TINA - The Tina Turner Musical on Tour

Experience the exhilarating Broadway musical that takes you on Tina Turner's trailblazing journey. The New York Times raves, "It possesses a seismic power! I've rarely heard an audience with this mighty a roar." And The Guardian cheers, "It's a celebration of triumph over adversity!"

With raw emotion in her voice and fire in her belly, Tina went from the little girl in small-town Tennessee, to the legend that ignited the globe with hits like, "What's Love Got To Do With It," "Proud Mary," "Private Dancer" and "River Deep." She made her own rules--defying the world's notions of race, age and gender. And it took blood, sweat, tears and triumphs to reach the top. A sold-out, smash hit in London, this is Tina's story, her way--brought to the stage by the Tony Award-nominated director, Phyllida Lloyd, and the history-making, Olivier Award-winning playwright of The Mountaintop, Katori Hall.

All persons entering the theatre, regardless of age, must have a ticket. Guests under 5 are not permitted in the theatre.

A memorable experience.

I really enjoyed the retelling of one of my most favorite movies. The only thing I would change would be our seats. I wanted the cast to see my family and I stand to give them a round of applause!!

Magnificent!!!

The actors, stage, writing, orchestra and overall performance were among the best I’ve ever seen. The lead actress embodied Tina. Her voice and movements pulled you into her such that you were witnessing Tina Turner. Portraying a person who only recently died has to put tremendous pressure on the actor and she met the challenge. I will watch it again when the opportunity presents itself.

Incredible story of resilience and courage in the face of violence and abuse. Wonderful choreography and music. Loved the show!

Poorly Cast

The show was well written and could have been good, however the actress who portrayed Tina (Ari Groover) wasn't very good. She tried too hard to mimic Tina making it hard to understand her words, especially when singing. Had she just sang regular and not tried to mimic Tina's cadence (which no one can do), it would have been much better. Not worth the $300 I spent for me and my mom to see the show. I hope the second actress is much better. As always the Ohio Theatre was great, one of my favorite places to watch plays.

Still the Best!

The Tina Turner Broadway show was absolutely amazing!!! What a beautiful tribute to Anna Mae, aka Tina Turner, and her legacy. The talent of the performers was incredible!!!! I am so glad I got to see this show!!!

The Best Musical of my lifetime!

Words cannot express how well done this musical was. I grew up with Tina but I went with someone that barely knew anything about her or her music. He walked out of there giving it a 10 out of 10 and I 100% agree! I was already thrilled with the show but the last 10 minutes took it to a whole another level!!! Well Done!

Simply the Best Musical I’ve ever seen!!

All I can say is “Wow!” The talent was the best I’ve ever seen!! Such a memorable experience. I highly recommend this show.

Great Show!

High energy, great performances and storyline. RIP Queen Tina!

Non stop Entertainment

The show was non stop entertainment. The fanale was just great. It had everyone on their feet. So glad that I went.

I love a good musical and this was a GREAT musical! Iam glad that Tina's early life was portrayed accurately -I am sure shocking some of the audience members! And a real life love story she was finally able to enjoy! The music was terrific, the cast so talented!! Tina's voice- and legs--were terrific. And what a future Briann Cameron (Young Anna-Mae) has. She is such a talent and I know she will have a great career. My friends and I were on a girls weekend in Columbus and SO glad we were able to attend this show. Hearing Tina's songs brought back fond memories and made us remember what a strong woman and Great talent Tina was! I would recommend this show to anyone who wants to hear a great story, hear great music and see great choreography. Kudo's to the whole cast, not 1 weak link!

NEW YORK (AP) — The national tour of Broadway's “Tina — The Tina Turner Musical” makes its California debut this week, arriving as a poignant, posthumous celebration following the rock music icon's death last month .

“Tina” opens in Los Angeles at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre on Wednesday, steps away from her Hollywood Walk of Fame star and where she recorded for Capitol Records. It plays there until July 9, followed by two weeks at Segerstrom Center the Arts in Costa Mesa and stops in San Diego, San Francisco and San Jose later this summer.

“We have always wanted to put audiences in the room with her and it’s obviously going to have even more of a special meaning now that she is gone from us physically,” says Katori Hall, co-writer of the musical.

“But her energy, her spirit, obviously has been interwoven into our creative processes. And I pray that we’ll always be able to give every audience member a little piece of Tina when they come to the show.”

Turner, who survived a horrifying marriage to triumph in middle age with such hits as “What’s Love Got to Do With It” and “Better Be Good To Me,” died last month in Küsnacht near Zurich . She was 83.

After California, the tour continues its multi-year national journey, visiting 37 more cities across North America next season. It has been touring regularly since fall 2022. There are also productions running on London’s West End, as well as in Sydney, Australia, and Stuttgart, Germany.

The musical traces the highs and lows of the two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, including her hellish marriage scarred by domestic violence and the rise as a beloved solo artist with songs like “Private Dancer,” ″River Deep, Mountain High,” "The Best” and “Proud Mary.”

“Tina” captured 12 Tony nominations, including an eventual best actress winning trophy for Adrienne Warren in the title role. Hall wrote the book with Frank Ketelaar and Kees Prins.

Two actors share the role of Turner on the road — Naomi Rodgers and Zurin Villanueva, each playing four of the eight performances a week. Also co-starring are Roderick Lawrence, Roz White, Carla R. Stewart and Lael Van Keuren.

Tour organizers realized by seeing Warren as Turner on Broadway that not just one actor could play the demanding role on the road, says Hall.

“We saw how hard it is on the body — It’s the physicality, it’s the singing, but it’s also just the emotional heft every night one has to put upon their shoulders and go through, two hours plus of the life of Tina Turner.”

Hall recalls finding out that Turner had died when she woke up with messages flooding her phone. Her mind went back to the time when Turner attended “Tina” on Broadway.

“When she walked through the door, to see people get on their feet and give her a standing ovation, I was so grateful that she was able to feel that energy and feel that love on the American side of the pond before she passed,” says Hall.

“I think it was just a beautiful gift that we were able to give her in that moment and to be in the room breathing with her and witnessing that love just showering down from the balcony.”

