‘More beautiful than Europe’: Kashmir tourism to hit 10-year high

The Indian-administered Kashmir region is attracting record numbers of tourists after the easing of pandemic restrictions and some improvement in the security situation, bolstering local businesses.

Tourist arrivals are set to touch a 10-year high this year after more than 340,000 tourists have come since January, local tour operators and government officials said, despite restrictions on foreign tourists and some recent incidents of violence.

Tourism plunged in Kashmir after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government stripped the region of its special status and autonomy in 2019.

Later, the COVID-19 pandemic cut domestic and foreign tourist inflows.

“We are seeing the highest-ever tourist arrivals in Kashmir this year with 0.18 million tourists arriving in March only,” Sarmad Hafeez, Tourism Secretary for Jammu and Kashmir told Reuters news agency, adding April arrivals could surpass March.

Along with horticulture and agriculture, tourism is an important industry for Indian-administered Kashmir, contributing about seven percent to its economy, according to government data.

Touting itself as “Paradise on Earth”, the disputed region is home to Dal Lake, which was a favourite centuries ago for Mughal emperors escaping the summer heat of India’s plains.

The lake’s famous houseboats are major attractions along with the nearby Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden, Asia’s largest, and the region’s mountains and glaciers.

Hafeez said an advertising campaign across major Indian cities and the opening of new destinations were attracting more tourists.

Boatman Wali Mohammad Bhat, 54, said he had no work during the pandemic, “But, now I am earning 1,000 to 1,500 rupees ($13-$20) a day and we expect a good tourist season ahead.”

Many hoteliers and houseboat owners said tourists have booked rooms in advance for the next couple of weeks, and the earnings helped them to pay part of their debts.

After a gap of years, hoteliers, taxi drivers and tour operators are doing a brisk business, Ghulam Hassan Bhat, 75, a tour operator in Srinagar said.

“Hotels room tariffs have gone up by over 30 percent from the pre-COVID period, and there is a huge rush for bookings,” he said.

The rush is so strong that tour operators said they are having a hard time finding bookings for their clients as hotels are between 80 percent to 90 percent full and airfares have increased.

“Hotel rooms are not available in good locations,” said Pronab Sarkar, a New Delhi-based tour operator and the past president of the Indian Association of Tour Operators.

Many high-end tourists from wealthier Indian regions such as Gujarat, Delhi and Mumbai were opting for the Kashmir valley instead of destinations in Europe because of pandemic-related uncertainty, operators said.

“We have limited high-end accommodations and commercial transport services here which is a major challenge for us,” said Mohammad Yasin Tuman, Managing Partner Mascot Travels.

But the tourists are not bothered. Navdeep Singh and his wife Gurpreet Kaur came to Kashmir from Australia, saying they were mesmerised by its beauty.

“I have travelled all over Europe but this place is more beautiful. People are warm and friendly,” he said.

Jammu And Kashmir State Presentation

Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) is a Union Territory (UT) of India, located in the country’s northern part, and a global tourist destination. In addition to traditional recreational tourism, a vast scope exists for adventure, pilgrimage, spiritual, and health tourism.

The economy is primarily services based and agri-oriented. At current prices, the GSDP of J&K has been estimated at Rs. 2.31 trillion (US$ 27.95 billion) in 2023-24. The UT’s GSDP increased at a CAGR of 8.84% between 2018-19 and 2023-24.

A vast natural resource base has enabled J&K to develop land for cultivating major fruits. With varied agro-climatic conditions, the scope for horticulture is significantly high in J&K. Food processing and agro-based industries (excluding conventional grinding and extraction units) thrive in the UT. J&K has an ideal climate for floriculture and an enormous assortment of flora and fauna. J&K has Asia’s largest tulip garden.

