Contrite Jets Suspend Coach After Sideline Trip of Dolphin

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Minutes before the Jets’ strength coach, Sal Alosi, expressed remorse Monday for purposely tripping an opponent on the sideline during a game the day before, Dicky Maegle answered his telephone in Katy, Tex.

Maegle predicted exactly what Alosi would say in his defense: that he was not thinking, that he made a mistake, that it took place in the moment. Maegle knew this because something similar happened to him in the 1954 Cotton Bowl, and when he watched the replay of Alosi’s gross misconduct, the memories came rushing back.

“People don’t understand,” said Maegle, 76, who changed the spelling of his name from Moegle to make it phonetically correct. “It’s not funny. When someone blindsides you like that, you could be injured for life. That’s why they put the chalk lines on the field. To keep your butt behind them.”

After spending Monday afternoon engaged in damage control, an art they have practiced with relatively high frequency this season, the Jets punished Alosi. They suspended Alosi without pay for the remainder of this season, including any possible playoff games, and fined him $25,000. General Manager Mike Tannenbaum said he did not expect further discipline from the N.F.L.

“We take full responsibility,” Tannenbaum said. “We’re going to hold Sal accountable for his actions.”

Alosi said, “I accept responsibility for my actions and respect the team’s decision.”

When asked if the Jets would fire Alosi, Tannenbaum said: “I’m not going to get into hypotheticals. We felt it was the appropriate action to take.”

Alosi became perhaps the first strength coach in league history to draw national attention in season on a Monday — for the wrong reason. He offered another mea culpa from behind the lectern, apologized to Miami cornerback Nolan Carroll and labeled his behavior inexcusable and irresponsible. He added, “You’re asking me to give you a logical explanation for an illogical act.”

Maegle, the victim of another illogical act, had firm ideas on Alosi’s punishment.

“I don’t think they can allow him back on the field for the remainder of the season and maybe the next,” he said before the suspension was announced. “The player didn’t get hurt, but who’s to say he wouldn’t? I’d also fine him.”

In 1954, Maegle played running back for Rice. In the Cotton Bowl against Alabama, with Rice ahead in the second quarter, 7-6, he broke free around right end, juked the future Green Bay quarterback Bart Starr and dashed up what looked like an open sideline.

At least until an Alabama player named Tommy Lewis ran onto the field and tackled Maegle, who finished with 265 rushing yards, a game record at the time, in Rice’s 28-6 triumph. Lewis, Maegle said, appeared to recognize the magnitude of his mistake instantly, as he sat at the end of the bench and dropped his head into his hands.

Soon afterward, Ed Sullivan invited both players to Manhattan to appear on his television show. Maegle went, against his wishes, because Rice wanted the publicity, and he flew on propeller planes from Dallas to Atlanta to Washington to New York.

Maegle said Lewis had apologized after the Cotton Bowl, with tears streaming down his face. Lewis seemed “convivial, nice and polite,” and “very Southern.” Maegle said Lewis told him that he was “so full of Alabama,” he could not stand to watch Maegle score again.

But that went only so far. After the show, Sullivan told Maegle he had booked the two players a single room at the Waldorf Astoria. Maegle requested and received not only separate rooms, but rooms on separate floors.

“I could have ended my career in a wheelchair,” Maegle said. “I had accepted his apology, but who knows? He might have had a nightmare and thrown me out the window.”

The Dolphins took similar issue with Alosi’s actions after he tripped Carroll, who was covering a punt return in the third quarter. Carroll limped to his sideline but later returned. He told reporters the trip “was not important,” but linebackers Channing Crowder and Karlos Dansby disagreed. Crowder told reporters, “I would have gotten up and broken the old man’s leg” and said it spoke “to the character of the Jets.”

The notion surfaced Monday that the Dolphins’ punt-return gunners had continually run up the Jets’ sideline, out of bounds, and perhaps Alosi and others had been instructed to stand closer to the field, acting like a barricade. Alosi and Jets Coach Rex Ryan denied that.

