Trek FX 1 comes in an alpha gold aluminum frame with a lifetime warranty. The frame is solid enough to hold up to 300 pounds.

Even better, the high-performance frame resists rust damage and snapping or bending, even after aggressive usage. 

And when it comes to its wheels, Trek FX 1 features a set of double-wall rims with 32 holes (representing the spoke count) that are stronger and more enduring than the average hybrid bike wheels. 

The tires are also stable to take on rough surfaces and aggressive riding. They give you the impression that you are riding an off-road beast like a mountain bike.

Like I mentioned before, no bike is flawless and not even Trek FX 1. So far, I could only find these three issues with the hybrid bike: 

a) Brakes Aren’t the Highest Quality 

While linear-pull brakes are decent performers and cheaper, they are unreliable in wet conditions and rugged terrains. They are best for dry, paved surfaces. 

So, you may have to upgrade them after a while, especially if you plan to ride off-road a lot. You’ll need to get quality disc brakes (View on Amazon) to replace Trek FX 1 Tektro linear-pull brakes. 

b) The Seat is Not the Most Comfortable 

While you may not have a problem riding Trek FX 1 short-distance, the saddle is not comfortable long-distance. You may suffer a bit of discomfort and numbness. 

The advantage is that you can upgrade the saddle by getting the best saddle for numbness , and you’ll be able to enjoy your long rides. 

c)      Pedals Are Low Quality

The pedals are another put-off, given that they come in plastic nylon construction.

Though their material choice makes them lightweight, they are not strong enough to withstand hard pedaling. So, they are also another part which you may have to upgrade.

Let me start by saying that Trek FX 1 is one of Trek’s most affordable bikes. The 2022 Trek FX 1 retails at $559.99, thus reasonable for the average buyer. 

But still, the bike goes further to back its price and prove it’s a bargain. Its robust build and lifetime frame warranty only assure you of a bike that you can use in the future.

Its versatility is another thing, given that any adult and most youths can ride it, regardless of gender and terrain,

Since one of FX 1ś concerns is its low-quality linear-pull brakes, getting a Trek FX 1 Disc solves the problem. Note, however, that you’ll pay a few dollars extra for the difference, but it’s worth it. 

Another note, however, is that the other difference that Trek FX 1 has over FX 1 Disc is that it’s slightly lightweight.

There is a lot that goes into an FX 1 build and Trek has the history and dedication to make the perfect hybrid bike.

The FX Alpha Gold, lightweight aluminum frame is designed for speed, comfort and durability. The frame set also offers a high tensile steel front fork with lowrider mounts. The frame comes in four sizes : 15, 17.5, 20 and 22.5 inches.

These sizes will fit riders from 4 feet 10 inches to 6 feet 7 inches in height.

The FX series makes use of rim brakes that squeeze the rim to slow and eventually stop the bike. The FX 1 uses Tektro alloy linear pull brakes on the front and rear rims.

The brake pads are long lasting but will eventually need to be replaced. The replacement pads are easy to install with a single screw set.

The Trek FX 1 makes use of the high performance of Shimano parts and the shifter is no different. The Shimano Altus EF500, 7 speed shifter is smooth, reliable and quiet.

For road riding the shifter will make hills disappear and inclines become manageable. This style of Shimano shifter is one of the reasons for the popularity of the FX 1.

Rims on a bike do a lot more than just mount tires. They must be sturdy enough for torque, shifting and avoid warping after prolonged braking. The Trek FX 1 checks all the boxes by using Bontrager Connection rims.

These rims are alloy rims featuring 36H cross spokes. The high spoke count allows for more weight on the tires either in turning or in cargo.

Other than your foot when you push off, the tires should be the only point of contact with the road. The tires should be good ones and the correct size for the duties of the bike. The FX series uses Bontrager H2 tires.

These tires are 700x35c or 28 inches diameter and 1 and 3/8 inches wide. The tires are not rated for mountain biking or downhill options but do very well on road or track.

Price Range

As with most other Trek bikes, the FX 1 has model differences and options you can customize. The base model will run you just around $450. However, with certain wide range of gearing options, such as 11 speed shifters or folding tires, your price can increase up to 1000 dollars or more.

What We Like

Trek is known for reliable and affordable builds. Their FX fitness line is no different.

There is a lot to like about the FX 1:

• Lightweight aluminum Bike Frameset.
• Up to 300-pound weight limit (rider and cargo).
• Frame is ANT+ ready.
• Frame has rack mount holes for fenders or cages.
• Shimano 7-speed shifter makes the bike fast and easy to handle.
• Great for hard riding workouts or casual rides.

What We Don’t Like

No bike brands are ever going to be exactly perfect. Each rider will have a different idea of what works and what doesn’t.

These are what didn’t work for us:

• Poor off-road handling, even on pavement edge or grass.
• The pedals that ship with the bike don’t last very long.
• The seat isn’t comfortable on long rides.
• Handlebar grips are hard and uncomfortable.
• Kickstand is not standard.

Buying Advice

Fitness bikes aren’t for everyone.

Trainers, athletes or downhill and mountain bikers will find little use from an all-around fitness bike. However, there is a large group that these bikes are perfect for .

The first group of riders are those looking for an entry level price for a mid-range bike.

If you ride on the road, enjoy casual rides as well as hard rides from time to time, the FX 1 is for you.

If you like challenging yourself and pushing yourself to your limits, the FX 1 is for you.

Likewise, if you fall into the group that commutes daily or rides constantly in the city, the nimble and responsive FX 1 will fit your style perfectly.

If you do purchase the Trek FX 1 you should consider a few things to go along with it. You will probably want to also invest in a new seat , grips and  pedals . All of those components are moderately inexpensive and will instantly improve your ride comfort.

