village, saving the inhabitants from famine.

In the spotlight

Since the 1980s, the USA and Canada have partnered in a common effort to decontaminate the banks of the Great Lakes , especially in the most populated areas, such as Toronto. Purification plans and pollution prevention have transformed these zones from “areas unfavourable to economic growth into residential areas, which are precious economic assets”, as noted the International Association for Great Lakes Research. In a report published in August 2019, the economic benefit was calculated as more than 4 billion dollars.

Books. Sturgeon Falls (Ontario), in the 1960s. In French: Albert and Paul-André, two friends, acquire a notebook with a green canvas cover, which will become their shared diary. The two teenagers write down their feelings in it, and also their perception of a changing world. An autobiographical fiction by Gaston Trembley, Le Grand Livre traces the memories that the author has of this period of research into his own life, which provide a glimpse into the trajectories of these two future adults. With his friend, André Paiement, the author is one of the most prominent figures in Franco-Ontarian literature. Native Americans, explorers, gold hunters, immigrants, warriors, entrepreneurs... They have all made their mark on the history of the Great Lakes, inspired by the history and carried by the myths and legends. In Great Lakes Folklore: Legends of the Five Sisters, Charles Cassady, Jr. relates the most important tales.

Music. In summer and in autumn, the Native Americans organise pow wows. During these gatherings, which are open to the public, each tribe wears traditional costume and shares dances, songs, culinary specialities and crafts with each other. This is a wonderful way to discover cultures that are often little-known.

Film. Ben, a thirty-something man, is disillusioned with his work as a teacher, but his peaceful life is suddenly turned upside down with a shocking cancer diagnosis. Shaken by the news, he decides to buy a motorbike and take to the road for seven days from Toronto to Vancouver. In One Week , Michael McGowan poetically portrays the great Canadian outdoors, leaving you longing to discover it.

The Soo Locks + Sault Ste. Marie

You might wish to arise early this morning as the  mv Ocean Voyager  transits through the historic Soo Locks where freighters, barges and tugboats traverse the 21-foot drop of the St. Mary’s River between Lake Superior and Lake Huron. The first lock here was built in 1855 and the canal was navigated by 27 vessels during its first year of operation. Today, more than 10,000 ships hauling 86 million tons of cargo pass through these historic parallel locks each year, even though they’re closed during the winter when ice shuts down shipping on the upper Great Lakes!

Today you can join your fellow passengers for flexible Hop-on Hop-off touring. Exploring at your own pace, you’ll be able to visit a number of the town’s highlights including the Valley Camp Museum. Here in the enormous hold of a cargo ship that plied the Great Lakes from 1917 through 1966, you’ll find fascinating exhibits that trace the rich maritime history of the Great Lakes. If the weather is nice there is no better place to enjoy this leisurely cruise than from a seat on the upper deck of the 60 foot long ship, the Clearwater . Special note: The captain narrates the cruise and points out famous homes and summer camps from the glory days of Old Forge.

Lake George Cruise (Warren County)

"The Queen of Lakes" is a magical place to visit and a cruise on one of their three historic ships, the Minne Ha Ha, Mohican , and the Lac du Saint Sacrement, is a must. The cruise docks are located right along the walkway on the shore, near attractions, mini-golf, gift shops and ice cream stands. Special note: Admit it; you probably took these boat rides when you vacationed in Lake George as a kid. Trust me, go back now as an adult and they are still just as wonderful!

Canandaigua Lady (Ontario County)

The Lady is an exact replica of a 19th century double decker paddle wheel steamboat. The boat, painted red, white and blue brings a real sense of beauty and history to Canandaigua Lake. Overnight fire burns 15 boats at Lake Mead Boat Harbor

An early Sunday fire damaged 15 boats at Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

Smoke is seen rising from multiple boats on fire at Lake Mead Marina at Hemenway Harbor on Sund ...

