I'll Never Find Another You by The Seekers
- There's a new world somewhere They call the promised land And I'll be there someday If you could hold my hand I still need you there beside me No matter what I do For I know I'll never find another you There is always someone For each of us, they say And you'll be my someone Forever and a day I could search the whole world over Until my life is through But I know I'll never find another you It's a long, long journey So stay by my side When I walk through the storm You'll be my guide, be my guide If they gave me a fortune My pleasure would be small I could lose it all tomorrow And never mind at all But if I should lose your love, dear I don't know what I'd do For I know I'll never find another you But if I should lose your love, dear I don't know what I'd do For I know I'll never find another you Another you, another you Writer/s: Tom Springfield Publisher: Warner Chappell Music, Inc. - Sherry from Oregon To me this song is about my husband and not about lost love. I can hear the connection to God and although that is not howe I choose to interpret it, that's a lovely thought. It's going to be sung by my niece and her husband at my husband's funeral next week. The comments about Judith's voice, the harmony and the guitar are so true. Listening to it helps me process my grief.
- Juan Concha from Calama , Chilr In the Australian Farrewell Tour show 2013 they change a line: I"ll still need your help beside me Instesd of I"ll still need you there beside me For me there is a lot of difference between needing your help and needing you beside me
- Ts from New Jersey My boyfriend and I would sing this song as we were driving somewhere. When we get to the part "I'll never find another you", we would face each other to sing that part of the song. I cry now when I hear it because he passed on a year ago. I know I'll never find another you (him).
- Boo Blue from Ky This brings back an innocent/happy time, I was such a little girl. I woke up this morning singin this song, do not know why. Memories of a younger, happier time. Beautiful.
- Gareth from Uk Great tune, Slim Whiteman did a very nice cover.
- Average Joe from The States Suprised, even at 1st glance of the group's name alone, & then to hear the lyrics, was this not one of those "closet" Christian songs that the writer didn't feel he could get on anyone's playlist if they went ahead and identified the person the lyrics are about? Sounds like they are talking about Jesus. GREAT song, & love the lyrics. If they were "seeking" as the group's name indicates, are the lyrics, what they found as the answer to their seeking? Kind of hard not, to make the connection.
- Gene Klingbeil from Burnsville, Mn. Love this song!
- Robert from Tennessee This was out when I met my first love. Will never forget her or judith. Great great great song!!!!
- Baz from Manchester Uk Brilliant song ..... the groups harmony is fantastic, Judith Durham is a goddess, The Seekers forever.
- Paul Bwalya from Zambia I love this type of music. The Golden Oldies. Thanks alot.
- Barry from Sauquoit, Ny On August 31st 1969, Sonny James performed "I'll Never Find Another You" on the CBS-TV program 'Hee Haw'... Two years earlier in 1967 it peaked at #1 on Billboard's Hot Country Singles chart; it was the second in a string of an amazing sixteen #1 records on the country chart by Mr. James... The #1s started with "Need You" in 1967 and ended with "Here Comes Honey Again" in 1971... 'The Southern Gentleman' celebrated his 87th birthday three months ago May 1st {2015}.
- Esskayess from Dallas, Tx A college roommate of mine almost ruined this one for me, saying that certain fraternaties there should replace the word "you" with "ewe."
- Peter Steele from Medicine Hat Ab, Ab This is my favorite song of all time...I cry EVERYTIME that I hear it...the melody goes right through my body and I stop everything I am doing when I hear this song...if I ever get married this will be my Wedding Song
- Sara from Eckerty, In I first heard this song when I was 10 years old, it remains one of my favorite.
- Tony from Levittown, Pa Hello, Judith Durham is my favorite singer ever. And as two other people have stated here, she is incredibly Blessed with the best voice of any woman I have ever heard or ever will here, at least on this planet. Thank you.
- Charlie from Cape Girardeau, Mo Ditto the previous comments about Judith Durham and chord structure. The harmonies and the nice 12-string guitar riff make this a hauntingly beautiful song.
- Vicki from Houston, Tx Judith has the most beautiful voice, she is blessed to sound like that.
- Derek from Cambridge, New Zealand Judith Durham was a legend ,and still is! Her voice is superb, and summed up the 60s in the UK. Always makes me think of Carnaby Street and the King's Road in Chelsea, London.
- Jim from Adelaide, Australia The chord structure has a hymnal quality, when one analyzes it technically. The lyrics may give a clue as well - new world, long journey, stay by my side.
- Howard from St. Louis Park, Mn Judith Durham put a lot into the song. She was also the key to Georgy Girl becoming The Seekers biggest hit.
- Johnny from Bridgeport, Oh Great, song, greatlyrics.Judith Durham got the best voice of any women I ever heard. She can really belt it out like no other. You should here her sing 'Danny Boy'

