11 of the best beaches in Portugal
Nov 17, 2023 • 5 min read
It can be hard to choose from Portugal's many amazing beaches so allow us to be your guide © Prostock-Studio / Getty Images
Home to some of Europe’s most beautiful beaches, Portugal provides seaside escapes of every variety.
You can look forward to sandy islands lapped by cerulean seas, peaceful coves tucked near edge-of-the-earth sea cliffs, and dune-backed expanses facing some of the world’s most dramatic surfing spots. The challenge is deciding where to begin.
Although a list of the country’s best beaches could easily run into triple digits, we've narrowed it down to 11 of our absolute favorites. The time to start planning your next Portugal beach break is now.
1. Praia dos Galapinhos, Parque Natural da Arrábida
Less than an hour’s drive from Lisbon , you can find yourself amid the coastal wilderness of the Parque Natural da Arrábida . Here, forest-covered hillsides descend steeply to the shoreline, which is dotted with hidden coves and sparkling beaches. The most lovely is the Praia dos Galapinhos, which offers white sand and crystal-clear waters. The calm seas make it a great swimming spot.
2. Praia de Odeceixe, Odeceixe
Amid the wilder shores of the western Algarve , Praia de Odeceixe hits all the right notes, and the scenic headland-backed beach draws both families and surfers. Its unique location gives it surprising versatility. Lying at the mouth of the Rio Odeceixe, the beach has a sandy riverside section that’s perfect for splashing about without worrying about the pounding surf – ideal for small kids.
Planning tip: If it’s waves you seek, you’ll find them by strolling over to the ocean, where rideable breaks arrive year-round (though conditions are best in winter). Various surf academies – including Odeceixe Surf School – can help you hone your skills or teach you some new ones.
3. Praia Baleal, near Peniche
About 5km (3 miles) northeast of Peniche on Portugal’s west coast, Praia Baleal is a real showstopper of a beach. This stretch of sand is actually a causeway, linking the mainland to the scenic, island-like village of Baleal , which stands atop a craggy headland jutting from the Atlantic Ocean.
The fantastic sweep of sandy beach here offers swimming both to the north and south and some fine surfing. Surf schools and several restaurants are located along the beach.
4. Praia da Ilha de Tavira, Tavira
This huge beach at the eastern end of Ilha de Tavira – a long barrier island just off the country’s southern coast – boasts golden sands and inviting, clear waters, plus a sprinkling of beach bars, a windsurf school and a campground in summer (the only accommodation on the island). Outside the peak months of July and August, it feels wonderfully remote and empty.
Planning tip: Ferries make the 10-minute hop to the island from Quatro Águas , 2km (1.25 miles) southeast of Tavira , one of the Algarve’s most charming towns.
5. Praia da Falésia, near Albufeira
The Algarve has more than its fair share of breathtaking beaches , and this 6km-long (3.7 miles) strip of sand backed by stunning ochre-hued cliffs has to be one of its most impressive. Starting 8km (5 miles) east of Albufeira , this strand gets very crowded in summer , especially when the tide is in.
Planning tip: Head here in low season – November to March – with average highs of around 16°C (61°F), and the beach will be all yours.
6. Praia de São Jacinto, near Aveiro
Sandwiched between crashing Atlantic breakers and endless sand dunes, this magnificent beach forms the western flank of the São Jacinto nature reserve . It's a bit of a trek to get here, but the toil will be worth every second for those who like their beaches sandy, remote and rugged.
Planning tip: To get to Praia de São Jacinto, take a 20-minute bus journey from Aveiro to Forte da Barra, a ferry to São Jacinto, and then it's a brisk walk to the beach. Aveiro is only 50 minutes from Porto by train, so a visit to the beach can easily be done as a day trip from the city .
7. Praia do Cabedelo, Viana do Castelo
Near the country’s northern border with Spain, Viana do Castelo is blessed with an appealing medieval center, an attractive riverfront and lovely beaches just outside the city. The pick of the lot is Praia do Cabedelo, a 1km-long (0.6 mile) arc of powdery pale-golden sand that folds into grassy dunes backed by a grove of wind-blown pines.