J&K’s handicrafts are world famous and the traditional handicraft industry has emerged as a large industry. Due to its large employment base and export potential, the industry has been receiving priority attention of the government. The UT is also famous for its small-scale and cottage industries such as carpet weaving, silks, shawls, basketry, pottery, copper and silverware, papier-mâché, and walnut wood. The cottage handicrafts industry provides direct and gainful employment to around 340,000 artisans.

As of April 30, 2023, J&K had a total installed power-generation capacity of 3,516.07 MW, comprising 1,866.08 MW under central utilities, 1,543.17 MW (state utilities) and 106.82 MW (private utilities)

Total exports from J&K stood at US$ 89.77 million in FY 2022-23 (until August 2022).

The following are some of the major initiatives taken by the Government to promote Jammu & Kashmir as an investment destination:

  • According to the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), cumulative FDI inflow in J&K was valued at US$07 million between October 2019-March 2023.
  • Under the State Budget 2023-24, Rs. 2,928.04 crore (US$ 357.4 million) has been allocated for housing and urban development.
  • Raw silk production stood at 98 MT in FY 2021-22 in Jammu & Kashmir
  • In FY 2021-22, exports of drug formulations and biologicals from the union territory stood at US$ 48.18 million, which accounted for 24.2% of the total exports.
  • Total tourist arrivals to the UT reached 113.16 million in 2021
  • In 2021-22, total production of horticulture crops in the UT is expected to be 3,580.82 thousand metric tonnes. In 2021-22, the total production of vegetables and fruits in the state was estimated at 1,338.27 thousand metric tonnes and 2,237.87 thousand metric tonnes, respectively.
  • In March 2022, the UAE pledged to invest Rs. 3,000 crore (US$ 391.8 million) in J&K.
  • J&K has an industrial policy that offers attractive incentives along with a single-window clearance mechanism. Land is allotted at concessional rates in industrial areas on lease for 90 years.
  • National Highway Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL) is developing five tunnels in the UT at a cost of US$ 3.42 million. The tunnels will have all weather access and will be completed by 2024.
  • In FY23, 543 new projects with a total cost of Rs. 2,237 crore (US$ 292.2 million) will be sanctioned with NABARD funding.
  • An elevated light metro rail system is expected to be rolled out in 2022-23 and is likely to be completed in 2026. This will reduce the traffic congestion in Srinagar & Jammu.
  • In April 2021, the government of Jammu & Kashmir signed 456 memorandum of understanding (MOUs) with various firms for a potential investment worth Rs. 23,152 crore (US$ 3.17 billion).

  • In October 2020, construction work has started on the Zozila Tunnel at J&K. The tunnel will provide all-weather connectivity on NH-1 between Srinagar Valley and Leh (Ladakh Plateau) and will bring about an all-round Jammu & Kashmir economic and sociocultural integration (UTs of J&K and Ladakh). It involves building a 14.15-km long tunnel under the Zojila pass on NH-1, linking Srinagar and Leh via Dras & Kargil.

Kashmir witnesses highest-ever tourist footfall in 7 years

According to the official, 6,327 tourists had visited Kashmir in November 2020 which is way lesser than the current figure of nearly 1,27,000.

A total of 1,27,605 tourists visited Kashmir in November this year which is more than all the figures in the month in the past seven years, according to the Jammu and Kashmir government officials. The officials are planning to organise various festivals for the Winter season in the mountain Union Territory.

Speaking to ANI, Director, Tourism Kashmir, Dr GN Itoo said, "On the direction of the LG, we conducted some of the iconic festivals like houseboat festival, the Sufi festival in which the national level celebrities had participated and also literary festival because of which a buzz was created at the national as well as the international level. So the tourists from all over the world preferred visiting Kashmir. Almost 1,27,000 tourists have visited in November and almost 93,000 tourists have visited in October. It is the first time in the past 7 years, that tourists in such large number have turned up in October and November."

Itoo further said that this is the result of a vigorous campaign including the roadshows in the country to promote tourism in Kashmir along with other measures to attract the tourists after the second wave of COVID-19.

