A luxury vacation can mean many things. For us, it’s over-the-top accommodations, personalized service that anticipates every need and bucket-list experiences in a jaw-dropping setting. Echelons above and beyond a typical five-star hotel, which in and of itself is already pretty phenomenal, the spots on our list take luxury to the next level. We’re talking about the creme de la creme around the world. These are places where A-listers and royals go on holiday . These are places with suites that cost more than a car and seasons-long waitlists. These are places to see and be seen or to literally see no one at all (i.e., a private island). Our best advice to afford any one of these once-in-a-lifetime luxury trips? Start a swear jar/vacation fund now because while scrolling, you’re going to be saying “holy sh*t” a heck of a lot.

10 TRENDS THAT WILL BE HUGE THE SUMMER OF ‘IMPACT TRAVEL’

best luxury vacations amangiri

1. Amangiri (canyon Point, Utah)

Desert dreams are made of the Amangiri, which means "peaceful mountain" in Sanskrit. And boy does this celeb hotspot that’s provided R&R to everyone from Emily Ratajkowski to Justin and Hailey Bieber live up to its name. Surrounded by 900 acres of dunes, plateaus and gorges, this aesthetically striking hotel is designed to disappear into dramatic red-rock scenery. Minimalist suites flow into the landscape and the eye-popping main swimming pool curves around a giant rock escarpment. Sure, it’s a schlep from the nearest major airport. Luckily for the privileged patrons who vacation at Amangiri, the property has a private helipad.

best luxury vacations miavana

2. Miavana By Time + Tide (nosy Anko, Madagascar)

Proof that some places are well worth the trek, Miavana by Time + Tide is a remote slice of palm-fringed paradise off the coast of Madagascar that gives guests the chance to live their best private island life. It’s an incredibly unique place where luxury and life-changing adventures coexist the way this five-star resort breathes in harmony with the fantasy destination it calls home. On the topic of incomprehensibly cool activities, ever dreamt of heli-surfing turquoise waves, diving with humpback whales or seeing lemurs in the wild? There are boats and helicopters for off-the-wall amazing private excursions. Hungry? Sample Africa’s first sustainably produced caviar.

best luxury vacations conrad maldives

3. Conrad Maldives Rangali Island (rangali Island, Maldives)

Part of the award-winning Conrad Maldives Rangali Island , The Muraka, which made a splash in 2018, has the distinction of being the first underwater hotel suite in the world! That’s hardly where the bragging rights end. This floating two-floor residence integrates living spaces above and below the Indian Ocean. The standout is the submerged king-size bedroom that’s encircled by infinite shades of blue. If you don’t have $9,999 to shell out for a floating fantasy (or it’s already booked), the overwater bungalows and beach villas are beyond fabulous. There’s also an overwater spa and an undersea restaurant 16 feet below the surface.

best luxury vacations bora bora

4. The St. Regis Bora Bora Resort

One of the best places to splash out in the world, The St. Regis Bora Bora Resort boasts the largest overwater villas in the South Pacific, starting at a palatial 1,550 square feet. If you’re realllllllly looking to splurge, there’s an even grander option. Some—including the VIPs and A-listers who rent it out by the week—have called the $17,000-per-night Royal Estate Villa the ultimate French Polynesian bucket-list stay. Given the fact that this three-bedroom compound comes with its own private beach with umbrellas and loungers, a mosaic-tiled pool, a large lagoon front terrace and dedicated butler service, we couldn't possibly disagree.

best luxury vacations mandarin canouan

5. Mandarin Oriental, Canouan (canouan, St. Vincent And The Grenadines)

Far away from cruise ports and boisterous spring breakers, the Mandarin Oriental, Canouan is a remote island paradise where billionaires go to splash out in secluded, next-level lavish style. It’s the pinnacle of luxury and you probably haven’t even heard of it. That’s by design. A hideaway this posh doesn’t need to advertise to the masses. Instead, it lets its 26 sophisticated ocean-view suites and 13 villas do the talking. Besides shacking up in the finest accommodations in the Caribbean, guests get to frolic on Godahl Beach, dine on international culinary delights and relish spa sessions inside swish overwater treatment bungalows.

best luxury vacations patina maldives

6. Patina Maldives, Fari Islands

The Maldives certainly isn’t lacking in swish hotels and resorts. While it's not hard to find a five-star stay, Patina Maldives, Fari Islands takes luxury to the highest level imaginable…and then goes beyond that. The flagship property from Patina Hotels & Resorts, the latest hospitality concept by Capella Hotel Group, puts an upscale sustainable spin on everything. The villas are built in harmony with nature, the palette-pleasing gastronomy highlights local ingredients and the soul of the island inspires the wellness rituals. Perhaps that’s why Shaun White, Nina Dobrev and Zoey Deutch have all checked in (and presumably never wanted to check out).