Angela Zhang - Journey Lyrics
Artist: Angela Zhang

It's a long long journey Till I know whera I'm supposed to be It's a long long journey And I don't know if I can believe When shadows fall and block my eyes I am lost and know that I must hide It's a long long journey Till I find my way home to you Many days I've spent Drifting on through empty shores Wondering what's my purpose Wondering how to make me strong I know I will falter I know I will cry I know you'll be standing by my side It's a long long journey And I need to be close to you Sometimes it feels no one understands I don't even know why I do the things I do When pride builds me up till I can't see my soul Will you break down these walls and pull me through? Cause It's a long long journey Till I feel that I am worth the price You paid for me on calvary Beneath those stormy skies When Satan mocks and friends turn to foes It feel like everything is out to make me lose control Cause it's a long long journey Till I find my way home to you.to you

Respect your soul: don't keep repeating "I'm going to make it". Your soul already knows that, what it needs is to use the long journey to be able to grow, stretch along the horizon, touch the sky. An obsession does not help you at all to reach your objective, and even ends up taking the pleasure out of the climb. But pay attention: also, don't keep saying "it's harder than I thought", because that will make you lose your inner strength.

So we'll start by sending astronauts to an asteroid for the first time in history. By the mid-2030s I believe we can send humans to orbit Mars and return them safely to Earth. And a landing on Mars will follow and I expect to be around in see it.