You should also purchase the kick stand and water bottle holder. Especially if you commute or ride bike in the city daily . If you are more of a casual rider you might also think about adding fenders and racks to the bike to help you carry those impulse buys when you ride around town.

When looking for the best fitness bike or daily commuter the Trek FX 1 is a great choice. The FX series is one of Trek’s most popular models and will be a bike you use for years to come.

The reliable shimano shifter and derailleurs offer a smooth, fast and reliable ride on a lightweight, responsive frame.

If you want a budget friendly bike that looks, performs and handles like a mid-range bike, the Trek FX 1 is a perfect fit.

Trek FX1 vs FX2: Which Bike Should You Choose?

Trying to choose between Trek’s FX1 and FX2? Then you’ve come to the right place.

Trek’s FX range of hybrid bikes is fantastic, and I’ve previously looked at various models in the lineup: comparing the FX2 vs FX3 , the FX3 compared to the FX4 , and the jewel in the FX crown, a review of the FX6 . I’ve also compared the FX to the other range of hybrids manufactured by Trek, the Dual Sport .

Today though, we’re focusing specifically on the FX1 and FX2. There’s a big price difference between the two bikes (around $200) and I’m going to take a look and see whether the extra is worth paying for or whether you’d be best to save the money and go with the base model, the FX1.

First off then, I’ll do a head-to-head comparison of the specification for each of the two bikes. Next, I’ll review each bike separately and see where Trek is investing the money. Lastly, I’ll give you my recommendation as to which bike I believe is best value for money.

If you need an answer quicker than that, here’s my opinion. I say go with the FX2 . Why? Well, the FX2 is substantially lighter, it’s got much better brakes, and a superior front fork. All of which, in my view, justify the higher price tag.

Stick around, if you can, and we’ll go through these two great bikes in some more detail.

Overview of the Trek FX range

I’m a massive fan of hybrids like the FX and strongly believe that they’re the invisible backroom girls and boys of the biking world.

Hybrids are the bike for every occasion. Ideal for grocery trips with a backpack or paniers. The perfect transport on smooth pavement to the ocean. Great for cruising into the office along bike paths and city streets on your daily commute.

On the spectrum of bikes, you’ve got road bikes at one end (they’re fast, but not necessarily that comfortable to ride) and mountain bikes along at the other end (rugged and great for hitting the bike trails, but not great on smooth paved roads). These bikes are real specialists though. In the middle of the bike spectrum we have a large area that’s the domain of hybrid bikes. These are bikes that are versatile, dependable, and will go anywhere and do anything you ask of them.

They’re also brilliant fun to ride and to be honest they’re my go-to when I’m not chasing a personal best time or hitting some gnarly bike park.

Trek have been producing bikes since the mid-70’s, so they know a thing or three about these machines and that shows with their awesome FX hybrids. Ride style is upright and comfortable letting you watch the world go by – not hunched over like a road bike rider. The aluminum frames are light and strong – and a light bike means that you can go further, faster and with less effort. Component specifications are good at every price point in the range and, at the top of the tree, you get FX models that will rival many expensive road bikes.

The FX range boasts fourteen variations, incorporating three different frame styles. There’s a unisex/male with a horizontal crossbar, a female version with a slightly-sloping crossbar, and a step-through with a steeply-sloped crossbar. Entry-level is the FX1 (which we’ll talk more about in a moment) and the range goes up to the FX Sport 6, which swaps out the aluminum frame for carbon fiber and a top-flight list of components.

Let’s turn or attention specifically to the FX1 and FX2 and see how they measure up against each other, so we can determine the one that’s best value for money.

Trek FX1 Review

If you’re new to cycling and on a limited budget (aren’t we all!) then my view is that the FX1 is a great buy. For less than $500 dollars you get a lot of bike for your money and that translates to a lot of smile on your face.

Both the FX1 and FX2 have many similarities. Each bike has, at its core, an aluminum frame. This gives a bike which hits the sweet spot of being both strong and light at the same time (the FX1 clocking-in at 27.7 lbs total weight). The tires on both are the Bontrager H2 Comp, at 700x35c, this is a fast-rolling tire that also has enough width (and therefore air in the tube) to soak up and lumps and bumps in the road surface.

The drivetrain on the FX1 (which is the gear shifter on the handlebars, gear cogs and derailleurs) is a combination of good quality Shimano and SunRace components that are smooth and responsive. Total number of gears that the FX1 has is 3×7 = 21. Enough to get you up hills with ease, before you cruise fast down the other side.

Brakes on the FX1 are Tektro linear-pull. What does this mean? Well, linear-pull brakes are the style where you pull the brake lever and brake pads pull against the metal wheel rims in order to slow and stop you. Linear-pull brakes are seen as ‘entry-level’ in the world of cycling – vs the hydraulic disc brakes that the FX2 has – but they have important advantages. It’s all down to maintenance. Linear-pull brakes are easy to adjust by yourself (you just need an allen wrench and a little YouTube knowhow) and, when the brake blocks wear down, they’re simple and cheap to replace.

In summary, the FX1 is a great bike and offers excellent value for money. If you’re just getting into the sport, or want an ‘everyday’ bike for shopping errands, office commutes, or beach trips, then you’d struggle to find a better option.

Now, let’s compare the FX1 to the FX2.

Trek FX2 review

We’ve already seen that the FX range is excellent and the FX1 is a great first bike for everyday use.

I started off this article by saying that my favorite bike of the two is the FX2. So, let’s take a look and see what the reasons are for this.

The FX2 Disc (to give it its full title) is a step up from the FX1 in both price terms and components. The two bikes have the same aluminum frame, and they look similar, but there are some important differences.

