Jodhpur, the second-largest city in Rajasthan (albeit pleasingly unspoiled by haphazard development), has a fascinating past. Located on the edge of the Thar desert, about 155 miles from the border with Pakistan, Jodhpur is, in fact, where the eponymous pants got their name from! These unusual pants were designed by the Maharaja of Jodhpur's son, Pratap Singh, and worn by his polo team when visiting the Queen of England in 1897. It is famous for its blue buildings, initially painted to signify that they were occupied by Brahmins, the highest caste in India.

Relax at Jaswant Thada

In honor of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II, this intricately crafted cenotaph (empty commemorative tomb) was built in 1899. It features white marble lattice screens and whimsical domes, while the inside is adorned with portraits of Rathore rulers. Wander Through Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park

The Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park was developed in 2006 to restore the natural ecology of a large rocky wasteland area next to the Fort. Neglected for many years, the park was overrun by an invasive thorny shrub. After the bush was eradicated, more than 80 native species of rock-loving plants from the Thar desert were grown there. The Park extends 70 hectares (around 200 acres) of rehabilitated land and has a walking trail. It's interesting to explore at different times of the year, as its foliage changes with the seasons.

Dine Overlooking the Step Well

An exciting Urban Regeneration Project is being undertaken to transform the Old City into its former glory, but with a vibrant and hip spin. As a result, Jodhpur has a newly restored yet ancient stepwell, located just north of the clock tower. Built in the 1740s and called Toorji ka Jhalra, it sat stagnant for years until the owners of the new heritage boutique RAAS hotel purified the pool and sandblasted the steps. The area has been turned into a contemporary square with cool cafes and shops, including a Good Earth home decor store and a branch of Jaipur-based Gem Palace. A secret door at the RAAS hotel will take you directly to Step Well Square. Step Well Cafe has the same owners as RAAS and provides the best view over the stepwell. It serves Continental and Indian cuisine, plus alcohol. However, its menu is quite limited.

Stroll Along the Streets of the Blue City

Unlike the crowded clock tower area, the blue part of Jodhpur behind the fort, known as Navchokiya, is refreshingly quiet and devoid of tourists. Don't miss spending some time leisurely strolling along its streets. It's also possible to go on a guided walking tour of the area to learn more about it. You can even stay amid the blue houses: Some of the top options in the area are  Singhvi's Haveli ,  Jewel Palace Haveli , Rani Mahal, and Jaswant Bhawan Homestay .

Tour the Area Around Gulab Sagar

About 10 minutes walk north of Toorji ka Jhalra stepwell is Gulab Sagar. This 18th-century lake played an essential role in Jodhpur's traditional water management system. Not only does it provide a superb spot for photographing Mehrangarh Fort in the background, but there are also many interesting step wells and temples hidden in the lanes around it. Marvel at Umaid Bhawan Palace

Magnificent Umaid Bhawan Palace, completed in 1944, was one of India's last grand palaces to be built. The royal family of Jodhpur still occupies a section of it. Most of the remainder has been converted into a luxurious palace hotel, and unfortunately, it's off-limits to anyone who's not staying there. If you can't afford $600 or more per night for a room, you can still get a glimpse inside the palace by having a pricey dinner at one of its restaurants or visiting the museum. The museum mainly displays old photos of the Maharaja and his family. There's a vintage watch and car collection as well. If you're into that kind of thing, it's worthwhile going there. Otherwise, you may be disappointed as you'll get to see very little of the palace.

Take a Cooking Class at Spice Paradise

Spice Paradise is a spice shop run by a kindhearted husband and wife team (their unique masala chai blend has been refined and perfected over the years and is highly recommended). In their humble kitchen, they also conduct Indian cooking classes, which are hugely popular with foreigners. Along with delicious recipes, you'll get to meet a lovely family and gain priceless insight into Indian culture. If you don't have much time in Jodhpur, do book in advance as classes are often full.

Visit Mandore and Mandore Gardens

Mandore was the capital of the Marwar region before Jodhpur was founded, but now it's in a neglected state. There's an old fort, an eclectic collection of temples and cenotaphs, and a small museum in the Mandore Gardens. The gardens are beautiful, albeit unkempt in places, and used as a local picnic spot. They're worth visiting for the fantastic architecture and history of a bygone era. The best time to go is during the week when it's quietest. If you love monkeys, you'll find plenty there! But be careful that they don't snatch your food!

The main temple stands on a huge raised platform and is supported by 102 pillars.

2. Siddhanth Shiv Temple

Siddhanth Shiv temple is situated between Takhat Sagar hills and Kalyana Lake. Its way is on Chopasani Road and it is about 10 Kms away from Jodhpur.

Once upon a time the place, exactly where the temple now stands, was completely a deserted area.

Siddhanth Shiv temple is believed to be built by GauriShanker (also called Nepali Baba, his real name was Veetragi Narain Swami) himself by cutting stones.

He was a handicapped saint who had only four fingers in each of his hand and foot.

Jaswant Thada lies to the left of the Mehrangarh fort complex. It is a royal memorial made up of white marble and wonderful architecture piece of art.

The Sachiya Mata Temple is located in Osian, near Jodhpur. Osian is 60-65 kms from Jodhpur.

In this Temple mother goddess Sachiya (Also called Indrani) is worshipped by many castes living in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and North India.

She is “Kul Devi” (a protector goddess of a community) of many of well-known communities.

This temple was built by the Parmar King Upendre for his “Kul Devi“ in the 9th to 10th century C.E.

12. Balsamand Lake and Garden

This lake is a popular picnic spot of Jodhpur. It was built in 1159 AD by Balak Rao Parihar. It was constructed as a water reservoir to provide water to Mandore, the then capital of Jodhpur.

The Balsamand Lake is surrounded by green gardens and has trees like mango, papaya, pomegranate, guava and plum. This place is home for animals and birds like the jackal and peacock.

15. Om Banna Temple

Om Banna Temple (also known Om Bana, Bullet Banna and Bullet baba Temple) is a temple located in Pali district near Jodhpur. It is located 20 Kms from Pali and 50 Kms. The motorcycle is a 350cc Royal Enfield Bullet.

Om Bana, a local citizen, was riding the bike, it got unbalanced and hit the tree. He was dead immediately.

Police took motorcycle in the police station but next day bike was found under the same tree. Even after numerous attempts to take bike away, bike was found at the same place under the tree where the accident happened.

The bullet still lies there in an open enclosure. Many truck drivers and families stop by to visit the place and pray for their safe journey.

16. Mandore Gardens

The Mandore gardens has charming collection of temples and memorials and it’s on high rock terraces.

The gardens house the Chhatris (cenotaphs) of many rulers of the state of Marwar.

The Mandore Gardens also house a government museum, a ‘Hall of Heroes’ and ‘the temple to 33 crore Hindu Gods’ (The temple of 330 million Hindu Gods).

17. Shri Ganesh Temple

This temple is surrounded by various kinds of trees. In India, this is world class age old natural shrine, which has amazing specialty.

The mountain is elevated on santoshi Mata temple as if Sheshnag (a kind of snake) is giving its shadow to Mateshwari. There is an Amrit Kunda close to temple where an old tree is in the same shape from many years. Near that tree there is very lovely waterfall.

