Getting around

The Kruger National Park is approx a 5-6 hour drive from Johannesburg. The area is quite vast but depending on which lodge you stay in we recommend flying into either Skukuza or Hoedspruit airports where you can drive or be transferred to your lodge.

Highlights of Kruger National Park and surrounds

Everybody  should go on a safari at least once in their life, and where better than  South Africa's  world-famous Kruger National Park and the Eastern Cape, rich in wildlife and home to the Big Five.

One of  Africa’s  biggest game reserves, Kruger is home not only to the Big Five (FYI, that’s lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffalos), but hundreds of other mammals and birds, too. For wildlife, Kruger National Park is pretty much unparallelled. Not only that, rolling savannah and distant mountains make for the safari setting of dreams.

Want to experience safari without skimping on luxury? You’re in luck. Kruger National Park and the Eastern Cape is famous not only for its vast and diverse variety of flora and fauna, but also for its luxury safari lodges, so you get the best of both worlds.

Here’s how to make the most out of your Kruger safari trip:

Kruger safaris are always sensational, but there’s nothing quite like taking a game drive around the National Park by sunset or sunrise. Spot the Big Five before the rest of the world wakes up, as well as cheetahs, wild dogs, antelopes, honey-badgers, bush babies and up to 350 bird species.

For a different safari experience altogether, how about walking Kruger safari tours with expert field guides and trackers? There’s nothing quite like it for feeling close to the action and at one with the wildlife.

If you’re feeling fancy, take a helicopter flight across the bushveld and over the Blyde River Canyon. The views will take your breath away, and the ride itself is a thrill. You might even be lucky enough to spot a herd of elephants from way up in the sky, where you’ll be able to watch the magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.

Enjoy phenomenal stargazing – some of the best in  South Africa  – from  Jock Safari Lodge , where you can even choose to sleep out on your riverside sala for the best outdoorsy experience.

Planning on taking the kids? They’re in for a treat! Drop them off at  Ulusaba Rock Lodges's  ‘Cub’s Club’ for mini rangers’ courses, safari goodies and activities which will inspire even the most apprehensive of little ones. Kruger National Park holidays are truly the best for individuals and groups of all kinds, including families of all sizes and ages.

Many of the lodges celebrate the local Shangaan culture with traditional singing and dancing after dinner or around the BOMA by night, a beautiful and harmonious treat for everyone.

Often when you think of safari holidays, you think of basic lodges and tents. But that’s not how we do safaris at Virgin Holidays, oh no! We’re all about treating you to a bit of luxury, no matter your destination.

Safaris in the Kruger Park safaris are always sensational, but there’s nothing quite like taking a game drive around one of the lodge’s private concessions. Choose a lodge in the Sabi Sands reserve and you will be able to skip the crowds and search for wildlife in your very own piece of paradise, with less vehicles and the ability to do night-drives, you really will feel spoilt. Book the exclusive Cliff Lodge at  Ulusaba  for jaw-dropping views and a private pool, as well as world-class service, or sleep under the stars in the oh-so-exclusive Chalkley’s Treehouse at  Lion Sands . Kick back with a cocktail at the  Motswari Private Game Reserve , which looks onto a watering hole, and watch animals come and go as you sip.

Special occasion? Celebrate your honeymoon with romantic private dining under the African skies and enjoy a hot stone massage using Africology products at the Aroma Boma Spa, Ulusaba.

Sounds just a  little  bit better than you were expecting, hey?

Foodies, rejoice: you’ll get to taste some delicious local food as part of your Kruger safari packages:

  • After an early start spotting the Big Five, a post-safari breakfast will be extremely welcome. How does poaches eggs on a Boerewors patty, a specialist sausage, sound? Thought so.
  • Lunch is served followed by high tea before afternoon game-drive then it is time for the best bit, sundowners. Enjoy stretching your legs in the park where your ranger will select a gorgeous spot for you to enjoy some traditional South African snacks with a cool cocktail or some fine local wine.
  • Feast on Kudu burgers from a  Braai , a traditional African BBQ – super succulent and so tasty you’ll want seconds, and maybe thirds. Even better, enjoy your dinner around the BOMA, with breathtaking views across the plains – the perfect sunset dining experience.
  • As for drink, South Africa is, of course, famous for its vineyards, which means one thing and one thing only: wine. And good wine, at that. Try Pinotage, Chenin Blanc and other new world wines from local vineyards. What a way to wind down at the lodge after a day of wildlife-spotting!

It’s high time you booked yourself and your family or loved ones onto that safari trip you’ve been talking about for years, huh?

Let’s get this show on the road: browse our  Kruger National Park hotels  and lodges right now, this minute, and you’ll soon be hanging out with (okay, near) lions in the African bush.

The Ultimate Where-To-Stay Guide To The Kruger National Park

As the oldest and possibly most frequented conservation reserve in all of Africa, the Kruger National Park has earned its place in countless “must-visit” articles, bucket lists and top destination guides.

Although it has a rich history and a myriad of stories springing up from folklore and ancient tales, the biggest pull for guests planning the ultimate safari trip is the diverse animal species which roam an area roughly the size of Israel. Almost a million guests will travel the Park’s extensive network of tar and gravel roads each year, and along the way, will see all sorts of animals, including the famous Big 5.

Situated neatly in the north-eastern corner of South Africa, the Kruger has over the years spread out over two of the country’s provinces, Mpumalanga and Limpopo, and it shares a border with both Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

While in the Park, you can experience traditional African safaris, guided walks on wilderness trails, enjoy the thrill of a 4x4 trip, try out your skills with a photographic safari, and spend some quiet time sitting in a bird hide.

It is safe to say that there is more to see and do here than you could imagine so planning what you hope to see, how you plan to see it, and most importantly where in the Park you will be staying, is all part of ensuring you have the best possible trip.

Types of Kruger National Park Accommodation

Guests are in for a treat when they book a stay in the Park. The multitude of accommodation options means there is something for everyone to choose from, regardless of their budget. From the upper end 5-star accommodation to the rather rustic and far more affordable camping options, guests will need to plan appropriately to ensure they have the accommodation they want.

Each of the Park’s main rest camps is likely to have this accommodation, although it can vary from camp to camp.

Camping Facilities

So, planning and researching the camp is key.

Authentic and rustic, the huts found in the Park are designed with comfort and affordability in mind. Most of the more basic huts have only one room, making them perfect for couples although others have a sleeper couch and thus, accommodate more than 2 people.

The huts have no kitchens or ablution facilities, so guests have to rely on the camps communal facilities.

Consider these a step up from the camp hut. Bungalows can have more than one bedroom and their own bathroom, although depending on the camp, bathrooms might be absent in which case guests must make use of the communal ablution facilities.

When selecting a bungalow, guests might be able to choose their view, and the view can affect the price.

The cottage is ideal for anyone wanting more space during their stay. A basic cottage generally has a single bedroom along with some living space, a bathroom and a kitchen. Visiting families, couples and singles will be more than comfortable in a cottage.

Family Cottage

For larger groups requiring more sleeping and living space, the family cottage might be what you are looking for. The family cottage has between 2 to 3 bedrooms, a bathroom and a kitchen. And as mentioned, there is also some living space.

Guest Cottage

Slightly bigger than the family cottage, and with more sleeping space, this style of cottage is quite spacious and along with having between 3 and 4 bedrooms, they generally also have 2 bathrooms. A guest cottage will also have its own kitted out kitchen and living area, as well as a braai area and a stoep (veranda).

Luxury Lodges

For those travellers who’d like to experience a more exclusive and private stay, the luxury lodge is a perfect choice. These lodges are owned by either SANParks or they are owned privately. The lodges boast 3, 4 and even 5 star ratings; most include meals and some include safari game drives.

On a side note, most of the camps in the park are completely self-catering which means guests need to cater for their own meals unless they make use of a camp restaurant or café (if these are available). Just about all of the camps will have a braai area included as a part of the accommodation.

It is also important to keep in mind that all accommodation, apart from the luxury lodges, is going to be rather rustic as the Park likes to stay true to its authentic beginnings.

Kruger National Park Rest Camps

Although the Park started out with only two rest camps, Skukuza and Pretoriuskop, today, guests can choose from 12 rest camps as well as several other private camps, bush camps, overnight hides and luxury lodges.

The camps offer guests all sorts of accommodation which ranges from rustic camping, basic huts and comfortable bungalows to spacious guest houses and cottages, and private lodges.

Whatever your taste, the Park accommodates everyone who visits.

Letaba Rest Camp

Overlooking the Letaba River, which is renowned for its elephant population, Letaba Rest Camp is popular for being one of the Park's most scenic camps. The surrounding area offers spectacular wildlife sightings and the accommodation at the camp includes camping and a caravan site, bungalows, guest houses, and safari tents.

This camp is situated at around the halfway point in the Park and the quickest way to get to the camp is to travel through Phalaborwa Gate.

Crocodile Bridge Rest Camp

Another camp situated close to a river, Crocodile Bridge Rest Camp is a game-rich camp, popular for its immense wildlife populations which are often spotted coming to the river for a drink. The camp is far from being the biggest in the Park, however, this is certainly a part of the appeal.

Guests can look forward to staying in the bungalows or at one of the two guesthouses, and for those who want a more affordable or perhaps a more rustic experience, there is a camping/caravan site as well.

