Trip of a lifetime! Limited out on coho salmon!

Veteran Owned Business

Welcome to Juneau Alaska, voted the most Beautiful Capital City in the US!

Your excursion will meet at the famous Goldbelt Tramway under the cables near the front entrance. Your guide will meet you there 15 minutes before departure with a sign that says “Alaska Anglers Club.” After a short briefing we will be on our way.  We keep our tours small and personal. You will ride comfortably in a 15 passenger van to your fishing destination. Your experienced angler will give you a narrated ride and some brief history along the way. After we arrive at the destination and licensing is taken care of, which you can purchase from your angler, we will get your shoe size, rod choice (spin cast  or fly fishing) and find out if you are a lefty or a righty.

Your guide will make sure your gear is ready for success. If you need any assistance with casting techniques, you’ll have an expert at your disposal.  We’re not only guiding you to show you how to fish, we want to share the experience with you.

The actual fishing time varies by location. We’ll find the fish, but sometimes the walking distance can vary depending on the terrain and the 20-foot tide swings! Let’s rip some lips! Alaska’s world-class fishing at your fingertips.

Fly Fishing in Southeast Alaska

Welcome to Tidewater Fly Fishing! We offer partial-day and full-day private, guided fly fishing trips in the salt and fresh waters surrounding Juneau, Alaska, targeting King Salmon, Pink Salmon, Chum Salmon, Silver Salmon, Dolly Varden Char and Coastal Cutthroat Trout. If you're interested in booking a trip, please visit the Book Now page and we'll get back to you as soon as possible.

The waters of Southeast Alaska provide a uniquely spectacular setting for fly fishing.  Small streams rapidly descend the steep snow-capped mountains of the Tongass National Forest, eventually emptying into pristine estuaries. This is where schools of fish usually roam before returning to their natal streams to spawn. This annual act attracts migrating shore birds, sea birds and marine mammals alike. The health of these numerous small watersheds provides perfect over-wintering habitat for Dolly Varden char and Coastal Cutthroat trout, which wander out to sea in the early spring to feed. It also helps support multiple runs of salmon throughout the summer.

Catching bright salmon in the saltwater on a fly rod is a the thrill of a lifetime, so come join us! Follow these links for more information on our guided trips  and fishing opportunities.

OUR VISITORS LOVE US

We had the very best experience fishing in Alaska! From scheduling the fishing excursion with Captain Kevin months before we were going to meet him! He and his deck hand Jack made it the very best experience for our family! We were able to fish for halibut and catch our limit and have it processed and shipped back home to enjoy later! We would HIGHLY recommend this trip to anyone and Everyone!

Thank you Captain Kevin and Jack for a very special day where we made lots of great memories!

Capt Kevin and deckhand Eli are the best in the business. Capt Kevins experience put us on the fish right away and we absolutely crushed em the entire trip. Deckhand Eli took excellent care of us. Rigged all the gear perfectly, netted all the fish like a pro, and sent us home with a bag full of fillets. Look no further when booking your next trip. Thanks again guys!

We had a wonderful experience with Captain Kevin and his first mate Eli. We were able to catch several salmon, we saw several whales and overall had a great time. Captain Kevin was very knowledgeable and informative about the wildlife and environment around Juneau and gave our group a great understanding of the area. His first mate, Eli was delightful and extremely helpful and worked very hard to make sure we had a great time. I highly recommend Lost in Alaska Adventures!

— Bradley L

Capt Kevin and First mate Micah were wonderful. Communication before trip was great. He picked us up right on time. Boat has two 250 horse motors so you get where your going fast. Others had smaller motors and had less fishing time. We caught three nice King Salmon. Micah is very social and funny. We highly recommend Capt Kevin.

Juneau Alaska Fishing

Grab a line and get hooked on alaska's favorite pastime.

