Arizona's best free attractions: 21 things to see and do that don't cost a cent

Hike Lava River Cave in Flagstaff

Come prepared with flashlights and ghost stories. This mile-long lava tube north of Flagstaff can be one of the chilliest summer hikes in Arizona, hovering around 42 degrees.

Formed 700,000 years ago by a river of molten rock blasted from a volcanic vent in nearby Hart Prairie, the cave is an ice cellar beneath the forest floor.

Carry at least two sources of light and watch your footing. After squeezing through a narrow opening, you’re able to walk upright the rest of the way, so you’ll have time spin tales of ghosts and giant spiders lurking in the darkness.

Details: Drive 9 miles north of Flagstaff on U.S. 180 and turn left on Forest Road 245 (at mile marker 230). Continue 3 miles and turn left on FR 171. Drive 1 mile and turn left on FR 171B to the parking lot. 928-527-3600, www.fs.usda.gov/coconino.

Stop and smell the flowers at the Arboretum at Flagstaff

If hiking a dark, chilly lava tube seems intimidating, try the soft shagginess of the Arboretum at Flagstaff. Tucked away down a dirt road on Flag’s west side, the arboretum is a botanical garden, nature center and environmental education station sheltered in a ponderosa pine forest.

Spread across 200 acres, the arboretum offers sun-kissed meadows and butterflies dancing among bright blooms. Plants spill from beds and crowd the pathways. The dozen themed gardens include forest meadow, pollinator garden, riparian habitat and shade garden. Peak blooms are June-September.

Camp at the Grand Canyon's North Rim

You can reserve sites at the North Rim Campground within Grand Canyon National Park but it’s quite often full. If so, try DeMotte, a small campground in Kaibab National Forest, 7 miles from the park boundary.

Sitting at the edge of vast meadows at 8,700 feet and fringed by mixed conifer forest, DeMotte Campground offers 38 single-family sites for tents and RVs (no hookups). It’s a great place for wildlife sightings. Half the sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and the other half can be reserved.

Splash in a cool mountain stream near Payson

Tonto Natural Bridge State Park, northwest of Payson, shelters the largest natural travertine bridge in the world. The Pine Creek Trail slips down through the woods to join the slender waterway that carved the mighty bridge. From there just work your way downstream, around boulders and past a series of pools.

The splashy music of cascades and mini-falls echoes through the trees. Look for small caves and alcoves along the bank. Arrows painted on rocks lead the way. The trail ends at the cavernous 400-foot-long tunnel beneath the bridge. Return the way you came or climb out via the short but steep Anna Mae Trail. Swimming is permitted downstream from the bridge.

Cozy up in a waterfront cabin in Greer

Greer Lodge Resort & Cabins offers a sweet getaway for anglers, with all cabins on or near the water. Guests just have to choose whether they want a cabin on the small trout ponds or on the Little Colorado River.

But you don't have to fish to enjoy the property. Built in 1948, Greer Lodge borders national forest and includes a play area, basketball and volleyball courts and horseshoe pits. Watch for deer and elk grazing the meadows. They offer 20 well-appointed log cabins. The largest can sleep 12. Several are dog friendly.

Ride a gondola to the top of the San Francisco Peaks

What a ski season it’s been at Arizona Snowbowl north of Flagstaff, going until May 29. Just a few weeks later, the scenic Arizona Gondola skyride began making its daily journeys up to the mountaintop.

Marvel at the vistas spilling away in all directions as you glide up the slopes before being deposited at 11,500 feet. Pause to enjoy incredible panoramas, the sweet chilled mountain air, and some memorable photo opportunities before returning. You may not be on the roof of Arizona but you’re pretty darned close.

Drive up the highest mountain in southern Arizona

Travel through five life zones on this twisting climb up the slopes of Mount Graham, southern Arizona’s highest peak. For 35 miles State Route 366 makes a switchbacking ascent from desert scrubland to high forests. The last 12 miles are a narrow winding gravel road. (You may be more comfortable in a high-clearance vehicle.)

You’ll climb past creeks, picnic areas and campgrounds. Ladybug Saddle is named for the large number of the colorful beetles that gather during summer. A wildflower-carpeted alpine meadow known as Hospital Flat (once used by recuperating soldiers from Camp Grant) makes a peaceful rest break.

The road ends near one of the prettiest high-country lakes you’ll find. Shimmering Riggs Flat Lake is ringed by pine and fir trees at 9,000 feet.

A summer's worth of adventure awaits at Lyman Lake State Park

At 1,500 acres, Lyman Lake dwarfs all bodies of water in the White Mountains. With such an expanse, there are activities for everybody, including a sheltered swimming beach, a no-wake zone for anglers, twisting canyons kayakers will love and plenty of wide-open water for speed-boaters and skiers.