Berg-en-Dal Rest Camp

One of the Parks newest camps, Berg-en-Dal is often referred to as the most modern camp in the Park, and one offering exceptional accommodation. Built within the southern section of the park, about 12kms away from Malelane Gate, Berg-en-Dal is one of the Kruger's hillside camps.

There is tree-shaded camping, family cottages, guesthouses and a few one-bedroom huts to stay in.

Lower Sabie Rest Camp

Close to the Mozambique border, on the banks of the Sabie River, lies the Lower Sabie Rest Camp. Popular for its beautiful green lawns and dense trees, this camp is ideal for wildlife watching, as numerous animals frequent the river throughout the day.

Like many of the other camps in the Park, Lower Sabie offers guests camping facilities, snug bungalows, chalets ideal for families, and luxury guesthouses.

Orpen Rest Camp

This camp is located on the western border of the Park and offers guests a sense of privacy. The camp has exquisite flowers local to the area, large trees providing much needed cool shade, and a range of accommodation types.

Orpen is a little smaller than the other camps in the park but it offers huts, family-sized units, and luxury guest houses for visitors to enjoy. The camp also has some of the best views.

Mopani Rest Camp

Within a grove of Mopani trees surrounded by small hills, Mopani Rest Camp has an array of comfortable accommodation options as well as a stunning natural rock pool and a wilderness trail. Another perk is that guests can book guided day and night tours, in the company of an official park guide, while staying at Mopani.

Some of the accommodation options include bungalows, guest cottages and guesthouses, perfect for larger groups.

Pretoriuskop Rest Camp

It is the oldest rest camp in the Park and, to this day, boasts historical accommodation. Pretoriuskop is one of the most popular camps in the Kruger, for several reasons. The camp has some of the most affordable accommodation, a fancy natural rock pool and is well-known for having wildlife, mostly antelope, come right into the camp to nibble on grass.

Guests can camp or stay in a caravan, book a bungalow, opt for a family chalet or enjoy a luxury guesthouse.

Punda Maria Rest Camp

Situated right at the top of the Kruger, in one of the hottest parts of the Park, Punda Maria is the ultimate destination for anyone wanting to travel the full length of the Kruger. It is a quiet camp, perfect for those looking for some solitude, and it has also become the ideal place for spotting all sorts of animals.

The rest camp has space for camping, several family chalets, and a few luxury guesthouses. Guests can enjoy some of the most beautiful views while staying at the camp.

Skukuza Rest Camp

This is the capital of the Kruger and has been named after the Park’s first warden and most influential figure - James Stevenson-Hamilton. The camp has been built on the banks of the Sabie River and its location means guests can enjoy exquisite wildlife views from the camp.

The accommodation available includes camping facilities, bungalows, guest cottages and guesthouses. The camp is also the main place for day visitors to grab a snack or enjoy a picnic, so if you plan to stay here, be prepared for a very busy setting.

Satara Rest Camp

The camp is renowned for its excellent game sightings, with lions often seen close to the camp, lured to the area by the massive plains game population.

Satara is set up in such a way that a stay here is a communal experience, where guests can socialise and share stories about what they have seen during the day. At the camp, guests can enjoy camping or a stay in a bungalow, guest cottages or guesthouses. There is something for everyone at Satara.

Shingwedzi Rest Camp

Another camp which has become quite popular for its game viewing, Shingwedzi is the perfect place for those who will be enjoying a long stay in the Park. Along with having dining facilities, a filling station and a Laundromat, guests can stay in tents, guesthouses and cottages, and bungalows.

Olifants Rest Camp

It is the one camp in which anyone wanting to see elephants should book a stay at. Olifants Rest Camp, overlooking the Olifants River, and is best known for its elephant populations. Guests can spend the whole day admiring the beautiful views and spotting plenty of game right from the camp.

When it comes to the accommodation options, camping, bungalows and guesthouses are available.

Other Camps in the Kruger

While the Park has 12 main rest camps, it also has an assortment of bush camps and satellite camps.

These camps are different in that they often offer a more private and more rustic experience, with many of the camps only offering one type of accommodation and completely lacking things like a filling station, reception area and a shop.

The other camps in the Park include:

Lukimbi Safari Lodge

The Kruger National Park is one of the most famous and visited National Parks in Africa, for good reason. Home to an incredibly diverse wildlife population including the Big 5, a wide range of predators, the biggest collection of mammal species in Africa and an amazing range of bird species - the Kruger Park is a mecca for wildlife encounters.

Over and above the endless African wildlife within the reserve, there are also an incredibly large and unique variety of luxury lodges within and surrounding Kruger National Park.

The Kruger National Park is a destination that is generally considered to be good all year-round.

The attraction to the Kruger National Park is most certainly the wildlife and there is no question that the dry winter season from May to October is considered the best time to experience phenomenal game viewing and walking safaris. The bush is less dense and animals tend to gather around the fewer permanent water sources, allowing for better viewing opportunities.

Mid-winter - June to August - is a very comfortable time of year to visit the Kruger as there are few mosquitoes, little if any rain and temperatures are pleasantly warm during the day and refreshingly cool at night. The bone-dry, end-of-winter months of September and October often experience uncomfortably hot and humid conditions but concentrations of animals around water sources are at their highest - this period is often regarded as the best game-viewing time for a Kruger safari.

The summer rains arrive from November onwards , peak in January and February and end around April. The Kruger is transformed into a beautiful, thriving green landscape and it makes for superb photography. Game viewing is still good with many young animals around, making it a predator's paradise. It is also the best time for bird watching as well as safari-and-beach holiday combinations.

The Kruger National Park is considered a low malaria area, however, we would recommend consulting a medical practitioner for advice about malaria.

The Kruger National Park is also very popular during the long December/January school holidays, so should you be looking to travel during this time period, we strongly recommend that you book well in advance and consider the northern parts of the park or the Kruger's private reserves and concessions, should you desire a less crowded experience.

The Kruger National Park is regarded as the ultimate safari destination and the largest in South Africa . With almost two million hectares of pristine wilderness, the park is split into northern and southern reserves. The northern reserves are often referred to as the Greater Kruger National Park .

Home to the famous Big 5 : lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo, and the highest number of large mammal species on any African reserve, the Kruger offers a rewarding safari experience and an array of accommodation options including luxury lodges and self-catering. Activities offered at most reserves include morning and afternoon/evening open vehicle game drives and guided bush walks. Some reserves offer optional local village tours, hot air ballooning, elephant interactions, visits to animal rehabilitation centers, treehouse sleep-outs and photographic safaris.

Essential information for kruger park safaris.

The magnificent Kruger National Park stands as one of South Africa’s most beloved and iconic landmarks. Every year, this conservation reserve warmly welcomes numerous visitors from around the globe. Many of these guests embark on various Kruger Park trips or opt for a self-driven adventure through the park, all seeking the serene solitude that can only be found in the wild. However, it’s not just the tranquility that draws visitors to the park; it’s the captivating wildlife.

Credit goes to Paul Kruger, the former president of the now-defunct Transvaal Republic, who dedicated himself to setting aside a portion of Transvaal for the preservation of animals. Without his tireless efforts, the park’s inhabitants would have long vanished from the landscape. In 1898, when the park was initially established, hunting was rampant, and trophies of big game like lions and elephants were highly coveted by foreign visitors. To safeguard the local wildlife from complete extinction, the park was designated as a no-hunting zone, and it remains one of the world’s oldest and largest conserved areas to this day.

Today, we enjoy the fruits of the wisdom and foresight of those who came before us. A Kruger Park safari is an unforgettable experience, and it’s more affordable than you might imagine. Initially, tourists didn’t enter the park; however, around 1927, the first paying visitors were permitted to explore it. In those early days, there were no accommodations inside the park, so visitors had to exit before sunset.

As time passed and transportation methods evolved, more tourists began arriving, and accommodations were developed to allow them to stay overnight. Entry fees were never excessively high, earning the park a reputation as the “People’s Park,” a place where anyone could experience the wonders of conservation. Today, even a 7-day safari is quite budget-friendly, and there’s always the option of a self-driven adventure through the park.

Booking a Kruger Park safari or a Kruger Day Tour has never been easier. A quick online search will yield a plethora of options, many of which are offered by reputable safari companies like ours. Why choose to book a safari instead of going for a self-drive? Well, in reality, it requires less planning and can save you a few bucks (pun intended).

The Establishment of an Iconic Conservation Park

Although the Kruger National Park was officially declared in 1898, it wasn’t until 1927 that it was officially named the Kruger National Park and opened its gates to tourists. Those early years were quite intriguing, as tourists would traverse the park on a train, providing limited visibility of the wildlife. The route was fixed and unchangeable, but it was considered the safest way for early visitors to experience the park. These were the days before the advent of the automobile, so it’s easy to imagine how the park’s accessibility changed after cars became commonplace.

By 1928, a board of directors was overseeing the Kruger Park, and it was determined that in order to make the park more accessible to visitors, overnight accommodations were needed. The park’s first rondavels, round-hut-style accommodations that have since become synonymous with the park, were constructed at Skukuza, Pretoriuskop, and Satara. As more and more guests flocked to the park, additional accommodations were added for their convenience, while the former ranger lodgings were also converted into unique guest accommodations.