Don't be surprised when you see a local calendar marked not with birthdays and anniversary dates, but with tidal schedules and salmon migrations. Fishing is that big of a deal around here. Between the Pacific halibut and five species of Pacific salmon, it's a wonder any work gets done.

If fishing in Juneau is on your "to-do" list, you are in luck, because dozens of longtime Alaskans operate Coast Guard licensed charter fishing boats. Full- and half-day charters carry no more than six people at a time to assure lots of rod time for each passenger. There are also local companies that take you on guided fly fishing trips, either in a skiff, onshore, or by hopping a floatplane to a remote river or lake. You can also rent a skiff or charter a vessel to customize your own fishing adventure.

A word about halibut catch limits: The 2024 regulations limit halibut charter sportfishing participants to one fish under 40" through July 14 or 36" on or after July 15, OR one fish over 80" per day. Fridays are closed to halibut retention July 19 through September 13.  A 40" halibut is in the 22-pound range (dressed); an 80" halibut is in the 208-pound range (dressed). With any luck, you can be the envy of your neighbors back home.

State of Alaska fishing licenses are required, but you can purchase one from your charter boat captain or at major retail outlets. Once you fill your cooler , consider dropping off your fish at one of Juneau's fish processors, where they will process and ship it to you once you return home.

Now that's what we call convenience food -- fresh from Alaska waters to "home plate," where you can brag about your Juneau fishing prowess and enjoy great seafood !

Knowledgeable captains, like Captain Alan, bring a wealth of experience and insight into the halibut’s behavior, guiding anglers to optimal fishing spots and showing fishing techniques. Once you set sail, Captain Alan shares insights about the region, adding an educational and engaging aspect to the halibut excursion. The journey is not just about the catch; it’s an immersive experience that connects participants with the beauty of Alaska. Whether you choose a half-day or full-day charter, the thrill of the catch, coupled with the breathtaking scenery and professional guidance, makes halibut fishing in Alaska through our guided halibut tours an adventure to remember.

Know Your Catch

We find halibut in about 300ft of water. They are strong, aggressive fish and they put up a fight! It will be a fun battle to get one to the boat.

The halibut fishing technique involves “jigging” with the rod, which is fun for both seasoned anglers and those new to the fishing scene.

Once you catch the delicious fish, there are many different options for preparing halibut dishes. Halibut freezes well and can be prepared in multiple ways. These include seared, pan-grilled, and more in either tacos, bowls, sandwiches, or more. Halibut can be fried, grilled, blackened, or prepared in any way you want with different seasonings.

The fish is normally targeted in June through the rest of the summer. This is when they are most plentiful and there are more opportunities for your group to haul them in.

Map of Juneau, Alaska

Juneau, Alaska, is an Inside Passage city that faces the calm waters of this remarkable area. With a population of around 32,000 people, Juneau, Alaska's State Capital, still has a small-town feel. It sits north of Ketchikan, South of Haines, and East of Douglas Island. Juneau borders the Tongass National Forest and the Atlin/Teix'gi Aan Tlein Provincial Park . As a year-round vacation option, this is an excellent winter retreat, as well as a hotspot for summer travel.

Juneau's fantastic location provides easy access to tall mountains, excellent fisheries, many glaciers, a rich native culture, art, shopping, and fabulous food. With a range of lodging options, it is no wonder, so many visitors make Juneau their destination.

Getting here can be challenging. Many people arrive by cruise ship, but you can also take the Alaska Marine Highway if you want to bring your vehicle or RV. Juneau has an international airport , and you fly here directly.

Why Visit Juneau?

Juneau offers so many options for activities that there is something here for everyone. The deep Native American culture , many museums, and art galleries, and public art installations throughout the city are impressive. The closeness of nature and the feel of a small town are also their rewards. The list of things to do here is long.

Wildlife viewing in Juneau is dominated by the way the land meets the sea. Whale watching tours are popular as the humpback whales feed in small pods using a bubble net method. Orcas are here and often follow the humpbacks. On occasion, you may spot beluga whales too. There are many sea birds and rookeries here, and it is easy to spot bald eagles, sea lions, and otters also.