best luxury vacations royal mansour

7. Royal Mansour Marrakech (marrakech, Morocco)

Everything about Royal Mansour Marrakech feels like a regal showpiece. This breathtaking palace hotel was actually built under the direction of King Mohammed VI of Morocco—so you know it’s legit fit for a king. Budget certainly wasn’t a factor in the construction process. That shows in the 53 multi-story riads with private courtyards, fountains and plunge pools as well as the lush gardens, 27,000-square-foot spa, Instagrammable white birdcage atrium reception and Michelin-starred restaurants. Real-life royals clamor to hang their hats, err crowns, at the $40,00-per-night Grand Riad, which has a cinema, library, hammam, gym, two swimming pools, a rooftop terrace and dazzling entertaining spaces.

best luxury vacations splendido

8. Splendido, A Belmond Hotel (portofino, Italy)

The most celebrated property in the entirety of the Ligurian Riviera, Splendido, A Belmond Hotel in Portofino is a playground for stars and the wealthy that’s so in-demand the ability to afford a room doesn’t even guarantee you’ll be able to snag a coveted reservation. That’s because this five-star stunner epitomizes la dolce vita in the most luxe way possible with flawlessly furnished rooms and suites, warm hospitality, fresh seafood and a heated saltwater infinity pool in a restored 16th-century former monastery with gorgeous gardens and views that inspires awe and, judging by the lack of availability, a slew of new and repeat guests.

($1,350 per night in high season)

best luxury vacations four seasons golden triangle

9. Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle (chiang Rai, Thailand)

There’s glamping and then there’s whatever the heck would be an appropriate name to convey the total and utter luxury of the tented accommodations at the Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle in northern Thailand at the border of Myanmar and Laos. Deluxe tents flaunt outdoor decks with outdoor showers and wooden hot tubs, plus unobstructed views of Ruak River, mountains and jungle. Besides unwinding in the most magical setting, the chance to interact with rescued elephants, trek through bamboo forests and Thai-inspired spa rituals promises to be an adventure you will never, ever, ever, ever forget.

best luxury vacations ho 770 tel plaza athe 769 ne 769 e

10. Hôtel Plaza Athénée (paris, France)

Did you really think we’d get all the way through a list of the best luxury vacations without mentioning Paris? The City of Light has more extraordinary five-star hotels than almost anywhere else. But some places just shine brighter than the rest. Occupying a prestigious perch on tree-lined Avenue Montaigne, the fashionable and oh-so photogenic Hôtel Plaza Athénée is a legend with an illustrious history dating back to 1913 and almost too many stunning spots to snap envy-inducing pics. It’s also home to the largest and most trés chic suite in all of Paris. The price tag? A wallet-busting $25,000 per night.

best luxury vacations necker island

11. Necker Island (british Virgin Islands)

A private island is the actual dream. Not like a castaway-level remote. We’d much prefer a secluded spot where our nearest and dearest can come along for the fantasy fun. Necker Island has 20 uniquely luxe lodgings, palm-fringed beaches, tennis courts, amazing wildlife habitats (keep your eyes peeled for giant tortoises, lemurs and flamingos) and even a sushi kayak delivered by mermaids in the pool. Because why the heck not dive into a plate of fatty tuna without ever getting out of the water? Staying at the 75-acre utopia requires a full buyout. So all the aforementioned awesomeness is included and exclusively for your crew.

best luxury vacations hotel metropole

12. Hôtel Métropole Monte-carlo (monaco)

Monaco may be the second smallest country but it packs an incomprehensible amount of poshness into less than one square mile. Where do discerning travelers with deep pockets stay? Hôtel Métropole Monte-Carlo , a gorgeous, independently operated Belle Époque-style property in the glamorous Carré d'Or. Go for a dip in the Karl Lagerfeld-designed pool, book yourself a haute couture self-care treatment at the Givenchy-branded spa (don’t forget to carve out some time for the hammam and caldarium, too) and indulge in a fancy lunch. Is the lobster salad worth $75? Yes, and it pairs perfectly with a fine bottle of bubbly!

best luxury vacations gaia

13. Villa Gaia (villefranche-sur-mer, France)

You might know Villefranche-Sur-Mer as the enchanting village where many scenes from “Emily in Paris” were shot. What the marketing maven didn’t have access to (and def would have swooned over)? Villa Gaia from Amavia Collection encapsulates all the decadent elements of Côte d’Azur in the most delicious and dreamy way. Overlooking Cap Ferrat, this exquisite and exclusive pad has five ocean-view bedrooms with balconies, both indoor and outdoor pools, a sauna, a state-of-the-art fitness center, a screening room, an insane art collection and concierge service. Did we mention a Michelin-starred chef will whip up all your mouthwatering meals. Simply divine.

