Review of Grand Circle Cruise Line

One of the industry's  small cruise companies , GCCL-Grand Circle Cruise Line (gct.com) was established in 1958 as a travel company serving the American Association of Retired People (AARP). Since then, Grand Circle has expanded as an independent cruise company offering meaningful experiences for the "over-50's". Today GCCL offers a full range of cruise tours and land tour programs. The company's main business is discounted, extended-stay travel vacation programs in Europe, most occurring during winter in the south of Spain. Grand Circle also provides escorted tours all around the world, with a strong emphasis on enrichment.

Grand Circle Cruise Line logo

In 1985 the company was acquired by Alan and Harriet Lewis. They took operations to higher levels by building on the company's original base and expanding the destinations and offerings available. A continuing feature has been the right decision to avoid public advertising, focusing on referrals, past guests and direct requests for information. The Program Directors of the company started out as resident hosts, lecturers, and guides and developed over the years into hallmark service for the Grand Circle company. With each new program and destination, regional offices were opened across the globe, providing support and monitoring operations in an area. The new options often came at request or suggestion of past passengers, who form sort of an "alumni" association.

Starting in 1997, the company began promoting European river sailings on partially or fully chartered ships to its clientele. Due to the enthusiastic response, Grand Circle tried to ensure both excellent qualities of the product and control of the operations by deciding to have its own ships built - River Symphony was the first one in 1998, followed by a series of constantly improved ships over the years in various regions of the Mediterranean, Europe, Russia, and Egypt. Grand Circle also runs chartered operations in Antarctica, Europe, Panama, China, and Burma, under both the Overseas Adventure and Grand Circle brands.

Along with the current operations, mention should be made of company's sense of commitment to responsible tourism in the regions where it operates. During the last 20 years, the Grand Circle Foundation has committed more than US$92 million to advance education and preserving cultural traditions. In Egypt's Valley of the Kings, Grand Circle has funded the construction of shade/information pavilions to make the travel experience more worthwhile. The Foundation also supports around 100 schools in 30 different countries.

Grand Circle Cruise Experience

Grand Circle Cruise Line offers a full range of small-ship cruises for the over-50 set.

As with all Grand Circle Cruise Line's programs, company's passengers are over 50, in some cases even much more so. The line doesn't market to families and doesn't accept kids as passengers. Its guests are generally well traveled, with large percentage repeat passengers and members of their Inner Circle loyalty program, an organization for those who have made 3 or more trips with the line. The majority of passengers are married couples, though clusters of friends sailing together and singles are not unusual. Given Grand Circle's focus on learning experiences, most of the company's guests are open-minded and curious, eager to try new things.

Since Grand Circle is an American cruise line and generally does whole-ship trips, the language of the day at all times is the English. The crews, and most especially the company's Program Directors, are at the very least conversationally fluent. Most of Grand Circle passengers are Americans or American-connected.

While the ships of the line are designed for the regions in which they operate, they are as much about comfort as a destination. All cabins are well-appointed and quite spacious. On the ships operating in Western Europe, the upper-deck staterooms have true balconies, while the lower decks feature large windows. Generally, Grand Circle's Europe-based ships have twin beds only. Shipboard bathrooms are excellently fitted out, and rooms are kept spotless. CNN, movies, alternative music, and language channels are available, along with line's onboard info channel.

Dining is also professionally handled. Depending on the ship, there is a mix of a buffet (breakfast and lunch) and served (dinner). Though menu options vary, regional and local specialties are always included. Specialty evenings are also offered - for example, an Egyptian buffet - depending on the itinerary.

General entertainment is casual and low-key. Nobody goes on a cruise by Grand Circle for bingo or karaoke, though both may be offered. Sometimes there may be a costume night, black-and-white dress evening, or passenger talent show.

The real focus of any voyage by Grand Circle Cruise Line is the chance to experience other histories, traditions, cultures, and people. Through excursions ashore and onboard lectures, meals and talks with local people, demonstrations by or visits with local artisans, passengers truly have the chance to expand their understanding and knowledge of other places.