Henderson resident Rusty Schaeffer stopped by the Las Vegas Boat Harbor on Sunday afternoon to check on his boat, docked just a couple of slips away from line of the boats destroyed or damaged in an early morning fire at Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

“It’s like a battlefield,” Schaeffer, 51, said of the damage left behind. “There’s like three or four boats that are still underwater that are partially sticking out. And the docks that come out of the side of boats are completely melted and, like, gone.”

The fire that started at 12:30 a.m. Sunday damaged or destroyed approximately 15 boats and caused minor injuries at the boat harbor, according to the National Park Service. The cause is still under investigation.

One person was hospitalized and another suffered minor injuries in the fire.

Dave Madden said he and his wife were about a half-mile from the harbor when he saw the flames.

“You could hear the explosions,” he said. “There was a lot of smoke and it looked like about 10 boats on fire at one point.”

Raymond Ward, 54, a Californian who has two boats moored at the harbor, said that fortunately no one was seriously hurt, but the loss of boats can have an emotional impact on owners.

“The biggest deal is that a lot of people lost stuff that they worked for, for many, many years,” Ward said. “You know what? We put our heart and soul into these things. We’re working on them every day. We’re rubbing them. We baby them. They’re our babies.”

“It’s sad to see some of these guys just lost their dreams that they’ve been building,” Ward said.

A houseboat owned by a man he knows sank after they bought it “a month and half ago and wanted to turn it into a family hideaway with his kids and stuff and it burnt to the bottom of the ground,” Ward said.

It was windy on the lake early Sunday morning and gasoline leaking from the sunken boats rose to the surface, Ward said. He said believes that the wind was out of control and fanned the flames on the water.

Ward praised the owners of the marina for helping to move and save boats that might have caught fire.

Travis Reif, 54, another Henderson resident and boat owner, said he was “pretty shocked, pretty surprised that would happen. We wouldn’t leave our boats here if we thought that could happen, right? We had our boat sitting here last night and luckily it was far enough away to be unharmed. So, very fortunate.”

Boat owner Jeff Sammons, 55, said he rushed over to the marina at 2 a.m. from his home in nearby Boulder City to get into his boat and move it in case the wind blew the fire on the water toward his boat, which was four docks away.

“That could have been much worse,” Sammons said. “It’s life, stuff happens, but I’m lucky. But it’s in the end, just property. Nobody was hurt, seriously, no fatalities. Nobody was sleeping in their boat when it happened.”

Henderson resident Derek Jensen, 46, said that he has seen some boaters drain their bilges, or excess accumulated water from the bottom of the boat, with oil mixed in that spreads across the surface of the water in the marina, creating a dangerous, flammable hazard.

“So, you’ve got to be a responsible owner,” Jensen said.

‘Never a welcome thing’

Bruce Nelson, whose family operates Lake Mead Marina next to the harbor, said he helped pull boats out of the way while fire crews worked to extinguish other boats.

“Fire is never a welcome thing,” Nelson said. “We had our own fire boat to pull out the boats that were the closest. It started on one boat and jumped to the others.”

Firefighters started arriving at the fire scene at about 1 a.m., Nelson said.

Fire crews from the Las Vegas Boat Harbor, the Las Vegas, Boulder City, Clark County and Henderson fire departments and the Bureau of Land Management had the blaze under control at about 3 a.m. and extinguished it at around 3:30 a.m., according to an email sent to boat owners by harbor boating operator Boating Lake Mead.

One boat owner was hospitalized with burn injuries and a firefighter was “checked out and released,” according to the company’s email.

“We are thankful to report that there are no known fatalities and only 2 minor injuries,” the email stated.

“Vessel damage is extensive but was limited from everyone’s quick action,” according to the email.

The I and R docks have been closed, according to the statement.

The marina is open to the public, but park officials issued a partial closure of the harbor’s R and I Docks and warned visitors to be cautious when accessing Hemenway Harbor and open portions of Las Vegas Boat Harbor because of potential safety concerns.