For those who have researched South Africa and the Kruger Park in particular, it’s well-known that the summers in the region can be exceptionally hot and humid. One can sympathize with the park’s earliest overnight guests who grappled with the challenge of staying cool. In fact, staying overnight in one of the rondavels was not a popular choice in those days. While it was a novelty, the heat was often unbearable, and mosquitoes were a constant nuisance that couldn’t be kept out. These days, rondavels are equipped with fans, and some even have air conditioning. Additionally, in those early days, the accommodations did not provide complete isolation from the wilderness. As the park expanded and construction progressed, guests gained more protection from the wildlife and access to ablution blocks where they could bathe or shower.

The Flora and Fauna of Kruger National Park

While the park’s wildlife is the primary attraction for visitors, the plant life in the area is equally as captivating as the animals. The flora within the park is incredibly diverse, and the park is divided into four distinct regions, each characterized by its unique plant species.

  • Thorn Trees and Red Bush-Willow Veld Located in the western and central parts of the park, just south of the Olifants River, this region is dominated by red bush-willow and acacia (thorn) trees. Marula trees are also abundant in this area, while acacia trees line the rivers and streams. The Nwatimhiri Bush and areas along the Sabie River are particularly dense with vegetation.
  • Knob Thorn and Marula Veld South of the Olifants River and to the eastern part of the park, you’ll find the knob thorn and marula veld. This region offers ample grazing grounds and is characterized by red grass, buffalo grass, knob thorn trees, and marula trees, making it an essential part of the park’s ecosystem.
  • Red Bush-Willow and Mopane Veld In the northern part of the park, west of the Olifants River, the predominant vegetation consists of red bush-willow and mopane trees.
  • Shrub Mopane Veld The northeastern part of the park is predominantly covered by mopane trees.

It’s important to note that these regions host a wider variety of plants and trees than those mentioned above. The abundance of these trees and bushes contributes to the naming of the areas, and each region plays a crucial role in supporting the park’s diverse wildlife.

Notable Wildlife and Conservation Efforts

Kruger National Park is renowned for being home to the Big 5, which includes lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, and buffalos. While these iconic animals are a major draw for Kruger visitors, the park also houses a broader array of species than any other park on the African continent, totaling 147 species of animals. In addition to numerous predators and large animals like elephants, the park is home to a variety of antelope species such as kudu, impala, nyala, and eland. Furthermore, the park serves as a sanctuary for endangered and rare species, such as the wild dog, underscoring its importance in wildlife conservation.

Anti-Poaching Measures

Due to the presence of numerous endangered species within the park, extensive efforts have been in place for many years to combat poaching. Anti-poaching units are equipped with cutting-edge prevention tools, including night vision technology and advanced telescopes. Game rangers, law enforcement officers, and military personnel have all actively participated in the campaign to curtail poaching activities. While there has been a reduction in poaching incidents, animals, particularly rhinos, remain under constant threat.

While elephants are sporadically targeted by poachers, it is the rhinoceros that often makes headlines. Poachers enter the Kruger National Park during full moon nights, targeting both black and white rhinos for their valuable horns. These horns can fetch approximately $66,000 per kilogram on the black market. Despite bans on horn trade in most countries, these restrictions have had limited impact on deterring illegal activities.

Exploring the 12 Principal Camps of Kruger National Park

Kruger National Park offers a multitude of reasons to visit, and among them is the rich history and warm hospitality found in each camp. The park is a laid-back haven, where even the bustling main camps exist in their own tranquil bubble, far removed from the modern world. Before delving into discussions about the park’s historical significance, its incredible wildlife, or the safari experiences it offers today, let’s take a closer look at each of the 12 main camps.

Krugersafaris.com

Located in a mountainous area, Berg-n-Dal is a unique camp that has preserved its natural environment and habitat. Dry riverbeds run along its southern and northern borders, and the camp boasts large trees. Wildlife enthusiasts can spot creatures like wild dogs, klipspringers, and leopards near the camp. Berg-n-Dal is one of the newer camps in the park, offering a range of facilities and comfortable accommodations.

Crocodile Bridge

As one of the smaller camps in Kruger National Park, Crocodile Bridge takes its name from the nearby Crocodile River. It’s an excellent spot for game viewing, especially along the Southern Circle, where lions are frequently sighted. Other animals in the area include kudu, giraffes, spotted hyenas, and cheetahs. This camp has garnered multiple nominations as the best camp in the park.

Letaba is ideally situated at the park’s midpoint, acting as a bridge between the north and south. Its name means “River of Sand,” and it’s renowned for its elephant sightings. The area around Letaba is lush and green, bursting with nighttime activity, including bats, owls, nightjars, frogs, and cicadas. It’s a prime spot for observing elephants and bushbucks.

Lower Sabie

Lower Sabie sits on the banks of the Sabie River, offering a serene and laid-back atmosphere. The camp is well-known for its majestic trees, making it an ideal location for leopard sightings. Other animals that frequent the area include hippos, lions, and various antelope species. Lower Sabie provides excellent accommodations.

Mopani camp is surrounded by Mopani trees and features a massive baobab tree at its center. The camp’s vegetation is left in its natural state, and wildlife enthusiasts can spot hippos, waterbucks, and tsessebes. The camp borders Pioneer Dam, attracting animals for afternoon and morning water breaks.

Olifants is renowned for its breathtaking views, perched high on a hill above the Olifants River. The camp is surrounded by viewing platforms that offer an excellent vantage point for observing wildlife near the water below. Animals like crocodiles, lions, elephants, and hippos can be spotted here. The camp also offers great accommodation options and a picturesque picnic area.

Orpen, along with its satellite camps Maroela and Tamboti, enjoys a strategic location. The camp is named after Eileen Orpen, the land’s owner who donated it to the park. This grassy area is ideal for observing grazing animals, and the surrounding open plains are home to numerous lion prides. The night air resonates with the roars of lions, creating an unforgettable experience. Orpen offers diverse wildlife sightings, including the Big 5, wildebeests, and jackals.

Pretoriuskop

Nestled among ancient granite rocks, Pretoriuskop is home to fascinating granite boulders. As one of the park’s oldest camps, it retains a historical charm in its layout and style. The camp is known for sightings of Sable antelopes, Lichtenstein’s Hartebeests, wild dogs, and kudus. Its proximity to one of the park’s entry points makes it a popular choice for visitors.

Punda Maria

Punda Maria, located in the park’s northernmost region, experiences scorching temperatures even during winter. It boasts a unique sandveld habitat with diverse plant life, earning it the nickname “botanical gardens of the park.” Wildlife enthusiasts may encounter nyala, wild dogs, and zebra herds. Punda Maria is an ideal destination for those seeking tranquility.

Satara was one of the first camps to build rondavels, offering overnight stays to interested guests. Today, it’s a bustling camp renowned for excellent game viewing opportunities. Nestled in a wooded area, Satara is considered rustic and a haven for birdwatchers. Visitors can spot lions, giraffes, wildebeests, and the elusive honey badger.

Shingwedzi, another camp in the park’s northern region, is celebrated for wildlife sightings, including nyala, waterbucks, and elephants. The scenic route along the Shingwedzi River provides access to the camp. With its rustic charm and limited modern conveniences, Shingwedzi offers a true break from the ordinary. The camp’s sparser vegetation makes wildlife spotting easier.

Skukuza is often saved for last on our list, serving as the capital of Kruger National Park. It’s the central hub where day visitors typically stop for lunch. Situated along the Sabie River’s southern banks, Skukuza boasts multiple lookout points and a tranquil atmosphere. Visitors can encounter animals such as spotted hyenas, bush babies, and warthogs. The camp also offers a range of accommodations and modern conveniences.

Each of these main camps provides a unique experience and a glimpse into the rich tapestry of Kruger National Park.

Additionally, the park features satellite camps, bushveld camps, overnight hides, bush lodges, luxury lodges, and campsites to cater to various preferences and interests.

With numerous ways to explore and experience the Kruger National Park, the ease of booking a safari, and the friendly and helpful nature of the guides, embarking on a Kruger Park Safari is a decision you’ll never regret.

Is Kruger National Park a Hazardous Destination?

Kruger National Park enjoys global acclaim for its incredible wildlife, picturesque landscapes, and rich history. Every day, thousands of people visit the park, eager to explore its offerings. The Kruger Park boasts numerous captivating sights, including scenic hilltop camps with river views, lookout points near rivers or watering holes, and picturesque clearings by the roadside. Visitors have the opportunity to encounter animals throughout the park, which also means the possibility of interactions and potential risks, both with wildlife and fellow humans.

Among the notable dangers:

African Elephants: While these gentle giants are usually passive, they can become agitated and defensive when their calf is present. Elephants have a strong maternal instinct and will protect their offspring at all costs. Agitated elephants may provide warnings before attacking, but danger arises when separating the calf from its mother or when there is limited space to move. Fortunately, elephant attacks are not common occurrences.

Buffaloes: Buffalo herds pose a greater threat than elephant herds. When provoked, buffaloes can attack without warning. They are social animals that often defend themselves in groups. When a vehicle threatens the herd, they may charge or stampede, causing chaos and a serious danger to all involved. Buffaloes have been known to damage vehicles and harm people.

