Blackrock college book place in leinster cup final.

Blackrock College booked their place in the Leinster Schools Senior Cup final after a six try 41-5 victory over Newbridge College today.

Justin Vanstone’s side will play Gonzaga in the final on the 3rd of April.

Despite a strong start from Newbridge inside the first couple of minutes, it was Blackrock College who found the first score of the game.

In a move that began inside the Blackrock half, Hugh Cooney passed the ball to the dangerous Ruben Maloney. Maloney accelerated through the Newbridge defence before finding Charlie Malony who ran in for the game’s first try. Zach Quirke converted from the tee to add the extra two.

Ruben Maloney was heavily involved yet again just moments later. The Blackrock College full back found space down the blind side before offloading to Gus McCarthy.

The Blackrock captain fed the ball back into the path of Maloney who unselfishly passed inside him to Luke Kritzinger to score in the corner.

Midway through the first half, Quirke added a penalty to his tally to stretch his side’s lead to 15 points. From here Newbridge looked like a different team and out half Tom Bohan showed his class with some brilliant kicks in behind the Rock defence.

Newbridge kept the pressure mounted on their opponents and looked destined to score when Blackrock College’s Paddy McCarthy and Liam Molony were both sin-binned just seconds apart for separate incidents on their own try line.

Sadly, for Johne Murphy’s side, they couldn’t take advantage and from the very next play, Blackrock scored their third of the afternoon courtesy of flanker Inigo Cruise O’Brien.

Justin Vanstone’s side got the second half to an exciting start when Tom Brigg capitalized on a Newbridge defensive error right on their own try touch down on the line and found their fourth try of the game.

Newbridge were given a glimmer of hope when Tadgh Brophy tapped quickly from a penalty on the Blackrock 5 metre line. Brophy passed the ball into the dangerous Todd Lawlor who crossed for his side’s first points of the game.

Blackrock responded immediately and from the very next play, replacement lock Conor Tonge drove over from close range and Quirke followed up yet again with another conversion.

Blackrock put the icing on the cake when flanker Inigo Cruise O’Brien showed great improvisation when he found himself on the wing. The Blackrock number 7 chipped the ball over the Newbridge winger before racing around him and diving over in the corner to round off an amazing performance from Blackrock College.

’Rock hunt down a 70th title but ’Zaga eager to join roll of honour

If the ranelagh lads bring their attacking game, this promises to be a gripping final.

Leinster Schools Senior Cup final

Blackrock College v Gonzaga College

Unless it ends in a stalemate, there is set to be a landmark victory in the Leinster Schools Senior Cup decider at the RDS on Sunday afternoon (kick-off 1pm).

Should they come out on top in the south Dublin venue, it will be an extraordinary 70th title at this grade for an impressively assembled Blackrock College. If Gonzaga College are the ones to prosper, they will become the 18th school in the history of the competition to add their name to the roll of honour.

After edging out St Michael's College in a pulsating opening-round encounter back on February 13th, it was expected that 'Rock were going to be the team to beat in the latter stages of the cup. They have fully justified their favourites tag since then by recording comprehensive wins at the expense of Terenure College (48-0) and Newbridge College (41-5).

Remarkably, 13 different players have scored tries for Justin Vanstone's charges in their three games to date, with Gus McCarthy, Hugh Cooney, Luke Kritzinger and Inigo Cruise-O'Brien the only ones to cross over more than once.

Eye-catching

Like 'Rock, Gonzaga's most eye-catching performance came in the first round, when the Ranelagh school recorded a stunning 34-26 victory over Clongowes Wood College.

Although not at the same level as Blackrock, Declan Fassbender's 'Zaga still clocked up good tallies against Wesley College (32-7) and St Mary's College (34-21) in the subsequent rounds.

Inside centre Jody Browne has been a leading light for them, with three tries in as many games, while outhalf Stephen McMahon and fullback Hugo McLaughlin have shared place-kick duties in an effective manner.

Perhaps the most recognisable name within the Gonzaga ranks is that of number eight Paul Wilson – an All-Ireland minor football champion with his native Meath in 2021.

This will technically be the second final in succession that ’Zaga have contested, given their 2019 decider against St Michael’s College was the last one to officially take place. The scheduled showdown between Newbridge and Clongowes 12 months later was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and the competition wasn’t held in 2021.

They finished 23 points adrift (28-5) of an excellent Michael's outfit on St Patrick's Day three years ago and, while Blackrock are capable of dominating the proceedings in Ballsbridge, Gonzaga will certainly be in the reckoning if they can force their attacking game on the Williamstown men.

69-times winners Blackrock College will face Gonzaga College in the Leinster Schools Senior Cup final after they comfortably overcame Newbridge College at Energia Park yesterday.

Defending joint-champions from the Covid-affected 2020 season, Newbridge (coached by former Munster star Johne Murphy) couldn’t match the pace and power of ‘Rock in this one-sided affair.