Hiking near Juneau is fantastic as you can follow the paths that many people take or wander off and up a lonely 7,000-foot mountain. The area in summer is a wildflower and botany paradise. There are many bears here, so always be bear-conscious.

Nearby attractions include Mendenhall Glacier with hiking to Nugget Falls or just a photo op at the Visitor's Pavilion. Tracy Arm Fjord is another popular destination that is about1.5 hours by car from Juneau. Here you can watch Sawyer Glacier calve, see icebergs, and enjoy the beautiful surroundings with the 7,000 + feet tall mountains looming. You can opt for a fly-out adventure to Admiralty Island and stop in at the Pack Creek Bear Sanctuary. This one of the best places in Alaska to safely watch brown bears. It is a short 30-minute hop in a floatplane.

The Downtown area of Juneau is rich with cultural venues, museums, fine dining, and quaint cafes. Throughout the city are many restaurants that range from quick service to high end sit-down eateries. Lodging here is not difficult either. There are many fishing resorts & lodges throughout the area, several campgrounds and RV parks, and many motels/hotels designed for families or solo anglers.

With such a wide array of options for entertainment and easy access to housing and food, Juneau remains one of the best ventures in Alaska.

Fishing Juneau, Alaska

Many anglers come to Juneau because this is the Inside Passage. While the saltwater fishing for Salmon and Halibut take center stage, especially for cruise ship passengers looking for fishing charters , there are outstanding freshwater fishing opportunities here too.

Saltwater fishing charters provides access to King Salmon , Silver Salmon , Chum Salmon , Pink Salmon , Sockeye Salmon , Halibut, Rockfish, Sea Bass, Snapper, and Lingcod. If you want to target King Salmon, the head to the waters of the Breadline just north of Juneau, you can stay local in the Gastineau Channel and target both Salmon and Halibut.

Freshwater fishing offers access to Salmon, Dolly Varden , Steelhead, Rainbow Trout , Cutthroat Trout, Brook Trout, Arctic Grayling , and Kokanee (landlocked Sockeye Salmon.) Fish Creek on Douglas Island and Gold Creek in Juneau are hot spots, as is the Eagle River, Nine Mile Creek. There are freshwater guides available, or you can find places to DIY fish.

The King Salmon season peaks in August for Freshwater fishing while the Silver Salmon season peaks from September through mid-October. If you love Steelhead, the season is early and peaks in May. Trout, Dolly Varden, and Arctic Grayling are here all year long.

There is plenty of fishing action in and around Juneau. There are spots where you can fish from shore for Salmon and Halibut, and the option to fly-out to remote locations is always there. Whatever you want to target, you can be assured that there are big fish around Juneau.

The fly fishing opportunities surrounding Juneau are some of the best in Alaska.  We have excellent Dolly Varden (char) fishing all season long.  Some locations offer an opportunity to catch coastal cutthroat trout.  Our first Pink Salmon typically arrive in late June/early July and that run lasts most of the summer.  Silver Salmon offer a more challenging angling opportunity and typically arrive mid-to-late August.  Depending on the time of year, other species you may encounter include Chum Salmon, Rainbow Trout, and Steelhead.

The Wilderness and Wildlife

All of the locations we fish are located in true wilderness. We often see eagles, bears, deer and whales while exploring their backyard. Many guests enjoy the setting as much as the fishing itself!

With years of experience and a passion for the sport, our expert fly fishing guides possess an intimate local knowledge of our rivers, streams, and estuaries that teem with fish. They understand the nuances of casting techniques, fly selection, and optimal fishing conditions, enabling them to tailor each excursion to your skill level and preferences.   Meet Our Guides

With access to a wide array of accessible streams, we are able to select the best location suited to your particular group -one that offers the best fishing opportunities available on any given day. Streams in Southeast Alaska tend to be small and relatively short but allow ample room for fly-casting. We focus our efforts in estuaries and the deeper holes and runs in the first two miles of the stream corridor. Other groups are rarely, if ever, encountered.