First up, the front forks. The steel forks on the FX1 are replaced with alloy forks on the FX2. The big benefit of this is an overall weight reduction on the FX2. 27.72 lbs for the FX1 drops by around a pound and a half to 26.34 lbs on the FX2. That ‘lightening of the load’ means that you can cycle faster and more easily, getting where you want to go sooner and with less effort. Have a rummage around in the pantry for a bag of sugar or flour and you’ll see what this difference in weight actually feels like – it’s substantial.

We’ve looked at the linear-pull brakes that the FX1 has. In contrast, the FX2 has hydraulic disc brakes. These work differently to linear-pull. Instead of pulling brake blocks against the wheel rims, these use hydraulic brake fluid (like your car) to pull brake blocks against a separate metal disc by the wheel hubs. This gives much better stopping power, particularly in wet or muddy conditions as they’re not reliant on having dry wheel rims like the FX1 brakes. NB. If you like the sound of hydraulic disc brakes, but can’t justify the price of the FX2, then there’s a middle ground option with the Trek FX1 Disc – check it out if you like .

Of the two bikes, the FX2 Disc is my recommendation based on the list of components. The ride is fast and fun, and the price upgrade from the FX1, in my opinion, is fully justified by the component upgrades with the forks and brakes. Whichever bike you opt for though, I’ve got no doubt that you’ll have many years of enjoyable riding on it.

Trek FX 1 Review: Is It A Good Entry-Level Hybrid Bike

Welcome to my Trek FX 1 review in 2021.

Let me cut to the chase and go directly to my view of the best starting bikes you can have—the FX 1 checks all the boxes as the best entry-level bike.

This versatile hybrid bike comes with rack mounts, fender mounts, individual bike racks, and specially engineered aluminium frame. If you love casual riding, this bike is the perfect one because it is well equipped with rear derailleur, mechanical disc brakes, and alpha gold aluminium frame. If you want the perfect mountain biking experience while you track fitness progress, you need not look beyond this bike. The Trek FX 1 isn’t a high-end bike. BUT! at this price, you get more features, higher-quality component than any other hybrid bike.

Trek FX1 has a Shimano shifting system, which would normally be reserved for a much more expensive bike, while the other parts, including the wheels and fork, come from a range of different manufacturers. 

While Trek FX1 doesn’t have the mismatched parts problems which some bikes in this range can have, it also doesn’t have the synergy of a high-end bike with all parts from the same manufacturer, which are designed to work together either. 

In this review, we’ll look at the features and benefits of the Trek FX 1 in detail, including a close look at some of the most important parts of this versatile bike. As Trek FX1 is a good choice for new cyclists as well as experienced cyclists, we’ll also discuss the merits of having hybrid bike more generally. 

Things to Consider Before Buying a Hybrid Bike

Hybrid bikes like Trek FX1 are designed to have a lot of the strengths of both road bikes and mountain bikes, without any of the disadvantages. Depending on who you ask, these bikes are more or less successful in that regard. Without the highly specialized designs of a road or mountain cycle, Trek FX1 or other hybrids don’t tend to excel in any one area. 

However, not being specialized also means that your hybrid bike can handle more variety in terms of cycling habits and location than road bikes, with some of the grip, suspension, and maneuverability advantages of mountain bikes. 

As they don’t tend to have the same slim design, many people consider hybrids to be more similar to mountain bikes than road bikes. They are a good choice for rural areas – anywhere with gravel or dirt roads – and for urban users who want to be able to take their bike out of the city from time to time. 

A hybrid isn’t necessarily a good choice for purely urban riders as they’re bulkier and less sleek than road bikes. They’re also not a good replacement for mountain bicycles or trek bikes, which have more maneuverability, grip, and suspension, and are designed to handle difficult mountain trails. 

These bikes are best for users who are looking for a good fitness bike. They work well on a variety of different terrains and have adaptations which make them easier and more comfortable to ride, meaning that these bikes also appeal to casual riders. 

Features & Benefits

Now, it’s time to take a closer look at the Trek FX 1 . Trek bikes are generally well-balanced performance bikes which perform extremely well compared to similar models from other manufacturers. 

The FX 1 generally gets good ratings. The system of Trek FX1 holds together well, and you have a great deal of control in the saddle. It’s a safe, effective, and affordable bike. 

But that is all about the Trek FX1 as a whole. You can really see the value and performance of a bike when you focus on the smaller details. Let’s take a look at some of the most important features of this bike. 

The frame on Trek FX1 comes in 4 sizes, ranging from 15-22.5 inches. This makes it a comfortable bike for all from 4’10” to over 6”. The frame of Rek FX1 also has a comparatively high weight limit – up to 300 lbs – which compliments the design as a fitness bike as well as the high upper height limits. 

It has an aluminum alloy frame, which means it’s relatively lightweight, without the extreme lightness of carbon fiber, but also relatively durable. Aluminum is a good mid-range choice and works well for balancing the different strengths and weaknesses of this system. 

Trek FX1 also comes with a steel fork, which adds considerable durability to the design. While most people probably won’t need this feature, the fork also comes with lowrider mounts for a different riding experience. 

Suspension System

The suspension system on Trek FX1 is similar to that of a road bike. That is to say that it’s more minimal than that of a mountain cycle. However, Trek FX1 is still a relatively smooth ride, with the tires absorbing a reasonable amount of shock (and more if you upgrade them). 

The fork of Trek FX1 also handles some of the shock and vibration from riding, but it doesn’t have a telescoping option or the more advanced spring and dampening system of the best mountain bikes.

The Trek FX1 bike’s wheels are another compromise between the wider wheels of a mountain cycle and the thinner, taller wheels of a road bike. They’re Bontrager double-walled wheels, which have high durability and strength ratings. The wheels of Trek FX1 are highly unlikely to deform through normal use. 

They’re also designed to stay smooth, even with a lot of use over time, and this will help preserve the strength of your tires and prevent flats. 

