20 Best European Cities to Visit in the Winter, According to Travel Experts

Holiday markets and twinkling lights are calling you to these European destinations.

The draw to Europe in the summer may be strong, but winter tends to be even better — particularly for travelers who don’t fare well in the heat or in large crowds. Apart from the peak holiday season, most cities in Europe tend to free up from tourists during the winter. “For me, traveling around Europe in the off-season, and specifically during winter, opens a whole new world of travel,” says Kayla Zeigler, owner of Destination Europe, LLC . “Way less crowds, lower hotel pricing, cooler weather… and more space to roam and take in all that Europe has to offer.”

Before embarking on your trip, however, there are a few things to be aware of. “Days get shorter during the winter season, which means less daylight for sightseeing. I recommend planning your activities accordingly and being mindful of opening and closing times for attractions and shops,” says Lydia Forte, group director of food and beverage at Rocco Forte Hotels . Weather-wise, your packing list and itinerary will depend on where you’re going. The temperatures in Nordic and Central European cities can reach well below freezing — allowing for picturesque snowy scenes and excellent skiing —  while Southern Europe (which includes Croatia, Italy, Portugal, and Malta) promises more sunshine and moderate temperatures.

Meet the Expert

  • Kayla Zeigler owns Destination Europe, a travel agency that specializes in European vacations.
  • Lydia Forte is the group director of food and beverage at Rocco Forte Hotels, a luxury hotel brand with over a dozen properties across Europe.
  • Susan Boehnstedt is president of Critics Choice Vacations, an affiliate of Montecito Village Travel, a Virtuoso agency.
  • Tesa Totengco is the founder of Travels with Tesa and a member of Travel + Leisure ’s Travel Advisory Board.

According to Susan Boehnstedt, president of Critics Choice Vacations , you’ll want to start thinking about your trip as soon as possible. “Weather and delays are always possible… [so] additional planning, patience, and perseverance may be required.” That said, the first step in the process is picking out where you want to go — whether you’re interested in Edinburgh’s Christmas markets, Vienna’s opulent balls, or pleasant walks along Las Ramblas in Barcelona.

Read on to discover 20 of the best European cities to visit in the winter, according to travel experts.

Nuremberg, Germany

Boehnstedt recommends heading to Nuremberg for the “amazing Christmas markets, musical festivals, and overall festive spirit and atmosphere in the charm of Bavaria.” It will be cold, so travelers should bundle up to explore the charming city — a glass of mulled wine while browsing the famed Christkindlesmarkt, one of Germany’s oldest fairs, helps, too.

Istanbul, Turkey

Fajrul Islam/Getty Images

“Istanbul's unique blend of history, culture, and stunning architecture is enchanting year-round. In winter, you can explore iconic landmarks like the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque with fewer crowds,” says Tesa Totengco , founder of Travels with Tesa .

London, England

Karl Hendon/Getty Images

“As Christmas approaches, London transforms into a winter wonderland, adorned with captivating city lights, beautifully decorated shops, and many excellent dining choices,” says Forte. Enjoy an afternoon walking through the brightly lit Kew Gardens, or tuck into a Sunday roast at one of the nearby pubs after a long walk through Hampstead Heath. “The weather, while cold, usually is snow-free, so it makes it easier to get about,” adds Boehnstedt.

Edinburgh, Scotland

georgeclerk/Getty Images

“If you like moody skies and cozy corners in coffee shops, Edinburgh is the place to visit during the winter months,” says Zeigler. Expect cold weather and shorter days — the sun sets before 4 p.m. in December — but there’s still plenty to enjoy in the Scottish capital. “Keep warm with a wee dram, cozied up next to a roaring fire in any of Edinburgh’s iconic luxury hotels ,” says Zeigler.

Valletta, Malta

Snow-capped mountains and excursions requiring multiple layers aren’t for everyone. Thankfully, Europe has other options — one of which is Valletta, Malta. “Malta boasts a mild Mediterranean climate, even in winter. You can explore [Valletta’s] rich history, architecture, and vibrant culture without the scorching summer heat,” says Totengco.

Bath, England

andreviegas/Getty Images

A winter’s day in Bath is best spent browsing its various quaint bookstores, indulging in afternoon tea, soaking in the famed waters of the Thermae Bath Spa, and popping into one of the city’s oldest pubs, Saracens Head or The Star Inn. For a more festive touch, add ice skating at Royal Victoria Park and picking up gifts at the Bath Christmas Market to your day’s activities.

Paris, France

encrier/Getty Images

It’s true what they say: There’s never a bad time to visit Paris. As fall transitions into the colder months, the City of Light becomes extra cozy and even more romantic. “The museums are empty and are amazing places to have to yourself on a rainy or chilly day. Paris’ famous street cafés are still functioning in winter… with heat lamps and warm furry blankets — perfect for people watching and sipping a glass of wine (or a hot chocolate),” says Zeigler. “And, of course, the lower hotel prices can’t be beat this time of year.”

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Given its status as a UNESCO World Heritage City, it’s no surprise that Dubrovnik is popular with tourists, especially in the summer. In the winter, though, you won’t have to fight for the best views of the iconic sights — the City Walls, the Cable Car, and the Dubrovnik Cathedral. Your trip may also fall during the Dubrovnik Winter Festival , featuring concerts, festive lights, and markets.

Rovaniemi, Finland

Winter is the ideal time to visit the “official hometown of Santa Claus.” “Rovaniemi, the capital of Finnish Lapland , is known for its Santa Claus Village, where one can meet Santa Claus himself. Here, you can also enjoy activities like reindeer safaris, dog sledding, and witnessing the northern lights from your unique igloo accommodation ,” says Totengco.

Málaga, Spain

MEDITERRANEAN/Getty Images

“Located on the Costa del Sol, Málaga offers a pleasant climate where you can still enjoy outdoor activities, explore historic sites like the Alcazaba, [visit the] neighboring towns of Ronda and Seville, and enjoy delicious Spanish cuisine in a relaxed atmosphere,” says Totengco. Temperatures typically range from the mid-50s to low 70s, and there the sun provides a much-needed dose of vitamin D.

Reykjavík, Iceland

Merten Snijders/Getty Images

You’ll only have a few hours of daylight in Reykjavík this time of year, but winter is also your best chance to see the northern lights in Iceland. Consider taking a boat tour out of Reykjavík Old Harbor, or use the city as your base camp before heading off on a longer excursion. To shake the cold, take a dip in the nearby Sky Lagoon, where the waters are typically around 100 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit.

Rome, Italy

Rome’s peak season comes to a close in November, so travelers have December through March to enjoy the capital city’s quieter side. Before or after a day of shopping and sightseeing, Forte recommends grabbing pizza from Emma or getting a table at Roscioli for lunch. We think pasta and pizza sound like the perfect way to warm up from a chilly walk.

Lucerne, Switzerland

LuismiX/Getty Images

As temperatures fall below freezing, the cities and towns in the Swiss Alps — like Lucerne — beckon to winter sports enthusiasts, as well as those who want an extra large helping of alpine charm. “Snow sports in the mountains may likely be very possible. Plan a day tour on one of the Swiss scenic trains across the winter wonderland,” says Boehnstedt. Lucerne is also a great option for international travelers, as it’s just a quick 40-minute train ride from Zurich.

Lisbon, Portugal

Gautier Houba/Travel + Leisure

Lisbon’s sunshine is part of its appeal, even in the winter. Depending on the day, you may only need a light or medium-weight jacket as you walk up and down the many hills, through the cobbled streets, and by the tiled buildings of the Alfama district. Compared to summer, this time of year is significantly more pleasant for on-foot exploration — but don’t forget to hop on a yellow tram at least once or twice.

Barcelona, Spain

JackF/Getty Images

According to Zeigler, in Barcelona , “one of Europe’s largest and busiest cruise port cities,”  winter means getting a break from the crowds created by cruises. “Imagine walking directly into the Sagrada Familia with no long line! Strolling and exploring are more pleasant; restaurants are less crowded,” she says. Outdoor swimming may be a no-go, but travelers can still bask in the rays along the oceanfront promenade.

Venice, Italy

Daniel Gorostieta/Travel + Leisure

“On a sunny winter day, Venice is pure magic! With the city's new floodgates almost fully working now, hardly any high water (Aqua Alta) affects Venice anymore,” says Zeigler. And, as with most European cities in the off-season, it will be easier to navigate your way through the compact city without the staggering number of summer travelers. “Winter is the perfect time to visit the big sites, as you can get tickets and don’t have to do the ridiculous queues,” says Forte. Check off all the classics, including the Piazza San Marco, the Bridge of Sighs, Doge's Palace, and Forte’s personal favorite, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection.

Amsterdam, Netherlands

XXX/Getty Images

Amsterdam might not be the first European destination you think of when planning winter travel, but it has its own brand of magic this time of year.  “When it stays cold enough, long enough, the many canals of Amsterdam become a giant outdoor skating rink,” says Zeigler. This event is rare — and becoming increasingly so — but there are other sides of Amsterdam to explore as well. Bring a book or a good friend to one of the city’s many coffee shops and pubs, complete with “winter lights and cozy nooks,” she adds.

Nice, France

Utenzilije/Getty Images

You won’t be frequenting Nice’s beach clubs this time of year, but there’s still beauty to be found in the waterfront city; you just have to know where to look. Get your steps in by walking up Castle Hill, a feat rewarded with an incredible view, or spend a day meandering through the narrow streets of Old Town. Schedule permitting, take a day trip to Monaco, or explore one of the many small towns in the French Riviera .

