How revenge tourism is boosting prospects for India’s tourism sector post Covid

Country’s tourism industry is starting to benefit from pent-up demand, leading to a surge in domestic travel.

Visitors enjoy leisure time at the Gateway of India, one of Mumbai's main tourist attractions. India’s tourism industry is projected to contribute $512bn to the country's GDP by 2028, according to a government investment agency. EPA

At Mumbai’s Gateway of India, a historic monument by the Arabian Sea, visitors jostle for a good spot to take selfies and snapshots. Most of the tourists are from other parts of the country and the scene is in stark contrast to the coronavirus lockdown of 2020, when the attraction was deserted due to strict Covid curbs.

However, with restrictions largely lifted now, India’s Covid-battered tourism industry is starting to benefit from pent-up demand. This has led to a surge in domestic trips, in a phenomenon known as “ revenge travel ” — although international tourism in the country has yet to recover fully.

“From a time when we were literally shutting down our businesses, we've seen sort of historic highs of demand rates and occupancies,” says Vibhas Prasad, director of the Leisure Hotels Group, a luxury resort chain with 27 properties in northern India.

“So, the leisure market has bounced back pretty much across the country. I think domestic tourism will remain on a strong wicket.”

India’s tourism industry contributed $178 billion, or about 5.8 per cent, to the country’s gross domestic product in 2021, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council. This will more than double to $512 billion by 2028, according to Invest India, a government investment promotion agency. The tourism sector provides about 137 million jobs.

Due to the impact of the pandemic, only 1.54 million foreign tourists arrived in India in 2021, Ministry of Tourism data shows. That compares with 10.93 million tourists in 2019. Tourists are steadily returning, though, with estimates that India received 2.1 million foreign visitors in the first six months of this year.

Domestic tourism also took a beating during the pandemic, with local tourist visits sharply declining to 677 million in 2021 compared with 2.3 billion in 2019. Although domestic visitor numbers for this year have yet to be released, industry sources point to a huge increase in tourist numbers.

indian tourism revenue

“The travel industry is getting back on its feet and is witnessing a robust recovery,” says Vikas Sharma, chief executive of Encalm Hospitality, an airport hospitality company.

“People are now keen to explore new destinations and are venturing out of their homes with a vengeance."

Demand for trips within India is also being boosted by delays in securing visas to some overseas destinations and the cost of a holiday abroad surging.

“Domestic travel has increased as international travel is becoming a hassle with various restrictions and procedures,” says Chander K Baljee, chairman and managing director at Royal Orchid Hotels, which has more than 75 properties across the country.

“Many people are not travelling due to the high fares and hotel rates across Europe and other countries. Indians are now discovering the value of domestic travel. So, in my view, domestic tourism is here to stay.”

As a result of a strong demand, Royal Orchid Hotels' net profit in the second quarter to the end of September surged fivefold in the current fiscal year, according to Mr Baljee.

The company's performance is “better than pre-Covid levels and we expect it to grow further”, he says.

“We are experiencing through-the-roof bookings across the country while some of our properties are booked out for the year,” he adds.

Reflecting a spike in domestic travel, IndiaLends, an online marketplace for loans and credit cards, says that demand for travel loans has shot up 10 times in the past year and crossed pre-pandemic levels.

In a country of about 1.4 billion people, which has an expanding middle class, the domestic travel market has huge potential for much further growth in the coming years, industry experts say.

Even before the pandemic, the numbers of international tourists were widely considered to be below India's potential given the size of the country and the vast range of attractions it offers — from forts to mountains and beaches to jungles — as well as its rich culture and cuisine.

The recovery in foreign tourist arrivals in India still has a long way to go.

“Internationally, due to the geopolitical uncertainty, we currently have guests coming in from a few countries only … this foreign travel currently contributes to only 5 per cent of our overall business,” says Nikhil Kapur, co-founder and director of Atmantan Wellness Centre, a luxury resort in Mulshi, near Mumbai.

He remains hopeful these numbers will improve in the coming months, and says that demand from Indians means that the business “has crossed all our previous benchmarks” compared to before Covid.

“While inbound international travel has picked up significantly, it still hasn’t reached pre-pandemic levels,” says Haitham Mattar, managing director, India, Middle East and Africa at IHG Hotels & Resorts, one of the world's largest hotel chains, with brands including InterContinental and Holiday Inn.

