Katatonia and Sólstafir Announce Co-headlining The Twilight Burials Tour

Katatonia and Sólstafir have announced a co-headline tour of the United Kingdom and Europe for early 2023. The Twilight Burials Tour will include 31 dates, beginning on January 20th and ending on February 24th

Katatonia and Sólstafir have announced a co-headline tour of the United Kingdom and Europe for early 2023. The Twilight Burials Tour will include 31 dates, beginning on January 20th and ending on February 24th.

The coming together of these two revered masters of melancholy seems only natural. For over a quarter of a century, both artists have favored the emotional connection that their music brings over all else. Theirs is a world where “heavy” is a force of nature; where progress comes from within, outwardly changing their musical output into something almost unrecognizable from the extreme metal that carried it in the early days.

The tour will see both bands playing their own headline sets and will be supported by the up-and-coming British post-hardcore band SOM on select dates.

Speaking on the announcement, Katatonia said, “With over a year now since we played our last live show, it’s an understatement that we want to get back on stage. Add to that an album released during the pandemic with no ways to promote it through touring, it is with a good portion of hope we present you this European tour together with Iceland’s own Sólstafir. Even though a return to normality is joyous, why not celebrate it with some melancholy? This tour will bring a lush twilight shadow over Europe. Join it!”

Swedish metal band Katatonia was founded in 1991 in Stockholm, Sweden, by Jonas Renkse and Anders Nystroem. The band started playing black metal but has since become a melancholy metal outfit with influences from progressive, doom, and gothic metal. The group has released twelve studio albums, numerous singles, and extended plays throughout the course of its thirty-year history.

Black metal was a significant influence on Katatonia’s early works, namely their debut album ‘Dance of December Souls’ (1993), and the EP ‘Jhva Elohim Meth’ (1994), which featured a dark, atmospheric sound and lyrical themes centered on death, sadness, and darkness.

As the band’s sound progressed, they began to incorporate more progressive and doom metal elements, with their music becoming more melodic and less aggressive. This approach can be heard in albums such as ‘Last Fair Deal Gone Down’ (2001), ‘Viva Emptiness’ (2003), and ‘The Great Cold Distance’ (2006).

Katatonia made a comeback in February 2020, and their eleventh studio album, ‘City Burials,’ was released in April of the same year. The band continued to sound melancholy while embracing a more orchestral, progressive style on ‘City Burials.’

The band themselves produced the album, with Karl Daniel Lidén doing the engineering, and Jacob Hansen handling the mixing and mastering. Lasse Hoile provided the album’s artwork, which depicts the continued reign of the ‘Dead End King.’

The Ocean Collective and Cellar Darling provided support for Katatonia’s headline North American tour of 2022 in support of ‘City Burials.’ The tour started on November 9th in Washington, DC, continued through December with stops in a number of significant cities, and ended on December 10th in Tampa, Florida.

In other news, the date for the arrival of Katatonia’s constantly evolving, eagerly anticipated new album, ‘ Sky Void of Stars ,’ has been announced. We are already taking preorders for the record, which will be available through our shop on January 20th, 2023. If you count ‘ Dethroned & Uncrowned ,’ the band’s 12th studio album, ‘Sky Void of Stars,’ will undoubtedly go down in history as a masterpiece.

Speaking on the new album, the band says, “Our 12th album, ‘Sky Void of Stars,’ is a dynamic journey through vibrant darkness. Born out of yearning for new horizons and a desire to break the restraints of expectations, we have crafted a record that stands out as a testament to our resilience.”

The album features ten tracks of pure, melancholic metal and is sure to captivate fans of the band’s signature sound.

Katatonia has released an atmospheric performance music video for their brand new single, ‘Birds,’ which harnesses the song’s energy and desolate power, creating a truly captivating experience which can be seen below.

Lead vocalist Jonas Renkse comments on the single: “The pulse of dereliction. The insatiable need to expire. Here come the birds.”

