Melbourne Cup Champion Gold Trip to stand at Lovatsville

16 May 2024

Ciaron Maher Racing, Australian Bloodstock and new Victorian Stallion Station, Lovatsville, are pleased to announce that Gold Trip will stand this coming season at the Central Victoria-based stud, Lovatsville for a fee of $8,800 (incl. GST).

As a Melbourne Cup winner and weight-for-age Turnbull Stakes victor, Gold Trip retires having demonstrated immense talent and resilience to compete and perform in the Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup in back-to-back years. Racing as a 2 year-old in France, onto multiple Group 1 performances as a Classic European 3 year-old where he ran a gallant 4th to Sottass in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, followed by a glittering Australian racing career.

Providing Champion trainer Maher with the crowning achievement of his training career in winning the Melbourne Cup, Gold Trip retires as one of Maher’s best ever gallopers “He won a Melbourne Cup, was beaten a lip in the Caulfield Cup, was a weight-for-age Turnbull Stakes winner, could have won a Cox Plate and was elite in an Arc. He is a legitimate freak.”

Co-purchaser and owner of Gold Trip, Australian Bloodstock’s Jamie Lovett spoke of the attraction of Gold Trip when sourcing him from Europe “What appealed to us in Gold Trip was his dynamic turn of foot, as we saw in that explosive performance in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes. There is no doubt in my mind that he was beating the best 2000m field assembled in this country in the last 20 years and he beat them with his head on his chest.”

Lovett further added, in qualifying Gold Trip’s stud credentials “Weight-for-age is our measure for the elite, however when he was asked to carry weight in the big handicaps he had the class to do that too and I believe that is a quality that will resonate with breeder’s looking to breed a genuine racehorse.”

Lovatsville’s Sam White is delighted to add Gold Trip to the Lovatsville roster “It is quite rare that the Australasian breeding community get a chance to access horses who have performed so well in an Arc, arguably Europe’s premier race. Gold Trip had the versatility to race at the highest level here for multiple seasons demonstrating his class and toughness, while also displaying obvious speed where he flew past subsequent Cox Plate winner Romantic Warrior in the Turnbull.”

White feels that Gold Trips performance, physique and price point will pique the interest of many breeders “At $8,800 he is priced extremely well considering his ability. We want to inject further value into the opportunity by providing very attractive breeding right packages so that Gold Trip’s supporters can access him for the duration of his career for a modest outlay.”

Alongside the breeding right packages in Gold Trip, Ciaron Maher Racing, Australian Bloodstock and Gold Trip’s ownership group have committed to supporting the horse at stud, ensuring that he starts his career at stud positively.

Mark Zahra earns redemption as Gold Trip wins $8m Melbourne Cup with barnstorming run to the finish

Gold Trip wins Melbourne Cup 2022

Mark Zahra has earned redemption after riding the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained Gold Trip to victory in the $8m Melbourne Cup with a barnstorming run down the home straight.

Emissary claimed second while High Emocean, a Gold Trip stablemate, fought back from last to finish third and raging favourite Deauville Legend took out fourth.

WATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE: Gold Trip wins Melbourne Cup with stunning fightback.

Gold Trip’s victory comes after the six-year-old finished second in the Caulfield Cup two weeks ago with Zahra and, ridden by Jamie Spencer, ninth in the Cox Plate a week later.

But the French horse - who entered the race as a $19 chance with just one win in his career - is now a Melbourne Cup champion, taking home $4.4 million for his connections.

Gold Trip jockey Mark Zahra celebrates with the 2022 Melbourne Cup and trainers David Eustace and Ciaron Maher.

Asked what he was thinking in the epic finish, Zahra said: “Just piss off, no one come near me.”

“I feel like crying. It’s unbelievable. What a day. He’s a horse that when you go, you don’t give him a chance to think about it,” he told Ten.

“It’s just elation when I crossed the line. What an amazing feeling.”

The jockey completed his own personal 12-month turnaround after becoming embroiled in a COVID rule-breaking controversy last year, losing out on a ride on eventual Melbourne Cup winner Verry Elleegant.

“This time last year I was watching Verry Elleegant win and getting told off for drinking too much,” Zahra said.

“To come a full year and have redemption, with good mates of mine who train the horse and own the horse, my wife’s here, it’s an unbelievable feeling.”

Maher has now completed a career sweep of the Melbourne spring carnival’s most important races.

Mark Zahra celebrates victory aboard Gold Trip in the Melbourne Cup.

He trained Jameka to win the 2016 Caulfield Cup and teamed up with Eustace for Cox Plate glory in 2020.

“I don’t think it’s really sunk in yet. Phenomenal,” Maher told Racing.com.

“It’s just huge. Dave and I are lucky enough to stand up here but god, most of our staff are here today, friends and family, it’s just fantastic.”

Trainer Ciaron Maher celebrates Gold Trip’s Melbourne Cup victory with jockey Mark Zahra.

