Cruise control not working again

  • Add to quote

had this same problem a while back and that cause was the accessory fuse blown. well the fuse is good but i put a new one in anyway. brake light is not stuck on so its not the foot pedal switch. open up the switch compartment and the little piece that always seems to break that sits in the slot on the brake handle is not broken. dont see a crimped or broken wire , but how would that happen if it was never messed with. so i am stumped. when i turn on the switch on the dash it lights up red like it should, but when i engage the switch it doesnt turn green and obviously it doesnt work. the only code showing is for the cruise control fault so i am guessing its the switch ? with the fall riding season upon us and the leaves may turn color eventually  i would like to have it working. if not for that, i would just wait till winter time to mess with it.

Any changes in grips, bars, etc. ? Obviously something is shorting out the accessory circuit? Or the cruise control switch is damaged Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

while sitting in the shed i also pulled clutch in light went to green. pulled brake in,light went to green. foot brake depressed, green light again. nothing was done to it. been using it since fuse replaced sometime ago. just stopped working

Hmm seems to be working in opposite, I’d bet on an ecm fault Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Did you do something prior to the fuse blowing? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

nope but that was 2 years ago

P0577 Code means there is an electrical fault in the cruise control circuit due to a failed switch, or abnormal voltage level in the input circuit.

I had the same problem with my 2012 Custom. I found the front brake light switch was bad so I did a quick repair and all was well for a while. When the cruise stopped working again I used the Harley diagnostic check and found the set/resume switch was faulty. I replaced both the front brake lamp switch and the set/resume switch and all has been well ever since. I'll list below the Diagnostic Steps I used. Hope this helps. Mike U. 1. Hold cruise switch in the SET position. 2. Turn the cruise ON. 3. Turn the main power switch on, the cruise light should initially come on then turn GREEN, release the cruise switch the light will turn RED. 4. Push the cruise switch to RESUME the light should turn GREEN, release the switch, the light should turn RED. 5. Roll the throttle OFF make sure you roll it off to activate the cutoff switch for the cruise, the light should turn GREEN, release the throttle the light should turn RED. 6. Apply the front brake, the light should turn GREEN, release it, the light should turn RED. What you have done is test each of the SWITCHES that are in the cruise system. If, during any of the tests, the light does not turn GREEN, then that part is at fault.

so again i went outside and did all the diagnostic with light going from red to green an d all does. took it apart again and made sure the plunger is still there and plunges. no signs of frayed wire. stopped at a guy that does harley customizing in the neighborhood and he said he would change out the switch assembly. so either i spend the 200.00 and try and change it and hope its the problem or take it to the stealer and fork out more money to be certain. i have not found a video on line for the change out. anybody have a link to one ?

If you have external wiring, it's a breeze If you do. (Plug & Play) If you don't,good luck! The Plug is up in the fairing. Taking the fairing off is the longest part of the job.

I've got a 2019 RG Ultra. Just replaced the hand grips. Cruise control power light comes on orange but when I try to set it going down the road, it won't engage. Any advice as to what the problem may be?

Check to see if your brake light is stuck on . If it is , you broke the tit on the switch for the front brakes. The bike thinks the brake is being applied and wont let CC engage.

I fixed the issue with the brake lights. The throttle side was sticking so I took it all apart and now the light is not on anymore. The cruise still is not working.

Initializing the Cruise Control

harley cruise control module reset

  • Add to quote

I can't get my bike to initialize the cruise control. You know, the procedure in the service manual that takes all the slack out of the cruise cable. The procedure goes something like this: -Press and hold resume -turn cruise switch to "on" -turn ignition on -start bike and wait 3 seconds for cruise indicator light to go out That's where I run into a problem. The cruise indicator light never goes out. Anybody have any suggestions?

Stupid question but is the cruse switch in the on or off position?

"On" position. That is step 2 in the procedure.

Did some research and decided to disconnect the roll-off switch. Retried the initialization procedure to no avail. Now I'm getting a low idle situation. Been reading that the speed sensor can affect idle. WTF.

What was the reason why you were initializing the cruise? Had it apart? changed cables, etc. ?. Are the cables properly adjusted first and does the cruise work at all as it is? Possible failure of the module.

I had to have the dealer set the ecu, then the cruise cont. could be init. this was an 06 sg.

Interesting. I looked in my SEST, but didn't see any options or settings for cruise.

Finally got to take a test ride. Cruise works awesome! Fvck the initialization process. Seems every time I open up that service manual I get screwed. Now I just need to fix the idle. Ordered a VSS today. We'll see if that fixes it.