When Did Everything Become a ‘Journey’?
Changing our hair, getting divorced, taking spa vacations — they’re not just things we do; they’re “journeys.” The quest for better health is the greatest journey of all.
By Lisa Miller
Drew Barrymore has been talking with Gayle King about her perimenopause “journey ,” and the soccer phenom Carli Lloyd has just divulged her fertility “journey .” By sharing her breast cancer story, Olivia Munn has said she hopes she will “help others find comfort, inspiration, and support on their own journey.” A recent interview with Anne Hathaway has been posted on Instagram with a headline highlighting her “ sobriety journey ,” and Kelly Clarkson has opened up about what Women’s Health calls her “ weight loss journey .” On TikTok, a zillion influencer-guides lead pilgrims on journeys through such ephemeral realms as faith, healing, grief, friendship, mastectomy, and therapy — often selling courses, supplements or eating plans as if they were talismans to help safeguard their path.
Listen to this article with reporter commentary
“Journey” has decisively taken its place in American speech. The word holds an upbeat utility these days, signaling struggle without darkness or detail, and expressing — in the broadest possible way — an individual’s experience of travails over time.
It’s often related to physical or mental health, but it can really be about anything: “Putting on your socks can be a journey of self-discovery,” said Beth Patton, who lives in Central Indiana and has relapsing polychondritis, an inflammatory disorder. In the chronic disease community, she said, “journey” is a debated word. “It’s a way to romanticize ordinary or unpleasant experiences, like, ‘Oh, this is something special and magical.’” Not everyone appreciates this, she said.
According to the linguistics professor Jesse Egbert at Northern Arizona University, the use of “journey” (the noun) has nearly doubled in American English since 1990, with the most frequent instances occurring online. Mining a new database of conversational American English he and colleagues are building, Egbert could show exactly how colloquial “journey” has become: One woman in Pennsylvania described her “journey to become a morning person,” while another, in Massachusetts, said she was “on a journey of trying to like fish.”
Egbert was able to further demonstrate how the word itself has undergone a transformative journey — what linguists call “semantic drift.” It wasn’t so long ago that Americans mostly used “journey” to mean a literal trip, whereas now it’s more popular as a metaphor. Egbert demonstrated this by searching the more than one billion words in a database called COCA for the nouns people put before “journey” to clarify what sort they’re on. Between 1990 and 2005, the most common modifier was “return,” followed by words like “ocean,” “train,” “mile,” “night,” “overland,” and “bus.”
But between 2006 and 2019, usage shifted. “Return” remains the most common noun modifier to journey, but now it’s followed closely by “faith,” “cancer,” and “life.” Among the top 25 nouns used to modify “journey” today are: “soul,” “adoption,” and “hair.”
In almost every language, “journey” has become a way to talk abstractly about outcomes, for good reason: According to what linguists call the “primary metaphor theory,” humans learn as babies crawling toward their toys that “‘purpose’ and ‘destination’ coincide,” said Elena Semino, a linguist at Lancaster University who specializes in metaphor. As we become able to accomplish our goals while sitting still (standardized tests! working from home!), ambition and travel diverge. Yet we continue to envision achievement as a matter of forward progress. This is why we say, “‘I know what I want, but I don’t know how to get there,’” Semino explained. “Or ‘I’m at a crossroads.’”
So it’s not surprising, perhaps, that as Americans started seeing good health as a desirable goal, achievable through their own actions and choices — and marketers encouraged these pursuits and commodified them — the words “journey” and “health” became inextricably linked. In 1898, C.W. Post wrote a pamphlet he called “The Road to Wellville,” which he attached to each box of his new product, Grape-Nuts. In 1926, the Postum Cereal Company republished the pamphlet as a small book , now with the subtitle, “A Personally Conducted Journey to the Land of Good Health by the Route of Right Living.”
The language (and business) of self-help so completely saturates culture, “it gets kind of hard to trace where a word started and where it came from,” said Jessica Lamb-Shapiro, author of “Promise Land: My Journey Through America’s Self-Help Culture.” Americans like to put an optimistic, brave spin on suffering, and “journey” seeped in because, Lamb-Shapiro speculated, it’s bland enough to “tackle really difficult things,” yet positive enough to “make them palatable and tolerable.”
“Journey” had fully entered medical speak by the 2010s. Many cancer patients recoiled from the “battle” language traditionally used by doctors, as well as by friends and relatives. In “Illness as Metaphor,” Susan Sontag had noted back in 1978 that “every physician and every attentive patient is familiar with, if perhaps inured to, this military terminology.” But now, opposition to the notion of disease as an enemy combatant reached a crescendo. To reflexively call an experience of cancer a battle created “winners” and “losers,” where death or long suffering represented a failure — of will, strength, determination, diet, behavior, or outlook — on the part of the patient.
Many patients “detest” the military metaphor, Robert Miller conceded in Oncology Times in 2010. Knowing this, Miller, then a breast cancer oncologist affiliated with Johns Hopkins, said he struggled to find the right words in composing a condolence note to a patient’s spouse. “I welcome suggestions,” he wrote.
“Journey” seemed less judgmental, more neutral. In Britain, the National Health Service had started to almost exclusively use “journey” language in reference to cancer (treatments were “pathways”). Semino, the metaphor expert whose father had died of cancer at a time when patients’ diagnoses were hidden from them, wanted to examine how patients talked about it — and whether that language caused them harm. In a research paper Semino published with colleagues in 2015, she looked at how patients talked about their cancer on forums online and found that they still used “battle” as often as they did “journey,” and that “journey” could be disempowering, as well.
For some people, talking about cancer as a “journey” gave them a sense of control and camaraderie — buddies traveling the same path — but others used the term to convey their exhaustion. Having cancer “is like trying to drive a coach and horses uphill with no back wheels on the coach,” one man wrote. Patients used “journey” to describe just how passive they felt or how reluctant to bear the burden of their disease. Separately, patients have told Semino how much they hate the word “journey,” saying it trivializes their experience, that it’s clichéd.
But it was too late: The metaphor already was everywhere. In 2014, Anna Wintour was asked which word she would like to banish from the fashion lexicon and she said, “journey.” The following year, Yolanda Foster, the mother of Gigi and Bella Hadid, told People magazine that while she was on her Lyme disease journey, two of her children were afflicted, too. Medical journals and government publications began describing insomnia , the effort to achieve health-care reform , diabetes , and the development of RSV vaccines as a journey. The term “healing journey,” in use since at least the mid-2010s, blew up around 2021. The phrase in news media referenced the experience of cancer , celebrity weight loss , trafficking of Indigenous children , Sean Combs’s creative process , spa vacations , amputation , and better sex .
On the Reddit channel Chronic Illness, one poster eloquently fumed that persistent sickness is not a journey. “It’s endless, pointless and repetitive. There’s no new ground to gain here.” The cultural insistence on illness as a journey, from which a traveler can learn useful, or even life-changing lessons, becomes something to “disassociate from, survive, endure.” It “causes social isolation.”
Although she concedes its downsides, Stephanie Swanson likes to think of herself as on a journey. Swanson, who is 37 and lives in Kansas City, was an engineer by training, with three young children, a career and a sideline as an aerialist, when she got long Covid in the summer of 2022. The things that had made her successful — her physical stamina, her ability to solve problems — evaporated. “I’ve had to give up my career, my hobbies, my physical abilities,” she said. “I’ve gained 30 pounds on my tiny dancer body. I’m doing the best I can with what I have.”
Swanson makes a distinction between “journey” and “trip”: The latter is circumscribed by a start, an end, and hotel and restaurant reservations along the way. She sees “journey” as a way to capture the arc of a whole life.
When she was running operations at a medical center at the University of Kansas, she always imagined slowing down to enjoy her kids more or to read a book, but “I felt like my head was going to explode.” Now Swanson has become a person who must rent a wheelchair for her upcoming trip to New York City, and she likes how “journey” accommodates all the challenging, unexpected circumstances she confronts. “To me, the word ‘journey’ resonates with choosing to be on a path of acceptance but not standing still,” she said. “I’m not giving up, but recognizing that this is the path I’m on.”
Ramani Durvasula uses “journey” advisedly. A clinical psychologist in Los Angeles who treats women in emotionally abusive relationships, she recognizes how “journey” has been “eye-rollingly cheapened” and has started to experiment with alternatives. She’s tried “process.” She’s tried “healing trajectory.” But she falls back on journey, because it, more than any other word, expresses the step-by-step, sometimes circular or backward nature of enduring something hard. “Arguably, a journey doesn’t have a destination,” she said. “Have you ever taken a hike in a loop? And you end up exactly where you parked your car?”
But Durvasula does object to the easy-breezy healing so many journey hashtags promote, what she calls the “post-sobriety, post-weight-loss, now-I’m-in-love-again-after-my-toxic-relationship” reels. Too many TikToks show the crying in the car then the cute party dress, skipping over the middle, when people feel ugly, angry, self-loathing, and hopeless. “I want to see the hell,” she said. “I want to see the nightmare.”
When in 2020 a Swedish linguist named Charlotte Hommerberg studied how advanced cancer patients describe their experience, she found they used “battle” and “journey,” like everyone else. But most also used a third metaphor that conveyed not progress, fight or hope. They said cancer was like “imprisonment,” a feeling of being stuck — like a “free bird in a cage,” one person wrote. Powerless and going nowhere.

