Whether you are looking for a quiet vacation or one full of adventure, the Algarve has something to suit everyone’s needs, and there is plenty to do in winter.

Take a romantic sunset boat cruise from Vilamoura or Portimao or enjoy a scenic walk along the stunning ocean paths that line the Algarve coast.

Best Affordable Warm Winter Vacations In United States

Here are 20 of the best reasonably priced warm winter holidays in the USA. They are all located in the southern United States or in Hawaii.

I have included the best free or low priced things to do, inexpensive food or restaurant choices, and good accommodation options that are for the budget traveler. I have also described how best to get to the destination from the airport, especially if there is good public transportation, or whether it is necessary to rent a car. Finally, the expected weather in December, January, February and March is set out to help you with your packing.

Key West, Florida

Key West is the only place in the United States where you can experience the Caribbean vibe. As you unwind with a fruity cocktail and embrace the island time, locals will remind you that you are closer to Cuba in Key West than to Walmart.

While island destinations are usually considered expensive, there are several low-to-no-cost activities to do and affordable accommodation options in Key West making it a reasonably priced warm winter vacation destination in the USA.

First on the list, regardless of your budget, is the famous Nightly Sunset Festival in Mallory Square. Here, you can join tourists and locals for a free carnival-like atmosphere and celebrate the stunning sunset.

Strolling down Duval Street is a fascinating experience, even before you visit historic bars like Sloppy Joe’s, Tony’s, or the Chart Room. These bars were once frequented by famous authors who called Key West home, including Ernest Hemingway, and they helped Jimmy Buffett kickstart his music career.

If you’re a Parrothead, you can’t miss visiting Shrimpboat Sounds, where you’ll find Jimmy Buffett’s studio in the sticker-covered building near the marina. Around the corner, you can grab a sandwich at B.O.’s Fish Shack, reportedly one of Jimmy’s favorite spots.

Best Way To Reach Destination

You can fly directly into Key West, but if you want to experience all of the Florida Keys , fly into Miami and drive down. The 150-mile drive is beautiful and filled with quirky stops and great food.

Average highs in winter are 76 °F with average lows of 68 °F. Most days reach low 80s in the afternoon. There is barely any rain in winter.

Inexpensive Accommodation

However, if you’re looking for a cheap option, there are campgrounds on Stock Island nearby, and a military family camp just 3 miles from Mallory Square if you qualify as a service member.

Big Sur, California

Big Sur is a beautiful section of California’s Coastline located between Monterey and San Simeon where the mountains, quite literally, meet the sea. Big Sur is overflowing with natural beauty from sprawling white sand beaches to lush redwood forests. Big Sur is full of amazing ways to pass the time while hardly spending a dime. It is a fantastic low cost warm winter holiday destination in America.

While Big Sur is most famous as a summer destination, it is worthwhile at any time of year. The moderate central California climate ensures that it never gets too cold, and while there is a higher chance of rain in the winter, there are still plenty of sunny days to be had. 

Pfieffer Big Sur State Park is a can’t-miss destination when visiting Big Sur. You can hike along the Big Sur river to beautiful swimming holes in the Big Sur Gorge, or through lush redwood forests to cascading waterfalls. 

Not far to the south, Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park is home to the picturesque McWay Falls, a stunning 80-foot waterfall that drops directly on the beach. Easy hiking paths throughout the State Park provide not only great views of the falls but of the coastline to the north and south as well. 

Numerous beautiful white sand beaches stretch along the Big Sur coast. Garrapata State Park, Andrew Molera State Park, Pfeiffer State Beach, and Sand Dollar Beach are all excellent places for an afternoon picnic with a view. 

A $10 State Park parking pass will gain you access to all the State parks in Big Sur for the day. 

If you are looking for a great lunch at a decent price, the General Store at the Big Sur River Inn, or a little further to the south, the Big Sur Deli, have great options for picnic lunches. 

You can access Big Sur from the south or north. From the south, you will drive to San Simeon and then head north along Highway 1. From the north, you will head to Carmel and then head south along Highway 1.

If you are flying your best bet will be to fly to Monterey, or possibly San Jose, then rent a car and head south. 

On average, Big Sur only gets 8-9 rainy days per month from December to March (about 3″ of rain each month). Winter temperatures in Big Sur range from the mid 40’s in the evening all the way up to the high 70s during the day. 

Dylan from the Traveling Families Club says, “The best way to stay in Big Sur on a budget is definitely camping. There are a variety of campgrounds throughout the area. Pfieffer Big Sur State Park, Limekiln State Park, Kirk Creek, and Plaskett Creek are all great options. Camping in Big Sur is popular year-round so you will want to try to make your reservations six months in advance. 

If you are planning a last-minute trip you will likely have the best luck at a private campground. Our favorite is Ventanna Campground. 

There are other great camping destinations all within a short drive of Big Sur. 

If you’re not a camper and are still hoping to find accommodation on a budget your best bet will be either Big Sur River Campground and Cabins or Riverside Campground and Cabins . Alternatively, you can find reasonably priced accommodation in the nearby town of Carmel and drive down each day.”

Kauai, Hawaii

Kauai, Hawaii is the perfect place to spend an inexpensive tropical winter getaway in the US with its incredible scenery and  amazing things to do . The island of Kauai is filled with so many free activities that budget travelers will be hard pressed to see it all in one visit.

Kauai is filled with incredible hiking opportunities such as the Maha’ulepu Bluff Trail, the first few miles of the Hanakapi’ai Trail to see the Na’Pali coastline (reservations required), and the Awa’awapuhi Trail in Kokee State Park.

Snorkeling is the best way to experience the island underwater. Bring your own snorkel or rent one inexpensively from Snorkel Bob’s. The North Shore will likely be too rough for snorkeling in the winter, but Poipu Beach Park will be perfect and calm.

While the North Shore is too rough for snorkeling in winter, it is the best place to watch experienced surfers tackle the waves! Head to Tunnels Beach or Hanalei Bay to see them in action.

To experience more of Kauai’s culture, be sure to take advantage of the free events that happen regularly around the island. The hula show in the Poipu Shopping Village is fantastic as well as the one in the palm grove at the Coconut Marketplace.

Travelers lucky enough to be on Kauai for the holidays will love the festive, twinkling lights in the palm trees and Santa on a surfboard for their annual Festival of Lights. Winter also includes whale watching season so bring binoculars along.

Plenty of budget-friendly places to eat are sprinkled around the island. Head to Mark’s Place for a hearty plate lunch or Porky’s Kauai for their famous pineapple sausage. Tiki’s Tacos will satisfy the need for fish tacos.

Don’t underestimate local grocery store delis and farmers markets for fresh produce and prepared seafood.

Travelers will need to fly into Lihue Airport on the island of Kauai. Most flights will have a short layover in Honolulu.

Transportation to most any town on the island is easy to do by taking the Kauai Bus. TheKauaiBus app is handy for downloading the schedule.

Average highs in winter are 78°F with average lows of 68°F. Because Kauai is a tropical climate with a rainforest, you can expect around 4-5″ of rain in each of December, January and Feburary, and only 3.3″ of rain in March. There is more rainfall on the North Shore.

It is worth noting that Florida law states you can’t touch manatees, you can only observe them during the “swimming” tours. Alternatively, you can view a manatee sanctuary from the Three Sisters Spring Boardwalk for $20, which includes the trolley pass from Crystal River.

Manatees do roam while sheltering in Crystal River so you might just see them for free in the waters of Kings Bay Park and Hunter Springs Park. 

Other free things to do in Crystal River include visiting the Coastal Heritage Museum, checking out the colorful murals dotted around the small city, and browsing the shops at the Heritage Village where the stores are located in old cracker houses. 

You can also see the remains of the 1800s sugar plantation which was owned by slave-owner Senator David Levy Yulee at Yulee Sugar Mill Ruins Historic State Park.

Amazing beach days can be enjoyed at Hunter Springs Park and Fort Island Gulf Beach for free, which have restrooms, picnic tables, and parking (paid).

If you are in town to kayak, be aware that you cannot paddle near the manatee sanctuaries, however, Kings Bay Park and Hunter Springs have boat launch spots. It is best to check with local tour operators to keep yourself right and the manatees safe.

Big Bend National Park, Texas

Big Bend National Park is a great inexpensive and warm place to visit in the winter months in the USA. The park is located in far West Texas and covers a massive 800,000 square miles. You have countless affordable activities from which to choose on a visit here. 

It does cost $30 to enter the National Park, but it is good for 7 days and will lead to hours upon hours of adventures. Some highlights include hiking the more than 150 miles of trails, marveling at the Santa Elena Canyon, biking, birdwatching, and stargazing! If you are up for an adventure, be sure to hike the Lost Mine Trail for epic views of the Park.

It’s also worth it to take the self-guided tour of the Terlingua Ghost Town which will take you around this 1900’s abandoned mining town. You can pick up a map at the town’s general store.

If you have additional days, make sure to check out nearby Big Bend Ranch State Park. This is a dog-friendly gem with unique hikes and scenic views. The Closed Canyon Trail is a must!

After arriving, stop at the Cottonwood General Store in Terlingua and stock up on some picnic foods. If you are looking for affordable and delicious restaurant meals, head over to DB’s BBQ.

The Midland International Airport is the closest to the National Park, but you’ll still have a 235-mile drive to get to the entrance. You’ll definitely need to rent a car. 

Winter temperatures typically range from evening lows of 40 Fahrenheit and daytime highs in the 60s with less than 2 days of rain each month. It’s a great destination for those looking for a winter adventure on a budget.

Clearwater, Florida

Clearwater, Florida is an amazing beach destination to consider when looking for cheap warm spots in the USA in winter. Stacked with all the beach basics like gorgeous clear water, warm sandy beaches, and fun piers and shops to explore, this beach getaway is an all-around crowd-pleaser. 

The highlight of any trip to Clearwater is a day spent at Clearwater Beach or Sand Key Park . Open to the public, soaking up the sun and enjoying the crystal water is not an expensive way to enjoy the best of what this town has to offer. 

Pier 60, also located at Clearwater Beach, is another budget-friendly activity to enjoy while you’re in the area. Spend a couple of bucks at the bait house for supplies and snacks and waste away a day in paradise, fishing off the 1,080-foot pier. The winds might be rougher during the winter months, but fishing here is still enjoyable. 

A visit to nearby Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks is another fun way to explore Clearwater and the surrounding areas. You can wander the docks where sponges are still collected and enjoy some exceptional, inexpensive Greek food while you’re at it! 