"The department has started a vigorous promotional campaign after the first wave of COVID-19. We have conducted almost 21 roadshows within the country. When the second wave hit the country, we vaccinated all the members of the tour and travel fraternity as a confidence-building measure," he said.

Talking about the future plans of the government for the Winter season after attracting a record number of tourists in the Autumn season, the Director said that they are planning to celebrate International Mountain Day and Christmas in a big way.

"We have planned some initiatives for the winter season. We have International Mountain Day on December 11. It will be celebrated in a big way because mountain tourism is also a big attraction in Kashmir. We have planned snow carnivals during Christmas and New Year. So we expect that more tourists will visit then," he said.

Speaking to ANI, a tourist at the Dal Lake, Neeta, calling Kashmir heaven said that people should visit Kashmir at least once in a lifetime.

"I found it to be more beautiful than what I had heard. It was a surprise for me, I did not know that we are visiting Kashmir. It is an awesome experience and I will explain it to others when I return to Jaipur and suggest them to visit Kashmir at least once. It is indeed a heaven," she said.

Talking about the hospitality of the people of Kashmir, the visitor said that the behaviour of the people was cooperative.

Another tourist, Sunil who visited Kashmir for the second time in the autumn season said, "The weather is really nice, we do not have such weather at our place. We visited here in January as well and witnessed the snowfall, it was really mesmerizing. The people are very cooperative, and the food is delicious as well. I would like to tell people to visit Kashmir at least once in a lifetime."

A first time visitor in Kashmir, Sanchita said, "It is my first visit to Kashmir and it is beautiful. The locals are really helpful and supportive. They are really sweet people. I would recommend people to visit Kashmir, as we have heard that it is a heaven on Earth, it indeed is. I am really excited to see more places here."

Speaking to ANI, Professor of School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, University of Jammu, Parikshit Manhas lauded the efforts of the government in reviving the tourism in Kashmir and suggested involving the professionals in the strategy building for taking the tourism in the Union Territory to newer heights.

"The way that the government made efforts to revive tourism after the second wave of COVID-19, the revenue of Jammu and Kashmir is dependent on tourism. All the problems have not been solved but the efforts have been put in. The figures are the representation of such efforts. If the government involves the professionals in the strategy building, then I think our tourism will reach newer highest," he said.

Kashmir's tourism sector sees steady increase in tourist footfall despite COVID-19

Kashmir's tourism sector sees steady increase in tourist footfall despite COVID-19

The arrival of spring in 2021 brought an important turnaround in Jammu and Kashmir’s tourism sector. As the devastating first wave of COVID-19 ebbed away, encouraging economies across the globe to open up, the Union Territory, specially Valley, registered a steady rise in tourist footfall.

The fortuitous surge in tourist activities was primarily driven by the changing itineraries of the domestic globetrotters. They were confined to the country due to the restrictions on international travel. However, India recorded its best international tourist footfall numbers in the third quarter on 2021 and international tourist arrivals increased globally by 58 per cent between July-September 2021 compared to the same period of 2020, according to the UN World Tourism Organisation.

At the start of the year, a glimmer of hope emerged on the horizon for Kashmir’s tourism sector. The hope soon turned into a bonanza, with the tourist footfall steadily rising as the year progressed.

Every new month of 2021 broke records in terms of footfall.

By the time the autumn season was at its peak, Srinagar airport had set a new record with 3.5 million arrivals, and the foothills of the Pir Panjal and Zabarwan were hosting national and international golf tournaments with hundreds of top golfers from the country and abroad participating.

The year ended with the peak footfall of nearly 1.5 lakh arrivals in December, the highest monthly figure recorded in many years.

More than six lakh tourists visited Kashmir in a year that was largely lost to the uncertainties of COVID-19, even though the economic situation had improved globally. Of these six lakh tourists, 99 per cent were domestic tourists, many of them from the high-end category, which was also indicated by high air traffic.