Coast Guard rescues 4 from disabled boat near Lake Erie island

DETROIT — U.S. Coast Guard crews in Detroit were among those who located and towed a disabled vessel in Lake Erie.

Four people were aboard the vessel, which was found 6.5 miles northeast of Kelleys Island, Ohio at approximately 4 a.m. on Thursday.

Crews from Station Marblehead and Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Trenton also assisted.

Station Marblehead launched a 45-foot rescue boat at 4:37 a.m. and located the disabled vessel at 5:10 a.m. before placing them in a tow. The vessel was then moored at Seaway Marina on Kelleys Island.

The boaters, who were uninjured, told Coast Guard personnel that they were unfamiliar with the Great Lakes and that the vessel initially became disabled around 6 p.m. the night before, but they were unable to call for assistance due to no cellphone reception.

“Thanks to the swift coordination between our command center, JRCC, and Erie County Dispatch, we were able to launch our RB-M and get on scene as quickly and safely as possible,” said U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer 1st Class Cory Nussbaum, Station Marblehead Coxswain.

“Without a marine radio, the boaters were at the mercy of their cellphone reception and were unable to contact emergency services sooner.”

The Coast Guard is reminding the public that the best way to contact help during an emergency on the water is via channel 16 on a Very High Frequency Marine Radio.

The Coast Guard also recommends having more than one form of communication when recreating on the water.

Taconite freighter safely in port in Thunder Bay after underwater collision on Lake Superior

A Canadian freighter carrying iron ore across Lake Superior was safely anchored Saturday evening in Thunder Bay, Ontario, after reportedly striking an underwater obstacle and taking on water, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

None of the 22 crew members was injured, and 11 were evacuated from the ship by the Coast Guard and a National Park Service boat from Isle Royale National Park, according to a release from Coast Guard Sector Northern Great Lakes.

Once moored in Thunder Bay, the damaged 689-foot Michipicoten will be inspected to learn what happened Saturday morning when the collision occurred and freighter began taking on water shortly before 7 a.m., about 35 miles southwest of Isle Royale in U.S. waters.

Coast Guard officials said on-board pumps drained some of the water and reduced the listing of the ship from 15 degrees to 5 degrees. The freighter was accompanied to Thunder Bay by another bulk carrier, the Edwin H. Gott, with the assistance of Coast Guard, U.S. Border Patrol and Park Service boats.

The Michipicoten left Two Harbors, Minn., bound for Thunder Bay on Friday evening with a load of taconite pellets, according to MarineTraffic.com , a ship information website.

The ship is owned by New Jersey-based Rand Logistics, which operates a fleet of Great Lakes vessels. Ten of Rand's vessels are U.S.-flagged; another six, including the Michipicoten, sail under the Canadian flag.

The ship is carrying iron-rich taconite, a low-grade iron ore mined on the Mesabi Iron Range . Ships ferry the pellets, which are the primary ingredient in steelmaking, from Duluth, Two Harbors and Superior, Wis., to ports in Indiana and Ohio, as well as in Canada.

None of the taconite carried by the Michipicoten was believed to have spilled in the incident.

The Michipicoten was built in 1952 as the coal-fired steamer Elton Hoyt. It was converted to diesel propulsion and rechristened the Michipicoten in 2003 when it was bought by a company that is now a subsidiary of Rand Logistics.

Rand filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2018 and was purchased by the New York-based private equity firm American Industrial Partners.

Serious ship accidents involving Great Lakes freighters have been rare in recent decades. The last major shipwreck was the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald north of Whitefish Point, Mich., in 1975. The 729-foot Fitzgerald was carrying taconite pellets across Lake Superior when it sunk during a storm, killing all 29 of its crew.

15 boats destroyed or damaged in fire at Lake Mead marina

LAS VEGAS ( KVVU /Gray News) - Fifteen boats were destroyed or damaged and two docks suffered damage in a fire at a Lake Mead marina this weekend.