On Monday afternoon, Alosi, a former Hofstra linebacker in his second stint with the Jets, called the Jets’ owner, Woody Johnson; Miami Coach Tony Sparano; and Tannenbaum. Alosi apologized to Carroll at the stadium on Sunday night. Ryan said he “admired” that Alosi had taken responsibility, but added, “I was stunned that something like this actually took place.”

Alosi took more responsibility than the Jets’ players did for their two-game losing streak. During the hour of news-media availability, only 8 of 53 players answered questions.

And Ryan continued to answer for his team’s lack of discipline, or renegade persona, and he was asked if Alosi’s trip counted as the latest example in a growing body of evidence of bad behavior. Ryan disagreed, calling such reasoning unfortunate.

The Jets have three games to right their season, but the incident is likely to stick to Alosi for far longer. Lewis told The San Antonio Express-News in 2003 that “anyone who knows me, and all of my old teammates, would never dare bring it up.”

“They know that play devastated me,” he said, “and I still have to live with it. I can’t take it away.”

Ex-Jets Coach That Tripped Dolphins Player Gets Job With UConn

MANSFIELD (CBSMiami/AP) — Sometimes, a bad decision will live with a person for a long, long time.

The University of Connecticut has hired a former NFL coach to the men's basketball team who made national headlines for tripping a player.

UConn announced Wednesday it has hired Sal Alosi as the team's director of human performance.

The 41-year-old will replace Ed Streit, who was last season's strength and conditioning coach.

Alosi was suspended and fined $25,000 by the New York Jets in December of 2010 after he tripped Miami Dolphins player Nolan Carroll while Carroll was covering a punt.

He was later hired by the University of California, Los Angeles, where he got into a confrontation with Sean "P. Diddy" Combs in 2015.

UConn men's basketball coach Dan Hurley says Alosi has learned from his experiences and will bring "intensity and toughness" to the team.

The details of his contract have not been released.

Jets Suspend Coach for Tripping Dolphins Player: Report

The nfl will reportedly take no further action, by todd wright • published december 13, 2010 • updated on december 15, 2010 at 2:49 pm.

In the heavy-handed world of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell , you'd think the league's version of the death penalty would apply to New York Jets assistant coach Sal Alosi .

Instead, he was sent on an early vacation.

Alosi reportedly will miss the next three games and the postseason (if the Jets even make the playoffs) for tripping Miami Dolphins DB Nolan Carroll as he ran down to cover a punt in Sunday's Miami win.

The punishment was handed down by the Jets, not Goodell, but the NFL signed off on the suspension after saying earlier in the day it would review the incident in conjunction with the Jets..

The intentional trip was caught on national TV and has been played over and over again because of the egregious nature of the act.

Alosi stuck out his knee as Carroll ran by, and the player immediately tumbled to the ground, probably more in shock than anything. Alosi apologized after the game and said he "wasn't thinking" when he decided to cheat for his team.

Most thought Alosi, the Jets strength and conditioning coach, would be fired considering that players have been fined and even threatened with suspension for legal hits on the field.

Apparently, the stringent rules governing player safety and sportsmanship don't apply to coaches on the sideline.

ESPN's Adam Schefter is also reporting Alosi was fined $25,000 for his actions, but he will still keep his job.

What's to stop a coach from sticking his leg out and stopping a player breaking away for a score if all that will happen is a suspension?

Goon Over Miami: Jets Assistant Coach Apologizes for Tripping Dolphins Player

Dec. 12: New York Jets assistant Sal Alosi apologized after blatantly tripping Miami's Nolan Carroll on the sideline during Gang Green's 10-6 loss to the Dolphins Sunday.

New York Jets assistant coach Sal Alosi apologized after blatantly tripping Miami's Nolan Carroll on the sideline during Gang Green's 10-6 loss to the Dolphins Sunday.

The strength and conditioning coach was ushered out of New Meadowlands Stadium by a staff member, ignoring interview requests by the New York Post and protected by two security members at an exit.