Hidden dangers include:

On-Foot Dangers: Guests walking in the Kruger, whether on a bushwalk or within rest camps, may encounter hidden dangers such as snakes and spiders. The park is home to 152 spider species, including potentially dangerous ones like the Button Spider, Sac Spider, and Violin Spider. When on foot, guests should also be cautious of snakes, which can seek shelter in various places and strike without warning when threatened.

Curious Vervet Monkeys: Some park residents, like Vervet Monkeys, are curious and may come into close proximity to humans. These clever animals travel in large troops and are commonly found near rest camps where they can access trash cans and fresh food. Vervets may enter people’s accommodations and can become aggressive when cornered or injured. A troop of Vervet Monkeys can pose a danger to both visitors and themselves.

In summary, while the Kruger National Park offers incredible wildlife encounters, visitors should be aware of potential dangers and exercise caution. It’s crucial to respect the park’s wildlife and follow safety guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

What is the price of a Kruger National Park safari?

Kruger National Park stands as the top tourist destination in South Africa. Its immense size, abundant wildlife and plant species, along with exceptional photography opportunities, make it a must-visit when traveling to South Africa. Many international visitors may not be fully aware of what to expect and the associated costs during their stay at Kruger National Park.

The overall cost of your safari experience in Kruger largely depends on your preferences and activities. Entrance fees to the park can vary based on your nationality. South African citizens pay R200 per adult and R50 per child, while international guests are charged R400 per adult and R200 per child. In addition, all visitors, regardless of nationality, must pay daily conservation fees of R400 per adult and R200 per child.

Visitors have the option of embarking on a self-drive safari, where they take charge of their entire adventure, from driving around the park to creating their own schedule. Self-drive safaris are popular among those who wish to explore Kruger National Park at their own pace, spend quality time with family and friends, and avoid strict schedules. The costs associated with a self-drive safari typically include entrance and conservation fees paid at the gate, fuel expenses, funds for food and snacks during the day, and money for souvenirs. Accommodation, if needed, is a separate cost and can sometimes be relatively expensive.

Alternatively, there are numerous safari companies that offer guided tours, providing a wide range of experiences at varying costs. Many of these companies offer 3/4/5-day safari packages, catering to different budgets. These packages can range from budget-friendly options to more luxurious tours that include meals. It’s essential to research different safari companies to find one that aligns with your preferences and budget. For guests opting for a 3/4/5-day safari, accommodation costs are usually included in the tour package, allowing them to focus on the experience rather than worrying about where to stay.

Safari experiences with a tour company offer the advantage of exploring more of Kruger National Park while being guided by experienced tour guides who provide valuable insights about the park and its wildlife. Guides keep track of animal sightings, ensuring reliable and exciting tours. On the other hand, self-drive safaris provide a relaxed and cost-effective alternative, allowing guests to spend the entire day making memories with family and friends at their own pace. Newcomers to Kruger Park are encouraged to consider guided tours, especially if they are not familiar with the park’s landscape and surroundings.

Which Kruger National Park Camps are considered the finest?

The Kruger National Park is enveloped by an incredibly diverse landscape, featuring a wide range of biomes that house distinct plant life, climates, and wildlife. Given its extensive size, the park offers numerous opportunities for visitors to take a break, enjoy meals, cool off, and find accommodation after a day of exploration. Throughout the Kruger Park, there are a variety of unique rest camps, tent camps, and lodges designed to accommodate and meet the expectations of any traveler.

Indulgent Retreats: Within the Kruger National Park, there are numerous exceptional rest camps, each offering unique features that set them apart. If you seek central access to the park, luxurious accommodation options, breathtaking scenery, and a wealth of amenities like a cinema, library, and restaurants, Skukuza is an ideal destination. Satara, located right in the heart of lion territory, is renowned for its prime location. Guests are virtually guaranteed to encounter numerous lion prides while visiting this area and staying at the camp. Satara Camp has a rustic charm and is not as bustling as Skukuza, providing the luxury of a modern camp combined with the tranquility of a smaller rest camp.

Elephant Haven: Elephants are a major attraction in the Kruger Park, making an area known for spectacular elephant sightings immensely popular. Olifants Camp is situated atop a hill, offering unparalleled views. The camp is celebrated for its breathtaking vistas and is often considered one of the finest camps in the Kruger. Its peaceful ambiance and reputation as an elephant hotspot make it a unique and highly regarded choice for accommodation.

Secluded and Serene: For those who prefer a lighter, more minimalist experience, there are plenty of rest camps that offer excellent camping opportunities. Berg en Dal is one of the larger camps in the Kruger, but its location in a hilly area surrounded by dry riverbeds creates one of the most serene and relaxed places to spend the night. Some of the best camping spots are situated near the camp’s fences, providing unobstructed views of the Kruger’s natural beauty, free from the interference of buildings and trees. Balule, located close to the center of the Kruger Park, is the second smallest camp in the park. Despite its proximity to Satara, Balule is a preferred choice for those seeking peace and solitude. Balule is a satellite camp without electricity, where the kitchen operates on gas, and it boasts spacious areas that offer less shade but more opportunities for stargazing. The camp is frequently visited by hyenas and elephants that patrol the low fence, allowing guests to feel truly immersed in nature during their stay at Balule Satellite Camp.

What wildlife can be observed in Kruger National Park?

Kruger National Park is home to a diverse array of mammal, bird, and plant species. Its establishment dates back to May 1926, but even before that, the Sabi Sand Reserve was dedicated to conserving Lowveld wildlife. When Kruger National Park was founded, it was declared a sanctuary where no animals were to be hunted.

The Lowveld region is renowned for its unique mammal species, many of which are exclusive to this area. Among the notable mammals in the park, Lions take the spotlight as the second-largest cat species globally and the largest in South Africa, second only to the Tiger. Lions are highly social creatures, often found in large prides comprising a dominant male, juvenile males, numerous lionesses, and their cubs. Another sought-after cat species in the park is the elusive Leopard, known for its solitary and secretive hunting behavior, blending seamlessly into the savannah vegetation. The Cheetah, the world’s fastest land animal, surprises many safari-goers with its appearance, resembling a Leopard but with a more slender build and smaller spots. Other lesser-known and rarer cat species in the park include the Rooikat, Wild Cat, Serval, and Caracal, which are solitary and often nocturnal hunters.

Antelopes are a predominant presence in Kruger National Park and are usually among the first animals encountered upon entering the park. The common Impala is a highly social species found in large herds, often mingling with Zebra and Buffalo herds. Known as the “McDonald’s of the Kruger” due to their abundance, Impalas are easy prey for many predators. Other notable antelope species in the park include the Kudu, which serves as a symbol of Kruger National Park, and the Eland, the world’s largest antelope species. These magnificent antelopes are highly prized in hunting reserves but are protected within the park.

Among the park’s largest animals are the African Elephant, renowned for its majestic herds and strong maternal instincts. It is the largest and heaviest land animal globally. The Black and White Rhinos, while popular, face severe threats from poaching, and their populations have significantly declined. Other notable giants in Kruger include the Cape Buffalo and the Blue Wildebeest, commonly found near water sources and interacting with Zebra and Impala herds. While mostly passive, they can be dangerous if provoked.

The variety of animals in Kruger National Park is astonishing. Zebras are a delight to observe as they socialize with Impalas and engage in unique interactions. Wild Dogs, although rare, are highly sought-after animals often on the wish list of safari-goers. Hyenas are more active in the afternoon and can be recognized by their distinctive calls. Giraffes are a fun encounter, though sometimes challenging to spot amid the trees. They travel in small herds, making a memorable sighting nearly guaranteed during your adventure in Kruger Park.

What bird species can be observed in Kruger National Park?

While Kruger National Park is renowned for its diverse mammal and reptile species, the rich variety of bird species within the park often goes unnoticed. Yet, the park offers exceptional opportunities for birdwatching, attracting enthusiasts with thrilling sightings.

One of the most iconic and sought-after birds in Kruger National Park is the Bateleur Eagle. This striking bird is frequently spotted perching in trees near sandy areas of the park, delighting birdwatchers on Kruger Park Safaris. Another common sight at rest camps is the Greater Blue Eared Starling, a beautiful blue bird often seen flying close to people in search of food scraps. The park is also home to a variety of eagle and hawk species, including the Bat Hawk, Hawk Eagle, and Crested Eagle, among others.

A well-known avian resident of the Lowveld is the African Fish Eagle. Its distinctive call often precedes its appearance as it soars through the skies. This majestic raptor is frequently seen near bodies of water capable of sustaining it. Their sizable nests, averaging 2 meters in diameter and a meter deep, are often found in trees near watering holes. African Fish Eagles may have multiple nests that they visit when food is scarce in a particular area. Another bird closely associated with Kruger National Park is the humble Helmeted or Spotted Guinea Fowl. These small birds are commonly observed in small flocks in rest camps, picnic areas, and along roadsides, particularly in the mornings. Local lore suggests that Guinea Fowls should only be eaten during months without an ‘R’ in their names, such as May, June, July, and August.

A group of birds, known as the “Big 6” of birds, mirrors the concept of the Big 5 mammals. This group includes the Kori Bustard, recognized as the world’s heaviest flying bird; the Martial Eagle, strong enough to knock an adult off their feet; the Leppetfaced Vulture, Africa’s largest vulture; the Pel’s Fishing Owl, often referred to as the leopard of the group due to its rarity; the Saddle-billed Stork, known for its vibrant plumage; and the Southern Ground Hornbill.

