Hi, I’m Deana King! 

I’m the food & wine-loving, party-hosting, adventure-seeking travel advisor ready to make your next trip an absolutely effortless experience. The Legendary King Ranch in Texas Is a Massive Marvel

Everything is bigger in Texas: from food portions to homes, the Lone Star State has cultivated a reputation for going big whenever there's growth to grab. One such facet is ranches. Texas has many ranches across its state, but one covers so much land, it's bigger than the entire state of Rhode Island.

King Ranch stands as one of the largest ranches in Texas — and in the world. The ranch encompasses hundreds of thousands of acres, thousands of cattle, hundreds of horses, and a whole lot of help to keep the business running. Located in Kingsville, the ranch and the town have histories that closely coincide with each other.

The Legacy of King Ranch

King Ranch is huge — so big, it's larger than the country of Luxembourg in Europe and the state of Rhode Island on the East Coast (as mentioned above).

Located between Corpus Christi and Brownsville, King Ranch doesn't actually have a contiguous plot of land. Instead, it has four large divisions — Santa Gertrudis, The Laureles, the Encino, and the Norias — that span six counties, including:

• Kleberg county.
• Kenedy county.
• Brooks county.
• Jim Wells county.
• Nueces county.
• Willacy county.

The Men Behind It

First purchased in 1853, King Ranch has grown exponentially in both size and services. Captain Richard King first purchased a small plot of land over 160 years ago to breed cattle and create a life for himself. Along with his friend Gideon K. Lewis, King decided to make the plot of land a ranch after a grueling four-day horseback trip brought him to Santa Gertrudis Creek. The shade from the nearby mesquite trees and the stream, the first he'd seen during his ride through the Wild Horse Desert, impressed him so much he vowed to create a working cattle ranch on the fruitful land.

After establishing a cow camp and growing the ranch, King realized a need for ranch hands.

When he originally traveled to Cruillas, Tamaulipas, Mexico in 1854, he purchased the village's entire cattle population. Shortly after leaving, King realized that his purchase only solved the short-term problem of providing income to survive the ongoing drought in the area. Unknowingly, he'd created a long-term issue: removing its source of future income. So, he returned to the town and offered food, shelter, and income to the villagers if they agreed to work for him. As the ranch grew, these workers became known as "King's men."

Measuring King Ranch: Miles and Acres

Traditionally, ranches are measured in miles and acres. By these estimations, King Ranch is 825,000 acres large. Measured in miles, King Ranch is 1,289 square miles large.

In comparison, other big Texas cities take up roughly a third of the square mileage that King Ranch encompasses. King Ranch's 1,200+ square miles dwarfs the square mileage of major cities like Houston, at 599.59 square miles, and San Antonio, at 460.93 square miles.

Acres and square miles have been used by both American and English agencies as a unit of measurement for land.

King Ranch in the Metric System: Kilometers and Hectares

While America uses acres and miles for most — if not all — land measuring, most of the rest of the world chooses to use the metric system with kilometers and hectares. Measured with these units, King Ranch is:

• 3,340 square kilometers large.
• 334,000 hectares large.

When it comes to units of measurement, the United States is among the only countries left that largely use the Imperial system. Liberia and Myanmar use the Imperial and Metric systems interchangeably but have moved recently to only the Metric system.

Compared to Other Famous Landmarks

Compared to other landmarks, King Ranch still reigns as one of the largest totals of owned land in the world. In Texas, every other ranch pales in comparison. For example, you could fit the Kokernot 06 Ranch, The Four Sixes Ranch, and the Jones Family Ranch inside Kings Ranch and still have 7,000 acres left over. While you wouldn't be able to fit the second-largest ranch in Texas in King Ranch twice, you'd come pretty close at 1.6 times.

For another view of King Ranch's expansive reach, consider how many of each world-renown landmark you could fit inside the ranch:

• Sydney Opera House: 185,555 opera houses.
• The Colosseum: 137,500 Colosseums.
• Pyramids of Giza: 63,018 sets of pyramids.
• Taj Mahal: 19,647 Taj Mahals.
• Machu Picchu: 10 Machu Picchus.