Southeast Alaska is blessed with abundant runs of Wild Pacific Salmon, fast-action for Dolly Varden (char), Cutthroat Trout and trophy-sized Steelhead. Fishing opportunities for these species are dictated by run timing, which tends to be fairly consistent from year to year.

Participants should be in good physical condition and able to walk over uneven ground for 1-2 miles in waders. Many of the streams we fish are remote and advanced medical support may not be possible in these locations.

As a conservation measure, all of our fishing is done on a catch-and-release basis with barb-less hooks.

My son is graduating highschool this week, earning Eagle Scout in the next 2 weeks, and turning 18 in 3 weeks. Then in August we are moving to my husbands next duty station and then in 6 months my son will be joining the Navy. I have been racking my brain trying to figure out the perfect gift for him. Both his sisters went on to college so they got a new lap top and then their sr year of college they both took trips abroad for their major.

So, is it too late in the year already to plan a trip for this fall? Also, I’ll take any recommendations you have! Thanks!

You might want to consider renting a motor home.......having the freedom to go wherever you want depending on the weather in any given location.......just after Labor Day will have the leaves turning and most of the summer tourists gone.......I would definitely choose early September over October.......

As this is a 'trip of a lifetime' type of trip; I'd say an outright no to October.

September would depend on dates. The later in September, the closer to being a no I wouldn't.

If it's a week, and they could do this in the September 7 to September 15 range, they could definitely get a very good 'outdoors' week in .

I'd offer a lot more if a better estimate of the dates could be offered.

  • This tour is not suitable for children under the age of 10.

Best Time To Go

The summer months and the shoulder seasons (late Spring and early Fall) are the best bet for any trip through Alaska, due primarily to the winter conditions causing delays and struggle for travelers.

The best time to cruise to Alaska is in the summer months, so book a cruise and keep it easy!

Having an authentic or local experience for lunch in Sitka will be paramount to feeling travelers have done it all, and all within the luxury of a one-day Alaska cruise ship stop. There are countless reasons why a cruise in Alaska is a great way to see Sitka , but more than anything it is for the convenience it offers.

Folks looking for a longer stay will enjoy the solitude and tranquility of nature, and will likely want to take it slow on hiking trails and outdoor pursuits.

Q: Is Sitka a walkable town?

Because Sitka is so small (in contrast with Alaska's main hub, Anchorage ), it can be explored on foot when the weather permits.

Q: Is it worth visiting Sitka Alaska?

Sitka is an excellent destination for people who enjoy being outdoors, don't mind the cold, and are interested in the local history of indigenous Alaskans. It's also near enough to Juneau to make a whole Alaskan adventure out of a trip.

Q: What is the best month to visit Sitka Alaska?

The best time to visit Alaska, whether by land or via a cruise , is summer because it tends to have the fairest weather.

OPINION: West Susitna Access Road is a bad deal for Alaskans

fishing trip juneau alaska

The west end of Ayrshire Road, located about 30 miles southwest of Wasilla, photographed on Saturday, Feb. 5, 2022. (Emily Mesner / ADN)

When you think of Alaska and describe it to visiting friends and relatives from outside, how do you do that? Most of us describe it as a mostly roadless land of unbelievable natural beauty. A land of fantastic fishing, hunting, and other recreational opportunities. A beautiful undeveloped wilderness to explore by boat or small plane for a fishing, hunting, or skiing trip. The closest area to Southcentral where we may enjoy these activities is about to change forever if Gov. Mike Dunleavy’s plan to put a bridge over the Big Susitna River is allowed to proceed. Once the bridge is completed, an access road will be built for a huge, foreign-owned, open pit gold mine, along with a proposed coal mine.