Kruger Park also hosts numerous common bird species commonly found in the Lowveld region. Birds like the Hadida, Hammerhead, Hoephoep, Kingfishers, Woodpeckers, and the Piet-my-Vrou are frequently seen throughout the park, providing a sense of familiarity and comfort to many visitors.

Africa Collection founder and director Chris Fortescue

Originally from South Africa, Chris has been in the travel industry since 1990 and has travelled to most parts of Southern, East Africa and Indian Ocean Islands.

After completing school in Johannesburg, Chris spent a period with the South African armed forces before venturing out to travel the World, then realizing his passion for travel. He returned to his beloved South Africa to study Travel & Tourism before returning to the UK to start his career in the travel sector and in promoting travel to Africa and Indian Ocean Islands.

Loves his sport including rugby, the odd drink, braai (BBQ), his wife and family (not in that order obviously). Chris is a founder of Africa Collection and enjoys being part of a dedicated team and the dynamic nature of the travel industry as a director of the company.

"Some of my favourite places are the remote parts of Namibia, Botswana and Zambia, not to mention North Island in the Seychelles where I hope to return to someday."

Africa Collection founder and director James Westrip

James has worked in the travel industry in the UK in many sectors & capacities since 1987, and has been involved with tourism to Africa since 1993. James considers himself a 'travel junkie' and unless he has a holiday booked or being planned he feels as though he is going 'cold turkey'. He now travels with his family, encouraging his children to be citizens of the world. James is a founder member of the Africa Collection team (from July 2000) & is a director of the company.

MY AFRICA & INDIAN OCEAN

"I consider myself very lucky to have travelled as much as I have in Africa & the Indian Ocean, and there are a few places that stand out for me. Likoma Island on Lake Malawi is right up there and is truly a unique travel experience, with Kaya Mawa Lodge the only place to stay - and what a place!

Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean is a paradoxical combination of Creole and French culture, being an Overseas Department of France some 6000 miles away from Europe, and mountain scenery to die for. And of course Cape Town and Plettenberg Bay in South Africa both take my breath away each time I visit."

Africa Collection travel expert Lee-Anne Westrip

Lee-Anne has been in the travel industry since 1988, initially in retail travel in South Africa and subsequently with Tour Operators in the UK. At Africa Collection, Lee-Anne looks after the finance and administration of the company and with the support of many of the team dabbles in marketing and social media.

"When given the opportunity to travel anywhere in the world (I consider myself extremely fortunate to do this), I find it difficult to preclude Africa or the Indian Ocean, I fail to understand why anyone would !

There is so much about South Africa that ticks the boxes for me from fabulous accommodation, glorious food and delectable wines to year-round incredible weather. Recently I fulfilled a life-long dream and did a riding safari in the Waterberg area only a few hours from my home town, something I hope to do again soon.

I have also recently visited two firm favourites of mine being Mauritius and Zanzibar and was delighted to discover, having not been for some time, that they remain on top of my list for very good reason. Seychelles is however somewhere I have not been for too many years, so perhaps that’s what should be next !"

Africa Collection travel expert Rebecca Aylett

Rebecca has worked in the travel industry since 1987 for both tour operators and travel agents alike as well as recently teaching A level Travel & Tourism in her local 6th form college to inspire the next generation of travel experts.

Rebecca has travelled to many countries over the years as well as living in Australia with her young family for 6 months and is always looking for the next place around the globe to tick off her bucket list.

When not working Rebecca loves getting out in all weathers with her dog and relaxing with her busy family.

"To say that Africa has always been on my ‘dream destination’ list is a bit cliché but so very true.

I cannot think a country more diverse in its offerings of scenery, wildlife and culture. A true all rounder of a place with something for everyone.

Cape Town captivates me with all of its hidden treasures and places to discover as well as enjoying the stunning views of the surrounding landscape from the iconic Table Mountain. I am a bit of a foodie so love nothing more than sitting on the waterfront with a plate of seafood and to sit back and soak up the atmosphere whilst people watching!

It is true that South Africa has so much more to it than Cape Town but I cant think of a better place to start your African adventure."

Africa Collection travel expert Alex Westrip

Alex joined Africa Collection in September 2018 after a gap year travelling, during which she spent four months in South Africa, including a month long safari. Having been on family holidays to South Africa every year, she has been able to travel all over and has fallen in love with the country and it’s incredible scenery and culture. She would love to visit more of Africa and there is a never ending list of places she would like to see.

"My favourite African trips have been family holidays to South Africa, the diversity of the country never fails to amaze me and I have been fortunate enough to see so much of it. Being on safari is always my favourite holiday and I will never tire of it. However I love seeing more of Africa, and so far Zanzibar has been one of my favourite destinations. It is incomparable to anywhere else, with such a unique style and amazing scenery, and I am dying to visit more stunning Indian Ocean destinations."

Africa Collection travel expert Paul

Paul joined Africa Collection in April 2016. Initially fulfilling a website maintenance and search engine optimisation role, it was soon realised that there were additional needs, and the role extended into full website redevelopment, multiple aspects of digital marketing, as well as in-house management applications.

"Having lived in South Africa most of my life, I have had the opportunity to travel and explore many amazing parts of this beautiful country, as well as many of the surrounding countries. Besides the general day to day climate which is always appreciated, there are many places that are spattered around like hidden gems where you truly get a sense of peace and serenity."

Africa Collection travel expert Kirsty A

Kirsty’s travel story began in 2007 when she started at Portfolio. Originally from Joburg, she says she’s a reborn Capetonian who just got lost for a while. Her favourite South African destination is the North Coast of KZN and she loves playing a part in creating once in a lifetime memories for our travellers.

"My most memorable travel experience has to be my self-drive trip through Namibia. The vastness of the desert plains, the desolate yet calming landscapes that constantly change as you make your way north – there’s a peace here that I haven’t found anywhere else. The country – and the people! – have an earthy wildness about them. If I could go anywhere in Africa, I’d pick the ultimate beach tour of Mozambique, Madagascar and the Seychelles."

Africa Collection travel expert Kirsty S

Kirsty has had a passion for travel since commencing a diploma in travel and tourism at college before heading to work for various UK Tour Operators and gaining experience and knowledge for this adored industry. At Africa Collection, Kirsty works in our administration team supporting our clients and suppliers to make sure all your post booking needs are in place ready for your holiday. In her time away from work Kirsty enjoys city trips, hiking, yoga and spending time with her family and friends.

"Even though I feel there are just so many fond memories of this continent I could choose from, my absolute favourite has got to be a holiday with my mum, when she was celebrating a very special birthday and we went on a magnificent trip around South Africa. It was my first ever time visiting this country and it 100% did not disappoint! From the vibrancy of Cape Town, to the delicate food and wine in Franschhoek, the whale watching in Hermanus, the wonder of the Cango Caves in Oudtshoorn and the white lions in Pumba Game Reserve... I just cannot tell you how absolutely amazing this destination is. It literally has so much to offer. On my bucket list is to go on a wildlife adventure in Botswana followed by some relaxation time on the beach in Mauritius."

Africa Collection travel expert Kirsty R

Kirsty has been in the travel industry for her entire career, the majority of which has been in Tour Operation and as an Africa/safari specialist since 2014. Her passion for Africa ignited being raised on David Attenborough documentaries and Wilbur Smith novels.

“I adore the big African Skies, drifting off to sleep, under canvas to the magical soundscape of the African bush and the thrills of wildlife spotting on safari. Wildlife and nature conservation is of particular interest and I volunteer at a local rewilding estate, helping with the White Stork population amongst other wildlife. Kenya and Tanzania are amongst my favourites, to be floating in a hot air balloon over the Masai Mara is so memorable and a feast for the senses. I climbed (and summitted) Mount Kilimanjaro a few years ago and was overwhelmed by the spectacular vistas from Africa's tallest mountain. My Indian Ocean choice will always be the Seychelles, so scenically beautiful, fabulous cuisine and luxurious boutique hotels on amazing beaches - what's not to like?”

Africa Collection travel expert Bex

Bex has worked in the travel industry since she left college in 2004. After studying travel and tourism she started her career at Africa Collection where Bex spent 8 years gaining knowledge and experience of the travel industry & the African continent before heading to another African Specialist. In September 2023 Bex made her way back home to Africa Collection. At Africa Collection Bex works in the administration support team assisting our reservations consultants and clients. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her two young boys, family and friends.

“After having the privilege of visiting many countries with both work and family I fell in love with the African Continent. One of my fondest memories is gorilla trekking in Rwanda. I feel very lucky to have been given the opportunity to get up close to such wonderful creatures. A moment I will never forget. Another fond memory has to be taking our little boy on his first safari to Pumba Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape. He still talks about it a few years later and keeps asking if we can go back to see Thomas the game ranger again! That particular trip started off watching my husband run 65km up Table Mountain and around Cape Town before we travelled along the spectacular Garden Route. The next destination I would like to tick off my bucket list is to visit one of the Indian Ocean Islands such as Mauritius or The Seychelles.”

We’ll help you decide by clearing up the difference between the two wilderness regions and tips on where to stay depending on what interests you and your family or friends.

What is the difference between Kruger Park and Greater Kruger?