Exploring the Boundaries: Touring the Ranch

King Ranch offers many different tour options based on visitors' intent for coming to the ranch. There are daily ranch tours, special interest tours, nature tours, and motor coach tours offered throughout the year.

The daily ranch tour lasts about an hour and a half, accommodating both public walk-ins and reservation guests. Starting at Santa Gertrudis Creek — the same pace the dream for King Ranch started — visitors will learn the history steeped in the stables, pastures, and hay of the ranch.

Firsthand Experience

Conversely, special interest tours are booked by reservation only to ensure a guide can tailor-make the event to your liking. These may focus on cattle and horse operations, mill operations, or a deeper dive into the history of the ranch.

King Ranch celebrated over 25 years of nature tours on its campus during its 2022 and 2023 seasons. With so many different ecosystems, guides are never at a loss to show their tour groups the incredibly diverse landscapes on King Ranch's property. Guests will most likely see birds, deer, and a range of fauna on their nature tour.

Finally, the ranch does offer large-scale tours for motor coach companies. However, tours have a minimum of 25 individuals and the company must provide its own transportation rather than relying on King Ranch. These group tours can cover anything the previously-mentioned tours covered in addition to the King Ranch Cowboy Camphouse Barbeque.

The Diverse Ecosystems of King Ranch

While the ranch functions as both a cattle and horse ranch, the vast ecosystems around it flourish with wildlife. The decision to cultivate the ranch's many ecosystems reaches back into the 1940s when King Ranch hired Val W. Lehmann. This allegedly made King Ranch the first privately-owned ranch to add a professional wildlife biologist to its full-time staff.

With his arrival, the ecosystems on the ranch had a staunch supporter and protector. Lehmann created census techniques that monitored wildlife populations — a system that remains in use in some capacity today.

Significant scientific research about wildlife takes place on King Ranch today. Its Wildlife Department conducts surveys and research projects to better understand and manage hundreds of thousands of acres of natural resources.

Bird Paradise

Finally, King Ranch boasts an incredibly varied list of birds to watch within its environment. Birdwatchers have the chance to view over 370 species from touring the ranch. The foremost avian authority, the American Bird Conservancy, has named the ranch as a Globally Important Bird Area. Some of the "South Texas specialty birds" include winged creatures like:

• The ferruginous pygmy-owl.
• The tropical parula.
• The northern beardless-tyrannulet.
• The Audubon's oriole.
• The Botteri's sparrow.
• The white-tailed hawk.

A plethora of these birds stay throughout the year, but some migrate seasonally — bringing new neighbors to the block as seasons change.

The Ranch's Economic Impact in Texas and the Nation

As the town of Kingsville was created in tandem with King Ranch, it's no wonder the ranch continues to have significant economic contributions to the local and regional economies of South Texas.

King Ranch played a large part in getting railroads, packinghouses, and harbor improvements in Kingsville and nearby Corpus Christi to trade and sell cattle. Throughout the end of the 1800s and into the early twentieth century, King Ranch had a large hand in agricultural development, land sales, and town-building projects.

Today, King Ranch continues to produce goods within the agribusiness market: cattle, cotton, grain, sugar cane, and luxury retail goods.

Sustainability and Future Challenges

With so much land under its belt, King Ranch holds its stewardship of the ecosystem it inhabits in high regard. From the outset of the ranch, efforts have been made to preserve the environment and find innovative ways in which it can flourish. Specifically, the management of renewable resources balanced with creating a productive space for livestock, wildlife, and fauna, remains the priority of King Ranch's sustainability efforts. Some of the improvements made to the ranch include:

• Windmills at two-mile intervals across all four divisions.
• Earthen tanks at windmill sites provide overflow water to wildlife.
• Cutting shrubs to provide shelter for quail.
• "Living fences" in open areas to increase wildlife security cover.

Big Time Efforts

In addition to the ranch's own efforts, it established The King Ranch® Institute for Ranch Management, which educates ranchers across the nation on how to use a systems approach to ranch management that innovates and promotes sustainability. This program, held in tandem with Texas A&M University-Kingsville, is the only Masters of Science in Ranch Management program in the world.