According to the National Park Service, the fire broke out at Las Vegas Boat Harbor Marina around 12:30 a.m. Sunday. Several agencies responded, and it took hours for them to contain the fire.

Witnesses said they were forced to evacuate their boats when the fire started, and some did not have time to grab personal belongings. Some left without knowing whether their boat was burned or spared.

“Oh, it spread within minutes, within minutes. It was like a rapid, boat, to boat, to boat, to boat. And then the sea dunes traveled across the lake and burnt some more boats on our dock,” said Michael Warren with Las Vegas Boat Harbor Security.

Fifteen boats were damaged in an overnight fire at a Lake Mead marina this weekend.

Warren said he was working security at the boat harbor when the fire.

“A resident came to me and told me that she was seeing smoke coming out of her boat,” he said. “She was frantic, you know, in distress, and wanted to know if we can put the fire out.”

Warren said they could see the fire under the woman’s houseboat and used three full fire extinguishers to try to fight it, but the flames and winds were too strong.

“We tried our best to put the boat out, the fire out, but we couldn’t. It just consumed the whole boat and spread it throughout the other boats,” he said.

The marina said there are no known fatalities and only two minor injuries. One boat owner went to the hospital for burn treatment, and one firefighter was checked out and released.

The marina notified boat owners about their boat conditions, and some said they came to the marina themselves Sunday morning to inspect the damage.

The marina remains open to the public, but a partial closure has been ordered for the harbor’s R and I docks. Visitors are urged to be cautious near Hemenway Harbor and the open portions of Las Vegas Boat Harbor due to potential safety concerns.

Boaters said caution tape restricts them from accessing the area where the fire happened.

The province's police watchdog is investigating after a woman was killed in a collision involving an Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) boat on Nepewassi Lake early Friday morning.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said OPP officers with the West Nipissing detachment were on Nepewassi Lake at around 4:30 a.m., after receiving a call about a domestic disturbance at a home only accessible via watercraft.

"While en route to the residence, the OPP boat was involved in a collision with another watercraft," the SIU said in a news release issued Friday evening.

The agency said a 49-year-old woman operating the other boat was seriously injured as a result of the collision and taken to hospital in Sudbury. She died later that afternoon, according to the SIU. A post-mortem exam is set to be scheduled.

No injuries were reported on the OPP boat. According to the release, three investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of police officers in incidents that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault or the discharge of a firearm at a person.

Early morning fire damages 15 boats at Las Vegas Boat Harbor at Lake Mead

lake cruise

LAKE MEAD (KTNV) — About 15 boats were damaged or destroyed after an early morning fire at Las Vegas Boat Harbor at Lake Mead.

According to the National Park Service, the fire started around 12:30 a.m. and was contained by 3:30 a.m.

As of Sunday evening, authorities were still investigating what caused the fire.

Jeff Sammons, a Boulder City resident who operates a waste removal company at Lake Mead, was asleep on his boat when he was startled by an explosion sometime after midnight.

"It was crazy," Sammons says. "A (National Park Service) ranger knocked on the door of my boat and said I have to evacuate. There were flames everywhere. Thank goodness there were no fatalities."

Owners of affected boats have been notified of damages by Las Vegas Boat Harbor staff.

The marina remains open to the public but NPS officials issued a partial area closure of the harbor's "R" and "I" docks, while the investigation continues.

"Everybody ended up being safe and that was in part due to the fact there was a fast response by the marina and the NPS and everybody involved," Sammons says.

Due to potential safety concerns, rangers are advising visitors to be cautious when accessing Hemenway Harbor and open portions of Las Vegas Boat Harbor.

The National Park Service is referring visitors to Boating Lake Mead's Facebook page for specific updates to marina operations and they will share additional updates when they become available.

According to Boating Lake Mead, there are no known fatalities and only two minor injuries. They state one boat owner went to the hospital to be treated for burns and one firefighter was checked out at the scene.