I would like to share what I’ve experienced in the five short decades that I’ve been in Alaska with the following two examples. First, there was an area of good moose hunting south of Fairbanks where residents would go to harvest their winter moose in the 1960s and 1970s. Through a lottery, the state sold thousands of acres of that land that became the Delta Barley Project. You can no longer hunt, or trap, or snowmachine there. Not without asking permission, as it is now all private land. No trespassing. A second example is an area where friends and I used to hunt, west of Goose Bay. Through another lottery, the state sold thousands of acres of that land, which eventually became the MacKenzie Dairy Farm Project. Again, thousands of acres of once-public, now private land. Let us not forget the failures of both the Delta and MacKenzie Projects for their original agricultural purposes. Part of the plan for the West Susitna Access Road includes 65,000 acres of agricultural land. That is more than 100 square miles of Alaska’s wild lands put under plow, no different than Ohio or Iowa — and again, don’t forget, private land.

Most everyone knows that tourism is second after oil for private-sector jobs and a major income generator for our entire state. A bridge and road will not only let an open-pit mine be established and pollute two major salmon tributaries, it will also have a negative effect on current jobs and economies in this area. These jobs and economies are not just for the next 20 years. They do not destroy the natural beauty of the area, nor do they pollute the watersheds with mine runoff. Many businesses, like Rainy Pass Lodge, which is the longest operating hunting and recreational lodge in the entire state of Alaska, will suffer loss of business along with the many current long-term jobs these entities support. This area is by far the closest and most reasonably priced destination to take your family out to enjoy a wilderness trip. That opportunity will be a thing of the past for this entire area as soon as the road is pushed through and a large portion of that land is put into private status. This area will be no different than the areas I mentioned above where I used to hunt, trap and snowmachine. We need to ask ourselves: What is wrong with fishing at Jim Creek, or Sunshine Creek, or hunting moose in the Big Lake area? We all know the answer. They are too crowded because all have easy access by road. Another road, another bridge, and another road is not the answer.

I was as upset, as were many others in the state, when Congress passed the Alaska National Interest Lands Claim Act and locked up more than 100 million acres of federal public land. A lot of it was now off limits to gold mining, hunting and other recreational activities that myself and fellow Alaskans had been enjoying for many years. Now as I look at what is being locked up in developed, private lands, my perspective on what happened in 1980 has changed. What we referred to as D2, now almost half a century later, is looking like a positive action for Alaska and Alaskans. Those lands will at least be kept from being crisscrossed by roads and open-pit mines and transferred into private hands.

Most people either don’t see us becoming the same as most western states, private land surrounding pockets of crowed public land, or don’t care because it isn’t going to affect them. It will affect our grandchildren. We as Alaskans need to ask ourselves: What kind of state do we want Alaska to become? It is changing fast, and I’m worried it’s going in the opposite direction that is the reason so many of us chose to live here in the first place. Don’t be mistaken. Soon, no matter how far you go, there will be a road to a Russian River or a Jim Creek, just with a different name.

I am going to finish with a quote taken from an article written by Steve Meyer in the Daily News, dated Nov. 27, 2022. “Public land is the salvation and the opportunity for folks who aren’t wealthy, who simply want the experience of enjoying country that remains essentially untouched by commerce.”

Chris Wesolowski has property and has recreated in the West Susitna area since the 1970s.

Why the journey is the destination when it comes to Alaska cruises

fishing trip juneau alaska

They say getting there is half the fun. Usually, I disagree. When I travel, I want to get to where I’m going as quickly as possible to make the most of my time there. However, sailing Celebrity Edge on its maiden Alaska voyage from Seattle, I was all about the journey.

Staring up at the snow-capped mountains through the ship’s floor-to-ceiling windows and watching for wildlife in the icy waters below, I was mesmerized by the famed Last Frontier. And I realized that on an Alaska cruise , the journey is a destination.

Here’s why and what travelers should know about cruising Alaska.

