What to Eat at Jonker Street Night Market?

The Jonker street foods are super delicious! From traditional Nyonya dishes like laksa to BBQ skewers, dim sums, egg tarts, and even sushi, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

Note : I found mostly finger foods and snacks at the night market but if you’re looking for something more filling, you can head toward the end of Jonker Street where most of the sit-down restaurants are found.

Here’s a list of the best foods to eat at Jonker Street Night Market:

BBQ Skewers

I saw those at almost every other stall. These BBQ meatballs, sausages, or seafood are super delicious and some of them are glazed with a sweet BBQ or chili sauce.

The price isn’t the same everywhere but the cheapest one I found is located near the entrance.

Price : From RM 4 for 1 stick or RM 10 for 3 sticks

Coconut Balls

The coconut ball stall is the very first one you’ll see when you enter Jonker Night Market. If you’re lucky, you can even catch a performance of the vendors juggling coconut balls.

Price : From RM 8

Coconut Shake

You can find coconut shakes at every corner of Melaka but the best one is sold at the coconut ball stall.

Price : From RM 5

Coconut Ice Cream

Coconut ice cream is one of my favorite desserts ever! They are usually served inside a coconut husk with coconut flesh and all sorts of toppings like peanuts and chocolate sprinkles or sauce.

Price : From RM 10

fresh coconut ice cream inside a coconut husk topped with chocolate and peanuts

BBQ Quail Eggs on a stick

It might seem kind of strange to eat eggs on a stick but there were many stalls selling them, so they must be really popular. You can have it topped with chili or tomato sauce, mayonnaise, or cheese. Some of them also have pieces of sausage on top.

Mango Smoothie

The weather in Melaka is usually very hot, so if you’re looking for a cold refreshing drink, I recommend getting a mango smoothie with fresh mango chunks.

The one I bought had too much ice, so if you don’t want to get brain freeze, make sure to ask for less ice.

Price : From RM 4 (small); RM 6 (with mango chunks); RM 10 (big)

quail eggs on a stick with cheese sauce, mayonnaise and chili sauce

Mango Sticky Rice

I always thought that mango sticky rice was only available in Thailand but I was pleased to find it in Melaka. Fresh mango pieces coupled with sticky rice and topped with coconut milk! Absolutely delicious!

Tornado Twist Potato

The Tornado twist potato is one of the most popular foods to eat at Jonker Street Night Market.

It’s basically a deep-fried potato twisted around a stick and topped with BBQ or cheese powder. You can also have it with chili or tomato sauce, mayonnaise, or even black pepper sauce.

Price : From RM 6 for 1 stick or RM 10 for 2 sticks

Mr Pau’s dim sums are super popular and can be found toward the end of the night market.

Price : From RM 5 for 4 pieces

a deep-fried potato twisted around a stick and topped with cheese powder at a night market in Melaka

You can also get a bowl of sweet corn at the same stall that sells the tornado twist potato. You can have it with butter and salt or sweet condensed milk.

Malaysia has some of the best popcorn I’ve ever tasted!

Price : From RM 8 (small); Rm 16 (big); RM 22 (jumbo size)

Don’t forget to sample the delicious egg tarts which consist of creamy custard filling inside a pastry crust.

Price : From RM 2.5

a display of egg tarts and other sweet pastries

Sweet Potato Balls

These deep-fried sweet potato balls are another must-try at Jonker Street!

Price : From RM 5 for 10 pieces

Half Shell Oysters

I’m not a big fan of oysters so I didn’t try this one but if you love seafood, you can buy a half-shell oyster for only RM 5 each. If you buy 10 pieces, you’ll get one free.

Price : From RM 5 per piece

sweet potato balls in melaka

Nyonya Laksa

Laksa is a spicy noodle dish that consists of a creamy broth made up of coconut milk and curry paste and topped with pieces of tofu, prawns, or chicken.

You can find the stall toward the end of Jonker Street ( here’s the location on Google Maps ). Make sure to go early to grab a spot since it’s quite popular.

Price : From RM 7 or RM 8

Things to do at Jonker Street during the day

Jonker Street is also quite busy during the day. The whole street is lined with clothing and souvenir stores, cafés, and restaurants. My favorite café is The Daily Fix which serves the most delicious pandan pancakes.

There’s also a couple of street art along Jonker Walk and nearby (make sure to read my Melaka street art guide + map for more details).

One of the most popular attractions near Jonker Walk is the Dutch or Red Square which is home to the Christ Church, St Paul’s Hill, A Famosa Fort, and the Stadthuys.