“It is the beginning of a new chapter. We are confident that our efforts to promote Kashmir as a tourism destination and the involvement of local stakeholders played a key role in the turnaround,” commissioner secretary, tourism, Sarmad Hafeez, said.

“Apart from local tourists, we witnessed a large flow of high-end tourists in last year. There were people who wanted to go to other tourist destinations to spend their holidays but couldn’t go due to COVID-19 pandemic, and we grabbed the opportunity and attracted them to Kashmir,” Hafeez added.

Kashmir attracted tourists despite two adverse factors; one, the looming threat of the novel coronavirus kept humanity on edge last year, too, due to its ability to churn out new variants. Two, Kashmir being pulled into a vortex of fear and uncertainty due to a spree of targeted killings involving members of minority communities, migrant workers and security forces.

“It is a good sign,” explained a hotelier in Gulmarg, who did not wish to be named. “For a long time, we have been demanding that the political situation should be delinked from the tourism sector. It concerns the livelihood of thousands of people, and now it seems to be happening at the right time.”

But even though Kashmir has started showing on the itinerary of both high-end and budget tourists, the turmoil of the past three decades has stagnated the development of the tourism sector. According to independent estimates, Kashmir cannot accommodate more than 200,000 tourists on a single day.

According to the official details of the Tourism Department Kashmir, the total registered capacity for tourist accommodation in Kashmir is 62,488 beds which include all the hotels of A, B and C category and also the Guest Houses and Houseboats. The ‘A’ category hotels in Srinagar have 8,778-bed capacity, ‘B’ category hotels in Srinagar have 7,036 bed capacity, ‘C’ category hotels in Srinagar have 10,500 bed capacity, Guest Houses have17,114 bed capacity and the registered operational Houseboats have 4,462 bed capacity.

“Srinagar has the highest number of hotels in Kashmir, with estimates putting the number of beds around 48,000,” said Dr Alyas Ahmad, deputy director registration, Tourism Kashmir.

Gulmarg, one of the most preferred and most known tourist destinations in Kashmir, has got just around 800 hotel rooms with a bed capacity of 1,600. Pahalgam, the second most popular in Kashmir, is better placed with 5,000 hotel rooms with 10,000 bed capacity.

While the massive human efforts and an advertising blitzkrieg to attract tourists to Kashmir seem to be bearing fruits, the administration has struggled to focus on the basics. Sonamarg, one of the least explored destinations, can’t accommodate more than 1,500 tourists on a single night. Other tourist destinations such as Yusmarg and Doodhpathri are equally underdeveloped, offering combined accommodation capacity for not more than a few hundred tourists.

However, the government has taken many initiatives to ensure smooth tourism during the winter season. For example: ensuring fewer power cuts at famed destinations. “This winter, we kept Sonmarg and Pahalgam tourist destinations open which would traditionally remain closed during winters,” said Hafeez.

He added that the government ensured uninterrupted power supply. “It is after decades that Pahalgam is currently witnessing 50 per cent occupancy during peak winter. The tourists would usually prefer Gulmarg in winter, but the places like Pahalgam and Sonmarg are no less beautiful in the winter season,” he added.

The private stakeholders associated with tourism have appreciated the efforts taken by the administration and the tourism department. “Despite the third wave of the COVID-19  hampering the tourism sector across the world, we have got good business,” said Farooq Kathoo, president, Travel Agents Association of Kashmir (TAAK).

He further said that the hotels in Kashmir currently have an occupancy of over 90 per cent despite the Omicron wave. The hotels are booked till the end of February 2022.

“We are getting bookings for summer also, and the bookings will increase because of the receding cases of COVID-19,” said Farooq.

He also said that Kashmir witnessed a significant number of high-end tourists since the pandemic started as most tourist destinations across the world were restricted.

“All our the rooms are completely sold out till the end of the March 2022,” said Idrees Maqbool of The Khyber Resorts, Gulmarg.