Florence, Italy

Those visiting Florence in the winter might not see any snow, but they’ll have the gift of lower hotel prices, fewer fellow travelers, and the option to go truffle hunting. “This time of year is when truffles are in season,” says Forte, who shares that guests of Hotel Savoy — named one of the best hotels in Florence by T+L readers — can book a truffle excursion via a vintage car. “The experience is especially extraordinary as guests can enjoy stunning views of the Ponte Vecchio, Piazzale Michelangelo, and San Miniato along their drive before heading into the Tuscan hills on their search for truffles,” she explains.

Vienna, Austria

Creativemarc/Getty Images

Get out your dancing shoes and black-tie attire: Winter is ball season in Vienna. Viennese balls are open to the public, so travelers just have to find one that aligns with their trip and buy tickets — and don’t worry, there are quite a few to choose from. Not sure where to start? Bookmark the Vienna Philharmonic Ball in January, or the Vienna State Opera Ball in February.

The 15 Best Places to Visit in Europe in December

1. reykjavik, iceland .

Places to Visit in Europe in December: Reykjavik, Iceland

Iceland is a land of extremes, and in winter, the days are incredibly short, the weather is freezing cold, and the landscapes are frozen solid. But don’t let that put you off. In fact, embrace the Icelandic extremes in December, and you’ll have an incredible time exploring this island nation at the “wrong” time of year.

We recommend basing yourself in Reykjavik , where the city very much continues to function, even with temperatures regularly dropping below freezing and no more than five hours of daylight on the longest day of the month. You’ll see a side of Iceland that’s far removed from those long summer days, which are by now a distant memory.

Things to do in Europe in December: Reykjavik, Iceland

December is the best time of year to see the Northern Lights, and you can join a tour out into the icy tundra around the Icelandic capital in search of this natural phenomenon. Icelanders are equipped with heavy-duty vehicles to beat the snow, and you can tour through the Golden Circle around Reykjavik, seeing the steaming geysers bursting from the ground and being awed by the frozen waters of Gullfoss.

And if the cold starts to beat you, there’s nothing better than a dip in thermal waters. Reykjavik’s most famous spa is the Blue Lagoon , and while it’s certainly spectacular, it’s also very touristy. For a fraction of the price, you can visit the local public pools in Reykjavik, which are also all heated by geothermal energy.

2. Nuremberg, Germany

Places to Visit in Europe in December: Nuremberg, Germany

Nuremberg is one of the most classic places to visit in Europe in December, and although its Christmas market is one of the busiest in Europe, it’s easily one of our favorite festive experiences.

Nuremberg is home to gorgeous medieval architecture, and throughout the Advent Season (from late November until Christmas Eve), the Old Town plays host to the centuries-old Christkindlesmarkt . Wooden stalls, carol singers, Christmas lights, and copious quantities of Gluhwein can be found in the Hauptmarkt, and the surrounding streets and squares, as Nurembergers embrace the festive spirit with due aplomb.

Europe in December: Nuremberg, Germany

You’ll be visiting one of the oldest Christmas markets in the world, with a recorded history dating back to at least the 17th century, and possibly even earlier. There are some unusual traditions at the Christkindlesmarkt, the name of which translates into English as the “Christ Child Market.”

Local women compete in the run-up to Advent to be selected as the Christ Child, a role which sees them dressed as a white angel in the market’s opening ceremony before making various other appearances throughout Advent.

Once the market is opened, you can gorge on local dishes like the famous Nurnberger Rostbratwurst (grilled sausages) and lebkuchen (a type of local gingerbread) as you soak up the Christmas festivities in Germany.

3. Edinburgh, United Kingdom

Things to do in Europe in December: Edinburgh, United Kingdom

One of the best places to travel in Europe in December is Edinburgh , a magnificent city that’s gearing up for its Christmas and New Year extravaganzas.

The Scottish weather is notoriously bleak, and you’ll have to endure low temperatures and regular downpours as you explore the city’s best sights. Luckily, there’s always a cozy pub for you to jump into (try The World’s End ), while Edinburgh’s traditional food is very much geared up for winter (try the haggis, of course).

Europe in December: Edinburgh, United Kingdom

Edinburgh has a wealth of indoor attractions to see. Edinburgh Castle ‘s ramparts might be windy, but the museums inside offer a fantastic insight into Scottish history. The National Museum of Scotland is an even deeper dive into the past, while Holyrood Palace and its stately rooms are an excellent place to learn more about the British Royal Family.

Then there’s the Scottish Parliament , the Museum of Edinburgh , and of course, who can miss out on a visit to The Scotch Whisky Experience ? Throughout December, Christmas markets pop up all over the city, including at the popular East Princes Street Gardens. Stay on for New Year’s and you can immerse yourself in Hogmanay, the traditional Scottish way to round off the old and see in the new.

4. Bruges, Belgium

Europe in December: Bruges, Belgium

Bruges is a fairytale European destination, and if you’re lucky with the winter weather, you may even get to see this Belgian city covered in layers of snow. In particularly cold winters, the city’s canals have even been known to freeze solid, adding to the wintry allure you’re searching for.

Throw tall Christmas trees, carol singers, and Advent light shows into the mix, and you’ve got yourself one of the best places to visit in Europe in December. Market Square in the center of Brugge is thrown over to traditional Christmas market stalls, and you can browse for gifts and souvenirs as you enjoy a warm mug of mulled wine.

Things to do in Europe in December: Bruges, Belgium

There’s a smaller market at Stevinplein, too, while a trip to the Minnewater ice rink has long been a favored Christmas excursion. Bruges is famed for its beers and frites, and in December, you’ll love snuggling up on a heated terrace or in front of a roaring fire as you sample the best brews in the city. For frites, head to the quirky Fritemuseum , where you can learn all about the history of this classic Belgian take on French fries.

5. Ljubljana, Slovenia

Europe in December: Ljubljana, Slovenia

Ljubljana , with its dragon bridges and turquoise river, is one of our favorite European cities, and December is a surprisingly fun time to visit. Although temperatures can drop below freezing, you’ll love the crisp winter air as you stroll along the tall river banks or take a cruise along the Ljubljanica River.

Ride the funicular to Ljubljana Castle , where you’ll have spectacular views over the red roofs of the city. If it’s raining, pop into the National Museum of Contemporary History or the Slovenian Ethnographic Museum, and if the rain holds off, then explore the street art and galleries of the Metelkova District, a former military district that’s been transformed into a quirky base for artists, activists, and musicians.

Places to Visit in Europe in December: Ljubljana, Slovenia

Ljubljana throws itself wholeheartedly into the Christmas spirit, and you can visit the festive markets at Preseren Square, where you can try seasonal Slovenian treats like potica (a sweet, festive bread) while warming up with a hot mug of mulled wine. Slovenian cuisine is hearty and wholesome, too, and you’ll love digging into a big bowl of jota (a stew) or a steaming plate of Štruklji (dumplings) in the cold evenings.

You can even take a day trip from Ljubljana to Lake Bled, which is just an hour’s drive north of the Slovenian capital. Hidden away in the Julian Alps, this alpine lake is glorious in the winter, when its mountain peaks are capped with snow.

6. Dresden, Germany

Europe in December: Dresden, Germany

Dresden is home to one of the best Christmas market experiences in Europe. This historic German town has hosted its Striezelmarkt since 1434, making this the oldest Christmas market in the world.

Back then, the Striezelmarkt was a simpler one-day market held at some point in the week leading up to Christmas. The market was named after the struzel that was sold here, a specific type of stollen cake that’s eaten in Dresden at Christmas time.

Places to Visit in Europe in December: Dresden, Germany

Today, the Striezelmarkt has expanded over nearly six centuries into a festive market that hosts upwards of 200 stalls in and around the Altmarkt, in Dresden’s old town, for the entire Advent period. It’s busy, it’s historic, it’s fun, and you can enjoy traditional struzel alongside a hot mug of Gluhwein!

7. Tromso, Norway

Places to Visit in Europe in December: Tromso, Norway

For a seriously unique December experience, why not catch a flight to the Arctic Circle? That might sound just a little crazy, but the winter season is one of the most impressive times to visit Tromso , Norway’s Arctic capital.

Located deep within the Arctic Circle, it’s a 2-hour flight from Oslo to Tromso. Oslo will seem positively tropical in comparison to Tromso, but you’ll quickly fall in love with the unusual way of life eked out this far north.

Europe in December: Tromso, Norway

Daylight is almost nonexistent this time of year, but you’ll come to appreciate the almost ephemeral glow that accompanies the sun’s ragged attempts to rise above the horizon. The city, home to some 65,000 people even in the winter, is surrounded by ice-free fjords, which are spectacular in December. Take a boat cruise in search of the Northern Lights (there’s no better time to see them!) and warm up later with a trip to the sauna.

Tromso is very much a winter sports playground in December, with ample opportunities for cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. You can also visit the local Sami people, many of whom still herd reindeer across the tundra. Join a Sami experience to learn about their distinct way of life, their language, and history while meeting the reindeer and enjoying Arctic activities like dogsledding.

8. Zagreb, Croatia

Places to Visit in Europe in December: Zagreb, Croatia

Zagreb , the understated Croatian capital, is one of the best places to travel in Europe in December. Zagreb might sit at the crossroads of Central and Southern Europe, but despite having a colorful history that’s been shaped by the Romans, Slavs, Habsburgs, and Yugoslavians, the city is almost always overlooked in the summer months.

Tourists prefer the beaches and islands of Croatia’s Adriatic coastline and ancient walled cities like Split and Dubrovnik. But in the winter, Zagreb really comes into its own, as the city’s squares are filled with festive markets and Christmas cheer (head to Ban Josipa Jelačića Square and King Tomislav Square).