South Africans are voting in an election seen as their country's most important in 30 years, and one that could put them in unknown territory in the short history of their democracy, the three-decade dominance of the African National Congress party being the target of a new generation of discontent in a country of 62 million people — half of whom are estimated to be living in poverty. The Tina Turner Musical is simply the best. The theatre show launched in London's West End five years ago at the iconic Aldwych Theatre and it's just had its run extended into summer 2025, making it the longest-running show in the theatre's history.

We've featured the theatre production in our guide to the best West End shows , and one of our Digital Writers was lucky enough to experience the musical for herself: "In the sometimes crowded world of bio-musicals, this one stands out. I learnt so much about Tina's story that I didn't know before, and I was blown away by the vocal talent of the performers."

However, there is just one teeny tiny issue with The Tina Turner Musical — it's exclusively performed in London in the UK! That is, until, spring 2025.

The critically acclaimed musical, written by Olivier Award-winning playwright Katori Hall and directed by Phyllida Lloyd, is set to tour the UK and Ireland next spring. The Tina Turner Musical, which includes a can't-help-but-dance soundtrack featuring songs such as Proud Mary and What’s Love Got to Do with It?, will begin the tour in Leicester, before visiting cities like Belfast, Dublin and Liverpool, and ending in Milton Keynes in 2026.

This isn't the first tour The Tina Turner Musical has embarked on; the jukebox musical has toured North America, Germany, Spain, The Netherlands, Australia, and has performed on Broadway, too.

What is the story of Tina: The Musical?

The Tina Turner Musical follows the life of Anna Mae Bullock from her early life in Nutbush, Tennessee to her transformation into Tina Turner, the Queen of Rock 'n' Roll. The award-winning musical explores how Turner defied the bounds of her age, gender and race to become a 12-time Grammy Award winner and one of the best-selling artists in the world.

When asked about the play, Turner had said: "It's really important to me to have the chance to share my full story. This musical is not about my stardom. It is about the journey I took to get there. Each night I want audiences to take away from the theatre that you can turn poison into medicine."

Will The Tina Turner Musical tour the UK?

It's simply the best news you'll hear all day: The Tina Turner Musical is touring the UK and Ireland in 2025 and into 2026. While further dates and casting are yet to be announced, here is the full list of UK dates that you can currently purchase:

NEW YORK (AP) — The national tour of Broadway’s “Tina — The Tina Turner Musical” makes its California debut this week, arriving as a poignant, posthumous celebration following the rock music icon’s death last month .

She was 83.

The music group ABBA with Björn Ulvaeus, Anni-Frid Lyngstad, Agnetha Fältskog and Benny Andersson will receive the Royal Vasa Order from Sweden's King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia at a ceremony at Stockholm Royal Palace on May 31 for outstanding contributions to Swedish and international music life. After California, the tour continues its multi-year national journey, visiting 37 more cities across North America next season. It has been touring regularly since fall 2022. There are also productions running on London’s West End, as well as in Sydney, Australia, and Stuttgart, Germany.

The musical traces the highs and lows of the two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, including her hellish marriage scarred by domestic violence and the rise as a beloved solo artist with songs like “Private Dancer,” ″River Deep, Mountain High,” “The Best” and “Proud Mary.”

Revisiting ‘Private Dancer’ At 40: How Tina Turner’s Liberation Album Remains A Musical Salvation

Released in May 1984, ‘Private Dancer’ was a musical tour de force. The record saw Tina Turner shed her assured vocal talents, exposing some fragility while adding in some sultriness too, to share a powerful tale of finally finding liberation.

“How it all came about was a miracle,” says Terry Britten , the co-writer and producer of Tina Turner ’s “ What’s Love Got To Do With It .”

The enduring single on Turner's 1984 album Private Dancer , released 40 years ago this month, was the songstress' ultimate emancipating act. It liberated her from the strictures of a music career bound to former husband Ike Turner , and debuted a new, self-possessed persona that highlighted her own rich talents as a solo artist. Decades on, the album remains a searing testament to resilience and the power of raw, honest expression.

Private Dancer , her fifth solo outing, was the beginning of Turner's renaissance and next era. Still, some of its most powerful songs — including “What’s Love” — almost didn’t make the cut. In fact, the song’s woeful quality and halted vocals proved an obstacle for Turner.

“After all this time, I’ve realized what the problem was and why she didn’t like it: because she was so damn vulnerable in it,” Britten tells GRAMMY.com. “She’d never been that vulnerable before in a song.”

Turner had long wrestled with her public image and allowing listeners into her inner world. Despite her success in the '70s and the subsequent 1976 breakdown of her abusive marriage to Ike (which left her penniless), followed by less successful Las Vegas revue shows, Turner was wary of conceding defeat.

Her career revival was largely born after Turner had made a cameo appearance in 1982 on the synth-inspired remake of The Temptations ' “ Ball of Confusion .” Masterminded by pop band Heaven 17’s Martyn Ware, the song netted Turner a singles deal with Capitol Records. Her next pairing with Ware, a remake of Al Green ’s “ Let’s Stay Together ,” was a runaway success, charting at number six in the UK and No. 26 on the Billboard Hot 100, in late 1983 and early 1984 respectively.

Chart success had eluded Turner for years, so by February 1984 Capitol quickly demanded a full album — with two weeks to deliver it. With Turner already on tour in the UK then, her manager, Roger Davies , raced around London seeking potential tracks. Davies had been old friends with Britten back in Australia, and reached out about available songs.

Co-written with Graham Lyle , Britten's "What’s Love” had been skipped over by British rock singer Cliff Richard. Its rumination on sexual over romantic desire awaited a new voice.

Turner's powerhouse vocals gave the track the justice it so called for. Just as her vocal prowess was put on display, "What's Love" also underscored Turner's ability to bring both fragility and sultriness to a song. The combination would soon propel Turner to worldwide domination.

In the studio, Britten leaned on Turner’s dancing background to make the meditative ballad work. Turner struggled with the song’s languid rhythm, so Britten suggested she jog on the spot. “We jogged at the mic,” he says. “Soon enough, she got it!”

Britten believes “What’s Love” showed Turner, for the first time, how empowering vulnerability could be. “She realized she could act out these songs,” he reflects. “The whole direction of her career changed in that moment.”

