How to Plan a 1-Day Trip from Hong Kong to Macau

Just an hour away, but quite different from Hong Kong, is Macau : the mega-resort and casino center that also has interesting historical sights.

It is popular to travel from Hong Kong to Macau. In this article, you will find out how to travel to Macau from Hong Kong and what to see in Macau.

How to Get from Hong Kong to Macau

From Hong Kong to Macau, there are three modes of transportation: sea, land, and air. We suggest that you travel to Macau by ferry, which is the most convenient and economical.

By ferry (most recommended): It takes about 1 hour by boat from Hong Kong to Macau. The one-way fare is about 170KD. The fare for night ferries or holidays will be slightly more expensive.

By bridge (a new and comfortable way): Take the bus over the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge from Hong Kong port to Macau in just 40 minutes.

By helicopter (the coolest): It takes only 15 minutes to take a direct flight from Hong Kong to Macau, however the price is 4,300 HKD one way.

Hong Kong to Macau by Ferry

Hong kong ferry terminals.

1. Hong Kong Macau Ferry Terminal (preferred, most frequent ferries)

Hong Kong Macau Ferry Terminal is near the IFC Towers in the Shun Tak Centre on Hong Kong Island. You can take the subway and get off at Shueng Wan Station. During the daytime, there is a boat every 15 minutes.

2. China Ferry Terminal (recommended, good location)

China Ferry Terminal is in Tsim Sha Tsui. It is about a kilometer north of the Tsim Sha Tsui Star Ferry. You could walk to it through Harbour City Mall, or just take a taxi to 33 Canton Road.

3. Sky Pier at the Hong Kong International Airport (for transiting tourists only)

The terminal is located next to the Hong Kong airport. If you plan to take a boat directly from Hong Kong airport to Macau, you can choose to depart from this terminal.

4. Tuen Mun Ferry Terminal (Generally not recommended, inconvenient location)

This terminal is located in the New Territories, which is not popular for tourists. There are less than 10 ferries traveling between Hong Kong and Macau every day. This terminal is only practical if you are staying nearby.

Macau Ferry Terminals

It doesn't matter which port to go to Macau because Macau is not big. No matter which terminal you arrive at, there are free shuttle buses that can deliver you to any hotel or casino.

1. Macau Maritime Ferry Terminal (close to downtown Macau)

Macau Maritime Ferry Terminal, also known as the Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal, is the main northern terminal closest to San Ma Lo, architectural attractions, and about 23 mainly smaller casinos.

You can take Bus 3 from San Ma Lo to the Macau Ferry Terminal in about 10 minutes for 2.5 HKD.

2. Taipa Terminal (close to casinos, hotels, airports)

Taipa Terminal is to the south, closest to the Cotai Strip area with the biggest casinos such as the Venetian, the City of Dreams across the street, and the Macau International Airport.

To go to the Taipa Terminal, take the Cotai Jet from any of the three Hong Kong terminals. There are late night returns (at 1 AM) from the Cotai Terminal to the Hong Kong Macau Terminal.

Ferry Tickets: Costs and Where to Buy Them

Ferry prices are higher in the evening and highest at night, and higher at weekends and holidays.

  • For economy class, the prices are from 171 to 211 HKD for a single trip.
  • For superior/first class, the prices are from 346 to 391 HKD for a single trip.

You can buy ferry tickets at every ferry terminal as well as online. Usually, it is no problem to buy tickets on the spot except on some festival days. If you would like to skip long lines, you'd better arrive early or buy tickets online.

Getting from Hong Kong to Macau by Bridge

The Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge, the longest sea-crossing in the world, connects the cities of Hong Kong, Zhuhai, and Macau. This crossing is open 24 hours.

There are shuttle buses going from Hong Kong to Macau at all hours, they cost 65 HKD normally (70 HKD at night: 12-6 AM). The buses take around 45 minutes.

In Hong Kong, there are direct shuttle buses starting from Hong Kong Airport, Tsim Sha Tsui and Central to Macau via the bridge.

Planning a Macau Day Trip

Macau's main draw for tourists are the big casinos and hotels. It is the new gambling resort capital of the world with 5 of the world's 10 largest casino resorts. But there are also old Portuguese sites to see. UNESCO World Heritage sites San Ma Lo and Guia Fortress are popular with tourists. See the Top 6 Things to Do in Macau .

The St. Paul's Ruins

The ruins of St. Paul's Cathedral , which was built in 1580, are now the most representative landmark in Macau. They combine the style of European Renaissance and Oriental architecture, reflecting a blend of Eastern and Western culture.

Monte Fortress

Monte Fortress was built in 1627. The fortress, and the Macau Museum in it, is probably the best place to go to learn about Macau's history and culture. Museum tickets cost 15 HKD.

Senado Square

Until 1999 Macau was a Portuguese colony. Senado Square was an old Portuguese square. Old pastel colored buildings line the sides, and a church is at the back. It and about 20 other old buildings and forts are listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Walking around the square, you will feel like you are in Europe, with such a beautiful view and ambience. You can see so many shops selling Macau snacks like Portuguese egg tarts, puddings, and pork sandwiches.

The A-Ma Temple

The A-Ma Temple is a symbol of Macau's Mazu culture. With a history of over 500 years, it is one of the oldest temples in the city as well as a World Heritage attraction.

The A-Ma Temple was one of the first places the Portuguese saw when they arrived in 14th and 15th centuries and it still functions as a spiritual beacon in Macau.

The Venetian Macao

The Venetian Macao is a super large resort with the theme of Venetian waters, with 3,000 luxury suites, more than 30 restaurants, more than 330 retail stores, 4 outdoor swimming pools, and an 18-hole rooftop golf course. It is one of the largest casinos in the world, with no less than 640 gaming tables and 1,760 slot machines.

At the same time, it is also a must-see for tourists and one of the most well-known places in Macau.

Grand Lisboa

The building of the Grand Lisboa is like a giant golden lotus flower. It is the landmark of Macau and is very eye-catching. There are not only luxurious suites, but also Michelin restaurants, outdoor pools, and spas.

Wynn Palace

It is owned by the world gambling king, Alan Wynn. It is said that this resort costed 4 billion USD and attracts a lot of tourists not only for its luxurious outside, but even the decoration inside.

Getting to the casinos in Macau is easy. Free casino buses line up at both ferry terminals, and pretty women representing their hotels and casinos stand and hand out coupons and information. Just get on the bus you want for free. You can easily get lost in the biggest casinos eating, shopping, and seeing the shows.

If you have two days in Macau, check How to Get the Most out of Macau in 2 Days .

More Things You Should Know

1. Most nationalities don't need a visa to travel to Macau. You'll need your passport to travel between Hong Kong and Macau. Foreign tourists to Hong Kong generally have no problem entering Macau with a free short-term stamp on their passport. Check whether you need a visa or not .

2. Hong Kong dollars can be used in Macau. You don't need to exchange them.

3. If you easily get seasick on ferries, take some medicine or use seasickness band. It takes about one hour by ferry at a speed of 35-50 knots.