Why is Alaska a popular cruise destination?

Alaska is a bucket-list destination for many people. Some may wait their whole lives for the trip. While Alaska Airlines and other carriers fly throughout America’s largest state , it isn’t as easy to navigate as the Lower 48.

Cruises allow travelers to visit multiple destinations without taking separate flights, renting a car or moving from hotel to hotel. My Edge itinerary included stops in Ketchikan, which is surrounded by the lush Tongass National Forest ; the state capital of Juneau, which is only accessible by air or sea; and Skagway, home of Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park . The ship also carefully navigated the stunning Endicott Arm fjord toward Dawes Glacier, a highlight of the trip.

The easy trip can also be more accessible for people with mobility issues and other disabilities. Like other cruise lines, Celebrity has a team dedicated to accessible cruising . Numerous guests on board my sailing used walkers, canes or wheelchairs. Plus, it’s just nice to be able to take in the dramatic coastlines from the comfort of a cozy cabin or lounge when it’s chilly outside.

Are cruises to Alaska worth it?

They can be. At last check, the lowest price on a seven-night Celebrity Edge Alaska Dawes Glacier sailing, roundtrip from Seattle, for the remainder of this summer is listed at $778 per person on the cruise line’s website, based on double occupancy in an inside stateroom. That does not include travel to or from Seattle nor any taxes or fees, which can balloon the bottom line on any cruise. Nor does it include promotional discounts, which are pretty much always available. After taxes and fees, that works to about $2,212 for two people or $1,106 per person.

The cheapest seven-night Southbound Glacier sailing on the Edge’s sister ship, Celebrity Summit , is much less at $249 per person, based on double occupancy in an inside stateroom. It’s worth noting the Southbound voyage goes from Seward, Alaska, to Vancouver, British Columbia, not a round trip. Also the Summit is not an Edge-class ship , The Celebrity Edge is the first Edge class ship to sail Alaska; it was also the first ship in Celebrity’s most recent series, which also includes the new Celebrity Ascent . Edge-class ships were designed to bring guests closer than ever to their destinations, with their signature Magic Carpet cantilevered platform that extends beyond the ship’s edge and other features that bring the outside in. After taxes and fees, the Summit sailing adds up to about $1,231 for two people or about $615 a person.

Both are cheaper than flying between cities and staying at hotels for a week in Alaska, but they're also cheaper than other popular vacations. For example, seven nights at Disney’s All-Star Sports Resort , a value resort at Walt Disney World , costs $955 for the room alone, including taxes and a summer promo deal. Adding seven days of park tickets, without park hopping, and the total becomes $2,195 for two people or about $1,098 per person, excluding food.

Meanwhile, cruises include all onboard meals – except optional specialty dining and alcohol. There are also a boatload of included activities, like nature talks, tai chi classes, guided arts and crafts, trivia, games and childcare. There’s live music available through the day and nightly stage shows. I sampled a little bit of everything, but for me, the best part of the ship was the views.

Inside Ascent: 3 takeaways from Celebrity Cruises' new ship

Do you see wildlife on an Alaskan cruise?

Yes. I saw whale spouts three times from the ship, though the whales didn’t breach above water. I also saw a handful of harbor seals and a dozen eagles from the ship and from shore. Bald eagles are so common in Alaska that a tour bus driver jokingly called them bald seagulls. There are 30,000 bald eagles in the state, according to the Alaska Department of Fish & Game.

I kept an eye out for bears on an excursion to Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau, which is managed by the U.S. Forest Service. I didn’t see any walking along the paved, wheelchair-accessible Nugget Falls Trail, but I did spot all sorts of spring buds and the most beautiful moss.

The ship’s onboard naturalist gave us a heads-up on what to look for and taught us about various species in presentations in the ship’s theater. She also broadcasted live on the ship’s TV channel and inside speakers while traveling through the Endicott Arm. However, her voice wasn’t carried on outside speakers to avoid potentially disturbing wildlife.