Released in May 1984, “What’s Love” slowly scaled the charts, competing for prime position with the likes of Prince ’s “ When Doves Cry ” and Lionel Ritchie ’s “ Stuck on You .” “What’s Love” ultimately landed at No. 1 in August 1984 — staying there for three weeks — and fast-tracked Turner’s forceful musical renaissance.

The arrival of Private Dancer only galvanized the transformation.

The album was a mixture of old and new, figuratively stitching together a reinvigorated yet still rock ’n’ roll Turner. There were completely new tracks and sounds, like the synth-infused “What’s Love” and spunky, pulsating “Show Some Respect” (another Britten number). Covers of the Beatles ’ “ Help! ” and David Bowie ’s “ 1984 ,” meanwhile, were reimagined with searching gospel energy and symphonic orchestral strings.

There was an emphasis on storytelling across Private Dancer , with lyrical explorations of respect, love, and desire, paired with Turner’s frayed timbre. “ I Might Have Been Queen ” was penned by Jeannette Obstoj and Rupert Hine in response to hearing Turner’s life story. From a youth picking cotton in Tennessee to her years as a double act with Ike, Obstoj took Turner’s trying life (and lifelong interest in Ancient Egypt) to craft an earthy narrative textured by stories of grief and self-understanding. The stomping funk result was an anthemic tribute, celebrating Turner as she sang proudly of being a “sole survivor.”

Allowed into Turner’s inner sanctum, listeners could better understand and relate to the singer’s past life — whether these were real stories or imagined tales. Songs like “Private Dancer,” seemingly about a dancer who keeps a firm psychological distance from her job as a means of self-protection, couldn’t help but be tied back to Turner’s former life as the mistreated singing partner to Ike. Turner’s coarse vocals — retelling regret with the ballad “ Better Be Good to Me ,” or celebrating self-confidence on “Show Some Respect” — underscored her toughness as she sang about respect and recognition.

Tina Turner’s emotional depth and lyrical confessions resonated with critics and listeners, affirming Turner as sensitive, soulful and, above all, an iconic solo artist. The success of the record at the 1985 GRAMMYs only affirmed Turner's status.

Britten, who won two gramophones for his work and joined Turner on stage to collect the GRAMMY for Record Of The Year, said that the audience — there and even at home watching — manifested her three wins that night. “In between introductions, you could hear the whole crowd going, ‘Tina! Tina! Tina!’” he says. “It was like the whole auditorium wanted her to win. In fact, they willed her to win.”

The entire musical project was a frenzied worldwide phenomenon: the confident comeback story of a 45-year-old liberated woman. Private Dancer represents a rare redemption for a female artist over 40 — a script contemporaries have taken cues from.

Madonna enjoyed a return serve with her revealing 1998 spiritual album Ray of Light , a record that saw her achieve renewed commercial success — and perhaps most important to her, critical acclaim. After the abject failure of 2001’s Glitter , Mariah Carey stormed the charts (and GRAMMYs) in 2005 with her confessional but defiant album, The Emancipation of Mimi . Janet Jackson , no longer suffering public shame after the infamous Superbowl incident and finally free to release music under her own label, returned revealing a more mature, reflective artist with 2015’s Unbreakable . Each album privileged some aspect of self-exposure and sonic difference to mount a comeback where audiences were invited in.

Publicly sharing some vulnerability while also celebrating fortitude, continues to enliven the story of Private Dancer — and the listening experience decades on. After Tina Turner's death in 2023, critics reappraised the record and the seismic impact of “What’s Love.” Some said the song was an enduring “call to action” on finding independence, while others concluded that Private Dancer alone “lifted [Turner] into the pop stratosphere.”

The record represents one of history’s greatest musical comebacks. Its emotional depth, paired with a tough if sometimes frayed sound, gave listeners a deeply resonant tale about overcoming.

“She gave me such trust,” Britten says of recording with Turner. “I can’t tell you what a moving experience it was.” With Private Dancer , Turner entrusted listeners with her own vulnerable admissions, many of which continue to resonate and inspire today.

GRAMMY Rewind: Watch Tina Turner Win Her First Solo GRAMMY In 1985 For "What's Love Got To Do With It?"

Relive the moment Tina Turner won a golden gramophone for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female — an opportunity she had been waiting for "for such a long time."

During her remarkable 83 years of life, the late Tina Turner received eight GRAMMY awards, a GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award, and three introductions into the GRAMMY Hall of Fame.

In this episode of GRAMMY Rewind , we travel to 1985, when Turner won a golden gramophone for one of her many iconic hits, "What's Love Got to Do with It?," in the Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female, category.

"I've been waiting for this opportunity for such a long time," she said in her acceptance speech. "I have to thank many people. And all of you that I don't get to thank, you must know that it's in my mind."

Among those "many people," Turner praised Graham Lyle and Terry Britten , who wrote the track; John Carter, her A&R "who played a wonderful part" in relaunching her career with Capitol Records in the '80s; and Roger Davies , her manager, "a great man who has done a great job with her career."

Later that night, "What's Love Got To Do With It?" helped Turner win Record Of The Year; she also took home Best Rock Vocal Performance, Female, for "Better Be Good to Me." Though the 1985 ceremony marked Turner's first solo awards, she first won a GRAMMY in 1972 alongside her ex-husband, Ike Turner , for their recording of "Proud Mary."

10 Fascinating Facts About Bryan Adams: From Writing For KISS To His Serious Side Hustle

The GRAMMY-winning singer and guitarist has sold over 75 million albums and is about to share his songs on the world stage. Ahead of his So Happy It Hurts tour, read on for 10 lesser-known facts about the raspy-voiced rocker.

One of Canada's biggest rock stars, Bryan Adams has had a massively successful and sonically diverse career that spans 45 years. With one win and 16 GRAMMY nominations under his belt, Adams' prolific output includes numerous chart-topping albums and big-name collaborations.

Yet, for a man who has sold over 75 million albums and wants his music to appeal to as wide an audience as possible, Bryan Adams doesn't seem to seek the limelight.