These attractions offer a fascinating glimpse into the cultural and natural beauty of Hong Kong. Additionally, indulge in a memorable stroll along the renowned Avenue of Stars (星光大道), where you can admire the awe-inspiring vistas of Victoria Harbor and Hong Kong Island adorned with its towering skyscrapers. If your schedule allows, make sure to catch the mesmerizing " A Symphony of Lights" show (幻彩咏香江) at 20:00, an enchanting display that transforms the Hong Kong skyline into a captivating audio-visual extravaganza, truly a feast for the senses.

Dining

Today, you will enjoy a half-day guided tour (09:00-13:30, about 4.5 hours) with us to explore the stunning city skyline, the beautiful Victoria Harbour, the traditional way of life, and the beach scenery.

In the morning, your guide will meet you in the hotel lobby between 08:50 and 09:00. It's time to enjoy your half-day trip in Hong Kong and explore the stunning skylines from a different perspective. Start by taking the famous Star Ferry (天星小轮) at Tsim Sha Tsui Pier (尖沙咀码头) and cross Victoria Harbour between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon in just 7 minutes. The Star Ferry, a historic ferry service that has been operating in Hong Kong since 1888, offers a unique experience with breathtaking views of the iconic skyline and Victoria Harbor. Disembark at Central Star Ferry Pier (中环天星码头).

After that, pay a visit to the highest point of Hong Kong Island - Victoria Peak (about 552 meters), also known as the Peak, where you can enjoy stunning views of the city skyline from another perspective. You will take the famous Peak Tram , which has been in operation for more than 130 years, and journey through the verdant woods to explore some hidden old buildings that were left behind from old Hong Kong. Once you reach the Peak, make sure to visit the Sky Terrace 428 - an observation deck that offers 360-degree views of the breathtaking Hong Kong skyline and beautiful harbor. Seize this rare opportunity to capture some amazing photos from the top.

Later, drive about 30 minutes from the Peak to the Aberdeen Fishing Village , where you will experience a very interesting contrast and change of pace from the Hong Kong business district and Kowloon. Aberdeen is a historic fishing village located in the Southern District of Hong Kong Island. It is one of the oldest and most traditional fishing villages in Hong Kong. Take a sampan ride through the village and witness the traditional way of life of the boat people. Visit the Aberdeen Wholesale Fish Market and see the fresh seafood that is caught and sold in Hong Kong. If time permits, take a stroll along the Aberdeen Promenade and enjoy the breathtaking views of the harbor and the surrounding mountains.

Lastly, escape the bustling cityscape and head to the tranquil Repulse Bay , one of Hong Kong's most famous beaches. Sink your toes into the soft sand, soak up the sun, and take a refreshing dip in the clear waters of the South China Sea. With its picturesque surroundings and serene ambiance, Repulse Bay offers the perfect setting for relaxation. Whether you choose to unwind on the beach or indulge in water activities, this coastal oasis will leave you rejuvenated. ( Note: In the event of unfavorable weather conditions for beach relaxation, an alternative plan will be executed, leading you to the vibrant Stanley Market. Explore the lively marketplace teeming with an array of exquisite trinkets, fashionable apparel, and unique souvenirs that cannot be found elsewhere. Indulge in a moment of relaxation by savoring a cup of coffee or beer at one of the charming seaside cafés or pubs, providing respite from the bustling crowds.) Upon concluding the tour, you will be accompanied back to your hotel.

Free Time Ideas for Evening Tour: If time allows, explore the lively street markets of Temple Street Night Market or Ladies' Market , where you can find a variety of local goods, including clothing, accessories, and souvenirs. The remaining time allows you to indulge in the vibrant street scene of Kowloon, with its bustling markets, shops, and restaurants. Take the opportunity to try some local street food or dine at a traditional Cantonese restaurant to savor the flavors of Hong Kong cuisine.

Admire the cityscape from Victoria Peak

If you have already explored Hong Kong and are looking to venture further, consider taking a day tour from Hong Kong to Macau . Begin your journey in the morning by heading to the Hong Kong Macau Ferry Terminal, where you can catch a TurboJET ferry to Macau. The ferry ride takes approximately 55 minutes and will bring you to Macau's Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal.

Upon arriving in Macau, start your exploration by visiting some of the iconic landmarks. The first stop could be the Ruins of St. Paul's , a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This magnificent structure features a facade adorned with statues of saints, angels, and dragons, showcasing a fusion of Portuguese and Chinese influences. The grandeur of the church's facade and the intricate carvings are truly awe-inspiring. Take the opportunity to climb the stairs to the top of the facade, where you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views of Macau and the Pearl River Delta.

Next, make your way to Fortaleza do Monte , also known as "Mount Fortress." This 17th-century fortification was originally built by the Jesuits and served as a defensive system. Climb Mount Hill within the fort and enjoy panoramic views of the city of Macau from its balustrades. As you explore, you'll also come across old cannons, providing a glimpse into the fort's historical significance.

Afterward, take a leisurely stroll to Senado Square , a vibrant public square situated in the heart of Macau. Visiting Senado Square immerses you in the city's unique culture and heritage. The colonial-style buildings that surround the square serve as reminders of Macau's Portuguese past, while the numerous shops and restaurants offer a delightful experience of the city's diverse culinary scene.

Make sure to pay a visit to the A-Ma Temple , the oldest temple in Macau, dedicated to the goddess Mazu, who is revered as the protector of seafarers. Explore the various buildings within the temple complex and learn about their religious significance.

If you're interested, you can also venture to the Venetian Macao , the largest casino in the world. Take some time to experience the opulence of the resort, try your luck at the tables or slots, or simply relax and soak in the luxurious atmosphere.

At the conclusion of your tour, your guide will accompany you to the cruise terminal, where you can board a ferry to return to Hong Kong. 1 Day Macau Itinerary – A Day Trip From Hong Kong

Last Updated May 27, 2024 William Tang

You are here: Home » Travel Itineraries » 1 Day Macau Itinerary – A Day Trip From Hong Kong

Macau is an awesome one day trip from Hong Kong that’s only a 55 minute boat ride away.  It’s a completely different vibe from the big city of Hong Kong.  Think of Macau as Asia’s version of Vegas but with old town Portuguese flare mixed around it.

If you’re like most travellers, you’re going to be based in Hong Kong but want the chance to explore Macau (also referred to as Macao) so I’ve put together the perfect one day Macau itinerary.

Table of contents

Your 1 day macau itinerary, what we missed in macau, recommended activities, macau is an awesome day trip, read more about hong kong, where to stay in macau if you had to, a little bit about macau.

everything you need to see and do in this one day macau itinerary

Macau is one of the two Special Administrative Regions of China and is bordered on the province of Guangdong.  There’s nothing that connects Hong Kong to Macau so a ferry is necessary although all that will change when they complete the bridge that will link the two cities.