In the second quarter of 2022, the group's total revenue in India exceeded 2019 levels, while occupancy levels are up 2 per cent on 2019 levels at 75 per cent, Mr Mattar says.

“Domestic travel facilitated significant business recovery [after] Covid restrictions were lifted,” he says.

“In 2020, at the peak of the pandemic, we witnessed the lowest occupancy and revenue in the history of our industry.”

However, there are promising signs for international tourism recovery in India, analysts say.

“We believe the sector is on an upswing,” says Shobit Singhal, research analyst at Anand Rathi, a Mumbai-based stock trading and advisory company.

“Rising inbound tourism and a rise in the number of government delegations and international conferences augurs well for the sector.”

During the pandemic, many hospitality companies evolved and adapted to a shift in trends, and some are continuing to reap the rewards from this.

“We found that due to extended stays such as 'workations', our guests’ needs evolved into one for a branded homestays with standardised service,” says Ramit Sethi, founder of Seclude Luxury Homestay, which has luxury home-style boutique properties in locations including Kerala, Goa and Shimla — important tourist destinations in India.

“This was an idea we were already envisioning, which got accelerated during Covid and is a trend we've witnessed that is still in play today.”

As travel picks up, India’s airline industry is buoyant too.

“After nearly two years of navigating one of the worst crises ever faced by the industry, Indian aviation has been showing signs of strong recovery from early 2022 with a consistent upswing in demand for both domestic and international travel,” a representative for Vistara told The National .

The airline, which is a joint venture between Tata Group and Singapore Airlines, said it is expanding its domestic and international routes, recently having added the city of Jaipur in the north Indian state of Rajasthan to its network.

The country's festive and wedding season in this quarter is also helping to fuel demand.

“As the peak travel season continues, passenger traffic across our network has significantly increased, majorly driven by visiting friends and relatives, and leisure travel,” a Vistara representative said.

Such trends are boosting the outlook for the South Asian country’s tourism industry.

“India’s tourism industry is now experiencing a positive increase [and] during the second quarter of this year, our bookings at Wyndham were as high as 700 per cent, compared to the number of bookings at the same time last year,” says Nikhil Sharma, regional director for Eurasia, Wyndham Hotels and Resorts.

“This positive momentum makes us hopeful.”

India’s Travel Spending: ‘Fast-Growing Pools of First-Time Tourists’

Bulbul Dhawan , Skift

May 31st, 2024 at 7:48 AM EDT

Indian travelers are becoming an attractive source market, a McKinsey says. And a boom in the domestic travel market is leading to "substantial investments."

Bulbul Dhawan

India is becoming a fast-growing source of outbound tourism, according to a report by consulting firm McKinsey and Company.

The report reiterated McKinsey’s earlier projection of India becoming the fourth-largest domestic travel market in terms of spending by 2030 – it currently ranks sixth.

“They are developing fast-growing pools of first-time tourists,” the report said.

Indian travelers have reached a new peak in overseas spending . Data from India’s central bank showed that Indians spent $31.7 billion overseas in the 2023-24 financial year. About 54% of that amount was on travel, or $17 billion.

In a report released last year , Booking.com and McKinsey projected that travel spending by Indians would rise from $150 billion in 2019 to $410 billion by 2030.

Countries such as Thailand, Sri Lanka , and South Africa have eased visa requirements for Indian travelers. The UAE, Saudi Arabia, Mauritius, and Turkey are also looking at India as an important source market for tourism and are stepping up marketing activities.

Domestic Travel Boom

Domestic travel makes up the bulk of travel spending in India, the McKinsey report said, and Indian airlines and hotels are making “substantial investments” to meet demand.

IndiGo last year placed the largest single purchase order in commercial aviation when it ordered 500 A320Neo-family jets. Air India placed orders for a total of 470 aircraft with Airbus and Boeing last year. Domestic carriers such as Akasa Air and SpiceJet are also expanding their networks within India and outside.

Meanwhile, hotel companies are ramping up their portfolios in India. The report added that the development focus has shifted from major metropolises to smaller cities .