He’s not tabloid fodder, doesn’t date celebrities, and does not court controversy. While he certainly will promote his latest album or tour — and will begin his international tour on Jan. 20 in Montana —  but Adams is an intensely private individual who is selective with the interviews that he gives and in what he speaks about. He is also not a flamboyantly dressed performer, preferring the jeans and t-shirt that he has carried over from his very beginnings. Appropriately enough, he often calls his band the Dudes Of Leisure.

Adams’ most recent studio album is called So Happy It Hurts and recently released a 3-CD box set of live recordings of three classic albums performed at London’s Royal Albert Hall: Cuts Like A Knife, Into The Fire, and Waking Up The Neighbors .

Ahead of his So Happy It Hurts Tour — which will certainly see Adams perform hits "Summer Of ‘69," "(Everything I Do) I Do It For You," "Can’t Stop This Thing We Started" — read on for 10 lesser-known facts about the raspy-voiced rocker.

who has befriended and collaborated with an impressive range of artists across numerous media.

He Signed His First Contract For $1

Back in 1978, when was just 18 years old, Adams signed a recording contract with A&M Records who decided to take a chance on the fledgling rocker with a "wait and see" attitude.

They signed him for the paltry sum of $1 which Adams insisted on receiving so he could frame it.

While his first two albums, Bryan Adams (1980) and You Want It You Got It (1981) didn’t exactly set the world on fire, his third release Cuts Like A Knife (1983) went platinum in America and triple platinum in his native Canada, selling at least 1.5 million copies worldwide. Seems like A&M got a great return on their investment.

His Breakthrough Hit Was Written For Someone Else

In January 1983, producer Bruce Fairbairn asked Adams and songwriting partner Jim Vallance  to come up with a song for Blue Öyster Cult. Their original version of "Run To You" did not impress the band (or Adams) and they passed — so did .38 Special and other groups.

When Adams needed one more song for 1984’s Reckless , he pulled out "Run" and taught it to his band. This time, everyone including album producer Bob Clearmountain was impressed. It became the album's lead single and Adams' biggest hit, peaking at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.

Although the previous Cuts Like A Knife had three hits singles and went platinum, Reckless spawned six hits ("Heaven" went No. 1) and turned Adams into a superstar, selling 5 million copies in America and reportedly 7 million more globally.

He’s Penned Dozens Of Songs For Others

Adams has co-written songs for numerous other artists, many of them hard rockers. In 1982, he and Vallance co-wrote "Rock and Roll Hell" and "War Machine" with Gene Simmons for the KISS album Creatures Of The Night; and he worked with Paul Stanley and Mikel Japp on "Down On Your Knees" for KISS Killers .

That led to credits on albums by Ted Nugent, Motley Crue and Krokus (who used a leftover from Reckless ). But the recipients of Adams’ songs span a wide range of artists including Neil Diamond , Tina Turner , Bonnie Raitt , Loverboy, .38 Special, and Anne Murray .

He Loves A Good Duet

Bryan Adams' duets often appear on movie soundtracks and tend to do well. His Reckless collaboration with Tina Turner, "It’s Only Love," was a Top 20 hit, peaking at No. 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. But things got bigger from there.

"All For Love," his song with Sting and Rod Stewart for the Three Musketeers film soundtrack (1993) went No. 1 in at least a dozen countries, selling nearly 2 million copies globally. He’s also duetted with Bonnie Raitt ("Rock Steady"), Barbra Streisand ("I Finally Found Someone" which went Top 10), and Melanie C from Spice Girls ("When You’re Gone"). He’s also recorded with Chicane, Pamela Anderson, Emmanuelle Seigner, Loverush UK, and Michael Bublé .

In recent years, Adams has said that he would like to duet with Beyonce and Lady Gaga . And in case you missed it, Taylor Swift once brought him onstage to perform "Summer Of ‘69."

The Reckless Video Album Is A Story Of Unrequited Love

With its six videos slightly out of order from actual release, the Reckless video compilation (1984) charts a melancholy story. In "This Time" (the final video from Cuts Like A Knife ), Adams is seeking out a woman in a desert town who's only shown with glimpses of her legs and heels. At the end, he finds her in the back of his van and they hook up — or is it just a mirage?

"Summer Of ‘69" intercuts black and white footage of Adams and a young woman during their teen years with color images of their separate lives today. At the end, his old flame drives by with her current boyfriend who sees her eyeing the rocker, gets angry, and violently stops the car. In "Somebody," she escapes the car as he screams at her, and then she and Adams wander in different locations as they recollect one another.

In "Kids Wanna Rock," Adams jumps onstage for a high energy performance, while in "Heaven," his old flame’s new guy has been pulled over for drunk driving, so she ditches him to see the Bryan Adams show conveniently happening across the street. He is unaware she is there, mesmerized by him.

After he races off the stage he finds himself locked inside the venue with snow coming down outside. In "Run To You," actually the album’s first single, Adams performs in wind and snow-swept environs and fantasizes about the same woman who finally walks up to him at the end. But they never embrace or kiss.

He’s An Acclaimed Photographer

Adams has been taking photos for most of his life, but it’s no longer a hobby. — he has photographed everyone from rock stars to royalty, and even himself for his own album covers. He got a lot of good pointers about photography and darkroom work when the famed Anton Corbijn shot the cover for 1987’s Into The Fire .

While Adams’ memorable portraits of people like Pink , Mick Jagger , Amy Winehouse , Rammstein , and yes, Queen Elizabeth II, he has also published books of portraits of homeless people, wounded war veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan, images of sand from the Island Of Mustique, and American women dressed in Calvin Klein. He uses proceeds from these books to benefit various charitable causes. He also shot the 2022 calendar for the Pirelli Tire Company to help them celebrate their 150th anniversary.

These days, Adams told Louder Sound that he is "a photographer moonlighting as a singer ."

He’s A Longtime Vegan & Animal Rights Advocate

The singer first became vegetarian at age 28 and later turned vegan, citing animal cruelty in the face of human food consumption. Adams has said that he gets an abundance of energy from his plant-based diet, noting he no longer gets sick.

Adams has promoted his lifestyle to fans through positive posts, and he joins other famous musicians who are also vegan including Paul McCartney , Billie Eilish , and Stevie Wonder .