Colonial Portugal meet the bright lights and casinos of Asia

What makes Macau unique is that it was former Portuguese colony and administered by Portugal from the mid-16th century until late 1999, similar to how Hong Kong was administered by the United Kingdom.

However what once was a sleepy colonial city has now ballooned to become Asia’s gambling capital.  The one thing that stuck out from my visit was just how many casinos there were.  Huge themed casinos dominate the skyline now with each newer one outdoing the previous new kid on the block.

What to do in Macau in one day without staying overnight

old portuguese style houses and lamp post as seen in the 1 day macau itinerary

If you’re in Hong Kong for more than 3 days, you probably have time to do a trip to Macau to mix it up so to speak.

For us, we never had a fixed date we wanted to do Macau.  At one point we had also considered doing 2 days there but after talking to many locals the feedback we repeatedly got was that it wasn’t worth it.  After the Maldives portion of the trip, Hong Kong’s weather was also extremely erratic with rain so we just played it by ear.

There was one day that finally looked good for us so we decided the night before to make the trip to Macau.  So that’s really the extent of the planning we did.  You can certainly book ferry tickets online but honestly you’re better off to show up at the purchase the TurboJet tickets right at the terminal because of how complicated it is to do it online.  There are departures every 15 minutes so you really have nothing to worry about.  Ticket prices start at HKD$171.

The way I broke the trip down was by the various areas of Macau.  With a full day or less than 24 hours in Macau, this itinerary makes a lot of sense for most travellers and I’d recommend you following a similar route to what we did:

  • Start off in Taipa and do the cultural sights first.  It’s a lovely little area full of Portuguese architecture, shops and food stalls.  I personally loved this area of Macau the most.  This area is also great to grab lunch.
  • Once you’er done here, cab over to Coloane which honestly doesn’t have too much but the big highlight is Lord Stow’s if you like Portuguese Egg Tarts.  Even if you don’t like or know about them, it’s worth a try.  There’s the small Chapel of St. Francis and the food vendors in front you can check out.
  • Hac Sa Beach is a short little detour after Coloane although to be honest the beach isn’t particularly nice.  The food stalls don’t look that appetizing either and if it wasn’t for Fernando’s which Chantelle’s aunt and uncle recommended, I’d say this area is skippable.
  • Now it’s finally time to head into the big city so start at the Ruins of St. Paul and snake your way down the shopping streets.  Have dinner in this area.
  • The night is young right?   Casinos always come alive at night so it makes sense to slot this at the very end.  Pick one or two you want to check out.  The unfortunate thing is that they’re quite spaced out especially between the older ones on the Macau peninsula and the new mega ones out in Taipa.

With 24 hours in Macau, here’s an exact breakdown of the itinerary that I recommend that you follow.  It gets you a chance to explore the entire city and the best that it has to offer.  If you’re looking for a way to have a copy you can download, just make sure you subscribe to grab the full trip plan right below this table.

With only realistically 12 hours to work with, things were of course tight and I definitely had to make a few calls to cut out some non essentials.  And then there was all the food we wanted to try.  Even with all the snacking we did, we still missed quite a few places!

  • Macau Tower – Great panoramic views of the city.  They have a skywalk and bungee jumping from up there if you dare!
  • Cheoc Van Beach – Another beach we could’ve checked out but there simply wasn’t enough time to go.  I doubt we would’ve been impressed
  • The old casinos like Hotel Lisboa and Sand s – One of the challenges with Macau’s casinos is that they are not easily walkable from each other.  As a result, it becomes really hard to hotel hop like you would in Vegas.  It would’ve been neat to check out some of the older casinos but in the end we figured that they’d be about the same
  • House of Dancing Water at the City of Dreams casino – If you’re into Cirque du Soleil type shows like in Vegas, this one’s for you.  We would’ve loved to have done it but we didn’t have time and also didn’t prebook.  Prices start at 600HKD

If you’re looking for more of a guided experience or looking to get your hands dirty with some activities in Macau, here’s what I recommend that you check out!

Things to know before you go

  • New bridge crossing – The Hong Kong – Zhuhai –  Macau Bridge (HZMB) opened October 23, 2018 which opens up a whole new way to get to Macau from Hong Kong.  Learn about the two different methods to get to Macau that involve shuttle busses.  The price of this starts at HKD$65 which means it’s cheaper than taking the ferry.
  • Ferry tickets hacks – This isn’t really advertised but you should know that you have to pick your ferry ticket times beforehand.  This may seem limiting but what most people don’t know is that you can always take an earlier ferry from the time you booked but you can’t take a later ferry.  What that means in terms of strategy is to book a late ferry coming home (i.e. midnight) so if you want to head back to Hong Kong early, you can have the flexibility to do so.  Or if you end up raking it in at the casino and want to stay later, you can do that as well.
  • Passports – You’re technically leaving the country when you head to Macau so make sure you have your passport.  You will be going through passport control when you arrive in Macau and when you go back to Hong Kong.  If you’re unsure, read the full entry requirements for Macau .
  • Private drivers? – You’ll be hounded by taxi drivers and tour guides when you get out into the main foyer of the Macau ferry terminal.  Ignore them.  It’s a lot easier and cheaper to run your own program and catch a few cabs you’ll need to get around.
  • Casino shuttles – If you want to save a bit of taxi money, why not take one of the several free shuttles to casinos.  We saved money at the start by going to one of the closer casinos to Taipa and then cabbed from there
  • Currency – Macau (MOP) has its own currency but Hong Kong Dollars (HKD) is accepted everywhere.  Just note that some places will give you MOP change.  If that’s the case, you can sometimes request to get HKD back instead.  If they can’t/won’t, just spend the MOP during the day
  • Koi Kei – What’s up with this place?  These guys have a stranglehold so large on Macau that even Starbucks would be impressed.  So they sell cookies and Macanese snacks that are great for souvenirs if you find anything you like.  It seems crazy how many stores they have but they’ve blanketed the city so well that everyone pretty much buys goods from them if you visit Macau.  They destroy the competition because they freely hand out or have self-serve boxes of samples so feel free to go nuts.  By far the most popular snack to have in Macau is their dried beef slices.  They’re quite delicious but the problem was that I knew I couldn’t bring these back to Canada since they are considered as meat products.

Useful addresses

  • Casa de Pasto Seng Cheong  (28-30 Rua do Cunha, Vila de Taipa) – Crab congee/porridge
  • 新好利美食餅店 (13-14 R. do Regedor, Vila de Taipa) – Fresh milk tarts
  • 大利來 Cafe Tai Lei Loi Kei (moved from the original at No.18, Largo Gov. Tamagnini Barbosa to south of the intersection of Rua do Regedor and Rua do Desporto, on the street that Rua do Desporto turns into) – Pork chop buns
  • Lord Stow’s (1 Rua do Tassara, Coloane) – Original Portuguese egg tarts.  There’s also a store now at the Venetian if you don’t want to venture out to Coloane
  • Fernando’s (9 Praia de Hac Sa, Hac Sa Beach) – Portuguese restaurant, also known for their pork chop buns

Insanely Detailed Hong Kong Itinerary

While this itinerary doesn’t cover Macau, you could easily add it to an extensive 1 week trip to Hong Kong.