The quick and energetic sound of this brand-new track once again shows off Katatonia’s explosive potential and their genre-bending style, carried by Renkse’s longing vocals, with the band promising more singles to follow in the coming weeks.

Sólstafir is an Icelandic post-metal band formed in 1995 in Reykjavík. The band is known for its unique blend of metal, folk, and ambient music, which they have referred to as “Icelandic metal.” Over the course of their twenty-five-year career, the band has released seven studio albums, numerous singles, and EPs, and has toured extensively throughout the world.

The band’s early work was heavily influenced by black metal, with their debut album ‘Í Blóði og Anda’ (2002) featuring a raw, aggressive sound combined with clean melodic vocals. This sound evolved on their second album ‘Masterpiece of Bitterness’ (2005), which featured a more polished production and a more comprehensive range of influences, including folk and progressive rock.

Sólstafir’s sound continued to evolve on their third album, ‘Köld’ (2009), which featured a more atmospheric and ambient sound, incorporating elements of post-metal and shoegaze. This sound was further explored on their fourth album ‘Svartir Sandar’ (2011) and fifth album ‘Ótta’ (2014), both of which featured a more melodic and introspective approach.

The band’s sixth album ‘Berdreyminn’ (2017), marked a return to a more aggressive sound while still maintaining the band’s signature blend of metal, folk, and ambient music. The band’s latest album ‘ Endless Twilight of Codependent Love ’ (2020), features the band’s most expansive and mature sound to date, combining elements of post-rock, progressive metal, and folk music.

Icelandic Sólstafir’s latest album was their ‘Endless Twilight of Codependent Love,’ released on November 6th, 2020, via Season of Mist .

The album was the band’s seventh studio effort and featured nine tracks of mind-bending metal, perfect for fans of both metal and melancholic music.

The album was recorded at Sundlaugin, Audio Grni, and Gotta, featuring art by renowned artist Johann Baptist Zwecker, and the album was set to be a multi-faceted masterpiece.

Sólstafir has been pioneering the melodic yet heavy sound for over two decades, and ‘Endless Twilight of Codependent Love’ was set to cement their legacy as one of the most innovative heavy-metal bands of all time.

To support the release of ‘Endless Twilight of Codependent Love,’ Sólstafir will embark on a co-headline tour of the United Kingdom and Europe with Katatonia in 2023, as stated aforementioned.

Tickets for the tour are now on sale, with the tour kicking off on January 20th in Tampere, Finland. The tour will visit several major cities throughout the continent, coming to an end on February 25th in Stockholm, Sweden.

Fans can purchase tickets for the tour and find more information at Bandsintown .

KATATONIA announce Co-headline tour with SÓLSTAFIR for 2022!

‘Twilight Burials’ – UK & European tour 2022 Katatonia & Solstafir will head out in January and February 2022 on a 31-date co-headline tour of the UK and Europe.

katatonia solstafir tour

The coming together of these two revered masters of melancholy seems only natural. For over a quarter of a century both artists have favoured the emotional connection that their music brings over all else. Theirs is a world where ‘heavy’ is a force of nature; where progress comes from within, outwardly changing their musical output into something almost unrecognisable from the extreme metal that carried it in the early days.

The BBC’s description of Katatonia’s “ grandiose, majestic beauty ” seems appropriate for both artists. It’s no coincidence that The Guardian’s take on Solstafir is equally apt: “ total immersion is compulsory”.

This immense tour will see Katatonia taking their most studio album, CITY BURIALS, out on the road as their touring plans, like many bands had to be put on hold.

Jonas Renkse comments “ With over a year now since we played our last live show, it’s an understatement that we want to get back on stage.

Join it!”

This is going to be HUGE!!

Katatonia and Sólstafir announce co-headline tour

Katatonia and Sólstafir will co-headline a European tour in Jan/Feb 2022

Katatonia

Swedish prog metallers Katatonia and Icelandic post-rockers Sólstafir have announced a joint headline European tour for January and February 2022.