Europe in December: Zagreb, Croatia

Have your fill of mulled wine and seasonal Croatian treats like fritule (a type of sugary donut), then escape the chill as you tour through Zagreb’s best museums. Start with the curious Museum of Broken Relationships , get nostalgic at the Zagreb ‘80s museum, and explore Yugoslavian art at the Croatian Museum of Naive Art .

9. Rovaniemi, Finland

Europe in December: Rovaniemi, Finland

Ask the Finns, and without hesitation, they’ll tell you that, yes, Santa Claus does exist. And how can they be so sure? Well, Finnish people know that Santa Claus lives in Lapland, where there’s an entire city dedicated to Christmas.

With savvy marketing, Finnish Lapland cornered the Christmas tourist market when they built the Santa Claus Village in 1985. Located just outside of Rovaniemi, a remote city in northern Finland , you can meet Santa, meet the reindeer, and cross the Arctic Circle, which runs through the center of the village.

Things to do in Europe in December: Rovaniemi, Finland

It’s the perfect place to find that Christmas cheer, and given how close you are to the Arctic Circle, it’s a guaranteed white December. Rovaniemi has become a trendy winter break destination in recent years, and in addition to visiting Santa Claus Village, you can meet reindeer herders, learn about the Sami way of life, ride snowmobiles, and learn how to dog sled, too!

10. Budapest, Hungary

Europe in December: Budapest, Hungary

Budapest is a fantastic city to visit no matter the season, but we particularly enjoy the Hungarian capital in December.

We love the festive hubbub in the city’s Christmas markets, where huge portions of hot goulash are served in enormous, hollowed-out bread bowls. There’s pork knuckle, kolbasz sausages, and chimney cakes, while the mulled wine and palinka (a local type of schnapps) are free-flowing in the winter air.

Places to Visit in Europe in December: Budapest, Hungary

Wrap up warm and you can spend your getaway bouncing from one market to the next. Start in Vorosmarty Square, where you can find the biggest market in Budapest, stroll along to St. Stephen’s Basilica, where carol singers liven the streets, and then cross the Danube to Buda, where traditional Hungarian gifts are sold on the hill from wooden market stalls.

Budapest can get cold in December, with temperatures frequently dropping to lows of 0°C. That makes the city’s famous thermal baths all the more welcome, and you’ll love dipping into the warm waters of the Gellert Thermal Bath or enjoying the delightful contrast of the heated outdoor pools at the Széchenyi Baths , which are the largest in Budapest.

11. Canary Islands, Spain

Places to Visit in Europe in December: Canary Islands, Spain

So far, we’ve focused on the classic wintery experiences you can enjoy in Europe, but we know that not everyone enjoys the cold. In fact, some people just want to escape the colder climes of northern Europe and find themselves a little winter sun in December.

If that’s you, then you’ll want to book yourself a flight to the Canary Islands . Although they’re part of Spain, the Canary Islands are located a good two-hour flight south of Madrid, and they’re closer to Africa than they are to mainland Europe. The islands – of which there are eight, including Gran Canaria , Tenerife , and La Gomera – are very much Spanish in character, having been ruled by Spain since the 15th century.

Europe in December: Canary Islands, Spain

The Canary Islands are positively warm in December, with temperatures reaching highs of 21°C or 70°F (compare that to Iceland, Norway, or Finland, where temperatures rarely rise above freezing!). You can score great deals on flights and resorts, which are much quieter in the low season, and you might even find it warm enough to take a dip in the sea.

12. Zermatt, Switzerland

Places to Visit in Europe in December: Zermatt, Switzerland

If you love snowcapped mountains and winter scenes, Zermatt is one of the coolest places to visit in Europe in December. This is one of Switzerland ‘s most iconic mountain getaways, and the small town of some 6,000 people sits at an altitude of 1,620 meters (5,315 feet) above sea level.

This means that in December, you can expect Zermatt to already have a smattering of snow. The town sits in the shadow of the famed Matterhorn, a distinctive mountain peak that rises to a height of 4,478 meters (14,692 feet).

Europe in December: Zermatt, Switzerland

Although the Matterhorn is Switzerland’s most recognizable mountain, Zermatt is, in fact, surrounded by other, higher mountains, too, including Monte Rosa, which at 4,634 meters (15,203 feet) is the highest mountain in the country.

You can learn about the history of Zermatt and its association with mountaineering at the Matterhorn Museum before taking the cable car to Klein Matterhorn, which sits at an altitude of 3,883 meters (12,740 feet). In December, the ski season might just be starting, in which case you can rent a chalet and hit the slopes of the Swiss Alps.

Zermatt really is an adventure playground, and you can try your hand at everything from mountaineering to tobogganing. The town is also located at the end of the Glacier Express, one of the most spectacular mountain train rides in Europe.

13. Vienna, Austria

Places to Visit in Europe in December: Vienna, Austria

Vienna is a dream in winter, which is why the Austrian capital is one of the best places to go in Europe in December.

Vienna’s festive season is already in full swing, as the city’s Christmas markets will already have opened to great fanfare at the end of November. The Advent Season in Austria is long but eventful, and the build-up to Christmas sees Vienna’s public squares packed out daily with market stalls and carol singers.

Europe in December: Vienna, Austria

Head to the Rathausplatz, Vienna’s main square, and you can indulge in Gluhwein in front of the city’s historic town hall. Ice skating is a particularly popular winter pastime in Vienna, and the Rathausplatz is also home to one of the best outdoor ice rinks during the Christmas season.

Special Advent concerts are held within St. Stephen’s Cathedral, where you’ll enjoy not only a celebration of all things Christmas but a celebration of Europe’s classical composers, including the likes of Mozart and Bach.

And of course, there are countless historical and cultural attractions you can also visit in Vienna in December. The Schoenbrunn Palace hosts its own festivities, for example, while Belvedere Palace , the Sigmund Freud Museum , and the Leopold Museum are must-visits. As you explore Vienna, you might even run into a Krampus, the terrifying anti-Santa from European folklore that runs riot during Advent!

14. Copenhagen, Denmark

Europe in December: Copenhagen, Denmark

Denmark ‘s cozy hygge concept comes into its own in the long winter months, and once you’ve embraced the lifestyle, you’ll quickly see why this is one of the best places to go in Europe in December.

In Copenhagen , it’s not only the festive season, but the “hygge season,” as Danes wrap themselves up in woolen jumpers, hats, scarves, and socks before warming up next to a roaring fire.

Places to Visit in Europe in December: Copenhagen, Denmark

Wrap up warm yourself and you can brave the chill temperatures to explore the Danish capital’s Christmas markets, while Tivoli World is transformed into a veritable winter wonderland in December. The canals of Nyhavn occasionally freeze over, while ice skating rinks, winter saunas, and festive food markets are plentiful all over Copenhagen.

15. Strasbourg, France

Things to do in Europe in December: Strasbourg, France

One of our top places to visit in Europe in December is Strasbourg , a French city by the German border that’s home to the European Parliament.

But while you can take a tour through the parliament buildings and learn all about Strasbourg’s cross-border history (the city changed hands between France and Germany countless times in centuries past), in December, you’re really here for the Christmas market.

Places to Visit in Europe in December: Strasbourg, France

Strasbourg’s Germanic influences (the city sits on the banks of the River Rhine, which is the border with Germany) ensure that the Christmas market tradition is strong here. The city has hosted a market since 1570, and it’s now one of the oldest in France, if not one of the oldest in all of Europe.

Different markets sprawl across the city these days, but the most traditional are focused around Cathedral Square, where you’ll find countless wooden stalls offering everything from mulled wine to Christmas tree decorations.

There you have it! The 15 best places to visit in Europe in December. What’s your favorite European destination to visit in December?

Europe weather in December

Prague is one of the beautiful capital cities in Europe

While some people instantly assume that the temperatures are the same across Europe in December, this is definitely not true.

The weather of Europe in December is very much varied with countries in Scandinavia experiencing brutal snowy winters with temperatures dropping to below zero sometimes while some countries especially those on the Mediterranean experience some sun and temperatures can go as high as 18°C (64°F).

So it really depends on the country itself. There are some countries in Europe you can visit to experience a snowy winter but there are some you can visit and enjoy some sun.

So in this article, I will be focusing on some of the warmest places in Europe in December. Read on and you might just find your perfect winter sun destination.

warmest places in Europe in December

In no particular order, here are the 23 warm places in Europe in December!

1. Madeira, Portugal

Madeira is one of the warm places in Europe in December

When it comes to choosing a warm place in Europe in December, the island of Madeira is worth taking into consideration. The island is blessed with pristine blue seawaters, beautiful sand beaches, and green cliffs.

The climate is temperate all year long, creating the illusion of a never-ending spring. Even in December, temperatures vary between 20°C (68°F) and 15°C (59°F) at its lowest.

Seawater temperature during wintertime is approximately 20°C (68°F), offering the rare opportunity for a December swim for the more daring.

Madeira is also the perfect choice for those who love a more adventurous vacation since there is plenty of opportunity for hiking and trekking in the region.

For a hike to remember, take a walk through the levadas footpaths (the local mountain trails) and enjoy some of the most incredible views in the world, surrounded by uncontaminated wilderness.

The best part is that you don’t need to worry about your hiking expertise too much. There are plenty of incredibly beautiful paths of all kinds of levels of difficulty, and fortunately, the weather conditions on the island are year-round perfect for excursions.

If you are a foodie, then you’ll want to have a taste of the typical Mediterranean cuisine that Madeira has to offer.