The inclement weather also tested the resilience of the tourism industry on many levels. Due to snow accumulation and dangerous road conditions, the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway remained out of bounds for several days while the operations at Srinagar international airport were hit badly due to the lack of facilities for making the runway safe for take-off and landing of flights.

For a long time the issue of sky-rocketing airfares had adverse impact on the tourism sector in Kashmir. Whenever tourist footfall began picking up, airfares would shoot through the roof, thus discouraging tourists from coming to the Valley.

At times, the cost of flying to Dubai from Delhi would be less than the cost of coming to Kashmir. But the government has also succeeded in keeping a check on prices.

“The uncontrolled airfares was a big issue which would hamper the tourism flow to Kashmir,” said Sarmad Hafeez. “The government took cognizance of it and kept it under control.”

With the industry expanding gradually into the areas of adventure, religion and cultural tourism, shining a light on the rich heritage and natural beauty of Kashmir, the administration needs to do more.

In his three-day visit to Dubai, Lieutenant-Governor Manoj Sinha unveiled plans to allow foreign companies to invest in Kashmir’s promising real estate sector. The people in Kashmir are hopeful that private investment in Kashmir will open new opportunities for employment and a better economy for people.

“The unemployment rate in Kashmir is increasing every day, and the government is not able to absorb all the aspirants in the public sector,” said Faisal Wani, a postgraduate student.

“Private invesment is a better option, and we are hopeful that the initiatives by the government to invite private investors would be a success soon,” Wani added.

SRINAGAR: With a record over 2.5 lakh tourists visiting Kashmir in the first two months of this year, the Director of Tourism Kashmir is hopeful that Kashmir will witness a record bumper tourism season this year as they are expecting two to three times more tourist inflow to the Valley this year as compared to the last year.

Director of Tourism Kashmir Faz Lul Haseeb said that the overall tourism scene in Kashmir is good and a record over 2.5 lakh tourists visited the Valley in the first two months. He said the ski-tourist resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir was packed while hotels in south Kashmir’s Pahalgam resort, which used to be empty during winter, witnessed 70-80 per cent occupancy in the winter.

Haseeb said that all the tourism stakeholders in the Valley are upbeat about the tourist inflow and it is expected that tourist footfall will pick up with the onset of spring. He said if all goes well, the tourist footfall will be better than the last year. “Our effort is going in this direction and we are expecting a bumper tourist season this year. In fact, we are expecting two to three times more tourist inflow to the Valley this year as compared to last year,” he added. An all-time high of over 2.7 million tourists including 3.6 lakh Amarnath yatris visited Kashmir last year.

With the onset of spring, the tourism department plans to hold spring festivals at the tourist resort of Yousmarg in central Kashmir, Badamwaer in Srinagar, and many other places in the Valley. Asia’s largest Tulip garden in Srinagar spread over 30 hectares of land will be thrown open to the public by the end of this month. The flower carpet of 15 lakh tulips of different varieties of colours and fragrances unique to Kashmir will be attracting tourists.

Director Tourism said they have already identified 75 offbeat tourist destinations in the Valley and each of these offbeat destinations is open.  “We are trying to ensure basic infrastructure through homestays and tented colonies at these places until hotels are constructed there.”

“We offer some of the best locations and best activities that tourists can indulge in. We want to keep tourists engaged at recreational sites. We are starting a weekly rock climbing event and it has been an instant hit. We will also be starting white water rafting and paragliding to add more attraction to the travellers visiting Valley,” he said. According to Haseeb, Kashmir has a lot of potential, and offers a lot to tourists, including rock climbing, hiking, camping, angling, trekking, exploration and skiing (in winter). “It has everything and it is a beautiful and picturesque place,” he added.

Asked whether foreign tourists are visiting Kashmir, he said, “Yes, of course. There were a significant number of arrivals of foreign tourists this year and last year too. We hope it will pick up further.” The tourism department is planning to tap the South East Asian and European markets by holding tourism roadshows there to sell Kashmir as a “safe and secure tourism destination.” The Bollywood filmmakers, Haseeb said, are also returning to Kashmir.

