Muslims now make up one of the fastest-growing segments of the global travel industry. In response, hotels and tour operators are increasingly trying to meet their dietary and religious needs.

For one of the fastest-growing sectors of the global travel industry, there is no pork on the hotel dinner menus. There are flights with no alcohol on the drink carts, resorts with separate swimming pools for men and women, and daily itineraries with built-in break times for the five daily calls to prayer.

Since 2016, the number of Muslim travelers has grown nearly 30 percent, and a recent joint study by Mastercard and Crescent Rating , a research group that tracks halal-friendly travel, projects that over the next decade that sector’s contribution to the global economy will jump to $300 billion from $180 billion. With a population that is disproportionately young, educated and upwardly mobile, they are one of the fastest-growing demographics on the global tourism scene.

But this wasn’t always the case.

In 2015 , Soumaya Hamdi went roadtripping through Asia with her husband and her then 4-month-old baby. The trio visited Singapore and Malaysia, and then caught a flight to South Korea and on to Japan. The trip was thrilling, but Ms. Hamdi and her husband, who are both observant Muslims, found the daily search for halal-certified food a difficult one.

Ms. Hamdi, who is based in London, began blogging about the best Muslim-friendly restaurants she found, as well as prayer facilities and sites that were particularly welcoming for a family with a young baby. Those musings turned into Halal Travel Guide , an online platform offering tips, recommendations and curated itineraries for Muslim travelers.

Her timing was right.

“In Europe the Muslim community is now in its third or fourth generation. They are educated and have good paying jobs,” said Ufuk Secgin, chief marketing officer for Halal Booking , a Muslim-focused vacation search engine. “For the first generation, their idea of a holiday was visiting the family in the home country. This has changed.”

At ITB Asia this October, a leading travel show held in Singapore, organizers partnered with two halal travel authorities, Crescent Rating and Halal Trip , to offer specialized panel discussions and showcases targeting the estimated 156 million Muslims who will book travel between now and 2020.

At the heart of much of the discussion was matters of the belly. For Muslim travelers, “the number one factor is good quality halal food,” Ms. Hamdi said in an email exchange. “I’m not talking about curry or biryani — I’m talking about authentic local food that is halal. After that, it’s usually prayer facilities.”

Tourists’ global demand for halal food has grown so much, in fact, that Have Halal Will Travel , a Singapore-based online community for Muslim travelers, has also partnered with ITB Asia with a three-hour conference and special booth space focusing on foodie-centric outreach to the Muslim tourism sector.

Like Halal Travel Guide , Have Halal Will Travel was founded in 2015. Today, their content reaches 9.1 million users each month, according to their founder, Mikhael Goh. Mr. Goh dreamed up the site with three friends while studying abroad in Seoul; he found himself frustrated on a daily basis with a lack of information about where to find quality halal food.

“We were thinking, why is it in 2015, when there is Yelp and TripAdvisor and so many popular apps and services to tell you where to eat and where to travel, why on earth is there so little information for Muslims?” Mr. Goh said in a phone interview. “Not just about food — yes, halal food is the basis of a lot of things, but also about safety and prayer. There was a general lack of information out there and the information that did exist was so fragmented.”

Only a handful of years later, that gap in the market is now teeming with niche sites, many of them written specifically for young Muslim women. At Passport and Plates , the Los Angeles-based blogger Sally Elbassir chronicles her global foodie adventures where pork and alcohol are always off the menu; at Arabian Wanderess , Esra Alhamal writes about traveling as a female, Muslim millennial on a budget; and at the popular Muslim Travel Girl , run by the Bulgaria-born, Britain-based Elena Nikolova, readers can learn about Muslim-friendly honeymoon resorts with private pools and get tips for a D.I.Y. Umrah (Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca).

Many of the bloggers interviewed for this article echoed the same sentiment: Their goal is not just to make it easier for Muslim travelers to find food, prayer spaces and alcohol-free activities that appeal to them. It’s also to support those travelers to branch out of their comfort zones and feel empowered exploring the world.