Itinerary of Grand Circle Cruise Line

Currently, Grand Circle Cruise Line's fleet includes the following vessels:

  • MV Clio (Tere Moana)
  • MV Athena (currently CMV Astoria - CMV charter)
  • MV Artania (Phoenix Reisen charter)
  • MS Provence barge
  • MS River Anuket

Note: You can see the CruiseMapper's list of all river cruise ships and riverboats in the "itinerary" section of our River Cruises hub. All river passenger shipping line companies and their fleets are listed there.

Grand Circle cruises to Cuba

Grand Circle Cruise Line offers Cuba cruises on the MV Clio ship (former Tere Moana). The itineraries are 11-nights in length, leaving one-way from Miami Florida to Havana , or the reverse from Havana to Miami. The sailing part is 7 days, visiting the Cuban ports of call Caibarien, Cienfuegos, Matanzas, Remedios, Santiago de Cuba, Trinidad. Passengers will disembark in port Cienfuegos and will be transported overland to the capital Havana (with included 3-night hotel stay there). Then cruise passengers fly back to the USA. The reverse 11-night itinerary starts in Havana and ends in Miami.

  • Grand Circle Cruise Line's Cuba cruise prices start at USD 6,800 pp. fares are inclusive of visas, accommodations, meals, guided land tours, gratuities, port fees, airfare (Miami-Havana, or Havana-Miami), also of airport transfers in Miami.
  • The 89-passenger MV Clio (formerly known as Tere Moana) was acquired in 2015 from Paul Gauguin Cruises. Grand Circle invested over USD 5 million in the following refurbishment. The vessel entered into service in May 2016.

The list of passenger shipping lines offering cruises to Cuba included:

  • Carnival Paradise leaving from Tampa Florida - cheapest prices (from USD 480 pp)
  • Royal Caribbean (ship Empress of the Seas , leaving from Miami Florida)
  • Holland America (ship Veendam ) leaving from Fort Lauderdale since December 2017
  • MSC Cruises (ship MSC Opera , leaving from Havana)
  • Oceania Cruises (ships Marina and Regatta ) starting in 2017, Cuba circumnavigation, stops in Cienfuegos and Havana, also part of some Panama Canal transition itineraries.
  • NCL (ship Norwegian Sky , 4-day itineraries with Havana overnights - starting May 2017
  • Azamara Cruises (ship on Azamara Quest from Miami)

  • Pearl Seas Cruises (ship Pearl Mist , leaving from Fort Lauderdale Florida)
  • Lindblad Expeditions (chartered sailing ship MS Panorama II, leaving from Havana)
  • Celestyal Cruises (ship Celestyal Crystal , leaving from Havana and Montego Bay Jamaica)
  • International Expeditions (leaving from Havana, charter flights out of Miami)
  • Victory Cruise Lines - MS Victory I - fly-cruises from Miami to Havana (home-port Cienfuegos /departures)

Note: According to the current Cuban law, US citizens of Cuban origin (born in Cuba) are not allowed to visit the island country (including on cruise ships). Regardless of their US citizenship status, Cuban-born Americans were denied booking on cruise itineraries visiting ports in Cuba. However, the situation changed in April 2016, after Carnival Corporation negotiated with the Cuban government for allowing ships with Cuban-born passengers, as such US citizens are allowed to visit the country on USA-Cuba charter flights. The Carnival-fathom line started Miami to Cuba cruises in May 2016.

Alaska Airlines offers regular nonstop flights to Havana from Los Angeles (California USA). An 80-min ling JetBlue flight from Fort Lauderdale (Florida) to Havana costs less than USD 100. Previously, air travel from the USA to Cuba was thought charter flights only.

Conducted in broad daylight, this evening tour from Reykjavík takes you across the Mosfellsheidi Heath to beautiful Thingvellir National Park -- a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a primary site of Iceland's geological and historical heritage.

Walk through a massive geological fault to the place where Europe's oldest national legislative assembly, the Icelandic Althing, was established in AD 930. Astonishingly, it convened here in grandiose surroundings every summer for nearly eight centuries.

Your tour continues over the Lyngdalsheidi Heath into the fertile farmlands of the south to visit perhaps Iceland's most beautiful waterfall -- Gullfoss.

