Bruce and I had a fabulous time…our guide, Ari, was so knowledgeable and personable. He made the experience so educational and inspiring. This was our first trip to Israel and we so respect and admire Israel. Learning about my Jewish heritage has given me a new way to look at this land that is truly a Jewish homeland. I will never forget the information and emotion that I have gained from this trip. It was truly a trip of a lifetime for both of us – thanks for your help. – Marcia C. Just wanted to drop you a note to let you know how fantastic our trip was. Everything was planned so well and we felt we got the most out of our Jewish Heritage tour. The guides were wonderful and all details were handled in a first class manner. Thank you for making our trip so meaningful full of inspiration and emotion. Also, the weather could not have been better! – Bonnie R. For our family, the trip was really extraordinary. I knew my husband would love the history. I knew I’d love the culture and adventure. I was confident my kids would have fun. I did not anticipate how absolutely transformative it was for my 18 and 20 year olds. We take great vacations but towards the end of this one, they both, independently, told me this trip changed their lives. It was the right thing at the right time in the right way. We will all be back. – Julie R.

The best solo travel holidays.

With more of us than ever travelling alone, here are some of the best singles holidays for any travel style

Cathy Winston

BY Cathy Winston

articlemain

Travelling solo has never been more popular. Google searches for “solo travel” and “travel alone” were the highest ever at the start of this year, while one in nine people took a solo holiday in the previous year, according to ABTA’s Holiday Habits report 2017.

And with another survey by solo travel website 101 Singles Holidays finding that the numbers booking solo trips rose 14% last year, the trend shows no sign of stopping. That goes double if you’re a women, with female solo travellers taking 63% of solo trips last year, according to research .

It’s not just gap year students skewing the results either: the average age of all single holidaymakers was 57. You needn’t even be single, growing numbers are leaving partners behind to fulfil their own travel dreams.

Best of all, tour operators and travel companies are responding to the growing demand with more trips aimed at solo travellers, and helping those travelling alone to avoid single supplements. India, Italy and Sri Lanka were the three fastest growing destinations for solo travellers, with Greece and Spain joining Italy as the most popular overall.

So wherever you’d like to go, whether it’s your first solo trip or your fiftieth, and whatever style of holiday suits you, there’s a perfect solo break out there. We’ve picked out some of the options and the best companies to try.

Singles-only trips

If you’re wary of being the odd one out, guarantee plenty of other company from other solo travellers with a singles-only holiday. Specialists Friendship Travel , Solos Holidays and Travel One all offer trips exclusively for singles so you’re also certain to have your own room.

Many have a house party feel to them – a host makes sure no-one gets left out, and can help organise excursions and days out, but there’s no regimented timetable. But you can also book anything from a UK walking holiday to a skiing break to island hopping in the Mediterranean or long-haul destinations such as Cuba.

There are even golfing holidays and dinner-dance breaks if you’re looking for an escape with other people who share your interest.

jewish singles travel groups

Escorted tours

Perfect if you’d rather travel as part of a group, they’re also ideal if you’re heading off the beaten track.

With so much choice, it’s worth doing some research to find the perfect fit. Some offer singles-only itineraries such as Solo Travellers , others have no supplement if you’re happy to share a room (and if they can’t find another solo traveller of the same sex, you don’t have to pay the supplement either) while some cater to specific age ranges. If you’re a single parent travelling with kids, there are family-friendly itineraries too.

Explore and On The Go Tours  have a wide range of small group tours, many with no compulsory single supplement – ranging from the chance to discover the Highlights of Portugal to two weeks exploring Thailand and its Temples & Tribes .

Cox & Kings has dedicated solo traveller tours as well, popular with over-50s, including long-haul destinations such as India , Costa Rica and South Africa , while Saga Holidays singles-only tours are exclusively for the over 50s , with short-haul and long-haul options.

Or look for specialist companies, such as InsideAsia Tours , American Sky and Australian Sky .

jewish singles travel groups

There’s a good reason cruises are often so popular with solo travellers – not only an easy way to see the world, the friendly atmosphere makes it simple to strike up conversation, plus there are port tours to join if you don’t want to explore solo.

Despite this, cruise lines haven’t always catered well for single cruisers, until recently. Norwegian Cruise Lines  was one of the first to create proper studio staterooms designed for single passengers, avoiding high supplements, as well as a social lounge exclusively for those travelling solo. There’s also flexible dining on board.

If you prefer the more formal approach, Fred Olsen has the traditional group tables in the main restaurant and can pair single travellers together, or provide dinner hosts and companions for on-shore excursions.