Mama’s Greek Cuisine near the Sponge Docks is a great place for casual and affordable Greek dining. It is a beautiful open-air restaurant so you can enjoy the warm breezes from the ocean while choosing from great specials each day. Don’t miss out on the Greek french fries!

Tampa St. Petersburg is the closest airport to Clearwater Beach. It’s about 10 miles away. Trolleys and ferries are available as public transportation options if you want to save money and not rent a car.

Average high temperatures during the winter months hover in the low 70s reaching low 80s many days. Evening lows are in the high 50s/low 60s. There is about 6 days of rain each month.

Maui, Hawaii

Maui  is a beautiful Hawaiian island that can be visited year-round, but there are several reasons why visiting Maui in winter can be a great low-priced experience.

The most expensive part about Maui is getting there since your only option is a flight to Kahului Airport – though there are typically great flight deals from the West Coast of the USA. However, once you arrive, you can find many free or cheap things to do in Maui to make this an inexpensive trip.

For starters, the most popular and free attraction on Maui (aside from the spectacular beaches!) is the Road to Hana. You’ll see dozens of waterfalls, stunning beaches & cliffs, and have many hiking opportunities on this 65 mile drive. 

There are a few festivals in Maui in the winter that are worth experiencing. My personal favorite is the Maui Whale Festival which takes place during the entire month of February and gives locals/visitors a chance to celebrate the migrating humpback whales.

Another festival is the Maui Open Studios Event which gives you free access to dozens of art studios around the island. 

If you’re looking for other free  things to do in Maui , you can always visit the beautiful beaches (i.e. Kaanapali Beach or Makena Beach), take a hike (i.e. Pipiwai Trail or Waihee Ridge Trail), or watch the incredible sunsets.

You can also visit local farmers markets like Kula Country Farms Market to get a more local experience. 

Overall, Maui is a phenomenal winter destination to escape the cold winter weather and enjoy some nice R&R in the Hawaiian Islands! 

Paia Fish Market on Front Street in Lahaina is a fantastic economical sit down restaurant offering delicious freshly caught fish and craft beers.

Fly into Kahului Airport and pick up your rental car. There is some public transportation but most tourists do not rely on it as things are pretty spread out on Maui. It takes about 45 minutes to get from the airport to Kaanapali or Wailea.

Average highs in winter are 81°F with average evening lows of 66°F. You can expect around 1.5″ of rain over 6 days per month.

Maui’s weather makes it a great escape from colder regions, and perfect for enjoying outdoor activities such as hiking, surfing, and snorkeling.

Check out Puamana , walking distance into Lahaina, for different sized condo units right on the beach. They offer some of the best sunset viewing on Maui.

Temecula, California

Looking for a cheap warm winter vacation in America? Then, head to Temecula, California.

Visiting wineries and tasting wine are big reasons why Temecula is an excellent winter destination. If you can visit during the week, you can spend about 50% less on wine tasting with a Temecula SIP Passport and avoid the weekend crowds. You choose five wineries that you’d like to visit and you get a standard wine tasting flight at each of the wineries. 

Explore historic Old Town Temecula. In 1859, it was an old stagecoach stop and the charming architecture reflects its old west past.

Check out the oldest building in town, the Wolf Store Adobe, peek in a museum or two, and window shop the art galleries and boutiques. 

While there are plenty of places for fine dining, there are also some very reasonablly priced r estaurants at Temecula wineries .

At Baba Joon’s Kitchen order the Persian Tacos and grab an inexpensive bottle of white wine from the tasting room. A bottle here is the same price as two glasses. You may not taste as many wines, but with that kind of math, it’s hard to go any other way.

Another great option is Mama Rosa’s Trattoria at the Robert Renzoni winery next door. Their wood-fired pizzas and sandwiches are large enough to share on their lovely outdoor patio.

Temecula is less than 1.5 drive from Orange County, Palm Springs, Los Angeles, and San Diego, all of which have their own airports.

Public transportation in Southern California is notoriously poor. Trains to Temecula are not an option. But you can catch a bus from all of the airport cities mentioned. The closest is San Diego which you can do with two buses in 2 1/2 hours.

The average temps are in the high 60s/mid 70s and evening lows are in the mid-40s. You can expect around 2″ of rain over 4 days each month.

St Augustine, Florida

St Augustine is the nation’s oldest city. There are many free and inexpensive  things to do in St Augustine  and the weather is warm and sunny making it the perfect place for an affordable warm winter escape.

Explore the historic Spanish colonial era in St Augustine Historic Downtown with views of the beautiful beaches nearby. Join a walking tour of the Historic Downtown and pass through old houses, Spanish-style markets, Spanish restaurants, old jails, and forts.

You can also visit Fort Matanzas National Monument. It was completed in 1742 and comprises nearly 300 acres of Florida coastal landscape. The entrance to the Fort and the ferry is free from the National Monument. 

St Augustine is known for vibrant festivals throughout the year, including winter. In late November and December, there is the dazzling Annual Nights of Lights. More than 3 million lights adorn every corner of this historic district and it is truly a stunning sight to see.

There are many Spanish-style local restaurants on George street, Aviles Street, or Sevilla Street for fantastic food and drinks. You will also find many inexpensive food options here. 

For International travelers, fly to Orlando International Airport, pick up rental car and drive approximately 2 hours. Domestic travelers may be able fly into Northeast Florida Regional Airport, just a few miles from the city, and rely on public transportation.

The temperature is generally warm and mild in St. Augustine in the winter months with temperatures usually ranging from the mid-60s to mid-70s.

20. Quito, Ecuador

Perched high in the Andes at an altitude of 9,350 feet, Quito offers breathtaking views and a moderate climate despite its proximity to the equator. The city's historic center — declared a UNESCO Heritage Site in the late 70's — is a well-preserved architectural gem. Meanwhile, just outside the city, the Middle of the World Monument calls out to visitors keen to straddle both hemispheres. Tours to visit the attraction range from $15 for basic transport, to $120 for a full-day trip with other stops along the way.

Daytime temperatures in December average around 65 degrees Fahrenheit, providing a comfortable environment to explore the city without breaking a sweat. From Quito, visitors can also head out to neighboring destinations like Otavalo — famous for its market and crafts — and Cotopaxi, which is well-known for hosting the Volcan Cotopaxi, the second-highest point in the country. There are many factors to consider when planning a vacation, from finding cheap places to travel and the safety of your intended destination to hotel options . But like it or not, there’s one thing that influences our travel decisions more than anything else: money. All those resort fees, plane tickets , and life-changing meals add up pretty quickly—so at the end of the day, we really want to prioritize places where our greenbacks have the most spending power.

We did a little digging to find the countries where the U.S. dollar goes the furthest, based on current exchange rates. And while our fickle global economy means those rates can change at any time, certain places have consistently offered more bang for our buck over the years—and, fingers crossed, they should stay that way well into 2024 .

Without further ado, here are 21 of the best cheap places to travel around the world.

Budapest, Hungary

It’s true that those bucket-list destinations might have to move to a back burner for many travelers due to financial considerations. That doesn’t mean they need to sit at home, though. More people are turning to smaller cities, national parks, and other destinations they’ve never considered as they plan their next adventure.

Utilizing chain hotels with reward programs is one way travelers can save money, as is choosing cabins or condos with kitchens. Every fourth grader in America (and their family) is eligible for a free National Parks pass , as are people with disabilities and military members. Travel does not need to be expensive to be valuable. The benefit of looking at travel through this lens is that these locations are still packed with amenities and attractions at a lower price point. Lassen Volcanic National Park, California

California draws thousands of tourists each year to its most widely-known national parks, like Yosemite and Joshua Tree . They are fabulous, but the state is also home to Lassen Volcanic National Park . Located in the Cascade Mountains, Lassen has everything that visitors could need within the park, including lodging, junior ranger programs and dining options. Most visitors camp or stay at cabins or the guest ranch located within the park, but neighboring towns have a slew of motels and chain hotels that are incredibly affordable. According to Priceline , the average hotel room near Lassen costs around $116. There are also some kitschy properties like the River Inn , which evokes Schitt’s Creek vibes, for around $80 bucks a night.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

An example of Rust Belt Revival, the steel city has worked hard to shed its smoggy skies and expose its award-winning skyline . With more than 400 bridges and steeper streets than San Francisco, the city often surprises first-time tourists with how vast it is and how much there is to do. Pittsburgh is home to Mr. Roger’s legacy and is still the filming location for Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood . Stop by The Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh to pose by Roger’s iconic shoes and explore four floors of hands-on activities. There are also Carnegie Museums , a Smithsonian location and the National Aviary to explore. An influx of tech and medical sector workers has kicked the local food scene up a notch, too. While in town, every tourist must ride the Duquesne Incline to the top of Mount Washington to absorb that stellar skyline. An average domestic plane ticket to Pittsburgh costs around $280.

Badlands, South Dakota

Most Americans have seen a photo of Mount Rushmore, but more than half have never been there. While stopping by the mountain carving is a cool photo opp, the Badlands of South Dakota have so many other attractions to visit in addition. It’s also ultra-affordable, with an average hotel price of under $100. The Crazy Horse Memorial is an impressive rock carving — still uncompleted — honoring the Lakota leader who fought back against colonization. Badlands National Park is one of the richest fossil beds in the world, making it particularly enticing for dinosaur lovers. Every visitor to the Badlands is also required (unofficially, of course) to stop by Wall Drug , the rambling curiosities shop that attracts millions of visitors each year.

New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, West Virginia

Of America’s 63 national parks, New River Gorge is the most recent. The park is centered around the dramatic path of New River — which is, ironically, one of the oldest rivers on the planet. Geared towards adventure, there are more than 1,600 climbing routes , world-class whitewater rafting and amazing fishing. There’s plenty of camping within the park and hotels averaging $100 per night in nearby Beckley. Door County, Wisconsin

Panama City, Panama

Who says you can't go international on a budget? Travelers who frequent Mexico’s resort towns should try Panama City, a wallet-friendly option with so much to do. While flights from the U.S. can be a bit expensive — Priceline cites an average cost of $650 — the affordability of lodging and dining makes up for it. At Riane Aeropuerto Hotel and Casino , which has a pool with swim-up bar, outdoor games and a round-the-clock airport shuttle, a standard hotel room is around $100. Hyatt’s Hotel La Compañía , located in a former Jesuit convent in the historical cultural district, offers a luxury stay for around $350 per night — half what a comparable room would be in Cancun. Along the Amador Causeway, which has a bit of a Key West Vibe, guests can explore museums, check out a sloth preserve, bike or grab dinner at a local favorite — Fishlovers Ceviche y Bar.