Sardar Market is a full of busy Indian market containing riots of sight and sound. The clock tower (Ghanta Ghar) in the center of Sardar Market is a useful reference point (if you lose your way refer to it and start again 🙂 ).

You can spend hours in shops chatting with friendly owners who will offer a cup of masala chai (tea). This is the true highlight of Rajasthani hospitality.

You will find Jodhpur to be full of amiable and kind people who will be quick to offer you chai (tea) as a symbol of genuine hospitality first and foremost (not at all an attempt to coerce you to buy).

It is not uncommon for them to turn their shop upside down to show you all of their goods and many are quite proud of their businesses.

It is an artificial lake. It receives its water from Hathi Nehar (English: Elephant Canal), which is further connected to the Indira Gandhi canal.

The natural vegetation here mostly consists of Babool trees (English: Acacia Nilotic), and various migratory birds such as Siberian cranes are seen here in the winter season.

The city of Jodhpur and all the surrounding towns and villages depend on Kaylana Lake as a source of drinking water.

Sardar Government Museum is located in Public Park (Umed Garden). It was established in 1909 and formally opened to public on 17 March, 1936.

Timings of this museum is from 10 AM to 4 PM and it is closed on Friday. Entry fee is only Rs. 10.

It is a popular garden of Jodhpur. Umed garden was developed by Maharaja Umed Singh. It was named after him.

The garden has five separate gates around it to facilitate entry to the garden from different directions. It has green lawn with beautiful roses and other flowers.

Inside the garden is a museum, Ashoka trees, artistically designed fountains, a library and a zoo.

The zoo houses different types of birds, local, African and Australian parrots, ducks, rabbits etc. All the birds and animals are kept in their natural environment.

24. MahaMandir

MahaMandir is a famous temple in Jodhpur. The temple was built in 1812.

It is located at a distance of 2 km from Jodhpur on the road towards Mandore. Now a school is run in the premises.

In the premises of the temple, there are many ancient shrines and houses that reflect intricate works of stone.

View over the old city

This spot is a few kilometres from the Fort, and you get both the blue houses of Jodhpur and the magnanimous Mehrangarh Fort in this shot. This spot is definitely the best spot if you wish to capture the ‘blue’ of Jodhpur. You get the entire city in the frame and the blue houses provide an excellent contrast from the other houses. The background and you will both shine in this perfectly instagrammable shot!

Clock Tower

Known as Ghanta Ghar in the native language, the clock tower is no less than a landmark destination in Jodhpur. It is the Clock Tower that separates new Jodhpur and old Jodhpur. You can climb up till the balcony of this colossally tall tower. Although it is not the top most point of the Tower, it does show appealing views of the Sadar Market and all its hustle bustle underneath. The Sadar Market is a great place to capture the actual city and its people. And when you’re here shooting photos, you might as well also do some shopping and pick up some souvenirs!

Ghanshyam Temple

Green and gold, this 16th century temple is exactly what your Instagram feed needs. As the most beautiful temple in Jodhpur, it is truly a feast for your eyes. If you wish to take a look inside, you will find the most friendly priests. They are known to sing and dance with people during prayer time and for spreading colour. The temple opens its doors at 5am and closes at 10pm. During midday it is shur from 1:45pm to 5pm, which might be the best time to photograph there as the steps will be free and the surrounding area is less crowded too.

Jaswant Thada

Jaswant Thada is a cenotaph that was built hundreds of years back in 1899. Back then, it would serve as a cremation ground for the royal family of Marwar, and now its grandeur and architecture attract locals and tourists alike. However, it is still not as popular as other spots on the list, which fortunately makes it not only a perfect instagrammable spot but also a peaceful spot. The colour and architecture will make you unable to take your eyes off it! It is also called the ‘Taj Mahal of Mewar’.

Also known as the Alley of Blue Houses among tourists, this is where you get to absorb the beauty of the blue Jodhpur houses at eye level. Wander away from the bustling market places and the new town, and head to Chandpole – the older quarters of Jodhpur – to rejuvenate. Here, you will also find more friendly locals who will be willing to tell you tales as the first settlers of the city. Blue is spattering throughout Chandpole in all different shades. Not surprisingly, these streets are very different from the upbeat markets that lead to Chandpole.

The deeper you travel into Jodhpur the seemingly quieter it gets. And since it is not yet a greatly tourist-accessed spot, if you find your way here, you are definitely going to have to have blue houses and walls to take pictures all to yourself! There is not one particular cluster of houses that is more blue than the rest, so you will have to do the labour of finding the diverse shades of blue yourself.

Kaylana Lake

Kaylana Lake is an artificial lake that was built in 1872 for rain water harvesting. This lake has always been the most popular point to watch the sunset in the city. Taking up over 8 kilometres, this lake gets a beautiful reflection of all the colours of the sun. Not only do you get to witness the merging of the lake and sky during sunset hours, but during the day, Kaylana Lake is a popular spot amongst bird watchers. Birds can be seen cooling in the lake, flying over the lake and often playing hide and seek with the watchers through the trees by the lake. Siberian Cranes are especially known to grace the lake most frequently.

Some cautionary advice about this lake is that people are not allowed to swim here. If you wish to enjoy the beauty of the lake, there are plenty of boat rides that you can enjoy here.

Mandore Gardens

Less than ten kilometres from the main city of Jodhpur are Mandore Gardens . The best time to photograph here are evenings, as the sunset looks wonderful from the Mandore Fort – which is what the Mandore Gardens are built around. The Mandore Fort, features the royal cenotaphs of the Ranthore rulers. Out of all the cenotaphs on the property, six of them which are made of sandstone stand out exceedingly. They are buildings with intricate carvings, pillars and tall spires, elaborately adorned corridors and sculptural embellishments. You can also enjoy a picnic in the gardens, like the local population. There is also a government museum within the Mandore Gardens property which contains artefacts and relics from the 6th century.

Umaid Bhawan Palace

Mehrangarh Fort is inarguably the best tourist place to visit in Jodhpur. Situated on top of a 410ft high hillock. Mehrangarh Fort used to be the headquarters of Rathore Clan. It was Rao Jodha who started to build the fort and named it Mehrangarh which means – fort of the Sun.

It is believed that Rathore clan belongs to Sun God – Surya.  Maharaja Gaj Singh 2 is the current custodian of the fort who built the museum and preserved the buildings.

Things to do in Jodhpur: A Guide to Exploring India’s Blue City

When we were first planning our India travel itinerary , Jodhpur was one of the places that I insisted on adding to the list. There are only a handful of blue cities around the world and I wanted to see this one! We gave ourselves a total of 3 days in Jodhpur, which I felt was plenty of time to see the sights, visit the markets and also sample some of the best meals we had in all of India , so today I’m sharing this mini travel guide showcasing some of my favourite things to do in Jodhpur.

Things to do in Jodhpur

Go in search of blue

First up, it wouldn’t be a proper visit to Jodhpur without ditching the map and purposely getting lost in the Blue City. With most of Jodhpur’s buildings and laneways painted blue, wandering around taking photos is an activity in and of itself.

