It lies in close proximity to the tea gardens of Dooars which acts as an added incentive. Here is a snippet of travel guide to see in Jaldapara National Park.

How to Reach

How to Reach: Jaldapara National Park Tourism And Travel Guide

By Air:

Surrounded by wilderness, the closest airport to Jaldapara is Bagdogra Airport in Siliguri . The airport is located 145 km from the national park and can be reached by cabs and buses. Bagdogra enjoys commendable connectivity with major airports of the country like Kolkata , Mumbai , Delhi and Chennai . They have public and private airlines operating flights regularly in and out of Bagdogra. The latter is an important airport that helps to connect North Bengal and Northeast India with the rest of the country.

Jaldapara has a railway station located 7 km away in Madarihat and most trains do not stop here. The closest operational stations are in Hasimara and Birpara, both of which are located 20 km from the park. Most major express trains stop here. However, the most important railhead is New Jalpaiguri Railway Station in Jalpaiguri. It is one of the major railway junctions in North Bengal and north-east India. The station helps to connect the eastern states with other major cities. There is a large number of express and special trains make a stop here before heading towards the northeast.

Jaldapara is well connected by road to different parts of the state. It lies on a National Highway which allows people to reach Jaldapara from Siliguri in only 3 hours. The entry point to the park is Madarihat, which lies on NH31. There are regular bus services between Jaldapara and neighboring areas. Bhutan Government buses, North Bengal State Transport Corporation buses, and minibuses are abundantly available for ferrying people to different parts of the state like Siliguri and Alipurduar via Madarihat which gives access to the national park.

Weather and Best Time to Visit

Weather and Best Time to Visit: Jaldapara National Park Tourism And Travel Guide

Summer (March to June):

Summer in Jaldapara is quite hot and humid with temperatures ranging between 32°C and 40°C. Despite the heat, it is one of the better times to visit Jaldapara if you want to spot animals. Because of the heat, they come out of their hiding to go to river banks for drinking water, particularly in the mornings and evenings. It is relatively easier to spot them during these times. As the morning grows it becomes hotter and they tend to take refuge in their shelter.

Monsoon (June to September):

Monsoon in Jaldapara brings heavy showers. The incessant rains make sightseeing difficult and the park is closed to tourists. Safaris are canceled for the entire monsoon period from June to September. Moreover, monsoon also happens to be the breeding season of the animals and they prefer to remain in their hideout and do not venture out much. It is difficult to spot them.

Winter (October to March):

The months following monsoon, in October and November, leaves are green and fresh and because of the rains, the grasses grow in height and thickness. Spotting animals during these months is tough because they hide well behind the tall grasses. These two months experience some light rainfall which makes safaris difficult. With the onset of the winter, the grasses become thinner and trees shade leaves and weather improves. Animal movement increases and is easier to spot. A visit to Jaldarapara till March is a good idea.

Jaldapara National Park : A Detailed Travel Guide

gaur-jaldapara

Jaldapara is arguably the most preferred wildlife destination of Dooars and is almost in every tourist’s bucket list interested in flora and fauna of Dooars.

Blessed to be born in Dooars and my native place – Jalpaiguri at a distance of 75 km from Jaldapara, I pay a visit to this beautiful grassland quite frequently.

Habitat & Wildlife at Jaldapara:

Drained by rivers Torsa, Malangi, Hollong and Buri Torsa, the park provides extensive grassland which is the abode to a wide variety of mammals, amphibians, reptiles and avian life.

Jaldapara is the home to one-horned rhinoceros and one of the last few refuges of this endangered species. Elephants, Gaur, Deers, Leopard, Wild Boar and host of avian species like Hornbills, Eagles and Raptors play their games at Jaldapara.

This time I was a solo traveller with the sole objective to drive into the park in the evening. From my experiences, I prefer sunset safaris if my target is mammals. In the evening mammals are most active and it’s relatively easy to spot them also the beautiful golden light of the evening creates awesome images.

I reached Jaldapara and had my lunch at Jaldapara Tourist Lodge. Safari tickets and the vehicle starts from the compound of Jaldapara Tourist Lodge. Like a child, I was eagerly waiting for the happy hour at 3.00 pm. Sharp at 3.00 pm we started to drove into the park. I was accompanied by the by Bhola – my guide and the driver.