”With over a year now since we played our last live show, it’s an understatement that we want to get back on stage," says Katatonia singer Jonas Renkse. "Add to that an album released during the pandemic with no ways to promote it through touring, it is with a good portion of hope we present you this European tour together with Iceland’s own Sólstafir. Even though a return to normality is joyous, why not celebrate it with some melancholy? This tour will bring a lush twilight shadow over Europe. Join it!”

Katatonia recently released a new live album Dead Air , recorded during the band's live stream from last year that featured a special fan-chosen set. Meanwhile  Sólstafir are touring in support of their most recent album Endless Twilight Of Codependent Love , which they released last year.

You can see the live dates below.

THE FALL OF HEARTS bereits fertig aufgenommen.

katatonia solstafir tour

The Marble Factory, 12th February

Just like the Icelandic culture, from where the band emerged, has waved goodbye to the old gods & ushered in the new, Sólstafir have embraced transition.

From their roots steeped in black metal the band, who’s name translates to Sun Beams In Icelandic, have evolved a rich & complex sound over the past 25 plus years. Never afraid to push boundaries & bring about a soundscape that wouldn’t be out of place as a backdrop to any fantasy adventure film with epic, sprawling, landscape scenes.

With 7 studio albums to draw from the set was never going to be short of content. Added to which the average length of a individual Sólstafir track isn’t much short of ten minutes. Every song feeling like part of a cinematic score rather than a single, standalone piece of music.

The four Vikings, Aðalbjörn “Addi” Tryggvason (guitarist/singer),

Sæþór Maríus “Pjúddi” Sæþórsson (2nd guitarist),  Svavar “Svabbi” Austmann (Bass) &  Hallgrímur Jón “Grimsi” Hallgrímsson (Drums) set about building something epic the moment they strode on to the Marble Factory stage.

Just like the bands sound has built block by block over the years, adding non-metal elements such as strings & piano, so did their performance.

From a mysterious start in deep blue light & smoke to a fully lit & interactive experience by the end.

Addi admitted he wasn’t sure what to expect from the Bristol crowd at the start, but by the end the crowd were roaring with approval and Addi & the band were in full flow. Bassist Svavar “Svabbi” Austmann wielding his instrument like a long sword. Addi jumping off stage to tightrope walk the entire length of the pit barrier. Before dropping to the arena floor to fist bump every single person in the disabled section.

You’d be forgiven for expecting a Sólstafir live show to be a brooding atmosphere (which it was in parts) based on their live recordings, but this band were charming & engaging throughout. Thoroughly & richly deserving of the ovation they received at the end.

As a side note I would pay the admission fee alone just to watch some of the guitar work. Absolute masters of their craft.

Lost in the mist…

The lights go out, the fog roles in thicker than James Herbert could have ever imagined for his horror novel. A emerald green hue replaces the black void. And the silhouette of Jonas Renkse, lead vocalist of Swedish metal band Katatonia cuts through the haze.

The self styled non conformists of metal certainly know how to make an entrance. To be fair after being at the top of Northern European rock & metal for over 30 years how could they not. The line up may have changed like a revolving door over the years. The sound ebed and flowed across the genres like a Viking long boat on the North Sea, but the constant is the live show Katatonia provide.

Pushing the sound & lighting of one of the best Bristol music venues to its max. And captivating and enthralling the packed crowd below them.

Brand new release “Sky Void Of Stars” is drawn upon heavily as you’d expect from the doom metal heads turned melodic rockers. “Austerity” (how apt) and “Colossal Shade” provide our openers in a show that was designed to test even the hardiest camera sensors strobe effectiveness. The band cutting incredible shapes into the mist and their darkness provides great contrast to the eye watering brilliance of the stage lighting.

The extensive back catalogue is drawn upon in the 75 min long set. With crowd rapturous renditions of “My Twin”, “Untrodden” and “Behind The Blood”. And we go waaaaay back with a sumptuous encore that concludes with “Evidence” from 2003’s “Viva Emptiness”.

The mood, stage lighting and darker lyrics in sharp contrast to the band who seem genuinely touched by the reception given by the packed crowd.

Customer

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