As well as activities to help single cruisers meet up, they also have single cabins, no supplement on selected sailings and reduced supplements if you’d like your own twin cabin. Sites such as Iglu.com have regular early booking deals and last-minute discounts for solo cruisers, including both cruise lines.

There’s more than ocean cruising too – getting to know people is easy on smaller ships, from all-inclusive luxury barge holidays in Europe with European Waterways , whose special offers include no single supplement, or single cabins on St Hilda Sea Adventures cruises around Scotland’s western Isles.

jewish singles travel groups

Beach holiday

Sometimes all you want from a holiday is the chance to lie on a sunlounger and relax – and there’s no reason single travellers should pay over the odds to do so.

Mercury Holidays has hotels with no single supplement worldwide whether you’re looking for a Mediterranean escape, the chance to sunbathe by the Indian Ocean or winter sun deals.

Bigger resorts can be a great option too, with plenty of facilities for those travelling alone.

Breathless Punta Cana Resort & Spa in the Dominican Republic has a virtual guest chatroom, for example, so you can get to know people before you check in as well as finding company once you arrive – there are also communal tables in some of the 11 restaurants and low single supplements.

The BodyHoliday  in St Lucia has a string of single rooms, and its all-inclusive stays don’t just cover food and drink; you’ll get activities, watersports and even spa treatments included. There’s a special September Solos month focused around single guests, with extra deals too.

Fancy some me time on a white sand beach with its own house reef? The Maldives aren’t just for honeymooners. At four-star  Bandos Island Resort , there’s no single supplement at selected times if you book with Barefoot Traveller .

jewish singles travel groups

Themed holidays

A singles holiday based around a particular activity or hobby is another great option – a shared interest ensures everyone has something in common and it’s a perfect ice-breaker if you’re new to solo travel.

If it’s art, music and culture that you love, there are themed tours galore from several specialist companies. The Cultural Travel Company has low single supplements for many trips, while Martin Randall Travel has new solo-only tours for 2018.

Travel with an expert guide on a holiday from the award-winning Peter Sommer Travels , focused on the archaeology and history of the Mediterranean, including gulet cruises around Croatia, Greece and Italy.

Kirker Holidays also has no single supplements on some trips; its focus is on classical music, including their own music festivals, as well as art.

Or write your own novel, on a creative writing break in Greece with Skyros , along with creative and personal development courses in Spain at Cortijo Romero .

If you prefer a more active escape, Inghams has summer lakes and mountains holidays, trekking and walking through some of Europe’s loveliest scenery – and no single supplement. Ramblers Walking Holidays has no supplement on an increasing number of its walking holidays too, including short breaks in the UK.

There are also yoga holidays for singles as well as spa and detox breaks among other healthy holiday ideas for solo travellers.

The Masa Experience

jewish singles travel groups

The Ultimate Guide to Jewish Travel

jewish singles travel groups

In a world where every corner holds a story, there’s a unique allure to journeys that connect us with our heritage and identity. Jewish travel isn’t just about visiting new places; it’s about walking the paths of ancestors, immersing oneself in rich traditions, and experiencing the vibrant tapestry of global Jewish life. It’s an invitation to explore not just the world, but also oneself. If you’ve ever felt the pull of ancient histories and modern cultures intertwining, then embarking on a journey with Masa Israel Journey might just be the life-changing adventure you’ve been seeking.

Understanding the Essence of Jewish Travel

Imagine standing at the Western Wall in Jerusalem, feeling the weight of millennia of history pressing gently against your palms. Or perhaps wandering through the narrow, cobbled streets of Prague’s Jewish Quarter, where every building whispers tales of resilience and tradition. Jewish travel is a profound exploration of identity, a pilgrimage that intertwines personal growth with cultural discovery.

In recent years, heritage tourism has surged in popularity as more people seek meaningful experiences that transcend typical sightseeing. For Jewish travelers, this means reconnecting with roots, understanding the diaspora’s impact, and forging bonds with communities worldwide. It’s about more than just seeing; it’s about feeling, learning, and growing.

Top Jewish Travel Destinations Worldwide

While the world is dotted with places significant to Jewish history, few destinations resonate as deeply as Israel. As the heart of Jewish travel, Israel offers an unparalleled blend of ancient history and modern vibrancy. Walk through Jerusalem, where sacred sites like the Western Wall and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre stand as testaments to enduring faiths. In Tel Aviv, experience a city pulsing with energy, from its sun-soaked beaches to its dynamic arts scene. Haifa, perched on the slopes of Mount Carmel, invites you to explore its harmonious blend of cultures and breathtaking Bahá’í Gardens.