You can also take a walk along Jalan Tukang Besi to see the Chinese temples, Sri Poyyatha Vinayaga Moorthy temple, and Kampung Kling Mosque.

Hi Jeremy, from past reviews I’ve read on Google, it’s usually open during the Chinese New Year celebrations but there might be fewer stalls.

Do you have any recommendations of Pasar Pagi, sunday markets and antique markets?

Hi Sim. Sorry, I haven’t been to this particular market.

Why you should visit Jonker Walk Melaka

Melaka is not only famous because of its Unesco World Heritage status, but also for its Jonker Street Melaka, so-called Jonker walk. Don’t be deceived by the name, as it isn’t a pedestrian-only street. Despite the “walk” in the street name, there is heavy traffic at almost every hour, except on weekends after 6 pm, when they finally close the street to cars. We hope that officials will someday make this street more people friendly, as a permanent pedestrian zone would allow people to walk safely. Being a popular tourist destination, the tiny sidewalks of this street can’t handle crowds of pedestrians and in no time you end up walking on the busy street. However, Jonker Street opening hours are on weekends after 6 pm and this is all it counts! This place is great when it’s free of cars and motorbikes, when the locals bring out their stalls on the street and you can buy almost anything you want. We found shower heads with massage functions, antiques, toys and, of course, our favorite thing: Jonker street food!

Jonker walk

Jonker walk

You could call us “gourmand”, but yet there was something being sold on this street that we just couldn’t try: the stinky tofu. Because of this so-called delicacy, the whole street smelled; our noses picked up on the stench far before we even approached this stall where it was being sold. The best description we could come up with for this smell is a mix of baby poop and sewage. Sorry, stinky tofu lovers, but those are the smells it reminded us of. If you go there, you will know what we’re talking about. Apparently, stinky tastes great, but we couldn’t even handle the smell, which didn’t entice us to put it in our mouths. Vivi is a cheese lover, she’s eaten some seriously questionable stuff, even Mohant cheese,  but this one was out of her league.

Buns like panda

Buns like panda

We were more occupied with dim sums, satays, ice creams and best of all fried crab rolls. These rolls are fried in a special molded pan and are made of flour dough and crab meat. Basically, it looks like Takoyaki and besides crab, there are also octopus and frankfurter fillings to choose from. Fried food is always delicious, the fat takes care of that, but, in these rolls, the crab meat kept it light and it was a nice balance to the crunchy outside.

Food on Jonker Walk is amazing

Food on Jonker Walk is amazing

This street by itself has a lot of potential, with plenty of old beautiful buildings begging for serious renovations. If the money every tourist pays in the tourist tax and an additional tax for Melaka would go for maintenance, the city would be in much better condition. Where the money goes is debatable, but after the last news about Malay Prime Minister’s fortune, you can get an idea. It’s a shame that they don’t have a vision for this historic street. We can easily imagine it without cars, with new facades and a prohibition on ugly signs. We just hate when an outstanding building with artwork around the windows gets spoiled because of some Carlsberg street sign on the front of it. Wouldn’t it be better if every shop has some standard style, maybe a wooden sign, nothing too over the top? As we are now, more focused on our phone screen than on the surroundings since everything we search for is on the GPS apps and no one relies solely on kitschy signs.

Dim Sums

Jonker Walk

If you are in Melaka, you have to visit this street at least once. There is almost no chance you will miss it as all the main attractions are within walking distance from it. We recommend one visit at daytime when you have a lot of great bistros and shops to choose from. During daylight, you will also get a completely different impression of this street than at nighttime. The second time we recommend you to visit Jonker street is on weekends after 6 pm. Besides the reasons listed above, it is nice to walk in cooler evening  At the end of the street is also a stage, where there is always something going on. One thing for sure is that Jonker walk is never boring. But should you stay in a hotel here in a Jonker walk area? I think no! The town is small and in a walking distance from here you can find some great hotels with lower prices and more peaceful envieromont.

A Journey Through Time: Discovering the Magic of Jonker Street, Malacca

Planning to take a trip in time and explore the amazing historical city of Malacca in Malaysia? This unique destination is easily accessible from KL Airport as well as Kuala Lumpur City which makes it an ideal location for a day trip or a weekend getaway.

What makes Malacca such a special place to visit?

Enjoying a prominent position as a seaport and trading destination for the last 500 years, Malacca has been a vital outpost on the Straits of Malacca controlling trade as well as acting as a military post for early European invaders. Malacca enjoys a rich colonial history which along with Georgetown, and Penang makes it a popular historical place to visit in Malaysia.