On the island, you will have no problem finding fresh, earthy ingredients. Among the most loved local dishes, you may want to try the Tuna in molho de vilão sauce or the typical Espetada steak, accompanied by Bolo do caco bread.

2. Cordoba, Spain

Cordoba is one of the warmest places in Europe in December

The picturesque city of Cordoba is located in Andalusia, in southern Spain. If you love a city with plenty of art and history to offer, then you may want to book a ticket to Cordoba this winter.

The city was once the capital of the Muslim empire in Spain, and its unique architecture is characterized by a mix of Roman, Neoclassical, Gothic-Renaissance influences, as well as examples of Arab-Islamic art that will blow you away.

The climate in Cordoba, and the Andalusia region in general, is good all year round. In December, the average temperature is 10.5°C (51°F), with the highest registered being 15°C (59°F) and the lowest at 6°C (43°F).

Between typical breakfast sweets, tasty tapas, and elaborate dishes like the Flamenquín (jamón serrano wrapped in pork and eggs), you will find yourself missing the Andalusian cuisine once you go back home.

For those who love to cook, or just want to dive into another culture, try taking a cooking class! Let local experts guide you and learn how to prepare local Andalusian dishes on your own.

Also, many cooking classes include a shopping session at the most famous local farmer’s market, the Mercado La Corredera.

3. Costa Tropical, Spain

Costa Tropical is one of the warmer places in Europe in December

For those who are craving a break from the office and want to hit the beach, spending your winter holiday in Costa Tropical will be a great choice.

Costa Tropical is located in Andalucia, in particular in the Granada province, and is blessed with both splendid beaches and stunning scenery.

Even during wintertime, the weather in the Granada area is pleasant with mostly sunny days and a daily temperature that can vary from 18°C (64°F) to 11°C (52°F).

Costa Tropical is a destination for those who love spending their time at the beach, but this doesn’t mean just laying in the sun and taking the occasional bath. Water sports are a big thing in Costa Tropical!

If you are feeling adventurous, try taking a kayak tour in the Acantilados de Cerro Gordo-Maro Natural Park or rent a small boat without the need for a license and go snorkeling in Maro and Cañuelo.

4. Sardinia, Italy

Sardinia is one of the best places to go in Europe in December

The Italian island of Sardinia is a real-life paradise, and up until a few years ago, it was still not a super touristy destination.

However, due to the increasingly good reputation of its pristine seaside, beaches, and wild vegetation, the best time of the year to visit the island is Autumn or Winter.

The weather on the island is usually great all year round with registered warm temperatures even during the colder months, varying between 15°C (60°F ) and 13°C (55°F).

You can find beautiful seashores on all the perimeter of the island, and for this reason, it is recommended to take a tour of the entire region to fully enjoy everything that Sardinia has to offer.

Among the most famous beaches include the Arenas Biancas, the white beach of Golfo Aranci, Cala Brandinchi, Cala Mariolu, and Cala Goloritzè.

For a great picture, ask the locals to point you in the direction of the best “panorama”, the Italian term for “view”.

Yet, Sardina is not only famous for its nature but also for its art and history especially if you are passionate about exploring ancient locations and discovering pre-historical artifacts.

Make sure to pay a visit to the Osini Heels to have a guided tour of the Nuraghi , the unique ancient architecture from the Bronze Age.

5. Crete, Greece

Crete is one of the hottest places in Europe in December

Blue sea, picture-perfect beaches, ancient temples, and a plate of souvlaki . Of course, I am talking about the iconic Greek-island holiday.

Even in December, with temperatures going from 17°C ( 63°F) to 14°C (57°F), the stunning island of Crete can be your perfect winter sun destination in Europe . Whether you’re in Crete to drink wine at sunset or you are looking for more cultural activities, on the island, it is virtually impossible to get bored.

Once you feel you’ve spent enough time at the beach, the island still offers a lot since it was once the cradle of ancient Greek civilization!

Take an archeological guided tour of the fabled Knossos Palace, where the hero Theseus faced the minotaur in the labyrinth built by Daedalus.

Visit Heraklion, the main city on the island, or pay a visit to the Ideon Cave, the alleged birthplace of Zeus, father to all gods, for a truly mythological holiday.

6. Tenerife, Spain

Tenerife is the hottest place in Europe in December

“You look so beautiful in this light

Your silhouette over me

The way it brings out the blue in your eyes

Is the Tenerife Sea”

It doesn’t take an Ed Sheeran song to know that Tenerife is one of the most beautiful warm places in Europe in December.

Home to a sunny sky and warm weather, Tenerife is blessed with a never-ending spring-like temperature that, even in December, can vary between 20 – 23°C (68 -73 °F). In fact, it can easily pass as the warmest place in Europe in December.

For a perfect day on a greek white sand beach, you will get plenty of choices in Tenerife. Some of the most loved by the tourists are El Medano Beach, Playa de las Teresitas, Playa Torviscas, and Playa Torviscas.

However, if you are looking for a more secluded location away from the masses, then you may want to hit la Playa del Bollullo, located not far from Puerto de la Cruz.

For the foodies reading this guide , Tenerife has a lot to offer when it comes to fresh vegetables, fruit, and Pescado , or fish.

Try the typical churros de pescado (croquettes of fish), the Garbanzos soup or the Gofio escaldado (fish, garlic and red onions).

7. Fuerteventura, Canary Islands, Spain

Fuerteventura is one of the hottest places in Europe in December

Located in the Canary Islands in Spain, Fuerteventura is your typical subtropical island, with a twist!

The island may be located just 120 km (around 74 miles) from the African coastline, however, it is still a European destination , with all the advantages that this brings. For a European hot-and-sunny winter destination, Fuerteventura is as good as it gets, with weather being consistently good even in December and temperatures oscillating between 22°C(72°F) and 17°C ( 62°F). For a breathtaking view of the Ocean and unspoiled dune beach, visit the Parque Natural de Corralejo.

Among the most loved beaches on the Fuerteventura coastline, you won’t want to miss out on the Sotavento Beach or the postcard-like Playa de Cofete.

However, what makes Fuerteventura unique is its volcanic nature. Pay a visit to the Piscinas Naturales Aguas Verdes and enjoy the truly rare lava formations meeting the pristine emerald water.

8. Limassol, Cyprus

Limassol is one of the warmest places in Europe in December

When visiting the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, you must take a couple of days to stop in Limassol. TripAdvisor chose Limassol as the 3rd up-and-coming destination in the world, and not without a reason.

Especially if you are traveling in December, the city presents a great alternative option to other more expensive European destinations .

Even during the coldest months, the city’s weather is consistently fortunate, with the average day temperature being 18°C (64°F) and never going under 9°C(48°F).

For what concerns precipitations, you may expect around 9 out of 31 days of rain in December.

If you consider yourself a history enthusiast, Limassol offers some pretty good Indiana Jones opportunities, such as the UNESCO archeological park of Kourion, Limassol’s Castle, the Kolossi Castle, or the Sanctuary of Apollo.

The city also offers a rich Archaeological Museum for those who really can’t get enough of ancient Greek and Roman history and artifacts.

9. Nice, France

Nice is one of the warm places in Europe in December

Without leaving central Europe, you can still spend your winter holiday escaping the cold weather.

I am talking about the south of France , and in particular, Nice, whose winter temperature swings between 12°C (54°F) and 6°C (44°F).

With the greatest pride of the city being a huge wine and exquisite world-famous french cuisine haven, Nice is the perfect destination for food lovers.

Even while taking a stroll on the spectacular Promenade des Anglais , or through the picturesque narrow streets of the Vieille Ville (the Old City), you can still enjoy some of the most incredible street food.

Try the Socca , the emblematic street food of Nice, or a typical chickpea pancake that goes hand in hand with a glass of white wine.

With all that, Nice is not one of the most beautiful cities in France but also one of the warmer places in Europe in December.

Barcelona is one of the warmest places in Europe in December

For a winter sun getaway in Europe in December, Barcelona is definitely a good choice and a personal favorite.

With the weather being agreeable and pleasant all year round, visiting the capital of Catalonia in December has the great advantage of avoiding the huge crowd of tourists that flood the city during spring and summertime .

The city has plenty to offer from a naturalistic, architectural, artistic, and cultural point of view.

But most of all, the city itself is pure Art. From visiting the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia, taking a stroll through the Gothic Quarter, to paying a visit to the stunning Parco Guell, Barcelona has it all.

Moreover, the city also offers plenty of great partying opportunities, and that’s what makes it the perfect warm place in Europe in December for younger people.

And for an incredible view of the entire city, ride the Telefèric de Montjuïc!

11. Cagliari, Italy

Cagliari is one of the best European cities to visit in December

Southern Italy is by definition the home of a never-ending summer. In Autumn, when the rest of Europe is busy baking pumpkins and drinking hot tea, people in the Italian island of Sardinia are still going for a swim in the Mediterranean sea.

Maybe you’ll want to avoid taking a swim in December, but you will still be able to have a great time at the beach in Cagliari, where the winters are mild and temperatures are mostly steady around 15°C (60°F) and never lower than 9°C(48°F) in December.

Cagliari has also a lot to offer in terms of art and architecture. Among the most famous attractions, you should definitely visit the Elephant tower, the San Pancrazio tower, and the Cathedral of Santa Maria.

When visiting the upper part of town, once you’ve arrived at the famous Saint Remy Bastion, ask the locals for the “ ascensore ”, the Italian word for “elevator”, and enjoy an amazing view of the city from the Umberto I terrace.