After the Jets confirmed he was the guilty tripper and the NFL announced it was reviewing the play, Alosi apologized.

"I made a mistake that showed a total lapse in judgment," Alosi said in a statement, adding that he apologized to Carroll and Dolphins coach Tony Sparano .

"My conduct was inexcusable and unsportsmanlike and does not reflect what this organization stands for. I accept responsibility for my actions as well as any punishment that follows."

"The team is reviewing the situation and is looking into the appropriate next steps,'' Jets media chief Bruce Speicht said in a statement.

During the third quarter of the game, Alosi -- on the sidelines wearing Jets raingear and white tennis shoes -- appeared to stick his left knee out and tripped Carroll as the cornerback ran out of bounds on punt coverage. Carroll fell and had to be attended to by medical staff on the Jets sideline, before eventually returning.

Alosi, who was wearing a green hat at the time, conspicuously switched to a black hat in the middle of the game. Then he took the hat off altogether.

Nolan Carroll Tripped By Sal Alosi: Jets Assistant Coach Intentionally Trips Dolphins Player (VIDEO)

jets coach trips player

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Dolphins cornerback Nolan Carroll was tripped by the New York Jets' strength and conditioning coach on the sideline while covering a punt in the third quarter of Miami's 10-6 victory Sunday.

The rookie fell to the turf while running down the sideline, and the Jets' Sal Alosi later admitted he interfered with Carroll.

"I made a mistake that showed a total lapse in judgment," Alosi said in a statement released by the Jets about 2 1/2 hours after the game. "My conduct was inexcusable and unsportsmanlike and does not reflect what this organization stands for."

Carroll, who had an interception in the first quarter to set up a field goal, lay on the field for several minutes before walking off. He got back into the game in the fourth period.

Carroll said he was not angry about the incident.

"We got a W. That's not my problem," Carroll said. "That's the Jets' problem. We just move on. I felt contact, but I've got to watch film. I can't comment on it right now."

Jets coach Rex Ryan said he was unaware of the situation until informed by Bruce Speight, the team's director of media relations, after the loss. Ryan said the Jets would investigate the matter.

Then Alosi confessed.

"I spoke to coach (Tony) Sparano and Nolan Carroll to apologize before they took off," Alosi said. He added he apologized to Ryan, general manager Mike Tannenbaum and owner Woody Johnson.

"I accept responsibility for my actions as well as any punishment that follows," he said.

Alosi could face discipline from the Jets and from the NFL.

"The only thing I know ... is that my guys were screaming up there at the time," Sparano said. "When Nolan was down on the ground and they showed the thing, somebody from that sideline stuck a foot out. I talked to the referee. I didn't see it at that particular time. I told him at that point that it was on tape and the people upstairs are telling me that's what they see."

Sparano said he would send the film to the league.

"I don't know what else can be done," Sparano said. "There was a player down on the sideline and that's not good. We're trying to take care of players in this game."

Alosi was with the Jets from 2001-2005, then worked for the Falcons for one season. He returned to the Jets in 2007.

Alosi was a linebacker for Hofstra from 1996-2000.

Jets coach ‘unfairly called out players,’ specifically ex-draft bust, last year, report says

The first season for New York Jets offensive line coach Keith Carter began with him taking the blame for Aaron Rodgers’ season-ending Achilles tear and ended with him as the recipient of some social media barbs .

In between, his style did not seem to go over well with some Jets players, according to an ESPN story from Rich Cimini on Sunday.

Privately, some players chafed at Carter’s aggressive style of coaching, saying he unfairly called out players. Sources said his most frequent target was (Mekhi) Becton, who wound up signing with the Eagles.

When the Tennessee Titans fired Mike Vrabel in January, former offensive tackle Taylor Lewan posted on Instagram that he was “blown away” that it happened, wished Vrabel well and singled out Carter: “Loved (Vrabel) as a coach (except 2018) loved his coaching staff (besides Kevin Carter ) it was hard work but it was always worth it.”