Nearby is the truly fascinating Geysir geothermal area, with its many hot springs. The most active geyser spouts every few minutes and is riveting to watch.

A two-course dinner and coffee are served at a restaurant nearby.

Returning through the Grímsnes region, you will also pass Hveragerdi Village, where geothermal water has been used to build an extensive greenhouse industry.

Enjoy a panoramic drive to Reykjavík via Hellisheidi with a short stop at the Hellisheidi Power Plant .

Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes. Guests who prefer to stay on the coach may do so at most stops; however, all guests must leave the coach during the driver's break. Guests using a cane, walker, or manual collapsible wheelchair must be able to negotiate a few steps to (dis)embark the coach. Collapsible wheelchairs/scooters can be stored on the coach; full measurements of the wheelchair/scooter must be provided to the tour staff on board the ship at least 48 hours prior to arrival in Reykjavík. Most attractions are wheelchair/scooter accessible; please be mindful that accessible areas may offer a slightly different angle/point-of-view than other guests may encounter. The dinner venue is wheelchair accessible.

We've just scheduled our 10th river cruise and our first with Grand Circle. There doesn't seem to be a Grand Circle focused thread, so I'm starting this one. I don't see a lot of GCT cruisers on the Forum, but maybe this tread will encourage more postings and reviews.

I get their catalogs, and they appear to be reasonably priced and solo friendly.  I'll be following this thread.  Thank you for starting it.

I’ve done 5 river cruises with GCT ( and two with Uniworld).  Do you have any particular questions?  I’ve not done the cruise you’re booked on, though.

Thanks. I don't have questions right now, but I suspect that I'll have some as the departure date approaches.

CPT Trips

We are regular GCT river cruisers and have done most of their European river cruises. Our only other river cruise was with Vantage. More recently we have done several of the small ship ocean/coastal cruises of their other brand, OAT.

Both GCT & OAT have discussion forums on their website. Unfortunately few of those posters visit here. They certainly don't have a large footprint in the river cruise market.

What I enjoy is their touring model. They use onboard program directors/tour leaders who each have a smaller group for the entire cruise as well as any hotel stay. They also utilize local guides as it seems all the other lines do. The PDs/TLs offer additional "learning and discovery" activities on shore. Also, as their cruises tend to be a longer duration for the same distance they overnight in a few cities which provides additional opportunities to explore.

I was attracted to GCT for these very reasons. Their Seine cruise is a one-way, 11-night cruise instead of the typical 7-night Paris-to-Paris itinerary. Also, the ship docks in Honfleur rather than busing passengers there. We're doing a pre-cruise extension in the Loire Valley, and it's our understanding that the PD accompanying us on that extension will be our PD for the entire cruise.

You mentioned the Forums on the GCT site. They don't seem to be very active. Interestingly there are only 6 reviews of our cruise on CruiseCritic, whereas there are over 500 reviews of the same cruise on GCT's web site.

IN all likelihood, the PD on the pre will be your PD on the rest of the trip. The only occasion we experienced anything different was when there were more people on the pre trip than there will be in each of the groups on the ship. If the pre trip group is smaller, then people will probably be added once the main trip starts. They seem to like similarly sized groups.

Another plus for us on our GCT Seine cruise was that the ship docked right in Paris, rather than outside of town as a few other lines did.  Although the docking site could change,  ours was two metro stops north (?I think) of the Eiffel Tower stop, with just a short walk from the ship to the Metro.  So close that we walked back to the ship along the Seine from the tower.  (Yes, we visited- we're true tourists!).

We took the optional excursion to Versailles, and I took the optional excursion to see the Bayeux  tapestry while DH (CPT Trips) enjoyed a lunch of mussels in Honfleur.  We recommend both.

I’m currently on GCTs Rhine and Moselle presidents cruise (my 14th).  I had a talk with the president of GCCL about the companies selling their boats (two more sold this year).  He replied the will now have only three ships doing the Rhine, Moselle and Danube cruises plus the two ships in France.  With all the competition, they feel they can put out a better product with fewer ships.  Personally, I’ve had no problems with their product for the last 18 years.