Florida Emancipation Day again recognized in Gainesville at museum in Black community
The city of Gainesville kicked off its month-long Journey to Juneteenth celebration on Saturday with a Freedom Walk to recognize and honor Emancipation in Florida.
Residents from Gainesville’s historically Black neighborhoods and vendors from organizations and businesses attended the event to celebrate Gainesville’s 4th annual “Journey to Juneteenth: Florida Emancipation to National Celebration.”
The festivities began with dozens of people walking from Depot Park to the Cotton Club Museum and Cultural Center at 837 SE Seventh Ave. to watch performances and learn more about the history of Florida’s Emancipation Day.
“We are one of the fewest cities to recognize Florida’s Emancipation Day,” said Gainesville Mayor Harvey Ward. “We believe it is important to celebrate the journey all month long. We are excited to see all of you celebrate Florida’s Emancipation Day and African American history. If you don’t know African American history, you don’t know American history.”
The month-long celebration will include a ceremony proclamation that was held at city hall Monday (May 20) that featured city of Gainesville recognizing Florida’s actual emancipation date of May 20, 1865.
That day is when enslaved Africans first learned of their freedom in Tallahassee, more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.
Adam Maxwell, an executive assistant at the Office of Equity and Inclusion for the City of Gainesville, gave remarks on behalf of the office and its employees.
“We are excited to celebrate the journey from Florida’s Emancipation Day to Juneteenth with you all,” Maxwell said. “We give honor to you [Vivian Filer] because you were the catalyst for this Florida Emancipation Day event.”
Journey to Juneteenth is a month-long program of events starting in the month of May through June 19th, the date when communities nationwide commemorate the announcement of freedom reaching Texas in 1865.
Guardian Newsletter: Protecting Black neighborhoods
Filer said she loves the support from the city and community to make the celebration a success.
“Our goal is for Florida to know more of its own history,” she said. “The city has supported it fully and I am so proud of that. This model is being copied from other cities. I am thrilled to see that people are here and want to learn more.”
Events during the celebration will include:
- Before Juneteenth: Emancipation in Florida free film screening at 7-8:30 p.m. on Monday (May 20) at the Cotton Club Museum and Cultural Center at 837 SE Seventh Ave.
- Alachua County Community Remembrance Project free exhibit honoring the victims of racial terror lynching at 1-3 p.m. on June 1 at the Alachua County Administration Building at 12 SE First St.