In a since-deleted comment , Becton, who was drafted No. 11 overall in 2020, wrote on Lewan’s post, “Second paragraph ain’t nothing BUT FACTS” to the paragraph that mentioned Carter.

Running back Breece Hall quote-tweeted an X post that highlighted the same paragraph with five laughing emojis.

Former NFL fullback Patrick DiMarco, who played for Carter with the Atlanta Falcons in 2015-16, also weighed in with a comment to Lewan’s post on Instagram: “Keith Carter was nobody’s favorite coach and I can say that with a lot of confidence.”

Carter seemed to acknowledge to reporters last week that he needs to deliver his message differently.

“We’ve got to be men of our word,” Carter said, via ESPN. “We’re asking the players to constantly improve and get better. So do we as coaches. I am, I’m a hard charger. I’m a yeller even sometimes when I don’t mean to be. So I am, I’m focusing on making sure my timing is right and I do it the right way.”

Jets GM Joe Douglas did his part to repair the offensive line, signing Tyron Smith, Morgan Moses and John Simpson. It remains to be seen if Carter’s style — or his changed style — makes a difference.

Update 6/22/2015: Alosi is once again in the news, but this time for a very different reason. According to reports P. Diddy was arrested for  allegedly attempting to assault Alosi with a kettlebell at a UCLA workout. Alosi is now a strength coach with the Bruins.

Miami Dolphins defensive back Nolan Carroll was tripped as he ran along the New York Jets' sideline, attempting to cover a punt. Gunners on punt coverage routinely run along the sideline as they are pushed toward the boundary by blockers. This time, however, Carroll was interfered with and tripped by New York Jets strength and conditioning coach Sal Alosi.

Initially, the culprit was unidentified, but Alosi apologized in a statement issued by the team following the game.

"I made a mistake that showed a total lapse in judgment," Alosi said "My conduct was inexcusable and unsportsmanlike and does not reflect what this organization stands for."

Two days after the incident, Alosi was suspended for the remainder of the season and fined $25,000 by the Jets. The NFL also levied a $100,000 fine against the Jets for the incident. According to reports, Alosi told inactive players to stand shoulder-to-shoulder and form a wall on the sideline.

New York Jets Coach Reveals Praise For Polarizing Wide Receiver

Last offseason, the New York Jets made a massive move to acquire Aaron Rodgers in a blockbuster trade with the Green Bay Packers . After making that move, they went on to bring in some of the superstar quarterbacks favorite players. One of those players was wide receiver Allen Lazard.

Lazard was a good, but not great, wide receiver during his time with the Packers. However, he has formed a very good friendship and chemistry with Rodgers.

In order to get Lazard, the Jets decided to give him a big four-year, $44 million contract in free agency. Unfortunately, year one did not go as planned.

During the 2023 season with New York, Lazard was basically a non-factor. He caught just 23 passes for 311 yards and one touchdown.

Clearly, those aren't the numbers that the Jets and their fans were expecting from the 28-year-old wide receiver. He didn't have Rodgers throwing him the ball, but he was unable to make the offense any better without an elite player under center.

Heading into the 2024 season, there has been a lot of speculation that New York could either trade or release Lazard. Despite those speculations and rumors, it seems that Lazard might be back for another year.

In a recent quote, Jets' wide receivers coach Shawn Jefferson showered praise on Lazard . Even with his horrible 2023 production, Lazard seems to be well liked within the organization.

"Since I’ve been here, he’s been like a second coach in the room. He’s been with [quarterback Aaron Rodgers] his whole career. He understands what Aaron wants on this route, where to be against cover 2 or against quarters. That can be a big-time advantage for him and also for us as a whole sharing that in the classroom."

Once again, it seems like Lazard may be saved by the presence of Rodgers and the chemistry he has formed with the superstar quarterback.

Back in 2022, Rodgers and Lazard's last year in Green Bay, the wideout was much more productive. He caught 60 passes for 788 yards and six touchdowns. Lazard caught eight touchdowns back in 2021.