The prosperity of Melaka attracted traders and visitors from various parts of the world, including China, India, the Middle East, and Europe. This led to a rich cultural exchange that influenced architecture, language, religion, and traditions in the region.

The rich cultural history and modern development in Melaka in the last 10 years provide a good mix of modernity and tradition. New trendy hotels cater to a large number of tourists visiting this historical city. Modern shopping malls and theme park-styled resorts make it a popular destination with families.

Top 3 Things to do at Jonker Street aka Jonker Walk | Malacca Attractions

Jonker Street Melaka

There are so many things to do at Jonker Street! Let’s find out what are the things to do right here in Jonker Street Malacca! If you have read our last few posts, there are actually many things to do here at Jonker Street (aka Jonker Walk)…

Jonker Street Melaka

Well, in this post, we are going highlight our top 3 things to do at Jonker Street!

1. Find out which chicken rice is the best.

Quarter Chicken at Hoe Kee Chicken Rice

Malacca is of course famous for its chicken rice balls. There are so many of them in Malacca, so which one do you go for?

Fret not! 2bearbear.com has tasted the top 2 rated malacca chicken rice ball stalls to give you the lowdown on Hoe Kee and Chung Wah.

Once you have tasted them, why not leave a comment below to tell us all what you think about it?

2. Try out baba/nonya dishes and desserts at Jonker 88.

Interior of Jonker 88 @ Jonker Street

Malacca is all about food isnt it? Yet another foodie thing to do on this street is to makan at Jonker 88. If you’re the type who just want to try the street kinda nonya/baba food, you’ll find them right here.

The desserts are also hot sellers here. From afar, if you see a queue, it’s quite likely that the queue’s at Jonker 88.

3. Enjoy the night market!

Jonker Street Melaka

When night descends upon Jonker Street, stalls come out to play! At about 6pm, hawker stalls and stalls selling all sorts of things are seen along Jonker Street.

From afar you should be able to hear the “kok kok” candy man who is separating malted sugar (with peanuts) using his tools, effecting the familiar “kok kok” sound.

Then there are stalls selling mee sua (a type of vermicelli) which Malacca is famous for. We’ve bought some and they’re really good and dont “disintegrate” like most other brands.

You can also choose to just chillax at Geographer cafe – a pub that also serves up local delights. The drinks are rather expensive but a small pint wont do much harm right?

Geographer Cafe Jonker Street Melaka

Of course there are street foods that you should savour as well. On this occasion, we saved our tummy for Fried Oyster aka Orh Lua!

We’ve even asked permission from Aunty to take a video on how to make fried oysters!

You can see that we actually strafe left to avoid the smoke coming from the fried oysters. The wind was blowing in our direction!

But still, the whole process was captured and here is the final product…

We believe that some joints like Geographer’s cafe would still be open. However, most chinese eateries would usually be closed on the first 2 days of Chinese New Year (Lunar New Year). You can still check out our other post about the things do and attractions in Malacca !

10 natural wonders of the world actually worth visiting, according to travel reviews

A new study looked at unique natural wonders you can’t find anywhere else in some of the most extraordinary places on the planet to rank 10 that are “actually worth a visit.”

Titan Travel — a travel agency that offers escorted tours across the globe — looked into the popularity of world-famous natural wonders on Instagram and TikTok, as well as Google search volumes and Tripadvisor to “reveal which natural wonders of the world are the best,” the company said. Two natural wonders in the United States made the list.

“While plenty of countries offer spectacular man-made sights like the Egyptian Pyramids, Machu Picchu or the Great Wall of China, it's the natural wonders that only a few people will ever get to see in their life that truly fill us with awe,” the company stated.

Want to Visit America’s Most Popular National Park Without the Crowds? This Hotel Has a Private Entrance

Not to mention some of the best breakfasts in North Carolina.

Food and Drink

Activities and experiences, family-friendly offerings, accessibility and sustainability, how to get the most value out of your stay.

Courtesy of The Swag

As a food and travel writer who lives in the heart of eternally buzzing Manhattan, it’s safe to say that I don’t "turn off" very often. And New York City, with its abundance of stimulation, is not exactly the ideal spot to chase a moment of zen. As I’ve learned over many years of traveling, to unplug, you need to head to a place that encourages you to do so. This is how I found myself a few months ago, slowly winding up a quiet, leafy road in the middle of the Great Smoky Mountains, nose pressed to the car’s window and on my way to explore The Swag .