A small store sells food, bait and supplies. Anglers can catch largemouth bass, catfish, carp and walleye. The campground overlooks the lake, featuring 56 sites, 38 with electric and water hookups. The park also eight eight air-conditioned cabins with full-sized beds, bunk beds, table, chairs and covered porch.

Visit Hawley Lake, the coldest place in Arizona

Surrounded by mountain peaks, Hawley Lake is tucked away on White Mountain Apache tribal Land. Hawley gained notoriety for having the coldest temperature ever recorded in Arizona, 40 degrees below 0 in January 1971.

The 300-acre lake is an angler's playground filled with rainbow, brook, brown and cutthroat trout. You need a permit to fish on tribal land. Go to https://wmatoutdoor.org for info. The lake offers camping, a lodge, cabins and boat rentals.

Drive south for high-elevation hiking at Chiricahua National Monument

Instead of going north, dodge some traffic by driving south to Chiricahua National Monument. Forming an island of sculpted stone and forest in a sea of arid grasslands, the 12,000-acre park southeast of Willcox shelters an exotic array of massive columns, slender spires and impossibly balanced boulders.

The craggy skyline seems to be built from the splintered remains of ancient castles. Elevation at Chiricahua National Monument ranges from 5,124 feet at the entrance station to 7,310 feet at the top of Sugarloaf Mountain.

A shady campground is tucked amid the oaks and pines of Bonita Canyon. Miles of hiking trails weave their way through the otherworldly rock formations. And tours of Faraway Ranch, a homestead from the 1880s, are conducted when staffing permits.

Carole (owner) and her staff are WONDERFUL!! My family and friends have done all our travels through Global Travel Adventures for years and have never been disappointed. Carole ALWAYS finds us great deals through out the year. Everyone goes out of the way and are very professional. They DO NOT charge fees for their services like others do. Don't waste your time with this agency. Laura Pulido is one of the most UNPROFESSIONAL and laziest agents I have EVER dealt with. 1st day contacting her with my travel plans amd she is more worried about wasting her time and energy if you dont commit to her in one call or email. She sent me a text basically stating that she is working for free and won't "continue " to help unless I commit to this agency right now. Then Carol wants to sit there and make excuses for her agents horrible behavior and is just s ignorant at LP. GO ELSEWHERE AND GET MULTIPLE QUOTES BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT ALL THE SAME. They tell you they are the only ones who blah blah blah work with Disney which is a huge lie! Not even a 20 minute quote was worth her continuing to help us with iur travel plans. WOW. WAY OFF FROM A 5 STAR FOR ME NO MATTER HOW MANY EXCUSES Carol gives. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. NONE OF THE OTHER COMPANIES HAVE GIVEN ME A HARD TIME AND ARE WILLING TO ACTUALLY HELP. Global Entry is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) program that allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers upon arrival in the United States. Members enter the United States by accessing the Global Entry processing technology at selected airports .

At airports, program members proceed to the Global Entry lanes where processing technology will be used to expedite the members by capturing a photo to verify their membership. Once the photo has been captured, the member will receive on-screen instructions and proceed to a CBP officer who will confirm that you have successfully completed the process.

Travelers must be pre-approved for the Global Entry program. All applicants undergo a rigorous background check and in-person interview before enrollment. If a traveler was unable to schedule an interview at an Enrollment Center prior to their international travel, they have an option to complete their interview via Enrollment on Arrival upon their arrival to the United States.

Another upcoming processing technology option for travelers will be the Global Entry Mobile App. This app will enable members to validate their arrival to the U.S. on their iOS or Android device prior to entering the Federal Inspection Services area.

While Global Entry’s goal is to speed travelers through the process, members may still be selected for further examination when entering the United States. Any violation of the program’s terms and conditions will result in the appropriate enforcement action and termination of the traveler’s membership privileges.

Cities known for their extraterrestrial activity often capitalize on their reputation, offering curious visitors UFO tours. Here are 17 cities where people have claimed to have spotted UFOs. 

Sedona, Arizona

Sedona, an Arizona desert town within Coconino National Forest, has long been associated with alien activity. Locals believe its spiritual energy fields are tied to increased UFO activity, and some claim aliens have abducted them. Visitors can go on UFO tours and learn about the vortex energy of this interesting town. 

Roswell, New Mexico

The 1947 Roswell incident captured America’s attention and led to speculation over the decades that the government had covered up evidence of extraterrestrial beings. Britannica explains that in 1994, it was “revealed that the balloon was part of the top-secret Project Mogul, which sought to detect Soviet nuclear bomb tests.” However, the revelation “did little to end the conspiracy theories.”