best luxury vacations mahali

14. Mahali Mzuri (kenya)

Googling “luxury safari” will pull up some pretty epic results. For an outrageously awesome and over-the-top upscale safari adventure to beat all others, Sir Richard Branson, the billionaire and unofficial king of all things opulent, has you covered. Located in the Motorogi Conservancy and ensconced by 13,500 hectares of bush, Mahali Mzuri , which translates to “beautiful place” in Swahili, is an ultra-exclusive camp with just 12 uniquely designed, totally tricked-out tents featuring every imaginable comfort. Twice daily game drives with experienced guides, gourmet meals, cocktails and wines and relaxing in the lodge are also part of the bucket-list experience.

best luxury vacations sixth sense

15. Six Senses Zighy Bay (oman)

Hugged by majestic mountains and the sparkling sea, Six Senses Zighy Bay is a resplendent resort in Oman with an out-of-this-world wellness center and inspired cultural offerings. We can’t think of any luxury lover who wouldn’t be elated by the lavish suites with bespoke furnishings and private pools. Though an even more over-the-top option does exist and that’s The Private Reserve. Get ready to squeal with delight because the 32,292-square-foot Arabian-palace-style compound has a private beach, giant pool, indoor cinema, wine cellar, butler service, chef, paragliding arrival and sunset excursion to the Sabatyn Plateau and costs a whopping $22,000 per night.

10 Luxury Destinations That Belong on Your Travel Bucket List

From France to the Seychelles, these luxe vacation spots are absolutely worth visiting.

anse source d'argent taken at sunset from a drone

After all the pandemic-related restrictions and isolation, many people are clamoring to book flights and make up for lost time. And since travel has been on the back burner these past few years, those with wanderlust are pouring thousands of hard-earned dollars into visiting the most luxurious destinations in the world. While luxury can be subjective—for example, "luxury" could mean staying at a boutique hotel in a quaint European village, taking a ski trip in the snowy mountains of Aspen, booking a wellness retreat in the desert, going on an action-packed African safari, or relaxing on turquoise beaches in the Caribbean —we think any trip is a luxury if you pack it with activities that speak to you. Here are 10 of the best luxury destinations around the world to consider for unrivaled natural beauty, exceptional hospitality, and over-the-top excursions and experiences. We’ve even provided hotel recommendations to make vacation-planning that much easier.

dubai skyline and jumeirah open beach

In this Persian Gulfside oasis, wealth runneth over in the form of flashy sports cars, modern architecture and man-made islands boasting panoramic views of the ocean and some of the world’s tallest buildings, including the 163-story Burj Khalifa. Start your trip with a business class flight on Emirates for the gold standard of in-flight luxury, including full three-course menus, twinkling star ceilings, and, yes, the famous bar featured in the second Sex and the City movie.

Where to Stay : Atlantis The Royal —which actually dubs itself as the “most ultra-luxury experiential resort in the world”—paid Beyoncé a reported $24 million for a one-hour concert as part of its opening weekend. Needless to say, it was symbolic of the lengths in which this brand-new hotel will take to provide an unforgettably extravagant vacation. The property is home to 17 world-class restaurants, 43 stories of modern suites, a holistic spa, as well as multiple pools with adjacent Bellagio-esque fountains. Cloud 22, a rooftop bar and club area with private cabanas and an oversized infinity pool, offers views of the entire Palm Island and is the building’s crown jewel.

The Bahamas

aerial view of exumas cays

When it comes to Caribbean destinations, the Bahamas is having a major resurgance. Beyond its turquoise water that extends miles beyond its 700 coral islands, the famous vacation spot caters to a luxury clientele in many forms. Visitors can either enjoy the hustle and bustle of Nassau—which boasts five-star hotels, golf courses, and an abundance of ports to charter daily yacht trips—or they can venture to more remote islands like the Exumas, which harbor more private and secluded beachside experiences.

Where to Stay : Opt for an island that’s off the beaten path to really immerse yourself in the beauty of the Bahamas’ sand, sun, and palms. The Abaco Club on Winding Bay stuns with a world-renowned golf course, beautiful beaches, and members of this private club have the ability to rent entire waterside homes for intimate soirees.

dawn in small viilage, lofoten and magic northern lights in sky

Norway is certainly worth adding to your luxury travel bucket list. The Scandinavian country features a wonderful range of topography, so guests can visit pebble-lined beaches, majestic fjords, green-capped mountains, and even plush forests. Its commitment to sustainability and preservation puts nature at the forefront, making it one of the most breathtakingly scenic regions on this list, no matter the season.