Why Jodhpur is painted blue is still a bit unclear. There are a number of probable reasons like: 1) many Brahmins lived here and blue is the colour of Lord Shiva, 2) the colour blue helps keep homes cool during the summer months, 3) there is evidence of indigo plantations nearby and that would’ve made the colour blue readily available, 4) it would have given the rulers beautiful views from the fort, and 5) it would have attracted travelling traders passing through Rajasthan.

Whatever the reason, it’s a remarkable city you won’t soon forget.

Enjoy a Rajasthani thali

There is one meal that stands out from every other meal I ate in India , and that is the Rajasthani thali set that I had in Jodhpur.

For those of you who’ve never had a thali set before, it’s basically a meal served on a platter with an array of little dishes. Depending on the region where you’re having your thali, the platter will typically have plain rice or some kind of bread in the middle (this could be roti, chapati, puri or naan), and then you’ll have a selection of curries, pickled vegetables, curd, and other items.

The idea behind the thali is that you get 6 different flavours in one plate: sweet, salty, bitter, sour, astringent and spicy. It’s basically a party for your taste buds, which makes it very fun to eat!

We ate at  Jhankar , which is a Jain restaurant that serves up dishes that are strictly vegetarian and egg free.

The restaurant is set in a 500-year-old haveli that oozes history. We ate in their courtyard, which feels like a little oasis. I sank into the wicker chairs and was happy to sip on a lime soda while surrounded by palms and beautiful architecture.

The portions were massive, the food came fast, and every last bite was delicious . The majority of the little dishes in my thali were completely new to me, so it was nice to experiment and get a taste of Rajasthani and Jain cuisine .

If you still have room for dessert after all that food, you can try  gulab jamuns , which are fried semolina balls soaked in rose syrup. Those will give you a sugar high!

Tour Mehrangarh Fort

Mehrangarh Fort rises 125 meters over Jodhpur making it the city’s main landmark. The walk itself is a little steep, but you’ll be stopping to take pictures and stare at the grand doorways and balconies so often that you’ll hardly notice the incline.

For something a bit adventurous , you can actually go zip-lining inside the fort! The Flying Fox  consists of 6 separate zip lines which fly around the fort, and give you a bird’s eye view of the gardens and the desert lakes. I can’t say I did it myself, but it is one of the most popular activities in Jodhpur.

What I did make time for was food. I ate at  Café Mehran , which is located inside the fort and serves up some of the best samosas I had in India . It’s a nice breezy cafe and the walls are covered in portraits of the Maharajas. Another popular restaurant located within the fort is  Chokelao Mahal Terrace  which only opens in the evenings and offers fine dining with views of Mehrangarh Fort all lit up at night.

If you’re looking for something else to do after you finish touring the fort, you can visit  Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park . This park sits at the foot of the fort, where you can hike the trails and see some of the local vegetation.

See how the Rathores lived

Once you’re inside Mehrangarh Fort you need to swing by  Mehrangarh Museum . While admission to the fort is free, there is a fee to enter the museum (₹ 600 for foreigners), but it’s so worth it because we’re talking about the palace where the Rathores (the rulers of Jodhpur) once lived.

The museum is divided into galleries showcasing various artefacts like elephant howdahs (seats that would have been used to ride elephants ), palanquins (covered day beds used to transport the nobility), as well as paintings, turbans, textiles, armour and wood crafts.

It’s a fascinating place, but it also gets packed, so the earlier you get there, the better.

Watch the sunset over the fort

In my opinion, Jodhpur has one of the best sunsets in all of India, which means you’re going to want to find a rooftop to watch the magic happen .

We went over to Castle View , which is a haveli that also happens to have a rooftop restaurant. Reaching Castle View involves navigating a maze of blue laneways and climbing a series of staircases, but once you reach the top, you have Mehrangarh Fort directly in front of you. It was a great little spot to watch the sunset with a drink in hand while the whole city was set aglow.

For something a little more upscale, Indique is a very popular choice for sunset drinks or al fresco dining. This restaurant is located in the Pal Haveli Hotel, which is a luxury property just north of the Clock Tower. This restaurant is a bit further away from the fort, so you don’t get those close up views, but it’s a nice little splurge. The setting is beautiful, the service is impeccable, and they serve a tasty saffron lassi. Just remember to make reservations because it fills up.

Stay in a traditional haveli

For our stay in Jodhpur, we booked ourselves into a traditional haveli.

I’ve already talked quite a bit about havelis in my guide to Jaisalmer , but basically, these are old family mansions that date back several centuries and have been transformed into a mix of luxury hotels and budget guesthouses .

I purposely tried to find havelis while we were travelling in Rajasthan, because it’s such a unique form of accommodation and you can feel the history from the minute you set foot through the door. While each haveli varies in terms of layout and design, you can generally expect dark wooden furniture, hand-painted scenes from Indian epics on the walls, a daybed with silk pillows, shared courtyards and rooftop terraces, and tiny doors that you’ll most likely have to duck your head under.

I stayed at the Jewel Palace Haveli , which had all of the above but catered to a more budget-friendly crowd. It was a property full of character, but my main complaint about this place is that the staff were quite young and easily distracted (we had to remind them multiple times that we needed things like towels, toilet paper and bed sheets); that being said, they are one of the top-rated havelis in the city. And that was it for Jodhpur! Our visit was short and sweet, but I’m glad we made time to stop here while we were traveling in Rajasthan . It was interesting coming here right after Jaisalmer, because even though both are fort cities, they each have their own distinct qualities. Jaisalmer was definitely the calmer of the two, but Jodhpur had its own gems hiding amidst the chaos.

I really love that shade of blue. I’m in the process of looking for a house to buy, and I think I will take some decorating inspiration from the colours of India after reading this!

I was in Jodhpur with my friends this January and it was undoubtedly the best trip of my entire lifetime. The grandeur, charm and colors of the city have made a permanent mark on my heart. Every aspect of this trip was as amazing as it could get. The lip smacking food, the bright clothes, shopping centers, Chokhi Dhani, camel rides, every single thing. One other unique experience was out bike ride around the blue city. We took a bike on rent in Jodhpur from this bike rental company called www[dot]wheelstreet[dot]com and roamed the city till night. This blog will make you want to pack your bags to Jodhpur, right away.

You reminded me of my Jodhpur trip. It was so much fun! I loved the sunset over the blue city, the Mehrangarh Fort and my lunch at Ajit Bhavan – a heritage property.

I had thought Chefchaouen in Morocco was the only blue city before reading this post, now I want to visit Jodhpur too! Thanks for the recommendation of staying in a haveli, I think that would be a great experience and it’s nice to know that there are some options out there for budget travelers too who want to stay in them too.

Jodhpur is an amazing place to roam around. This post just reminded me of that. Along with that it reminded me that the whole time I spent there, it felt like I was surrounded with the color blue. After reading this post I feel like going back there again. but last time when I went there I was facing some transportaion issues. It was a hassle. But recently my friends has been there and they have rented bikes to roam around from Wheelstreet bike rentals. So, I was thinking that how easy it would be now to roam around and enjoy that blue beauty. Will definitely go for another trip in Jodhpur.