“I love going to cultural events,” said Cathy Norman, owner of Intuitive Designs.
Norman was one of the vendors at the Florida Emancipation Day celebration on Saturday where she sold accessories for both men and women.
“I’m such a fan of the Cotton Club Museum and what they are doing for the community,” Norman said.
Deloris Rentz, a board member and financial secretary of the museum, presided over the celebration and urged the audience to spread the knowledge to their families and friends.
“You must keep it alive,” Rentz said. “It must be our responsibility and our task to pass it on. They are trying to remove it from our schools and textbooks.”
A rare songbird’s epic journey from the edge of extinction back to the L.A. River

As visitors to a bustling park in northeast Los Angeles shot hoops, scrambled up play equipment and lounged in manicured grass, an endangered songbird covertly — but not quietly — did his part to stave off extinction.
The least Bell’s vireo, a small, mostly gray songbird, was on the verge of nesting in Rio de Los Angeles State Park, a green respite that supplanted an abandoned railyard along the L.A. River. The bird with a wingspan of just seven inches was singing passionately, an act that marked its territory as breeding season picked up in mid-March. Its song rings out like a clinking question-and-answer: “Cheedle-cheedle-chee? Cheedle-cheedle-chew!”
“It’s persistent. It’s a survivor,” said Nicolas Gonzalez, senior communications manager for migration science at the National Audubon Society, an avian conservation nonprofit, who helped identify the bird as it flitted between trees, blending into the muted spring sky.
Aggressive and impactful reporting on climate change, the environment, health and science.
Bird boosters, meanwhile, were hustling to get the grounds in order.
Evelyn “Evy” Serrano enthusiastically instructed two volunteers at Rio de Los Angeles, which is in the Glassell Park neighborhood, on how to create what looked like moats of soil around fledgling native plants. Serrano, director of the Audubon Center at Debs Park , another urban oasis, explained that the berms would funnel water to the mule fat, black sage, golden currant, sycamore trees and other native foliage the least Bell’s vireo needs to thrive. Certain plants provide cover and nest materials, while others attract yummy insects.

So far, the literal dirty work seems to be paying off. A lone least Bell’s vireo was documented at the park when the habitat restoration effort targeting the species began about two years ago, Serrano said. Within a year, there were four — two nesting pairs. Last year, they counted three fledglings.
“Sometimes it takes a really long time to see the change,” Serrano said. “It was really nice to see it happen so quickly.”
Stakeholders see the migratory birds’ rebound in the park and surrounding areas as a testament to what can happen when people come together to make positive change and natural environments are supported. It also suggests that people can live in harmony with nature — even in highly urbanized areas.
But significant legwork preceded the recent local triumph, and what can be seen as historic missteps were walked back. Meanwhile, there are new and old threats.