Furthermore, the ranch remains a host of the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute: an initiative dedicated to protecting threatened wild game in South Texas. In the earliest years of the twentieth century, Caesar Kleberg initiated the first wildlife habitat enhancement and management programs on King Ranch from his home on the Norias Division. Since then, researchers, educators, and students study at this comprehensive wildlife research institute to continue keeping the fauna of the nation safe from unregulated hunting laws.

King Ranch's Legacy Continues

As the largest ranch in the United States and one of the largest ranches in the world, King Ranch includes some out-of-the-world measurements. King Ranch remains a staple in Southern Texas ranching, even going so far as to deem itself the Birthplace of American Ranching.

Unable to flourish without the help of hundreds of ranch hands in its earliest years, the 825,000-acre ranch now enjoys the job of playing a large role in breeding cattle, Quarter Horses, and champion Thoroughbreds — as well as continuing to contribute to national agribusiness success.

How did Ontario's bankrupt 'Crypto King' use $13K worth of Scene+ points to travel the world?

Newly released documents suggest Ontario’s so-called ‘Crypto King’ paid for months of world travels with $13,000 worth of Scene+ points while bankrupt – but how?

The details were provided in a report released last week as part of ongoing bankruptcy proceedings against Aiden Pleterski. The 25-year-old Oshawa resident is also facing criminal charges in connection with an alleged Ponzi scheme in which investors reported losing north of $40 million.

Despite the ongoing proceedings, Pleterski has continued to boast a life of luxury on social media for months leading up to his May arrest, sharing content of himself wandering the streets of London and top golfing with friends in Miami.

As part of the fraud and money laundering charges laid on him earlier this month, Pleterski must remain at his parents home in Oshawa, putting an end to the jetsetting. 

But how Pleterski, whose bank accounts were seized in 2022, paid for these trips has remained a question for many, including the investors seeking to recoup the more than $40 million.

According to the report, the answer to Pleterski’s lavish lifestyle lies in part in “undisclosed assets” – in this case, largely Scene+ points.

The Scene+ program, owned by Scotiabank, Cineplex, and Empire, is a Canadian loyalty program that offers users points in exchange for transactions using a Scene+ card, explained Barry Choi, a Toronto-based travel and money expert.

Pleterski’s points were accumulated through transactions made on his Scotiabank Scene+ credit card, but when his accounts were seized, the points remained accessible.

“It's similar to Aeroplan,” Choi said. “Cancelling your Aeroplan credit card doesn't mean you lose your points.”

Travel receipts included in the report show Pleterski used the points to pay for approximately $8,000 worth of hotel expenses in London, over $1,600 for flights to Los Angeles, and almost $3,500 for roundtrip economy seats from L.A. to Melbourne as part of travels embarked on late last year.

In emails with the trustee, Pleterski also argued these Scene+ points were “non-transferrable and have no cash value.” Therefore, he said he wasn’t aware he needed to report them.

While loyalty programs often don’t categorize points as a currency, Choi argues they operate in the same capacity; “So no matter how you look at it, those points are worth something,” he said.

CTV News asked Scotiabank and Grant Thornton, the bankruptcy trustee responsible for tracing and liquidating Pleterski’s assets, how he maintained access to the Scene+ points, and why they were not included in the initial seizure of his assets.

Scotiabank declined to comment while the matter is ongoing, while the trustee said it could not divulge information beyond the report due to the ongoing criminal investigation.

Ultimately, if the points were accumulated through illegal activity – transactions made with money allegedly owed to investors – “that breaks the [program’s] terms and conditions, so Scotiabank would have the right to seize those points,” Choi said.

Samantha Galea, a Toronto-based insolvency trustee who is not involved with Pleterski’s case, said the points should be considered “property,” and therefore, that Pleterski had a duty to report them.

“He should have known,” Galea said, adding that such omissions can result in an extension of the proceedings.

It’s an approach the trustee appears to be taking – in the report, they recommend Pleterski’s bankruptcy be extended by another two years, rather than the average discharge of nine to 21 months.

That discharge – the final step in the bankruptcy – would also be conditional on Pleterski paying $4.5 million to the trustee for other unaccounted assets, including a watch and cryptocurrency.

At the end of the day, Galea said, “It’s going to be up to the court if he ever gets discharged.”