Gear System

For a hybrid bike, the Trek FX 1 has a surprisingly advanced, 21 gear Shimano shifting system. The Shimano brand is known for being particularly smooth and easy shifting, as well as being especially durable.

These high-end shifters are what you look for on a premium bike, and it’s no wonder that they’re included on this Trek bike. Since this is an extensive 21-gear system, it’s got a ton of flexibility for different riding styles and terrain types.

Shimano shifters do need occasional tune-ups and maintenance, but they’re no worse in that regard than other high-end shifters. That combination of performance without requiring a lot of specialty care is what makes these shifters so important. While Shimano is getting more common on mid-range bikes as well as premium ones, it’s still nice to see these high-end parts included in a more affordable version of Trek’s FX line. 

The brake system of Trek FX1 is a Tektro alloy linear pull. This is reasonably smooth and highly effective, giving users the ability to stop on a dime if needed. As with most mid- to high-tier braking systems, it works best when well-adjusted and requires occasional maintenance. The brake pads of Trek FX1 will also eventually need replacing, but not usually for several years as long as you perform regular maintenance. 

Overall, the brakes of Trek FX1 aren’t anything special, but they perform well and are a valuable addition to this model.

Trek FX 1 vs Trek FX 2 Disc

The FX 1 and FX 2 are very similar bikes with a few key differences. They have frames made from the same material, the same basic sizing, and even the same size wheels. However, the FX 2 is slightly lighter, which makes it the better option for riders who like to ride fast. 

Both offer very similar rim braking systems, which are smooth and highly effective. 

Both are also considered to be fitness bikes, rather than road or mountain bikes. 

The biggest difference between the FX 1 and 2, other than speed and weight, is the price. The FX 2 is significantly more expensive than the FX 1. The FX 1 is a good fit for consumers on a budget, while the FX 2 is a reasonable upgrade which still fits firmly in mid-range when it comes to both price and performance.  Check our details review of Trek FX2 here.

Trek FX 1 vs Giant Escape 3 

Looking at the Trek FX 1 and the Giant Escape 3, the biggest differences are in which parts are best designed and most durable. In terms of bike type and performance, both are remarkably similar. They’re also in the same price range, which is part of what makes them such natural comparisons. 

The FX 1 comes with better tires and can accommodate a wider tire set. That’s not a huge difference, as at some point you will need to replace the tires, no matter the quality you start with, and it’s possible to upgrade in an affordable way. 

More importantly, the FX 1 comes with a better derailleur. This means that it offers smoother shifting between gears and will last longer, assuming proper maintenance is carried out. 

The Giant Escape 3, on the other hand, has a lightweight and durable Chromoly fork, which is an improvement over the Trek FX 1’s rigid fork. It’s also generally considered to have a more durable and flashier frame, although both bikes have frames which are made from the same materials. 

The brakes are similar, and made by the same manufacturer, as are several other parts. 

When it comes to these two, it’s a matter of personal preference and whether you value a better fork or a better derailleur more. 

Trek FX 1 vs Trek Verve 1

This is another very similar selection set. Both bikes are hybrids, both are fitness bikes, and both are designed for cyclists who are looking for a budget-friendly option. 

The biggest difference is that the Verve 1 is a comfort fitness bike, while the FX 1 is closer in fit and style to a road bike. The FX 1 will allow you to ride faster, encourages building good muscle groups for cycling in triathlon and race settings, and requires a more dynamic and somewhat difficult posture. 

The Verve 1 offers a wider saddle, wider tires, and a more upright position. This means that it is slightly easier to use and keeps the rider in a more comfortable and back-friendly position. 

Overall, the FX 1 is a better option as a fitness bike for riders who want to push their performance or work up to a premium mountain or trail bike. The Verve 1 is a fitness bike which is better designed for riders with pre-existing injuries, or who are looking for a more comfortable and relaxed workout.  Check our detailed review of Trek Verve 1 here.

Overall, the Trek FX 1 is a reasonable fitness hybrid. Trek FX1 is a good option for riders who are looking for a more casual bike but don’t necessarily want something which can handle difficult mountain trails or accelerate quickly in a race. 

It lacks the synergistic performance of high-end bikes made from all matching components, but it doesn’t have the performance lag of bikes which don’t have well-matched parts either. 

The Trek FX 1 is a great combination of price and performance. As a mid-tier hybrid, the FX 1 is an excellent addition to Trek’s line.

Are Trek Bikes Worth It? (BRAND ANALYSIS)

Choosing which bicycle brand you wish to follow, if any, will come down to a number of personal choices and factors. Heritage, lifestyle, impact on society, ethics, values, environmental and economic factors are part of the decision-making process in signing on to any company’s goods or services.

Bicycles are a consumer product and manufacturers compete for your attention and cash. They have proven to be capable of fulfilling many needs from essential means of transportation, through to a commuting tool, leisure vehicle and source of sporting competition.

With such a wide range of uses and budgets working from a wonderfully simple design process, manufacturers need to create and furnish values and meanings to distinguish one from another.

This is especially true as many of the component parts are made by third-party providers. The bicycle manufacturer can partner with these companies who are brands in their own right.

Not Sure What Bike You Need?

Trek is a bicycle manufacturer which has been active since 1976. They are a family-owned business from the USA who started out from a small red barn, producing 900 machines in their first year. That barn is still around, just along from their HQ.

They have had revenues reported to exceed over $1 billion per annum from sales of over a million machines and are established as a global cycling brand with main dealerships, authorised repairers and licensed outlets across the world. 

The company offers a huge range of different styles of bicycle and were early adopters of the e-bike model too. They are focused on always thinking about the next phase of their development. They offer clothing, helmets, lighting, accessories, mudguards / fenders, all through their in-house ranges.

We’ll have a little look into the journey the Trek brand has taken, some of the ups and downs and examine some of the values, qualities, messages and principles it brings to the production and sale of its bicycles in particular.