12. Seville, Spain

Seville is one of the warmest places in Europe in December

For a warm holiday in Europe in December away from snow and chilling temperatures, book your ticket now to Seville!

The capital of Andalusia is truly a southern European gem, and even in December, you will be able to visit the city without worrying too much about the cold. In fact, the temperature is pretty stable around 17°C  (63°F) and 8 °C (47°F).

Seville is widely known for its monumental architecture that mixes European and Arabic influences.

However, what makes the city unique is its main park, the Parque de María Luisa, which cuts in half the city center and follows the path of the Guadalquivir river.

If you are a bird-watching enthusiast, this park will be a great opportunity to observe a great variety of different species, coexisting in this peculiar habitat within the city.

The capital of Andalusia is also a real European capital of fun and nightlife. So, if you are traveling with a younger crowd, you will be blown away by the incredible open-air discotheques and clubs.

13. Valletta, Malta

Malta - Capital, Valletta

When traveling to Valletta, feel free to leave home your scarf and beret (maybe not but you get the point)!

The weather on the island of Malta is super hot in the summer and warm and pleasant in the winter.

The average temperature in December is 15°C (60°F), which makes it the ideal location for those that want to spend their winter holiday in short sleeve t-shirts and tennis shoes.

The city is rich in history, culture, and monumental architecture, with a distinctive style that you won’t easily forget.

Valletta winds in a succession of ancient palaces, fortifications, bastions, gardens, and churches, all marked by the city’s unique baroque style.

If art is your thing, this could be your destination of choice. The whole city is an open-air museum and has been officially recognized as part of UNESCO.

14. Dubrovnik, Croatia

Dubrovnik is one of the warmer places in Europe in December

The city of Dubrovnik is characterized by a unique beauty that will stay with you long after you’ve come back home.

The city is an example of southern European historical architecture, faces the mediterranean sea, and is nothing less than spectacular.

The main attraction of the city is its iconic city walls. If you are somewhat of a TV show addict, then you will recognize them as the set of the worldwide popular TV show Game of Thrones.

If you love the show, then you won’t want to miss out on the opportunity of taking a guided GOT tour of the city.

Visit the Old town and at the same time re-live some of the most iconic scenes from the show such as the Slaying of King Robert’s bastards, Jaime’s return to King’s Landing, or the infamous Walk of shame.

15. Malaga, Spain

Malaga is the warmest place in Europe in December

We are back in one of the warm European countries in December, Spain but this time to recommend you to visit Malaga, one of the gems of the southern part of the country.

With its mild winter and temperatures in December fluctuating between 18°C (64°F) and 9°C (49°F), Malaga is a good pick for those that crave a bit of sunshine.

I recommend visiting Malaga if you are a real art addict. The city was the birthplace and home of the famous painter Picasso and some of its greatest works are showcased in the Picasso Museum, thanks to over 300 artworks being donated by the Picasso family to the city.

Moreover, walking around the city, you will find many opportunities to mingle with the locals and engage in local traditions, stop for tapas with a beer or a glass of wine.

16. Algarve, Portugal

Algarve is one of the best European cities to visit in December

For a cloudless holiday, the southern region of the Algarve in Portugal is a top pick.

The entire region is blessed with year-round good weather as well as pristine, uncontaminated sandy shores and breathtaking cliffs overlooking the ocean.

When traveling during wintertime, you will have the unique opportunity to admire the naturalistic beauty of the region, away from the crowd of tourists that can’t be avoided during the summer.

Among the best beaches in the region, I recommend spending a day at Praia da Marinha in Lagoa, one of the most scenic beaches in the world.

If you are a fan of long sandy shores, and you are looking to party or in general entertainment, then pay a visit to Praia da Rocha in Portimão.

And for the most incredible cliffs and a real-life postcard landscape, go to Praia da Dona Ana in Lagos.

17. Sicily, Italy

Sicily is one of the warmest places in Europe in December

Home of great food, incredible sea, and a rich history that dates back to the Greek Empire, Sicily is one of the warm places in Europe in December that everyone should add to their winter bucket list .

The island doesn’t know cold weather and has plenty to offer. Since it is the biggest island on the Mediterranean sea, and traveling by public transport isn’t always the most accessible option, I recommend renting a car and having the full Sicilian experience by checking out of the list each of the most famous locations in the region.

First of all, I recommend visiting the capital of the region, Palermo. Then Syracuse and Agrigento, where you can find one of the greatest ancient Greek archeological sites in the world. And for the perfect beach day, take a ferry to the Egadi Islands.

For the foodies reading this guide, I can guarantee you will find your heaven in Sicily. The perfect day? It starts with the typical breakfast, granita, and brioche.

Then, for lunch, arancini (deep-fried rice balls filled with whatever you like) and an espresso coffee. Finally, a light but unforgettable dinner with freshly fished Mediterranean bluefish.

18. Monte Carlo, Monaco

Monte Carlo is one of the hot places in Europe in December

You can’t say French Riviera without saying, Monte Carlo. Between the Formula One Monaco Grand Prix and the legendary Casino de Monte-Carlo, the city is an absolute symbol of luxury, fun, and entertainment.

For the car enthusiasts, I recommend visiting the impressive Private Collection of Antique Cars of H.S.H. Prince Rainier III.

However, if you are looking for a moment of relaxation away from the hustles and bustles of the city, then take a meditative stroll and a moment to decompress in the beautiful Japanese Gardens.

After a day spent visiting the city, Monte Carlo offers a lot in terms of nightlife, especially if you are in for some luxury partying!

With temperatures pendulating between 14°C (57°F) and 6°C (43°F), Monte Carlo is one of the best places to go in Europe in December.

19. Nicosia, Cyprus

Nicosia is one of the best places to go in Europe in December

For a winter holiday that’s both exotic and close to home, the island and republic of Cyprus are what you need.

The stunning island is located in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea, just south of Turkey , and its architecture and culture reveal influences from the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot heritage.

The weather, even in December, is consistently good, with spring-like temperatures going from 17°C (63°F) to 10°C (49°F).

When visiting Cyprus, you can’t miss out on its capital, Nicosia. To get a better understanding of the complex and rich history of the island, visit the Cyprus Museum.

There are also other several sites of both spiritual and artistic interest including the caravanserai of Büyük Han which is one of the most ancient buildings on the island.

Another must-see place is the Machairas Monastery, a monumental building overlooking a valley and surrounded by uncontaminated nature, and the UNESCO heritage site of the Panagia Asinou Church.

20. Granada, Spain

Granada is one of the warm places in Europe in December

The city of Granada, Andalusia, has both incredible natural surroundings and an amazing architectural style that puts together influences from the European and Arabic worlds.

When visiting this lively and colorful city, a must-see is the Arabic quarter of Albaicín.

Then, if you are up for a bit of a walk, you can reach the Mirador San Nicolas, one of the best viewpoints in the city,  and admire the Alhambra and the Sierra Nevada mountains.

In Albaicin, don’t miss out on the incredible Moorish palace, the former residence of Granada’s last Moorish King.

For a scenic stroll, you can visit the picturesque old Jewish quarter, but if you want to witness Granada’s culture in action, you should visit the Flamenco Barrio, Sacromonte.

21. Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain

Gran Canaria is one of the hot places in Europe in December

It doesn’t matter when you’re visiting the island, Gran Canaria is a perfect destination for backpackers and outdoors lovers that prefer a more adventurous holiday.

Especially if you love hiking , you should consider Gran Canaria as your perfect warm winter destination in Europe.

Avoid the tourists and the highest temperatures and enjoy hiking in the pristine nature and unbelievable landscapes that the Island has to offer.

For a truly unique outdoor experience, try one of the tours to the village of Tejeda and the incredible Roque Nublo.

Whether you are already an experienced surfer or a complete newbie who wants to try, Gran Canaria, with its signature good waves offers an ample choice of beaches where surfing is fun and easy to learn.

Also, if you are passionate about astronomy, there is no place better than Gran Canaria.

The stars can be observed, at high altitudes, particularly well on the island, thanks to an astronomical effect that the inhabitants call “donkey’s belly” or “Panza de Burro”.

For a starry sky to remember forever, visit the Astronomical Observatory of Temisas or the Roque Saucillo Astronomical Center.

22. Côte d’Azur (French Riviera), France

Côte D’Azur is one of the warm places in Europe in December

The Côte d’Azur, or French Riviera, has historically always been one of the most loved winter destinations in Europe .

Its mild climate and mostly serene weather, together with the classical beauty and the french-chic factor of the Rivera itself make it impossible not to take this region into consideration when planning your December winter sun vacations in Europe.

Whether you choose to visit one of the main cities, or you prefer to spend your time in the little towns that dot the region, the Côte d’Azur has indubitably a charm that cannot be matched.

Some of the most famous destinations include; Nice, Saint Tropez, and Cannes . Another smaller but picturesque town that’s worth visiting is Antibes.

For an alternative take on the French Riviera, just 10 minutes of sailing from the shore, you’ll be able to visit the paradise-like Porquerolles Island.

23. Mallorca, Spain

Mallorca is one of the warmer places in Europe in December

The Island of Mallorca, part of Spain’s Balearic Islands, is a holiday destination worth keeping in mind for every season.

Even in wintertime, its combination of beautiful nature, mountains, long shores, and remote bays, together with its distinctive architectural style and lively nightlife, makes Mallorca one of the warm places to visit in December in Europe and a place where everybody can have the best time.

When on the island, you have to visit the main city, the famous Palma de Mallorca, however, don’t miss out on the smaller and quaint towns in the internal part of the island.

Among the most loved destinations on the island, you will love Port de Sóller, and if you are interested in historical European landmarks , then pay a visit to the 14th-century royal fortress Bellver Castle.