Once abundant in California’s riverside woodlands, the silver-tongued, whitish-bellied least Bell’s vireo vanished from most of its range by the 1980s, remaining only in Southern California and northern Baja California, according to the U.S. Geological Survey . (The birds are the smallest of four subspecies of Bell’s vireo .)
The ranks plummeted amid the extensive loss of their preferred riparian habitat. Dams went up and wetlands were drained, people encroached on wildlands, and agriculture expanded. In 1999, The Times reported that California had lost 97% of its riparian woodlands, more than any other state. Parasitism by brown-headed cowbirds , which lay eggs in vireo nests, contributed to the decline. California listed the bird as endangered in 1980, and federal officials followed suit in 1986.
About 20 years after the least Bell’s vireo gained federal protection, the California population increased almost tenfold, from 291 to 2,968 pairs, according to federal wildlife officials. Now the birds are popping up in areas where they haven’t been seen in years, sometimes even decades.
The Rio de Los Angeles park site was once part of the floodplain of the nearby Los Angeles River — prime vireo real estate. Then came the concrete. Catastrophic floods, including one in 1938 that killed more than 100 people and delayed the Oscars, prompted the waterway to be paved over.
That ushered in a period of about 60 to 70 years “where you would never have seen a least Bell’s vireo anywhere near downtown,” said Dan Cooper, deputy executive officer and senior conservation biologist for the Resource Conservation District of the Santa Monica Mountains.
A turning point arrived in the late 1990s and early 2000s, he said, when restoration work along the river began, and government agencies started clearing less habitat in the channel. Cooper, a San Gabriel Valley native, joined Friends of the L.A. River just as the nonprofit was launched by poet Lewis MacAdams .
Two years ago, Cooper was shocked to trace the birds to a pocket park lodged between the river and the roaring 5 Freeway. There was a youngster accompanying the adult making a begging call for food and attention.
“Its song is so distinctive, and it really cuts through all the din of the city noise,” Cooper said. “I could hear it above the traffic.”
On a podcast , Cooper calls it a “scratchy phrase that goes up and then goes down.” He added: “It was described to me as, ‘You take the ball, give it to me; I take the ball, give it to you.’”
The same year, Cooper said, a territory cropped up at a picnic area in Elysian Park. He said Chavez Ravine was likely once a “nice little riparian spring” replete with blackberries and other goodies.
“Once they start kind of reclaiming their prior territory, they seem to be spreading out into places we don’t necessarily expect to find them, like Elysian Park,” he said. It appears 2022 marked when the birds “sort of exploded” in the area.

Marcos Trinidad, senior director of forestry at TreePeople, remembers hearing the unmistakable tune while strolling through Rio de Los Angeles around 2015 . Trinidad, who learned the call by listening to a CD he burned featuring classical music interspersed with birdsongs, recalled thinking, “Whoa, wait, is that really happening here?”
At the time, he was director of the Audubon Center at Debs Park, and he was able to secure funding about two years later that allowed for consistent habitat restoration events.
A National Fish and Wildlife Foundation grant funds the restoration happening today, Serrano said. In addition to Audubon, the work is supported by California State Parks, Los Angeles River State Park Partners, Theodore Payne Foundation and Terremoto. Other groups, such as Friends of the L.A. River, carry out nearby restoration efforts that benefit the birds.
Rio de Los Angeles is a fairly young park; it opened in 2007 on Taylor Yard, a former Union Pacific railroad maintenance depot. Tracks still border one side of the park, and trains hurtle by in deafening bursts.
A contentious compromise between city and state officials birthed a unique park: Reconstructed wetlands lush with native flora border facilities that include a soccer field, recreation building and playground. Most visitors are unaware they’re walking their pooch or dribbling a ball yards from what has become refuge for an embattled songbird.
Those with historical knowledge of the area logged the change. An employee with L.A.’s Department of Recreation and Parks showed a Times reporter a satellite image that apparently captured the area before it was rehabbed. Trees were sparse.
“There was nothing here, and they revitalized it,” said the employee, who was working at the park.

Gray and orange fencing now rises in parts of Rio de Los Angeles State Park, barriers between nesting activity and the public. As of mid-May, two nests were confirmed. Serrano, in an email, said “our bird friend” continued to sing “a whole lot.”
Moses Goldfarb, 31, was unaware of the vireo when he arrived at the park on a sunny day in April to play tennis. The Seattle transplant, who works in the film industry, expressed surprise that the park was home to “anything other than just a standard city bird.”
Ariana Martinez, 23, who was lounging on a grassy patch, was less thrown by the revelation that the songbird was near. Since discovering the more naturalistic side of the park a few months ago, she frequents it, along with her young nephew and elderly dog.
Given all the trees and ambient bird sounds, “I feel like it makes sense for them to be here,” she said.
Candice Dickens-Russell, chief executive of Friends of the L.A. River, said nature is especially thriving in three areas of the river where those who paved it couldn’t get the concrete to stick: near Long Beach, the Sepulveda Basin and Glendale Narrows. She said it’s those places where the least Bell’s vireo and other species are making a comeback.
“There is definitely a link between a lack of concrete and biodiversity,” she said, adding that the nonprofit is advocating for strategic removal of concrete in areas of the river where it’s safe to do so.
Preserving the least Bell’s vireo, of course, goes beyond the river.