Assuming New York does end up keeping Lazard, they'll be doing it because of his connection with Rodgers. It will be a gamble that he can get back to being productive with the 40-year-old quarterback back under center. Lazard and Rodgers have had plenty success together in the past.

All of that being said, it will be interesting to see what ends up happening with Lazard. He'll still have to prove himself in training camp and preseason action. If he can do that, he'll have one more opportunity in 2024 to prove that he can become a productive part of the Jets' offense.

Czech PM blames failed arson attempt on Russia

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

The Czech prime minister, Petr Fiala, has said a failed arson attack that took place in Prague last week was "very likely" organised and financed by Russia.

Speaking after a meeting of the Czech National Security Council, Mr Fiala said the failed attack was evidently part of a "hybrid" campaign of sabotage being run by Moscow against European countries.

Police said a foreign citizen was arrested on Saturday in connection with the incident and was being held in custody on terrorism charges.

He was described as "a Spanish-speaking man originally from South America" and had apparently been in the country for five days.

The prime minister said the attempt to set to fire to buses at a depot in Prague was likely connected to a spate of arson attacks in Europe that he said appeared to be orchestrated by Moscow.

These, he said, included May's arson attack in Warsaw, and a similar attack in a branch of Ikea in Lithuania, which authorities believe were carried out by Russian intelligence agents or their proxies.

“The connection [to Russia] is not only possible, but highly probable,” Mr Fiala told reporters. "The attack was probably organised and financed from Russia."

The BBC has approached the Russian foreign ministry for comment on Mr Fiala's allegations.

Police beefed up patrols across the Czech capital last Friday after claims of a heightened risk to security.

They released CCTV footage apparently showing a dark-haired man paying for items in a shop or petrol station. They said the man was possibly dangerous and should not be approached, but gave no further information.

Police president Martin Vondrasek said the man had been apprehended the following day.

“On Friday we asked the public for assistance. On Saturday morning the suspect was arrested. On Sunday afternoon a criminal prosecution was launched, and today [Monday] a court ordered he be remanded in custody,” Mr Vondrasek told journalists at a news briefing.

The man - described as a 26-year-old of South American origin - is accused of trying to set fire to buses at a public transport depot in Prague’s Klicov district in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Local media initially reported that he had spilt petrol over several buses at the depot, but failed to set them on fire.

However, a spokeswoman for Prague's public transport authority was quoted by news outlet Novinky.cz as saying the man had set several buses alight, and the fires were subsequently extinguished by depot workers. The fires caused an estimated 200,000 Czech crowns (£6,864; $8,738) of damage, she said.

He now faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted under terrorism legislation - 30 if given an exemplary sentence.

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Czech government has become one of Ukraine’s most ardent supporters, providing military assistance including artillery, tanks and ammunition.

However the mutual antipathy predates the February 2022 invasion.

The government in Prague says Russia’s GRU intelligence service was behind the 2014 explosions at a Czech arms dump that left two people dead.

The Czech Republic was the second country - after the US - to be placed on Russia’s list of "unfriendly nations" after a series of diplomatic expulsions that followed an investigation into the explosions.

Moscow denies any involvement in the incident.

Russia was scared to fly its Su-57 in combat, fearing a loss. Ukraine scored a hit on one anyway.

Russia has largely kept its Su-57 fighter jets out of the war in Ukraine, fearing a combat loss.

But on Saturday, Ukrainian forces struck one of the aircraft hundreds of miles from the battlefield.

It marked the first-ever hit on Russia's much-celebrated fighter.

Russia has tried to keep its very limited number of Su-57 fighter jets hidden from the war in Ukraine, fearing that a combat loss would be a blow to the aircraft's reputation, according to Western intelligence and aviation experts.

But over the weekend, Ukraine damaged one of the fifth-generation fighters anyway in a long-range strike hundreds of miles inside Russian territory, underscoring the vulnerabilities to Moscow's most-celebrated weapons — even if they're far from the battlefield.