If you love art, you may want to visit the town of Deia which is one of the most beautiful towns in Europe , famous for its distinctive colorful houses.

1. Budapest, Hungary

Fisherman's Bastion in Budapest, one of the best places to visit in Europe in December

In our opinion, Budapest makes one of the best winter city breaks in Europe. One of the biggest reasons is that there are so many thermal baths on offer, such as the Széchenyi Baths. There are also plenty of places to stay, no matter your budget.

If you spend any time wandering the city, you’ll quickly understand why the banks of the Danube river, the Castle Quarter, and the surrounding area is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

You can also take a boat along the river to view the city from another perspective; it’s one of the best things to do in Budapest.

Take time to see Budapest in all its glory at the Fisherman’s Bastion and Gellert Hill viewpoints. Check out the assorted Christmas markets and stop in Central Market Hall for some traditional food and souvenirs.

2. Barcelona, Spain

Interior of La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. This city is one of the best places to visit in Europe in December.

Do you have a limited Europe travel time frame but can’t decide between a city or a beach destination? Consider Barcelona, a destination that should be on every European traveler’s bucket list. The weather stays relatively mild all year round, making winter in Barcelona a favorite Christmastime destination. Plus, this northeastern corner of Spain has a unique mix of Catalonian and Spanish culture, which can be found nowhere else in the country.

Barcelona’s architecture is also unique, thanks to Antoni Gaudi. Visit his Park Güell at sunrise to watch the colors of the city light up, and watch the light dance through the windows of Basilica de la Sagrada Familia later in the day. Also, be sure to visit the charming Gothic Quarter, or Barri Gòtic. Its narrow medieval streets are filled with trendy bars, clubs and Catalan restaurants.

Las Ramblas offers tapas and other delightful cuisines, but take a wander down one of the many winding streets for hidden gems. There are so many unique places to discover. And when you are ready to relax, head to La Barceloneta beach to catch some rays or take a day trip to the mountains for a hike.

3. The Greek islands

Ancient walls along the water, once used as defense for the Greek island of Corfu

Greece has so much to offer, from Athens to its food. However, for relaxing travel in Europe during the holidays, consider one or more of Greece’s islands. Most islands are very quiet in the winter, making them a good alternative to typical winter city getaways.

If visiting the Greek Islands sounds interesting, you can visit Serifos for quiet sandy beaches and nature, or take a trip to the beautiful Kefalonia. It has sandy coves to explore and is home to Melissani lake. There is also the colorful fishing village of Assos, with a castle to explore.

Alternatively, opt for a well-known base and take day trips. Crete and Santorini are popular Greek islands for this time of year, as many places remain open. They have excellent facilities, plenty to do even in winter, a complete range of accommodation options, and beautiful architecture on offer.

4. Slovenia

Slovenia is roughly half the size of Switzerland and smaller than America’s state of New Jersey, but it packs a serious punch. You can spend days at scenic Lake Bled, exploring nearby hiking trails and castles.

However, if you have the time during your trip, add a few other stops to your itinerary. If you like hiking, take the time to visit Soca Valley and Triglav National Park. Enjoy views of the Julian Alps, lakes, and rivers.

You can also try parasailing, kayaking, skydiving, rafting, and other activities. There are also mines and caves such as Postojna Cave. You do not just have markets to enjoy during winter, but a live nativity scene at Postonjna cave!

Also, spend several days in the capital city. Winter in Ljubljana is less crowded, and the December Christmas market along the river is a joy to experience. You can also visit the castle, central market, and sample Slovenia’s cuisine while you’re there.

5. Vienna, Austria

Tourists in a square in Vienna, Austria. One of the best places to visit in Europe

Austria’s capital city is famous for its  coffee culture, opera, architecture, Carnival, and music. It is a city that offers something for everyone.

Visit the Schönbrunn Palace, a UNESCO world heritage site that was built for the Habsburgs in the 1700s. Enjoy a fun family trip to Prater amusement park. And of course, spend an evening at the Vienna State Opera, famed as one of the best opera houses in the world.

Vienna is centrally located in Europe, making it an extremely convenient base for doing day trips to neighboring countries or other parts of Austria. We thought Hallstatt in wintertime was especially charming.

6. Berlin, Germany

Berlin's Brandenburg Gate at Christmastime from our European winter trip

Berlin is an eclectic mix of history, culture, music, and art. Visit the classic Berlin travel essentials of the Berlin wall, Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag, and museum island. Also, enjoy the new sites, such as the long-awaited opening of the  Humboldt Forum .

Berlin has some of the best museums in the world. Five of them are on  Berlin’s Museum Island, and each appeals to different interests. You’ll want to spend a few days here, as it is the largest museum ensemble in the world and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We especially recommend the Pergamon Museum for Greek and Roman art and the Babylonian Ishtar Gate, and the collection of classical antiquities at the Neues Museum, which has the world-famous bust of Nefertiti.

Transport around Berlin is easy, but it is a good idea to pick your hotel location wisely. Mitte is nearby many popular attractions in the city. Others opt for Kreuzberg, Charlottenburg, or Prenzlauer Berg.

Germany’s rail system is efficient and well-planned, so Berlin is also a good base for exploring the region.

ⓘ TIP: If you plan to travel to Europe for several weeks, we recommend a wintertime visit to Munich. This Bavarian city will offer a complete contrast to Berlin, and also has dozens of attractions to visit.

7. London, United Kingdom

London Eye and Westminster on the Thames at sunset

London is a great place to add to your Europe travel list, no matter the time of year. For history lovers, there are many walking tours to capture poignant moments in London’s history. You can also visit iconic sites such as the Tower of London and Buckingham Palace.

There are also plenty of ways to see the city from above, including the London Eye, the Shard, the Emirates cable car, or the free Sky Garden (with booking).

The train connections also make it easy to reach the coast or other nearby attractions. Visit Windsor Castle, the seaside city of Brighton, or explore the  Jurassic Coast . You can also take a trip to the Warner Brothers Studio if you’re a fan of the Harry Potter film franchise.

London also offers a cultural melting pot of cuisine. Wander down Brick Lane to sample some famous Indian dishes or visit Bombay-inspired Dishoom. Another fun idea is to visit one of the many food courts, or combine food with the theatre in Covent Garden.

8. Croatia

people eating at a Christmas market in Zagreb

Croatia boasts many places to add to your Europe travel list. The most picturesque spot is the walled old town of Dubrovnik, with views of the Adriatic sea. We think it’s a great place to start exploring Croatia, as it is also home to one of the largest airports.

Croatia’s capital city consistently wins awards for the best Christmas markets in Europe , which is why we have a guide to visiting Zagreb in winter.  Enjoy the historical city with its many cozy private villas , cafes, and sights.

Also, visit the coastal city of Split for history, food, and relaxation. Diocletian’s Palace is a sight to behold! Nature lovers should take a trip to the famous turquoise lagoon of Plitvice National Park, the oldest park in Croatia. Or if you’re in Dubrovnik, you can take ferries to the Elaphiti islands of Koločep, Sipan, and Lopud. The Mediterranean forested hilly islands with picturesque small villages and beautiful beaches are worth a visit or two.

9. Ghent, Belgium

street in europe in december

Ghent combines history with culture, art, and food. There are many museums and cultural venues to visit, such as a former city hospital. It is often called Belgium’s canal city, and every three years, there’s a festival of lights in the medieval city.

Try some of the interesting sweet treats, such as a neuzeke, which means ‘little nose.’ There is also an ‘ironed mastel’ to try, the bagel version of a cinnamon bun. Opt for their waterzooi chicken stew if you prefer savory dishes, or try their beef stew.

10. Swedish Lapland

Hotel in Swedish lapland in distance, lake in foreground. Illustrating one of the best destinations in europe in december

The further north you go in Europe in December, the longer the night will be. So your best opportunity to see the northern lights will be in Swedish Lapland. This European travel destination is all about nature, with adventures such as ice fishing, traditional dogsledding, cross-country skiing, and more. There’s even a 6-day winter survival course for those who can’t get enough of the snow!

Indoors, Swedish Lapland has cultural museums, cooking classes, and other activities on offer. Learn about the Sami people who have lived in the Arctic region for thousands of years. You can visit at any time of year of course, but the activities you can do will change dramatically.

11. Rome, Italy

Closeup of the Colosseum in Rome

As they often say, Rome is an open-air museum! It also has lots of Christmas markets, which is why we recommend visiting in December. The nice thing is that if you visit outside of the peak summer months, prices are lower and sights like the Colosseum and Pantheon are also relatively quiet.

Rome’s incredible variety of museums will keep you warm and Vatican City is a favorite Christmastime attraction. And then there’s all that incredible Italian food you can enjoy every day….

If you stay for a while, train connections make it easy to visit other areas of Italy. We recommend a few days exploring the warmer southern region and cities like Florence.

ⓘ TIP: The Vatican Museums may be busy in December. You can avoid freezing on the ticket line by buying your ticket ahead of time.

Basking in the gentle warmth of the Mediterranean , Cyprus offers a delightful escape from December’s traditional cold climes.

This sun-kissed island country boasts a unique blend of cultures, ancient archaeological sites, and delightful cuisine.

Start your trip in Nicosia , the capital city.

Here, the old city’s sandstone walls hold a treasure trove of history.

From the grand Venetian columns of the Famagusta Gate to the Selimiye Mosque’s fusion architecture, Nicosia is a vibrant mix of old and new.

Don’t forget the coastal city of Paphos , home to the mesmerising Paphos Archaeological Park.