Thinking about staying overnight?

Macau is easy to do in a day but if you feel like you need an extra day to explore, there’s nothing wrong with that.  Alternatively, it’s totally plausible that you gambled the night away but I wouldn’t judge ;).  There are lots of great places to stay in Macau but here are two of my top picks.

Here’s a look into what we saw in one jam-packed day itinerary in Macau.

hong kong to macau tour

Macau is well worth a day trip from Hong Kong and I feel that a full day is sufficient enough to see almost everything you’d want to see.  2 days is a bit top much considering there are probably other things you probably want to do ( and eat ) in HK and nearby islands.

It was a fantastic day of food, Portuguese influenced culture and a little bit of gambling.

I was pretty happy with the Macau in a single day itinerary I put together.  If there was anything I’d change, I’d probably leave out Hac Sa Beach and instead spend a bit more time in the casinos which ended up being a bit too short.

Travel Resources For Your Next Trip

If you’re in the process of planning your trip and putting together your itinerary, these are genuinely the best resources that the Going Awesome Places team stands by 100% .

Credit cards: Don’t get burned by hidden fees on top of terrible exchange rates. When we travel now, we use the Wise Card . Simply load it with the currency you need before you go and use it as a regular VISA or their digital wallet card. Use their free app to track how much you have and top up when you need to.

Flights: Of all the booking search engines, Skyscanner is the most helpful and easy to use thanks to their Everywhere feature . Kayak is also another that’s we will often check as well.

Car Rental: If you’re looking to save money, these car rental coupon codes will be a true game-changer. Otherwise, DiscoverCars and RentalCars are great places to start.

park sleep fly airport parking discount code

Airport Parking: You’ll need a spot to leave your car at the airport so why not book a spot at a discount. Use code AWESOME7 to get at least $5 off at Airport Parking Reservations or Park Sleep Fly packages.

Data: We’ve been a huge fan of wifi hotspot devices like PokeFi (use code GAP24300) because their rates are so good and you can use it globally but recently, we’ve really loved using eSIMs. The best one is Airalo . Save money by getting region-specific eSIMs and use referral code WILLIA9500 to get $3 USD credit on your first purchase. Ubigi is another one that we’ve had success with where they uniquely offer 5G coverage. Use code AWESOME10 to save 10% on your first order.

Hotels: Our go-to is Booking.com because they have the best inventory of properties including hotels and B&Bs plus they have their Genius tier discounts . The exception is Asia where Agoda always has the best prices. TripAdvisor is also useful for reviews and bookings.

Vacation Rentals: Your first instinct will be to check Airbnb but we always recommend checking VRBO as well if you’re looking for a vacation rental.

Tours: When planning our trips, we always check both Viator and GetYourGuide to at least see what’s out there in the destination that we’re going to. They often have different offerings and prices so check both.

Travel Insurance: Learn how to buy the best travel insurance for you. This isn’t something you want to travel without.

  • Insured Nomads – Popular insurance provider for frequent travelers and comes with great coverage and special perks.
  • RATESDOTCA – Search engine Canadians looking for the cheapest insurance including multi-trip annual policies.
  • SafetyWing – A perfect fit for long-term nomads.
  • Medjet – Global air medical transportation.
  • InsureMyTrip – Best for seniors, families, and those with pre-existing conditions.

HONG KONG TO MACAU BY FERRY or BUS (via Sea Bridge)

HONG KONG TO MACAU BY FERRY or BUS (via Sea Bridge)

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

Many travelers visiting Hong Kong end up also setting foot in Macau. It’s not surprising at all. Macau is fascinatingly vibrant and energetic. Although there are similarities, Macau offers a completely different experience from Hong Kong. It has its own currency, own diplomatic policy, and a unique history.

But the biggest reason why Hong Kong and Macau are always in the same bundle: they’re easily accessible from each other, only around an hour apart by ferry.

Some plan their trip with both cities in mind. In many cases, they book a flight to Hong Kong and a return flight from Macau, or the other way around. Some Hong Kong tourists prefer to visit Macau on a day tour.

It’s totally possible! You can travel to Macau in the morning and be back in HK in the afternoon or evening. I’ve done this a couple of times!

You have two options: by ferry or by shuttle bus via the newly opened Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge (HZMB).

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

Hong Kong to Macau by Ferry

1. choose your terminal in hong kong and macau..

Hong Kong has three terminals where you can board a ferry bound for Macau. One is located in Hong Kong Island, another in Kowloon, and one just next to the Hong Kong International Airport.

  • Hong Kong MACAU Ferry Terminal along Connaught Road Central, Sheung Wan area in Hong Kong Island.
  • Hong Kong CHINA Ferry Terminal along Canton Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon.
  • Sky Pier at Hong Kong International Airport. Exclusive to tourists only.

Note the difference between the first two options. The one located in Kowloon (Tsim Sha Tsui) is called Hong Kong CHINA Ferry Terminal.

Pick one that is most convenient to you. If you have a roundtrip Hong Kong ticket and you want to visit Macau straight away, the Sky Pier makes the most sense. If you’re coming from Tsim Sha Tsui, the Hong Kong CHINA Ferry Terminal is just around the corner.

These ferries will be arriving at either of these two terminals:

  • Macau Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal , located in Macau Peninsula. This is closer to the city center.
  • Taipa Terminal , sometimes called Cotai Terminal, just a short walk from Macau International Airport.

These are completely difference terminals and a bit far from each other, so make sure you book the right one.

2. Purchase a Ticket.

You can buy tickets at the terminal itself. Often, the fares do not differ much from each other. Even the travel experience is very similar. For me, it’s just a matter of travel time. I usually buy the ticket for the ferry that is leaving at my preferred time, regardless of the operator or boat.

  • Hong Kong/Kowloon to Macau: HKD 160 to 172 (in daytime) and up to HKD 211 (at night), one-way.
  • Hong Kong Airport to Macau: HKD 270 (day), HKD 300 (night), one way.

But you want to score some discounts, you can book in advance online visa Klook! For example, the regular one-way TurboJet fare from Hong Kong city center is somewhere between HKD 170 and 200. But with Klook, it’s only at HKD 165. From the airport, the regular one-way TurboJet fare is HKD 270. But with Klook, it’s only at HKD 263. You can save even more if you purchase roundtrip tickets at once.

For Discounted tickets, book below:

Please take note of the date and time of your trip because rates of sailing on weekends and at night are higher. Just click on any of the following links:

hong kong to macau tour

3. Board the Ferry.

hong kong to macau tour

The boarding process is pretty straightforward. After getting a ticket, follow the signs to the boarding area. Usually, there are staff members that can point you in the right direction.

If necessary, check in your bags. For hand-carry, only one piece per person is allowed. I remember, however, that they let me through with a small backpack and a suitcase. I asked but they said I didn’t need to check in anything. Not sure if small backpacks are counted as an item or I just got lucky.