But Jewish travel isn’t confined to Israel alone. Europe holds a mirror to centuries of Jewish life. In Poland, cities like Kraków and Warsaw bear solemn witness to the tragedies of the past while celebrating the revival of Jewish culture. The haunting silence of Auschwitz-Birkenau serves as a powerful reminder of history’s darkest chapters, urging us never to forget. Spain beckons with the rich legacy of Sephardic Jews, where cities like Toledo and Córdoba reveal stories of a once-flourishing community. Meanwhile, Prague’s Jewish Quarter offers a journey through time, with synagogues and cemeteries that have stood for centuries.

jewish travel

Venturing further afield, the global tapestry of Jewish communities unfolds in unexpected places. Discover the ancient traditions of the Beta Israel community in Ethiopia, or explore the synagogues of Cochin and Mumbai in India, where Jewish life has woven itself into the local fabric. South America, too, holds vibrant Jewish communities, particularly in Argentina and Brazil, contributing to the diverse cultural landscapes of these nations.

Why Israel Stands Out for Jewish Travelers

There’s an undeniable magic in Israel that captivates every traveler, but for those on a Jewish travel journey, the connection runs even deeper. This is a land where history and spirituality are palpable, where every stone has a story, and every vista evokes a sense of belonging.

The historical significance of Israel is unparalleled. Walk the shores of the Sea of Galilee, where ancient footsteps once tread, or ascend to Masada, the mountaintop fortress symbolizing heroism and perseverance. The archaeological wonders scattered throughout the country, like the ruins of Caesarea and the mystical alleys of Safed, offer tangible links to the past.

Culturally, Israel is a melting pot. Its modern cities buzz with innovation, art, and a culinary scene that’s as diverse as its population. Savor the flavors of the Middle East with dishes like falafel, hummus, and shakshuka, best enjoyed in bustling markets like Mahane Yehuda in Jerusalem or Carmel Market in Tel Aviv. The country’s festivals and events, from the joyous celebrations of Purim to the reflective observances of Yom Kippur, provide immersive experiences that enrich any Jewish travel itinerary.

Spiritually, Israel offers a profound sense of connection. Whether you’re participating in prayers at the Western Wall, exploring ancient synagogues, or engaging in study sessions, the opportunities for personal and religious growth are boundless.

The Masa Experience: More Than Just Travel

What sets Masa apart is its holistic approach to Jewish travel. It’s not just about where you go, but who you become along the way.

Employers recognize the initiative and adaptability demonstrated by those who have lived and worked abroad, giving you a competitive edge in your career.

Planning Your Jewish Travel with Masa

Embarking on a journey with Masa is straightforward, with support provided every step of the way.

Start by exploring the various programs on the Masa Israel Journey website. Each program details its focus, duration, and eligibility requirements, helping you find the perfect fit for your goals.

The application process involves completing an online form, submitting necessary documents, and participating in an interview to discuss your aspirations. Masa is committed to making Jewish travel accessible, offering significant grants and scholarships based on factors like age, program duration, and country of origin. Information on financial aid is available during the application process.

Preparing for your journey includes practical steps like obtaining the appropriate visa, packing essentials, and familiarizing yourself with Israeli customs and etiquette. Masa provides comprehensive resources and support to ensure you’re ready for this exciting adventure.

Health and safety are paramount. With on-ground support staff, established emergency protocols, and included health insurance in most programs, you can embark on your journey with peace of mind.

Insider Tips for an Unforgettable Jewish Travel Experience

To truly make the most of your Jewish travel with Masa, immerse yourself fully in the local culture. Learning a few Hebrew phrases can enrich your interactions and show respect for the local community. Don’t hesitate to say “Shalom” (hello) or “Toda” (thank you) as you navigate your daily life.

Participate in local events and festivals. Celebrating holidays like Purim, with its colorful parades and costumes, or attending the Jerusalem Film Festival, offers unique insights into Israeli society and traditions. These experiences not only enhance your understanding but also create unforgettable memories.

Culinary exploration is a must. Israel’s food scene is a delightful fusion of flavors. Visit local markets to taste fresh produce, artisanal cheeses, and traditional pastries like rugelach. Indulge in street food staples, and don’t miss out on a wine tour in regions like the Galilee, where vineyards produce some of the country’s finest wines.

Travel responsibly by practicing sustainable tourism. Be mindful of environmental impacts by recycling, conserving water, and respecting natural sites. Embrace cultural sensitivity by dressing modestly at religious sites and being aware of local customs.