Jungle Safari:

As we enter Jaldapara through Madariha Gate, the forest was flooded with hues of green. I saw a few vehicles lined-up at the far end of the narrow corridor. I instructed our driver to rush to the place. A mammoth tusker was standing tall – the real “King of Jaldapara”. Unfortunately, we were the last vehicle. The tusker took a few steps towards us, and there was utter pandemonium. People started to scream and shout. Every safari vehicles were on the back gear in tandem with the pace of the king, but the king was not in the mood to stop. Few guides got busy trying to compel it to go deep into the woods. Finally, it moved into away. Disturbing animals in their hinterland maybe for own safety is always a moral conundrum.

It was in a state of “musth” – a sexually aggressive period of elephants. Their temporal glands become swollen, from where a strong smelling fluid, rich of testosterone, runs down on their cheeks.

All vehicles hurried off. I decided to cross the spot and wait on the other side. From my experiences, I knew it will come up again on the road and follow the smell of the female. Within a span of 10 minutes it emerged from the woods, displaying its tusks and the gigantic power, yet so gentle and sober. I took a few photographs and drove further down for – Hollong.

Our first stopover was at Hollong Bungalow – an old heritage forest bungalow. Hollong has a salt lick and animals sighting is quite common in Hollong. As I reached Hollong, there was a rhino and a gaur. A peafowl was perched at a treetop. I was able to get a silhouette with the backlight. Call of the peafowl’s reverberated through the woods. The gaur had lost its tail and had a scar in its right ear, maybe leopard had attacked in its early years. We were the last of the vehicles to leave from Hollong. Dark clouds hovered over us, the light suddenly dropped. I decided to head for Jaldapara Watchtower skipping Harinjhora Watchtower.

There are grasslands on both sides of the road leading to Jaldapara Watchtower. On the way, I saw a herd of elephant and gaur deep inside the forest. As we were about to reach Jaldapara Watchtower, I saw a rhino busy grazing.

It sated to downpour, I packed my camera. Three of us put the hood of the gypsy and proceeded for return. I was an amazing experience to drive through the greens. Drizzle was icing on the cake. A male gaur peeped its head from the woods, where in the world can you have such an experience…

I had to skip the “Bodo Dance Show” which is included only in the last safari due to bad weather.

  • January 4, 2023

Alipurduar is one of the prominent districts in West Bengal.

The region’s lush green woods and tea gardens are part of the splendor and beauty of Alipurduar.

The woods of the Alipurduar are home to several rare and endangered animals, including tigers, rhinoceroses, and elephants.

Deer of various species, bison, birds, and reptiles are among the other creatures.

In this article, you will get to know about the following places in Alipurduar,

  • Jaldapara National Park
  • Jayanti River & Forest
  • Buxa Tiger Reserve
  • Chilapata Forest
  • Kunjanagar Eco Park

Let’s see each of these places in detail.

1. Buxa Fort

jaldapara nearest tourist places

You can reach Buxa Fort by trekking through the Buxa Tiger Reserve. This fort is one of the earliest forts in Eastern India.

The Bhutanese King built the fort to secure the Silk Trade route between Bhutan and India.

Previously the fort was a bamboo wood structure. It was later reconstructed as a stone structure with high-security prisons.

Many national revolutionaries, block leaders, and poets were imprisoned here. The Britishers used this fort as a detention camp. It is surrounded by greenery and thick brick walls.

Buxa Fort is also rich in wildlife. If you are lucky, you can spot black-striped tigers roaming in the thick undergrowth of the fort. Here you can also spot elephants, deer, leopards, buffaloes, and Himalayan birds.

Do not forget to take pictures of this historical landmark and the diverse wildlife.

2. Jaldapara National Park

Jaldapara National Park is located in the eastern Himalayan foothills and is home to a wide range of wildlife and lush foliage. The Malangi River flowing here is also one of the popular attractions.

The only means to travel through this forest are on elephant backs and jeep safaris. Most of the woodland is savannah and is covered in tall elephant grass.

The Asiatic one-horned rhinoceros is the sanctuary’s main draw. Tiger, elephant, deer, sambhar, barking deer, spotted deer, hog deer, wild pig, and bison are among the other animals found here.

Jaldapara is also a haven for avian enthusiasts. It is one of the few locations in India where one can see the Bengal florican, commonly known as the Bengal Bustard, along with the lesser pied hornbill, jungle fowl, peafowl, partridge, and crested eagle.