The old city has a charm of its own with it’s magnificent architecture and old markets. I had a wonderful time with Bluecity Walks. A big plus- our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and helpful! Jodhpur is definitely an important tourist place but there are not many things to do and see like Jaipur and Udaipur. This is a reason travelers spent 2-4 days in these cities. You could be in one of the most luxurious properties in India and experience old-world Rajasthani hospitality. Or, you could stay in a guest house in one of the hap-hazardous lanes of the old town. Jodhpur sightseeing has enough to offer to both sets of travelers, the luxury-seeking-elites and the backpackers. It is amongst the 4 most-visited cities in Rajasthan besides Jaipur, Udaipur and Jaislamer.

Jodhpur, known as the Blue City of Rajasthan , offers visitors an enchanting array of places to explore. The bustling markets, ancient palaces, and majestic forts are just a few of the attractions that make Jodhpur a must-visit destination. One cannot miss the opportunity to catch a glimpse of the famous Jodhpur city view, where the blue houses that dot the landscape create a mesmerizing sight. The Blue City of Rajasthan

One of my favourite cities in Rajasthan, Jodhpur is a must-do on any itinerary to Rajasthan. You will be awed with the majestic Mehrangarh Fort, enjoy the spicy local food, and experience friendly vibes. Jodhpur tourist places would certainly make your trip enjoyable.

The city, especially the old town is bustling and colourful. If you walk around on Nai Sadak – eye-popping yellows and oranges and reds can be seen in shops and on people. But if you head to Mehrangarh Fort and look down at the blue houses of the old town, you realize that the city deserves its sobriquet of ‘The Blue City’.

Jodhpur, the Blue City of Rajasthan, is definitely worth visiting. With its captivating architecture, vibrant culture, and rich history, there are plenty of interesting places to explore. From the majestic Mehrangarh Fort that offers breathtaking views of the city, to the colorful and bustling markets of the old city, there is something for everyone.

Visitors can also experience the royal heritage of Jodhpur by visiting the Umaid Bhawan Palace, one of the largest private residences in the world. Additionally, the city’s vibrant streets, adorned with blue-painted houses, create a unique and picturesque backdrop for photographers and adventurers alike. Places to visit in Jodhpur

Here are some of my recommended places to visit in Jodhpur in 2 days –

Mehrangarh Fort and Museum

One of the top attractions in Jodhpur, Rajasthan is the majestic Mehrangarh Fort, which offers breathtaking views of the Jaipur to Jodhpur distance and the city’s captivating blue hues.

There is arguably no Fort as majestic as this one. This massive structure, standing at 410 feet looms large, can be seen from practically anywhere in the old city.

Mehrangarh Fort was built around 1460 by Rao Jodha, the founder of Jodhpur city. Still run by the Jodhpur royal family, it is packed with history and legend.

Do visit the well-stocked museum inside the Fort. Entry into the Fort is free, a ticket is needed only for the museum and is available at the main entrance itself. The museum has an extensive collection of royal palanquin collection. Another section displays textiles, paintings, and armoury. The museum also encompasses the Fort’s former palace – you can see the royal reception hall, the king’s bedchamber and the extensive zenana or women section.

Also worth exploring are the panoramic ramparts lined with artillery – the blue city spread below is a sight to behold from here. Just before the museum entrance is a restaurant, with decent food and drink options. Do wear sensible shoes while visiting the Fort – it is a steep walk from the main entrance to the interiors. Thrill seekers can also do zip-lining at Mehrangarh Fort, one of the fun adventure experiences in Rajasthan .

Jaswant Thada

Besides Mehrangarh Fort, there are other places to visit in Jodhpur. Other must-visit Jodhpur tourist places include the serene Jaswant Thada, the Umaid Bhawan Palace with its opulent interiors and lush gardens, and the tranquil Mandore Gardens, home to ancient temples and cenotaphs. 

An interesting place to see in Jodhpur is Jaswant Thada. This marble memorial to Maharaja Jaswant Singh II is located about a kilometer away from the Mehrangarh Fort. It is a peaceful spot, especially in the early mornings.

I have attended a fascinating music performance at this venue – the dawn concert by the Grammy-winning flautist Wouter Kellerman with Carnatic vocalist Mahesh Vinayakram.

Umaid Bhawan Palace Museum

Umaid Bhawan Palace Museum in Jodhpur is a grand palace turned into a museum. And it offers visitors a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle and royal grandeur. A part of the palace has been set up as a museum opened to the public.

Umaid Bhawan Palace Museum is within the palace complex. It displays the antiques belonging to the maharajas and the royal family. The palace has a beautiful, green garden, and it’s open to visitors. You can enjoy the greenery, and photograph the fountains.

Toorji ka Jhalra

Meandering along the narrow alleys of the old town, I stumbled upon a large, seemingly upside-down structure with steps all around it and a pond with deep blue water in the middle.

Sets of seven steps go down – one set to the right and one to the left, descending to the next platform, and the next set of stairs starts to go down on each side. What I had stumbled upon was Toor Ji ki Baoli , or what locals in Jodhpur refer to as Jhalra – my first sight of a significant ancient stepwell.

What stunning architecture was my first thought? No locks or gate or visitor fees for a monument like this was my second thought. I went closer and found several local boys jumping in the pond with a loud yell and glee on their faces. That must be cooling!

Clock Tower

Walking ahead from the step-well for about half a kilometer got me to the Clock Tower. This is an old city landmark surrounded by the vibrant sounds, sights, and smells of Sardar Market. Except for Sundays, the crowds can be quite chaotic, make sure you hold on to your kids in crowded spaces.

What to do in Jodhpur

Jodhpur is a treasure trove of fascinating places to visit and an abundance of things to do. Whether you are an adventurer seeking thrilling experiences or a history enthusiast looking to delve into the rich cultural heritage, Jodhpur has it all.

With its rich history, architectural wonders, and vibrant culture, Jodhpur truly offers an unforgettable experience for every traveler. So pack your bags and get ready to explore the myriad of things to do in Jodhpur.

Have a sundowner with a view of the majestic Mehrangarh Fort

There are several restaurants with claims to the best viewpoint of the Fort that defines this city. One of the best, in my opinion, is the rooftop at RAAS . Good cocktails, a wide variety of snacks to go with the drinks and a personal, close view of the Fort.

Another restaurant with a great view of the Fort is rooftop of Pal Bhavan . My husband and I went there for dinner. The breeze was quite chilly that evening, I was glad to be carrying a warm stole.

Try spicy local food

Stick to drinking bottled water to not fall sick, but live a little on the wild side and try local food in Jodhpur. I am from Rajasthan, and yet found some dishes fiery!

Ask any local and the one name that pops up for street food is Janta Sweet Home . I went there for a breakfast of pyaz kachori , jalebi and mirchi vada . My friend also tried the thick sweet lassi to wash it all down.

Another local restaurant that I found particularly good for local Rajasthani food is Jhankar Choti Haveli , near the Clock Tower. They served the best ker sangari I have eaten.