A Su-57 was "hit for the first time" on Saturday in an attack on Russia's Akhtubinsk airfield, located more than 365 miles from the front line, the Ukrainian Main Directorate of Intelligence wrote in a statement on the Telegram messaging app.

To back up its claims, the HUR shared satellite imagery purportedly showing some damage to the aircraft as a result of the strike, as well as visible explosion and burn marks on the tarmac in the immediate vicinity of the fighter jet.

The extent of the damage is ultimately unclear, and Business Insider was unable to immediately verify the imagery.

Multiple Su-57s could be seen at the Akhtubinsk airfield as early as December 2022, according to satellite images shared by Britain's defense ministry.

In both images, the Su-57s appear parked outside without any hardened shelters. The Saturday imagery does appear to reveal some sort of arched structure, but whatever it is did not prevent the attack, which was reportedly carried out by a low-cost Ukrainian drone.

This particular detail has not gone over well with Moscow's war commentators.

"Russian milbloggers seized on the June 8 strike to criticize the Russian military command for not constructing hangars to hide Russian aircraft from Ukrainian strikes," analysts at the Institute for the Study of War think tank wrote in a Monday assessment .

The milbloggers "claimed that Russian forces could construct hangars at every military airfield in Russia for the cost of one Su-57 aircraft," which costs an estimated $35 million, the analysts noted.

Russia's problematic Su-57 program

The twin-engine Su-57, known by NATO as the 'Felon,' is Russia's first attempt at a fifth-generation fighter , although analysts have often questioned whether the aircraft can actually claim that status considering that it apparently lacks some of the necessary capabilities.

Russian state media has often touted the Su-57 as being comparable to — or even better than — American fifth-generation stealth fighters like the F-22 and F-35. But it is riddled with technical issues , including a lack of stealth-capable engines and body panels that are tight enough to sufficiently reduce the radar signature.

The aircraft first saw combat in Syria in 2018 and was delivered to the Russian military in 2020. Kremlin officials have claimed that the Su-57 has seen combat in Ukraine, although the evidence supporting the claims is extremely limited.

Western intelligence and aviation experts have said that Russia's reluctance to employ the Su-57 in combat suggests it is eager to avoid any reputational damage, the loss of sensitive technologies, and reduced export possibilities that could occur if the aircraft is shot down by Ukraine. Additionally, Moscow may not be confident in the aircraft's purported stealth capabilities.

The HUR said that the Su-57 is Russia's "most modern fighter," capable of launching Kh-59/69 missiles, and there are only "a few" of the fighters in service. Ukraine's Southern Command specified that Kyiv on Saturday struck one of six operational aircraft. Moscow has a similar number of unfinished jets.

Russian state media has suggested the military will eventually field dozens of Su-57s by the end of the decade, but it's unclear if these plans will materialize.

Justin Bronk, an airpower and technology expert at the UK-based Royal United Services Institute think tank, said the Ukrainian strike on Saturday is a "significant symbolic blow" to Moscow's "long-troubled" Su-57 program, though its direct effect on the war will be "almost non-existent."

"Due to its small fleet size, the political humiliation if one were to be shot down, and slow aircraft systems development, the Su-57 has played an extremely minor role in the conflict to date," Bronk wrote in a Monday analysis .

He said that the strike demonstrates that Ukraine has a "relatively mature low-cost long-range harassment capability" that it can use to strike military bases deep inside Russia.

Ukraine has relied on an arsenal of homemade, long-range exploding drones to repeatedly strike military and energy targets hundreds of miles inside Russian territory over the past few months because Kyiv had been unable to do so with Western-provided missiles. Some of these restrictions, however, have been relaxed in recent weeks, giving Ukraine more options.

This Underrated Player Was Best Addition For New York Jets

Brad wakai | may 31, 2024.

New York Jets helmet on the sidelines

  • New York Jets

The New York Jets needed to be aggressive in the offseason.

General manager Joe Douglas and head coach Robert Saleh knew that as soon as their 2023-24 campaign was over.