It looks like their remaining ships are:

  • MS Bizet on the Seine (built 2002) 120 passengers
  • River Chanson on the Rhone (built 2001) 86 passengers
  • River Aria (built 2001) 162 passengers
  • River Adagio (built 2003) 162 passengers
  • River Harmony (built 1999) 140 passengers

Given the age of the ships, they should be close to being fully depreciated. This plus the fact that GCT doesn't use travel agents should make them a low cost operator. Is your ship showing it's age? How well has it been maintained?

I was on the Harmony and it looked brand new.  The captain said the engines, generator, and other mechanical facilities were replaced and/or upgraded two years ago.

Hi!  Going on the Oct. 20 Great Rivers of Europe GCT trip beginning in Vienna. Have never been in GCT before, but have been on several Overseas Adventure Travel land trips. I agree very little reviews etc. on either CC or the GCT website (which is pretty lame in general as far S traveler participation. Looking forward to the trip. Have only done one other riverboat trip (Uniworld B to B in France). Not expecting great luxury on this trip but interesting sounding itineraries and a good value for money.

That itinerary was our very first river cruise. Loved it and did all theIr European River itineraries since then.

Not luxe physically, but service is top notch. Crew, particularly waitstaff, will know your name and your preferences in very short order.

One difference you'll notice is that the groups are larger than on OAT trips. Basic things like loading and unloading bus will take longer.

On River Aria now. Having a great time. No, not deluxe but great service and nice people. We have been lucky with weather and no interruptions with low water levels.

Wish I was there. 😃

We've done five European river cruises with GCT, plus a recent Great Britain bus tour with them.  All of the trips have been great, with excellent program directors, nice accommodations, great people all around.  And, great prices.  For comparison we did one Viking trip on the Elbe, which of course, turned into a bus trip although we stayed on two identical Viking ships docked on the Elbe (Dresden and Wittenberg).  The difference in how we were treated by the two companies when we need to solve problems was like night and day.  The folks at GCT have their act together, while Viking's customer relations stunk.

I totally agree. Wonderful service and nice people on the boat. We had a great time. And there was an elderly gentleman who was trying to take this same itinerary for the third time. Both other times the river level didn’t cooperate. he said that Grand Circle treated him really well in compensation both times.

WE are taking the the Christmas Market cruise on the Danube in December.  We have taken more than a few trips with GCT and OAT, river cruises. Small ship adventures Including Antartica were great.  Land trips to Spain and Australia.  The Program Directors were

knowledgeable and professional in all cases. And the ships staff was great.

  • 1 month later...

We have done 14 trips between OAT and GCT and find them to be very good.  The river ships are not exceptionally glamorous, but are spotlessly clean and very well maintained - no worn carpeting, curtains or linens anywhere to be seen.  The crews and program directors are uniformly exceptional.  What sets them apart from other cruise lines is their friendliness.  We were just on the River Aria for a Christmas Market cruise and the wait staff could not have been friendlier or eager to please and make you laugh.  The cook who does omelets and fried eggs in the morning learned my wife's preferences on day one and by day two did not even have to be told - he started to make them to her specifications as soon as he saw her coming.  Having four program directors allows for personalized relationship rather than what you would get with Viking having only one for the entire ship.  They are also given the flexibility to make minor modifications to the ships schedule if there is something special going on in a particular port that would otherwise be missed.

We have our first river cruise scheduled for next fall.  I have a few questions.

Tips for local tour guides and bus drivers are included based on what I have read.  Is there a stated amount for ship staff like what they have on an ocean cruise?  Is it typically paid in cash or can it be charged?  What is customary for the program director?  Anyone else we should be sure to take care of?

How expensive is it to do laundry on the ship?  I can’t fit 17 days of clothes in a suitcase.

How are the pillows.  I almost always take my own, but no room this time.

I am sure I’ll have more questions as time gets closer.

There will be a suggested per person per day gratuity for the ship staff.  There will also be a suggested gratuity for the program director...I think usually $7-10 per person per day for the program director.  I’ve got 16 trips with OAT or GCT and only once did I not think the maximum was deserved.  Cash will be required, either local or US currency, I often do a combination.  Laundry is reasonably priced.  Pillows were fine but I’m not fussy.