“We specialize in pushing people to non-Muslim majority countries,” said Mr. Goh. “The most popular destinations we work on are Japan and Korea. Our audience is young — 25 to 30 years old — and very influenced by K-pop and Instagram, so we write a lot about how welcoming those places are.”

Ms. Hamdi of Halal Travel Guide agreed. “We encourage Muslims to seek culturally immersive travel experiences outside of the traditional Muslim-friendly destinations such as Dubai and Morocco,” she said. “Muslims are looking for added value to their trips — from private beaches where women can bathe without men to disturb them, and more than this, trips that offer the Muslim traveler the chance to experience something completely different.”

Spending by Muslim travelers is expected to rise to US$220 billion by 2020, with the number of Muslim tourists growing to 156 million from 121 million in 2016. That’s according to the Global Muslim Travel Index (GTMI) 2017, which was produced by Mastercard and CrescentRating, a ‘halal-friendly’ travel consultancy.

‘Halal’ tourism is clearly a growing market segment, with Muslim tourists seeking destinations which meet their needs, in terms of diet, dress or rituals. Translated from Arabic, ‘halal’ means permissible in accordance with Islamic teaching. Alcohol, pork, nudity and gambling are off limits.

With a burgeoning middle class and increasing disposable income, many countries – whether Muslim or not – are looking to attract these travelers. Malaysia, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia and Turkey are among the leading Muslim destinations. Singapore, Thailand and the United Kingdom are among the top non-Islamic or OIC (Organization of the Islamic Conference) destinations.

Despite being a predominantly Buddhist country, albeit with a sizeable Muslim population in the south, Thailand has proved to be a popular destination for Muslims, mainly from Indonesia looking for affordable vacations and Thai food. As for the UK, Muslim spending is expected to rise to US$4.1 billion by 2020 even though there has been a spike in Islamophobic assaults following recent terror attacks in London and Manchester.

Adapting to the needs of Muslim travelers

Given the potential of this sector, it’s important for the hospitality industry to adapt to changing halal requirements to meet the needs of Muslim tourists. According to CrescentRating, hotels and restaurants should offer halal food at the very least. A destination is then seen as increasingly attractive for Muslim travelers – as assessed in the GTMI ranking – based on the availability of prayer facilities, Muslim-friendly washrooms and Ramadan-related offerings. While many airports are now offering halal food and prayer rooms, some still lack wash or ablution facilities.

Shaping the future with technology

In addition to more traditional online travel agencies or OTAs such as booking.com or TripAdvisor, Muslim-friendly platforms are springing up. Take for instance Halalbooking.com , a London-based market place for halal tourist accommodation that is expecting to achieve revenues of at least one billion pounds by the end of 2021.

Peer-to-peer platforms are also emerging. Bookhalalhomes.com has become the world’s leading portal for halal accommodation rentals. It differentiates itself from Airbnb by guaranteeing halal-certified services such as halal food and designated prayer rooms.

Smartphone apps are also being developed. The Tourism Authority of Thailand has launched an app that helps Muslim travelers find halal products and services. It provides information about prayer times, food options and sightseeing tours. Another app, HalalTrip , offers information related to more than 65 destinations worldwide. It generates revenue by selling suitable tour packages, whether it’s experiencing Great White Sharks in South Africa, culture and history in Spain, or shopping in Dubai.

Compared to more established western OTAs though, halal tourism e-commerce is still in its infancy. As we’ve outlined, however, it’s a growing market that needs to be served. Technology will continue to shape the growth of the sector by allowing hoteliers, restaurateurs and others to demonstrate that they are sensitive to halal requirements.

How innovation affects demand

With spending by Muslim travelers on course to reach US$220 billion by 2020, and Islam the fastest-growing religion in the world, Muslim tourists are definitely some of the most important customers in the travel market.

Pull factors such as family-friendly and Muslim-friendly services are important, as is halal awareness. Where safety concerns and basic halal requirements are met, Muslim tourism will continue to grow.

As for technology, halal tech firms appear to have established a first-mover advantage. But it’s only a matter of time before major western OTAs enter and seek to dominate this promising market.