Luggage Restrictions for Carry-On Each passenger is allowed only one carry-on (hand-carry) bag.

  • Size : maximum 600mm x 200mm x 350mm
  • Weight : maximum 20kg.

Luggage Restrictions for Check In Each passenger is allowed 3 pieces of luggage for check in.

  • Size : maximum 76cm x 56cm x 23cm
  • Weight : 40 kg

You’re gonna have to go through the Immigration counters, too. Make sure you have your passport and the details usually needed in the arrival form including the boat name and number and your address in Hong Kong.

Queuing at the Immigration can take some time especially at peak hours. Make sure you consider that when planning your trip.

When it’s time to board, find your seat. Your ticket has an assigned seat number.

The journey usually lasts 55 minutes for Macau-Hong Kong city center.

Macau Day Tour Package

hong kong to macau tour

But if you want to be more comfortable, there are day tours being offered in Hong Kong. They will take care of everything, from ferry tickets to your sightseeing in Macau to a sumptuous lunch at a 4-star hotel. If you’re interested in that, you can book below.

hong kong to macau tour

Useful Tips

  • Most seats have overhead compartments for bags and suitcases. Most, not all. I once had to hold my big bag on my lap all the way through.
  • If you suffer from sea sickness, take your meds before sailing. The current can be wild at times. I have seen passengers puking their guts out on the aisle floor a couple of times. It’s messy. You don’t want to be that passenger.
  • Check your seat number upon purchase. If you’re a group, even when you book the trip together, your seats may be super far from each other. This is probably a result of trying to fill the last remaining seats on the boat. I once traveled with my mom, who is an elderly, and a cousin, who was a first-time traveler. We booked together but we were assigned seats on completely separate aisles. I was so nervous that I would lose my senior mom and clueless cousin. We ended up waiting for everyone else to go disembark first before reuniting and getting out of the ferry together.

Taipa Ferry Terminal to City Center

If you’re arriving at Taipa Ferry Terminal, here’s how to get to the city center.

  • By Free Hotel Shuttle . At the terminal, you can board any of the free shuttles provided by hotels to get to the city center. You don’t need to have a reservation at that hotel to be let in. Even if you have no plan on staying there, you can get on. Just pick the hotel closest to your destination.
  • By Taxi . The flagdown rate is MOP 19 + MOP 2 for every 240 meters or every minute it’s not in motion. Additional MOP 3 charge for each piece of baggage in the compartment. The usual fare from the airport to the city center is MOP 70-90 , depending on which part of the city you’re going.
  • By Public Bus . I haven’t tried this personally. I always used the free shuttle bus. LOL. And taxi once. I have no information about this yet.

Hong Kong to Macau by Bus (Sea Bridge)

hong kong to macau tour

You can also take the bus to get to Macau from Hong Kong via the newly opened Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge (HZMB).

PICK UP POINTS IN HONG KONG: If your hotel is in Kowloon, you can catch a DIRECT BUS to Macau via Chinalink. You can catch one at either Prince Edward in Mong Kok or Kowloon Elements in Tsim Sha Tsui.

DROP OFF POINTS IN MACAU: MGM Cotai, MGM Macao, Grand Lisboa Macau, Starworld Hotel, The Venetian Macao, Galaxy Macao, and Sands Macao. Just find out which one is closest to your destination.

This express bus is operated by Chinalink. But you can get discounts if you book with Klook below!

hong kong to macau tour

Taking the direct bus is better than taking the public bus. If you take the public bus, you have to go to Lantau Island first, which means you need to take the MTR and another bus. That can be problematic if you have heavy luggage in tow.

But if you really want to take the public bus, here’s how.

  • Take the MTR to Sunny Bay Station.
  • Board B5 Bus to HZMB in Lantau Island. Fare: HK$ 5.8.
  • Go through Immigration and Customs inspection.
  • Ride shuttle bus to Macau. The ticket office is within the restricted area, after the Immigration. Fare: HK$ 65 (regular times), HK$70 (midnight to 5-59am).

HZMB to Macau City Center

You can take either 101X Bus or 102X Bus, depending on the location of your hotel. Fare is MOP6.

This sounds good! Thanks for sharing!

Nadine Rejano

Hello Sir! Thanks for this very informative article! I just wanna ask if you’ve already tried going to Macau then to Hong Kong by ferry then back to Macau. I’m planning our family trip and our tickets are Macau-Manila and vice-versa only. Do you have an idea if this is okay, esp. with the immigration. Thanks alot!

Yosh Dimen

Hi Nadine, yes, this is fine. I’ve done this before. We flew to Macau from Manila then went to Hong Kong by ferry on the same day. Our flight back to Manila was also from Macau. Naka-seat sale kasi kami sa Macau nun, hahaha.

But yes, this is okay. No problem.

Mean

Ilang oras po kaya ang byahe pag by bus?

Hi Mean, 45 minutes, according to news sites.

Gel

Hello po! Hong kong po entry ko and flight back ko to manila is from Macau. I’m planning to stay in Macau for a night before my departure and sa apartment ng pinsan ko po plano ko mag stay.. Okay lng po kaya yun sa Hong Kong CHINA Ferry Terminal immigration? Or kelangan ko po talaga mag book ng hotel?

Hi Gel, ang alam ko ok lang yun. Just make sure you have the full address and contact number.

If ang plan mo is HK tapos Macau, I think hindi concern ng HK kung saan ka magse-stay sa Macau. Mas concern un ng Macau immigration. So just make sure na may hotel ka sa HK and may full address ka sa Macau if sa pinsan mo ikaw mag-stay.

mae

hangang anong oras po kaya open yung sa bus terminal from HK to Macau

Hi Mae, wala pa kaming schedule now, kinukuha pa lang namin. :S

Nina

Do you happen to know kung san ang bus terminal from macau to HK by bus?

Hi Nina, this post might help: https://www.thepoortraveler.net/2018/07/macau-to-hong-kong-by-ferry/#Macau_to_Hong_Kong_by_Shuttle_Bus_Sea_Bridge

Casey

hi! if my flight is manila to macau then we will stay there for one night then our flight back to manila is from hongkong, there wilk be no problem am i right? thanks

That’s ok. We’ve done that a few times.

Norbs

Ano schedule ng bus from HK to Macau and vice versa?

Erwin gonzales

Hello ask ko lng if okie lng mg travel frm hongkong to macau visit lng ako?my mga need pabang docs. Or hahanapin ang imig.ng macau just for one day?

Hi Erwin, what do you mean mag-visit ka lang? Are you visiting someone or for tourism?

Ang alam ko, okay lang naman magvisit ng Hong Kong kahit day trip lang as long as you have proof na magtu-tour ka lang, may hotel reservation ka kahit sa Macau lang basta covered yung travel date, or may ticket ka pabalik.

Rexiel

Maraming salamat po sa information. Malaking tulong po sa akin sa pag plan ng big trip with family.