Québec City, Canada

Tourists regularly flock to Canada’s two largest cities, Toronto and Montreal, when it's time to head up north. D.C. has a vibrant and ever-evolving food scene that is perfect for a splurge dinner during a trip, but the cafés within museums as well as the food trucks and food halls across the city are packed with options at a much lower price point. Indianapolis, Indiana

Galveston has developed a reputation for Texans as an affordable beach getaway — but with the average flight costing under $300, the Gulf Coast hotspot is a great option for any traveler on a budget. It’s easy to use hotel rewards in Galveston, but there are also RV parks like Camp Margaritaville and plenty of privately owned rentals averaging $160 per night. There is also no shortage of delicious beach-town eateries in Galveston that are uber-affordable. Playground Patio Bar & Grill has entertainment for all ages, and the Shark Shack makes a great quick lunch stop without having to brush off too much sand.

Arches National Park is one of the most stunning geographical formations in America. It’s also very, very rural. For adventure-seeking travelers who want to explore the 2,000 documented rock arches, the tiny town of Moab is a great spot to stay. Devil’s Garden Campground , located within the park itself, is traditional rustic camping with stunning desert views. Expedition Lodge , a vintage motel, is a better choice for visitors who want their own toilet and shower. Despite its rural roots, Moab has a great little food scene . The food truck park is a hit with visitors because everyone can get exactly with they want — no compromising necessary.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

Since Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, visitors do not need a passport — which can be an expensive document to obtain. The average flight, according to Priceline, is also just around $300. San Juan is more than 500 years old and filled with historic buildings — with stunning beaches and rainforests surrounding it. Spotin Tours offers ecologically-conscious rainforest excursions for adults as well as kids. The Hotel El Convento is a registered historic hotel in Old San Juan with rooms starting under $150, and the Sheraton by Marriott in the same historic district is a great option for utilizing reward points.

Jekyll Island, Georgia

The sleepy sister to the more popular Saint Simon, Jekyll Island is a budget-friendly way to enjoy Georgia’s Golden Isles . The oceanfront Holiday Inn resort includes free meals for kids 11 and under at any time of day as well as sweeping views of the Atlantic with a full-service poolside tiki bar restaurant. It’s a quick trip over to Saint Simon for more plentiful dining options, but part of the draw of Jekyll Island is its slower pace. Driftwood Beach has plentiful climbing opportunities for little kids, and the Summer Waves Water Park provides a great break from the waves. It’s not easy to fly to Jekyll, but it makes a great road trip.

Estes Park, Colorado

This mountain town situated just outside of Rocky Mountain National Park is made for individuals and families who love adventure. The average flight to Estes Park is under $250, and the town is less than 90 minutes from Denver. With classic eateries like Penelope’s World Famous Burgers and Fries and more foodie-friendly spots such as Himalayan Curry & Kebab , there are great meals for any budget. ATV and horseback tours allow visitors to see the mountainous terrain, and the fly-fishing is world-class.

St. Petersburg, Florida

Famous for its mild winters, Florida (the sunshine state!) is a favorite for the cheap warm places to travel in the winter months and year round. With 1,350 miles of coastline, there are tons of beautiful beach destinations to choose from that won't break the bank. A personal favorite of ours is St. Petersburg (not be be confused with the very cold Russian city of the same name). It's often called the Sunshine City and in addition to its tropical weather, it has raving reviews about its local art scene, culinary offering, and shopping. Gulf Shores, Alabama

Alabama isn't exactly known for as a world famous beach destination, but perhaps it should be – for budget travelers at the very least. Depending on where you're coming from, getting to Goa can be a bit pricey. Once there however, you can enjoy all its beauty for fairly little. Chiang Mai, Thailand

27 Cheap Destinations For 2024 With Great Weather in March

March is a great month for vacations because most of the world’s cheaper destinations have some of their nicest weather of the year this month, and they are generally not crowded anyway. The weather in the Caribbean and Central America is close to perfect in March and there are dozens of great choices in all price ranges. In fact, if you want to visit this area you might just skip to our list of the cheapest Caribbean islands .

Even if you aren’t near the Caribbean or don’t want to go to a beach, there are lots of great choices below. South America has early autumn weather in March, so some of the cities there can be great options. The Middle East and Asia also have plenty of fantastic choices with both cities and beach areas being possible on the same trip. We’ve added more information about which destinations have the best deals on all-inclusive resorts and included prices for those as well, and there are some really good deals out there in March of 2024. Hotels in many places on the list below went up in price over last year, but a surprising number of them actually came down in price and those are all noted so you can look for places that are bargains in 2024.

With the United States and Canada either being frozen or expensive (south Florida) this time of year, you’ll want to head to Latin America or the Caribbean for the best bargains with sunny and warm weather.

The Caribbean

Easter Week is March 24 to 31 in 2024 and those are popular dates in the Caribbean, but the two weeks before that are also popular for Spring Breakers from North Americans schools, so the whole month is going to be reasonably crowded in 2024.

Cancun, Mexico

Cancun is one of the best places to travel in March because the airport is the busiest in the entire region so it has more direct flights in from key hubs in North America and Europe than any other destination nearby. This keeps flights cheaper than to most islands, and easier to find as well. There are also some good all-inclusive resorts in the Cancun area, though they don’t offer quite the great value that those in Punta Cana (below) do.

Since Cancun is so popular and such a large area I have put together a guide to choosing where to stay in the Cancun area , which should be helpful. There are 7 different areas to choose from and depending on your tastes, some are much better than others. The room rates quoted below are for the Downtown Cancun area, which does actually have some small resorts with rooftop pools and such along with good restaurants and affordable nightlife. The other areas are at least a bit more expensive, and many are MUCH more expensive.

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

• March avg high: 85°F/29°C
• March avg low: 72°F/22°C

The resort hotels along the stretch of Punta Cana beaches tend to be large, with many having well over 500 rooms to go along with multiple pools and extensive recreational facilities. Many resorts here are also very family oriented so they could be ideal for a holiday with the kids or even the extended family. Flights into the Punta Cana airport are also among the cheaper fares into the Caribbean, with many direct flights from large hubs, so this is a good choice for many types of travelers.

Honestly, the best deals in Punta Cana are at the all-inclusive hotels, many of which are run by large Spanish resort chains. Even in March you can find places starting around US$200 per night for two people, including tax. If you don’t drink alcohol you can save a bit at one of the resorts that only includes breakfast, but the all-inclusive places are so efficient that you won’t save much anyway. Montego Bay, Jamaica

• March avg precip: 0.8″/2.0cm

If Montego Bay itself doesn’t sound perfect then you might instead consider  Negril  or  Ocho Rios , both of which are about 90 minutes from the same airport and each has a different feel. All combined there are about 500 hotels to choose from, including many all-inclusives, so it can be worth checking each of the 3 areas (that are all served by the same airport) and picking the deal that suits you best. If you want to stay in a large resort then the northern coast can be a great choice, but if you want to stay in a smaller hotel and sample some Jamaican culture, then Negril is by far the best choice of the three.

Los Cabos, Mexico

• March avg high: 80°F/27°C

Even though Cabo is in the Tropics, the March weather is still fairly mild. The days are pleasantly warm and perfect for the beach, while the evenings are a bit chilly and you’ll want to bring a jacket or sweater. This is perfect for those of us who don’t like to sweat in the tropical evenings in the Caribbean.

If you are interested in shopping and the party scene then you’ll feel most at home near the marina in Cabo San Lucas, but if you want something quiet on an uncrowded beach, you’ll be better off almost anywhere else in the area.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

• March avg low: 62°F/17°C

Among the great things about Puerto Vallarta is that it has a real historic town at its core so there are good sights, interesting restaurants, and great shopping there. Hotels are spread all up and down the coast, with a new area of posh hotels well north of the airport. As you can see by the hotel prices below, there is a huge difference between a 3-star, which is often an older traditional hotel, and a 4-star, which is usually a modern chain hotel on its own section of beach. The area has an increasing number of fully all-inclusive hotels as well, some starting at very affordable rates. The Puerto Vallarta area is fun to explore and generally very safe, but all-inclusive resorts can be a great choice for many travelers as well.

Ambergris Caye, Belize

Belize is definitely one of the  cheapest Caribbean destinations , and the offshore islands actually do have quite a Caribbean feel in spite of being surrounded by Latin America. There are wonderful resorts here for those willing to spend more, but even the cheaper hotels are decent, and very good bargains even in high season.

Guanacaste, Costa Rica

• March avg high: 96°F/36°C
• March avg precip: 0.2″/0.5cm

Hotels here run the gamut of prices, from simple and traditional beach shacks all the way up to posh chain hotels with all the luxuries. You don’t have to spend much to enjoy the friendly towns and great March weather, but the top places are good value even at the higher rates. Like so many other places, you pretty much get what you pay for in Guanacaste. In other words, a US$200 per night resort is going to be WAY nicer than a US$95 per night hotel a couple blocks inland. The area now has quite a few all-inclusive resorts at very tempting prices, although rates seem quite high in March, 2024 for some reason.

Mexico City, Mexico

The food, the nightlife, and the shopping are other great reasons to visit Mexico City at any time of year. Perhaps best of all, it’s all very cheap compared to most of Latin America so you can afford to splurge a bit while still keeping costs down. If you know how to speak at least some Spanish you’ll be even better off because English isn’t widely spoken outside of larger hotels and restaurants. Hotel rates in March of 2024 are looking very reasonable so this could be a great year to visit.

Cartagena, Colombia

• March avg low: 77°F/25°C

Another key feature about this city is that it’s a cultural destination in addition to being a great beach spot so you can explore the historic city center and include some culture on an otherwise hedonistic getaway. The beaches in the city aren’t the fluffy white sand you might dream about, but there is so much to see and do in this place that you might not notice. As long as you can get an affordable flight, Cartagena could be the cheapest beach destination in the Caribbean, at least as long as you don’t need a high-rise hotel on the sand. There are some really nice all-inclusive resorts at good prices, but overall Punta Cana is similar in price and probably better value.