He Is Staunchly Committed To Humanitarian & Charitable Causes

Adams has lent his voice and face to a variety of causes. It all started with his appearance at the Live Aid Festival in 1985, which raised many for Ethiopian famine relief. That was followed by the two-week Amnesty International A Conspiracy of Hope tour in 1986, the 1988 Peace Concert in East Berlin, and many others. From earthquake and tsunami relief to climate change to the Mideast peace process, he has been involved in many causes, and he is an LGBTQ ally as well.

In 2006, he co-founded the Bryan Adams Foundation with the goal of improving quality of life around the world via financial grants. Funds "support specific projects that are committed to bettering the lives of other people. The Foundation seeks to protect the most vulnerable or disadvantaged individuals in society." A big goal is "to advance education and learning opportunities for children and young people worldwide."

He Co-Wrote A Broadway Musical

Adams is known for having hit songs from movies including Don Juan DeMarco, The Three Musketeers, The Mirror Has Two Faces, and Robin Hood, Prince Of Thieves . Some people might not know that he and Jim Vallance co-wrote the score to the Broadway adaptation of "Pretty Woman," which ran for 420 performances over a year starting in August 2018. It is currently touring the UK and U.S.

None of the movie’s pop songs were used; the score was entirely theirs. And it turns out he and Vallance had to audition their work to producers. Adams told Billboard in 2016 that the duo crafted three songs and presented them to the producers, who responded with a "don’t call us, we’ll call you" approach. Thirty minutes later, Adams got the call.

He Tours Places Other Western Artists Don't Visit

Bryan Adams has performed in places other Western artists don't often visit. He has toured India several times; Adams first played Mumbai in the early ‘90s and was impressed with the loyalty of Indian audiences. He was reportedly the first Western artist to play Karachi, Pakistan after the Sept. 11 attacks, and toured in Syria and Lebanon in December 2010. He said Syria had a great audience and had never hosted a Western artist before.

"Her hair all flying and her big man-eater teeth flashing. She ate us all for breakfast": Remembering the Queen Of Rock’N’Roll, Tina Turner

Tina Turner: November 26, 1939 – May 24, 2023

Tina Turner studio portrait

Tina Turner defined the role of the female rock star and took it to stratospheric heights. Blessed with a strong, soulful singing voice and phenomenal reserves of energy, she was a performer with a smart, sophisticated sheen underpinned by raw, animal magnetism. Her 1984 album Private Dancer sold more than 12 million copies worldwide – a tally matched by only two other albums released by women up to that point ( Like A Virgin by Madonna and She’s So Unusual by Cyndi Lauper).

Turner’s show at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro in January 1988 in front of 180,000 fans earned her a place in the Guinness Book Of World Records for the largest audience ever assembled (at the time) by any performer, male or female, for a ticketed musical event. Turner was then 48 and close to the peak of her powers: a star of MTV, a member of the Live Aid rock aristocracy, a global stadium-rock phenomenon, and a household name. She was simply the biggest, as well as the best.

When I met her in London in June 1987, she had acquired an appropriate grandeur but was nevertheless a somewhat nervous and tightly strung object of scrutiny as she navigated her way through an afternoon of interviews with various international journalists, ending with an appearance on Terry Wogan’s show at BBC Television Centre. Smaller than you would think (5'4") and immaculately dressed in a simple but stunning skirt and top, she spoke quietly but firmly.

Her autobiography, I, Tina , written with Kurt Loder and published the year before, was by then an international best-seller. The book had lifted the lid on the years of physical and emotional abuse she had suffered at the hands of her former husband and musical collaborator Ike Turner. Her status as a fully qualified survivor had turned her into a symbol of female empowerment. Not only had she broken free of her tormentor, but she had also gone on, loudly and proudly, to eclipse in her own right all of her past achievements with Ike.

But her newly forged credentials as a feminist icon had not affected her style as one of the most instinctively sexy performers ever to embark on a career in showbusiness. Her long legs, short/slit skirts, plunging necklines and surreal bouffants enhanced an air of hyper-sexuality that she affected to be blithely unaware of.

“Now listen to me very carefully,” she told me in a low, steady voice that left little room for further discussion. “I have nothing to do with the labels people put on me. I was never promoting any cause. I was living my life. As for those dresses, I wore them then, I wear them now, because they’re practical for the work I do and the way I’m built; they’re just my style. They’re nothing to do with anything that I thought or did. I’m not for any ‘movement’. I don’t want that responsibility. I’m just living my life.”

And what a life it was. She was born Anna Mae Bullock in Nutbush, near Brownsville, Tennessee, the location immortalised in the 1973 hit Nutbush City Limits – one of the comparatively few songs that she wrote herself. ‘ Church house, gin house, school house, outhouse… You go to store on Fridays, you go to church on Sundays .’ Her father was a sharecropper, and as a little girl she picked cotton and sang in the choir of her local Baptist church. When she was 11, her mother ran off to St Louis, Missouri to escape her husband’s abusive behaviour. Little Ann, as she was known, and her elder sister Alline eventually followed their mother to St Louis, where the two sisters would frequent the local R&B clubs.

Little Ann was 17 in 1957 when she first saw Ike Turner on stage at the Club Manhattan with his band the Kings Of Rhythm. He was 26 and already an established figure in the music business; a guitarist, pianist, songwriter, producer and the man behind Jackie Brenston’s 1951 single Rocket 88 , which is often referred to as “the first rock’n’roll record”. She became a regular at Ike’s shows and dreamed of being a singer with his band. One night, during the intermission, she grabbed the microphone and started singing BB King ’s You Know I Love You . Ike (and the audience) was suitably impressed, and her moment of bravado marked the beginning of a long and explosive partnership.

Ike changed Little Ann’s name to Tina – inspired by the popular TV series S heena, Queen Of The Jungle – and encouraged her to develop a wild, uninhibited stage personality similar to that of the cartoon character. In 1960 they released their first single as Ike & Tina Turner, the gospel-tinged R&B song A Fool In Love , which found Tina testifying: ‘ I trust the man and all that he do ’ (it was Ike’s lyric).

The song was a substantial hit on the R&B chart, and became one of the first records to cross over into the mainstream US pop chart, where it reached No.27. A string of hits followed including Its Gonna Work Out Fine, Poor Fool and others, prompting Ike to re-brand his live show as the Ike& Tina Turner Revue and, with a trio of female backing singers/dancers known as the Ikettes, to embark on a never-ending schedule of touring and recording.