After another lost year that saw their franchise quarterback rupture his Achilles tendon on the fourth snap of the opener, they needed pursue upgrades that would give them the best chance possible to finally compete in their division and conference as a whole in 2024.

The offensive line unit was a complete mess last season, so Douglas went out and added three players via trade or in free agency. Not having a solid backup quarterback turned out to be a major issue, so they signed veteran Tyrod Taylor. Knowing they needed more weapons for Aaron Rodgers to throw to, the Jets handed big-play threat Mike Williams a deal.

All that preceded New York drafting one of the best offensive tackles in Olu Fashanu, then selecting yards-after-the-catch-machine Malachi Corley .

With strong additions on the offensive side of the ball, there are plenty of choices to generate excitement.

However, Michael Nania of Jets X Factor thinks it's their unheralded offensive line addition, John Simpson, who is going to be the best one.

"Whenever I watch him on film, I consistently come away feeling like he's far better than what he's billed as. Call me crazy, but I feel like the Jets could be getting a top-15 starting left guard in Simpson," he writes.

That would certainly be welcome for the Jets after handing him a two-year, $12 million deal.

What Simpson brings to the table is his ability to be a mauler in the running game, something that should allow Breece Hall to get back to being the elite running back he looked to be during his rookie season before his ACL and meniscus tear.

With horrendous quarterback play and a poor offensive profile, Hall still almost put up 1,000 yards, but only did so on 4.5 yards per carry compared to the 5.8 he was doing in 2022.

Out of the four new offensive lineman brought in, it makes sense as to why Simpson is the one who generates the least amount of hype on paper.

With his average to below-average grades by Pro Football Focus, potential Hall of Famer Tyron Smith, previous Jet Morgan Moses, and potential star rookie Fashanu are all going to dominate the headlines.

Still, Nania thinks that the offensive guard is going to prove himself valuable on the field.

"Don't forget to mention John Simpson in your discussions about the Jets' revamped offensive line ... I'm not saying we should start taking measurements for his Canton bust, but I feel comfortable predicting that Simpson will be a top 10-15 left guard this year. I love his game and I think Jets fans will feel the same once they see him on the field," he adds.

Ex-LSU player Josh Maravich, son of Hall of Famer Pete Maravich, dead at age 42

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

COVINGTON, La. — Former LSU basketball player Josh Maravich, son of late Hall of Fame basketball player Pete Maravich, has died at age 42, the university announced Saturday night.

He died at home on Friday, the LSU statement said. No cause of death has been released.

Josh Maravich was a reserve for LSU — which plays home games in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center — from the 2001-02 to 2004-05 seasons under then-coach John Brady.

Josh Maravich, left, shakes hands with coach John Brady as his mother, Jackie Maravich, center, watches during Senior Day events before LSU's game against Vanderbilt on March 5, 2005, at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. Josh, the son of the late Hall of Fame legend, died at age 42.

For the younger Maravich, it was a childhood dream to play for LSU, where his father set the men’s NCAA Division I scoring record of 3,667 points between 1967 and 1970.

“I wanted to come here for my dad to make him proud,” Josh Maravich said in a 2005 article in The Daily Reveille, the LSU student newspaper.

“I knew I wasn’t going to be a star player, but for me being a walk-on was what I always wanted to do.”

Pete Maravich was a prolific scorer during an NBA career that was cut short in 1980 by lingering effects of a major knee injury a couple years prior.

In 1988, at age 40, he died from a heart condition that had gone undetected.

Pete Maravich was a prolific scorer during an NBA career that was cut short in 1980 by lingering effects of a major knee injury a couple years prior.

Earlier this year, he was back in the headlines when his Division I scoring mark — which went unmatched by any men’s or women’s player for more than half a century — was surpassed by Iowa star Caitlin Clark (3,951 points).

In 2022, when LSU unveiled a bronze statue of Pete Maravich outside its basketball facility, sculptor Brian Hanlon credited Josh Maravich and his older brother Jaeson Maravich with the idea to depict their father — who was known for his showmanship and creativity — making a behind-the-back pass.