Shop for local stuff

Once you are done with Jodhpur sightseeing, you could shop for some local stuff. There is a row of shops on the main road near Ajit Bhawan that are worth looking at. Though some of the shops like Fab India, Anokhi and Amrapali have several stores across India, I found their collection at Jodhpur stores to be distinct with many local crafts on offer.

The shops inside Mehrangarh Fort have a large variety of non-precious jewelry, bags, stoles and shoes. It is nice to stroll through the Mehrangarh Museum Shop and see their quirky souvenirs.

You will find kitschy souvenirs and glass bangles all over the old town – around Clock Tower and in shops on Nai Sadak .

Where to stay in Jodhpur

The most luxurious stay in the city is undoubtedly Umaid Bhawan Palace . If you can afford the price tag, this is the place to stay in Jodhpur. Spread over 26 acres, this grand palace is one of the largest private residences in the world. 

Taj Hari Mahal is a good option for good hospitality, beautiful gardens, good food and the Taj hospitality. If you are looking for a luxury option in the old town, look no further than RAAS Jodhpur – a lovely boutique property built in red sandstone, overlooked by Mehrangarh.

How to get to Jodhpur

Jodhpur is well connected to Delhi, Mumbai and other cities in Rajasthan. You can take a flight from Delhi or Mumbai to reach Jodhpur. Or take a train. Delhi is located about 650 km from Jodhpur, and that distance can be covered via a long day road drive as well.

The distance from Jaipur to Jodhpur is about 330 km, that can be covered via a road trip or a train journey. Udaipur is only 250 km from Jodhpur and that is best covered via a road trip.

Within Jodhpur, you will find it easy to take a rickshaw. But they don’t generally use meters so try and negotiate the price beforehand. If you are a foreign tourist, be ready to pay a bit extra. Alternatively, you can hire a local cab to take you around in the city.

Umaid Bhawan Palace , Jodhpur

Umaid Bhavan Palace was built around 1943 and named after Maharaja Umaid Singh, grandfather of current Maharaja Gaj Singh. This Palace holds a prominent position among other places in Jodhpur. The Palace has 347 rooms and one part is managed by the Taj hotels and another part of Umaid Bhawan has been used as a museum for the public.

If you are a car enthusiast, then the exhibition of vintage cars is a beautiful thing to see. You will love the palace’s interior, which is a blend of eastern and western architectural styles, and where the traditional design meets the contemporary design.

I had never booked a room there but I heard that those who booked a room, got true royal treatment in the hotel.

Mehrangarh Fort , the most famous Places to visit in Jodhpur

One of the best places to visit in Jodhpur is the Mehrangarh fort. Around 1460 A.D., Rao Jodha, the Mandore Ruler built the Mehrangarh fort. This fort stands splendidly at 120 meters above the city. If you have watched the movie the Dark Knight Rises, then you will be happy to see that one of the movie scenes was shot in the Mehrangarh fort. Apart from this, many more Television ADs were also shot in the Mehrangarh fort. This vast fort, which is spread across 5 Kms in the heart of the Jodhpur City, is one of the largest forts in Rajasthan.

Originally a palace, and is now a museum, displaying weapons, paintings, and elaborate Rajasthani carvings. The families that lived inside the fort were believed to have their origins in the Sun God from Hindu mythology.

There are three palaces at Mehrangarh fort, these are

• Sheesh Mahal (the mirror hall),
• Moti Mahal (glass-painted windows of pearl colors), and
• Phool Mahal (the large hall of leisure activities of the Royal family)

Jaswant Thada

Jaswant Thada was built in the memory of Maharaja Jaswant Singh. You can couple your Mehrangarh trip with Jaswant Thanda as both are adjacent to each other. The stunning construction of marble is amazing and also known as the Taj Mahal of Marwar.

Mandore Gardens

It is one of the best-preserved sites that stand strong to tell the antiquity of an ancient era. Mandore served as the capital of many Jodhpur kings and even witnessed several invasions from various dynasties over the centuries. To protect Mandore further from invasions, the capital was shifted to the Mehrangarh Fort, as it offers better protection from enemies.

The Mandore Gardens has ancient temples and high-rock terraces that are quite amazing. You can spend the whole day seeing and clicking photos of the Gardens.

Osian Temple

Osian Temple as known as Khajuraho of Rajasthan located 65KM from Jodhpur City. The place is a combination of Jain and Hindu temples, surrounded by hamlets and dunes. The famous temple includes the Sachiya Mata temple, the Sun temple, and the main Jain Temple. The Jain temple was built in the dedication of Lord Mahavira. The Sachiya Mata temple is dedicated to the 9th incarnation Of Goddess Durga. The Sun temple is dedicated to the Sun God and also, houses the idols of Goddess Durga and Lord Ganesha. The Jain temple also symbolizes the stunning architectural design and is adorned with beautifully carved pillars.

Kailana Lake

Pratap Singh, in 1872, builds Kailana Lake. It is an artificial lake located in the west of Jodhpur city. The lake is a paradise for people who love to watch birds as it is a house for migratory birds. To capture the beautiful sunset view and some great pictures that you can flaunt, take a boat ride. Kailana Lake is one of the most visited lakes in Rajasthan.

Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park

In 2006, Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park was created to restore the rocky area near the fort. The park is spread across 200 acres of land and has a lush green view because of some hard-working and passionate ecologists. After meeting all the prerequisites for land restoration, the ecologist grew around 80 different species of famous plants that are found in the Thar Desert.

Jodhpur Clock Tower

Clock Tower was built between 1880 and 1911, is one of the famous relics in the Old Jodhpur city. Located next to Sardar Market, Clock Tower offers a great view of Mehrangarh Fort. Balsamand Lake

In 1159, Balak Rao Parihar constructed Balsamand lake, an artificial lake as a summer resort for the royal family of Jodhpur. The lush green gardens is another paradise in Jodhpur Rajasthan for birdwatchers. My Little Guide to Jodhpur, India’s Blue City: The Best Places for Photography and the Perfect Haveli in the Old City

Did you know India has its very own “Blue City”? It does! Jodhpur, in Rajasthan. I’ve been here years ago as a backpacker and wrote some tips in this article  but I recently revisited less on a backpackers budget and more on a mid-range budget. I came for fun but also to do research and see what has changed in Jodhpur since I last visited. I wanted to find the best restaurants, a hotel you guys can afford that is also cute with views, and a few new places to shop. I found all that and more!

Guide to Jodhpur, India’s Blue City

This isn’t the only blue city I’ve visited; I’ve also visited Chefchaouen in Morocco which is totally different. While in Morocco it’s clearly all painted and every single inch is blue and “new” looking – in India, it’s very faded different shades of blue and the blue parts are only in one small part of Jodhpur, not the whole city (which is the second biggest city in Rajasthan).

Why is it blue?  Like Morocco, the reasons vary but a lot of people will say that it keeps the temperature down and keeps mosquitos away. There is an incredible fort and palace here but the thing about Jodhpur that makes it SO worth visiting is the REALNESS of it in comparison to the rest of Rajasthan.