Is Trek a Good Bike Brand?

The aspects of a brand are what sets it apart from others. They provide stability, foundation and direction. Trek focuses on maintaining quality, they make their employees feel critical to the business and reward them with bonuses and incentives. Brand values help workers put in longer hours. 

A rewarded and well-compensated workforce makes fewer compromises. More of their products meet the high standards demanded from the brand. Their retail stores contain happier people to greet you. They feel invested in the company.

Once you have happy employees, you get more ideas about products, more of the right decisions are made and more people get on board with them and time and effort are saved in the production. Trek spends time caring about its employees. 

According to US business magazines, its minimum wage is above the usual amount in the USA and they have regular ‘pulse’ surveys to check in with teams. There are deliveries of gift boxes and packages to employees.

The company feels that this reflects back into the pride and love that each employee has for the finished products that are designed and made. Customers feel happy and cared about too.

As a global company, Trek needs to ensure that its responsibilities and concerns are in sync with the world around them. The company has taken steps to deliver good messages around the world although there have been rocky roads it has needed to negotiate through as well.

Trek provided the bicycles for Lance Armstrong at times when he was winning the Tour de France. No doubt they saw increased demand during his moments of victory. The fallen hero saw his personal brand take a blow in subsequent years and it is likely that the company had to rebuild its reputation too.

During a time of heightened civil-rights tensions in the US, the company responded to scenes of their bicycles being used by police to control crowds of demonstrators. 

It made a commitment to creating jobs and investing in training and scholarship programmes and funding in underserved areas of the community. It also granted employees paid time off to volunteer in non-profit areas designed to build local communities.

The company has invested over the years in technology to help with the design of frames, geometry, suspension and components too.

They have acquired companies over the years and utilised the expertise and knowledge of similarly motivated pioneers like their own founders.

Gary Fisher and Keith Bontrager are two such radicals who lit up the early mountain biking scene in the USA whose companies have and now sit under the Trek umbrella.

Who Owns Trek Bike Company?

All research done indicates that it is Intrepid Corporation. When Trek was established, an investment of start-up money came via them. The key decisions and passions stem from the co-founders, Richard Burke and Bevill Hogg. Members of the Burke family hold senior positions today.

Are Trek Bikes British?

Trek is a US company which distributes its bicycles, components and accessories all over the world. It has offices across the globe including in the United Kingdom. 

Are Trek Bikes Made by Giant?

Design and manufacture are separate elements of the process and we know that components often come from other parties. Trek designs its own bicycles and some components. Like other manufacturers, frames can be supplied from factories around the world and some of those produce frames for Giant.

Where Are Trek Bikes Manufactured?

Although Trek’s headquarters are based in Wisconsin, USA, their components and bikes are manufactured across the world, primarily in the Netherlands, China, Taiwan and Germany.

Are Trek Bikes Expensive?

Entry-level adult bikes from Trek start at £475 ($500) but can reach as high as £13,600 ($13,549) for premium models. Of the 329 bikes available to buy on Trek’s website, the average price of a Trek bike was £4414.80 ($5840), while the median price was £3,600 ($4,762).

Trek bicycles are more expensive than those you might purchase from bicycle supermarkets and less so than handmade machines designed and manufactured in Italian artisan workshops.

Why is Trek So Expensive?

It is a fact of commercial life that sometimes the best brands have a price tag attached to the values they highlight.

Rather than specialising in niche areas, Trek offers machines for all riders. This costs more than putting all your eggs in one basket. It invests in quality materials, new technologies and design methods. It runs hundreds of retail outlets around the world. Research and marketing come at a price.

Their trust in the products is the catalyst for their lifetime warranty on newer frame sets (frame and rigid fork), main frame and full suspension swing arms for the lifetime of the original owner and for their in house carbon wheels with carbon rims. Manufacturers have introduced part-carbon, part-alloy wheels so the distinction is necessary.

Clothing, parts and accessories, rear suspension linkage components, including bearings, rocker link and accompanying hardware and components, Bontrager wheels with alloy rims and paint and transfers have a two-year warranty package. Some of their kit made before 2019 also benefits from a warranty package.

They have aftercare for carbon materials and their customer service also supports good relationships and a culture of listening to you when you bring your bicycle in. 

Trek Bikes: Cheapest vs Most Expensive Model

Are trek bikes overpriced.

Trek bicycles are trusted and well thought of in their own country and worldwide. Negative views tend to be limited to brand decisions or sales decisions unrelated to manufacture or design. There are so many competitors to take sales away from Trek but this does not seem to affect them.

Their lowest full-price bicycle for Discerning Cyclists is the 2021 FX 1 Disc Hybrid bike , which retails for £475 ($500). The disc brakes inspire more confidence, it has internal cable routing for cleanliness and reduces the risk of damage.

The Trek Alpha Aluminum frame it uses is regularly reviewed and updated for strength and as an entry-level bicycle offers full mudguard / fender and rack compatibility,

Do Trek Bikes Keep Their Value?

With a good level of support via the warranty scheme which extends to secondary owners and a brand-leading reputation, Trek represents a good win for owners and prospective owners. 

Trek invests in frame geometry design and is innovative. They have a reputation for quality and comfort. Trusted around the world, they support pro teams to enhance the value of their products and they have a wide support network. This helps build confidence in their offer and supporting value.

A 2019 Trek Domane SL7 Disc Women’s road bike would cost £4,178 ($5,780) new. In good condition, the value would be up to £2,351 ($3,252). This model retains more value than the average equivalent bicycle . Other examples are available with a search on second-hand sites.

Do Trek Bikes Go On Sale?

Like most manufacturers, when a specific line comes to an end, their prices will be reduced in order to help sales and move the inventory on. Trek has distribution licensing deals with independent bicycle retail outlets and these shops sell them at discounted prices too. 