Planning tip: It’s across the river from town, best reached on a five-minute ferry trip from the pier south of the Praça da Liberdade.
8. Praia das Furnas, Vila Nova de Milfontes
On the left bank of the Rio Mira on the coast of Portugal’s southern Alentejo region, Praia das Furnas is a long stretch of fine sand backed by small rocky cliffs. The sandbars in the area make for some relaxing frolicking in the waves – perfect for tiny travelers taking their first dip in the sea.
Planning tip: You can arrive here by car or take the small ferry from Vila Nova de Milfontes , a low-key resort town with lots of charm.
9. Praia do Camilo, Lagos
Praia do Camilo is a prime example of the small sandy coves that dot the coastline of the Algarve region. The small, dramatically set beach is located on the outskirts of Lagos , a pretty resort town with cobbled lanes and picturesque squares enclosed by 16th-century walls.
Planning tip: Some 200 wooden steps help beachgoers descend to the golden strip of sand that’s lapped by shallow turquoise waters and encased by wind-gnarled cliffs. Arrive early (or visit out of peak season) to secure towel space.
10. Costa da Caparica, near Lisbon
One of the easiest beach escapes near Lisbon, the Costa da Caparica on the Setúbal Peninsula has a seemingly never-ending beach that attracts sun-worshiping lisboêtas craving all-over tans, surfers keen to ride Atlantic waves and day-tripping families seeking clean water and soft sand.
It hasn’t escaped development, yet a short distance to the south, high-rises soon give way to pine forests and mellow beach-shack cafes.
11. Praia do Norte, Nazaré
An underwater canyon off the coast of northern Portugal creates ideal conditions for some of the biggest swells on Earth. You can watch these monsters roll in at Praia do Norte, a wild beach backed by dunes located a few kilometers north of the seaside town of Nazaré .
The Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo has a roof terrace for taking in the oceanic drama, and it also contains a small museum about the big waves and some of the surfers who’ve ridden them – like Sebastian Steudtner, who rode a record-breaking 26.2m (86ft) behemoth back in 2020.

5 unique ways to discover Jersey’s coastline
Jersey's varied coast is a playground for sea-lovers, home to sheltered sandy coves ideal for swimming, golden surfing beaches and rugged cliff-top hiking paths.
There are plenty of ways for visitors to channel their inner seafarer in Jersey, from kayaking, surfing, swimming or simply enjoying the coast on foot. Jersey is the closest Channel Island to France and is small in size, with only nine miles of land east to west and five miles north to south. Yet, its coastal circumference is 43 miles, making it feel like there are more beaches than land. The expanse of Jersey’s coastline is particularly felt when the tide goes out, almost doubling the island’s size twice a day. Whether visitors are seeking adventure, relaxation or exploration, here are five ways to enjoy the island's coastal reaches.
1. Take the plunge
With over 30 beaches and bays — from rocky coves in the north to sweeping sandy beaches in the south — visitors would have to stay on the island for a very long time to swim in all locations. However, a swim has to be planned around the tides as Jersey has one of the highest tidal ranges in the world, and when it’s out, it completely disappears from view. If the tide is high in the morning, visitors can head east to sandy Grouville or pebbly Archirondel for a swim. If the tide is high in the evening, a paddle at St Brelade or St Ouen offers the chance to see a spectacular sunset.
Cold-water swimming is popular on the island, with many claiming it increases their mental and physical wellbeing. There are plenty of swimming clubs on the island that visitors can join such as the Jersey-based group Dips and Chips , an inspiring female collective that takes to the sea year-round, no matter the weather. Its members share a real sense of camaraderie as they enjoy an invigorating cold-water paddle before catching up afterwards over a warm coffee. Booking a communal session at Sauna Society , a woodfired sauna on St Catherine’s Bay, is another excellent experience for those looking to feel rejuvenated. Visitors get 50 minutes to cycle between a hot sauna, a cold plunge shower or even a refreshing dip in the sea.