You will receive your "Final Document Booklet"  about a month before your cruise.  We actually received an online copy first, then a paper copy.  The booklet clearly spells out all the financial issues ( tips- to whom, how much, which currency, etc.) so you can be prepared before you leave.  It also includes a daily breakdown of the final itinerary, helpful hints, contact numbers, etc.  All that you need to know!

Laundry- we never used their laundry.  On occasion, we have washed up a shirt or pair of socks in the sink and hung them in the shower. GCT is not fancy- so packing is easier than for an upscale ocean cruise.  (Skip the heels and fancy clothes, suits, etc.) We layer and try to stick to a basic mix-and-match color scheme.

Pillows- I, too, love my own pillow.  However, I've never had an issue on-board any of their ships (although I'm usually very tired after each active day!).  I do bring my own pillow cases to slip over their's - just in case they use scented soap.

One thing to consider for your packing is that your attire for a day of touring is perfectly appropriate for the evening on board ship.

GCT has a forum on their website. Although it isn’t very active, compared to here, but you might want to inquire over there.

25+ Club

The ships have a laundry bag and list of prices in the closet. You pay by the piece. My husband loves this service and always uses it. About half way through the cruise they have a laundry “special” about 20% off.

I always change for dinner. Having a nice top is needed at their two special dinners. Men don’t need a sport coat, but a button down shirt works. You won’t see jeans in the dining room at dinner.

The Ultimate Guide To Driving The Golden Circle

Buckle up, fellow adventurers, because we’re about to embark on an epic journey through one of Iceland ‘s most iconic road trip routes – the Golden Circle!

Picture this: geysers shooting hot water skyward, majestic waterfalls crashing into ancient riverbeds, and tectonic plates doing a slow-motion dance that’s been going on for millennia. Whether you’re a seasoned road warrior or a first-time visitor to the Land of Fire and Ice, driving the Golden Circle is a must-do adventure that promises jaw-dropping scenery, fascinating history, and a whole lot of fun.

In this ultimate guide, I’ll show you how to make the most of your Golden Circle adventure. From navigating the route like a pro and discovering hidden gems along the way, to insider tips on the best photo spots and where to grab a delicious Icelandic hot dog (trust me, it’s a thing), I’ve got you covered!

So grab your camera, crank up your favorite road trip playlist, and get ready for an unforgettable ride through the heart of Iceland’s natural wonders. Let’s hit the road and explore the Golden Circle like never before!

The Ultimate Guide To Driving The Golden Circle

What’s The Golden Circle in Iceland?

The Golden Circle is one of Iceland’s most popular tourist routes , offering an incredible showcase of the country’s diverse natural beauty and geological wonders.

This approximately 300-kilometer (186-mile) loop from Reykjavik takes travelers through three of Iceland’s most iconic attractions, each providing a unique and memorable experience.

And while most Golden Circle tours focus on visiting just the three main sights, there are so many more gorgeous places to discover along this short stretch in Iceland!

In this article I’ll even share one of the most beautiful waterfalls that’s located right outside of the Golden Circle but definitely worth the short detour!

The best time to drive the Golden Circle

The best time to drive the Golden Circle in Iceland depends on the type of experience you desire, as each season offers unique advantages .

Summer (June to August) provides nearly 24 hours of daylight, mild temperatures, and lush green landscapes, making it ideal for hiking and outdoor activities. However, it is also the peak tourist season, so attractions can be crowded.

Autumn (September to November) offers fewer crowds, stunning fall colors, and cooler weather, along with increasing chances of seeing the Northern Lights as the nights grow longer. Do know that even at the start of November snowfall can already occur.

Winter (December to February) transforms the Golden Circle into a winter wonderland with snow-covered landscapes and frozen waterfalls, offering a serene experience with excellent opportunities to view the Northern Lights. However, driving conditions can be challenging due to icy roads and limited daylight.