Is a Trek Bike Worth the Money?

The long-standing nature of Trek in a competitive marketplace is a good sign of value for money.  Reviews and feedback about quality, lifespan and service build the whole package. Decisions made about downshifting to less expensive machines might be linked to other factors like use or budget. 

If your employer is signed up to any one of the many Cycle to Work schemes which operate in the UK, a Trek bicycle could be acquired and the cost can be spread over a couple of years.

How Long Does a Trek Bike Last?

The build quality of the frame and components made by Trek give them a good reputation for being long lasting. As always, use and care play a part and mechanical components on a bicycle wear out through use. I have ridden one Trek frame since 2013 and one since 2019 and each performs well for me.

Is a trek bike good for commuting to work.

With the reputation for quality and range of bicycles on offer, Trek would be considered a good bicycle for commuting to work. Many of the products in their range of commuting bicycles come ready made for accepting racks and mudguards / fenders and lighting accessories too.

As city-living and dwelling increases in the 21st Century, transportation by bicycle is becoming legitimised again as it once was in the early and mid 20th century without shame or embarrassment.

There is a chain guard fitted as standard. It will be a friendly and reliable workhorse and companion. It won’t show up as glowing hot if you need to lock it up in the open and won’t encourage you to take risks on the city streets.

Review: Trek FX+ 2

If you come to me and say, “I’ve never ridden an electric bike before,” I am probably going to take a few factors into consideration. The first is safety. If you’ve never built a bike, I’m probably not going to recommend a mail-order one you have to assemble yourself. You don’t want to discover that you've failed to tighten a screw when you’re going 20 miles per hour down a hill.

You also probably want a bike that’s reasonably priced, comfortable, and convenient to ride. In fact, you might want one that’s as close to your first human-powered bike as possible. Trek’s FX+ 2 hits all the sweet spots. It’s made by a reputable manufacturer with a wide retailer network. The reasonable base price includes all the commuter components, like integrated lights and fenders. Most importantly, it’s light and maneuverable.

It’s not a 65-pound “starter” ebike that will crush you if you stop on a hill or forget to charge the battery. Nor is it a smart bike that makes you spend 20 minutes walking through an app before you can ride it. I've been testing ebikes at home for years, and this is the first one my 60-year-old dad has felt comfortable grabbing and using to chase after my kids. “Sometimes I don’t even turn it on,” he remarked the other day. That’s the whole point.

The FX+ 2 comes in two configurations and three different sizes. The default model has a regular step-over top tube, and the FX+ 2 Stagger has a step-through top tube. Both come in a variety of colors and have small, medium, and large sizes. I’m 5'2" and the small-size Stagger fits me well. However, if you’re smaller than 5 feet, you might want to look at a different bike.

The cables, battery, and motor are inside the frame. The only clue the FX+ 2 Stagger is an ebike at all is a small unit with only three buttons on it: a power button, and plus and minus symbols. When you turn on the bike, its lights turn on, and two light meters show how much battery you have left and what level of pedal assistance you have toggled on.

That’s it. There’s no bright LCD display and no throttle. This might seem like a downside, but I use my electric bike for commuting and running errands. When I lock it up on a rack, it gives me peace of mind to know that no one’s going to spot a lone ebike in the wild and immediately try to steal it (or the battery).

I also appreciate the clarity in the controls. I’ve tried other electric bikes with a one-button toggle, but I could never remember how many times to press the button to toggle the level of assist, or what light indicated how much battery I had left.

The FX+ 2 has a 250-watt Hydrive rear hub motor, which is the European standard. That might seem slightly underpowered to Americans looking to power up huge hills, but the bike is so light and maneuverable that having a smaller motor doesn’t matter much at all. The medium frame size weighs 40 pounds—almost 30 pounds lighter than my own Tern GSD S00.

Not only is it easy to scootch up hills, it’s also easy to maneuver onto crowded bike racks when I’m out, or to lift onto our hanging bike rack in my garage. Also, for the past two weeks, it’s the first bike both my dad and I have grabbed to run errands around the neighborhood. The stated range is 35 miles, but we’ve put at least 10 miles on it by now, and the battery seems largely untouched. The fast 45c road tires didn’t hurt, either.

It does lack a few features we're used to seeing on higher-end ebikes by now, like a low-maintenance carbon belt drive or a continuously variable shifter. Instead, it has a regular bike chain on a nine-speed Shimano shifting system, with a derailleur that, yes, you may have to adjust occasionally.

But honestly, this was more than fine by me. I didn’t have to learn a new shifting system or figure out how to calibrate the gearing with the assist levels. I wasn’t riding a bike that was trying to predict how much assist I’d need and when—I could simply toggle on more or less as I rode. In that way, it felt much easier and more natural. 

It also has a lot of accessories that may be equally important, especially as the weather here in Oregon has grown cold, gray, and wet in the past few weeks. The 120-lumen headlamp is incredibly bright. The bell is incredibly loud. The fenders have kept my jeans relatively dry, and I’ve been able to bungee items onto the rear rack. A kickstand keeps it up in the garage for quick access, and hydraulic disc brakes work even when the rain is pouring down.

The price point may seem high compared to direct-to-consumer bikes from Aventon, Lectric, or Rad Power. But once you start adding up the cost of quality components, labor, and accessories, their prices start inching up. Mail-order companies are able to offer much lower prices on base models because their motors are cheaper. With a nicer motor, a mail-order bike like the Ride1Up Prodigy is priced comparably to the FX+ 2, and you have to assemble and safety-check it yourself.

Over the years, I’ve seen bicycle manufacturers debate and then struggle to add or subtract features that will make electric bikes more attractive to people who haven’t biked before. Extremely low step-throughs! Weird shifting systems! Apps! Huge tires! Maybe the best way to get people on an electric bike is the same way you get people on a regular bike—by making it fun, light, and easy to ride.