A group spanning academic, military and conservation partners is developing a model to examine all identified threats to the bird “in a kind of holistic way over space and time so we can say what are the major threats that need to be managed and where,” said Casey Lott, a consultant for the project who owns Conservation Science and Data Visualization.
Several of the birds’ largest remaining nesting habitats are on U.S. Department of Defense training areas and in U.S. Army Corps of Engineers flood control basins, and managing them in accordance with federal wildlife law is costly and disruptive to agency operations, according to an overview of the project . (In 1986, a pair of wildlife biologists penned an op-ed for The Time s pushing back on what they described as unfair “villification” of the bird after it earned federal protections, which some blamed for derailing projects.)
Lott said the birds are on the rise, estimating that there are between 4,630 and 5,125 pairs, but they haven’t established themselves in the Central Valley, once believed to be the heart of their range. According to Lott, there’s ample habitat for them there, as well as in other areas in the state, but they remain stymied by cowbirds. Meanwhile, they’re expanding in areas where cowbirds are amply trapped.
“So we can increase the population now with a whole lot of cowbird control,” Lott said. “But if the species is delisted and those efforts stop, it’s hard to imagine it not going back to dire straits.”
The model, which will take into account climate change and other emerging threats, is expected to be completed in 2026.

Lake ridge track and field: daniel ambar embarks on journey back to division iii state meet.
The junior made it to the Division III state meet a year ago in long jump, finishing eighth with a leap of 21 feet, 6 inches. He has surpassed that mark this season, including recently at the Lake Effect Conference meet on May 11 at 21-7.
The road back to the state meet has begun, and it’s off to a good start. Ambar defended his district long jump championship this past week at 20-9 1/2.
“I feel pretty good about it,” he said. “It’s just a grind up to states where you’re just trying to win.”
His winning jump was over nine inches off his mark at conference, but he isn’t concerned about it. Big goals await, and he did what he had to do at the district meet. In the past, it wouldn’t have been as easy for him to let it roll off his shoulders.
“From last season to this new season, just his growth in maturity (stands out),” Lake Ridge coach Andy Wright said. “It used to be where if he had a bad jump or a bad race, it would affect him for the rest of the meet. He’s matured now to the point where he can put that aside and still move forward. He’s much more mentally resilient.”
Ambar’s improved mindset hasn’t allowed his vision to veer off course. He has high standards, and even if a jump doesn’t live up to them, the goal is still to make it to Dayton and hit his highest mark there.
Despite there being more pressure, he is much more calm this time around than his sophomore year. In fact, it has pushed him even harder. He knows that he has more in the tank, and that is motivating him during this home stretch.
“The nervousness is definitely gone,” Ambar said. “Before, I was worried about doing this or doing that, but now I’m much more confident in what I’m able to do. I’m seeing more progression in my work in track, which is why I have a better mindset.”
His work has not only paid off in the long jump. Wright talked about Ambar’s growth mentally, but he has also grown as an athlete. It showed at the district meet, where he qualified for the regional in the 400 with a third-place finish of 52.84 seconds. He also was a part of the Royals’ 4×400 team that ran a top-four qualifying time, but they were disqualified for impeding during the race.
In front of everyone’s eyes, Ambar has grown into a household name in long jump and has expanded upon it on the track.
“It’s amazing,” Wright said. “The idea that not only are we going to be looking at him hopefully moving on to states in long jump, but there’s the possibility of what he can do in his other events because he’s really coming along. Just seeing him become a much more well-rounded athlete is a lot of fun to watch.”
There have been ups and downs, but everything that Ambar has done and improved at will be put to the test for the next two weeks. This is what it all comes down to.
When he made it to state last June, it meant a lot to him for two reasons. The first is that it was a cool opportunity to be up on the podium with that caliber of talent. The second is he thinks he has in him to do better and he wants to improve on that level.
His growth has him going in the right direction.
“It definitely fills me with determination to do it right,” Ambar said. “I definitely feel like now that it’s here, it’s time to show up. … That’s what is really getting me going and how it’s affecting me. It’s like a candle, it’s a little bit of a light for me.”