The tranquil spread is a far cry from skyscrapers and sirens, just what this frazzled New Yorker needed. Perched 5,000 feet above sea level (it’s the highest boutique hotel on the East Coast) and just 25 feet from a private entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park , there are few properties I’ve visited with a more unspoiled, magical view than this one. Evergreens frame the hotel’s collection of rustic, wood-clad cabins while views of the North Carolina backcountry and mountaintops tumble out in front of you seemingly endlessly (on a clear day, it’s 50 miles).

Chelsea Lane Photography/Courtesy of The Swag

It is this mix of quiet splendor and charming, pampering rooms that has lured guests to this pocket of the Blue Ridge Mountains since 1982, when Dan and Deener Matthews founded the property. And in fact, I met many guests during the nightly communal cocktail hour who had been visiting The Swag for decades. Since those early days, the hotel has blossomed to include standalone cabins, an ample outdoor dining porch, and a spa. But it rose to national prominence when current owners Annie and David Colquitt took over in 2018, and even more so when they received a coveted Relais & Châteaux designation in 2020.

Today, a visit here can be as active as an all-day hike through the Smokies or as chill as a long soak in the picturesque hot tub followed by a detoxifying mud wrap at the spa (I conquered both, for what it’s worth). But regardless of how you choose to spend your days here, what permeates every inch of the property, from your Polaroid photo at check-in to bonding with guests over tricky Stave puzzles, is a sense of community.

“It’s different from other hotels in that we have one dinner seating; there’s a communal hors-d’oeuvres hour,” says owner Annie Colquitt. “It feels more like you’re being hosted in somebody’s home, to a certain extent, than a traditional hotel.” Colquitt told me it’s not uncommon for guests to meet during a hike and bond so fully that both parties come back together the following year. Indeed, by the end of my stay, I’d chatted with nearly everyone on the property, whether during a cocktail-making class or a friendly round of trivia.

A little more on that Polaroid, too: They actually take two photos, one for you to keep and one that goes into a book of hotel guests. All volumes, dated back to 1982, are on display at the Swag House for you to look over so you can see how you, too, fit into the shared history of The Swag.

Read on for my full review of The Swag in Waynesville, North Carolina.

The Swag, Waynesville, North Carolina

  • The decor here is pitch-perfect rustic: cozy without being twee.
  • The rooms are made for relaxing, thanks to ultra-plush beds and some with perks like in-room saunas and copper soaking tubs.
  • All your meals are included, from steel-cut oatmeal sweetened with apple cider to four-course dinners served at the Swag House.
  • Great Smoky Mountains National Park is at the property's doorstep, and the private entrance means avoiding all the crowds.

The Swag has 18 uniquely designed rooms in the historic Swag House and Chestnut Lodge, along with seven cabins and suites. An entry-level offering like Danny’s Room starts at $875 a night and is outfitted with a beamed, vaulted ceiling and steam shower. At the top end, Trinity Cottage , with rates from $2,100 a night, boasts a 22-foot stone fireplace, three primary suites, and a private soaking tub on the upstairs balcony. All rooms also feature a small fridge stocked with soft drinks, trail mix, and hiking bars that are free to take.

jonker travel reviews

One of the major draws of the hotel is its culinary program, and, as an all-inclusive, all of your meals are included in the daily rate. Menus here change daily, depending on the season, but a typical breakfast could consist of made-to-order omelets or traditional, stone-ground Southern-style grits.

Lunch is a more casual — yet no less delicious — affair: During the week, you place an order the night before for your brown bag lunch, while on weekends, bring the chef’s picnic served on top of scenic Gooseberry Knob. And come hungry for dinner, which starts with a social hour to mingle with other guests before the dinner bell rings for a four-course meal of elevated Southern cuisine.

While the (literal) biggest draw here is the hotel’s proximity to the National Park, The Swag also offers much to do on the property.

One of its most unique features is its Expert-in-Residence program, which brings anyone from retired park rangers to artists on-site to host informal chats with guests. Other programming veers, naturally, toward the outdoors, with options like horseback riding, badminton and croquet, yoga, and hiking, but there are also organized wine tastings on Tuesdays and Fridays. Indoor perks include a small gym, library, and a large selection of infamously difficult Stave puzzles.

Steve Yocum/Courtesy of The Swag

On-site spa The Still offers a small but mighty menu of services . Guests can choose from customized massages ranging in length from 30 to 90 minutes, detoxifying mud wraps, a variety of facials, including one specifically for men, and even an hour-long foot massage that includes a salt scrub and hot towel wraps. In the warmer months, you can also sign up for The Still in the Woods, a treatment that consists of an herbal foot soak and a custom massage.