:woohoo:

That rolloff switch is normally closed,so if your ecu sees it open it thinks your not at idle and will keep trying to decrease your idle, place a jumper in the connectors you removed and see if your idle returns to normal. At the switch itself(the one on the cable) check for resistance ,with engine off ign off, roll your throttle up and down and see if the switch operates properly I.E. does it go from closed to open,if it doesnt ever close that cable needs to be replaced.if it does your cables may simply be misadjusted use this procedure. With a/c removed so you can see your throttle body loosen both cables at adjusters near throttle, twist throttle to full open have someone hold it or lock open, adj the pull cable to where the butterfly just opens fully, then adj the push cable for the proper amount of slack at throttle and your cruise should work.

Thanks Tom. I'll try this and post back the results. But I gotta say, it really surprises me that the ECU would use that shitty switch when it already has the TPS.

PikeSlayer, outside of having to remove tank, etc., how difficult was this install. Just ordered cruise for my 06 RK. Does cruise kit come with any instructions. Got shop manual and it's not specific reguarding install. Thanks

The hardest part is wiring up the hand controls. You might need the tool that lets you remove the pins from the connector. You may not though, depending on how complete the kit is. They quit making the kit for my bike, so I had to cob one together. Pretty sure the kits come with instructions. No need to remove the tank. Why Harley would make kits for the '06 and not the '07 is beyond me.

Update. Cruise works as long as the idle cable switch is disconnected. The switch is faulty. Still waiting on the VSS to arrive to see if that fixes the idle issue.

Don got any input on how to get rid of my little problem. cruise works.but every time I set it or hit resume,it it rev's up when it activates. it maintains the correct speed it just sounds like i cracked the throttle a little. it just started with the new motor and T/B.the reset didnt do anything for it. but then again the cruise light never went off during the reset until i let off the resume button. so it probably didnt reset.#Spankme@

got any ideas Don?

Just installed cruise on my '03 FLHTI and had the same problem. Check the part number on the Cruise module. The module in my kit was for an '04 Road King. Therebwere electrical changes between '03 and '04 so the modules are different. With proper module it works great.

Jim, Sorry I didn't get back to you, was out of town on a bike trip to the Smokies. My cruise has done that from day 1. My theory is that when you engage cruise, the servo motor is instructed to pull the cable a fixed amount. Let's say 1/16". The engines response to 1/16" of throttle on a stock or even a 95" motor is going to be different than a 117" or 120". This is only my theory. I actually like the surge. It lets me know for sure that it is engaged.

Kind of off topic, but my throttle cancel doesn't work on my cruise. And I think it would be nice to have a cancel button on the left handle bar. Since I took my horn off I think I will wire my horn button up to cancel the cruise. Good idea?

that might be a good location Don. I just use the front brake. I cant bring myself to ever use the roll off. it just feels unnatural. the cruise worked so smooth on the other builds,it just seems like with the new T/B and reset it isnt right. like I said I dont think it is resetting, when I run through the procedure. it is a pretty good rev when I engage it.

Table of Contents

What Are The Most Common Harley Davidson Electronic Throttle Control Problems?

Harley Davidson introduced the Electronic Throttle Control system in their 2008 models as a replacement for the traditional mechanical throttle cable system. This ride-by-wire technology has improved throttle response and made maintenance easier. However, it has also introduced a new set of challenges.

Example of the twist grip sensor that's used in Harley Davidson's electronic throttle control

Here are some common Electronic Throttle Control problems that Harley Davidson owners might encounter:

  • Limited Performance Mode : This mode is activated when the ETC system stops functioning correctly. It restricts certain features like acceleration, deceleration, cruise control, and engine braking to protect the rider and the bike.
  • Power Management Mode : This mode is triggered when the ETC detects a Problem with its sensors . It reduces throttle sensitivity and limits power delivery.
  • Forced Shutdown Mode : Some ETC issues can Force the engine to shut down completely, even while riding. This is often due to faulty wiring or programming.
  • Stuck Throttle : This is a common problem where the Throttle gets stuck and doesn’t respond.
  • Throttle Position Sensor Problems : The throttle position sensor (TPS) can cause issues, leading to poor engine performance, stalling, or Difficulty starting the bike .

How Do You Troubleshoot Electronic Throttle Control Issues on a Harley?

To diagnose ETC-related problems on your Harley Davidson, observe the bike’s performance and look for the symptoms mentioned earlier. These could indicate potential issues with the ETC system.

If your bike goes into Limited Performance Mode or Power Management Mode, check that the ETC system is connected correctly and the wiring harnesses are in good condition. Inspect all pulleys, gears, and sprockets for wear or damage and adjust throttle cables as necessary.