As you walk amid the Roman ruins and mosaic-filled villas under the warm winter sun, you’ll appreciate the slower pace of winter tourism – it’s much quieter than the heaving (and scorching) summer months!

5. Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain

european countries to visit in december reddit

Tenerife, the largest of Spain’s Canary Islands , is a veritable December paradise, with warm weather and plenty to do.

Off Africa’s northwest coast, this volcanic island is potentially the warmest place in Europe in December.

Tenerife’s diversity is enchanting – from the trenbolone acetate for sale golden and black sand beaches to the dramatic lunar landscapes of Teide National Park (a personal favourite).

Stroll along the vibrant promenades of Playa de las Americas , explore the quaint Canarian architecture in La Orotava , or gaze at the star-studded skies in the Teide National Park , home to Spain’s highest peak.

Just a note – because Teide is so high , it does get cold here – so make sure you pack some layers if you’re planning on visiting the park on your Tenerife winter trip !

The island’s cuisine is an adventure in itself.

Feast on local dishes like papas arrugadas and fresh seafood, ideally paired with a glass of island-produced wine, while enjoying the scenic ocean views.

6. Lanzarote, Canary Islands, Spain

Neighbouring Lanzarote is another fantastic sunny place in Europe in December .

This island’s unique beauty is born from volcanic activities , and no trip’s complete without exploring the Timanfaya National Park’s moon-like terrain.

Lanzarote’s potentially the warmest place in EU in December, so you can explore comfortably (and maybe even enjoy some beach time).

Explore the white-washed homes and green landscape of the island’s former capital, Teguise , or discover the inspiring works of artist César Manrique , deeply woven into the island’s fabric.

Take a leisurely walk through the La Geria wine region , where vines grow in unique volcanic pits.

End your day by savouring fresh seafood by the sea in El Golfo , as the setting sun bathes the island in warm hues.

Lanzarote in winter is truly a delight!

Sunny weather in Malta in March, overlooking the Sliema area

A group of sun-soaked islands nestled in the heart of the Mediterranean, where the sun shines brightly even in the depth of winter, Malta’s well known for its beaches.

You can still enjoy them throughout the winter – Malta’s weather generally stays warm, and it almost never drops close to freezing .

However, the island also boasts a history spanning over 7,000 years , balmy December temperatures, and a vibrant culture that infuses life into every street and alleyway.

The capital city, Valletta , is a living museum – its grand palaces, ancient forts, and charming cobbled streets are drenched in history.

The imposing St. John’s Co-Cathedral , the magnificent Grand Master’s Palace , and the stunning views from the Upper Barrakka Gardens are just a few of the highlights.

Head to the north of the island, to places like the Blue Grotto and Dingli Cliffs or venture to Golden Bay to see one of Europe’s most idyllic stretches of coastline.

Gozo, Malta’s sister island, offers serene countryside, pristine beaches, and a more laid-back style of life.

And in between all the sightseeing, be sure to indulge in some Maltese pastizzi , a warm and flaky local pastry – perfect for a sunny winter’s day!

Do you live in the north? There are some fantastic deals from Manchester Airport to Malta (for a 7-night stay) throughout December. Check them out here!

8. Seville, Spain

Spain Square or Plaza de Espana in Seville in the sunny summer day, Andalusia, Spain. Flower beds, bridges and channel in the foreground

In December, Aundulusian Seville sheds the scorching summer heat but keeps its warm charm intact.

Seville is steeped in rich Moorish history and brimming with flamenco’s fiery passion – Sevillians say that the originated in their city, although Granadans disagree!

Wander around the city’s heart, exploring the grandeur of Seville Cathedral , the lush gardens of Alcázar, and the bustling Plaza de España .

As the sun sets, find a local tablao and immerse yourself in a passionate flamenco performance.

And let’s not forget the food.

Seville’s tapas scene is a dream come true for food lovers – I especially loved the tapas at La Bartola , which had a few excellent veggie/ vegan options.

Picture a warm December evening, enjoying al fresco dining, a glass of vino in hand, and an array of tapas to choose from – doesn’t it sound like the perfect Spanish winter escape?

9. Lisbon, Portugal

tram on line 28 in lisbon, portugal

Lisbon, Portugal’s sun-dappled capital, shines even brighter in December’s mild climate.

With its charming trams, grand squares, and picturesque waterfront, Lisbon combines old-world charm with a vibrant, contemporary vibe.

Venture through Lisbon’s distinct neighbourhoods, each with its own unique flavour.

The Alfama district , with its narrow winding streets and historic Fado houses , is a delightful contrast to the modern riverside area of Parque das Nações .

A trip to Lisbon isn’t complete without tasting the iconic pastel de nata .

This custard tart, crisp on the outside and creamy within, is the perfect companion for a warm December stroll through the city.

It originated in Belem, a suburb of Lisbon, but their tarts are actually called pastels de Belem .

You can head to the bakery with the same name to try one of the originals, although I must say that I found their tarts too eggy, while I prefer the sweeter versions that you can find in the city.

The weather’s usually sunny in Lisbon in the winter season , but if you do have a few rainy days, the capital’s brimming with museums where you can learn about its unique culture and maritime history.

I love the Museu do Fado , which depicts Portugal’s famous dance and Belem Tower where you can learn about expeditions leaving the capital throughout its history.

I’ve been to Lisbon a few times, and consider it the perfect winter city break , with great weather and plenty of things to do!

10. Antalya, Turkey

Famous Konyaalti beach, scenic panoramic view from a cliif top. Travel destinations of Turkey and Antalya and mediterranean riviera

Perched on Turkey’s southwest coast, Antalya offers a warm winter escape with its splendid blend of sun-soaked beaches, ancient history, and vibrant bazaars.

Even in December, Antalya usually remains pleasantly warm, making it an ideal spot to escape the cold.

The city’s old town, Kaleiçi , is a labyrinth of narrow, winding streets lined with Ottoman-era houses , rustic cafes, and charming shops.

Explore the imposing Hadrian’s Gate , visit the picturesque marina, or admire the views from Hidirlik Tower.

For a dose of retail therapy, the local bazaars offer a colourful array of Turkish rugs, pottery, and spices.

And when hunger strikes , find a cosy eatery and indulge in the region’s rich, flavourful cuisine – from the hearty kebabs to the delicate baklava.

You might not be able to spend all day at the beach or go swimming in the sea, but a winter’s day in Antalya is sure to delight!

This beautiful island promises stunning landscapes, rich history, and hearty cuisine to make your winter escape memorable.

Or drive to Heraklion to explore the Palace of Knossos , a fascinating Minoan archaeological site.

The southern town of Rethymno , with its beautiful Venetian fortress and charming old town, is another must-visit.

In between sightseeing, make sure to sample local delicacies such as moussaka, souvlaki, and dolmades.

The warm Cretan sun, matched with the equally warm local hospitality, makes Crete a perfect December getaway.

Algarve region in south of Portugal is very popular tourist destination

The Algarve, Portugal’s southernmost region, is known for its beautiful beaches, golf resorts, and delightful seafood cuisine.

The region’s mild winter climate allows for outdoor activities, even in December, making it a favourite among winter sun seekers.

In fact, outdoor activities like hiking, cycling and golf are much more pleasant in the gentle winter heat compared to the harsh summer!

Discover the town of Lagos , with its fortified walls, the historic church of St. Anthony , and the stunning Ponta da Piedade.

Or visit Faro , the region’s capital, for its well-preserved old town, scenic marina, and lively nightlife.

Algarve’s culinary scene is a delight, with an array of seafood restaurants serving dishes featuring fresh local produce.

A bowl of cataplana (seafood stew) or a plate of grilled sardines by the sea is the ideal way to bask in the Algarve’s winter warmth.

13. Mallorca, Spain

Cathedral La Seu at sunet time, Palma de Mallorca islands, Spain

As the largest of Spain’s Balearic Islands , Mallorca offers a mix of stunning coastlines, mountains, and a wealth of historical landmarks.

The mild Mediterranean climate persists even in December.

Palma , the island’s capital, boasts a magnificent Gothic cathedral, a labyrinth of cobbled streets, and an abundance of chic bars and restaurants.

Don’t miss a visit to the beautiful town of Sóller – you can take a charming vintage train from Palma – and head to its port that’s filled with yachts and sandy beaches.

From the hearty sopas Mallorquinas to the sweet Ensaimada pastries , there’s plenty to indulge in!

Despite its compact size, the French Riviera’s Monaco is a beacon of glamour and luxury that also enjoys a pleasantly warm December.

The world’s second-smallest country is known for its Casino de Monte-Carlo , the annual Grand Prix, and the stunning Prince’s Palace.

Monaco-Ville, the old town, offers narrow medieval lanes, vibrant houses, and the splendid Saint Nicholas Cathedral.

The Oceanographic Museum , with its rich collection of marine life, is another must-visit.

Dining in Monaco can be as simple as a warm croissant at a cafe or as lavish as a multi-course meal at a Michelin-starred restaurant .

15. Marseille, France

Yachts reflecting in the still water of the old Vieux Port of Marseilles beneath Cathedral of Notre Dame, France, on sunrise

Marseille, France’s oldest city, offers an invigorating mix of history, vibrant culture, and Mediterranean warmth.

It’s not the hottest place in Europe in December, but it still basks in pleasantly mild temperatures – especially when you consider destinations further north!

From the bustling Old Port to the historic Le Panier neighbourhood , there’s a lot to explore in this coastal city.

Visit the iconic Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde , which offers panoramic views of the city, or explore the picturesque Calanques National Park .