Early in the morning, you can plan an exciting elephant safari to view the vivid flora and fauna of the sanctuary.

3. Madarihat

Madarihat is a small town on the outskirts of Jaldapara National Park. This is located in the Eastern Himalayan foothills along the Torsa River.

This place will probably be your base and shelter if you want to explore the Jaldapara National Park. The park is famous for its rhinoceros. The forest office to report to for safari rides at the park is in Madarihat.

Travelers visit this town to explore the wilderness and its picturesque scenery, surrounded by lush green tea gardens, deciduous forests, and hilly terrain.

You can also visit Chilapata, an elephant corridor between the Jaldapara and Buxa forests, and Phuentsholing, where you can see crocodiles.

Traveling through the dense forest and spotting wild animals, or simply enjoying the beauty of the lush tea garden with a drop-back view of the Jaldapara and lofty mountain, is sure to rejuvenate your mind with its beauty and diverse culture.

Here nature and society coexist peacefully.

There are many different birds and animals to witness here, including elephants, tigers, leopards, wild dogs, and barking deer.

The lovely Jayanti River flows on one side of the Jayanti woodland.

It remains dry most of the year, but monsoon fills it up.

You can take amazing photos of the forest landscape and its stunning natural beauty from the river bank.

The interior of the dense forest is also known to have one of the Adi Shakti Peethas. Jeeps are available that will take you to the temple.

5. Buxa Tiger Reserve

Buxa Tiger Reserve is a significant destination set up between 1982 and 1983 for the protection of tigers. The Tiger reserve was declared a National Park in 1992.

The panoramic hilly landscape of the reserve covers an area of 759 sq km with eight distinct forest types, numerous rivers, and their tributaries running along it.

The Tiger reserve serves as an international doorway for the migration of elephants from Bhutan and India.

The National Park is rich in medicinal plants and orchids.

Numerous species are unique to the area, including the Chinese Pangolin, the Regal Python, and the Clouded Leopard.

The animal variety includes over 230 recognized species, 67 mammal species, and 36 reptile species, including indigenous and migratory species.

The Black-necked Crane is one of India’s rarest birds and is spotted in this reserve during the early winter.

More than 300 tree species, 250 shrub species, 400 plant species, about 09 cane species, and a few bamboo species are found here.

6. Chilapata Forest

Chilapata Forest is a dense forest in the Dooars region of West Bengal. It is located near Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary.

This place is close to Hasimara town and about 22 kilometers away from Alipurduar.

Elephants use this forest as a passageway in their annual migration from Jaldapara to the Buxa Tiger Reserve and ultimately to Bhutan.

The local environment is teeming with different species of Flora and Fauna.

The forest also offers you opportunities like angling, birding, and safari. Jeep Safaris can be an excellent option for exploring the wilderness of the jungle. You can also spot many rhinoceros in the forest.

The safaris can be taken from the Madarihat Jaldapara Tourist Lodge and Kodalbasti Point.

The forest looks more vibrant during the monsoons.

Many wildlife photographers and adventure seekers enjoy trekking through the interiors of the forest.

There are street food stalls selling momos and chow mein near the border. The Jaigaon region is relatively small and can be explored by walking.

This location also houses the one-of-a-kind Dalsinghpara Buddist church, with a beautiful blend of Buddhist engineering and Christian spirit. Garuchira, Raimatang, and Bhutan Gate are some other attractions in Jaigaon.

8. Kunjanagar Eco Park

Kunjanagar Eco Park is an ideal place for an outing in Alipurduar. It is a popular place for a picnic and is frequently used for educational excursions.

There is an amusement park here that can provide you with day-long refreshments. Tourists can also see elephants, deer, and leopards here. The park also has boating facilities.

Kunjanagar also has a suspension bridge, a center for wild animal rescue operations, and a watchtower. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose is said to have sought refuge in Kunjanagar, where he stayed at the Soulmari Ashram.

The dense jungles and cornfields around it also provide an excellent opportunity for exploring wildlife. You can also opt for a jungle safari in the Jaldapara National Park and Buxa Tiger Reserve from here, where you can spot several wildlife and take photographs of them.

These are some of the best places to visit in the Alipurduar district of West Bengal.

So if you want to escape the hassles of city life, you can visit these places to spend a splendid holiday amidst nature.