The Missouri Tigers landed a commitment from Henry Fenuku, a three-star prospect out of North Crowley High School in Fort Worth, Texas.

Feneku visited Missouri Friday, June 7 and had upcoming visits scheduled to Georgia, Texas A&M and USC. The 6-foot-4. 295 pound lineman had 29 offers, including ones from Ohio State, Ole Miss along with the Bulldogs and Aggies.

On 247Sports' rankings, Fenuku was ranked as the No. 21 interior offensive lineman in the country and the No. 47 prospect in Texas. He primarily played left guard in his junior season for a North Crowley team that went 14-1 and made it to the Texas 6A D-I state semifinals.

This is now the eigth player to commit to Missouri in the Class of 2025, the first being four-star quarterback Matt Zollers. Feneku is the fourth out-of-state player in the class in the second offensive lineman, joining four-star Jake Lange of Eureka, Missouri.

The next lineman to join them could be Carius Curne, a four-star prospect and the No.1 rated player in Arkansas who took a visit to Missouri in early June.

From documentaries about war in Ukraine and Gaza to the sweetness of “Bluey” to the earthiness of “Somebody Somewhere” and “Reservation Dogs” to the Mel Brooks canon, the 84th annual Peabody Awards ceremony on Sunday saluted an array of standout TV programs, movies, documentaries, podcasts, video games and more.

The respected awards, adminstered by the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communications, were held at the Beverly Wilshire hotel, marking the first time the Peabodys were handed out on the West Coast after decades in New York.

The high volume of conflict in the world and in the U.S. — from school shootings to hate crimes to the spike in political extremism — was reflected in the programs selected for this year’s honors and in the comments on stage from winners. A number of documentarians, producers and filmmakers sounded the alarm about the dangers of misinformation and deepfakes seeping into the digital historical record.

“It’s not only the people who are getting killed in war — it’s the truth,” said Mstyslav Chernov, director of “20 Hours in Mariupol,” which won the Oscar for feature documentary in March and was also recognized with a Peabody. “I wish all my fellow documentary filmmakers who are out there strength and energy to fight for truth because that’s the fight that’s waiting for us.”

Phil Williams, a news anchor at NBCUniversal-owned WTVF-TV Nashville, echoed Chernov’s sentiment, urging the crowd to remember that local broadcast journalists are in a daily fight to establish the facts of any given situation. “Local journalists are fighting for truth in their own communities — we need you all now more than ever,” Williams said while accepting the Peabody for “Hate Comes to Main Street,” an expose of the troubled past of far-right local candidate Gabrielle Hanson.

“Art is about making people think and feel,” Nyswaner said. “I hope that we keep telling artists to be more provocative and ambitious and don’t serve some algorithim that doesn’t really care if we move people to think or feel.”

The precarious state of democracy was also addressed. Moses Bwayo, director of “Bobi Wine: The People’s President,” cited his home country’s example as a sign of the dangers of complacency about political systems. Uganda has worked for more than 60 years since its 1962 independence to establish a true democratic political system, as demonstrated by his documentary about the struggles of the pop star and populist politician.

“We need to protect our democracies,” Bwayo said. “Protect your democracies. Protect that system.”

There were lighter moments during the marathon presentation of 37 awards. Peabody jurists saw fit to celebrate the popular Australian cartoon series “Bluey,” about a family of dogs. Melanie Zanetti, who provides the voice of Mum, was on hand to accept the award. She got a big laugh when she ended her short string of thank-yous with the Aussie slang that has become a staple of the series: “Wackadoo.”

With her win for the FX comedy “The Bear,” Abby Elliott continued a family tradition begun by her late grandfather Bob Elliott , one half of radio comedy duo Bob and Ray. “My grandfather won this award in 1951, and it feels very special,” Elliott told Variety on the red carpet. Of continuing his legacy of creating art that makes change, she added: “This is why we get into the business. It’s the purpose of it and it’s thrilling.”

Mel Brooks, the 97-year-old seminal figure in comedy, was feted with the Career Achievement Award for his long run in standup, stage, TV, film and Broadway. No less a legend than Billy Crystal was on hand to do the honors for the man he called “my friend, my mentor and my honorary uncle.”

Brooks beamed and basked in a long standing ovation. Despite his advancing years he was relatively spry on stage as he turned on the charm for the audience. “Humility is not part of my vocabulary,” Brooks joked. He closed with a vow: “I promise the Geoge Foster Peabody people — I will not sell this.”

Quinta Brunson, creator, showrunner and star of “Abbott Elementary,” was recognized with the Trailblazer Award, presented by multihyphenate Donald Glover. Glover joked about having been asked to give Brunson numerous awards in recent years, thanks to her impact. “She uses comedy to highlight the real and everyday struggles of underfunded public schools,” he said.

The night ended with the familiar sounds of the stirring “Star Trek” theme as the venerable sci-fi franchise created by the late Gene Roddenberry was recognized with the Institutional Award.

J.J. Abrams, the super-producer who revived “Star Trek’s” box office fortunes in 2009, hailed the show’s legacy of “storytelling that projects the best of humanity far into the future.” Abrams handed the award to Alex Kurtzman, the chief content officer of the “Star Trek” universe under the Paramount umbrella. Joining Kurtzman on stage were more than two dozen members of the franchise’s cast over the years.

“It’s a barbecue with your weirdest friends,” joked producer Jenny Lumet on the red carpet, describing the evening’s multigenerational reunion.

Added Kurtzman: “It’s so amazing to see how they share stories and what experiences were similar no matter what time frame it was made in. Once you’re in ‘Star Trek,’ it’s with you forever. That’s a complicated and wonderful legacy to carry around, and watching the way people carry it is very heartening.”