If your throttle gets stuck, inspect the throttle grips and clean them if they are contaminated with dust or dirt. Apply lubricant if the throttle cable seems dry or stiff.

For Throttle Position Sensor problems, turn off your bike and locate the TPS. Remove it from your throttle control system and check if it’s faulty. If so, replace it with a new one. If you see an error code, read the error code and clear the ECM memory. Related: Harley Speed Sensor Symptoms Get Revealed (+ Easy Fixes)

Can Electronic Throttle Control Failures Affect Harley’s Performance?

Yes, issues with the Electronic Throttle Control system can significantly affect a Harley’s performance. If the ETC is not working correctly, you may experience sudden acceleration, deceleration, engine stalling, or other performance issues.

If the bike enters Limited Performance Mode or Power Management Mode, it will reduce power output, limit the bike’s speed, and disable certain features like cruise control. This will obviously impact the bike’s performance and the overall riding experience.

What Causes Electronic Throttle Control Problems in Harley Davidson Motorcycles?

Several factors can cause ETC problems in Harley Davidson motorcycles:

  • Faulty Sensors or Wiring : If the ETC’s sensors or wiring are damaged or faulty, it can cause the system to malfunction.
  • Dirty Air Filter : A dirty air filter can cause the ETC to enter Power Management Mode as it disrupts the flow of air into the engine.
  • Poor Connections : Poor connections between the ETC components can also lead to system failures.
  • Damaged Components : If certain components of the ETC system become damaged or worn out over time, they can cause system malfunctions.
  • Software Issues : Sometimes, faulty programming or software issues can also cause ETC problems.

Are There Any Recalls Related to Harley Davidson’s Electronic Throttle Control?

As of the writing of this article, there have been no recalls specifically related to the Electronic Throttle Control system in Harley Davidson motorcycles. However, Harley Davidson has issued recalls for various other issues in the past. It’s always a good idea to check with your local Harley Davidson dealer or on their official website for any recent recalls that might affect your motorcycle model.

Is It Safe to Ride a Harley with a Malfunctioning Electronic Throttle Control?

Riding a Harley with a malfunctioning Electronic Throttle Control can be risky. If the throttle gets stuck while riding, it could lead to a loss of control and a potential accident. If the bike goes into Forced Shutdown Mode while riding at high speeds, it could also lead to a dangerous situation.

If you suspect that your bike’s ETC is malfunctioning, it’s essential to get it checked and fixed as soon as possible to ensure your safety on the road.

How to Repair Electronic Throttle Control Issues in Harley Davidsons?

To repair Electronic Throttle Control issues on your Harley Davidson, follow these steps:

  • Identify the problem: Look for symptoms like sudden acceleration or deceleration , engine stalling, or a stuck throttle. If your bike is in Limited Performance Mode or Power Management Mode, these are clear signs of ETC issues.
  • Check the ETC system : Make sure that the ETC system is connected correctly and the wiring harnesses are in good condition. Inspect all pulleys, gears, and sprockets for wear or damage.
  • Adjust throttle cables: If necessary, adjust throttle cables to ensure proper functionality. Check that the throttle cable is correctly routed from the hand grip and does not interfere with other components.
  • Clean and inspect the electrical components: Clean all electrical components related to the ETC system to prevent corrosion. Replace any components that have become damaged or worn out over time.
  • Consult a professional: If you’re not comfortable doing these repairs yourself, take your bike to a professional mechanic or a Harley Davidson dealership.

What Are the Symptoms of a Failing Electronic Throttle Control in a Harley?

If your Harley’s Electronic Throttle Control is failing, you might notice some of the following symptoms:

  • Sudden acceleration or deceleration
  • Engine stalling
  • The bike going into Limited Performance Mode or Power Management Mode
  • Throttle getting stuck
  • Poor engine performance
  • Difficulty starting the bike

How Much Does It Cost to Fix Electronic Throttle Control Problems on a Harley?

The cost to fix Electronic Throttle Control problems on a Harley Davidson can vary widely depending on the specific issue and whether you do the repairs yourself or take it to a professional. A new throttle position sensor can cost anywhere from $50 to $100, while labor costs at a dealership can range from $100 to $200 per hour. If the entire ETC system needs to be replaced, the cost could be significantly higher.

In conclusion, while Electronic Throttle Control problems can be frustrating and potentially dangerous, they are generally diagnosable and fixable. Regular maintenance and prompt attention to any issues can help keep your Harley Davidson running smoothly and ensure a safe and enjoyable riding experience .