Indian Hotels Company (IHCL) has a portfolio of over 200 operational hotels in the country, and more than 90 hotels are in its development pipeline. The company aims to open 25 hotels in the 2024-25 financial year . It has also announced its decision to revive its Gateway brand to cater to emerging markets in metros and Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities.

IHG Hotels and Resorts is planning to double its presence in India to 100 operating hotels over the next five years.

Hilton believes that 2024 is going to be its best year yet in India, according to India country head Zubin Saxena . With 26 operational hotels in India, the company is looking to double its portfolio in the next 3 to 4 years. It is also looking at an aggressive expansion in terms of the Indian markets where it operates, including emerging Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets.

Accor, in 2023, signed a record 11 hotels in India and opened six properties. The company plans to open nine hotels this year. However, CEO Sébastien Bazin believes that India is an untapped market , stating that the top five hotel operators in India collectively have less than 1,000 hotels.

Challenges For India

The McKinsey report studied the cities of Mumbai and Delhi to assess the potential risks that these destinations deal with in terms of tourism.

The report noted that while Mumbai has the lowest tourism density relative to its population in the cities it studied, visitors have been experiencing “long waits for entrance to attractions and a plethora of guides and vendors competing for attention.” Road traffic is also a major issue.

Mumbai is at a risk of an overloaded infrastructure due to tourism. This could lead to a negative impact on the visitor experience in a city where the local economy depends considerably on tourism.

On the other hand, Delhi is at a risk of having a negative visitor experience because of threat to its culture and heritage.

No Muziris Biennale means revenue dip for Kochi’s tourism business

 Kochi-Muziris Biennale

KOCHI: The Kochi-Muziris Biennale has been facing troubles since the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020. Now, the situation is such that the conduct of the sixth edition of India’s largest contemporary art exhibition scheduled to be held later this year is under a cloud owing to the unavailability of a permanent venue and, above all, fund crunch. The news that the Biennale might be cancelled this year has hit the tourism industry and local businesses in Kochi, which earn handsomely during the three months of event, the hardest.

The Biennale has garnered wide acclaim since its inception in 2012 and is considered to be one of the top 10 art exhibitions in the world, indirectly contributing to Kochi’s transformation into a cultural tourism destination.

“The Biennale gave a new dimension to Kochi and is the lone exhibition in India with quality, magnitude, and global acknowledgement. It will be a huge loss to Kerala if it is not conducted,” said Jose Dominic of CGH Earth Group.

“Several tourists are planning and scheduling their visits to Kerala around the event. The Biennale also brought everyone’s attention to another asset of Kerala – its heritage,” Dominic said, adding that the old streets of Fort Kochi and Mattancherry are the lone reason why tourists visit Kochi.

“The art exhibition benefited the local community, and they began referring to it as ‘Nammude Biennale’ (Our Biennale). More than 50% of the income of the local community in Fort Kochi and Mattancherry, which includes homestays, eateries, local vendors, handicrafts, autorickshaw, taxi drivers and others, is dependent on tourism,” said Dominic.

M P Sivadathan, president of Kerala Homestay and Tourism Society (K-HATS) said, “We have been on tenterhooks post Covid. Rumours were rife that Kochi will lose Biennale. Lack of a venue was the main issue. It had been a long-pending demand that the event be allotted a permanent venue, but it did not happen.”

He said the three months of the Biennale provide a big boost to the revenue of homestays. “Participating artists mostly prefer to stay in ‘low-fare’ accommodations like homestays. Sometimes, they book the facilities for a month or more. Even after giving a discount, a homestay owner can earn around Rs 60,000,” said Sivadathan.

He said the Biennale also generates employment opportunities for locals, who, among other things, get jobs as artists’ helpers. “The Biennale was a business ecosystem and tragically, we have lost it,” Sivadathan said.

Rizwan Sheikh, who works at a souvenir shop in Fort Kochi, said the spike in tourist arrivals during the Biennale months directly benefits airlines, railways, roadways, autorickshaws, and ferries. It also helps general stores, tour operators, and clothes and souvenir shops, he said.

indian tourism revenue

“The Biennale has created a unique economic zone that supports the tourism sector and brings money to the local community,” said Johann Kuruvilla, a history enthusiast who runs the Kochi Heritage Project.