In his remarks, Kurtzman echoed the spirit of the night. He emphasized that “Star Trek” has long prospered with its consistent vision of “hope that our better angels will lead us across the frontiers of space and ourselves with modesty, dignity and respect” and the conviction that “we are all made of the same stardust.”

'Clipped' finds bigger questions in the scandal of ex-Clippers owner Donald Sterling

'Clipped' dramatizes the 2014 leak of former L.A. Clippers owner's racist comments

It could be easy to dismiss a limited series about the Donald Sterling scandal today. Even when it first broke 10 years ago, after gossip site TMZ published a recording of racist comments by the onetime Los Angeles Clippers owner, the whole thing had an unsavory, tabloidy feel — kicking off a firestorm of criticism which shocked the sports world and led to a forced sale of the team.

Making the situation even more tawdry: Sterling was recorded by a younger female companion who was not his wife, leading some to assume she leaked the audio amid a power struggle with his spouse. (The woman maintained then she did not leak the tapes herself and that she and Sterling were never romantically involved; The series suggests it was at least a strong possibility.)

But FX’s Clipped digs deeper as its six episodes unfold, using Sterling’s abrasive toxicity to leverage a story about wealth, power, class, race and more — asking powerful questions about what people will accept to access money, privilege and prized accomplishments.

A team hobbled by an unpredictable owner

The story opens with the arrival in Los Angeles of coach Doc Rivers, played by the barrel-chested Laurence Fishburne as a savvy optimist — a former NBA all-star and well-regarded coach hired from Boston to shape up a team he once played for. When a fan asks why Rivers, as a championship coach, would join a franchise considered one of the worst in the league, he answers simply: “I like a challenge.”

But Rivers soon discovers his biggest challenge is the team’s owner — an eccentric real estate mogul given to treating players like prized possessions, monopolizing meetings with long, rambling monologues, and tossing off racist and sexist asides with little care for the consequences. Think a more abrasive Donald Trump with even less of a filter.

Modern Family alum Ed O’Neill inhabits Sterling as an irascible, mercurial crank, blithely unconcerned with the havoc he creates, certain his wealth and power both insulates and justifies his actions.

Based on the ESPN 30 for 30 podcast The Sterling Affairs, FX’s Clipped carefully lays out a scenario it turns upside down later in the series, with Australian actress Jacki Weaver offering a particularly crafty performance as Sterling’s long put-upon wife, Shelly. Early on, we watch with sympathy as she sees her husband of 60 years lavish expensive clothing, housing and a Ferrari on a beautiful young assistant everyone assumes is his girlfriend, V. Stiviano (Cleopatra Coleman).

Eventually, we’ll learn there is a tough calculating core beneath Shelly’s goodnaturedly scatterbrained veneer — and a reason why she and Donald have stayed married over a lifetime.

Exposing Donald Sterling’s not-so-secret racism

When Shelly tries to get her husband to drop Stiviano from their lives, gossip website TMZ publishes a recording of Donald urging his assistant to stop posting pictures of herself on social media with famous Black men like retired hoops star Earvin “Magic” Johnson. “It bothers me a lot that you want to broadcast that you’re associating with Black people,” Sterling argues in an exchange that was featured on TMZ’s website.

Sterling’s questionable behavior had been a dirty secret inside the NBA for years , but the leaked audio forces Rivers and the Clippers players to decide if they will boycott games, just as the team is winning. There is already a simmering tension in professional basketball between highly talented, well paid, mostly Black players and the white owners, staffers and fans who surround them; Sterling’s recording put all those tensions on full display.

But what really interests Clipped, is how the scandal forces everyone around Sterling to face the compromises they have made to get whatever they have. Players must choose between taking a principled stand or playing to capture a historic championship. Flashbacks show Stiviano struggling to run a failing food truck business before a friend shows her how to align herself with powerful, wealthy men to pay her bills.

Later on, that same friend reminds Stiviano she’s on a clock to get real money out of Donald Sterling. “You’re 31…cream curdles,” she adds. “It’s the same as playing ball. They give you 15 years to earn, then you’ve gotta find your own revenue stream.”

Rivers thinks back to when he was a player on the Clippers in 1991, at the height of the scandal over Los Angeles police beating Black motorist Rodney King, wondering if his decision not to speak out back then was a mistake he is repeating by urging his players not to boycott Sterling now.

The coach’s unexpected confidant while navigating all this: actor, director and TV host LeVar Burton, who plays himself, befriending Rivers in a steam room they both frequent. Relaxing in the living room of Rivers’ lavish condo, the two men have a revealing conversation about feeling caught between the comforts of success in a white-dominated America and the consequences for successful Black people who reveal their anger over racial injustice.

“America first met me as [enslaved youth] Kunta Kinte [in the miniseries Roots ]…then I read to their children and maintained the integrity of their favorite spaceship…soon, people began to think of me as safe,” Burton says, adding that he paid a financial price when he took public actions that were seen as edgy or remotely confrontational.

“So I keep the chains [from Roots ] on my living room wall,” he adds. “I want [house guests] to know that while I am unquestionably their friend, I’m also absolutely filled with rage.”

Facing the reality of compromise

But even when expressed publicly, does rage like that bring lasting change? Clipped ’s ending, which I won’t detail here, puts the answer seriously in doubt.

It’s tempting to compare Clipped with another prestige TV show on a dysfunctional Los Angeles-based basketball team: HBO’s series on the Lakers, Winning Time . No doubt, sports fans may criticize Clipped for having some of the same weaknesses: Circumstances tweaked to enhance drama, more flattering portrayals given to someone like Rivers (who was involved in the production as a consultant) and a heightened recreation of a scandal many already know well.

Still, Clipped aims a bit higher, teasing out a story where everyone involved is both more — and less — than they seem. Though its message about the ubiquity of compromise and the enduring power of wealth may be a bit tough to swallow.