The Swag helpfully designates which rooms are appropriate for kids under six and which are better left to older guests. The seven cabins and suites are the best option if you’re traveling with small children. The Mountain Laurel Room , for example, is a two-bed, two-bath cabin that even has its own family game room.

And while there is no specific kids’ program here, the whole family can participate in plenty of activities, like hikes through the National Park, horseback riding (for ages 8 and up), and a pond complete with a rope swing. Don’t miss the on-site treehouse either, perfect for an afternoon coloring session. Meal-wise, the kitchen staff is used to tiny diners’ requests, but if all else fails, there’s also an outside cooler always stocked with snacks and ice cream.

Deener’s Room , the Swag’s handicap-accessible room has a king bed, private balcony, and handicap-accessible bathroom features. It’s also an easy walk or roll to the hotel's main dining room. Many other rooms may be accommodating based on needs: A call to guest services can guide you on the best space.

Sustainability is also an essential pillar of The Swag’s ethos. The kitchen prioritizes growing as much produce on-site as possible, aided by a newly expanded culinary-use garden. The chefs also forage on the hotel’s grounds while practicing sustainable methods to encourage continued growth. Other items, like coffee and the East Fork Pottery dishware, are intentionally sourced in the Western North Carolina area to keep the carbon footprint low.

While The Swag feels remote, it’s within driving distance of many Southern cities, including Knoxville, Charlotte, and Atlanta. If you’re flying in, the closest airport is Asheville (about a 45-minute drive), which American, Delta, United, and Allegiant Airlines service. The hotel can recommend transport options from there to the property, or renting a car on-site is easy enough.

The Swag’s current partners are Andrew Harper and Relais & Châteaux . Both members will receive a welcome cheese and charcuterie board upon arrival and can schedule a private wine tasting.

Apple did release a Travel Case for Apple Vision Pro, but it proved too impractically large and ostentatious for the job. Thankfully, the designers at Waterfield showed up with the much more practical Shield Case.

I made a distinction in the Travel Case review I'd like to make here. There is a difference between a travel case and a storage case, and sometimes a case can be both.

The Waterfield Shield Case for Apple Vision Pro is most definitely a travel case. You have to remove the band from the headset before putting it in the case, making it a less convenient option for daily storage.

However, having the smallest but most protective case is paramount for travel. I believe the Shield Case hits a perfect medium here, and it looks great doing it.

I also checked out Waterfield's recommended companion bag — the Air Porter Backpack. I'll discuss its utility throughout the review as well.

Waterfield Shield Case review - Design

I opted for the waxed canvas bag with chocolate leather because I'm a dork who loves the "Indiana Jones" aesthetic. There are alternate leather options and 1050 denier ballistic nylon material, plus the option to have no leather at a lower price.

A close-up of the Shield Case front zipper

Regardless of the external material, every Shield Case is a 7.5-inch tall by 7.75-inch long by 5.25-inch deep bag. It weighs 1.3 pounds with canvas or 1 pound otherwise.

Waterfield is known for its attention to detail in its design. The waxed canvas is a heavy-duty 14 oz material that can be re-waxed if needed.

The zipper pulls have a black coating that won't scratch off and holes allowing a lock to slide through. The zippers are waterproof.

The interior is padded with high-grade neoprene, which is a thick cushioning for Apple Vision Pro. The small accessory case has neoprene around the outer edge to rest against the lenses without damaging them.

Apple Vision Pro inside the Shield Case

The bag feels rugged and protective. I won't dribble it like a basketball, but Apple Vision Pro feels safe packed inside.

The Shield Case is the exact size and shape needed to fit the Apple Vision Pro without a strap attached. So, you're meant to remove the Solo Knit Band or Dual Loop Band before inserting the headset.

The accessory pouch can hold a charger, band, cable, and cleaning cloth. There are dedicated slots for the Zeiss Optical Lenses if you want to store them separately.

Apple Vision Pro battery in the Shield Case slot

There is a slot in the bag's lid for the external battery. It lacks any kind of cable management, so you just kind of shove it all into the slot.

The outside of the lid has a zippered compartment. It can't hold much, but it has a hidden AirTag slot.

Air Porter Backpack

It was important for Waterfield to design the Shield Case with travel and modularity in mind. It works great as a shoulder bag, but it also slips into several of the company's backpacks and duffles without issue — which isn't possible with Apple's Travel Case.

Apple Vision Pro next to the Shield Case and Air Porter Backpack

I got to try out the Air Porter Backpack . It is on the large side at 22 liters, bigger than my biggest fully expanded to 21 liters.

The color-matched waxed canvas with a chocolate leather panel makes it look like the Shield Case's larger sibling. This bag is made of pockets and compartments and has become my new favorite travel bag.