Spring (March to May) sees the landscape coming to life with budding trees and early wildflowers, moderate crowds, and milder temperatures, making it a pleasant time for exploration. Regardless of the season, starting your journey early, dressing in layers, and checking weather and road conditions are essential for a safe and enjoyable trip.

How long do you need to drive the Golden Circle?

This totally depends on how much time you have to spend in Iceland in total. If you’re only here for 1 week you can even tick off the main attractions of the Golden Circle in half a day. Leaving you with enough time to explore the Icelandic Ring Road or the Icelandic Highlands .

The loop is approximately 300 kilometers (186 miles) and can be driven in about 3.5 to 4 hours without stops. However, to fully enjoy each site, plan for a total of 6 to 8 hours, including travel time .

If you’re in Iceland for 2 weeks I recommend spending two days exploring the Golden Circle. This way you’ll have enough time to explore all of the highlights and include some of the lesser known but equally epic sights! You’ll have enough time to incorporate some beautiful hiking trails and can even go scuba diving between the tectonic plates in Thingvellir National Park!

💡 TIP – Begin your trip early in the morning to maximize daylight hours, especially in winter.

Best attractions along the Golden Circle

1. thingvellir nationaal park.

Þingvellir is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the location of Iceland’s first parliament, Alþingi, established in 930 AD. This historical site holds immense cultural importance as the birthplace of Icelandic democracy.

The park is situated in a rift valley caused by the separation of the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates . You can actually walk between the plates at the Almannagjá gorge , witnessing the impressive geological formations and understanding the dynamic processes shaping the Earth.

Þingvellir is home to Silfra , a crystal-clear fissure filled with glacial meltwater, making it a world-famous spot for snorkeling and diving. The visibility in Silfra can exceed 100 meters, offering an unparalleled underwater experience. One of the most popular activities in Thingvellir National Park is to go snorkeling or scuba diving in the Silfra fissure.

And then there is Öxarárfoss , a beautiful and historically significant waterfall located within Þingvellir National Park. The waterfall is fed by the Öxará river, which flows through the park and cascades over the Almannagjá fault.

2. Bruarfoss Waterfall

Brúarfoss Waterfall is a true hidden gem on the Golden Circle and one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland. The waterfall is renowned for its vibrant blue color , which is especially vivid in sunny conditions. The hue comes from the glacial water flowing through the river Brúará, creating a mesmerizing sight as it cascades over the falls.

The hike to Brúarfoss starts from a parking area near the Brekkuskógur summerhouses. The trail is about 7-kilometer (4.4 miles) in total and a stunning hike in Iceland .

The hike is relatively easy and follows a path along the river, offering beautiful views of the Icelandic countryside.

Geysir, located in the Haukadalur Valley of southwestern Iceland, is one of the country’s most famous geothermal areas and the namesake of all geysers worldwide.

The Great Geysir, the original geyser, has been active for over 10,000 years and can occasionally spout boiling water up to 70 meters (230 feet) into the air , though its eruptions have become infrequent.

Nearby, the more active Strokkur geyser erupts every 5-10 minutes , shooting water up to 20 meters (65 feet), providing a reliable and spectacular display for visitors. The geothermal area is also home to numerous hot springs, mud pots, and fumaroles, showcasing the intense geothermal activity of the region.

golden circle cruises

Gullfoss, known as the “Golden Falls,” is one of Iceland’s most iconic and breathtaking waterfalls , located on the Hvítá River in the southwestern part of the country. The waterfall features a dramatic two-stage drop, first plunging 11 meters (36 feet) and then another 21 meters (69 feet) into a rugged canyon.

The powerful cascade creates a stunning display of mist and rainbows on sunny days, making it a favorite spot for photographers and nature lovers.

Today, Gullfoss is protected and celebrated as a symbol of Icelandic natural heritage . The site is well-equipped with viewing platforms and walking paths, allowing visitors to experience the waterfall from various angles. The nearby visitor center offers information about the falls, as well as dining and shopping facilities.

5. Faxafoss

Faxafoss, also known as Faxi or Vatnsleysufoss, is a charming waterfall located on the Tungufljót River in southwestern Iceland. It is situated a short drive from the main Golden Circle route , making it an excellent addition to your itinerary when exploring the area. Unlike some of Iceland’s more dramatic waterfalls, Faxafoss is known for its broad, gentle cascade and tranquil surroundings.