Where to Stay : Consider a start in northern city Trondheim at the trendy Britannia Hotel (which also hosts Norway’s most famous Michelin-starred restaurant, Speilsalen ) before heading outwards to reside at waterside Naustet Stokkoy . This well-appointed modern lake house boasts a full chef’s kitchen and oversized wooden deck where you can dive for scallops. If the planning is overwhelming, Up Norway specializes in creating individualized itineraries for the luxury traveler and incorporating hidden gems, like the stunning Øyna Cultural Landscape Hotel , which is built into a mountain and camouflaged by surrounding foliage.

beautiful sunset cityscape view of the santa maria nouvelle duomo and the town of florence, in the italian tuscany

There is no shortage of places to explore in Italy. After all, its nickname, Bel Paese , translates to “beautiful country.” One can, of course, find splendor in its range of delicious food—especially when there's a table set among breathtaking backdrops like the sun-drenched valleys of Naples, the canals of Venice, and the cliffside towns of Amalfi Coast. Italy is proof that the notion of luxury can be simple and straightforward if the food and its surroundings are allowed to speak for themselves.

Where to Stay : Rome's Hotel Eden has well-appointed, palace-like interiors that are filled with plush velvet furniture, pleated sconces, and floor-to-ceiling Italian marble. The staff goes above and beyond to make guests feel extra special with monogrammed leather key holders and a Rolls Royce car service. Book a reservation at on-site La Terrazza for what will be, perhaps, the most memorable meal of your trip…and maybe even your life. If you're craving something more low-key, consider the ultra-chic Grand Universe Lucca , which is located in an adorable town square in Tuscany with cobblestone streets and a weekend antique market that puts stateside options to shame.

The Seychelles

anse source d'argent taken at sunset from a drone

Located 995 miles off the coast of Kenya, the Seychelles has quickly emerged as the world’s premiere honeymoon destination—and rightfully so. The cluster of islands is so removed from modern civilization that it takes over 18 hours to reach by plane from New York. Aside from the feeling of complete seclusion, guests can go SCUBA diving, snorkel, sail, relax on private beaches, and hike mountains with panoramic views, making it equal parts relaxing and full of vigor.

Where to Stay : The Anantara Maia Seychelles Villas provide unparalleled service with private accommodations, a personal butler, and infinity pools that stretch deep into the steep cliffs that welcome the ocean breeze. Here, you have everything you need to feel relaxed, detached, and then some.

aerial view of sea against blue sky

No list of luxury travel destinations would be complete without the inclusion of the Maldives. This South Asian destination is practically synonymous with opulence, known for its overwater bungalows that have visitors become practically one with the emerald ocean beneath them. This is the spot to kick up your legs and enjoy the dazzling crystal-clear water, eat meals with locally foraged ingredients like coconut, tuna, and chilies; and experience world-class, in-room spa treatments.

Where to Stay : No detail has been overlooked at Hilton Maldives Amingiri Resort & Spa . In fact, the brand-new, word-class resort has been recently been ranked as one of the best in the world with its jaw-dropping architectural beauty and host of amenities like a spa, fitness center, and even a tea lounge—all perched above water teeming with brightly colored tropical fish.

Buenos Aires may be regarded as the Europe of South America, but the country of Argentina, which is larger than Texas and Mexico combined, is chock-full of other appealing areas deserving of fanfare. Natural wonders from massive waterfalls to glaciers can be observed during the day, and you can reward yourself after all your adventures with an incredible steak dinner (an Argentine specialty).

Where to Stay : Wander to wine country and book a stay at SB Winemaker’s House & Spa Suites . Several rooms come equipped with fully integrated in-room spa features and services, including a steam room, sensations shower, dry sauna, and massage table, so guests can enjoy wine-themed treatments, sip the property’s vino, and take in the sights and sounds of peaceful rural living. You can even book a private seaplane for luxury day and overnight trips to see the aforementioned sights in the Andes Mountains, Esteros del Iberá, and Patagonia.

In our desperate attempt to escape the stresses of everyday life, we sometimes forget the magnificence that can be found in our own backyard. Sure, a flight to Hawaii isn’t quick (at least for East Coasters), but this taste of luxury doesn’t require a passport, making it an ideal option for those who’d rather not go through customs and immigration upon arrival. The benefit of traveling to the Aloha State is the range of exploration — every island is unique, from hip and cosmopolitan Honolulu to Jurassic Park-esque Kauai. You can create a diversified itinerary to see it all, while not skimping on the five-star accommodations that will provide comfort during the off-hours.

Where to Stay : Head to Maui and stay in one of the well-appointed suites or villas at the Fairmont Kea Lani . All are just steps from Polo Beach, where you can observe whales in the winter and sunbathe, snorkel and swim all spring and summer. Don't miss E Ala Ē, a traditional Hawaiian sunrise chant on the resort's beach that helps welcome each new day.

paris skyline with eiffel tower at sunset, aerial view, france

From the lavender fields of Provence to the beaches of Saint-Tropez, it’s no surprise why many Americans fall in love with this romantic country and never want to leave. In fact, the effortless luxury and blasé attitude exuded by locals can be so extreme that you may not even feel worthy at times during your trip.