Stephenville, Texas

In January 2008, Stephenville, Texas, saw dozens of locals report patterns of lights in the night sky, with some arguing it was a single large UFO. The Air Force Reserve later issued a statement explaining that jets from the 457th Fighter Squadron had been training in military airspace at the time, but the town had become gripped by a UFO frenzy. 

Chicago, Illinois

Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport was the site of a UFO sighting on November 7, 2006. At 4:15 p.m., United Airlines employees and a few other witnesses reported seeing a UFO. However, the FAA refused to investigate because it had not been seen on radar and called it a “weather phenomenon.”

Denver, Colorado

Denver is a known hotspot for UFO sightings, with mysterious flying objects regularly capturing national attention. Axios Denver recently reported that “the Denver metro area had 43.2 sightings per 100,000 residents between 2000 and 2023,” well above the national average of 34.3. However, this pales compared to the state’s sparsely populated southern counties, including Huerfano and Mineral. 

Los Angeles, California

The City of Angels has been the site of several historic UFO sightings, notably the Battle of Los Angeles in 1942. The incident was reportedly an attack by Imperial Japan and the responding anti-aircraft artillery barrage that took place less than three months after the attack on Pearl Harbor, but it has long been associated with UFOs. 

Montreal, Canada

Montreal was the site of a famous UFO sighting on November 7, 1990. Witnesses reported seeing a huge, round, metallic object with eight to ten lights over the rooftop pool of the Bonaventure Hotel. The object stayed at the site for three hours before slowly moving northward. The incident was later commemorated in 2021 in the Royal Canadian Mint’s fourth installment of their Unexplained Phenomena series. 

Mexico City, Mexico

Mexico City has long been associated with sightings of UFOs, but recently, three alleged alien bodies caught the world’s attention. Mexican journalist José Jaime Maussan presented mummified figures that are likely a hoax, given his similar findings in Peru in 2017 that were actually dolls. 

Bonnybridge, Scotland

Bonnybridge, a small village, has been dubbed the UFO capital, with over 300 sightings annually. In 1992, it was the site of two sightings by James Walker and later Isabella and Carol Sloggett, who claimed a UFO had landed before them. 

Phoenix, Arizona

Residents of the Phoenix area reported witnessing a “V” shaped group of lights hovering over the valley on the night of March 13, 1997. A second sighting by a police officer heightened interest in the incident, and then-Gov. Fife Symington later made light of it during a famous press conference featuring an alien aide. Axios Phoenix notes that the 1997 “incident propelled Arizona into the annals of UFO lore.”

Wycliffe Well, Australia

This tiny settlement, locally known as a roadhouse, is the self-proclaimed UFO capital of Australia. Wycliffe Well is mostly visited as a service stop for long Outback drives between Alice Springs and Tennant Creek but has been home to multiple UFO sightings. 

Warminster, England

The phenomenon known as “The Warminster Thing” began in the 1960s with strange noises and sightings in this historic market town in Wiltshire, England. Locals reported seeing strange objects and hearing mysterious sounds over the night sky, which attracted thousands of curious visitors keen to see the phenomenon for themselves. 

Capilla del Monte, Argentina

Capilla del Monte, a small city in Argentina’s northwest, lies next to Cerro Uritorco, a small mountain about 1.8 miles away. Cerro Uritorco is famous for being a center of alleged paranormal phenomena and UFO sightings and attracts tourists from all over Argentina and across the world. 

Area 51, Nevada

Space.com argues, “Area 51 is synonymous with tales of UFOs, government cover-ups, and potentially testing alien technology.” The U.S. Air Force installation has attracted the attention of UFO enthusiasts for decades and led to the nearby town of Rachel becoming a tourism hotspot. 

Gulf Breeze, Florida

Gulf Breeze, a suburb of Pensacola, was the site of a series of UFO sightings between late 1987 and early 1988. The Gulf Breeze Sentinel published several photos of what a local contractor claimed to be a UFO, but the Pensacola News Journal later criticized the claims as “sensationalist.”

Kolkata, India

Kolkata, a megacity of 15 million in the east of India, has been the site of several reported UFO sightings over the past few decades. In October 2007, an unusual, allegedly shape-shifting “fireball” was photographed over the city’s skies. 

Moscow, Russia

Russia’s capital city was home to several historical UFO encounters during the Soviet era. In 1989, several leading newspapers published articles on the phenomenon and reported that a “permanent center” to study UFOs had been established.