Most people who visit Lima from far away will do it as part of a tour of South America, and in that context it’s a great stop for at least a few days. By the way, the rainy season in  Cusco  goes on in March, so the trails can sometimes be cut off, although many people go anyway. Hotels in March of 2024 are great bargains compared to previous years so this could be a great time to include Peru in a trip of South America.

Santiago, Chile

Another feature of Santiago is that it’s the gateway to several different other destinations within Chile so many people come and stay for just a few days before heading on to a mountain resort or the colonial city of  Valparaiso .

Buenos Aires, Argentina

As of late 2023, Argentina is once again in the throes of a financial and currency crisis with prices shooting up and the currency going down by just as much every month. The great news for international visitors is that Buenos Aires is now insanely cheap, especially if you bring US currency or Euros and exchange money at the “Blue dollar” when you arrive. It sounds sketchy but it’s actually just part of life in Argentina these days. Still, do some research on changing money at the blue rate and you’ll be in for one of the cheapest holidays of your life.

Bariloche, Argentina

• March avg high: 66°F/19°C

Bariloche is also unusual in that it was once a German community and there are still many chocolate shops around town as a reminder. The value here is excellent and it will provide a nice contrast from your other stops in South America.

You might also consider including  Mendoza  on your trip, which is the main wine region of Argentina, and also good value. A short side trip (by air) to Iguazu Falls can be wonderful if you’ve got at least two extra days. Nominal hotel rates in 2024 are looking pretty high in March so remember that if you pay in cash after you’ve exchanged it in Argentina you can basically be paying half the prices mentioned below.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Rio de Janeiro seems a bit cheaper in 2024 than it had been in the last few years as hotel deals seem easy to find. Budget travelers can still do well here if they stay inland from the beaches or even in the city center area, but those who want to participate in the good life in Copacabana and Ipanema most days will be paying more for it. On the other hand, petty crime is an issue in this city and tourists can be targeted so do a bit of research and be alert in order to stay safe.

From November through March there are literally no European cities that could qualify as having “great weather,” except for the Canary Islands, mentioned just below. So during the winter Europe is all about cultural tourism, and lower hotel prices make it especially appealing for those who like to stretch their travel budgets and avoid crowds at the same time.

Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain

Compared to Europe this island is a relative bargain, which helps make it popular pretty much all year round. Needless to say, prices can range quite a bit from one part of the island to another so it’s good to stay somewhere central if possible so you have the most options for food and drink. Most of the crowd in March will be retired refugees escaping the late winter from northern Europe, so don’t expect much nightlife.

March is a good month for the northern and southern parts of Africa, which are where most of the popular destinations are anyway.

Marrakech, Morocco

There are amazing numbers of hotels in Marrakech and it’s good to be aware that the bottom price level will usually be for something that is very shabby by European standards so many will want to pay a bit more for something nicer. Still, things tend to be cheap in all of Morocco so it’s a good overall destination.

Cairo, Egypt

When Egypt is struggling to attract tourists you might find that you can get a fantastic deal at a 3- or 4-star hotel, since they tend to lower prices when demand is weak while the cheaper places generally hold steady. Food tends to be very cheap in Cairo as well, as long as you avoid the restaurants in those fancy hotels.

Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt

• March average high: 77°F/25°C
• March average low: 61°F/16°C

Many people add a trip to Sharm el-Sheikh to a visit to Cairo, but more people are just skipping the chaos of Cairo and coming here instead. This is an area that is known for amazing value beach resorts along with diving and other activities. You won’t find a better beach hotel deal anywhere. Sharm had totally fallen out of fashion with non-Egyptian visitors for a couple years after a mysterious plane crash, but now the crowds are back and prices are close to normal for this bargain beach destination.

Cape Town, South Africa

• March avg low: 58°F/14°C

Cape Town is relatively cheap once you get there, so the main problem for most people is that it’s quite expensive to fly in. Since most people coming from longer distances tend to combine Cape Town with a safari or other activities then the airfare can still be worthwhile for a longer visit, even if it’s too expensive to just pop down for a few days.

Middle East

March is cool and even a bit rainy in most of the Middle East. An exception is  Dubai  and  Abu Dhabi , which both have perfect sunny weather. However, Abu Dhabi isn’t cheap enough to make the cut, and Dubai is below.

Hotels and restaurants in Dubai can be found in a very wide range of prices. Many independent hotels offer great value, including the many that are nightly apartment rentals rather than small hotel rooms. And finding cheap restaurants is easy as long as you follow the locals rather than the other tourists. Alcohol is extremely expensive in bars, which are only attached to hotels. Those who like a drink should consider stopping at the famous Dubai Duty Free on the way in, where you can buy two liters at low prices.

March is a good month to visit many parts of Asia, although some cities like Bangkok, Saigon, and Siem Reap are already too hot during the day for most people. Those looking for hot countries in March will find plenty to choose from in Southeast Asia.

Phuket, Thailand

Phuket is quite a large island with many different beaches on its edges, most of which are quite expensive and lined with posh resorts, so if you are on a low budget you are going to have to choose a beach carefully or even stay in Phuket Town, which is inland. Still, food and drink prices are quite low and it’s a fun place if you find the right area for your style. In 2024 we are seeing many hotel bargains so you should at least be able to find something decent a few blocks or more in the Patong Beach area, which is very central with plenty of cheap food options as well.

Boracay Island, Philippines

• March average high: 86°F/30°C
• March average low: 76°F/24°C

One thing that Boracay Island lacks is super-cheap hotels, but many people prefer to NOT have the backpacker crowd mixed in. Still, hotel value is excellent, especially considering that pretty much every hotel on the island is within a 2-minute walk of the sand, or it’s up in the hills with gorgeous views. Those looking for a new place to relax in March should consider Boracay, at least until it really catches on in a few years. The whole island was closed to tourists for half of 2018 to repair the infrastructure, so it is in much better shape now.

Pokhara, Nepal

Hotels in Pokhara are incredibly cheap by most standards, and they’ve built so many new ones that prices are likely to stay low for years to come. Food and drinks are also very good deals here so it’s a great place to chill out for a while. The trekking tours can be expensive, however, so if you want to go on multi-day trips with guides you are going to spend a decent chunk of money compared to just staying in town.

Chiang Mai, Thailand

Chiang Mai is one of the world’s great budget destinations, especially with its hotels but also with its food, drinks, and shopping. It’s very popular for those spending a month or more in the region because it’s much less hectic than Bangkok or other big cities while being cheaper as well. Hotels here are cheap, even those with pools, and Airbnbs can be cheap as well, especially for longer stays. There is a large English-speaking community here that is based mostly just northwest of the city walls.

Some cities, such as Anjuna and Vagator, are better for the budget crowd and the nightlife crowd, while other beaches further south specialize more in package hotels in the mid range. You can get by on very little in this area if you need to, but paying more will often get you much better quality that’s worth it. The cheaper hotels in Goa (and all over India) tend to be very disappointing, so it’s almost always better to splurge a bit and get something with consistent very good reviews.

Luang Prabang, Laos

March is still part of the high season for hotels in Luang Prabang, and accommodation here isn’t as cheap as it is in many other tourist cities in the region, but it’s still quite cheap by most other standards. Affordable food and drink are also easy to find if you look around a bit, so don’t just go into the first place you see if you are trying to save money here.

If you’ve been following the news you’ll know that Hong Kong has huge protests starting in 2020 and the mainland China government cracked down and accelerated the process of integrating it into the country. Many people have fled Hong Kong since they started enforcing some laws arbitrarily to intimidate those who wanted Hong Kong to be independent. It’s not the same fun-loving city that it was a few years ago, but Hong Kong is still an amazing place and it’s up to each potential visitor to decide whether to come or not.

Hi, I’m trying to go to Egypt at the end of March (anytime between the 19th-31st). When do you think is the best time I can find the best airfare prices? I’m traveling from the US. Thanks!

For longer flights like the US to Cairo it seems that the cheapest fares are earlier than they used to be. In other words, most likely the fares you’ll see right now for March flights will be close to the minimum and they will stay around the same price until December or January, when they are likely to start creeping up. I’d recommend doing a fare alert on kayak or airfarewatchdog and they can email you if the fare goes down for your dates. If it doesn’t go down between now and late November I would think about buying anyway. I hope this helps. -Roger

Many torrid travel spots are ripe with adventure, from snorkeling excursions to ATV tours to zip lining. Culture and fresh, local cuisine also come with the territory. Mérida, Mexico

Mérida , the capital of Mexico's Yucatan state, is one of the country's most underrated cultural hubs. “Surge tourism-related pricing hasn't arrived yet, as it’s often overlooked by travelers in favor of beachside resort meccas such as Cancun and Tulum ,” says Brandon Berkson, CEO of Hotels Above Par . Days unfold while ambling about the historic downtown, stocking up on affordable souvenirs at design-forward shops, and savoring regional dishes such as cochinita pibil at economical Yucatec restaurants. “If you’re looking for a boutique hotel in Merida that doesn't break the bank, Wayam Mundo Imperial is the move, with suites ringing in at under $175 a night.”

Ubud, Bali, Indonesia

Bali might require a long travel day and some pricier plane tickets, but the Island of the Gods offers travelers superb value. The budget-conscious crowd should consider the upland town of Ubud in particular, a bastion of traditional culture and lush scenery with more wallet-friendly rates than along the coast. You can spend the day palling around with cute primates at the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary for just $5. The surrounding landscape brims with rain forests and terraced rice paddies. Food from local warungs and accommodations are inexpensive as well. If you want to splurge, the top-rated Adiwana Unagi Suites is still around $150 a night.

Negril, Jamaica

The westernmost town in Jamaica, Negril — a.k.a. the Capital of Casual — offers sandy beaches, turquoise water, friendly locals, and a laid-back vibe. This relaxing paradise also won’t put stress on your wallet. Seven Mile Beach is dotted with affordable and delicious local beach shacks. “There are several great boutique properties — notably Skylark Negril Beach Resort , a member of Design Hotels — with rates under $200,” says Chelsea Bicknese, a travel advisor at Fora . “Rick's Cafe does a bar special that’s five Red Stripes and five shots for $25. Split between friends, it’s only a few bucks each.”

Phú Quốc, Vietnam

Admittedly, getting to Phú Quốc, a Vietnamese island off the coast of Cambodia, does require connecting flights and higher airfare costs than most places on this list, but don’t let that be a deterrent. Once you arrive at this slice of paradise, it’s an incredible value. Rooms at the top-rated Mövenpick Villas & Residences Phú Quốc start at just $75. The night markets in Dương Đông overflow with cheap and delicious eats. And, of course, catching rays on the white-sand beaches and hiking through Phú Quốc National Park are free.

Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica

While the beach resorts in Santa Teresa and Peninsula Papagayo may fetch high price tags, that’s certainly not the case across all of Costa Rica. Off-the-beaten-path Manuel Antonio — the area including and surrounding seven-square-mile Manuel Antonio National Park — is a bastion of biodiversity with rain forests, pristine white-sand beaches , coral reefs for snorkeling, and diverse wildlife, including three-toed sloths and white-faced capuchin monkeys. Its remote location keeps the prices down. Many of the hotels cost around $100 a night, and eco-tours are fairy reasonable as well.

Madeira, Portugal

Madeira is an adventure lover's paradise with cinematic scenery and eco-tourism opportunities galore. Its lush forests, black-sand beaches, natural lava pools, and towering mountains with idyllic viewpoints like Lombo dos Palheiros are just a few of the scenic highlights. “In downtown Funchal, many star attractions, including Mercado dos Lavradores and Livraria Esperanca, are free,” says Berkson. Entry to the flower-studded Monte Palace Tropical Garden costs about $13.50. “Right across from the sea and within walking distance of everything, Next hotel is a wallet-friendly stay with rates around $150 a night.”

San Juan, Puerto Rico

“For travelers looking for an easy and affordable beach vacation, Puerto Rico supplies some of the most reasonable direct flights from the United States — with tickets starting at $129,” says Laura Lindsay, travel trends expert at Skyscanner . Besides low-cost outdoor activities like stretching out on the sun-splashed shores and trekking through tropical rain forests a short drive away, head to the historic district of Old San Juan to experience local culture. It’s free to wander around and snap photos of the colorful buildings. Admission to Castillo San Felipe del Morro, the imposing 16th-century fortress and citadel, is just $10 for adults and free for kids under age 15.

Puebla, Mexico

“Featuring a subtropical highland climate, the central Mexican city of Puebla remains one of Mexico’s best-kept secrets,” says Berkson. The city is teeming with affordable activities — from checking out the art galleries, colorful facades, and handicrafts along Callejón de Los Sapos and admiring the well-tailored architecture of the historic library Biblioteca Palafoxiana, Catedral de Puebla, and the ornate 17th-century Capilla del Rosario to stocking up on handmade pottery and feasting on delicious local dishes. “You can often book my favorite stay, Banyan Tree Puebla , for under $200 a night.”

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

Droves of sunseekers flock to the all-inclusive resorts in Punta Cana . Far fewer realize the deals that await in Santo Domingo. Round-trip flights as low as $286 leave plenty of vacation budget for lodging, food, and entertainment — not that any of those things will set you back much in the commercial and cultural capital of the Dominican Republic. The trick to finding the lowest price is to look for times when kids will definitely be in school.

Ditch the snow for the sand of Hawaii. Panama City Beach, FL

Let Panama City Beach soothe your winter woes with its white-sand beaches, emerald water, and an annual average of 320 days of sunshine. The Maldives

There is no bad time to go to the Maldives. There is nothing bad about going to the Maldives at any time ever. They are perfect little islands, whichever you choose – tiny castaway-fantasy sandy islets, mostly with one immaculate resort, with various levels of splendidness. Even people who think they will get bored in the Maldives end up loving the Maldives. They're family-friendly , and for blissed-out beachy nirvana, they're hard to beat. Two new creative districts (Dubai Design District and Al Quoz) have gained the attention of the international art scene, too. To see the city in its best light, go in November, when it's not too humid and you can happily bronze by the pool all day.

Where to stay: The newly-renovated Bab Al Shams now has a bright, contemporary aesthetic that remains true to its Arabian roots, with new restaurants and fantastic sunset views. For some old-world glamour, there's the maximalist marble-clad palace Jumeirah Al Qasr , which made our Gold List in 2023 . Bali is the heavenly island with earthly pleasures. Back-to-blissed-out spa retreats so fine that Bali has developed a style all of its own: clean and contemporary, dark wood and linen whites. Parties, from flip-flop full-moon raves in hidden-away coves to the cool Potato Head Beach Club and The Lawn at the boho beach spot that everyone's talking about, Canggu . There's glamping here now, and chic boutiques. There's art in Ubud . There are spas absolutely everywhere. There are beaches, of course. And the pools here are something else: a classy, jungly deep green, shrouded by tropical leafery. Those incredible horizon pools high up overlooking rainforest – that's classic Bali.

Where to stay: Book ahead and you could nab a night in one of the world's most popular Airbnbs, The Hideout , a magical looking two-story bamboo hut in Selat. In Ubud, Capella Ubud is an African-inspired jungle camp home to 22 one-bedroom suites with sprawling outdoor decks and private plunge pools. Adrift in the Indian Ocean , a thousand miles from the nearest coast of Africa , the Seychelles are the ultimate fantasy-island escape.  The archipelago has year-round heat and sunshine, as well as its fair share of rain. The wettest months in the Seychelles are November to March, but temperatures never get too oppressively hot (meandering around 24ºC at night and up to 29ºC in the daytime, year round). October is a great month to go for a hit of sunshine, before it gets too rainy, and the air is fresher.

Where to stay: Its private-island resorts – North Island , Denis Island , the Six Senses Zil Pasyon – are possibly the most sensational anywhere in the world, a honeymooner 's dream (even William and Kate honeymooned at North Island, though the hotel is too discreet to admit it). What Mauritius has over its Indian Ocean neighbours, the Seychelles and the Maldives, is its size and natural diversity, and the fact that you can do it independently. Its beaches are still potted tropical paradises, and here you can rent a car and go exploring to find your own deserted cove, drive or hike up into its rainforested hills, take a boat out and go snorkelling or dive in its extraordinary underwater world. It has a bit of a reputation for overly groomed resorts – but it also has some of the finest beach hotels in the world, and you can find little boutique hotels right on the beach, too. Perhaps the best months to go to Mauritius are September, October and November, when it's hot but not too hot (averaging around 25-28ºC in the day, a cooler 17-19ºC at night), and at its driest (the rainy season in Mauritius is from January til April).

Where to stay: The most spectacular stay might be Shangri-La Le Touessrok , a private island escape with two pristine golf courses, a pagoda-style spa and a sushi restaurant. Canary Islands

It's summer all the time in the Canaries, where temperatures average in the low-mid 20s all year round. As well as the well-known destinations – Gran Canaria , Tenerife , Fuerteventura, Lanzarote (pictured) – there are three smaller islands that are less visited and less spoilt: La Palma , El Hierro and La Gomera . They don't appear on the average British holidaymaker's mental world-map, and make for interesting exploring and winter sunshine.

Thai islands

The islands of Thailand are the stuff of castaway fantasies. White sand, rustic-chic beach shacks, a hammock gently swaying between two palm trees as a turquoise sea laps at the shore… There are dozens to choose from, and each offers something quite different, from the super-spas of Koh Samui to barefoot beach-bum in Koh Lipe, while Koh Lanta remains quietly chilled out with lovely places to stay on beaches that stretch for miles.

Taghazout, Morocco

Once a slightly rough-around-the-edges hippie town, Taghazout is now Morocco ’s top surf destination. The sleepy fishing village on the Atlantic coast hasn’t lost any of its old-fashioned charm, and goats still wander gormlessly through the dusty tangerine-coloured streets while fishermen haul in their daily catches from rickety blue and white boats. For serious surfers, winter marks the beginning of peak season, and as the swell rips up, the break-chasing crowds arrive. Temperatures usually hover around a very pleasant 20°C, but Saharan winds often push the mercury up much higher. The places to stay keep getting smarter, offering surf lessons in the day and rooftop yoga at sunset. And even if you’re not into surfing, there are plenty of beautiful hiking trails nearby, camel rides along the beach and excellent fishing too.

The mid-Atlantic archipelago of Bermuda , mythical setting for Shakespeare's Tempest , is a land of pink beaches, pink houses and brightly coloured shorts. It is Caribbean in nature, though it's much closer to the UK – so shorter flight times – and has a distinctive character all of its own. Its pink-sand beaches are lovely, too. Those along the South Shore are the glory of the island. Horseshoe Bay is the best known and most crowded, though Warwick Long Bay, a short way along the coast, is just as alluring. At one end of Horseshoe there is a little patch of sand the size of a playground, cut off from the rest of it by a rocky hillock.

Where to stay: We like the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club , a 19th-century retreat set right on the capital's harbour.

'The Golden State' is an appropriate nickname; California is one of the sunniest of US states, with mild winters, little rain and plenty of sunshine, especially in the south. For a classic USA road trip , hire a convertible and hit the Pacific Coast road. State Route 1 runs 550 miles from Leggett all the way down to Malibu. It has famously beautiful views much of the way, and the best section is that from San Francisco through Monterey and San Simeon to San Luis Obispo (where the road drifts inland), although north of San Francisco the route is wilder and less crowded. Aim to drive southwards, to be closer to the sea.

Where to stay: In Los Angeles, The Hoxton has brought a healthy dose of European flair to the West Coast. Bora Bora, Tahiti & French Polynesia

In both geography and spirit, just about as far from a drizzly British winter as you can get. French Polynesia is made up of 100-odd little islands in the South Pacific Ocean, the best-known of them Tahiti and Bora Bora. They are out of this world. Castaway fantasy, ringed by reefs; the water unbelievable shades of turquoise blue; the hibiscus flowers Gauguin bright; everything bright and light and hyper-real.

Where to stay: The Brando is the area's biggest-hitting hotel – owned by Marlon Brando and set on a stunning, living coral reef. 

South Africa

Flight time: 12 hours from London When to go : November–March Average winter temperature: 27°C

It might be in another hemisphere, but South Africa is in the same time zone as the UK – which means no jet lag. In Cape Town and beyond there is stunning scenery, breathtaking beaches, as well as world-class wines and fabulous food.The country's most celebrated stretch of coastline is the glorious Garden Route. However in the other direction, a road trip through the Western Cape makes a rewarding alternative and the weather is particularly good in December and January. The less-explored Overberg Coast has wide beaches, good restaurants and wineries, moody seas at the southernmost tip of Africa, and a sensational coastal reserve that even the locals don't know about.

Where to stay: In Cape Town, check into The Silo , which sits on top of the Museum of African Art. Just over an hour's drive away Leeu Estates (pictured) in Franschhoek is an arty stay for post-safari relaxation. 