False claim video shows 'Vampire Diaries' actress condemning Rafah strike | Fact check

The claim: Video shows American actress Candice King condemning Rafah 'massacre'

A May 27 Facebook post ( direct link , archive link ) shows a video of a woman decrying casualties in the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.

"What the hell is wrong with you?" the woman says in the video. "I'm not talking about the Israeli government. I'm talking about you guys who are still silent because you don't want to lose your sponsor!"

The post's caption reads in part, "American actress Candice King condemns the massacre in the Rafah refugee camp perpetrated by the Israeli occupation forces."

A similar post on X, formerly Twitter, was reposted more than 40,000 times in two days.

The video is miscaptioned. It does not show American actress Candice King, but rather an influencer from South Africa who shares the same name.

Post attributes video to wrong Candice King

The woman in the video is South African travel influencer Candice King , not the American actress Candice King who is known for her role as Caroline Forbes on the TV series " The Vampire Diaries ," which ran from 2009 to 2017.

The video appeared on the South African King's Instagram page on May 27, the day after a deadly fire tore through a temporary refugee camp following an Israeli airstrike near the southern Gaza city of Rafah. At least 45 people were killed as a result of the attack, which Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called a "tragic mishap."

The South African influencer, who speaks with a South African accent, later posted a longer version of the video on TikTok.

The American actress King maintains a significant social media presence, with 11 million followers on Instagram and another 2 million on TikTok . The video in the Facebook post does not appear on her social media accounts, nor are there any credible news reports about the actress making such statements about the Israel-Hamas conflict.

She also hosts " A Superbloom Podcast ," and videos of the podcast show she isn't the woman in the Facebook video and doesn't speak with the same accent as the South African influencer.

The Facebook user who shared the video did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Prince Harry, Meghan Markle’s faux ‘royal’ travels create headaches and show ‘all about me’ POV: sources

Prince Harry and Meghan’s recent Nigeria trip was such a glossy PR success they’re likely to set up more faux “royal” tours — much to the chagrin of actual working royals, insiders told Page Six.

The couple’s visit earlier this month came on the heels of a much-publicized February trip to Canada to promote the 2025 Invictus Games.

But well-placed royal sources with knowledge of royal tours worry that such splashy, high-profile jaunts could create a “major diplomatic incident” for other countries.

Working royals — which Harry and Meghan were before they decided to step down from the roles in 2020 —  make official visits abroad at the express invitation of the British Foreign Office.

One well-placed royal source told Page Six, “Harry and Meghan’s trip was very interesting since it didn’t fit any of the normally accepted royal categories. This would have given the High Commission in Nigeria a headache. If a prince lands in your patch, officially or otherwise, you have protocol, security and media issues which have to be right.”

Normally, the royal source added, “This would all be part of the planning of a proper royal tour. But Harry and Meghan’s tour showed their ‘all about me’ media strategy and how they divert from royalty’s role as super ambassadors for Britain.

“When Harry and Meghan break all the usual norms of royal visits, it somewhat looks like the royal family can’t manage itself properly.”

This all comes as the most popular working royals are not able to travel on official tours.

Kate Middleton, along with Prince William, last went on tour to Belize, Jamaica and the Bahamas — a trip fraught with political issues — in 2022. But the Princess of Wales is now out of the public eye as she battles cancer.

King Charles and Queen Camilla, meanwhile, were meant to visit Australia later this year, but Charles, 75, is also battling cancer.

“A high-profile royal visit overseas has one main function — to promote British interests: diplomatic, trade, cultural and humanitarian. That’s their job,” said the royal source. “By the grace of god there wasn’t a major diplomatic incident this time, but it’s a risk for the future that Harry and Meghan seem to be willing to disregard.”

A British official with knowledge of royal tours told Page Six that Harry and Meghan’s attention-drawing travels would cause a “medium headache” for embassies and high commissions.

It would be up to the British embassy and the host country to decide how to engage with them, the source said, admitting, “The foreign office feels the impact of having fewer working royals. It’s like having a little bit of gold dust, and you can only sprinkle it so far.”

Harry and Markle traveled to Nigeria at the invitation of the country’s chief of defense General Christopher Musa.