Tina was already the mother of Ike’s son Ronnie (b.1960), and the mother of another son Craig (b.1958) by the Kings Of Rhythm saxophonist Raymond Hill when in 1962 Ike and Tina were married in a registry office in Tijuana. Love did not have a lot to do with it. After the papers were signed, Ike took his new wife to a brothel where the floor show was “more gynaecological than erotic” as a mortified Tina described it in her 2018 memoir My Love Story .

There is some amazing footage from this early period now available on YouTube and elsewhere of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue performing on stage and in TV studios in America. But very little if any of it reached UK TV screens at the time. One memorable introduction to Tina’s unique performing style was through the evocative writing of Nik Cohn, whose account of a show in London stood out among the many brilliant pieces in his epochal 1969 book Awopbopaloobop Alopbamboom :

“She’s a great big woman with long black hair right down her back and a beautiful snarling animal face and a truly cosmic arse. Not pretty but sexual as hell. All this time, Ike Turner, her husband, plays guitar behind her and looks mean, a neat little man with a goatee and sad cynical eyes. I was standing right under the stage.

"So, Tina started whirling and pounding and screaming, melting by the minute, and suddenly she came thundering down on me like an avalanche, backside first, all that flesh shaking and leaping in my face. And I reared back in self-defence, all the front rows did, and then someone fell over and we all immediately collapsed in a heap, struggling and cursing, thrashing about like fish in a bucket.

"When I looked back up again, Tina was still shaking above us, her butt was still exploding, and she looked down on us in triumph. So sassy, so smug and evil. She’d used her arse as a bowling ball, us as skittles, and she’d scored a strike. Smart woman: her flesh dissolving and her hair all flying and her big man-eater teeth flashing. She ate us all for breakfast.”

But along with the sensuality and physicality of her performing style there was another, more technical, side to Tina’s singing abilities which was revealed by Phil Spector when he co-wrote and produced the landmark 1966 hit River Deep Mountain High . Although Ike Turner was credited on the record, Spector, who was a similarly unhinged control freak, had ensured that Ike had no involvement in the making of it.

Musing on the song years later, Tina said: “I didn’t know it at the time because I couldn’t see into the future, but I came out of that collaboration transformed, with a taste of independence, an unaccustomed sense of self-worth, and an audience in Europe, where they embraced the song that America didn’t know how to appreciate. After that song, a line was drawn… I knew better, and I wanted more.”

Following the No.3 chart success in the UK of River Deep Mountain High , the Ike & Tina Turner Revue made their first visit to Britain where they opened for the Rolling Stones on their tour of 1966. It was the start of a long and fruitful relationship between Tina and the Stones, and particularly between Tina and Mick Jagger . The Stones hired Ike & Tina again to open their 1969 tour of America, and footage of Tina giving a spectacularly lascivious performance of I’ve Been Loving You Too Long was included in Gimme Shelter , the 1970 documentary directed by Albert and David Maysles which chronicled the tour that ended with the disastrous events at the Altamont free festival.

It’s often said that Turner taught Jagger to dance. “That’s not true,” she told me in her emphatic way. “Inspired him, perhaps. He would stand at the corners of the stage and watch us. And in the same way that you take certain ideas that help you to write songs, you take certain things that help you to create your performing style. I may have shown him how to do the pony steps that we used in our routines. But not teaching him. His mother taught him to dance. I met his mother and that’s what she told me. Mick and I we’re performers, not dancers. We just do street dance steps.”

The 1970s brought more hits. Their extraordinary version of the Creedence Clearwater Revival song Proud Mary , which began sotto voce and then exploded into a frenetic, rock’n’roll free-for-all, became a million-selling hit in 1971, landing them firmly in the top five of the US pop chart for the first time. Nutbush City Limits was a top-five hit in the UK and a big smash throughout Europe in 1973. It was to be their last big hit as a duo.

Tina’s memorable performance in the role of the Acid Queen in Ken Russell’s 1975 film Tommy , based on The Who ’s rock opera, gave her a taste for acting and, perhaps more significantly, another taste of what it was like to work and live independently of Ike. By the mid-70s Ike had become heavily addicted to cocaine, which brought out the worst of an already deeply flawed personality. He would beat Tina before and after their “lovemaking” sessions, and “punish” her for the most minor transgressions by burning her with scalding coffee and cigarettes.

Tina, by contrast, had found solace by becoming a Buddhist and immersing herself in a daily routine of chanting and meditation which brought her calmness and an inner strength. She later wrote the book Happiness Becomes You (published in 2020) which outlines how she applied her Buddhist principles to overcome the many personal and professional challenges she faced throughout her life.

She needed every ounce of resolve at her disposal after events came to a head in July 1976. During a car journey from Dallas airport to the Statler Hilton, Ike set about her with his fists and a shoe. “By the time we reached the hotel, my face was swollen and my once-beautiful suit was splattered with blood,” Tina recalled in her memoir. “We attracted a lot of attention when we stepped out of the car, although Ike claimed we had been in an ‘accident’. I looked like a woman who had been broken and silenced.”

Tina waited until Ike had fallen asleep in their hotel room before gathering a few toiletries into a case and slipping out of the hotel via the kitchen and into a back alley. In a state of panic and confusion she ran across a busy interstate highway and up an embankment to a Ramada hotel where, battered, bloodied and with just 36 cents in her pocket, she presented herself to the manager and asked for sanctuary.

There followed a stretch in the wilderness during which Tina fought to re-establish her career as a performer in her own right and to make a life for herself without Ike. At the age of 37 she was dependent on friends for a place to live. “While my hosts were out, or at work, I scrubbed their homes from top to bottom, organised their closets, and got rid of their junk and trash,” she recalled. “Better to be someone else’s maid than Ike Turner’s wife was my attitude.”