Rajasthan, India

With its cities of pink, blue and gold, its romantic lakeside palaces and desert camps, Rajasthan is India 's brightest and most beautiful state. Go there and get carried away, whether you're getting stuck into the hustle-bustle streets of Jaipur , escaping into the desert around Jaisalmer, or floating wistfully across the lake in romantic Udaipur.

Once a hiding place for pirate treasure and prohibition liquor, Harbour Island in the Bahamas is a colourfully eccentric retreat where every night is a party and every day more vibrant than the last. The sand is pink, the turquoise water is home to green sea turtles and orange starfish, and yellow-throated birds fly about the trees. Days on the beach are long and lazy, and the time of day forgotten.

Where to stay: For a boutique stay, The Other Side is a small, gorgeous set of tents and shacks on Harbour Island. 

Tel Aviv, Israel

Israel enjoys around 300 days of sunshine a year – and although winter here may not be as scorching as some of the other big-hitters, if you come towards the beginning or end it’s still warm enough to lie on a beach. The modern Middle Eastern metropolis of Tel Aviv is just a five-hour flight from London, making it an easy long-weekend hop. With its skyscraper skyline, striking Bauhaus architecture, avant-garde art galleries, world-class restaurants and hedonistic after-dark culture, this is the Mediterranean’s very own version of Manhattan. Throw in 14km of beautiful coastline, and it’s easy to see why so many creatives are drawn to the vibrant city.

Where to stay: One-time 19th-century convent The Jaffa , in the city's Arabic district, is the most ambitious design hotel.

Jordan is full of surprises. The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, to give it its full name, has wonders both natural and ancient. It's true that much of the country is desert (seemingly endless Wadi Rum has even doubled as the moon in Hollywood movies), but there are also swathes of fertile land, bright and beautifully green. The waters of the Red Sea, off the coast of Aqaba, are bath-warm all year – and colourful, too, home to myriad fish, rays and turtles which make their home on the full-of-life coral reefs – and the best time to go for beach weather is February til May. Meanwhile, winters can be chilly in the north of the country, where snow caps the magnificent treetops of the Ajloun Forest Reserve; and the best months to go to ancient Petra, Amman and the north are March, April, May, September and October.

Where to stay: Feynan Eco-Lodge is one of the only places to stay under the stars at the Dana Biosphere Reserve.

Flight time: 7 hours and 15 minutes from London When to go: October–April Average winter temperature: 26°C

Oman is a less-glitzy, laid-back alternative to Dubai – only the landscape here is more dramatic: wide open spaces punctuated by oases and desert towns; valleys fragrant with rose and sandalwood; hidden coves with golden beaches and brilliant-turquoise water. The capital, Muscat dazzles in the year-round sunshine with its grand mosques and bustling souks. Up in the far north-east, the Musandam Peninsula has some of the best diving in the Middle East (whale shark and turtles are the big draw).

Where to stay: Six Senses Zighy Bay is on a golden sweep of sand backed by the impossibly steep Al Hajar Mountains. To feel truly isolated, camp in handmade Bedouin tents among the epic sand dunes of the Wahiba Sands south of Muscat – it's the best way to find authentic Oman.

With its lovely Caribbean climate, guaranteed warm and sunny days and very little rain, Cuba ’s weather is at its most reliable during the UK winter. The beaches down on the south coast may get the best sunshine and draw the biggest crowds, but there’s plenty beyond the palm-fringed stretches of sand. Havana ’s got its colourful pastel-hued buildings, cigars and Cadillacs, while the perfectly preserved Spanish colonial architecture in UNESCO-protected Trinidad makes the city feel lost in time. Elsewhere, there’s no end of nature reserves, lush forests, mountains and tobacco plantations to explore.

Where to stay: Gardens Havana is a sweet guesthouse in a faded, renovated townhouse in Havana. 

Western Australia

Flight time : 20 hours from London When to go : November–March Average winter temperature: 35°C

The north-west coast of Western Australia is remote (it closed its boarders to the rest of Australia for over two years during Covid), beautiful and largely uninhabited. It has the least-visited of all Australia's coral reefs, Ningaloo Reef, a pristine 260km stretch of coral where thrilling encounters are fairly routine, whether you're diving or snorkelling. Turtles nest from November to March.

Where to stay: Como the Treasury in Perth is the city's smoothest stay, with a rooftop restaurant and beautiful bedrooms. 

Flight time: 14+ hours from London (via Johannesburg) When to go: November–March Average winter temperature: 27°C

Astonishingly, Namibia gets barely half a million visitors a year – while neighbouring South Africa receives almost 10 times that number. But as travellers are slowly beginning to discover, this is one of Africa’s most fascinating destinations: rugged, intrepid and dramatic. More than a dozen new camps and lodges have opened up over the past few years, each one rocking a more creative approach to conservation. Namibia is usually touted as a year-round destination, but in truth the searing summer temperatures can be oppressive. November to March may coincide with the country’s wettest months, but with the rain comes a stunning transformation of scenery. The arid desert morphs into a lush green carpet; swarms of migratory birds arrive, and animals start breeding. Rain is localised and comes in short, sharp bursts, so it’s unlikely to have too much of an impact on your trip.

Belize ’s peak season coincides perfectly with the UK’s coldest months. Although temperatures remain high all year-round, January to March has the lowest chance of rain, making this an ideal time to explore this tiny adventure-packed nation. Bordered by Guatemala and Mexico, Belize attracts a fraction of the crowds of its neighbours, yet the natural and cultural diversity of this former British colony is truly compelling. It’s home to Mayan ruins, national parks, nature reserves and the Belize Barrier Reef (which forms part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, the world’s second largest), all begging to be explored. The country’s jungly interior contrasts with a dazzling Caribbean coastline and hundreds of small cayes and islands, while a flurry of fresh hotels have all put eco-tourism at the top of their agenda.

Where to stay: At rattan- and plant-filled Itzana .

Lamu, Kenya

Flight time: 17+ hours from London, via Nairobi When to go: December–February Average winter temperature: 32°C

When the Foreign Office slapped a travel ban on Lamu after the 2011 Somali terrorist attacks, it fell off the map. But now with sanctions lifted, crowds are starting to flock back to this far-flung African island that still feels totally unchanged by time. It’s long been a popular beachy bolt-on after an epic Kenyan safari, attracting curious travellers rather than flag-following sightseers. There are no vehicles, just donkeys and dhows, and the heady mix of Arab, Persian, Chinese, Indian and European cultures is mesmerising. After a few days in the UNESCO-protected Old Town, head south to the deserted beaches or drift over by dhow to the nearby Robinson Crusoe islands of Manda and Kiwayu. From December to February, temperatures average a steamy 32°C, making winter the prime time to come and enjoy the postcard-perfect empty sands and Lamu’s laid-back rhythm.

Where to stay: Seafront Peponi was built in the 1930s and has been a hotel since the 1960s, with an incredible pool, shady verandah and a list of former guests that includes Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall. 

Zihuatanejo, Mexico

Flight time: 17+ hours from London (via Mexico City) When to go: December–April Average winter temperature: 30°C

Over on Mexico’s Pacific Coast, two beach towns sit side-by-side: Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo . They couldn’t be more different. Ixtapa, stacked with high-rise hotels and modern infrastructure was purpose-built for tourists, while, just round the bay, Zihuatanejo has kept hold of its old-world charm and sleepy-fishing-village feel. It’s a low-key beach retreat with genuine Mexican flair; fisherman flog their catches on the shore each morning, and the town centre is filled with historical cobbled streets and a buzzy market. Clutches of boutique properties sit right on the beach or overlooking the bay – which is a hit with surfers. It’s hot all year round, but October to April sees the least rain, making this a perfect spot for a hit of winter vitamin D.

Gulf of Chiriquí, Panama

Flight time: 13+ hours from London When to go: December–March Average winter temperature: 32°C

The Gulf of Chiriquí is nothing new – travellers have long been flocking to the white-sand beaches and dazzling turquoise waters of Panama ’s Caribbean archipelago. But the Pacific side is still significantly less discovered. There’s Islas Secas, a highly exclusive, privately-owned archipelago of 14 islands offering pristine beaches and one of the largest coral reefs in the Pacific, making it the perfect spot for diving and snorkelling. It's just under an hour from Panama City by twin-otter plane and is totally worth it for the privacy and seclusion once you arrive. The best time to come is from January to April, when the wet rainy season gives way to a few months of glorious sunshine and scorching temperatures.

Where to stay: Philanthropist Louis Bacon opened Islas Secas , home to four individually designed Casita sites and, three Tented Casitas, all located on one of the islands and sleeping up to just 24 guests.

São Tomé and Príncipe

Flight time: 20+ hours from London (via Lisbon and Accra) When to go: December–February Average winter temperature: 30°C

Marooned off the coast of Gabon, these tiny unspoiled islands together make up Africa’s smallest and least-visited country. But it’s thanks to the tiny tourist numbers that São Tomé and Príncipe still retain the allure of somewhere almost completely undiscovered. These jungly islands are home to more endemic species per square mile than anywhere else on earth – making them a bit like Africa’s very own Galápagos . January, February and March are the hottest months, when the dry and dusty winds blow straight in from the Sahara.

Where to stay: When South African billionaire Mark Shuttleworth opened up his first boutique hotel, Bom Bom , back in 2013, a new breed of luxury traveller arrived; since then, he’s opened two more, Roça Sundy and Praia Sundy . They’re all part of a wider project to create jobs and boost tourism – so you’ll be doing good while on holiday too. 

Flight time: 13.5 hours from London UK (via Johannesburg, South Africa) When to go: April–November Average winter temperature: 26°C

This southern African country has the most astonishing coast – the beaches of Mozambique are out of this world. Great stretches of sand, wild and dune-backed; lapped by the beautiful Indian Ocean where humpback whales breach, where you can swim with manta rays in the Mozambique Channel. In the little islands of Mozambique's Bazaruto Archipelago , a protected marine park towards the south, there are sand-floor bars and simple thatched lodges, and the most sensational sandy islets in bluer-than-blue waters, like wisps of cloud in a summer sky. On the beaches of northern Mozambique you feel as though you're at the end of the world; off this coast are the dreamlike Quirimbas Islands, including heavenly Vamizi

For those keen to tread where others have not, Mozambique has a certain caché – savvy travellers have been returning, in small numbers, to this coast for the past 20-odd years – and a few new spruced-up hotels are starting to appear – but are keen to keep it all a secret. We say go now, before the secret is out.