What is the best month to go on a cruise to Alaska?

The Alaska cruise season runs from late April to early October, though dates vary by cruise line. Guests who sail early or late in the season may find lower rates than during the height of the summer, but they may miss out on warmer weather.

It was in the 40s to 50s most days of my May sailing, and it rained on our Juneau day. The onboard naturalist warned that there is no bad weather in Alaska, only poor clothing choices.

How much should I budget for an Alaskan cruise?

You should pad your budget with several hundred extra dollars for excursions and dining off-ship. Both can be pricey but enriching. My Mendenhall Glacier excursion was just under $130, including transportation and an off-site Gold Creek Salmon Bake , with all-you-can-eat fresh salmon cooked over a wood-burning fire.  I’ve never had better fried fish than the local halibut at The Alaska Fish House in Ketchikan, and I will be dreaming of the sweet, plump red king crab at Tracy’s King Crab Shack in Juneau for years to come.  If you want freshly caught Alaska seafood, you’ll want to get it at port.

You may be able to spot whales from the cruise ship, but if you really want to go whale watching, salmon fishing, dog sledding, or get up close to glaciers, that’s generally going to require an excursion. Excursions offered through cruise lines tend to cost more than those booked independently, but booking through the cruise line can streamline payment and ensure that the ship won’t leave without you if the excursion runs late.

One port you can enjoy on the cheap is Skagway. You can explore several exhibits and historic buildings on your own, as part of Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. However many visitors splurge on a scenic train ride on the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway up to the Canadian border and back.

Is it worth getting a balcony on a cruise?

Yes and no. The views throughout Alaska are breathtaking, and being able to enjoy them from your cabin any time of day feels luxurious. I loved waking up to mountains, thick with trees, outside my window and scanning the waters for marinelife before bed.

Just over 80% of Celebrity Edge’s staterooms have a balcony. I had an Infinite Veranda , which is unique to Edge-class ships. Rather than a traditional balcony with a sliding glass door, Infinite Verandas incorporate what would be exterior balcony space into the interior of the cabin and have a window that slides halfway down the exterior wall with the push of a button. I loved how much bigger it made the cabin feel and appreciated the extra climate-controlled living space. It was still chilly during my early season sailing, so I rarely put the window down and think I would have enjoyed a non-balcony, oceanview room just as much.

Of course, if you book an inside cabin, you can still enjoy the scenery from public areas of any ship. The Celebrity Edge brings the outside in with tons of windows, including in the buffet restaurant, Oceanview Cafe, where I spotted my first whale spout. In the back of the ship, there’s a relaxing mixed-use space called Eden with three stories of windows that I found myself drawn to daily. The solarium, with its tall windows and rows of lounge chairs, also offered expansive views.

Do I need a passport for an Alaskan cruise?

Maybe. For a closed-loop cruise that starts and ends in the same U.S. port, like the one I was on, all you need is proof of citizenship.

“According to U.S. Customs & Border Protection, this includes an Enhanced Driver’s License, which is a state-issued driver’s license that provides proof of identity and U.S. citizenship; a government-issued birth certificate (issued by the Vital Records Department in the state where the person was born) or passport; and if 16 or older, a government-issued driver’s license or picture ID denoting photo, name, and date of birth,” according to Celebrity.

Of course, not all Alaska cruises are closed-loop cruises. Some start or end in Vancouver, Canada. There are also cruises on several smaller U.S.-flagged cruise lines like Alaska Dream Cruises and Uncruise Adventures , which may not require passports depending on the itinerary.

Can you see the Northern Lights on an Alaska cruise?

It’s possible, but because daylight hours are so long during the summer in Alaska, the best chance to see them would be on a cruise late in the season.

I woke up in the middle of the night a few times to look for Northern Light. I didn’t see any, but I heard passengers on a previous sailing spotted them. Then again, so did people all across the country during the solar storm earlier this month.