The model with three additional "needs" was published in 2019. Termed as "Muslim Traveler Faith-Based Service Needs 2.0," it combines the original six needs with the newly identified ones, offering a comprehensive guide for travel stakeholders. This new model reflects Muslim consumer behavior's complex and evolving nature, shaped by traditional faith-based needs and contemporary global influences.

It provides a roadmap for service development, a framework for academic research, and a nuanced context for media narratives. The global Halal market has the potential of serving the world’s 1.6 billion Muslims, and is often spoken as the world’s “Third One Billion” market alongside India and China. With an average annual growth rate of 1.5 per cent, it is projected that Muslims will make up 26.4 per cent of the world’s total projected population of 8.3 billion in 2030, with a median age of 24. The global Halal market is driven by values and trust. With many of the values having a universal appeal, the Halal market also has the potential of serving the remaining 5.4 billion consumers, if correctly understood.

Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world. With the current pace of growth, the global halal market can only be expected to increase. With information being readily available now, the Muslim consumer is more informed. Therefore, the need for knowing the nature, source, production, distribution, and finance of products and services is becoming more of a realisation now than it was ever before.

Muslims share of world population

The term ‘halal’ has seated its position on the global marketplace. Traditionally leaning more towards food and consumption items, halal now encompasses a wide variety of sectors including cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, clothing, financial services, logistics, and even hospitality. Consumers nowadays not only wish to know the nature of what they eat but also of what they wear, what they put on their skin, the type of travelling ease and hospitality they receive, as well as the method by which products and services are delivered to them.

Food & Beverage

The halal food market has a strong potential for growth. When compared to the global food market size, it is obviously small. It should be noted that the halal food markets are not similar everywhere. Each market has unique attributes through their culture, location, income per capita, and other factors. Therefore, as the late Irfan Sungkar mentioned in The Halal Journal May/June 2009 issue, a one-size-fits-all strategy simply cannot work. Product adaptability in each target market needs to be considered as consumer requirements differ across the regions.

Cosmetics & Personal Care

The consumer requirements for cosmetics and personal care on the other hand, seem to converge rather than diverge across different regions. Halal cosmetics can be seen as the next emerging sector in the halal industry after food and financial services.

Data from the Institute of Personal Care Science of Australia show that the global cosmetics market is worth USD334 billion and the global halal cosmetics market is estimated at USD13 billion annually. The International Trade and Industry Deputy Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir has stated that 25 per cent of the cosmetics sold in the Middle East are halal certified. He also added that the local halal cosmetics industry in Malaysia has contributed 10 to 20 per cent to the total local cosmetics market in recent years.

Halal cosmetics have consumers from a variety of backgrounds who find the cosmetics appealing due to a range of reasons. Some prefer halal cosmetics due to it being animal cruelty free; others choose halal cosmetics because there are no harmful chemicals that irritate their skin or alcohol that would dry up their skin. The point to note here is that halal cosmetics is appearing to secure a firm place in the market due to its assurance of quality and appeal to a wide range of consumers regardless of religious backgrounds.

The founder of the first halal cosmetics company in Europe, Dr. Mah Hussain-Gambles, said that the halal cosmetics industry has also benefitted from the notion of eco-friendly consciousness among consumers. She mentioned that 75 per cent of Saaf Pure Skincare’s customers are non-Muslims who wish for cosmetics products that do not harm the body in the long- or short-term.

Another sector where consumers are questioning the source of their purchase is the pharmaceutical industry. The US based provider of information, services and technology for the healthcare industry, IMS Health, reported in 2009 that the expected growth of the global market for pharmaceuticals will be USD300 billion over the next five years, reaching USD1.1 trillion in 2014. An annual growth rate of four to six per cent is forecasted. In light of these statistics, we foresee a significant demand for the halal pharmaceutical industry.

The demand has been growing over the years and as a result, Malaysia launched the world’s first standard for halal pharmaceuticals in early 2011 named the  Malaysian Standard MS 2424:2010 (P): Halal Pharmaceuticals: General Guidelines. This standard was created to cater to the pharmaceuticals industry’s supply chain from processing to handling, packaging, labelling, distribution, storage and display of medicines and health supplements.