I know that sounds crazy but let me try to explain: In Jaipur, it’s a huge city that is very modern, quite clean, and has great infrastructure. Everyone you meet there will speak English with you and you can pop into a huge variety of restaurants for food from all over the world. On the other hand, Udaipur is a tiny little town with a lake in the middle, easy to walk around, and very touristy. Jodhpur is neither of these. Jodhpur is a HUGE city but in a very small space, not with nice infrastructure like Jaipur, the capital.

Jodhpur is like stepping back in time, it’s modern and you’ll have a hard time finding decent Western food here – which is usually an indicator of how touristy a place is. The Old City is jammed with people, cars can’t go in, and the bustling clock tower is so busy that even my friend Tia who grew up in South India and went to school here said she’d never been in a real Indian city like this before. It’s somewhere that will give you a sense of that Indian culture shock that we all get a kick out of but at the same time it’s small enough that if you walk around and get lost you can hop in a rickshaw and they’ll likely know your hotel or at least the area the hotel is in and help you find your way home for just a couple bucks.

While in Jodhpur, you don’t need to think luxury – instead think eating Indian food with your hands, getting lost in the maze of blue buildings, photographing the amazing sights and people, seeing animals in the streets, and staying in a haveli from the 15th and 16th century.

Getting To & From Jodhpur + Getting Around Jodhpur

Train/bus to jodhpur.

The option most travelers take who are going to see multiple places in the Indian state of Rajasthan is to travel by either train or bus. As a backpacker, I preferred bus (cheaper and more direct to the bus station usually right inside town). These days, I prefer A/C train journeys so I can watch a movie or something although the train stations are sometimes outside the city and then you need a taxi to your hotel. Here are tips on trains and buses in India . Either option is great for Jodhpur, but I took a taxi from Udaipur to save time.

Flights to Jodhpur

You can check  Kiwi.com  for flight options – I always use them for the best rates. You won’t want to fly in and out of Jodhpur from within Rajasthan though as it’s usually not direct and you have to go to Delhi between and it costs a load of money, where you could just drive for 5,000 rupees and get pretty much anywhere out of the tourist sites in 6-7 hours.

Taxis in and out of Jodhpur

I chose taxi from Udaipur to Jodhpur and Jodhpur onward to Jaipur because it just made sense money-wise and timewise. Basically, it was 3,500 to drive from Udaipur to Jodhpur with an agency I found on the street (read prices and booking information in my article about Udaipur ). Leaving from Jodhpur to Jaipur is about an hour longer and our hotel offered us a rate of 5,000 so we took that. A train would have been about 1,700 Rs for each of us (3,400 Rs) and taken much much longer. While there is a lot to see between Udaipur and Jodhpur to stay awake for, we left for the highway journey to Jaipur at 6 AM and slept through most of it.

Getting around: Uber & rickshaws

You can use Uber anytime you go outside the city which we did for a visit to the Taj for pool time and to Gypsy restaurant. It’s so easy and you will likely meet your driver near the Clock Tower as they cannot drive into the Old City. Although Uber is here and easy, in the Old City you need to use rickshaws as the lanes are narrow and the cars can’t go in plus there is a complicated one-way system until 9 PM.

*TIP* as always negotiate with the rickshaw driver who will likely quote double the cost. They will know “chowks” (the main square “market” or area of each zone) but they won’t know all restaurants and hotels even places that are so popular like RAAS, so it’s best to know what “chowk” you are going to and what chowk your hotel is in. That, they will understand! From there, they can ask a local to that area where the place is you are trying to find. I always have my google maps anyway and just tell the driver where to turn if I am feeling on top of things.

Best Hotels in Jodhpur

I did so much research about the hotel I wanted in Jodhpur and found the key in booking – get an average priced place but splurge for the suite! It’s the same thing we did in Udaipur. The buildings (havelis) in Rajasthan are so stunning and many were palaces so the rooms will be very different and if the place isn’t that popular they can’t put rates too high, so the suite will be the most expensive room in a not so expensive place.

Blue House Guesthouse – $53 USD for the 100 sq. foot suite!

A member of my India Travel Tips group actually told me about this (thanks!) and after checking it out, I was hooked on one specific room: the Jhankar Temple Suite. It was SO cute in photos and looked exactly the same when I arrived. This place is great for ALL budgets. A basic room here is just 1,750 Rs and the suite I got was 3,500 Rs per night. When you book make sure you clarify which room you want as technically all are called suites although on booking sites it will be tiered booking options “standard, deluxe, executive, and suite”. I emailed and called to verify I was getting the room I wanted. The Royal King Suite is also 3,500 which is cute too but I thought the Jhankar was the best. There are other rooms that are 2,400 and 2,900.

The guesthouse when you walk in is not that impressive to be honest because it’s dark and cramped (not an area you’d want to hang out and have a coffee) but that feeling goes away as soon as you start chatting with the Jain family who own it. They were all so friendly and helpful during my whole stay.

As we winding way way way up the stairs in the guesthouse we finally reached out suite and WOW it is imressive. The fact it’s just $53/night is a real steal. The room is ancient and you can just wonder what all has happened there in the 500 years it’s been there – even some movies have used this room for filming. There is an AMAZING view of the fort as well.

We didn’t love the food and chose to eat out after trying the meals – not an issue though as you’ll be out exploring anyway. Plus, in general, we disliked almost all the food we tried in Jodhpur. More about that later. First, check out this cute room!

The only downsides of the room were the A/C did not get very cold and would click on and off making it hard to sleep as we’d get really hot then cold then hot, you get the picture! The other thing is the bathroom had a hole in it for drainage on the floor near the sink which doesn’t look great – but I think was their only way to get the plumbing sorted. It’s a small bathroom but the room itself is huge. There is a TV although I didn’t try it. WiFi doesn’t reach all the way up to the room (same in almost all havelis in Jodhpur).

This is the most popular boutique hotel in Jodhpur and it’s often fully booked, as it was when I was there. Basic rooms start at $323 per night – and in Jodhpur because it’s a dusty chaotic city, I really wanted to stay in a room that was a nice escape and had a lot of character but I wasn’t ready to spend this much in Jodhpur for three nights (that is like a grand)… But, if you have the budget for the RAAS, there is nowhere else you should stay. I went there to check it out and it’s beyond beautiful and is in the perfect location by the stepwell. Read reviews and check availability here .

Umaid Bhawan Palace (the Taj)

The ultimate in luxury in Jodhpur, the Umaid Bhawan Palace is actually a palace and the hotel is one part of it, owned by the Taj Hotel Group. It’s around $700 per night and higher in the peak season (Dec/Jan). Check availability here .

Vivanta by Taj

There are Taj’s everywhere in India and I went to this one to use the pool for the day and the spa. They are the only place I could find that allow outside guests to use the pool for two hours for around 1,000 Rs. I also got a massage and it was something like 3,500 Rs – it was good. The hotel itself seemed a little bland, was really far outside of town and I’m pretty glad I didn’t stay there. While I usually love Taj hotels, this one wasn’t my favorite I’ve visited. It was good for coming to use the pool though! It was basically $65 for the day to use the pool and have an hour massage. Check rates and availability here .

For another budget option, I also stayed at a haveli years back which is still there called Gouri Heritage Haveli which you can book here.  Back then it was 500 Rs but now it’s 2,000 for the cheapest room. You can compare their basic room with the basic rooms are Blue House and see which you prefer.