Her divorce from Ike was finalised in 1978. She took no money or property from the settlement; her sole “demand” was the right to continue using her name (which Ike had trademarked). For a while Tina earned money from guest appearances on TV chat shows ( Hollywood Squares, Donny & Marie, The Sonny & Cher Show ) and playing on the cabaret/Las Vegas circuit. She released a couple of solo albums, Rough (1978) and Love Explosion (1979), neither of which sold well, after which she was dropped by her label United Artists

She was beginning to look like a hasbeen, but never lost faith in her own ability or ambition. She approached a young Australian promoter called Roger Davies to become her manager in 1980, and with his help and guidance Tina began to re-fashion both herself and her music to appeal to a new, much broader audience.

Her rock friends rallied round. In 1981 Rod Stewart invited her to tour with him and she performed Hot Legs with him on the influential US TV show Saturday Night Live . And the Stones once again added her to the bill for dates on their American Tour to promote Tattoo You (the highest grossing tour of 1981). In 1982 she recorded a version of The Temptations’ hit Ball Of Confusion for BEF, an offshoot of the UK group Heaven 17, and made a video which was shown to good responses on the new video channel MTV.

In 1983 when she was trying to negotiate a recording contract with Capitol, David Bowie helpfully told executives at the label that Tina Turner was his favourite singer. He showed up at her showcase gig at The Ritz in New York with Keith Richards and other celebrities who later partied the night away with Tina – an event which she subsequently described as a “Cinderella” moment which “changed my life dramatically”.

The initial breakthrough as a solo star came with a version of Al Green’s Let’s Stay Together produced with a modern, stylish touch by Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh of Heaven 17. A surprise hit on both sides of the Atlantic, it paved the way for the album Private Dancer and its accompanying single What’s Love Got To Do With It , both released in May 1984. With its title track, written by Mark Knopfler, and other songs by bespoke pop songwriters such as Terry Britten and Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn, there was no doubt that Tina had been guided in her choice of material by Roger Davies.

“There was a lot of the music on Private Dancer which she didn’t really like, to be honest, and she’ll tell you that herself,” Davies told Charles Shaar Murray in 1988. “But I said: ‘That’s the direction we have to go in. I know you want to do an AC/DC album, but we’re not ready for that yet.’ If Tina had a choice, she’d do a real hard rock, heavy metal album. I don’t mean bang-your-headagainst-the-wall stuff, but real good, pumping stuff like early AC/DC.”

Her rock credentials were bolstered by a duet with Bryan Adams on his song It’s Only Love . Adams joined her on stage during the Private Dancer tour, and there is a memorable video of the pair performing in Birmingham in 1985. The chemistry is off the scale as the two of them romp through the song, their rasping vocals set against the soaring, swooping interplay between the two fine guitarists in Turner’s touring band, James Ralston and Jamie West-Oram. There is a classic moment when Turner steadies Adams’s vocal mic in a way that is somehow both lewd and motherly.

“Looking sexy on stage was never my primary goal, and I didn’t worry about how guys would react to my look,” Turner said. “I always played to the women in the audience, because if you’ve got the girls on your side, you’ve got the guys. I wanted the women to like me, so I set out to convince them that I was just having fun, not trying to steal their men.”

But if looking sexy was not her primary goal, she was not shy about doing what it took to grab the attention of her male fans. In 1985 she took a starring role in the Live Aid show singing State Of Shock and It’s Only Rock ’N Roll with her long-time admirer Mick Jagger, who ended a performance of supercharged sexual energy by rather ungallantly ripping her skirt off. In the same year, Turner took on the role of Aunty Entity in Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome.

“That was the greatest costume I ever had on my body,” she said. “It was cutting me up, but I thought: ‘I don’t care. I’ll bleed. I’ll die. I love where I am. I love every minute of it. This is where I need to be.’” The soundtrack provided another enduring hit with We Don’t Need Another Hero .

Having established herself as a solo star, and with her destiny now grasped firmly in her own hands, there were no further missteps on the road ahead. A succession of multimillion-selling albums ensued – Break Every Rule (1986), Foreign Affair (1989), What’s Love Got To Do With It (1993), Wildest Dreams (1996) and Twenty Four Seven (1999) – each accompanied by increasingly extravagant tours of the world’s biggest venues.

By the time she went out on her Twenty Four Seven Tour, at the age of 60, Turner was a certified megastar. Striding across a vast stadium stage set designed by Mark Fisher (Rolling Stones designer), she wended her way through a futuristic, multi-level vision of cantilevered walkways and chrome archways that exploded into life with shooting pyrotechnic displays. And every night as she sang Nutbush City Limits she would be hoisted into the air and swung above the heads of the audience on the end of an enormous crane arm.

In 2013, Turner married former record label executive Erwin Bach, her boyfriend of 27 years, and was getting ready to settle into a well-earned retirement, when she suffered a devastating succession of health problems: a stroke, intestinal cancer and kidney failure, the latter requiring a transplanted organ, which was donated by Bach.

She came through it all strong enough to attend the opening of Tina: The Tina Turner Musical at the Aldwych in London in April 2018. Watching her life story unfold in front of her eyes, Turner thought about “the long road I travelled from Nutbush to this theatre in London – all that I went through, from the beginning of Little Anna Mae, all the way to here. And I thought: ‘I am blessed.’”

Russell Simmons on Living in Bali Amid Lawsuits: 'Never Had Any Reason to Feel Unsafe in America'

In an interview with 'AllHipHop,' Simmons denied hiding out in Bali after being accused of sexual misconduct by multiple women.

Russell Simmons has lived in Bali since 2018, but he swears that the relocation doesn't mean he's been hiding out from allegations of rape and sexual misconduct.

The Def Jam Recordings founder issued a statement to AllHipHop , posted on Friday (May 24), in which he insisted that rumors of him being unable to freely return to the United States are "false."

"People saying that I somehow can’t come home when I’m there all the time wears on you,” Simmons told the outlet. "It wears on me after a while to keep hearing the same narrative, which is false. I’m always in L.A., I’m always in New York and Miami. And I’ve never had any reason to feel unsafe in America."

Also sharing that he doesn't intend to live in New York again, Simmons acknowledged that he previously lived in California for nine years and currently pays non-resident state taxes.

“I am not physically present in New York and I do not have an intention to live in New York in the future,” Simmons stated in a declaration filing issued Wednesday (May 22).

"I own no property in the United States. I have been living in Bali since 2018, which is where I intend to remain," the statement continued. "For at least nine years before I moved to Bali, I lived in California. As a California resident, I paid California resident taxes in the years immediately prior to moving to Bali. Currently, I pay California non-resident state taxes."