Where to Stay : The Four Seasons Hotel George V embodies French wealth and prosperity with gold-adorned furniture, light fixtures, and framed paintings fit for, well, a king. Just off the historic Champs-Élysées, the famed hotel’s suites enjoy some of the most impressive views of the Eiffel Tower with shops like Chanel, Dior, and Yves Saint Laurent just a stone’s throw away.

aerial of seljalandsfoss waterfall at sunset, iceland

While it is typically billed as an active, nature-filled trip, there are opportunities to explore this otherworldly island in style and comfort. Iceland has quietly emerged as a premiere wellness destination, thanks to its low population, vast uninhabited land, and ability to allow guests to disconnect from the world around them.

Where to Stay : The Retreat sits adjacent to Reykjanes’s famed Blue Lagoon, offering guests private access to the geothermal pools and the spa treatments that can take place in them. Views from rooms provide panoramic views of the ice blue water below, along with the craggy rocks that cradle them. The decor is muted and minimalistic, but calm and inviting, featuring rainfall showers and standalone tubs so guests can pamper themselves in between all the pampering that the hotel does for them.

For you, we have 10 money-saving travel swaps. From beach life on a budget to indulgent all-inclusive getaways to superior spa holidays, these alternative destinations offer luxury for less—mere miles from perennially popular and pricier places.

RECOMMENDED: The best cheap travel vacations in the U.S.

Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.

Best spots offering luxe for less

1.  for a romantic rendezvous: palm springs, california.

For a romantic rendezvous: Palm Springs, California

Make your California dreamin’ a reality with a trip to Palm Springs, California. From hiking to golfing to exploring the desert, there's much to see and do, including soaring 8,500 feet above the cliffs of Chino Canyon on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway , the world's largest rotating tram car. About an hour east, explore Joshua Tree National Park . Then soak and slumber like a celebrity at A-lister favorite Two Bunch Palms , where a day at the adults-only wellness retreat can begin with sunrise salutations, a sage cleansing workshop, and a soak in 600-year-old natural springs followed by spa treatments, and conclude with dinner, fireside s'mores with spiked hot chocolate, and stargazing.

2.  For a budget beach break: Delray Beach, Florida

For a budget beach break: Delray Beach, Florida

Boasting the most beaches in the U.S., Florida is a popular beach vacation destination that can get expensive. But just 20 miles south of Palm Beach and 53 miles north of Miami, there's charming Delray Beach, boasting two miles of pristine shoreline, a vibrant nightlife scene and loads of cultural activity for so much less than you'd spend on a trip to South Florida. Take a walk down Atlantic Avenue , the largest main street in Florida, which is flanked by dozens of art galleries, restaurants, bars, and boutique shops. Stay steps from all the action at the 141-room The Ray , which features tropical modern decor, a rooftop pool, gym, restaurants and bars, and in-room amenities like eucalyptus bed linens, Frette towels and robes, and Byredo bath products.

3.  For a spa holiday minus the splurge: Saratoga Springs, New York

For a spa holiday minus the splurge: Saratoga Springs, New York

In search of a wellness break, but can't afford to break the bank at a pricey spa? Saratoga Springs offers the perfect mix of pampering and affordable pricing. Three hours north of New York City, it boasts natural carbonated mineral waters. Take a refreshing dip in one of two mineral water pools at Saratoga Spa State Park and experience the healing benefits of a soak in soothing spring water at The Gideon Putnam . The boutique hotel is located within the state park and has a variety of spa packages that include accommodations, soaking in the mineral springs at the Roosevelt Baths & Spa, and massage.

4.  For high-rollers avoiding the Strip: Laughlin, Nevada

For high-rollers avoiding the Strip: Laughlin, Nevada

Forget the ultra-pricey hotels on the Las Vegas Strip and head 90 minutes south to Laughlin, the “original” Las Vegas, with slightly less glitz and considerably more bargain. With eight resorts totaling about 9,000 rooms, there are plenty of options—most for less than $50 a night. By day, get outdoors and kayak or river cruise along the Colorado River, which runs through the heart of town. By night, live like a high roller with gourmet meals, world-class shows, and casino games. Go big and stay at Aquarius Casino Resort , Laughlin's largest hotel, which offers room and show packages.

5.  For a deal on an all-inclusive: Hawley, Pennsylvania

For a deal on an all-inclusive: Hawley, Pennsylvania

Want an all-inclusive vacation without too much expense? Head to  the Lodge at Woodloch  in the Pocono Mountains. Surrounded by 500 acres of woodlands, the 59-room, adults-only wellness resort offers guests luxurious linens, plush robes and slippers, and rosemary mint bath and shower products. Each stay includes accommodations, three daily meals, a choice of 35 daily activities, including yoga, forest bathing, hiking, and art classes, plus group fitness, lectures, cooking demonstrations, and use of the hotel's amenities like the pool, whirlpools, steam rooms, saunas, hydromassage WaterWalls, and gym.