Kruger Park is a state-supported national park that is managed by South African National Parks (SANParks). Greater Kruger is made up of 7 private nature reserves that fall under the auspices of Associated Private Nature Reserves (APNR). The seven nature reserves are made up of a collection of about 18 private safari operations.

Although the two wildlife regions lie adjacent to each other, they operate as separate entities and access to the private reserves of Greater Kruger is restricted. Access to the private concessions is also restricted to the public.

The fences around the game reserves in Greater Kruger as well as Kruger’s boundary fence were removed a number of years ago to allow animals to roam freely between the two protected wilderness areas. Timbavati, Manyeleti and Sabi Sands share an unfenced boundary with Kruger National Park.

If you’re looking for luxury accommodation for a safari holiday within Kruger, the deluxe lodges on the private concessions offer facilities on par with the best you’ll find in Greater Kruger. The luxury lodges in both Kruger Park and Greater Park are unashameably marketed to the high-end traveller and come with a high price tag, largely because they follow a ‘high quality/limited tourists’ model.

Luxury safari lodges in Kruger National Park

The luxury safari lodges in Kruger National Park are located on private concessions which is land leased by the government to independent operators. The bulk of the accommodation in Kruger Park is self-catering units managed by SANParks, with prices kept low to make the Park accessible to a large volume of visitors.

In 2002, Jock Safari Lodge was built on the first private concession established in Kruger Park. Six other private concessions were rolled out thereafter. The role of private concessions is to generate much-needed revenue for the Park. Even though Kruger Park is a state-owned national park, it’s primarily run on money generated from tourism.

There are 5 private concessions in Kruger Park and a total of 15 luxury safari lodges to choose from; all as gorgeous and perfect as the next. Where you stay depends on what interests you from a wildlife and nature point of view but you can rest assured, each luxury safari lodge promises you a safari holiday of your dreams.

·          Singita Private Concession

15 000 hectares located in the remote and mountainous eastern region close to the Mozambique boundary and at the confluence of two mighty rivers. It’s home to the ultra-luxury Singita Lebombo and Singita Sweni safari lodges.

·          Imbali Private Concession

10 000 hectares located in the heart of central Kruger Park and home to 3 outstanding luxury lodges which includes Imbali Safari Lodge and Hamilton’s Tented Camp.

·          Jock of the Bushveld Private Concession

6 000 hectares located in southern Kruger Park, where the Mitomeni and Biyamiti rivers meet. The private concession was the first one granted and is home to Jock Safari Lodge and Fitzpatrick’s at Jock, an intimate private camp that caters for small groups.

·          Lukimbi Private Concession

15 000 hectares located in southern Kruger and bordered by three rivers. It’s the largest private concession in the Kruger Park and is home to Lukimbi Safari Lodge.

·          Tinga Private Concession

5 000 hectare located in southern Kruger with the Sand and Sabie rivers passing through the concession. The area around Tinga is renowned for its strong population of Big Cats which include leopard, lion and cheetah as well as large numbers of spotted hyena and wild dog. The private concession is home to the exclusive Tina Narina Lodge and Tinga Legends Lodge.

Luxury safari lodges in Southern Kruger Park

Southern Kruger is bound by the Crocodile River at the southern tip of the Park and Sabie River to the north. The bushveld is lush and there are many permanent water sources, which means the southern section of Kruger Park has one of the highest concentrations of animals in the Park.

You’ll see excellent sightings of the Big 5 in the southern zone with guaranteed sightings of lion, rhino and large herds of elephant and buffalo in the triangle of Pretoriuskop, Lower Sabie and Pretoriuskop. There are fewer lions in the southern region as they tend to follow the large herds of antelope that favour the central region.

Southern Kruger is the busiest section of the Park because it’s the easiest to reach from Johannesburg and it has the highest concentration of game. Tourist crowds in the Kruger rest camps and ‘queuing to view’ animal sightings in the busy holiday seasons can be frustrating for travellers who want a more exclusive safari experience, but it’s not a problem when you’re staying at a luxury lodge on a private concession because access to the private land is restricted.

Where to stay in Kruger Park for a luxury safari holiday

There are 15 luxury safari lodges located on private concessions in Kruger Park. Where you stay largely depends on what interests you, and possibly how much time you have for a luxury safari holiday. Kruger Park is divided into 4 tourism eco-zones and each section offers wildlife and nature lovers something unique.

With authentic buffalo dung walls and rustic finishes, Camp Shawu promises guests a real ‘Out of Africa’ experience. Private decks overlook the Mpanamana Dam and beautiful bushveld surrounds. Camp Shawu is the sister camp of Camp Shonga on a 15 000-hectare private concession.

Camp Shonga

Camp Shonga is a small intimate bush retreat built in the foothills of the Lebombo Mountains, offering views over the African bushveld as far as the eye can see. Camp Shonga shares the same ethos as Camp Shawu but with the added emphasis of guests’ participation in select environmental awareness programmes.

Shishangeni Private Lodge

Shishangeni Private Lodge is built on what was the last private concession allocated to private operators in the Kruger National Park. It’s located in the south-eastern region with the Crocodile River on its southern boundary and Mozambique boundary to the east.

Lukimbi Safari Lodge

Lukimbi Safari Lodge is a 5-star luxury safari lodge located in southern Kruger on the largest concession in the national park. With only one deluxe safari lodge operating in a private area that spans 15 000 hectares, guests staying at Lukimbi Safari Lodge are guaranteed the ultimate exclusive safari experience.

Jock Safari Lodge and Fitzpatrick’s at Jock

Jock Safari Lodge offers luxury safari accommodation on what was the first private concession in the Kruger Park. The luxurious safari lodge exudes old-world charm combined with the distinctive character of the Zulu and Shangaan cultures.

Close to the main lodge is Fitzpatrick’s at Jock. It’s an intimate camp that caters for small parties of friends and families with three luxury suites. Fitzpatrick’s at Jock welcomes children of all ages which is complemented by a popular Kids on Safari programme.

Plains Camp @ Rhino Walking Safaris

Plains Camp is a luxury tented lodge on a private concession that runs Rhino Walking Safaris. The concession operators specialises in wilderness walking safaris in 12 000 hectares of remote, pristine bushveld in a game-rich area.

Tinga Narina Lodge and Tinga Legends Lodge

The two luxury safari lodges are owned and operated by Lion Sands and are situated on the fertile banks of the Sabie River in a rich game viewing area. The area is renowned for its incredible biodiversity and high numbers of Big Cats. The luxury suites are nestled in a grove of magnificent trees on the banks of the Sabie River.

Luxury safari lodges in central Kruger Park

Central Kruger Park is the largest area of the national park and makes up 30 percent of the surface area. It lies between Sabie River and Olifants River. This stretch of bushveld gets higher rainfall which means sweeter grass for grazing and a plenty of browsing trees. This in turn attracts an abundance of antelope as well as giraffe, zebra and wildebeest.

With a plenty to eat, central Kruger is also known as the ‘Big Cat Capital of Kruger’. This eco-zone  supports nearly half of the Park’s lion population as well as strong numbers of leopard, hyena and cheetah. It’s estimated that there are at least 60 individual prides of lion in central Kruger.

The vegetation is not as lush as southern Kruger but it’s still a beautiful stretch of wilderness area. Central Kruger is characterised by mixed thornveld and woodlands with sweet-grazing savanna grasslands. Perfect for easy and plentiful game viewing.

Hamiltons Tented Camp

Hamiltons Tented Camp offers an authentic safari experience coupled with pure luxury and indulgence. There are 6 superb canvas tents at Hamiltons Tented Camp which lie nested in a grove of ancient Jackalberry trees on the banks of a seasonal river.

Hoyo Hoyo Safari Lodge

Hoyo Hoyo Safari Lodge is an exclusive safari lodge that lies nestled in a lush riverine forest on the banks of the Mluwati River. It offers guests the choice of 6 beautifully decorated air-conditioned suites with luxurious features. The tented units at Hoyo Hoyo Safari Lodge look onto a waterhole and beautiful bushveld surrounds.

Imbali Safari Lodge

Imbali Safari Lodge has 12 spacious private suites. Each suite has a private wooden deck and plunge pool and overlooks the N’waswitsontso riverbed. Activities include daily morning and evening game drives, guided bush walks and spa treatments in the comfort of your private suite.

Singita Lebombo Lodge and Singita Sweni Lodge

Singita Lebombo sets new standards in contemporary game lodge style and design. It offers state-of-the-art luxury accommodation in beautiful bushveld surrounds. The dramatic lodge has 13 deluxe suites and one private villa located in an area teeming with game.   Raised off the floor of the lush river bank, Singita Sweni Lodge lies nestled in a grove of ancient trees on the edge of the Sweni River. The intimate lodge is a hidden jewel and offers guests the perfect blend of elegance and graceful luxury with bold contemporary African-chic design. It’s the smallest of the Singita safari lodges with only 6 decadently-furnished suites.

Luxury safari lodges in northern Kruger Park

Northern Kruger is vastly different from southern and central Kruger Park and attracts a different set of wildlife and nature lovers. It’s receives very little annual rainfall and is semi-arid and stark. What saves this section is the five major rivers that forge a path across the valley, the two notable rivers being Olifants and Letaba.

These permanent water sources create a tapestry of lush riverine forests and attract animals to their fertile river banks. Game viewing along the river banks is fantastic and you’ll likely to see leopard in the massive sycamore fig, tamboti and apple leaf trees that line the banks.