The halal industry has also infused its way into the apparel sector. According to the French fashion university Esmod in Dubai, the global Muslim fashion industry would be worth USD96 billion if half of the world’s 1.6 billion Muslims spend just USD120 a year on clothing. The main selling point of Halal apparel would be its modesty, eco-friendliness, and sustainability factors. With the name halal promising the assurance of quality, many companies are using it to their advantage to start a trend.

One such company named as Zazzle, is using halal branding printed on t-shirts, bags, and even kitchen aprons. Zaidi Zainuddin and Nuraini Ariffin, founders of Active Attire, are examples of entrepreneurs who have put a different spin on the Muslim fashion industry. Creating swimwear in line with Muslim beliefs and values, Active Attire not only appeals to Muslim consumers but also reduces swimming facilities cost by 30 per cent due to less amount of hair particles getting stuck in the swimming pools’ filtration system.

Tourism & Hospitality

The industry sector of halal tourism and hospitality offers a complete experience to its Muslim consumers. Starting from a plane ride that offers halal food, halal tourism and hospitality also includes hotels where no alcohol is served and males and females are provided separate spas and swimming pool facilities.

Al Jawhara Gardens Hotel established in 2006, has seen an annual 10 per cent increase in its growth. “There is a lot of demand for the Islamic hospitality concept in the UAE and the surrounding GCC countries,” said Khalid Kamal, Business Development Manager at Al Jawhara. “Nearly 80 per cent of our guests are non-Muslims who stayed with us once to test our services and found no difference in standards compared to other hotels,” he said.

To many, halal hospitality may seem attractive as above all it provides a cultural experience to the consumers as well as a safe family environment.

Halal logistics is another sector of the global halal market that has the potential to enormous growth. Halal logistics refers to the attention to every detail involved in the halal supply chain from ‘farm to fork’. With globalisation on the rise, the logistics of products is readily carried out across national borders. Creating an international halal logistics standard is therefore of great important.

Mr. Gopal R, Vice President, Transportation & Logistics Practice, Asia Pacific and Country Head for Malaysia at Frost & Sullivan has mentioned that the Malaysian logistics industry is forecasted to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.6 per cent to reach RM196.5 billion in 2015.

Aside from the many industry sectors of the Halal market, it is also important to understand the constant need of innovation. The global Halal market is said to be worth USD2 trillion. As such, research into making this market ‘better, faster, cheaper’ cannot be ignored.

The Asia Pacific region has been quick in understanding this point. Thailand has already developed a Halal Science Centre (HSC) and Malaysia is on its way with the Deputy President of the Malaysian Islamic Chamber of Commerce (MICC), Tan Sri Muhammad Ali Hashim, stating that a Halal Science Centre is needed in Malaysia in order to tap into the opportunities the halal industry offers. These opportunities when correctly understood and properly marketed, can pave the way for a more balanced economy.

This year, the World Halal Summit (WHS) will bring more issues and concerns to the table in its six subject-focused conferences that are set to be intensive and empowering dialogues with influential speakers to map out future global Halal developments. ATM to host first global halal summit – experts from the Muslim travel world to highlight growth opportunities and positive economic impact

Reed Travel Exhibitions, organiser of the annual Arabian Travel Market (ATM) showcase in Dubai, which will take place at the Dubai World Trade Centre from 24-27 April 2017, has announced that it will host the first ATM Global Halal Tourism Summit as part of its line-up of special focus events.

The one-day summit, scheduled to take place on Wednesday 26th April 2017 on the Global Stage, will feature three interactive seminar sessions covering the big picture, halal destination strategies and how to sell halal travel, led by leading Muslim travel industry experts including Faeez Fadhlillah, Co-Founder & CEO, Salam Standard & Tripfez; Nabeel Shariff, Founder and Director of Serendipity Tailormade and Luxury Halal Travel.