6.  For a shopping vacation: East Rutherford, New Jersey

For a shopping vacation: East Rutherford, New Jersey

Just five miles from Manhattan, East Rutherford, New Jersey, is unlikely to be top-of-mind when seeking a shopping holiday, but the massive 3-million-square-foot American Dream mall and entertainment center has many of the same designer shops as Los Angeles and New York. The palatial shoppers' paradise offers glitzy and glamorous shopping from designers like Gucci and Tiffany & Co. along with cost-conscious retailers plus one dozen family-friendly attractions, including Nickelodeon Universe Theme Park , the largest indoor theme park in the western hemisphere, Big Snow , North America's only indoor real-snow park, and Skudin Surf , an indoor freshwater wave pool for surfers and wannabe surfers. While there are hotels nearby, soothe aching feet after a day of retail therapy at SoJo Spa Club , nine miles away. Staying overnight at the spa's boutique Hotel SoJo includes entry to the spa and its infinity pool, hydrotherapy pool, heated baths, saunas, and relaxation areas for each day of your stay.

7.  For an inexpensive island-y getaway: Florida Keys

For an inexpensive island-y getaway: Florida Keys

Dreaming of a Hawaiian getaway, but your wallet won't cooperate? Head down to the Conch Republic off Florida's southernmost tip. Connected by the 110-mile Overseas Highway, each island in the 120-mile island chain is a unique piece of paradise. Snorkeling here is magical, particularly at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park , the first underwater preserve in the U.S., which has a coral reef and an 8.5-foot bronze sculpture of Jesus Christ. No trip to the Florida Keys is complete without a walk down Duval Street in Key West. Just around the corner from Duval Street, Simonton Court Historic Inn & Guesthouse is a former cigar factory turned boutique hotel that is an adults-only oasis.

8.  For a bargain in the northeast: Block Island, Rhode Island

For a bargain in the northeast: Block Island, Rhode Island

Love Martha’s Vineyard or Nantucket but not the prices? Consider Block Island, which boasts just as much New England charm as the two more famous Massachusetts islands, but for far less money. Located just nine miles off Rhode Island, Block Island has 17 miles of beaches punctuated with lighthouses, perfect for a relaxing New England getaway on the island that is 3 miles by 7 miles. Spend the night at Spring House Hotel , the oldest and largest hotel on the island. Built in 1852, the 32-room Victorian-style hotel offers panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and impeccable hospitality.

9.  For an outdoorsy adventure: Denver, Colorado

For an outdoorsy adventure: Denver, Colorado

The Mile High City is packed with everything you could want on a vacation for a fraction of the cost of other cities. While there's plenty to do indoors like touring the U.S. Mint and seeing how candy is made at Hammond's Candies, it's the outdoors that beckon, including nearby Red Rocks Amphitheater and Mesa Verde National Park and 90-minutes away, Rocky Mountain National Park . Stay at The Maven , a dog-friendly boutique hotel with loft-style rooms in the Dairy Block micro-district. The lively alley behind the hotel is packed with excellent bars and restaurants and the hotel is a treasure trove of art with more than 700 paintings, sculptures, and photographs all from Colorado artists.

10.  For a big city escape with out the big prices: Brooklyn, New York

For a big city escape with out the big prices: Brooklyn, New York

New York City is one of the most popular tourist destinations, but it's also one of the most expensive. Enjoy iconic Big Apple sights, but save massive amounts of money by staying—and playing—in Brooklyn. Book a room at The William Vale , the only luxury hotel in hipster haven Williamsburg, and you might not even want to leave Brooklyn. Each of the hotel's 183 rooms has a balcony and floor-to-ceiling windows with impressive views of Manhattan. From catching shows at Brooklyn Bowl or the Brooklyn Academy of Music to dining at one of the borough's nine Michelin-starred restaurants and grabbing drinks at Time Out Market to enjoying soaks, saunas, and spa treatments at cityWell or BATHHOUSE , there's no shortage of living the luxe life in New York City's most populous borough. Bon Voyage!

10 of the Best Luxury Coastal Vacations Around the World

These are the most exclusive, over-the-top locations to add to your travel wish list.

getaway luxury travel

Marco Bottigelli/Getty Images

Real luxury is all about exclusivity. In hospitality, that translates to offering travelers a stellar experience with personalized touches, comfort, and amenities that surpass expectations. Add to the mix a stunning natural location, breathtaking sea and ocean views, private beaches , unprecedented levels of privacy, and attention to detail, and you'll get a better understanding of what you can expect in each of the 10 luxury coastal vacations on our list.