The tour included a visit to Nigeria Unconquered, an Invictus-affiliated charity, along with an emotional visit to a military hospital in Kaduna for Harry.

Markle, meanwhile, appeared on a panel discussion about women and leadership alongside the director-general of the World Trade Organization, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

In stepping back from their roles as working royals, the couple had hoped to serve both the crown and the commonwealth — of which Nigeria is a part — while striving for financial independence, but Queen Elizabeth turned them down, prompting their move to the US.

Other sources said that Harry and Markle’s foreign trips were reminiscent of how Princess Diana stepped out on the world stage on her own following her split from King Charles.

However, one insider said that many of her trips were supported fully by the foreign office as she supported British interests abroad.

Harry has said that “Africa is in my soul,” and sources say both the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will absolutely revisit the continent.

Navigating the biggest airports in the world can be a challenge, especially during tight layovers (also known as stopovers). While rushing between terminals, you may feel frazzled, yet the vast spaces can also be a blessing. Long layovers provide an opportunity to indulge in activities, offering a silver lining to the expansive scale of these major hubs.

Ranking the biggest airports in the world

The top biggest airports mentioned in this guide have been selected according to size alone. This ranking does not include passenger volume and flight frequency. As you will see, the biggest airports aren't always the busiest.

1. King Fahd International (DMM) — 300 square miles

According to the Guinness World Records, the King Fahd International Airport (DMM) in Saudi Arabia is the world's biggest airport in terms of land area. Spanning an incredible 300 square miles , it is larger than the entire land of its neighbouring country Bahrain. The airport owes its enormous size to its previous life as an American military base.

Despite its massive footprint, it only ranks as the third busiest airport in Saudi Arabia with just 10 million passengers a year flying through it. The airport is about 20 miles northwest of downtown Dammam. The main airlines include Saudia (Saudi Arabian Airlines), Emirates, and Qatar Airways. 

In addition to two standard terminals — one for international flights and one for domestic flights — DMM has a third terminal specifically for the royal family, VIPs, and government officials. The Royal Terminal alone is 177,000 square feet. There is also an onsite mosque with the capacity to accommodate up to 2,000 worshippers simultaneously, a residential community that houses more than 3,000 people, and an airport greenhouse that grows the plants used for onsite landscaping.

2. Denver International Airport (DEN) — 53 square miles

While Atlanta takes the prize for busiest American airport, the Denver International Airport wins the award for biggest airport in the US. Denver residents were originally somewhat irked when the new airport was constructed 25 miles away from downtown in the mid-1990s, but this location offered ample land for future expansion. If you plan to explore Denver and do not want to hire a car, your best bet is to take the light rail downtown. Taking a taxi or rideshare all the way into downtown Denver can be expensive.

The Denver airport sits on 53 square miles of land and is known for its distinctive white tent-like roof structure that resembles the snow-capped Rocky Mountains to its west. Its official airport code is DEN, but Coloradoans lovingly refer to it as DIA. The airport consists of three interconnected concourses — A, B, and C that are connected via an airport train system. 

Because the area is prone to winter weather, thick fog, and heavy winds, flight delays are not uncommon. Not to worry, DIA has everything you need to keep you busy during a long layover. Among an impressive dining lineup, don't miss out on sampling local flavours at restaurants like the Boulder Beer Tap House, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, Breckenridge Brewery, and the Denver Chop House. In addition to all the major airline lounges, DIA also has a spa in Concourse B to help you relax preflight.

Denver airport is notorious for long security lines. If your flight is leaving from Concourse A take the little-used A-Bridge security checkpoint for a quick route to Concourse A.

3. Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) — 39 square miles

Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) is Malaysia’s primary international airport and one of the biggest airports in the world. It is located 28 miles south of the capital and its namesake Kuala Lumpur. Almost 300 flights per week fly in and out of the five-story airport. Though Kuala Lumpur may not match the daily flight volume of Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), which sees nearly 1,800 flights, it shines in sheer size. Sitting on a piece of former agricultural land and encompassing 39 square miles , the Malaysian airport is about 8 times the size of Heathrow Airport.