A 2014 report by Thomson Reuters valued the global halal food and lifestyle sector at US$1.8 trillion and this is expected to reach US$2.6 trillion by 2020; That figure was supported by research commissioned by the Government of Dubai, and produced by Thomson Reuters in partnership with DinarStandard, which found that halal tourism represents 11.6% of global tourism expenditure, estimating the sector would be worth US$238 billion by 2019.

The summit announcement follows a special roundtable session about halal tourism, organised by Reed Travel Exhibitions, which took place earlier this year in Dubai. A prominent group of hoteliers, destination management companies and tourism professionals took part in the event, with 70% of participants agreeing that there is a need for a global convention on halal tourism.

Halal tourism is defined as the provision of services and facilities that address the specific needs of Islamic travellers, such as halal food, dry hotels and separate male/female facilities. However, it can mean different things to different people, thus creating both challenges and opportunities for the regional and global tourism sector when it comes to servicing the needs of halal tourists.

“In fact, 90% of our panelists believed that there is a huge gap in the tourism market for halal cuisine, which is especially relevant as 80% also predicted a significant increase in the percentage of inbound halal business over the next five years. Launching this summit therefore presents a timely opportunity for the industry to come together to discuss opportunities, share success stories and create awareness,” said Simon Press, Senior Exhibition Director, Arabian Travel Market.

Based on this, it is seen that the tourism sector globally contributes to macro variables such as GDP, economic growth, and reducing unemployment. The development of tourism and travel globally is inseparable from the ease of access to information and transportation in visits by tourists, both foreign and domestic.

One potential market that is predicted to increase from year to year is the visit of Muslim tourists. This is as mentioned in the 2018 GMTI Report, that the Muslim tourist market share is growing fast, even predicted to increase USD 220 billion in 2020 and is expected to increase USD 80 billion to USD 300 billion in 2026.

According to the GMTI report (2018), there are seven factors that cause the rapid growth of the global halal tourism sector, including: Muslim population growth, growth in middle income / disposable income Muslims, millennial Muslim population populations, increased access to travel information, increased travel service provider that accommodates Muslim worship needs (Muslim-friendly), Ramadan travel, and travel businesses.

The above factors encourage countries in the world to slowly begin to focus on the development of halal tourism. The development according to GMTI (2018) needs to be focused on four main things, namely easy access, communication, environment, and services.

The halal tourism industry cannot be separated from its supporting industries, or in this case included as a series of entry points. These entry points form a halal tourism value chain consisting of tourism destinations, transportation equipment, hotels and accommodation, restaurants and cafes, as well as travel and tours. 

The tourism industry has interrelated relationships with many industries, both main and supporting. This justifies the magnitude of the multiplier effect of the development of the tourism sector on the economy. Especially in halal tourism, the related industry is certainly a halal, real and financial sector. This simultaneous relationship can make a significant contribution to the development of the Islamic economy in Indonesia. (*)

Halal tourism: Promoting high-quality service

In considering developments in the tourism industry especially in the past 20 years, including the diversity of tourism services and special interest tourism, we find that tourists are looking for new destinations and using new services aligned with their religious beliefs and values. Halal tourism is one such example; and health, physical fitness and mental health are some of its central concerns—tangible effects enriching the soul and spirit as well as comfort of travelers.

Halal tourism is also worthy of attention because a substantial part of tourism markets and destinations is located in the Islamic world. Moreover, 11% of international tourists are Muslims, which has led non-Muslim countries to offer Halal tourism services in order to better position themselves to gain a share of the $200 billion market of Muslim tourists.

Technical standards relevant for Halal tourism recognized by the European Union, the African Union and more than 32 countries throughout the world cover a wide range of areas: accommodations: restaurants; transportation including air, ground, rail, and sea; travel services; cosmetics; foods and drink; lifestyle; marketing and advertising; banking and financing; art and culture; business; insurance; education; stores; hospitals and dentistry; medicine; clothing and textiles; hairdressers and beauty shops; slaughterhouses; recreation sites; handicrafts.

Each aspect of the tourism industry can license its accredited and/or tested products and services and so contribute to interaction among people from different countries as well as from different religious, social and cultural backgrounds.

The study of Halal tourism represents an exciting a new field for understanding and meeting modern human needs.