Restaurants in Jodhpur

Well, this is going to be a small section because we ate out 7 meals during our time in Jodhpur and only one was memorable. There were two others that were okay, but others that were “top ranked” online fell flat. Definitely don’t bother trying the western food here.

Gypsy Dining Hall  – This place is AMAZING. This is outside of town and you’ll need to take an Uber but it’s so 1000% worth it. The thali is just amazing. Make sure you to upstairs where they serve the thali, not the downstairs restauarant. Every single bit of this meal was delicious. I think it was around 200 Rs and it was all you can eat – they just come around and fill it back up. This is the best place to go to try Dal Batti and get a sense of the local food.

The Curry’s – Near RAAS, Stepwell, and all that popular stuff is a hostel called the Blue Turban and the reviews for this rooftop hostel restaurant were great so we popped in. It was decilious and was a great view of the fort at night, which was straight ahead.

Stepwell – One of the most popular restaurants in Jodhpur. They have a very limited menu of basically an omelette, a pizza, and a cheese or chicken and cheese grilled sandwich, all of which are “okay” but good compared to Indian restaurants nearby trying to make the same things… They had very good coffee, cute ambiance, great A/C on a hot day, WiFi, and views of the stepwell outside. These are the same people who own RAAS.

RAAS – we took a look at the menu at RAAS and after seeing my normally priced 100 Rs Goan fish curry rice at 900 Rs plus 28% taxes, we bounced. It was so overpriced (although luxury which I get) but we felt we could get good food elsewhere and since they also owned the Stepwell Cafe where we didn’t like the food, we figured we’d also be disappointed here but having spent more money. Had they allowed outside guests to use the pool, we would have done lunch here and tried it. At dinner when we came around 9 PM the restaurant was empty.

There are others we tried and didn’t like so I won’t go into detail, except one: Indique , it’s rated VERY well, it’s very expensive, and it was maybe our worst meal, unfortunately. The staff here were so so nice but it wasn’t worth 600 Rs oily biryani.

Soon, Good Earth will be opening a cafe and I have high hopes for that! I saw it and it’s SO adorable plus they are a great brand so I think it’ll be good food. It’s meant to open this season.

Jodhpur Shopping

Overall, Jodhpur is not known for its shopping. Basically, once you’ve seen the Fort and Palace and scheduled a tour to the Bishnoi tribal areas, then you can see where you have an afternoon to shop.

You won’t find as much of those tourist shops with ali baba pants and elephant print stuff, instead it’s boutiques all in one area, most of which are overpriced. While you will see some tourist shops with that type of clothing, this isn’t the best place for having many options so you might want to wait.

You can go to the market by the Clock Tower to look for cheaper stuff, but I don’t think you’ll find a lot here in terms of clothes or jewelry. You might find some fabric or knick knacks as well as scarves both silk and pashmina (but probably all fake).

For the boutiques I mentioned, definitely check them out as mixed into the expensive stuff are some affordable things. Basically, put “Stepwell Cafe” into your GPS or tell your driver “Sharif Chowk” or “Amar Chowk”; it’s kind of between the two on the map.

Once you reach Stepwell, you’ll see the famous steps down to the well and nearby is RAAS hotel, Blue Turban hostel, and popular Namaste Cafe. This area has many boutiques you can pop in like Good Earth, Haveli Crafts, Via Jodhpur, and more. This is also near the Clock Tower so you can go there too, and to the main Sadar market and even the famous omelette shop in the market (which happens to be near Indique restaurant).

One of the main things to buy in Jodhpur is the traditional wooden furniture which is ancient and collector’s items. It’s quite expensive but a million times cheaper here than some luxury furniture shop in NYC selling the same thing that they send buyers to Jodhpur to purchase and export. There are export stores/warehouses in the city. Just ask your hotel to please give you a few to go to and you can compare prices and buy items to ship home. They ship internationally all the time and it’s not a big deal so don’t let it stress you. Keep in mind a LOT of what you see in shops, even export ones, are “replicas” of antiques.

Things to do in Jodhpur as a Tourist & Places to Visit in Jodhpur

Jodhpur isn’t as chilled as Udaipur is. In Udaipur, I wrote about how you can walk around and see signs for pop-in art classes, yoga class, ayurvedic massage, and cooking classes. Jodhpur is more like a real city not set up for tourists, so you aren’t going to see all these “things to do in Jodhpur” like you do in other Indian cities. The best thing to do is to plan out when you want to see the attractions (which I’ll mention below) then spend the rest of your time wandering around.

How long should you stay in Jodhpur? The first time I went there, I stayed 3 nights (5 years ago) and wrote in my journal it was too long and two would have sufficed. This time, I stayed 3 nights again as I was traveling with a friend instead of alone and thought we could spend one day having a pool/spa day. Even with one pool/spa day, 3 nights/days was again, too much. I recommend staying just two nights!

Mehrangarh Fort

The fort is the #1 things to do in Jodhpur and you couldn’t miss this if you tried. It is ENORMOUS and overlooks the entire city from way up high. Almost every restaurant is a rooftop one so you can look at the fort while you eat. It’s amazing. When you tour, it’ll be 600 Rs. for a ticket and more if you take in a camera (yeah, it’s like this all over India). I didn’t bother with the headset (free) because I listened the first time I went and wrote in that blog post that it was SO boring and reading the signs was more efficient since they said the same thing. You can see the whole city from up at the fort.

There are families that sit at the fort and play flutes and sing and it’s so amazing; it definitely brought on some happy tears!

Jaswant Thada

Aka the “white palace”. I went to this one years back, but did not visit again this year. It’s made of marble and is impressive. If you stay in Jodhpur two days, you’ll have enough time to see this as well as all the other attractions.

Umaid Bhawan Palace

This is where the ex-royal family live (aka the maharaja who lost power once India became a democracy). Fun fact: this palace was built during a famine and was done solely to give the local people some work so they could make money. Like mentioned above, part of this is a hotel and you cannot enter that side you can only go to the museum side.

You MUST do a tour! I didn’t do this my first time into Jodhpur, but our hotel Blue House Guesthouse offered such a good rate of 600 Rs. per person that we thought what the heck, might as well check it out. I’m glad we did. While much of it is just taking you from place to place hoping that you buy stuff (and I’m sure the tour arranger would take a commission) or tip the people you meet – don’t worry, your tour guide will remind you a few times to do this ;) … it’s still worth doing. In India, you’re always dealing with middlemen and people making commissions on things, but it doesn’t make what they are selling bad.

The Bishnoi village or tribe is really unique and on a few hours long tour you can go from house to house to see how they cook, their unique huts, how the make their rugs, and even try some opium with them. During it all, you’ll be driving in nature areas so will see animals. I’ve written a whole article about the experience that you can read here:

If you want a tour you can book ahead, this all day tour in Jodhpur (all hotspots) and the Bishnoi with hotel pick up and drop off is available on Viator and you can  book for $44 . It’s the best deal I’ve found. If you want to add in a camel safari, you can look at this one and  book for $60 . If you’re in a rush and just want to visit the Bishnoi, this 5-hour Bishnoi tour with pick up and drop off from your hotel is a good option;  book here for $85 .