2. Tour the island by boat
Whether visitors feel like speeding along the coast in a fast rigid-inflatable boat (RIB) or slowly sailing from bay to bay, a boat tour of Jersey’s coast allows people to see the island from a new perspective. With Jersey Seafaris , a one-hour south coast tour or a one-and-a-half north-coast tour can be booked on its 12-passenger RIB. The tours are packed with local history and information about the island, and visitors may be lucky enough to spot dolphins playfully racing alongside the boat.
For those looking for a more laid-back experience, a sunset cruise on the Jersey Duchess is just as enjoyable. The boat travels along the southwest coast to Corbière Lighthouse as the setting sun casts a golden glow over the water. Those looking to splash out can charter Longueville Manor ’s luxury yacht Fizz Too , which comes with a seafood lunch, Champagne and a personal steward.
3. Paddle along the coast
Standup paddleboarding (SUP) has become a hugely popular sport in Jersey, with many locals taking to the water to unwind after a day in the office. If visitors want to join them, they can hire an inflatable paddleboard from Windmadness , Absolute Adventures or Jono Watersports in St Brelade’s Bay or from Jersey Adventures at Archirondel. For beginners, a one-hour lesson can be booked with Absolute Adventures, or a SUP yoga session can be booked with Windmadness for the more advanced. For a real taste of island life, visitors can join a SUP evening tour from St Brelade’s Bay to the Portelet Bay Cafe , where they can stop to enjoy a pizza on the beach.
If sitting seems more appealing, visitors can try a kayak tour instead. Jersey Adventures has an exhilarating east coast tour from Archirondel to Mont Orgueil Castle and back. Jersey Kayak Adventures and Kayak Nomad also offers sea kayak tours at varying locations around the island, with the departure point confirmed by text the night before.
4. Unwind on the clifftops
With the heady scent of gorse in the air and the sun bouncing off the granite cliffs, creating twinkles in the sea below, a walk along Jersey’s coastal path is a beautiful experience. Visitors can join the path from one of the northern bays — Rozel or Bouley Bay — and continue to weave around the cliffs or explore one of five self-guided walks on the Visit Jersey website. A tea break is never more than a 40-minute walk away, and the day can be punctuated with refreshing dips in the sea. Jersey is an aspiring UNESCO Geopark , and among the activities the Geopark team organise are wellness sessions at L’Etacquerel Fort on the north coast, where groups can enjoy a yoga class whilst admiring a stunning cliff-top view.
5. Surf the island’s best waves
Whatever the weather, whatever the season, if there is surf in St Ouen’s Bay (and there usually is), then local surfers will be out catching a wave. The first Jersey Surf Club was set up in 1923, making it among the first in Europe, and the island went on to become a hugely popular surf spot in the 1960s, partly fuelled by local board manufacturing. Photographs that line the walls at surfers’ hang-out, the Watersplash show St Ouen’s Bay packed with surfers gathering to compete in the European surf championships in the late 1960s.
Next to the Watersplash, the sea has some of the cleanest breaks on the island, and there are good spots further down the bay, too, at Le Braye and Secrets. The north-coast beaches, such as Grève de Lecq and Plémont, also provide reputable conditions. Jersey has several surf schools for those looking to learn to surf or improve their skills. The Splash Surf Centre , Jersey Surf School , and Laneez Surf School all offer lessons from basic to advanced levels and summer camps for kids.

7 best cruises for seniors who love to travel by sea
T he best senior cruises mix adult-focused onboard activities with fascinating destinations ashore. No two retirees want the same thing from their travels. However, generally, most seniors have time to dedicate to longer itineraries.
Some have saved their money to enjoy a more premium cruise ship experience, but all are happy to snap up a cruise deal or find a promotion offering increased value from their cruise booking.
How did we choose the top cruises for seniors? We prioritized cruise lines that target couples and adults, rather than families, as well as cruise ships with fine dining, grownup entertainment and plenty of opportunities to socialize. We looked for destination-intensive cruises offering immersive cultural opportunities, bucket-list itineraries and a range of sailing lengths.
We dismissed the huge ships with their whiz-bang top-deck attractions, although these are ideal for grandparents on a multigenerational holiday with family. We also skipped the small expedition ships that require a level of physical fitness not all seniors possess.