Tanong ko lang po –

Okay lang ba na one way ang ticket (with Cotai) na bibilhin namin (were a group of 11) kasi we prefer to go Taipa in the morning first. Then afternoon gala sa Macau. Then on our return to Hong Kong (with Turbo Jet) so we could save time.

Would it be better to rent a van for the day in Macau?

Thank you po.

Hi Rexiel, I think okay lang na one-way kasi parating one-way lang ang binibili ko since di ko alam pa what time ako matatapos mag-tour and ayoko magmadali. Never naman ako nagkaproblem.

How big is your group? Usually, di naman kailangan mag-rent. Take advantage na lang of the FREE casino/hotel shuttles!

Pau

Hello po,first time ko pong magtravel with friend. Dalawa lang po kami medyo kinakabahan lang po ako sa immigration mas mabilis po ba ang process if tour ka lang tlga? Ano pong tips niyo for first timer traveler??

Shie

Hi, we’re planning to book a trip, which is better po kaya? From Manila to HK to Macau or From Manila to Macau to HK? Last stop would be the origin of return flight. TIA!

Hi Shie, okay lang naman kahit aling route. Saken, ang magiging deciding factor ko ay ung price nung flights, kung alin ang mas mura.

Macau Travel Guide 2024 – Discover the Best Things to Do and Eat in Macao within just 48 Hours

Maureen

Welcome to the dazzling city of Macau, where every corner is filled with enticing cuisine, rich historical architecture, and vibrant nightlife. Despite its small size, Macau attracts countless visitors from around the globe, each seeking to immerse themselves in its unique charm. With so much to see and do, it can be overwhelming to plan your itinerary. That’s why we’ve curated the ultimate guide to help you make the most of your 48 hours in Macau.

Table of Contents

Take a direct flight via Macau Air

IMG_0833

We flew via Macau Air, which offers direct flights from Singapore to Macau, significantly cutting down travel time to just around 3.5 hours. It’s such a relief to have this direct route available, especially considering my last visit to Macau back in 2010. Back then, I had to fly to Hong Kong and then take a ship to Macau, which limited my time in this vibrant city to just a single night.

With the introduction of direct flights, it’s opened up a whole new opportunity to explore Macau more extensively. The flight itself was remarkably smooth, and I was particularly impressed by the attentiveness of the stewardesses, who went out of their way to ensure my son, Lucas, was comfortable throughout the journey. From offering him food to providing toys, their care and consideration made the flight a breeze for us both.

Checking into Marina Phantom Apartment

IMG_8971

Upon our arrival, we checked into the stylish Marina Phantom Apartment, a new addition to Macau’s accommodation scene. Its strategic location couldn’t have been better—it’s conveniently situated just across from Galaxy Macau and along the same vibrant street as Broadway Macau. The spacious rooms impressed us with their cleanliness and modern amenities.

But what truly sets Marina Phantom Apartment apart is its thoughtful inclusion of an open kitchenette. This feature proved to be a game-changer, especially when traveling with kids. Having the option to prepare simple meals or snacks right in our own room added a level of convenience and flexibility to our stay that we greatly appreciated.

Morning Stroll at the former Iec Long Firecracker Factory

firecracker

The following morning, we took a leisurely stroll through Taipa Village, tracing the footsteps of Macau’s industrial past at the former Iec Long Firecracker Factory. A fascinating relic of history, this once bustling site was one of five fireworks factories that thrived in Macau, offering employment opportunities to countless locals. However, as the 1980s ushered in a shift towards safer and more lucrative professions, the production of fireworks in Macau dwindled, leading to the closure of the Iec Long Firecracker Factory in 1984.

Despite its closure, the factory remains a poignant reminder of Taipa Village’s manufacturing heritage. As we wandered through the revitalized area, we marveled at the well-preserved buildings that once buzzed with activity. From the workshops where fuses were meticulously glued and firecrackers expertly crimped to the sprawling storehouses and tranquil ponds, every corner of the factory whispered tales of its industrious past.

Amidst the historic structures, there is a visitor information center, a quaint café, and a charming souvenir shop, each offering a glimpse into Macau’s vibrant culture. Additionally, one building had been transformed into an engaging exhibition hall, where we immersed ourselves in the rich history of Macau’s firecracker industry and the legacy of the Iec Long Firecracker Factory.

Exploring Guan Ye Street

DSC08373

Continuing our journey through Taipa Village, we find ourselves drawn to the charming allure of Guan Ye Street. It’s a hotspot for calligraphy enthusiasts and tourists alike, thanks to its charming mix of traditional charm and modern buzz. Walking along the narrow lanes, we were surrounded by colorful billboards that lit up the street, especially at night.

But it’s not just about the visuals – Guan Ye Street is also a foodie’s paradise! Being the first pedestrian-only area, the streets are concentrated in the hands of shops, restaurants, and dessert shops. Therefore, it is one of the must-visit destinations for tourists to enjoy food and purchase. We couldn’t resist trying the delicious Lao Day Beef Offal, which is famous for its flavorful beef dishes. And to beat the heat, we treated ourselves to some creamy Mok Yi Kei durian ice cream. Don’t forget to get some almond cookies. Famous bakeries such as Koi Kei, Choi Heong Yuen and Yee Kee sells them. These aromatic cookies come with crunchy bits of almonds and guaranteed to melt in your mouth!

The street’s architecture is a sight to behold too, with buildings that blend Portuguese and Chinese influences seamlessly. You’ll find intricate windows and vibrant stained glass that give the area a warm, Mediterranean feel. What’s really fascinating about Guan Ye Street is how it brings together different cultures. You’ll see traditional Mazu Temples standing next to charming Portuguese buildings, creating a unique and vibrant atmosphere that’s quintessentially Macau.

Macau Tower & Buffet Lunch at the City’s Only 360° Revolving Restaurant

DSC08415

As the afternoon sun begins to cast its golden glow upon the city, we make our way to the iconic Macau Tower. Offering panoramic views of the bustling metropolis below, the 338-metre tower provides the perfect vantage point to admire Macau’s stunning skyline. We cap off our day with a leisurely buffet lunch at 360 Cafe, the city’s only 360° revolving restaurant, where we indulge in an array of delectable dishes while marveling at the breathtaking scenery.

Bungee Jump

At the outdoor observation deck, the tower dominates the skyline and offers breathtaking panoramic views of Macao cityscape. It offers thrilling adventures such as the bungy jump, skywalk, skyjump and mast climb, bringing it to a totally new level of excitement. Not for the faint heart!

Ruins of St. Paul’s

Ruins of St. Paul's

We took a leisurely stroll around the Ruins of St. Paul’s, arguably Macau’s most iconic landmark. Despite having seen it before, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe as I gazed upon its magnificent facade, especially with the weather cooling down, making it the perfect time for a walk.