Meanwhile, the Biennale’s likely cancellation has also upset the plans of the Kerala Travel Mart (KTM). “The Biennale is a huge selling point for us when it comes to promoting Kochi and Kerala. It not only projects art, but also the state’s culture and heritage. The state government needs to take proactive steps to ensure such events, which have gained global recognition, are held as per the calendar. It doesn’t happen though. Some things never change,” KTM president Jose Pradeep told TNIE.

Meanwhile, Johann Kuruvilla emphasised the need to preserve the heritage property of Aspinwall, the Biennale’s main venue. “If the property is not preserved, it will be a huge loss for the government. Tourists visit Kochi to see heritage properties. If those are not preserved, people will stop coming here, and it will affect state’s economy,” Kuruvilla said.

Sivadathan agreed. “None is bothered about the heritage sites in Kochi. The top brass in the tourism department is unaware of the historical importance of the buildings and structures in Fort Kochi. Everything is slowly fading away,” he said.

Shamseer, an autorickshaw driver in Fort Kochi, said after the pandemic, Biennale helped him improve his finances. “The last Biennale was held from December 2022 to April 2023. The four months helped me improve my financial situation as several tourists came to the city,” Shamseer said.

What’s at stake

More than 50% of the income of the local community in Fort Kochi and Mattancherry is dependednt on tourism

Biennale also generates employment opportunities for locals, who, among other things, get jobs as artists’ helpers

The spike in number of vistors benefits airlines, railways, roadways, autorickshaws, and ferries

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky’s tourism industry stayed on its record-setting pace in 2023, generating an economic impact approaching $14 billion while sustaining nearly 100,000 jobs, Gov. Andy Beshear said Thursday.

Travelers visiting the Bluegrass State last year spent $9.7 billion as tourism continued its post-pandemic momentum as a key contributor to Kentucky’s growing economy, the Democratic governor said.

“We’re welcoming people to our new Kentucky home, one filled with opportunity and prosperity,” Beshear said during his weekly news conference. “Where we want you to come see what we have to offer, and then we want you to move your family here to be a part of it.”

The governor joined tourism leaders at Castle & Key Distillery to celebrate the second straight record-breaking year for tourism in Kentucky. In 2022, the tourism sector bounced back from the COVID-19 pandemic to generate an economic impact of nearly $13 billion and was responsible for 91,668 jobs.

Last year was even better, with the statewide tourism industry producing $13.8 billion in economic impact and the sector sustained 95,222 jobs, Beshear said. The study by Tourism Economics determined that 79.3 million travelers visited Kentucky in 2023, up 4.5% from the prior year, he said.

Kentucky’s attractions include horse farms and bourbon distilleries as well as outdoor adventure, history, arts and cultural draws. Kentucky is also home to Mammoth Cave National Park.

Bourbon tourism is flourishing, with attendance surpassing 2.5 million visitors last year along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail and the Kentucky Bourbon Trail Craft Tour, which showcases smaller distilleries. Bourbon tourists tend to spend more and stay longer compared to other attractions, the bourbon industry says.

“With distilleries now in 42 counties, bourbon tourism is resurrecting Main Streets across the commonwealth and pouring much-needed revenue into local coffers. And there’s more to come,” said Eric Gregory, president of the Kentucky Distillers’ Association.

Spirit makers have invested big sums into new or expanded visitor centers to play up the industry’s heritage and allow guests to soak in the sights and smells of bourbon-making.

Communities across Kentucky registered robust tourism numbers last year.

Beshear said tourism generated $4.2 billion of economic impact last year in Jefferson County, which includes Louisville, the state’s largest city. In Boone, Campbell and Kenton counties — just south of Cincinnati — the combined economic impact of tourism was $2.1 billion, he said. It was $1.6 billion in Fayette County, home to Lexington, the state’s second-largest city. In Warren County, tourism brought in $477 million of economic impact, and in McCracken County it generated $319 million.

State Tourism Commissioner Mike Mangeot thanked tourism officials statewide for their role in the sector’s success, along with the thousands of leisure and hospitality industry workers. The tour guides, restaurant workers, hotel desk clerks and others are “the frontline ambassadors,” he said.