The Philippines

More than 7,000 islands. Deserted white-sand beaches lined with tilting coconut trees. Protected marine parks with pristine reefs like giant tropical fish bowls. Surf breaks so phenomenal they draw the world's best pros. Low-key but slick hotels and villas. And some of the friendliest people on the planet. This is the glory of the Philippines .

Where to stay: Amanpulo , in the Palawan archipelago, is a blissed-out private island hotel.

Bahia, Brazil

Flight time: 13 hours from London When to go : October–February Average winter temperature: 31°C

On Brazil 's Atlantic seaboard, far from the tourist trail, Bahia has deserted beaches, rainforests full of wildlife, cocoa farms, a surfers' town and several barefooty resorts that you'll never want to leave. Head to the small town of Itácaré for surfing, sailing, walking and birdwatching; to Trancoso for people-watching and beach-partying.

Where to stay: Built between a deserted beach and a black lagoon, Butterfly House is an eco-luxe guuesthouse made up of five green-grass-roofed bungalows on bamboo stilts, enveloped by thousands of citronella plants.

It may not the obvious choice for a beach holiday, but all the better for it: Senegal , in West Africa, has some beautiful golden sands, fantastic surf, great music and delta wildlife. Go for a holiday of life-changing experiences.

In Central America, the ancient Mayan cities of Guatemala , hidden deep in rainforests full of colour and exotic noise, make Rome seem as if it was built in a day. From jungle temples to beachfront bars, the delights of this magical country make for an unforgettable journey.

Yes, Hawaii is hot all year round. And yes, it has a lot of swanking five-star resorts that cater to your every whim and could be anywhere in the world. Some people – a lot of people – like those places; and why not? For others, there is everything else Hawaii has to offer. The real Hawaii. The best beaches, the best surf, the best walks through rainforests or up volcanoes.

Kerala, India

The oases of Western Egypt have always been havens of refuge in a beautiful but unforgiving landscape; and with the advent of small, low-key hotels in the area, designed to respect and reflect the local environment, their capacity to refresh is greater than ever. Everyone is seduced by Laos's misty, mystic mountainscapes and its historic city, Luang Prabang From the moment the country opened its doors to tourism in the 1980s, visitors have talked in reverent tones about the sleepy town far upcountry on the banks of the Mekong River. It captivates. It weaves a spell. It carries some flavour of Indochina before the modern world got there.

Ecuador is less developed than Costa Rica , so expect an adventure — one with everything its Latin cousin has to offer, and more besides. Want wildlife? Take a luxury cruise into the Ecuadorian Amazon. Want surf ? Ecuador’s 1,400 miles of Pacific coast has plenty of that. And then there’s Quito , a much smarter capital than San Jose: a heady blend of steamy salsotecas, grand Andean vistas, and fabulous hotels in ravishingly restored colonial mansions (none more elegant than the peerless Casa Gangotena). You may have heard of another of its under-the-radar destinations, the Galapagos, too. Ecuador’s different geographical zones have their own, distinct weather patterns, but Europe’s winter is when the weather is warmest in Quito and the Highlands; driest in the jungle; and sunniest on the coast. The Andaman Islands

Every bit as dreamy as the Maldives, but more satisfyingly off-radar, the Andaman Islands have smartened up. This tropical archipelago — geographically closer to Myanmar and Indonesia than its owner, India — has always been brochure-beautiful, but only recently blessed with luxury digs. Those far-flung beaches and impossibly pure waters were more reward for intrepid surfers and gap-year backpackers until now. But it was only a matter of time before this primitive paradise turned upscale. Havelock is the most developed of the 572 islands, the vast majority of which are off-limits to visitors (and populated by indigenous tribes). It’s here that Indian luxury hotel giant Taj has newly scattered 72 thatched villas under a rainforest canopy, fringing the fabled Radhanagar beach, widely said to be among the best in the world.   Winter is the clearest, driest time of year — particularly January to March — with temperatures around 29C.

Where to stay: Jalakara is a boutique, teak-and-concrete sanctuary tucked into a banana plantation, where there’s no WiFi, no TV — just utter, nature-swathed serenity.

Karnataka, India

Flight time : 9 hours from London When to go : October–April Average winter temperature: 27°C

Karnataka’s beach scene is every bit as beautiful, but rather less glowsticky, than Goa ’s, though it shares the same coast (the state of Karnataka is further south). Gokarna beach, often listed among India’s finest sandy crescents, is chilled-out, powdery and palm-fringed; beach-goers more hammock-swinging yogis than UV-painted ravers. Better still, there’s more to explore beyond browning and sun salutations. Hampi ’s magical, ancient temples and bizarre, perilously-stacked boulders have fascinated wanderers and vagabonds for hundreds of years.

Where to stay: Try trekking and then de-stressing at the Taj Madikeri Resort & Spa , in the emerald, coffee- and spice-planted hills of Coorg.

Vietnam may well be one of the most fascinating, beautiful and charming countries you will ever visit. Saigon is wonderful, colonial and quirky; Ho Chi Minh City has one of the world's best food scenes. And the coast of Vietnam – oh, the coast! The beaches are extraordinary. So much untouched beauty. Little islands and dramatic bays to explore by boat. Out-of-this-world beach-chic places to stay, right on the sand. And even though it's easy-going and luxury can be found everywhere, it still feels like a secret, still some sense of discovery about a trip there.

Where to stay: On a stretch of under-rated Vietnamese coastline, Regent Phu Quoc is a luxury gem with all the trimmings for an idyllic long-haul fly-and-flop.

Ghana’s ‘Africa for beginners’ reputation tips a hat to the ease of a trip here — stable politics, developed towns, functional transport. But it misses all the other things that make Ghana great. Like the capital, Accra, a spirited city stuffed to the gills with red-hot food, nightlife and art. See Urban Grill, Afro-Latin fusion helmed by Andrew DiCataldo, of Manhattan’s once-loved Patria; rooftop club Carbon, owned by Nick House of Mahiki; and Gallery 1957, with its knack for edgy homegrown shows that blow up on social media. Then there’s the beaches: bonfire parties and street food at Accra’s own Labadi. Winter months are hot — temperatures average around 28°C — so you’ll be glad of a bracing Atlantic dip. Alright, there’s no Big Five, but there are safaris: walking with elephants, world-class birding, humpback-whale-watching. Plus there’s that handy hour’s time difference in common with South Africa, with only half the flight time.

Tangier, Marrakech

Flight time: 3 hours 40 minutes from London When to go: March–May Average winter temperature: 17°C

From the 1920s to the 1950s, port city Tangier was a playground for the maddest and baddest bohemians: Beat icons like Burroughs and Kerouac; glamorously demon-plagued playwrights from Tennessee Williams to Jean Genet. But it wasn’t just the romance of boxy white-washed buildings fanning along a too-blue African shoreline that brought them. The city’s status as a near-lawless ‘international zone’ made strong drugs, strong cocktails and other strongly sordid entertainments all-too-readily available. The Moroccan monarchy later enacted punishment: the city was left to rot. A new king and a new attitude have revived it, widespread restoration inviting a smarter vitality, where cafés-cum-bookshops and speakeasies retain a raffish-cool, without segueing into seedy. In a hilltop casbah, El Morocco Club is where the leisure class make easy work of looking beautiful while slurping oysters and sipping Mojitos. And though chaotic Marrakech isn’t short of designer riads to escape to, Tangier is an infinitely jauntier option, and with T-shirt temperatures to boot.

Or you could trust us, and our sources. Pulling together the latest research by the Post Office, currency specialists and others, we’ve listed 2024’s best-value places to visit. They range from Sri Lanka, Egypt and Turkey to the lesser-sung likes of North Macedonia, Ikaria and Bolivia — via a few surprising candidates in Spain, France and Portugal. Each comes with the typical prices for coffee, food and, of course, a beer.

1. Ikaria, Greece

Lonely Planet recently ventured to name the globe’s ten best-value destinations (in no particular order). One of them was this teeny-tiny Greek island, which is especially good for budget-friendly rooms, even if other costs are hardly low. Best accessed via a flight from Athens, Ikaria hitherto had various other claims to fame: it’s of the world’s four original blue zones, where people live longer than average; it’s where Icarus is said to have crashed after cockily flying too close to the sun; and it’s supposedly the birthplace of pleasure god Dionysos, which perhaps explains all the wineries. The big draw, however, lies in beaches such as Seychelles, christened for its Indian Ocean-esque white sand, pale pebbles and turquoise waters.

2. penang, malaysia.

For its Holiday Money Report, another annual publication, Post Office Travel Money analyses the costs of eight typical items — among them a three-course dinner for two, sunscreen and insect repellent — in 40 global destinations. Many of the top performers in 2024 have become more expensive than in 2023, but not so Penang, off Malaysia ’s northwestern coast. A large island where pure shores and rainforests sit alongside Buddhist temples and hawker street food, it has lots of beach hotels happily available in three-figure, flight-inclusive package deals from Britain. At less than £7 for a queue-jump pick, the Penang Hill funicular is similarly economical.

3. Czech Republic

It’s always nice — for us, at least — when the pound soars in value against another currency, meaning lots more bang for the same buck. That’s the case right now with the Czech koruna, versus which sterling soared by more than 12 per cent since early 2023. As such, you’ll be able to afford more walnutty trdelnik pastries in saintly Cesky Krumlov, extra pints in Pilsen, an additional wine tour in student-powered Brno and a bonus castle visit in Prague. In general, try to limit your time in the capital — which is predictably the most touristy Czech destination — in favour of exploring the rest of this underappreciated, frequently fairytale Central European country.

4. Tokyo, Japan

Tokyo has a reputation for being expensive — and it certainly can be, especially compared to other parts of Asia — but it’s also great at catering to travellers of every budget. Its capsule hotels, for example, offer horizontal cubicles at prices comparable to a bed in a hostel dorm room but with considerably more privacy, while a piping hot bowl of ramen in a typical restaurant costs as little as £4. There’s plenty to see without spending a penny, from the busy crossing at Shibuya to the Buddhist temple at Senso-ji.

5. Jerez de la Frontera, Spain

Home of sherry wines, Jerez is a vibrant Andalusian city that’s managed to escape most of the tourist hordes of nearby Seville, which means prices here are comparatively modest too. At restaurants like Tabanco Plateros, for example, you can get a flight of five sherries with matching cheese and charcuterie for around €10. And of course you can take advantage of the menu del dia , a set lunch menu that generally costs around €15 for two courses plus wine. Touring and tasting through the bodegas in the city is an essential part of any visit here, but otherwise this is a laid-back city where people watching from a terrace cafe is greatly encouraged.