There are well-maintained paths and viewing platforms that allow visitors to get close to the waterfall and enjoy different perspectives. The area is relatively flat and easy to navigate, suitable for visitors of all ages.

6. Hrunalaug Hot Spring

Hrunalaug Hot Spring is a charming and secluded geothermal pool located near the village of Flúðir in southern Iceland. Known for its serene atmosphere and picturesque surroundings, Hrunalaug offers visitors a unique and intimate hot spring experience, away from the more crowded tourist spots.

This hidden gem provides a perfect opportunity to relax and soak in the warm, mineral-rich waters while enjoying the tranquility of the Icelandic countryside.

The main pool at Hrunalaug is a small, stone-lined basin fed by a natural hot spring. The water temperature is typically around 38-40°C (100-104°F), making it perfect for a relaxing soak.

7. Kerid Crater

Kerið Crater is a stunning volcanic crater lake renowned for its vivid blue-green water and striking red volcanic rock walls. This approximately 3,000-year-old crater is a caldera formed by the collapse of a magma chamber after a volcanic eruption , making it geologically unique. The vibrant colors of the lake and surrounding moss-covered rocks create a picturesque scene, especially during summer, offering excellent opportunities for photography and exploration.

Visitors to Kerið can enjoy a variety of activities, including walking along the crater rim for panoramic views and descending to the lake for a closer look. The crater is easily accessible, situated about 15 kilometers north of Selfoss and a 45-minute drive from Reykjavik, with facilities including a parking area and well-maintained paths. A small entrance fee helps maintain the site .

Places to visit that are close to the Golden Circle

If you have two days to explore the Golden Circle you might have some extra time on your hands to also include one of these beautiful places close by. My guess is that if you calculate in 3 days you’ll have plenty of time to explore all of the places listed below as well .

Haifoss, located in southern Iceland near the Þjórsárdalur Valley, is one of the country’s tallest and most spectacular waterfalls . Plunging approximately 122 meters (400 feet) into a dramatic canyon, Haifoss, which means “High Falls,” offers a breathtaking view of cascading water surrounded by rugged cliffs and verdant landscapes. The waterfall is fed by the Fossá River, and nearby, you can also find the smaller yet equally stunning Granni waterfall, which translates to “Neighbor,” creating a captivating twin waterfall scene.

Accessible via a gravel road that requires a 4×4 vehicle , Haifoss remains relatively less crowded compared to other Icelandic tourist spots. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views from the top of the canyon or embark on a hike to the base for a closer look at the waterfall’s immense power.

2. Þjóðveldisbærinn

Þjóðveldisbærinn, also known as the Commonwealth Farm, is a fascinating open-air museum in Iceland that offers visitors a glimpse into the country’s Viking Age past. Located in the Þjórsárdalur valley near the Hekla volcano, this museum features a meticulously reconstructed turf house, replicating the traditional building style of Icelandic settlers from the 9th to 11th centuries.

The turf house, built using materials and techniques authentic to the era, provides insight into the daily lives, architecture, and agricultural practices of early Icelandic communities.

Visitors can explore the interior of the turf house, which includes a living area, kitchen, and sleeping quarters, all furnished with period-appropriate artifacts and tools. Guides often provide informative tours, sharing stories and details about the Viking Age lifestyle, social structures, and the challenges faced by early settlers.

3. Hjálparfoss

Hjálparfoss is a captivating twin waterfall located in the Þjórsárdalur valley in southern Iceland. The waterfall is where two streams from the river Fossá converge and cascade over a lava rock formation into a serene, wide pool below. Surrounded by basalt formations and lush greenery, its unique formation and the serene pool at the base provide an ideal location for relaxing and photography.

Accessible via a short drive from the main routes, Hjálparfoss is relatively easy to reach and is often less crowded than other more famous waterfalls in Iceland. The area around Hjálparfoss offers picnic spots and opportunities for exploration, making it a great stop for a leisurely visit.