Hotpot dinner at Hoi Ngan Hoi Kei

IMG_0347

We had an amazing meal at Hoi Ngan Hoi Kei in Macau. They’re famous for their Chaoshan hot pot, which brings out the best flavors of the ingredients. They slice the beef by hand and make bouncy beef balls, adding a special touch to the meal. It’s all about simplicity and letting the ingredients shine. This place takes traditional Chaoshan cuisine to a whole new level!

Arriving at Grand Lisboa Palace

IMG_0536

The next day, we checked into our second hotel of the trip – Grand Lisboa Palace. Eager to immerse ourselves in its grandeur, we dedicated the following day to fully savoring the luxuries and amenities the hotel had to offer.

Must try The Grand Buffet at Grand Lisboa Palace

DSC08562

Our first experience at the Grand Buffet surpassed all expectations. Inspired by the lively markets of Asia, it boasted 18 live cooking stations and a staggering selection of over 600 international dishes. From fresh sashimi to sumptuous dim sum, and from savory Western roasts to indulgent desserts, every craving was catered to with finesse. The array of options was simply astounding, offering a feast for both the eyes and the palate.

IMG_0528

For those seeking further enchantment, we highly recommend a stroll through the adjacent Jardim Secreto garden. Its European-inspired charm adds an extra layer of magic to an already unforgettable dining adventure.

Discovering Lai Chi Vun Shipyards

IMG_0553

Next on our itinerary was a visit to the Lai Chi Vun Shipyards, a living testament to the artistry of shipbuilding. Preserving its heritage with remarkable integrity, it stands as Macao’s sole remaining shipbuilding site, offering insights into the city’s historical urban evolution, industrial growth, and way of life during that era.

Enjoy hand-beaten coffee at Tap Toi Cha Chaan Teng

DSC08887

When you’re in Macau, make sure to check out Tap Toi, a modern twist on the classic Cha Chaan Teng. They’ve taken traditional dishes and given them a fresh spin, and there are a few must-tries on their menu.

First up is their Instant Noodles Mixed with Scallion Oil Chicken Chop—a comforting blend of crispy chicken chop and flavorful noodles. Then, there’s the Scrambled Egg with Char Siu served with Rice, a delicious mix of sweet char siu and creamy scrambled eggs on a bed of rice. Wash it all down with their Deluxe Lemon Tea, a refreshing and tangy beverage. And don’t forget to try their hand-beaten coffee, prepared with care as it’s beaten 600 times to achieve the perfect creaminess.

Take a stroll around Coloane Old Town

DSC08842

Took a stroll around Coloane Old Town a this village untouched by the glitz of the casinos. Coloane Village, known as the “Back Garden of Macau,” has a 300-year-old old town area with historical buildings and colourful houses full of exotic charm. The streets are steeped in history, simple and serene as if travelling through time. Walking along the riverbank leads to the Chapel of St. Francis Xavier. Built in 1928 in Baroque style, its white and creamy yellow façade, oval windows, and bell tower create a picturesque atmosphere, perfect for photos. At this old town, you must queue for the first ever Lord Stow’s Bakery, the pioneer in Macau Portuguese egg tart.

Enjoy the city’s night view on an Open Top Bus Night Tour

macau night

As the sun sets on our final evening in Macau, we eagerly embark on the Open Top Bus Night Tour, a magical journey through the city’s illuminated streets. With its open-air deck providing unobstructed views, we settle into our seats, ready to be enchanted by the twinkling lights and vibrant energy of Macau after dark.

As the bus glides through the bustling streets, we’re treated to a dazzling spectacle of lights and colors. From the iconic Taipa Archway, adorned with intricate designs and bathed in soft hues, to the towering replica of London’s Big Ben, standing tall against the night sky, each landmark we pass is a testament to Macau’s unique blend of culture and architecture.

Our journey continues as we pass by the Golden Reel at Studio City, a mesmerizing sight that seems to defy gravity as it spins high above the city. Next, we catch a glimpse of The Parisian Macau, its towering Eiffel Tower standing proudly amidst a sea of lights. As we marvel at the intricately designed facade, we’re transported to the romantic streets of Paris, albeit with a distinctly Macanese twist.

DSC08524

Our tour culminates at the Venetian Macau Resort, where we’re greeted by the sight of gondolas gliding gracefully along the serene canals. With its Venetian-inspired architecture and bustling piazzas, the resort exudes an air of elegance and charm, inviting us to linger a little longer.

Our whirlwind 48 hours in Macau have been nothing short of magical. From exploring its historic landmarks to indulging in its culinary delights, we’ve experienced the very best that this vibrant city has to offer. I can’t wait to return for more adventures in the future. I hope this guide inspires you to plan your own unforgettable journey to Macau. Until next time, happy travels!

China Travel Advisory

Travel advisory april 12, 2024, mainland china, hong kong & macau - see summaries.

Updated due to new national security legislation in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Summary:  Reconsider travel to Mainland China due to the arbitrary enforcement of local laws, including in relation to exit bans, and the risk of wrongful detentions.

Exercise increased caution when traveling to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) due to the arbitrary enforcement of local laws .

Reconsider travel to the Macau Special Administrative Region (SAR) due to a limited ability to provide emergency consular services . Exercise increased caution when traveling to the Macau SAR due to the arbitrary enforcement of local laws .

See specific risks and conditions in each jurisdiction .

Mainland China – Level 3: Reconsider Travel

Reconsider travel due to the arbitrary enforcement of local laws , including in relation to exit bans, and the risk of wrongful detentions .

Summary:  The People’s Republic of China (PRC) government arbitrarily enforces local laws, including issuing exit bans on U.S. citizens and citizens of other countries, without fair and transparent process under the law.

The Department of State has determined the risk of wrongful detention of U.S. nationals by the PRC government exists in the PRC.

U.S. citizens traveling or residing in the PRC may be detained without access to U.S. consular services or information about their alleged crime. U.S. citizens in the PRC may be subjected to interrogations and detention without fair and transparent treatment under the law.

Foreigners in the PRC, including but not limited to businesspeople, former foreign-government personnel, academics, relatives of PRC citizens involved in legal disputes, and journalists have been interrogated and detained by PRC officials for alleged violations of PRC national security laws. The PRC has also interrogated, detained, and expelled U.S. citizens living and working in the PRC.

PRC authorities appear to have broad discretion to deem a wide range of documents, data, statistics, or materials as state secrets and to detain and prosecute foreign nationals for alleged espionage. There is increased official scrutiny of U.S. and third-country firms, such as professional service and due diligence companies, operating in the PRC. Security personnel could detain U.S. citizens or subject them to prosecution for conducting research or accessing publicly available material inside the PRC.

Security personnel could detain and/or deport U.S. citizens for sending private electronic messages critical of the PRC, Hong Kong SAR, or Macau SAR governments.

In addition, the PRC government has used restrictions on travel or departure from the PRC, or so-called exit bans, to:

  • compel individuals to participate in PRC government investigations;
  • pressure family members of the restricted individual to return to the PRC from abroad;
  • resolve civil disputes in favor of PRC citizens; and
  • gain bargaining leverage over foreign governments.