For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .
Based on those criteria, here are the seven best cruise lines for seniors who love to travel and are looking to spend more time at sea.
Viking 's 930-passenger ocean ships top our list of the best cruises for seniors because they are designed specifically for an adult crowd. No one younger than 18 is allowed on board, and all the programming is created with passengers aged 50-plus in mind.
These cruises are ideal for academic-minded seniors. Viking chairman Torstein Hagen says that he set out to create "the thinking person's cruise," and lectures and other destination-specific programming are the main form of entertainment on board. That doesn't mean Viking cruises are boring, though. In fact, the crowd-pleasing ABBA tribute show in the theater is not to be missed.
Viking ships are comfortable, homey oases done up in sophisticated Scandinavian decor.
Itineraries are focused on getting senior cruisers to key attractions around the world, including UNESCO World Heritage Sites, with a shore excursion each day included in the cruise fare. Thrifty retirees will appreciate the "no nickel and diming" philosophy and cruise fares that cover everything except cocktails and spa treatments.
Complimentary dining includes a specialty Italian restaurant and the Chef's Table, with its rotating tasting menus themed around international cuisines.
Related: What's included in your cruise fare?
Also recommended for the senior and baby boomer crowd are Viking's river ships in Europe , Vietnam and Egypt (among other destinations) and the line's expedition products in Antarctica and on the Great Lakes , which have similarities to the ocean ships, including the all-inclusive pricing.
Windstar Cruises
Windstar 's small sailing ships and motorized yachts range from 148 to 342 passengers. Although kids 8 and older are allowed on board, you are unlikely to see many on these upscale vessels. Most Windstar cruisers are active seniors who come as couples, pairs of friends or solo travelers, looking for a destination-rich experience on ships where they won't feel lost in a crowd.
Windstar has two classes of ships. Older couples celebrating a milestone anniversary should choose a sailing ship, with its vast open deck space and picturesque sails that set the mood for romance. Seniors who prefer more personal space should seek out the 312-passenger motorized yachts with their all-suite accommodations.
Related: A beginner's guide to picking a cruise line
Cruise highlights on all ships include an outdoor deck party with a lavish buffet and late-night conga line, as well as meals created by James Beard Foundation-affiliated chefs. (Windstar partners with the prestigious culinary organization.)
Because of their small size, all Windstar ships can visit quiet harbors and out-of-the-way places that big ships can't in destinations like Tahiti, the Mediterranean and the Caribbean .
Azamara Cruises
With four nearly identical ships holding fewer than 700 passengers each, Azamara has carved out a niche catering to well-traveled seniors looking to cruise in clubby surroundings.
The line's cruises are best for seniors who don't want to splurge on a fancier luxury product but still want an upscale level of ambiance, service and amenities. While kids aren't banned, the line makes clear on its website that it "discourages" passengers younger than 18.
Azamara passengers appreciate the boutique hotel-like decor, which includes faux fireplaces in the impressive libraries, called The Drawing Room on each vessel.
The line's destination-focused itineraries in Europe and elsewhere spend more time in ports than average ships, staying overnight in key destinations. This is ideal for passengers who want to explore on their own. The line also offers a complimentary "AzAmazing Evenings" program on every cruise. They feature cultural performances ashore in amazing destinations, such as Turkey's ancient city of Ephesus.
Related: 5 best adults-only cruise lines
Holland America
Holland America is one of the best cruise lines for seniors because it hits the sweet spot with its midsize ships. Carrying 2,668 passengers or fewer, these vessels offer big-ship amenities but lack the more over-the-top waterslides and thrill attractions found on megaships. The line is a great choice for baby boomers and older seniors who wish to enjoy the line's alternative dining options, casinos and choice of entertainment.
An older crowd does not mean a sedate group. Holland America hosts live music in a big way. Passengers dance the night away at venues that include B.B. King's Blues Club, featuring some of the best live bands at sea. Explorations Central (EXC) programming is designed to educate passengers about the destinations they visit, and a fun roster of other onboard pursuits includes a winemaking experience with Chateau Ste. Michelle.