J&K has registered a record over 2 crore tourist arrivals this year with officials crediting the G20 events held in the valley.

'Kashmir is heaven and we loved to be here': J&K saw record tourist arrival in 2023

Srinagar: The year 2023 proved to be a particularly good year for the tourism industry in Jammu and Kashmir with a record arrival of over 2 crore tourists.

"So, 2023 has been one of the most phenomenal years in terms of tourism in Jammu and Kashmir. By the 7th of December this year, we already crossed the figure of 2 crore (tourist arrivals). Last year, we reached 1.88 crore. This year, we have breached that figure and I am expecting by 31st December, that figure will be crossed in a big way," Secretary Tourism Syed Abid said.

According to the J&K tourism department, the Union Territory witnessed a surge in foreign tourist arrivals in 2023. A large part of those arrivals was due to several G20 events being hosted across the erstwhile state, including in Srinagar.

"In terms of foreign tourist arrivals, this is a very positive trend after many decades. It has provided a massive fillip to the local economy. Now you know that tourism contributes somewhere around 7.3 percent of our GSDP, in the economy of Jammu and Kashmir. And close to around 2.2 million jobs directly and indirectly," Abid said.

According to the Tourism Department, the promotion of rural, remote, and relatively lesser-known tourist destinations also contributed to the tourist boom in 2023. "One of the most important factors that the government has done is that border tourism is being promoted in a big way. So, we have a long LoC and you are aware that a lot of people are now venturing into these areas with the active support of the army and the tourism department. And one of the core focus areas has also been to provide tourists with a pleasurable experience. We have a lot of pilgrim tourism this year. We have a lot of experience in rural tourism," he said.

Officials in the Tourism Department state that the government promoted as many as 75 offbeat destinations in the Union Territory, to mark 75 years of India's independence. "Some of these include, Bhaderwah, Doodhpathri, Yousmarg, Verinag, Lolab, Bangus, Basholi and other destinations across J&K, including Poonch, Rajouri, Doda, Kishtwar, Bhaderwah and so on," they said

Another reason for the visitor boom has been the warm hospitality tourists experience in Kashmir. Almost universally, visitors to the Union Territory express the feeling of having enjoyed a unique and unforgettable experience during their visits. "It's truly heaven. I have been to Switzerland. To be frank, it is comparable and you can truly say Kashmir is like Switzerland for India, definitely," said Asif Mehdi, a tourist from Mumbai.

Sneha, another tourist from Mumbai said she loved being in Kashmir. "It is said that Kashmir is the heaven of India and we are in heaven. We felt that way. ," she said. Asked what places she visited, Sneha said: "Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Srinagar and Sonamarg. I enjoyed all the places but the best of all was Sonamarg.”

In addition to horticulture, the tourism industry forms the backbone of Jammu and Kashmir's economy according to industry experts. Farooq Kuthoo, a Travel Agent & Executive Committee Member, Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) said G20 sent a positive message across the globe.

"This year we've had a record number of tourists visiting the Valley, both within the country as well as abroad. We've had a good footfall of foreign tourists also. After the G20 summit, a strong and positive message was sent across the globe." Stakeholders express optimism about 2024 being another record-breaking year for the tourism sector in Jammu and Kashmir. (With PTI inputs)

Piyush Mishra's role in 'Illegal 3' similar to his life's graph: 'Always a zig-zag'

  •   Tue, May 28 2024 02:31:39 PM

Mumbai, May 28 (IANS):  Piyush Mishra, who essays the role of Janardhan Jaitley in the courtroom drama 'Illegal 3', has revealed insights into his character arc in the new season, saying the graph is similar to my life, always 'zig-zag'.