It is built with travel in mind, so it can slip under an airline seat and provide access to the upper pockets. I can fit my entire office in this bag with space left over.

  • A side compartment holds my cables and chargers, including a fold-up 3-in-one charger I prefer.
  • The other side compartment perfectly fits my Hidrate Spark water bottle.
  • There is a slim front pocket for quick access to documents, passports, or other thin objects.
  • The top pocket can fit your iPhone, a spare battery pack, etc.
  • A spare top compartment is perfect for an optional "Air Caddy" that holds an iPad mini or Nintendo Switch.
  • The main compartment is a vast space for the Shield Case.
  • Main compartment pockets include a laptop sleeve, tablet sleeve, and zippered pouch.

Inside the Air Porter Backpack, orange interior, MacBook, iPad, keyboard, and Shield Case inside.

After packing my 14-inch MacBook Pro , 13-inch iPad Pro , Apple Vision Pro, portable mechanical keyboard, Magic Trackpad, iPad mini, chargers, batteries, and cables, I had space left in the main compartment for more. On one recent trip, I used the extra space to hold my HomePod mini that's attached to a battery pack and a game controller .

It really is the perfect companion to the Shield Case.

Waterfield Shield Case review - built for travel

The most important part of the Shield Case is its size. Even without the Air Porter Backpack, it feels like an excellent option for Apple Vision Pro. I can easily carry it alone with a handle or shoulder strap, and it even fits in my other 21-liter bag.

Apple Travel Case next to Shield Case

That was the biggest flaw with Apple's Travel Case. It was large and couldn't fit in any bag reasonably.

Waterfield's Shield Case is focused on a single very important use case — being as portable as possible with little compromise. The need to remove the band is a compromise, but otherwise, it is as small as it can be without removing more parts.

Apple Vision Pro has a unique form factor that requires a specific kind of case, bag, or container. Unlike laptops and tablets, it won't just slide into any bag without a risk of damage.

The Shield Case is a travel bag purpose-built for Apple Vision Pro and its base accessory set. It doesn't have room for a Magic Trackpad or keyboard.

Keyboard in a case and Magic Trackpad next to the Shield Case

So far, no one has built the "laptop bag" of VR headsets. I'd love to see an all-in-one shoulder bag that fits Vision Pro with a keyboard, trackpad, and other necessary accessories.

Instead, the Shield Case is meant to house the Apple Vision Pro and be small enough to be inserted into another bag. It isn't a complete solution.

So, for those trying to go Apple Vision Pro-only, you'll still need more than one bag. This may be due to accessory makers expecting users to carry some other bag alongside the travel case, like for carrying a MacBook Pro . It is being treated like an addition or accessory, but that could change with time.

For now, I like having the complete solution of the Waterfield Shield Case and Air Porter Backpack. I can comfortably carry everything I need while traveling without worrying about the fragile Apple Vision Pro.

Bag in a bag

Waterfield embraces a simple concept I've enjoyed when packing for anything from day trips to week-long ventures. It's the idea that you'd have multiple smaller bags ready to go that can be readily packed into a larger bag for quick, headache-free planning.

Waterfield's Air Porter Backpack, Shield Case, and Air Caddy

For example, you could have the Air Caddy insert ready with Nintendo Switch accessories, the Shield Case with Vision Pro accessories, and the Air Porter with travel stands and other products. When it's time to pack for the trip, each bag already has the accessories needed for that device, so all you need is to add the device and then pack the small bag into the larger bag.

Shield Case is the perfect execution of this mentality and fits my travel planning style. I can either take the Shield Case with me separately or pack it into a larger bag, always ensuring Apple Vision Pro is in a safe and protective bag.

If you're in the market for a well-designed travel case for Apple Vision Pro, don't bother with Apple's Travel Case. Get the Shield Case. It's that simple.

Waterfield Shield Case review - Pros

  • Precise and cushioned storage for Apple Vision Pro
  • Premium materials and a well-thought-out design
  • Compact, but holds everything you need
  • Perfect fit for the Air Porter Backpack
  • Hidden AirTag slot
  • Option for shoulder strap

Waterfield Shield Case review - Cons

  • Requires removing the strap from Vision Pro
  • No cable management for external battery pack

Rating: 4.5 out of 5

I actually think this is the perfect travel bag for Apple Vision Pro, at least the best one I've encountered so far. However, I can't ignore the fact that it requires removing the strap from Apple Vision Pro, which reduces its utility slightly.

If Waterfield compromised by making the bag big enough to leave the straps on, it would lose ground as a compact travel bag. I believe they made the right call.