The Kuala Lumpur airport has two terminals known as KLIA1 and KLIA2. Each standalone terminal acts as its own fully functioning airport. The entrance to the two terminals are seven miles apart but are connected by a three-minute rail line known as the KLIA Aerotrain. The country’s national carrier, Malaysia Airlines, operates out of Terminal One along with international carriers such as Singapore Airlines, Japan Airlines, KLM, British Airways, and more. Low-cost carriers such as AirAsia and AirAsia X operate out of Terminal 2. 

4. Istanbul Airport (IST) — 30 square miles

Sitting on 30 square miles , the newly built Istanbul Airport is around six times as big as Heathrow airport. Officially unveiled in 2019 to much anticipation, Istanbul’s airport is now the fourth biggest airport in the world. It serves an average of 200 million passengers a year and has plenty of room to expand. The airport consists of one huge terminal building that is divided into five concourses. Concourse A, B, D, and F are for international flights while G and part of F are for domestic flights.

If you are hungry the airport offers 'Burger King' for fast-food lovers, 'Tadında Anadolu' for those seeking a taste of traditional Turkish specialties, or 'Selamlique', for local delicacies.

Travellers waiting to fly can indulge in retail therapy in an extensive shopping zone. Spanning nearly 600,000 square feet, this zone feels like a bustling shopping centre. On-site hotel 'YOTEL' offers modern lodgings for tired travellers as well as lounges with spa services, business zones equipped with reliable high-speed Wi-Fi, and meeting spaces.

5. Dallas/Fort Wort International Airport (DFW) — 27 square miles

As a native Texan who grew up on the promise that everything is bigger in Texas, it is a bit disappointing to see Dallas/Fort Wort International Airport (DFW) is not in the first place as the biggest airport in the world. As a consolation, when it opened in 1974, DFW was the biggest airport in the world, but today it rounds out the top five with 27 square miles . It is so large, however, that it has its own postal code and city designation. It is also one of the busiest airports in the world shuffling tens of millions of passengers through five terminals and 168 gates each year.

What sets DFW apart from many of the biggest airports in the world, and is a personal favourite of mine, is its abundant security entrances. The airport has multiple checkpoints positioned across each terminal to disperse the crowds meaning the wait period to go through security is next to nothing. While getting through airport security might not take up much time, navigating between the terminals for a connecting flight might take a little longer. Skylink is the airport's free light-rail train inside the security area that connects all five terminals. It runs every two minutes to help you make those tight connections.

All major airlines fly out of DFW, however, American Airlines is the top dog as the airport is American Airlines’ primary hub. DFW is also a huge airport for connecting flights.

Planning to park at the airport? DFW allows you to secure your parking spot even before your arrival. When you prepay for a parking spot, you not only ensure availability upon arrival, but also the airport discounts parking spots the earlier you book.

6. Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL) — 7.34 square miles

Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL) is one of the biggest airports, with 7.34 square miles, and also the busiest airport in the world. This should come as no surprise to anyone paying attention to travel news as Georgia’s capital city has earned this top ranking almost every year for the past quarter-of-a-century.

In fact, ATL made history as the first airport ever to welcome more than 100 million passengers in one year. The global travel data provider OAG uses the total airline capacity from both domestic and international flights to determine its busiest global airport. According to their data, Atlanta will have 62.2 million available seats. The Dubai International Airport (DXB) comes in at number two with 57 million available seats for the year.

The airport is home to two terminals, seven concourses, and 192 gates plus it's just 10 miles south of downtown, making it an ideal starting point for exploring Atlanta . What really adds to the airport’s buzz is the fact it is a strategic hub for Delta Airlines. Famed comedian Leslie Jordan joked that a flight attendant once told him, 'Honey, it doesn’t matter if you are going to heaven or hell. If you are on Delta, you are stopping through Atlanta.'

With an average of 2,700 arrivals and departures every day from 150 domestic locations and 78 international locations, the airport is a hub of activity and feels like it.

If you don’t already have it, get TSA PreCheck. It is $78 (£62) for a five-year membership and in busy airports like Atlanta it can save you precious time standing in security lines. If you travel to the US frequently, this investment might be worthwhile.

Biggest airports in the world: larger isn't always better