Northern Kruger is home to almost 60 percent of the total hippo population of Kruger and at last count, there are over 9 000 elephants in the northern belt. The area around Olifants Rest Camp is famously known for its Big Tuskers, the incredible elephants who are part of the Magnificent 7 for their record-breaking, astoundingly-long tusks.

Currently, there are no private concessions in northern Kruger Park. It’s home to Olifants Rest Camp and Letaba Rest Camp, which are both very popular for their incredible views and incredible diversity. These two rest camps are booked up to a year in advance.

Luxury safari lodges in far-north Kruger Park

Far North Kruger is remote and far to reach so it’s one of the quietest sections of the Park and popular among avid nature lovers for its pristine, untouched wilderness. It’s also the “Birding Capital of South Africa”, if not the whole of southern Africa.

This outstanding eco-zone centres around Punda Maria Rest Camp and Pafuri Camp, and extends to Crookes Corner on the northernmost tip of Kruger where it shares a boundary with Zimbabwe and Mozambique. The concentration of animals is lower in far-north Kruger Park but it’s reputation for outstanding birding is its biggest drawcard

The Outpost

The Outpost is located in the extreme north of the Kruger Park in the Makuleke region which is borders to the north by the Limpopo River and Zimbabwe and Mozambique to the east. It offers luxurious accommodation in a spectacular setting which is renowned for its incredible biodiversity and prolific bird life.

Where to stay in Greater Kruger for a luxury safari holiday

High-end travellers have a wide choice of luxury accommodation in Greater Kruger. A few of the nature reserves are the oldest conservation areas in South Africa and to legendary Big 5 safari destinations such as Londolozi, MalaMala, Sabi Sands, Singita and Timbavati.

Those are the most famous names in Greater Kruger but there are many more private game reserves and luxury lodges that have joined the northern safari collection to offer exclusive, outstanding African safari destinations for high-end travellers.

Here is a list of the 7 private nature reserves that make up Greater Kruger and the total collection of 25 game reserves or conservancies that fall within the protected wilderness. Each game reserve and conservancy is unfenced and has its own collection of luxury safari lodges. Access is restricted to paying guests.

As you can see from this extensive list of safari destinations, visitors are spoilt for choice of places to stay in Greater Kruger.

What do luxury safari lodges in the Kruger region offer travellers?

As mentioned, the luxury safari lodges in the Kruger region come with a high price tag but the trade-off is an exclusive, authentic safari experience with low tourist numbers. No crowds at the lodges and no traffic queues at animal sightings; it’s bliss. And with the current South African exchange rate, this kind of safari holiday is relatively affordable if you have Dollars and Pounds to spend on a safari tour of your dreams.

The accommodation is immaculate, the service is exemplary and the safari experience is exceptional. In fact, the décor of the luxury safari lodges in South Africa has earned its own design category because of its stylish combination of modern elegance and contemporary African safari chic.

It can safely be said that anything on offer in the luxury safari category in South Africa is comparable to any award-winning safari lodge located in Africa’s world-renowned destinations such as Okavango Delta, Serengeti or Maasai Mara. Actually, maybe even better because Kruger’s luxury safari lodges are more accessible and affordable.

Ease of access and affordability

This, of course, is relative as the luxury safari lodges in South Africa are priced for high-end international travellers. However, they are more affordable when compared to the likes of safari lodges in Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park in Botswana and those in Tanzania and Kenya.

The reason for this is the Kruger region is accessible from Johannesburg by car or tour vehicle, whereas for a safari tour to say Botswana; overseas visitors must pay the extra cost of an expensive private charter flight to the remote nature reserves on top of a long-haul flight to Africa and a connecting international flight to Botswana. The same applies to safari destinations in the rest of Africa.

It’s a scenic 5- to 6-hour drive from Johannesburg to Kruger Park or Greater Kruger and while many visitors opt to fly-in and fly-out on chartered flights, it’s not necessary if you need to keep the cost of your safari holiday down.

Exclusive access to private land

Guests are taken on daily game drives in open safari vehicles with a dedicated ranger and tracker. The vehicles have exclusive access to their private land and unrestricted access to the public roads in Kruger Park.

The main difference is guests staying in Greater Kruger are driven from the private reserves to the closest Kruger Park gate and pay a fee to enter.

It’s a win-win situation if you’re staying in Kruger Park because the game rangers have exclusive access to the private concession as well as the public roads of Kruger. There’s no need to drive an hour to the closest Kruger Park entrance gate.

The fences have been removed from the private game reserves in Greater Kruger but this doesn’t mean it’s a ‘free for all’ to traverse each other’s property. The rangers taking guests out in the open safari vehicles have to stick to their property but this isn’t a problem because the private reserves are huge and there are plenty of animals and birds to see.

Professional rangers and trackers

It’s widely known that the professional game rangers and trackers in the Kruger region who work for the private reserves and concessions are some of the best in southern Africa. Their knowledge of the bushveld is extensive and their approach to client care and safety is faultless.

The intimate environment back at the safari lodges means your ranger usually spends time with you in camp. Those that want game viewing to continue can join their ranger after brunch for a guided walk in the surrounding bushveld. That’s when you’ll really appreciate the knowledge of your guide when he or she spends time talking about the little things in the bush that are so vital for the ecosystem.

Guaranteed animal sightings

The best thing about a luxury safari holiday in the Kruger region is the rangers and trackers go out of their way to find brilliant animal sightings. When you’re paying top dollar for the best safari accommodation in South Africa, the rangers make sure you see the best game.

The game rangers communicate with each other by radio and call in exciting sightings so nobody misses out seeing the Big 5 and other excellent sightings. Greater Kruger is renowned for being the ‘Leopard Capital of South Africa’ which makes it a sought-after safari destination for wildlife photographers. They’re territorial creatures and the rangers and trackers usually know where to find them.

Heavenly bushveld surrounds

It’s rare to find a luxury safari lodge in South Africa’s safari hub that doesn’t boast splendid bushveld surrounds, usually situated on a river bank or an escarpment overlooking the vast savanna plains. The luxury lodges are often situated overlooking a large waterhole which draws animals close to the buildings and provides great ‘sofa game viewing’.

Where you stay in Kruger depends on what interests you. There are the popular areas that are rich in game and then those that are the finest birding destinations. Other areas focus on guided wilderness walking trails in remote areas and others that place an emphasis on the Big Cats and photography. Kruger is vast and the wilderness offers up an endless selection of sights and experiences.

Gastronomic delights

The topnotch safari lodges always come with topnotch chefs and the food and wine is often as memorable as the animal sightings. Many of the luxury safari lodges in Kruger employ award-winning chefs who specialise in unique South African cuisine.

The luxury lodge rates are usually ‘all-inclusive’ so you can expect three delicious meals a day, mouthwatering pastries for High Tea and yummy South African snacks for sundowners.

The luxury lodges in Kruger pride themselves on pairing decadent meals with the finest wines in South Africa. Many have their own cellars with an exceptional selection of local wines, gin, craft beer and spirits.

Pampering and pleasures

You’ll find that most Kruger luxury lodges have their own spa and often a fully-equipped gym. With all those scrumptious meals you eat and snacks you can’t resist, the gyms are welcomed to burn off a few calories.

In between daily game drives, you can treat yourself to a wonderful pamper session under the care of skilled therapists and masseuses. Throw in a beautiful view of the bushveld and you can’t find a better way to spend a few hours treating yourself to ‘me time’.

One glorious day at a luxury safari lodge in Kruger

Every day is different at a luxury safari lodge in Kruger but also refreshingly the same. It’s the predictable soothing routine of the bushveld retreats that allow us to shake off our city stress and completely relax. What does a typical day look like when you’re staying at a luxury lodge? Here’s what to expect:

Early morning wake-up

The earlier you wake up and set off on a game drive, the better. There’s time before setting off for good coffee and rusks, South Africa’s favourite breakfast snack.

As the sun rises, the bushveld comes alive with sound and activity. The early morning is such a wonderful time to be in the bushveld, with the soft glow of the sunrise glistening off morning dew, the soft call of waking birds and the fresh scent of a new day.

3-hour game drive

The early morning game drive is usually about 3-hours long, but it does depends on what you see. You may end up sitting longer watching a regal leopard in a tree or a pride of lions on a kill.

Daily game drives are in an open safari vehicle with a dedicated ranger and tracker. The Kruger luxury safari lodges don’t allow self-drive safari tours.

The morning drive is broken for snacks and drinks at a gorgeous vantage point. Everyone is allowed off the vehicle to stretch their legs but don’t wander off. As the day heats up, the animals retreat deeper into the thick bush and it’s time to head back to the lodge.

Delicious brunch and relaxation

Guests return to the lodge and there’s a hearty breakfast waiting for everyone. Enjoy it on the deck, usually with a wonderful view overlooking a waterhole or river.

You then have a few hours of relaxation that you can spend in your luxury suite, around the pool or you can join a guided bush walk with your guide.

Light lunch and High Tea

Delicious meals and tables laden with pastries are as much part of your Africa safari holiday as the wildlife and scenery. Lunch is usually something light served on the deck and High Tea is served before everyone sets off for game drives.