Explore the Blue City!

So, the whole city of Jodhpur is not blue, it’s actually the very oldest bit up near the Fort that you’ll find the blue area. While much of the city is dirty and crowded, once you reach this area, it’s a breath of fresh air. It’s so empty and you can wander and take pictures to your heart’s desire. We saw so many tourists near the crowded Clock Tower, but when we came here to the blue part, there was no one.

The truth is, it’s a MASSIVE city and this blue part isn’t that easy to stumble across if you don’t know where you are going. Ask your hotel specifically where the old city “blue city” is on the map and show that to a rickshaw driver. There is a “chowk” name for this area. It was like Noi chowk? Everyone was pronouncing it differently so I think it’s like Navi chowk but in India some say “Nawi” chowk since they change W and V here a lot.

You could technically MISS THIS if you didn’t look for the blue area. Don’t make that mistake!

Check out the Stepwell

Maybe you’ve seen photos like this before of the huge stairwells in Jaipur, where the ladies do laundry then lay the colorful clothing out on the steps to dry? Here it’s much smaller and there are local kids jumping in for the tourists to video it (aka me, lol). It’s really a beautiful spot and for Instagram, was great for me to get some images.

See a traditional show

You can check Jodhpur’s official tourism page for tips on what shows you could see. I recommend seeing traditional dance. Many restaurants that overlook the fort (which is basically all rooftop restaurants) will have people pop in to do a show, and they are doing it for tips only so if you enjoy it, you can give them money after. There is a festival called RIFF on the tourism page that I just barely missed (darn!) and it’s meant to be amazing.

You can also check out the Mandore Gardens which are beauitful and have temples, ruins, and monuments scattered throughout. The Ghanta Ghar (Clock Tower) is an attraction of its own as well. You can also check out nearby lakes Balsamand and Kaylana, both are man-made. For temples, the most famous is the Kunj Bihari temple followed by the Achar Nath Temple. I didn’t make time for either on this trip.

Thx for all the info. We are Indians settled in USA and going to Jodhpur & Jaislemer in Feb 2018. We are wonderfing if we need Taxi for the whole day or not. We want to see the highlights of Jodhpur. Whats the best way to do so? Take an escorted tour from 9-5 pm or take taxi and guide or get uber? 2nd day we are going to Sufi festival at the Mehrangarh fort . Will Uber take us back & forth. Ubers available with ease? Then we travel to Jaislemer from JOdhpur and want to get Jaislemer tour that day. Next day we stay at Dessert camp. We want to go to nice, luxury camp, any suggestions? Thx again

Uber is in Jodhpur but not sure about Jaisalmer. Cheaper to just get Uber’s when you need them rather than all day taxi – plus you don’t really need escorted tour in these places. most forts and such come with free audio guides. Ubers are available easily in Jodhpur but you have to walk out to the main bazaar to meet them as they cannot go on the tiny alley road – only rickshaws can, and even they can’t go down some of them! plus, it’s a complicated one-way system so even after 9 pm when cars can go down into town, they won’t because it’s a mess.

As a retired photojournalist, I am interested in candid people plctures. In general how do they react to having their photo made? I don’t want to offend anyone but the best pictures are the ones as they go about their business. What has been your experience?

BTW I’m about 3 parts 60’s hippie and am still figuring out the other parts.

I always ask before I take a photo as some people here do not like it. Indians are curious about foreigners and often want to snap selfies with us as well, but I only allow that if they ask – so I kind of just do the same for them. But, if you have a big serious camera and take candids of people I doubt anyone will mind and if they do you can delete it. But, mostly they love having their photos taken here!

People are friendly and always welcoming you with open hands and hearts. You might feel like home away from home because of the hospitality you’ll get here.

Great post, just wanted to add, there is a PLETHORA of amazing dining options and jodhpur is KNOWN for shopping certain items. I hope next time if you get a chance to visit you can grab some local items such as bandej or gottapatti. Btw Jodhpur is the #1 tourist city, the reason you find it “old” and not like Jaipur is because that is their USP – it’s a heritage city.

Hope you go again and can find a local to show you around some more! I think this city will surprise you :)

Jodhpur - The Blue City

Founded in the year 1459, the royal city of Jodhpur is one the gems of Rajasthan tourism . Jodhpur is not only the second-largest city in the state but also one of the popular tourist destinations in Rajasthan. Nicknamed ‘ Sun City’ Jodhpur has still have been able to preserve the opulent heritage and culture in the form of magnificent and larger-than-life forts and palaces. Tourism in Jodhpur is all about its diverse historical destinations and colorful culture.

Jodhpur: The Blue City

While the city’s distinctive blue appearance adds to the aura of Jodhpur, the majestic forts and palaces are what mesmerize tourists due to their sheer grandeur and magnificence.

Overlooking the city from its vantage, the impregnable Mehrangarh Fort is the major tourist attraction in Jodhpur due to its colossal size and location.

The residential museum at the fort is a treasure trove of rich Rajputana history. The red sandstone Khejarla Fort is another architectural marvel and one the finest example of Rajput architecture.

Straight out of fantasy novel, Umaid Bhawan Palace is a gorgeous palace and one the largest private homes in the world.

A seamless blend of Indo-Saracenic and Classical Revival architectural styles, the portion of the palace serves as a luxury hotel maintained by the Taj Group.

Some other famous palaces in Jodhpur are Moti Mahal , Phool Mahal , and Sheesh Mahal. Samand Lake Palace is a beautiful hunting resort beside the lake for the royal family and houses collection of African game trophies.

Other lakes in Jodhpur include Kailana Lake, Ranisar and Padmasar Lakes and Balsamand Lake.

Chamunda Mataji temple is a revered shrine dedicated to Goddess Chamunda and it is believed to be the Ishta Devi of the Maharajas of Jodhpur and the royal family.

Standing erect on 82 pillars, Mahamandir Temple is another intricately-carved shrine that depicts all Yogic poses.

Things to do in Jodhpur

There are many places of interest in Jodhpur for tourists. However, some activities deserve special mention due to their exclusivity. The flying fox is an adventure activity that offers the opportunity to catch an aerial view of the Mehrangarh Fort .

One of the highly recommended activities in Jodhpur is the Bishnoi Village Safari tour. The Bishnoi community is known to be a worshipper of nature and offers a glimpse into their tribal lifestyle and traditions.

It is a place caught in a time warp where life still goes on the way it did in the days of the past. Last, but not the least, the trip to Rajasthan is incomplete camel safari through the desert sand dunes, past ancient Havelis, temples, and even historic landmarks.

Best Time to visit Jodhpur

Winter months i.e October to March are the best time to enjoy sightseeing and activities like desert safari and festivals.  Desert Kite festival  also held in January. Summers are hot with scorching heat. Monsoons are too humid for enjoy outdoor activities.

Weather in Jodhpur

Jodhpur has enjoyable weather in winter season with temperature ranges from 10°C to 24°C. Monsoons are humid and get rainfall from low to medium. Summers are too hot and scorching heat makes you uncomfortable with temperature ranges from 36°C to 44°C.