How to buy the Waterfield Shield Case

The Shield Case is $179 from Waterfield when it is configured with leather. Those options include chocolate, white, and black leather on ballistic material or canvas with chocolate leather.

The $159 options are all-ballistic material in black and all-forza in blue.

Get the Air Porter Backpack for $419 from Waterfield . It is available in chocolate, black, crimson, and waxed options.

There are 3rd party cases that don't require the AVP strap to be removed and they're not significantly smaller than Apple's design. So there's nothing wrong with the size of the Apple case relative to function. That's the necessary size. Also, a CON that is missing from the list is the lack of a polycarbonate structure for the Waterfield case. It's going to be more susceptible to crush/drop damage which isn't insignificant considering the article emphasizes the delicacy of the AVP.

National News | Weather for Memorial Day Weekend in NYC set to be ‘kind of a mixed review’

On Memorial Day, a New York City lifeguard keep a watchful eye on swimmers on Coney Island Beach in Brooklyn, on May 30, 2022. (Andrew Schwartz for New York Daily News)

Parades , barbecues and more are likely to see enough sun to get by.

US Navy sailors walk in with the colors during the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum's annual Memorial Day Commemoration Ceremony on May 31, 2022 in New York City.

“It looks like most of the time that Memorial Day weekend will be dry, but we do have a couple of weak disturbances peeking through,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Jay Engle.

“Sunday we’re going mostly sunny right now, so Sunday looks pretty decent. Sunday night into Memorial Day we’ll have a chance of showers, with more clouds on the Monday.”

Accuweather senior meteorologist Bob Larson had a similar assessment.

“Basically the story over the span of the three-day weekend is kind of a mixed review in terms of how the weather will turn out — not all good, not all bad,” he said. “Of the three, Sunday stands the best chance of being pleasant.”

Both Engle and Larson ranked Sunday as the best for outdoor activities, Saturday second-best and Memorial Day itself third, with Larson giving the weekend overall a “B-minus.”

Veterans saluting the flag.

Leading into the weekend, seasonal temperatures will feel more like summer as the mercury pushes toward 80 degrees Farenheit in New York City, Engle said. Temps could be as much as 15 degrees cooler the farther east one goes on Long Island, especially near the water, he added.

Overall, the farther south along the Jersey Shore one goes, the more likely it is to rain, Larson noted.

While the vagaries of weather mean this prediction could change, it would be in terms of the timing of those watery systems rather than whether they intrude at all.

“Sometimes 48 to 72 hours from now it could look different than what it looks like now,” Larson noted. “We might get the general scenario right, but the timing of each system could alter the forecast.”

Founded in 2000, InsureMyTrip is the first major travel insurance comparison site to hit the market. The company has served over 4 million customers and works with some of the best travel insurance companies to help travelers find the right coverage. Here's a closer look at what you need to know before using its comparison tools.

Introduction to InsureMyTrip

InsureMyTrip is a travel insurance broker, which means it doesn't offer its own travel insurance. Instead, InsureMyTrip lets you compare policies from 25 of the industry's best travel insurance companies to select the best coverage for your needs. You can also buy, manage, and cancel your insurance policy through InsureMyTrip.

InsureMyTrip also has a customer service team called Anytime Advocates, which can help you file or facilitate a claim. Having an extra set of eyes on your claim may help you receive a response faster than if you were to take on your travel insurance claims office on your own.

Even if you prefer to purchase an insurance policy directly from your provider, InsureMyTrip is worth a visit solely for their customer reviews. You can read reviews by specific plan and whether a claim was filed. This is a great feature in a travel insurance marketplace, getting honest insight into how well a company works.

When you InsureMyTrip, you'll be able to see all the plans that apply to your travel details and personal information. You can opt to only see the following policy types:

  • Comprehensive
  • International Medical
  • Medical Evacuation
  • Embassy Visa
  • Accidental Death

Once you obtain your list of quotes, you can opt to see limits and terms for specific coverages, such as trip cancellation, emergency medical, evacuation, and pre-existing condition coverage . You can also receive quotes on annual travel insurance policies, if you intend to go on more than one trip this year.

Here are some more terms that InsureMyTrip offers with its quotes.

Best Plans Guarantee

First, InsureMyTrip's Best Plans Guarantee ensures that only plans with multiple positive ratings and reviews are shown to its consumers. The company provides a forum to allow past customers to share their experiences with specific providers. The insurance providers get a grace period to collect enough reviews. After the grace period expires, the site's offerings are filtered based on the feedback received, with the highest-rated plans receiving the highest ratings.