Late-afternoon and night game drives

Back on the open safari vehicles, you set off to find fresh animal sightings and explore different sections of the private reserve. Self-drive visitors staying in Kruger Park have to return to their rest camp before the gates close but the best thing about staying in the private concessions and reserves is there is no time restriction on evening drives.

Your ranger takes you to a wonderful viewpoint for sundowners and snacks. Sipping on crisp wine or G&Ts, soak up the peace and tranquility of the beautiful bushveld surrounds as the heat subsides and the nocturnal animals start waking up. Enjoy a leisurely drive back to the lodge in the dark and experience the bushveld at nighttime.

Dinner under the stars

Dinner under the stars around a roaring firepit has to be one of the best times on a safari tour in Kruger. Let the sounds of the bushveld night soothe you and enjoy the company of your fellow guests, sharing stories of sightings and tucking into a delicious meal.

This is because the park authorities regard Kruger as a national asset that should be accessible not only to a high-spending international clientele, but also to budget-conscious South Africans. As a result, the park is easily and inexpensively explored on a network of all-weather roads and unpretentious rest camps. And whether you self-drive or join a group safari, this 19,485km²/7,523mi² park offers the opportunity to see a wide variety of African wildlife, including the legendary Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino.

6 Questions About Kruger Budget Safaris

Philip Briggs

Answered by

Philip briggs.

kruger national park safari packages uk

Are there affordable budget safaris available to Kruger National Park?

“Yes, depending to some extent on your definition of ‘affordable’. Kruger is very cheap by comparison to most other major safari destinations in Africa, and this relative affordability is reflected in the price of cheaper packages to the park. Kruger is also unusually well suited to self-drive safaris, an option that may appeal to more independently minded travelers, and that will generally cost less than the cheapest safari package.”

What is included in a budget trip?

“The price of a Kruger budget safari will usually include accommodation or camping, some or all meals, transport, the services of a registered driver-guide, national park entrance fees, game drives and any fees associated with non-optional activities. Rates quoted in South Africa are invariably inclusive of VAT and other taxes. The price should also include transport from/to the designated start/end point, which is usually but not always Johannesburg. Some packages include a day exploring the scenic Panorama Route on the escarpment outside the park. Most safari rates are exclusive of the following: international flights, visas, travel insurance, drinks, souvenirs and other personal purchases, optional activities (such as the night drives and guided walks offered out of some rest camps) and tips. These are general guidelines only. It is important to check the fine print of your safari itinerary, to see what’s included and excluded, before you make a booking.”

What type of accommodation can I expect?

“Most cheap Kruger packages will camp or stay in hutted accommodation at one (or more) of several affordable state-run rest camps scattered around the national park. These rest camps offer accommodation in comfortable self-catering huts and bungalows, most of which have en suite bathrooms and toilets (though cheaper units may use communal ablution blocks). Most rest camps also have well-organized campsites with communal kitchens and ablution blocks. On an organized budget safari, rates will usually include meals. If you are self-driving, most of the larger rest camps have restaurants. A popular alternative is to braai (barbecue) outside your tent or bungalow. Most rest camps also have adequate supermarkets selling frozen meat and other provisions. Some budget Kruger safaris stay outside the park. There’s no shortage of campsites close to the main entrance gates, or in nearby towns such as Mbombela and Hazyview. There are also a few backpacker lodges in the vicinity. If you have the choice, it is generally nicer to stay in the park, so you can soak up the bush atmosphere at night. Rest camp gates also generally open earlier and close later than entrance gates, which makes it easier to be out and about during prime wildlife-viewing hours.”

Which animals am I likely to see?

“You can expect to see a wide variety of African wildlife on any trip to Kruger, irrespective of the cost. Indeed, the price of a Kruger safari is less of a factor in determining how much wildlife you’ll see than its duration, the extent to which game drives are tailored to the most productive hours (early morning and late afternoon), and plain old luck. Animals you’re almost certain to see on any given game drive in southern Kruger include hippo, giraffe, zebra, crocodile, vervet monkey, chacma baboon, wildebeest, waterbuck, greater kudu and impala. Over the course of a 2- or 3-day safari, you are also very likely to encounter elephant, buffalo, white rhino, lion, spotted hyena, black-backed jackal and various mongooses. Sightings of black rhino, leopard, cheetah and African wild dog are more unusual, but the odds improve as you spend longer in the park. If a guided night drive is included in your itinerary, you might well also see nocturnal creatures such as bush baby, genet, civet and various small cats. You’ll get the most from Kruger by paying attention to smaller creatures. Kruger is a fabulous bird-watching destination, with more than 500 species recorded, and you don’t need to have a specific interest to be dazzled by the likes of African fish eagle, lilac-breasted roller and ostrich. Insects range from colorful butterflies to oddball mantises and armored dung beetles, while conspicuous reptiles include lizards, tortoises and terrapins.”

How long do I need in Kruger?

“That depends greatly on your level of interest in seeing and photographing wildlife, but for most visitors, a 3- to 5-day trip would be about right. This is sufficient to give you a good chance of seeing most or all of the Big Five, but not so long that game drives might start to feel repetitive. Having said that, if you only have time or money to spend a half day or full day in Kruger, we would still recommend that over not visiting at all. If luck is on your side, you can see plenty of wildlife in a single game drive! At the other extreme, if you are a serious wildlife enthusiast, bird-watcher or photographer, you might well want to extend your Kruger safari to a week or even longer. This is a vast national park, and at least 2 weeks are required to explore it thoroughly from south to north. This is a highly recommended option for cost-conscious self-drivers whose main interest in visiting South Africa is wildlife photography or bird watching.”

How much will a Kruger budget safari cost?

“The price of a Kruger budget tour package is typically in the ballpark of US$150 to US$300 per person per day. This will depend to some extent on the group size, whether you camp or stay in a room, and if the latter, the quality of the accommodation. The alternative to a budget package is a self-drive safari. This might sound like a daunting option to first-time visitors to Africa, but Kruger is actually quite a straightforward self-drive destination. The internal road network is excellent and navigable in almost any saloon car, detailed map books are available cheaply locally, and accommodation at the well-equipped rest camps can easily be booked online. Several variables will be involved in costing a self-drive safari, but two people sharing should be able to work on a budget of US$100 per person per day camping or US$150 per person per day staying in the cheapest rest camp bungalows.”

Africa’s Best DIY Safari

South Africa’s premier wildlife reserve divides opinion. Some who’ve visited supposedly ‘wilder’ parks argue that the Kruger’s developed infrastructure, complete with paved roads and large public camps, undermines the wilderness...

The parks we visited during our stay were varied. The first evening safari we didn’t see the animals we hoped. However the full day drive the following day made up for this. We saw everything we hoped to, mainly the Hippis and Giraffes....

It is everything that thousands of others have experienced. It is soo big that it would take weeks to discover each region, but we were thankful for seeing the best that we could in a limited timeframe.

Brilliant glamping experience. The safari tour guide was knowledgeable and we managed to spot the animals. The glamping staff were friendly and they kept the facilities clean. This was a girls trip and we felt safe throughout our stay....

Clients are collected early in the morning from one of the various lodges in or within a 5km radius of the town of Hazyview. Clients travelling to the park from further away, those not staying in the area, will be able to meet their safari vehicle at Perry’s Bridge Trading Post & Tourism Centre, or they can meet the vehicle at either Numbi or Phabeni Gate. Morning Safaris are one of the best times of day to see predators such as Lion, Leopard, Wild Dog, Cheetah, or Hyena.

Morning safaris carry on for about 3 hours, before we have a breakfast break.

What to expect

The best morning safaris begin long before the sun heats up the African landscape. At this time of day, the animals are roaming freely, which means you get to see their first activities of the day, before they seek out shade as the day becomes hotter. Some of the best wildlife sightings of predators and their prey, and sleepy plains game, happen during the earliest parts of the day, making a morning safari a popular one.

We travel the park for about 3 hours before stopping for breakfast. Once you’ve had breakfast or a light snack, the tour will continue as we visit waterholes and watch the animals come in to quench their thirst before taking on the heat of the day.

We will stop at a picnic spot or rest camp during the morning for breakfast and for restroom breaks. Please a good quality sun cream, a hat, sunglasses, comfortable shoes, warm clothing in the winter months and a rain jacket in the summer months. Mineral waters are included on all safaris.

Morning Safari

A morning safari starts bright and early. During the winter months, the sun has barely risen before the safari begins. We collect our safari clients from their lodgings in Hazyview, between 5:30 and 6:00 am, while those travelling from further away can either meet us at Perry’s Bridge Trading Post & Tourism Centre, or at either Numbi or Phabeni Gate.

The mornings are some of the most magical times in the Kruger National Park. The cooler weather has the wildlife a lot more active and it is not unusual to see all sorts of predators including Lion, Cheetah, Leopard, Hyena and Wild Dogs.

We enter the Kruger, just as the gates open for the day. For the next few hours, we tour some of the most popular areas in the Southern Kruger, stopping at lookout points and watering holes, in search of wildlife. In a single morning, guests can see plenty of animals including lion, elephant, impala, and giraffe, as well as some nocturnal animals.

Guests will enjoy their pre-packed breakfasts at a local picnic area. Guides will make regular stops so guests can stretch their legs. The tour will continue until 11:30, when guests will be returned to the lodge and continue on with their day, leaving the park with incredible memories.