As multiple women have accused Simmons of sexual assault and harassment, the Queens native has vehemently denied the allegations, although music executive Drew Dixon has in the past alleged that Simmons raped her 1995. She tackled the alleged incident in 2020's HBO documentary On the Record , also suing Simmons for defamation in February, a suit Simmons has sought to be dismissed.

Tina Turner , the queen of rock’n’roll behind hits such as “What’s Love Got to Do with It”, has died aged 83.

In a statement shared on Wednesday, a representative for the “Proud Mary” singer announced that she had died at her home in Kusnacht near Zurich, Switzerland .

“Tina Turner, the ‘queen of rock’n’roll’ has died peacefully today at the age of 83 after a long illness in her home in Kusnacht near Zurich, Switzerland,” their statement read.

“With her, the world loses a music legend and a role model... With her music and her inexhaustible vitality, Tina Turner thrilled millions of fans and inspired many artists of subsequent generations.”

The news of her death sent shockwaves throughout the music industry, with stars including Mick Jagger and Debbie Harry paying tribute .

“I’m so saddened by the passing of my wonderful friend Tina Turner,” Jagger wrote. “She was truly an enormously talented performer and singer. She was inspiring, warm, funny and generous. She helped me so much when I was young and I will never forget her.”

Harry, meanwhile, referred to herself as “a benefactor of the energy, creativity and talents of Tina Turner”, adding: “Tina was a great inspiration to me when I was starting out and remains so to this day.”

In recent years, Turner had suffered from ill health, having been diagnosed with intestinal cancer in 2016 and undergoing a kidney transplant in 2017. A private funeral ceremony will be attended by close friends and family, who have asked for privacy.

Born Anna Mae Bullock in Nutbush, Tennessee (her hometown would inspire her 1973 song “Nutbush City Limits”) in 1939, Turner became one of the bestselling recording artists of all time in a career spanning more than 60 years. In that time she earned 12 Grammy Awards.

After singing in church choirs as a child, Turner’s career began when she met singer Ike Turner on the St Louis nightclub circuit in 1957. After convincing Ike to let her sing with him, she became a featured vocalist in his band.

Around this time, Turner adopted the name “Tina”, with Ike adding his own surname so that he could replace her should she leave. In 1960, Turner released her first single, “A Fool For Love”, to critical acclaim and partial chart success, and Ike formed the Ike and Tina Turner Revue.

The pair married in 1962 and began releasing music together. Everything changed when they began working with Phil Spector, who produced the hit “River Deep – Mountain High” for his label. With a hit record under their belt, Ike and Tina supported the Rolling Stones on tour and gained celebrity fans in David Bowie, Cher and Elvis Presley.

The duo continued a successful streak throughout the Seventies. However, they split in 1976, with Tina later revealing that Ike had been violent and abusive, and had also cheated on her. In her 1986 autobiography, she narrated a harrowing tale of marital abuse, including the fact she had suffered a broken nose at the hands of Ike.

When Ike died in December 2007, Tina’s spokesperson was quoted as saying: “Tina is aware that Ike passed away earlier today. She has not had any contact with him in 35 years. No further comment will be made.”

Following the split, which was finalised in 1978 and left Turner with just two cars and the rights to her stage name, she returned to releasing music as a solo performer.

Even at the height of her career, however, Turner was performing for women in her audience, not to appear sexy to men.

Looking back in a 2018 interview, she said: “We were a sisterhood: me, my dancers, and our audience, out there having a good time together... At my shows, I wanted wives, husbands, grandparents, children, friends, everyone, to have fun. And here’s something I always understood. If you appeal to the women in the audience, the men will follow.”

She enjoyed a career renaissance in the Eighties, recording a string of big-selling hits such as “We Don’t Need Another Hero (Thunderdome)”, “What’s Love Got to Do With It”, “Private Dancer”, and “Let’s Stay Together”. In 1995, Turner performed the theme for James Bond film GoldenEye.

Other notable duets throughout her career included performances with David Bowie and the Rolling Stones, the latter of whom she took to the stage for Live Aid in Philadelphia in 1985.

During the performance, Jagger famously decided to rip off Turner’s skirt on stage. In an interview last month, Turner admitted that she’d “always had a crush” on the Rolling Stones frontman .

Turner’s autobiography, I, Tina , was adapted for the screen in 1993 as the biopic What’s Love Got To Do With It . Angela Bassett received an Oscar nomination for her performance as Turner.

However, vocal powerhouse Turner also dabbled in acting herself, appearing alongside Mel Gibson in 1985’s Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome , and Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1993’s Last Action Hero.

From 1994, Turner lived in Switzerland with her long-term partner, the German music executive Erwin Bach. The pair married in a civil ceremony in 2013.

In her second autobiography, 2018’s Tina Turner: My Love Story, she revealed that Bach saved her life by donating one of his kidneys to her.

She praised her husband in a rare interview in 2022, saying of their marriage: “It has enabled me to accept my mistakes and imperfections, to appreciate both the difficult times and the good times and the hurts of the past to let go. Accepting yourself as you are is true freedom.”

Turner had four children. The oldest, Raymond Craig, was the son of Kings of Rhythm saxophonist Raymond Hill. Turner and Ike later had a son, Ronnie Turner, and she adopted two of Ike’s children from a previous relationship.

In 2018, Craig died from an apparent suicide, aged 59. Then, in December last year, Ronnie died after being diagnosed with colon cancer. Discussing Ronnie’s death, Turner said that her son had “left the world far too early”.

The same year as Craig’s death, an Olivier-nominated musical based on his mother’s life, titled Tina – The Tina Turner Musical , opened on London’s West End in 2018.

In 2005, US president George W Bush described Turner’s legs as “the most famous in showbusiness”, with reports suggesting she insured them for hundreds of millions of dollars.

In 2021, Turner sold the rights to her back catalogue after reaching an agreement with BMG for an undisclosed sum. In the deal, she signed over her share of her recordings, her music publishing writer’s share and her name, image and likeness.

Turner’s solo works include 10 studio albums, two live albums, two soundtracks and five compilations, which together have sold more than 100 million records.