In short, you're free to choose your travel insurance, but InsureMyTrip's site prioritizes the companies consistently performing well, making it easier to find travel insurance companies you'll love.

Price Guarantee

All travel insurance is regulated state by state. So as InsureMyTrip points out on its website, offering discounts on these products is illegal. With that in mind, the company promises to show you the lowest prices while remaining legally compliant, meaning you won't find a (legal) lower price anywhere else.

Money Back Guarantee

You can cancel your InsureMyTrip travel insurance plan during your review period and get your money back if you're unhappy. However, there are a few caveats to this one. First, the company clearly states that each cancellation and refund policy differs by the provider, and you'll likely be subject to those terms. In addition, some providers may charge an administrative fee, which is typically not eligible for a refund.

InsureMyTrip Travel Insurance Cost

The cost of travel insurance can vary widely depending on several factors, including the trip destination, trip duration, trip cost, the age of the travelers, the provider, the plan chosen, and any additional coverage options selected.

The average travel insurance plan costs 4-8% of your total trip cost. Like your flight tickets, hotels, etc., prices fluctuate depending on your location, time of year, and more. The best way to compare the average cost of travel insurance for your plans is by comparing quotes online.

Purchasing and Managing a Policy With InsureMyTrip

You can get a quote from InsureMyTrip's website by inputting the following information:

  • Destination
  • Travel Dates
  • Citizenship and Residence
  • Number of travelers and their ages
  • Trip details (taking a flight, cruise, renting a vacation home)

Once you're taken to the quotes page, you can compare policies and sort your search by price, popularity, and rating.

How to File a Claim with InsureMyTrip

You'll need to work directly with your insurance provider if you have to file a claim. However, InsureMyTrip makes it easy to access the correct contact information and claims forms.

You can find your provider's information by navigating to the "File a Claim" page on InsureMyTrip.com . Then, select your insurance provider and policy from the drop-down menu. Typically, InsureMyTrip will provide each insurer's phone number, emergency contact line, and mailing address. When available, it also lists email addresses and URLs for claims forms.

If you encounter any issues with your provider's claims process, you can email InsureMyTrip's Anytime Advocates at [email protected].

InsureMyTrip Customer Service Experience and Usability

InsureMyTrip received an average rating of 4.3 stars out of five from Google Maps reviews of its headquarters in Rhode Island. Most of the negative reviews of InsureMyTrip talk about a claims issue with their providers, which InsureMyTrip doesn't directly control.

InsureMyTrip regularly responds to negative reviews, offering phone numbers and emails that customers can call for help with their policies.

How InsureMyTrip Compares

Insuremytrip vs. squaremouth.

Squaremouth is one of the leading travel insurance aggregators, listing policies from 32 companies compared to InsureMyTrip's 25 companies. Squaremouth also lists options online for group travel insurance policies, which InsureMyTrip only quotes for when you call their customer service line.

Both InsureMyTrip and Squaremouth allow you to purchase, manage, and cancel a policy on their platforms. You'll have to file claims directly with your insurer, but both companies offer ways to facilitate customer claims. InsureMyTrip has an Anytime Advocates team, which can help customers with filing claims or facilitate an existing claim. Squaremouth has a Zero Complaint Guarantee, which promises that they'll act as a mediator if a customer feels that a claim was denied unfairly.

InsureMyTrip vs. VisitorsCoverage

InsureMyTrip's offerings are more comprehensive than VisitorsCoverage's, which offers policies from 15 travel insurance companies.

VisitorsCoverage does a better job summarizing policy terms, offering eligibility details like max trip length and age limits, which InsureMyTrip lacks. It also offers more search filters, allowing travelers to select search options for students studying abroad, business travelers, and U.S. green card holders. That said, VisitorsCoverage does not field customer reviews.

InsureMyTrip FAQs

Yes, InsureMyTrip offers travel protection insurance from 25 travel insurance companies, with search customizations like medical-only, Schengen Visa insurance, and AD&D insurance.

InsureMyTrip is very user-friendly, streamlining the insurance purchasing process and allowing travelers to compare all plans available for their trip.

While InsureMyTrip offers some search refinements, they do not offer a filter for adventure sports.

Yes, customer reviews often highlight InsureMyTrip's customer service as helpful and efficient in addressing questions and assisting with policy selection. Negative customer reviews often receive responses from InsureMyTrip's team, which will try to resolve lingering issues.

InsurInsureMyTripMyTrip offers the advantage of comparing multiple insurance plans from different providers in one place, simplifying the process of finding the best coverage for specific travel needs.