U.S. citizens might only become aware of an exit ban when they attempt to depart the PRC, and there may be no available legal process to contest an exit ban in a court of law. Relatives, including minor children, of those under investigation in the PRC may become subject to an exit ban.

The PRC government does not recognize dual nationality. Dual U.S.-PRC citizens and U.S. citizens of Chinese descent may be subject to additional scrutiny and harassment. If you are a U.S. citizen and choose to enter Mainland China on travel documents other than a U.S. passport and are detained or arrested, the PRC government may not notify the U.S. Embassy or the U.S. Consulates General or allow consular access.

Check with the PRC Embassy in the United States for the most updated information on travel to the PRC. In some limited circumstances travelers to Mainland China may face additional COVID-19 testing requirements to enter some facilities or events.

The Department of State does not provide or coordinate direct medical care to private U.S. citizens abroad. U.S. citizens overseas may receive PRC-approved COVID-19 vaccine doses where they are eligible.

Do not consume drugs in the PRC or prior to arriving in the PRC. A positive drug test, even if the drug was legal elsewhere, can lead to immediate detention, fines, deportation, and/or a ban from re-entering the PRC. PRC authorities may compel cooperation with blood, urine, or hair testing. Penalties for drug offense may exceed penalties imposed in the United States.

Demonstrations : Participating in demonstrations or any other activities that authorities interpret as constituting an act of secession, subversion, terrorism, or collusion with a foreign country could result in criminal charges. Be aware of your surroundings and avoid demonstrations.

XINJIANG UYGHUR AUTONOMOUS REGION, TIBET AUTONOMOUS REGION, and TIBETAN AUTONOMOUS PREFECTURES

Extra security measures, such as security checks and increased levels of police presence and surveillance, are common in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, Tibet Autonomous Region, and Tibetan Autonomous Prefectures. Authorities may impose curfews and travel restrictions on short notice.

If you decide to travel to Mainland China:

  • Enter the PRC on your U.S. passport with a valid PRC visa and keep it with you.
  • Read the travel information page for Mainland China .
  • Enroll in the  Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP)  to receive alerts and make it easier to locate you in an emergency.
  • Avoid demonstrations.
  • Exercise caution in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.
  • Avoid taking photographs of protesters or police without permission.
  • Keep a low profile.
  • If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify U.S. Embassy Beijing or the nearest U.S. Consulate General immediately.
  • Review the  China Country Security Report  from the Overseas Security Advisory Council.

Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) – Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution

Exercise increased caution due to the arbitrary enforcement of local laws .

Summary: Hong Kong SAR authorities have dramatically restricted civil liberties since the Government of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) imposed the Law of the PRC on Safeguarding National Security in the Hong Kong SAR on June 30, 2020. Following the Hong Kong SAR government’s enactment of its own Safeguarding National Security Ordinance on March 23, 2024, Hong Kong SAR authorities are expected to take additional actions to further restrict civil liberties.

The 2020 National Security Law outlines a broad range of vaguely defined offenses, such as acts of secession, subversion, terrorism, and collusion with foreign entities. The 2024 Safeguarding National Security Ordinance builds on this framework with additional vaguely defined offenses, such as treason, insurrection, theft of state secrets, sabotage against public infrastructure, and external interference. According to the legislation, these offenses are applicable to foreign nationals within the Hong Kong SAR and to individuals, including U.S. citizens and permanent residents, located outside its borders. Under these provisions, anyone who criticizes the PRC and/or Hong Kong SAR authorities may face arrest, detention, expulsion, and/or prosecution. Hong Kong SAR authorities are attempting to enforce these provisions against individuals, including U.S. citizens and permanent residents, residing outside of their jurisdiction by offering cash rewards for information leading to their arrests in the Hong Kong SAR.

Dual Nationality: The Hong Kong SAR government does not recognize dual nationality. Dual U.S.-PRC citizens and U.S. citizens of Chinese descent may be subject to additional scrutiny and harassment. If you are a dual U.S.-PRC citizen and enter Hong Kong SAR on a U.S. passport, and you are detained or arrested, PRC authorities are under an obligation to notify the U.S. Embassy or a U.S. Consulate General of your detention and to allow U.S. consular officials to have access to you. In practice, however, U.S. consular officers may be prevented from providing consular assistance, even to those who have entered on their U.S. passports. For more information, visit Consular Protection and Right of Abode in HK(SAR) for Dual Nationals - U.S. Consulate General Hong Kong & Macau .

Demonstrations : Participating in demonstrations or any other activities that authorities interpret as constituting an act of secession, subversion, terrorism, or collusion with a foreign country could result in criminal charges under the 2020 National Security Law and/or the 2024 Safeguarding National Security Ordinance. Be aware of your surroundings and avoid demonstrations.

If you decide to travel to the Hong Kong SAR:

  • Enter the Hong Kong SAR on your U.S. passport and keep it with you.
  • Read the travel information page for the Hong Kong SAR .
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify U.S. Consulate General Hong Kong & Macau immediately.
  • Review the China Country Security Report from the Overseas Security Advisory Council.
  • Do not consume drugs in the Hong Kong SAR or prior to arriving in the Hong Kong SAR.
  • Follow the Department of State on  Facebook  and  Twitter . Follow U.S. Consulate General Hong Kong & Macau on  Facebook  and  Twitter .

  • Monitor local media, local transportations sites, and apps like  MTR Mobile  or  Citybus  for updates.

Macau Special Administrative Region (SAR) – Level 3: Reconsider Travel

Reconsider travel due to a limited ability to provide emergency consular services. Exercise increased caution due to the arbitrary enforcement of local laws.

Summary:  The U.S. government has a limited ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in the Macau SAR due to People’s Republic of China (PRC) Ministry of Foreign Affairs travel restrictions on U.S. diplomatic personnel.

Even in an emergency, the PRC Ministry of Foreign Affairs requires all U.S. diplomatic personnel, including those accredited to the Macau SAR, to apply for and receive visas before entering the Macau SAR. Approval takes at least five to seven days, significantly limiting the U.S. government’s ability to offer timely consular services in the Macau SAR.

Dual Nationality: The Macau SAR government does not recognize dual nationality. Dual U.S.-PRC citizens and U.S. citizens of Chinese descent may be subject to additional scrutiny and harassment. If you are a dual U.S.-PRC citizen and enter the Macau SAR on a U.S. passport, and you are detained or arrested, PRC authorities are under an obligation to notify the U.S.

Demonstrations : Participating in demonstrations or any other activities that authorities interpret as constituting an act of secession, subversion, terrorism, or collusion with a foreign country could result in criminal charges. Be aware of your surroundings and avoid demonstrations.

If you decide to travel to the Macau SAR:

  • Enter the Macau SAR on your U.S. passport and keep it with you.
  • Read the travel information page for the Macau SAR .
  • If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify Review the China Country Security Report from the Overseas Security Advisory Council.
  • Do not consume drugs in the Macau SAR or prior to arriving in the Macau SAR.