From classic locales that stand the test of time to emerging spots that are carving out a reputation for pampering their clientele, these waterfront vacation destinations will make you feel like royalty.

Monte Carlo, Monaco

DaveLongMedia/Getty Images

Few destinations rival Monte Carlo when it comes to opulence, exclusivity, and excessiveness. With its world-famous casino, five-star hotels, Michelin-starred restaurants , picture-perfect Mediterranean views, marina, and designer boutiques, it's the go-to place for the one percent seeking extravagant amenities and world-class service.

Case in point: The Diamond Suite Prince Rainier III at the iconic Hôtel de Paris boasts 9,000 square feet of sophistication, including nearly 4,000 square feet of private exterior spaces, where a heated infinity pool commands what may be the best Mediterranean view in all of Monaco.

Another unexpected bonus? The 45,000 euros-a-night suite's décor features personal objects and memorabilia of Monaco's royal family.

And if you'd rather sail into Monte Carlo, its famous marina is equipped with 26 superyacht berths, which cost anywhere between 1,351 euros per day and up to 74,933 euros per day during the famous Formula 1 Grand Prix car race.

Peninsula Papagayo, Costa Rica

Terraxplorer/Getty Images

Costa Rica may be known for its rugged landscape, yoga retreats , and biodiversity, but when well-heeled travelers want to experience its untouched beauty without sacrificing luxury amenities, they head to Peninsula Papagayo . Nestled on Costa Rica's lush North Pacific Coast in the province of Guanacaste, this 1,400-acre coastal community is an upscale hideaway offering access to miles of uncrowded beaches, the country's most exclusive real estate, a 180-berth marina, a beach club, and one of the most spectacular golf courses in the world , the Arnold Palmer-designed Four Seasons golf course, located in the storied resort. Peninsula Papagayo is also home to Andaz, along with a growing number of branded luxury residences and private villas with resort-style amenities.

In November, the coastal community will also add a new wilderness outpost inside the spectacular Palmares Preserve that will feature a series of hanging bridges, challenge courses, zip lines, and more than 12 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, available exclusively for Peninsula Papagayo residents and resort guests. The same month, the Four Seasons resort will welcome guests to its new six-bedroom residence ($30,000 per night), with a stunning 150-foot swimming pool and breathtaking beach and jungle views.

Bodrum, Turkey

AegeanBlue/Getty Images

Dubbed the "St. Tropez of Turkey," Bodrum has a very distinct character of its own, but the level of luxury it offers can easily rival that of its famous French counterpart.

Located in southwestern Turkey and overlooking the turquoise waters of both the Aegean and Mediterranean seas, Bodrum is steeped in history and stunning nature — and a number of world-class luxury resorts such as the Mandarin Oriental, Edition, Le Méridien, Six Senses, and Jumeirah have found that particularly attractive and fitting of their clientele.

Celebrities and royalty love Bodrum because it treats them to some of the best Mediterranean views and five-star amenities, including private helipads and marinas (Yalıkavak Marina won the World's Best Superyacht Marina award in 2018-2019 and 2020-2021), world-class shopping (this summer, Hermes, Chanel, and Missoni will set up shop at the Mandarin Oriental), spas with hammam rooms in a league of their own, private beaches, and top-notch nightclubs.

Côte d'Azur, France

Christopher Larson/Travel + Leisure

This sun-drenched, lavender-filled region of southeast France, which stretches between St. Tropez and Menton, started drawing the Old Continent's aristocracy who were seeking a respite from the cold, rain, and cloudy skies of the north in the 19th century. Celebrities and dignitaries from all walks of life followed suit, transforming its then-quiet and unassuming fishing villages into glitzy seaside resorts filled with sprawling villas, grand hotels , private beach clubs, and Michelin-starred restaurants.

Today, one of those hotels, the iconic Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes, is practically a household name and the place to be if you're part of the world elite. Villa Sainte-Anne, the hotel's newest hideaway, opened its doors this summer with postcard-worthy views of the Mediterranean, a swimming pool, a sauna, a gym, and exclusive access to the resort's own Aquariva Super boat. The $14,000-a-night rate includes a butler, chauffeur, and reserved cabana at the hotel's beach club.

Amalfi Coast, Italy

Few regions are as instantly recognizable as the Amalfi Coast without being home to any one particular landmark or monument. Its dramatic cliffside towns, bougainvillea-covered residences, fragrant lemon groves, and dreamy beaches fronted by the azure waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea look like they belong in a fairy tale. So, no wonder this spectacular region and its palaces became the go-to vacation spot for British nobility in the early 20th century, and since then, has exploded in popularity with the jet-set crowd.