Despite sterling’s well-documented struggles, it has gained ground on some other faltering currencies. Easily the biggest leap concerns Turkish lira; in 2023 for example, you could get more than twice as much for each pound as you could in 2021. Even allowing for soaring inflation, that means huge savings. The obvious places in Turkey to splash such bonus cash are buzzy, beach-speckled Turquoise Coast resorts such as lively Marmaris, busy Bodrum and quieter Dalyan.

7. Lisbon, Portugal

The Post Office’s Travel Money department produces an annual City Costs Barometer charting the best-value European centres. In the most recent edition, Lisbon came top, having barely seen any rise in prices; the average total cost of two nights’ three-star accommodation over a weekend is now estimated to be £121. Aiding the Portuguese capital’s status as western Europe’s most wallet-friendly option are numerous bars serving filling petiscos (small plates) such as octopus salad.

8. Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka ’s still-recovering currency is offering astounding value to visitors, who are being welcomed back with open arms. In the capital Colombo, opulent hotels with 40m rooftop infinity pools are barely £50 a night. Trains to the Portuguese-era fort city of Galle cost around £5 — in first class — while you can pay around £40 to look for leopards in Yala National Park or take a whale-watching cruise. Then, after glorious days on white-sand beaches, the finest crab curries should bring change from a tenner.

9. The Gambia

Mainland Africa’s smallest country packs plenty in. Spellbinding sandy beaches are the Gambia’s most famous attribute, with Cape Point the most Instagram-worthy, but there’s much more to relish: bird, hippo and chimp-watching cruises in River Gambia National Park, leopard-patrolled wetlands and mysterious stone circles. Nevertheless, and despite some excellent beachfront hotels, winter sun packages to this West African country are absurdly cheap. With the shared GMT time zone, you needn’t even worry about jet lag.

10. Bali, Indonesia

This volcanic, tropical Indonesian island can be startlingly affordable — especially if you travel in its shoulder seasons of April to June or September to October, when the weather is usually getting gradually drier or wetter. High-quality budget hotels proliferate, most of Bali ’s beaches are free and activities tend to be a bargain: less than £30 for cookery classes or guided sunrise treks up Mount Batur. Taxis also cost little, as does zooming around on a rented scooter. Food-wise, stick to classic streetside snacks such as nasi jinggo (rice and side dishes such as sambal-fried peanuts, all wrapped in banana leaves) or dine in the affordable restaurants of Canggu and Ubud.

In the pint-sized Central American country of Belize you’ll find jaguar-filled jungle, marvellous Maya ruins, caves, coffee farms, Caribbean beaches and, to enable splendid snorkelling and diving, a portion of the world’s second-longest barrier reef. Alongside some eye-wateringly expensive resorts for dot-com squillionaires come excellent boutiques in chilled-out beach towns. A good bet is Placencia, from which a two-dive outing will set you back as little as £125.

12. Jamaica

According to the Post Office’s 2023 Long Haul Holiday Report, Jamaica remained the best-value destination in the Caribbean. That ranking was based on prices surveyed in the north-coast hub of Montego Bay, a destination for beach-goers, snorkellers and rainforest explorers. The reggae-loving Caribbean island also lays on waterfalls galore, with Viator tours starting from £40. Even Jamaican rum is inexpensive at the airport duty-free.

13. Bolivia

Sightseeing trips are shockingly cheap in this landlocked country. Multi-day tours in cross-country vehicles to the epic Salar de Uyuni salt flats (that are turned by rains into a surreal mirror from January to April) can be priced as low as £80. Voyages on Lake Titicaca, taking in floating villages, are often less than £10, while Amazon jungle lodges tend to be more affordable than anywhere else in South America. In fact, the only expensive thing about Bolivia is getting there in the first place. A two-week tour with Exodus will deliver all the highlights; transport and most meals are included.

14. Hong Kong, China

According to currency-card provider FairFX, sterling has enjoyed great recent growth versus Hong Kong ’s dollar. Although bars and restaurants are often pricey, the vast array of accommodation allows for budget-conscious stays that can be fuelled by the output of the city’s sizzling street-food stalls; the likes of skewered curry fish balls, egg waffles and stinky tofu are wonderfully affordable. Taxis in Hong Kong are also cheap compared with Europe or North America.

15. Tallinn, Estonia

In the Gonsiori branch of La Prima Pizza, which has topped TripAdvisor’s rankings as the best restaurant in the Estonian capital, those titular pizzas cost from around £8. Serving a wider Italian cuisine than its name implies, the cosy venue also offers homemade limoncello. Elsewhere, you’ll find Nordic-inspired high-end dining — try Rataskaevu 16 — at prices considerably lower than for the same fare in western Europe, plus some superb rates at very cool design hotels. Most are close to the 14th-century old town in Tallinn — 2023’s European Green Capital — and its many free walking tours.

16. Albania

Everyone knows that eastern Europe is cheap — yet, even by those standards, prices in Albania are absurd. At a perfectly decent bistro here, couples can eat three courses of traditional food (try tave kosi — baked chicken or lamb in yoghurt), throw in a bottle of wine, and still struggle to spend a tenner. The same goes for entrance fees to the castle of national hero Skanderbeg or sunbeds on the Albanian Riviera amid Himare’s blissful, sandy shores. Luxury stays generally cost a pittance too.

17. Brittany, France

Crêpes. Together with their savoury, buckwheat galette counterparts, these omnipresent pancakes are a key reason why Brittany is so doable on a budget. Open at all hours and never expensive, crêperies allow you to save up for splashier seafood dinners. Also helping to cut costs are direct ferries from Portsmouth, Plymouth or Poole, lower petrol costs and an abundance of self-catering accommodation including holiday parks. While here, spend your days on sandy shores or admiring standing stones older than the Pyramids.

18. Hoi An, Vietnam

Frugal travellers are thrilled by large portions of southeast Asia, including Cambodia, Laos and the original backpacker destination, Thailand. But, according to the 2023 Post Office Long Haul Travel Report, Vietnam brought the best value of all — indeed, the city of Hoi An was named the year’s cheapest long-haul destination. Because everything else is so cheap, it’s possible to stay in top-notch hotels and still subsist on £100 a day, including sunscreen, cocktails, coffees and a three-course dinner for two. Local draught beers are especially cheap, while renting a moped will cut taxi costs and help you get to the nearby beaches. Cua Dai’s stretch of white sand is only a couple of miles to the east.

In a 2023 study, travel-money specialist Eurochange compared the pound’s strength against various countries’ currencies, looking at its value in late 2022 in comparison to the two preceding years. One of its tips was for India , where British currency converters benefitted from an additional £217 worth of rupees for every £1,000 exchanged. From the beach resorts of Goa to Keralan canal cruises or boutique hotels in pink-hued Jaipur, the south Asian country is a great option for anyone economising — aided by its affordable, excellent vegetarian food.

20. Andorra

According to the 2023 Post Office Ski Resort Report, prices at most European pistes are steadily increasing. Brilliant value for families, however, is Vallnord-Pal Arinsal in Andorra — a petite, Pyrenean principality wedged between France and Spain — courtesy of free pre-booked lift passes for children aged under 11. These allow a family of four to save over £400, and reduce the weekly cost to an estimated total of £1,784. Not bad for somewhere with a decent range of runs across handsomely wooded slopes.

21. Bamburgh, UK

Among more than 100 seaside towns investigated by the consumer body Which? in 2023, Bamburgh was one of just four to receive five stars for value for money. Dramatically overlooked by its namesake Norman castle, Northumberland’s most memorable resort also scored full marks for the quality of its sandy beach, for its tourist attractions — including a golf course — and, unsurprisingly, for that scenery. On days out, visitors can go dolphin-watching in the Farne Islands or cross the causeway to mystical Lindisfarne.

22. Marrakesh, Morocco

Having analysed 41 prominent holiday locations, the money-saving website Savoo named Morocco ’s most famous city as the cheapest all-inclusive destination outside Europe in 2023. Overlooked by the Atlas Mountains, Marrakesh offers affordable riads around its souks, then bigger, resort-style places in leafier suburbs. Petits taxis are a cheap way to get around and haggling on every price is positively expected.

23. North Macedonia

North Macedonia delivers canyons, mountainous national parks and Ottoman-era villages announced by narrow minarets. The standout sight is beach-lined Lake Ohrid, below its clifftop church, with the possibility of biking jaunts, kayak hire or waterside wine tasting. Just as enjoyable is kayaking through the quiet, spellbinding Matka Canyon and looking for lynx around the forests and waterfalls of Mavrovo National Park. Despite all of that, few tourists come, meaning absurdly low prices for Britons, further helped by the absence of the euro.

Avoid peak season (December to February) and holidays in Egypt can be extremely cost-effective, especially with the pound strong against the local dollar. From £2 shakshuka breakfasts to 50p fava bean falafel wraps, meals sell for a song. Cross-country trains are not only eco-friendlier than flying but far cheaper — 12-hour Cairo to Aswan services can begin at £36, for example. Shop around for well-reviewed excursions — a Nile sunset cruise or a Luxor tour — and consider the Luxor Pass; it’s both decent value and mighty convenient. As for the Red Sea, skip pricey hotspots such as Sharm el-Sheikh in favour of more authentic Dahab.

25. Mombasa, Kenya

Rather overshadowed by the country’s safari offerings, Kenya ’s stunning coast ranked as second cheapest in the Post Office’s 2023 Long Haul Travel Report. A string of gorgeous, pearl-white beaches await in and around the city of Mombasa, as do plenty of other cost-efficient options: an old town with elegantly carved wooden doors, diving in the Mombasa Marine National Park and Reserve (entry £14pp), crocodile farms and giraffe-filled wildlife sanctuaries. Use Ubers to get around and visit in October, November, March or April for the best rates.

26. Cape Town, South Africa

South Africa’s most popular city is another place where prodigious Ubers are a cheaper bet than taxis. There’s no charge to walk up Table Mountain (though cable car return tickets from £16 will tempt) and a staple “Gatsby” (a long sub with salad, fries and, often, masala steak) provides stodgy fuel for a song. In July and August many Cape Town restaurants offer special deals, perhaps helping you afford a Winelands tour or trip to see Boulder beach’s penguin colony.