Maher’s mother Eileen gatecrashed the interview and said she knew her sons - Declan works for his brother Ciaron - would win the Melbourne Cup two months ago.

“Ciaron said to me ‘I didn’t get into the business to come second. I only got in this business to come first’,” she said.

“From then on I knew that it would happen.”

Mark Zahra rides Gold Trip to victory.

Camorra traded the lead with Smokin’ Romans as the field passed the post for the first time.

Serpentine surged to the front around the bend and held position at the halfway mark, with Tralee Rose for company.

Knights Order pushed to the front with 900m to go and put lengths between itself and Smokin’ Romans.

Deauville Legend had closed as a $4.60 favourite, ahead of Realm Of Flowers ($9) and Montefilia ($10), but was only briefly in contention for the win.

Interpretation, another horse trained by winners Maher and Eustace, failed to finish the race - a worrying outcome after only confirming its place on Tuesday morning following a last-minute vet check .

But the five-year-old was safely walked back to the stables at the end of the race.

The Melbourne Cup was run on a Soft 7 track after passing showers soaked Flemington earlier on Tuesday, but rain managed to stay away for the race itself.

It is the coldest Cup Day since 1995 when Doriemus took the honours in miserly 13.6C temperatures.

International Horse Profile: Gold Trip

  • by Drew Patchell
  • in Articles
  • on September 24, 2021

gold trip horse number

Gold Trip is Cox Plate bound! The top international chance for the 2021 Cox Plate arrives next week in Melbourne and is now a $10 shot or less with most bookies.

Gold Trip ran a very strong 4th in the Arc last year and this year has run 2nd and 3rd in Group 1s over similar distances. The last start 3rd in the Grand Prix De Saint-Cloud was a very valid run from the back.

Best suited to wetter surfaces, this is the horse you want to eye in on if the heavens open on the days leading up to the race. Even on a Good to soft surface, he is respectable as shown by the 2nd behind Mare Australis in the Prix Ganay.

Gold Trip’s racing style is potentially the biggest query for the Moonee Valley track. Ridden mid to back in the field, Gold Trip has little to no tactical speed early so a good barrier draw 3 out to 7 will be vital to the horses chances on the day.

Why exactly does Gold Trip measure up?

On Timeform ratings in the past 4 Group 1 events Gold Trip has competed in, ratings of 122, 120, 122 and 118+ were the results with 3rd/2nd/4th and 3rd the finishing positions for the horse. With less international competition this year and no Winx, Gold Trip becomes a factor at the ratings.

What it takes to win or place in the Cox Plate the past three years?

2020 Cox Plate – (123 Timeform Rating won the race – 122 prior to race for the horse) 1st – Sir Dragonet – Got a genuine tempo and soft track – previous best 122+ timeform on soft. All perfect conditions on day. Ran 123 to win. 2nd – Armory – Ran 122+ Timeform rating in previous G1 run and repeated that figure with 122 for second. 3rd – Russian Camelot – Best in past seen over slightly shorter distances. Ran to 121 Timeform Rating on the day. Had previously ran 124 in the Underwood on a soft track.

2019 Cox Plate – (124 Timeform Rating won the race – 125+ prior to race for the horse) 1st – Lys Gracieux – Won like a good thing going away from them. Tempo was solid. Run prior was 124 Timeform Rating. Ran 125+ on the day. Next start in Japan ran 128! Class horse. 2nd – Castelvecchio – Ran a clear career peak here of 124 Timeform rating. Won a G1 since running 120. 3rd – Te Akau Shark – Disappointed on the day – 2000m too far for horses best. Ran 119 on the day coming off a 126 Timeform rating prior and 126+ next start after that both those over 1600m.

2018 Cox Plate – (129+ Timeform Rating won the race – 134 prior to race for the horse) 1st – Winx – Didn’t need to run up to her best to win but had to improve on last start win. Did so impressively going up to 129+ Timeform Rating on the day from 123+ run prior. Just had to run to best to win. 2nd – Benbatl – Would have won any other year without Winx in the race. Came in with 129 Timeform rating and ran to 129! Ran 124 since. Was a career peak along with Dubai Turf win over 3l+ back in March of 2018. 3rd – Humidor – Beaten 4.75L into 3rd – you take that as an owner. Ran 122 Timeform on the day. Previous best 129 previous year behind Winx. Best since that 129 was this 123 and never improved. Previous best behind that was 125+. Peaked in 2017.

Maher declares Turnbull thrashing Gold Trip's ‘best win'

Melbourne Cup champion Gold Trip has stamped his authority on upcoming spring majors with an unbelievable performance in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m).

In his first trip back to Headquarters since the first Tuesday in November last year, the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace -trained Gold Trip swamped rivals to win by 1¾ lengths from international raider West Wind Blows .

An emotional Maher lauded Gold Trip's breathtaking performance.

"That really gets you going, doesn't it?" Maher said.