Today, as soon as temperatures start rising, its waters fill up with private yachts (Marina Coppola's Porto di Amalfi is one of the best superyacht marinas in Europe), and the ancient streets of its villages become abuzz with CEOs, Hollywood A-listers, and royalty. The Amalfi Coast is home to a roster of ultra-luxe hotels, including the iconic Caruso, A Belmond Hotel, housed in a spectacular 11th-century palazzo, where a room in June will cost you upwards of $5,000 per night and includes a two-hour morning boat ride along the coastline. This year, the Amalfi Coast welcomed another luxury property — the spectacular Borgo Santandrea , which is built into the cliffs overlooking the village of Conca dei Marini. Here, guests get access to a private beach, along with breathtaking sea vistas from the comfort of their pool suites.

Hamptons, New York

Monica Murphy/Getty Images

The East End of Long Island has been a magnet for New York's finest seeking tranquility, beautiful beaches, world-class wineries, and a vibrant cultural scene for decades. The charming historic towns once inhabited by farmers and fishermen are now some of the country's most exclusive zip codes , where politicians, celebrities, and financiers gather every summer. East Hampton's streets are lined with boutiques like Cartier, Prada, Chanel, and Valentino. And trendy eateries such as Tutto Il Giorno and 75 Main in Southampton, and Le Bilboquet in Sag Harbor are booked weeks in advance. Getting here is usually by way of a helicopter or private plane, and if you don't own an oceanfront mansion here, you can always stay at one of the sophisticated boutique hotels , like Marram Montauk , The Roundtree in Amagansett, Baron's Cove, or Shou Sugi Ban House , the area's first wellness retreat.

Palm Jumeirah, Dubai

Peter Adams/Getty Images

Even by Dubai standards — and let's be honest, they are of stratospheric dimension — The Palm is an incredible feat of human ingenuity that is now home to some of the most exclusive resorts and real estate in the world.

Visitors to this man-made island can enjoy breathtaking views of the Arabian Gulf and ever-changing Dubai skyline, along with some pretty over-the-top amenities. One&Only The Palm, for example, is located on a private peninsula and has its own marina, an enormous 9,149-square-foot temperature-controlled swimming pool flanked by palms, air-conditioned cabanas, and alcoves. Another resort, the beachfront Kempinski Hotel & Residences, which sits on the west crescent of Palm Jumeirah, features 24-karat gold ceilings, 6,400 chandeliers (including one in the grand lobby that's comprised of 40,000 Swarovski crystals), several private rooftop pools, a spa with 23 treatment rooms, and Dubai's largest indoor pool.

Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef, Australia

Uwe Moser/Getty Images

This secluded stretch of land surrounded by Australia's Great Barrier Reef has to be seen to be believed. As the only island resort in this part of the world, Lizard Island has welcomed celebrities seeking privacy and natural beauty. With only 40 rooms and villas and two dozen private white-sand beaches that treat travelers to a snorkeling experience unlike anywhere else in the world, Lizard Island is the pinnacle of exclusivity.

And the resort's newest accommodation, which opened earlier this year, is in a luxury league of its own. For a cool $10,000 a night, The House offers a three-bedroom, three-bathroom beachfront residence featuring a rooftop with daybeds, an infinity pool overlooking one of three private beaches, a guest house, and a dedicated staff, including a chef. Exclusive use of the resort's Searanger boat, evening cruises, and daily spa treatments are also included when you book The House for a minimum of three nights.

Michele Westmorland/Getty Images

This French Polynesian island surrounded by a fairy-tale lagoon conjures images of elegant overwater villas and beautiful white-sand beaches set against lush, tropical scenery and Mount Otemanu's unmistakable silhouette.

The list of five-star resorts here reads like a who's who of luxury hospitality: the Four Seasons, St. Regis, InterContinental, and Le Méridien. But if you're looking for unique and exclusive amenities, the Conrad Bora Bora is unrivaled. This year, the resort added a new floating helipad in the middle of the Bora Bora lagoon. It's the only resort in the area with access to a breathtaking private island that Conrad guests can rent for special events or simply to relax.

Fogo Island

Deb Snelson/Getty Images

Almost a decade after it opened its doors, Fogo island Inn remains one of the most exclusive destinations in the world. This remote property, located on an "island off an island" in Canada's Newfoundland, might not fit some people's definition of a luxury destination — after all, it doesn't have white-sand beaches or swaying palms — but that's exactly what makes it so special. Perched on stilts on the "farthest edge of the Earth" overlooking the mighty waters of the North Atlantic, the award-winning Fogo Island Inn has 29 one-of-a-kind modern rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows offering spectacular vistas and an experience unlike any other (iceberg tours and whale-watching are a must).

And while the property's guest rooms and suites are quite a sight to behold (with rates starting at $1,875), the most legendary space is its dining room, which features vaulted ceilings, oversized windows, and wildflower-inspired chandeliers. The seasonal menu, curated by chef Timothy Charles, is an ode to the hotel's surrounding landscape, focusing on plants and seafood found exclusively on and around the area.