Inside the opening 10 minutes, ‘Rock had crossed the whitewash through Charlie Molony and Luke Kritzinger to firmly establish their credentials. A routine Zach Quirke penalty moved them into a 15 point lead on the first-quarter mark and despite subsequently losing Paddy McCarthy and Liam Molony to yellow cards, they held firm in their absence.

Justin Vanstone’s south Dubliners were restored to their full compliment before the opening period had ended and there was enough time for Inigo Cruise-O’Brien to add a converted try and propel ‘Rock towards an unassailable 22-0 interval cushion.

Tom Brigg rounded off a line-out maul move two minutes after the resumption to extend their lead, before Newbridge finally opened their account with a Todd Lawlor five-pointer on 46 minutes.

While the outcome was well beyond doubt at this stage, Blackrock added tries through Conor Tonge and Cruise-O’Brien (his second) to ensure they had the final say in Donnybrook.

Will be sad to see Rhys depart, as is widely rumoured, but good for him if he gets more gametime elsewhere. He'll always go down as a legend in these parts. Moloney has been really unlucky with injuries, but for me he could quite easily get squeezed out. I haven't seen much of him, but have also never thought he looked like a top tier player. Would be strange for me if Soroka goes to Munster (as widely speculated) where there is a fairly lengthy back row queue as well. I do think it's fair to say the next tier below our academy looks a little bare for the first time in a long time. No Leinster back rows in this year's Irish U20s (and none hugely unlucky to miss out either IMO), and only Liam Molony from last year's team (who wasn't a starter).

  • Link copied copy-link

Italy U18s Festival

Excitement is building ahead of the Six Nations Under-18s Men’s festival where rugby’s best and brightest young talents will get the chance to show what they can do while representing their country.

England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France and Italy have all named their 26-man squads for their three 70-minute matches with the action getting underway on Saturday 9 April with further games on Wednesday 13 April before it culminates on Sunday 17 April.

This will be the first Six Nations Under-18s Men’s festival since 2019 due to the pandemic but there are plenty of teenage rugby stars bidding to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Louis Rees-Zammit, Raffi Quirke and Stephen Varney – all of whom were involved three years ago.

All of the 2022 action will take place at the FFR National Centre in Marcoussis, France’s training base situated on the outskirts of Paris.

HOW IT WORKS

France were the only team to go unbeaten in 2019 and kick off the action against Ireland in the first round of fixtures with Scotland taking on Italy and England facing Wales.

Wednesday sees England face Italy with France locking horns with Scotland and Italy taking on England.

The final day’s action includes France against Wales, Ireland’s clash against Italy and an intriguing match-up between Scotland and England.

All players must have been born after January 1, 2004, to be eligible to compete which explains why some school leavers may not feature in their respective nation’s team.

THE CONTENDERS

France have had plenty of success at age group levels in the last few years with an abundance of young talent for Les Bleus to pick from by the time they get to senior level.

This year’s crop will be desperate to show what they can do as they look to make it successive festivals without defeat.

England have representatives from all Gallagher Premiership sides bar Saracens, while the Wales squad is dominated by eight Dragons players fresh from winning the Under-18 Regional Championships.

Wales coach Matt O’Brien has also included 10 new players who did not feature in the capped international defeat to England at Taunton last month, while Scotland coach Ross Miller admits it was a tough decision to cut his 39-man training squad down to 26.

Unlike some of the other nations, Ireland have exclusively selected players based in the country with Leinster, Munster and Ulster providing the entirety of the 26-man squad that is looking to pull off some impressive results.

Followers of school rugby will recognise several names in the Italy squad with City of Oxford College’s Lorenzo Casilio, Sedbergh’s Nicola Bozzo and Sam Luciano Ferrari, who studies at the Samuel Whitbread Academy, all set to take to the field.

WHAT THEY SAID

England Men U18 head coach Jonathan Pendlebury: “We were pleased with the way the team played against Wales recently and I’m sure this group will take a lot from that as they head into the first game of the festival.

“This will be a great opportunity for the group to spend ten days together, to cement relationships, learn from one another and take something from the experience that they can put into practice either back at their club or when they next meet in future England age group and representative environments and traveling or touring abroad.

“The squad is really looking forward to the festival which is able to take place for the first time since the pandemic began. Events such as these are a really important development experience for players at this age and we’re really pleased it’s able to take place again.”

Scotland Men U18 head coach Ross Miller: “To narrow the squad down to 26 players has been tough. The 39 players who were in our extended playing group put their hands up for selection and

although we couldn’t select everyone all the players have worked hard and are showing a continued appetite for self-development which is an important part of the programme.

“The standard of players we’ve been able to select from was very high. They have all come into the programme with a good all-round skill set and rugby knowledge which is testament to the development they’ve had in their club and school environments as well as the FOSROC Scottish Rugby Regional Championship series.”

Wales Men U18 head coach Matt O’Brien: “It is international rugby so we want to win games, but we are taking a fair few boys that weren’t capped in the first game against England so it is another opportunity to get a few new caps so the boys who have already had that experience can help those new boys along.

“I think the growth in the players from when they first came in has already been massive. Yes, results will be part of it but performances and the improvement of the players on and off the field will be a big thing for us as well.”