7 misconceptions that Indian tourists have about Moscow: Survey

A new survey has revealed the most common myths among Indian tourists about Moscow, the Russian capital. From being cold to expensive and even locals not talking English, the survey has shown a wide variety of misconceptions. The survey conducted by Intourist, a company with 95 years of background in the inbound tourism market in Russia, among tourists from India who visited Moscow, asked them about their primary expectations for Moscow and the difference from their actual experience. The poll results were used to form a list of popular myths about Moscow, most of which were successfully debunked in the process.

“When a tourist arrives in Moscow, the first thing that comes to a foreigner’s mind is probably the Red Square, all covered in snow (and maybe a layer of red caviar on a giant piece of bread, thanks to the latest Slavic girl trend). Although it is a pretty memorable image, there’s so much more that the Russian capital can give to its visitors”, commented Aleksandr Musikhin, the general director of Intourist and inbound tourism committee head of the Association of Tour Operators of Russia (ATOR).

Myth : Moscow is cold Reality : There are four seasons, and the summer is very warm There are four distinct seasons to fit any taste beginning April. Moscow spring is probably the loveliest of them all with its fresh air, blossoming trees and cafeteria terraces opening all over the city. Summer in the city is usually hot, with a great choice of refreshing activities: you can visit an open pool like Chaika or Luzhniki, explore any of the renovated parks with a glass of lemonade, or even spend a day at the beach of Serebryany Bor. Sure, winters in Moscow are cold, but thanks to well-adjusted heating systems both in the buildings and public transport, freezing isn’t really an option.

Myth : Moscow is too Soviet Reality : Moscow’s architecture is a beautiful eclectic mixture of nearly a thousand years of history If you take some time to look around the city, a couple of beautiful landmarks from different times will appear just around the corner. Besides Soviet architecture, there are buildings dated with 12-19 centuries along the ‘bas-reliefs’ from the art nouveau period and shining skyscrapers of the Moscow City cluster — all for aesthetic pleasure.

Myth : Moscow is one of the most expensive cities in the world Reality : There are options for a trip with any budget According to the EIU rating of 2021, Moscow didn’t even make the top 100 of the annual rich cities list. There are lots of accommodation options, eateries and shopping establishments to fit your desires and financial possibilities: from Stoleshnikov Lane with its boutiques to vast malls such as Europolis or Atrium, where the clothing stores are open side by side with fast-food restaurants, beauty salons, cinemas, playgrounds etc.

Myth : There is no decent food in Moscow, except for borscht and pelmeni Reality : Moscow is full of the high-quality restaurants with Russian and world cuisines Setting aside the fact that there’s more to the traditional Russian cuisine than you would first expect, Moscow can offer a hungry tourist a wide range of food options: there are halal and kosher, vegetarian and vegan, European and Asian restaurants all over the city. A homesick Indian tourist can also easily find an authentic eating place serving a ‘Thali’ or a ‘Dosa’ or other Indian vegetarian options.

Myth : People in Moscow are mean and unfriendly Reality : Moscovites a warm-hearted and helpful There is a strong stereotype that pictures Russians as people who never smile. Thankfully, any public place in Moscow will prove it wrong in mere seconds. Big city people may not be keen on showing emotions to strangers, yet it usually takes a short dialogue for a change of heart, and most of the people passing by will gladly show you the directions or give a helpful tip if asked.

Myth : Moscow is unsafe Reality : Crime rate in Moscow is lower than in many European tourist cities. Moscow is an extremely hi-tech city. Last year, Moscow became the leader among BRICS cities in terms of technological and spatial development. Moscow's high technological progress also means a high level of development of security systems. Moscow has a "smart city" system – outdoor CCTV cameras and a face recognition system on the streets and in the subway. According to some estimates, the crime rate in Moscow is lower than in many European tourist cities. Being in Moscow you don't have to worry about your safety.

Myth : Nobody speaks English in Moscow Reality : Young generation of Moscovites speaks English fluently Travelling nowadays is a popular hobby among millennials and Gen Z, so the majority of young Moscow residents speak fluent English. Foreign languages are taught in schools and universities, with the addition of online courses and countless apps for personal studies that help to maintain speaking skills — so be sure that you will find help when needed. And if you are not much of a people person, all navigation in Moscow public transport is dubbed in English, so you won’t even have to ask for help since the tourist infrastructure is well-developed.