"He put the writing on the wall with his run at The Valley and you just look at him in the yard, he looks amazing. The team have done an unbelievable job. The horse is pristine.

"It's probably his best win, if you can say that from a Melbourne Cup winner, but he was dynamic today and very impressive. I can't wait to see what Mark (Zahra) thinks."

Soulcombe put in a strong Cups trial also, ridden for luck on the rail to run third ahead of Hong Kong superstar Romantic Warrior , the $2.40 fixed price favourite.

Nothing rivalled Gold Trip, who idled last in the run, hooked widest and walloped a hot field.

With the Caulfield Cup in a fortnight and Cox Plate seven days later, Maher has decisions to make.

Zahra too, with the big race jockey committed to Caulfield Cup equal favourite Without A Fight.

Weight would be a major consideration also, with 58.5kg Cups topweight Gold Trip exposed to a penalty with victory in the Caulfield Cup.

He placed second in the race last year.

The Cox Plate would be a free hit, handicapping wise, for the dual Group 1 winner, who was unlucky in weight-for-age championship last year.

"We'll see. I think Mark will be trying to push us towards the Cox Plate now because I think he might have one in the Caulfield Cup," Maher said.

"But anyway he might have a bit of thinking to do now.

"He's (Gold Trip) good at a mile-and-a-half (2400m), the weather plays into it, you see how dynamic he was with a bit of cut in the track today. I couldn't be happier."

Zahra, who won the Turnbull in 2020 aboard Verry Elleegant before the champion mare trained on to win the Caulfield Cup, made his thoughts on Gold Trip's next start known.

"He's got to go to the Cox Plate, surely," Zahra said.

"They were a few of his major rivals there and the way he won why wouldn't you go there?

"I just love being on his back. If they've got any brains then they'll go to the Cox Plate (instead of the Caulfield Cup) … It'll all work out perfectly for everyone."

Gold Trip firmed $17 into $11 with TAB for the Caulfield Cup after the Turnbull triumph and $11 into $9 for the Cox Plate. His Melbourne Cup quote was slashed $15 into $8.

Emotional jockey Mark Zahra reacts after Gold Trip wins the 2022 Melbourne Cup

Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Mark Zahra says it is "unbelievable" that he guided Gold Trip to victory.

Zahra rode brilliantly to guide the French stayer to victory, less than three weeks after it finished second in the Caulfield Cup.

"I can't [put this into words]. I feel like crying. It's unbelievable. What a day," he said.

"He's a horse that when you go, you don't give him a chance to think about it. I was hoping no-one would come near me."

Emissary finished second and High Emocean came third.

Favourite Deauville Legend finished strongly, but could only manage fourth.

An emotional Zahra spoke of the difference between 2022 and last year, when he was suspended and lost the ride on eventual winner Verry Elleegant.

"This time last year [I was] in Byron Bay and I was getting told off [by my wife] for drinking too much and it could have been my ride," he told Channel 10.

"I said, 'What do you want me to do? My horse [Verry Elleegant] just won the Melbourne Cup?'

"For today, to come today and I've got good mates in the horse and it's unbelievable.

"Redemption day today. Just a miracle."

Gold Trip runs them down

The race was held on a soft 7 surface after the track was downgraded following some showers late-morning.

There was a scramble for the lead at the start, with horses racing up to seven wide as Zahra kept Gold Trip midfield, drifting back to the second half of the field.

Frontrunner Serpentine took control at halfway, with Tralee Rose and Smokin' Romans second and third.

Internationals Deauville Legend and Without A Fight found the fence, with Knights Order out wide.

Locals Duais and 2019 winner Vow and Declare were up with the field.

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Knights Order hit the front after the 1,000m with Smokin' Romans, then began to go clear on his own.

Knights Order pinched a break on the turn, with Without A Fight and Deauville Legend moving into position.

In the straight, Smokin' Romans hit the front at the 450m, but Deauville Legend and Gold Trip came down the outside.

Zahra and Gold Trip grabbed the lead before the 250m, and the pair went clear, as Emissary finished strongly to take second and Bendigo Cup-winner High Emocean finished third ahead of the favourite.

"I've got the Cup with me and I can't stop looking at it knowing it's something that can never be taken away," Zahra told ABC Radio Melbourne.

After making a late surge in the final moments of the race, Zahra said the final stretch after taking the lead was agonising.

"I looked up and thought 'oh jeez, there's still a fair way to go here', the last 100 [metres] felt like it went forever, I couldn't wait for that post," he said.

Gold Trip, a French-bred horse, came fourth in French classic Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe in 2020, before coming to Australia last year to join trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace.

Zahra said he hadn't been confident that Gold Trip would last the 3,200m cup distance.

Gold Trip had run second in the Caulfield Cup, then backed up for an eighth-place finish in the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley 10 days ago.

The six-year-old went on to make history, becoming only the third topweight in nearly seven decades to win the Cup, joining three-time winner Makybe Diva (2005) and Rising Fast (1954).