The ships are also particularly accessible. Many staterooms offer roll-in showers and other assistive features. Vessels also are equipped with a lift system for pools and tenders.
Related: The 4 classes of Holland America ships, explained
In addition to one-week cruises in the Caribbean and Alaska (the line's specialty), Holland America explores South America, the South Pacific and other destinations around the globe. The line also offers months-long world cruises.
Senior travelers with a penchant for traditional cruising will find Cunard 's ocean liners to be a top cruise option. Founded in 1840, the cruise line has a long legacy and is proud of its less casual vibe, which includes nightly dress codes. Go old-school with dress-up galas held in real ballrooms with high ceilings and twinkling chandeliers. Gentlemen hosts are on hand if ladies need a dance partner.
Those same ballrooms host daily afternoon tea, complete with finger sandwiches and scones with cream, served on fine china by white-gloved waiters. Other refined onboard activities include watching shows in Queen Mary 2's onboard planetarium, attending lectures by guest speakers, fencing, taking art classes and enjoying classical concerts.
Not everyone stays in a fancy suite, but seniors ready to splurge should book either Queens Grill or Princess Grill rooms for upscale accommodations and meals served in exclusive, intimate restaurants.
QM2 is the only ship that offers regular transatlantic service between Southampton, England, and New York. The 2,081-passenger Queen Elizabeth and 2,061-passenger Queen Victoria spend time in Europe and other destinations, and all three ships offer world cruises around the globe. When it debuts in 2024, the line's 3,000-passenger Queen Anne will also sail in the Mediterranean.
Regent Seven Seas Cruises
Retirees who have worked hard and are ready to treat themselves right will find that Regent Seven Seas Cruises is one of the best cruises for seniors looking for luxury.
The cruise line brags of operating the most luxurious ships afloat. It's hard to argue that point, especially on the line's latest ship, $545 million, 746-passenger, all-suite Seven Seas Grandeur. The ship boasts a football field's worth of marble, an impressive art collection and one of the most expensive suites at sea — a Regent Suite, which is priced at $11,000 per day, per couple.
Other high-end lines, such as Seabourn and Silversea , operate intimate ships with extraordinary service, accommodations and cuisine. However, Regent differs with its shore excursion-inclusive, one-stop-shopping fares and grand European hotel ambience — especially on the sister ships Seven Seas Splendor and Seven Seas Explorer.
Related: 12 best all-inclusive cruise lines
The other Regent ships are well-maintained 480- to 684-passenger older vessels. On all, if you don't feel like going to one of the restaurants, you can stay in your bathrobe and order a meal served course by course in your suite.
Also, except for summer and holiday periods, you are unlikely to find kids on board.
Regent sails to some 450 ports of call around the world, including world cruise itineraries, so senior travelers can find sailings to all the destinations they've been waiting to explore.
Oceania Cruises
Wellness-focused seniors love Oceania Cruises ' 648- to 1,210-passenger ships for their spa and fitness center and healthy food options. Foodies are drawn by the inspired dining. PBS host and cookbook author Jacques Pepin has a French bistro on the line's two largest ships, Marina and Riviera, and he's one of the line's culinary advisors. All the line's ships include impressive steakhouses , and some feature Red Ginger, an extraordinary modern take on Asian cuisine, as well as other eateries.
The ships provide an appealing country club-like ambiance, which is upscale without being fancy. Older passengers tend to be the sort who like to entertain themselves, though they might be distracted by the standout attraction of a real cooking school where expert chefs give classes on Marina and Riviera.
As a nod to solo travelers, the line is in the process of adding solo cabins designed and priced for one.
Oceania is known for destination-focused itineraries in the Caribbean, Alaska and Europe, among other places. Most are 10 nights or longer; world cruises are up to 180 days.
Bottom line
You'll find seniors on nearly every cruise line out there. Some older travelers are looking to explore the world, while others prefer cheap trips to beachy destinations.
Everyone's top choice will be different, but we think these seven lines represent the best senior cruises. They prioritize an adult-focused onboard experience and destination-intensive itineraries more readily accessible to retirees.