Speaking about the journey of his character Janardhan, Piyush shared: "There are no dull moments in this season. 'Illegal 3 ke scripting ne show ko nyay diya hai' (The scripting of 'Illegal 3' has done justice to the show). Obviously, the incidents are inspired by real events."

"In the previous seasons, my character was manipulative and shrewd. This season will show a more relatable arc of my character. 'Janardhan Jaitley patthar dil nahi hai, woh akele kone mai rota hai' (Janardhan Jaitley is not stone-hearted, he cries alone in the corner), this is what we will know in this season. I feel that gave more depth to the character, and I thoroughly enjoyed playing it," shared Piyush, who is known for his work in movies like 'Happy Bhag Jayegi', 'Gangs of Wasseypur', and 'Lahore', among many others.

Piyush added that he is extremely satisfied with his role and that the growth is extraordinary.

"I did well in the first season, but poorly in the second, and I was not satisfied. It's similar to my life's graph, which is always zig-zag," concluded Piyush.

Meanwhile, ‘Illegal’ season 3 also stars Neha Sharma, Akshay Oberoi, Ira Dubey, and Satyadeep Mishra. It will be streaming from May 29 on JioCinema Premium.

Twin terror attacks in Kashmir reflects govt's failure: Mehbooba

Jammu, May 19 (PTI) PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Sunday said the twin terror attacks in Kashmir reflects the failure of the government, claiming that it could be "deliberate" to frighten people ahead of the polling for the Lok Sabha polls.

Terrorists struck at two places in south Kashmir on Saturday night, killing Aijaz Sheikh, a former sarpanch affiliated with BJP, in Shopian and injuring a tourist couple from Rajasthan in Anantnag.

While north Kashmir’s Baramulla constituency will vote on May 20 in the fifth phase of the ongoing general elections, south Kashmir’s Anantnag-Rajouri seat will go to polls in the sixth phase on May 25.

Mufti is among 20 candidates in the fray from Anantnag while 22 candidates including National Conference vice president Omar Abdullah will contest from Baramulla.

“The government should answer about the two incidents as it is beating the drums, claiming that the situation in J and K has improved and militancy is over. The attacks took place immediately after the two-day visit of the Home Minister (Amit Shah),” Mufti told reporters on the sidelines of a function here.

She reached out to Kashmiri migrant pandits in Jammu as part of her campaigning to garner support from them.

“While a sarpanch was killed in Shopian, another attack took place on tourists...We want to meet the victims in the hospital but we do not know where they have been shifted.

"The attacks reflect the negligence and the failure of the government and there is a possibility that the shortcoming was deliberate to frighten the people so that they do not vote in large numbers in the next two phases,” the former chief minister said.

She said investigation should happen in the incidents.

“The incidents are not only the failure of the government but also suit them (BJP) even if the violence graph goes up due to their negligence.

“They (BJP) are frightened by the huge turnout of the voters (on May 13) in Srinagar as they feel their proxy parties have lost and their candidates will lose their deposits as well. The same thing is going to happen in Baramulla and Anantnag,” she said.

Mufti said the BJP leaders are talking “nonsense in their election campaigns” and should not be taken seriously.

“They are talking about mangalsutra, division of assets of Hindus to benefit minorities, taking back Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK)...which of their announcements will you take seriously. They are talking nonsense during election time and need not be taken seriously,” she said.

The PDP chief appealed to Kashmiri pandits to vote for her party in large numbers to ensure her win from Anantnag constituency.

“I know your problems and issues, and will try my best to address them. I am your neighbour and you should make me successful,” she said.

Hello aspirant

You should not worry as your father's name is correct. It's OK if In your class xii certificate it is written Late before your father's name .

In neet ug form all the names ( your name, father's name, mother's name) should be correct with right spellings . The names should be same as in aadhar card. Date of birth should be correct. Your photo must match with your photo in aadhar card so that you can be recognized easily,  for that always use recent photo copy of yourself.

You will be called for counseling and there will not be any issue .

All the best.