The lively markets of Marseille are perfect for hunting local products and regional delicacies.

Snow-capped mountains, quaint villages and mouthwatering cuisine (much of which involves some form of melted cheese) make the French Alps a classic winter getaway. Most ski resorts open by early December, so you can get an early start on the slopes for the season, or just take part in the lively après-ski experience in iconic destinations like Val d'Isère and Chamonix. What's more, many villages like the châteaux-studded Annecy amp up the charm with cozy Christmas markets throughout the month. Winter in the Alps is never cheap, but try visiting earlier in the month before school holidays for the best room rates.

Make the trek to the Finnish Lapland for the ultimate Arctic experience. Finland's northernmost region promises a deep layer of snow all winter, perfect for skiing or sledding down the longest toboggan run in Europe. Most flights to this region land in Rovaniemi, home to Santa Claus Village, where you can meet the man in red, step across the Arctic Circle or embark on a reindeer sleigh ride. Though you'll only see about four hours of daylight, this makes for prime conditions to view the dazzling aurora borealis from the comfort of one of the glass hotels in the region.

December is one of the most popular months to visit the Bahamas – and for good reason. By the time this month rolls around, the threat of hurricanes has passed, making it terrific time to enjoy the outdoors. Spend your days lounging on one of the Bahamas' many beaches, snorkeling or diving in the crystal-clear water or taking a boat tour to a private island . What's more, if you're visiting around the holidays, you'll catch the travel-worthy Junkanoo festival , which celebrates Bahamian culture with parades and festivities on Boxing Day and New Year's Day.

Although Phuket, Thailand, offers a consistently warm climate year-round, its dry weather and calm water in December make this month a great time to visit. Plan on spending most of your time sunbathing, swimming, scuba diving and more at beautiful beaches like Nai Harn and Kata Noi. But remember, December falls within Phuket's peak tourist season, so you won't find many deals for flights and accommodations during this month. Avoid a holiday visit in late December for slightly better rates.

Located in the eastern Himalayas, Bhutan is a backpacker's dream due to its breathtaking landscapes and unmatched preservation. The remote kingdom's focus on cultural and environmental sustainability means heritage sites like the cliff-clinging Paro Taktsang and the riverside Punakha Dzong are never overcrowded. But cooler winter temperatures (averages range from the 30s to the 60s, depending on elevation) mean you'll encounter even fewer tourists. While a trip to this intriguing destination won't be cheap, a low-season visit can drive down the price of lodging and tours.

Nestled in southern Chilean Patagonia, this national park offers travelers a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Hailed among hikers as one of the most scenic destinations in the world, the park is home to turquoise lakes and dense forests, plus massive Grey Glacier and the towering granite of Cuernos del Paine. December offers up to 17 hours of daylight, allowing plenty of time for extensive hikes. But even though December is part of Patagonia's peak summer season, temperatures drop dramatically after nightfall, so visitors will want to pack layers.

This Hawaiian paradise is the perfect place to escape winter's onset. Weary travelers can thaw on colorful beaches like Punalu'u Beach (which has beautiful black sand ) and Papakolea Beach (a unique green sand option), while more adventurous types can go for a hike in 'Akaka Falls State Park or catch a glimpse of the more than 4,000-foot-tall Kilauea volcano at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. You'll likely contend with other snowbirds in December, but you'll find that hotel prices on the Big Island are still consistently lower than those on neighboring isles.

If Old Man Winter has you dreaming of warming things up, consider a trip to the Spice Island. Grenada, a tiny island in the Caribbean known for its aromatic spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, boasts steady temps in the 80s. And since December sits just between the rainy season and high tourism season, it's the perfect time to catch some rays without the crowds (or cost) of the months to come. Spend your days lounging on Grand Anse Beach or sampling the island's rich flavors at local markets or the House of Chocolate.

It's not surprising that dozens of holiday movies are set in New York. Dazzling sights like the iconic Christmas tree and ice skating rink at Rockefeller Center, decked-out window displays at Macy's and horse-drawn carriages in Central Park conjure up holiday cheer throughout the city. And while this metropolis offers plenty to do throughout the year, festive shows, Christmas-themed pop-up experiences and even the nip in the air make December one of New York's most magical months. Just be prepared for a bit of sticker shock; the holiday season is also one of the most popular (and expensive) times of year to visit.

If you're willing to brave the cold, travel to Prague for a fun and festive winter vacation. The city turns into a winter wonderland in December, with snow-dusted buildings and Christmas markets selling everything from locally made jewelry to toys to Christmas ornaments. Those with little ones in tow should try to arrive in early December when the annual St. Nicholas Eve event takes place. During this traditional celebration, you'll see Czechia's version of St. Nick, along with his angel and devil guides, hand out candy and other treats as they walk around the city.

While the Northern Hemisphere transitions to winter in December, Rio de Janeiro enters its peak summer season. And although this is one of the wettest times of the year here, you'll still enjoy optimal warmth and mostly sunny conditions. As such, there will be plenty of opportunities to see must-visit sights like the Christ the Redeemer statue or Sugarloaf Mountain. If you're keen on experiencing Rio's lively party scene during your visit, be sure to time your trip around Réveillon. This popular New Year's Eve celebration on Copacabana Beach draws millions of people annually with its music, dancing and fireworks.

The holiday season in Germany's fourth largest city can only be described as magical. Cologne hosts a handful of Christmas markets, including the popular Advent village at Cologne Cathedral, which boasts 150 stalls. When you're not taking in the city's imposing architecture or getting into the jovial spirit with a glass of Kölsch beer (a Cologne original), pop into Museum Ludwig to view modern art or the Chocolate Museum for tasty samples. Combat the dreary weather – average highs are in the low 40s and rain is common – by soaking away the chill at a thermal spa such as Neptunbad or Claudius Therme.

It's easy to fall in love with this Canadian destination, especially when it's covered in fresh snow. You'll be enchanted by Old Québec's sights and sounds as it transforms into a Christmas village. Shop for gifts (or for yourself) in Quartier Petit-Champlain, home to one of the oldest shopping streets in North America. Plus, with its 17th- and 18th-century architecture, French-speaking Quebec City allows you to soak up European culture without dropping the cash for a flight across the pond. Just be sure to bundle up; temperatures can drop to the single digits in December.

When thinking about the best places to travel in December, you may be tempted to view the month through the lens of Christmas—which is understandable, given the wealth of cities that go all out for the holidays . And while we’re always down for a European Christmas market or dazzling lights display, there are plenty of reasons to travel this month outside of the holly and the jolly.

Whether you want to get a jumpstart on ski season or escape the winter doldrums in the Caribbean, here are the 12 best places to travel in December.

This article has been updated with new information since its original publish date.

Miami

Miami, Florida

Many people head to Miami in early December for Art Basel Miami Beach , a glittering, four-day confab (scheduled for December 8–10 in 2023) that lures both the fashion and art worlds. The lineup of artists includes 24 first-time participants (out of 277 total) hailing everywhere from New York to Seoul, plus several guest lectures and dining experiences.

There are plenty of reasons to visit Miami beyond the final moments of Art Basel, of course—namely a booming high-end hotel scene. The St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort is an art destination in and of itself, with geometric metal walls and massive sculptures hanging from the lobby ceiling. Other luxurious amenities, like private butlers and a gourmet burger bar, make this the perfect place to celebrate a special occasion. For a beachier (but just as luxurious) stay, head to The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne , located about 15 miles from South Beach. Its ocean views and tequila-stocked restaurant are great any time of year, but this December welcomes a slew of holiday-themed perks, like eggnog in the lobby and peppermint pedicures in the spa.

Yellowstone in winter

Yellowstone National Park

If you haven’t visited Yellowstone in the dead of winter, you are missing out on one of the most incredible travel experiences out there. Not only will you escape the typical summer hoards that make it nearly impossible to see wildlife and popular sites like Old Faithful—starting in December, the park is closed to cars and will only allow snowcoaches and snowmobiles to enter—but the relative quiet and icy chills of winter make our oldest national park feel even more like a mystical wonderland. Just imagine: sleepy bison with snow-dusted beards, bright blue pools set against a blanket of white, and boardwalks billowing with steam from the surrounding thermal features.

There are only a couple of in-park lodges open in the winter, but luckily they are incredibly cozy and convenient. Located in the heart of Yellowstone, Old Faithful Snow Lodge will get an extra dose of holiday magic this December, with trees set up throughout the hotel, in-room Christmas sweets, cookie decorating stations, and visits from Santa. Guests can also book several outdoor excursions from the lodge, ranging from guided snowshoe tours to wildlife photo safaris.

Azores

The Azores, Portugal

This once-overlooked archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic is tailor-made for adventurers—think whale watching, hiking calderas, and rappelling down waterfalls. (The island of Terceira is home to the only volcano in the world where visitors can explore a chimney and secondary magma chamber, sitting side by side.) And while tourism has caught up to the Azores within the past decade, visiting during the winter gives you a glimpse of what Eden once looked like.

December isn’t chilly here, despite the archipelago’s Atlantic location—the Gulf Stream keeps the year-round temperatures surprisingly balmy, with the mercury rarely dropping below 60 degrees or so. The island of Santa Maria generally boasts the warmest climate, though swimming may be off the table in the winter. If you’re craving water time, pay a visit to a geothermally heated hot spring instead.

Best Places to Travel in December Salzburg at Christmas

Salzburg, Austria

Germany tends to get most of the attention when it comes to Christmas markets (for good reason), but neighboring Austria can be just as festive and charming—especially in the city of Salzburg. It’s not a surprise that the UNESCO World Heritage -listed Old City, which served as the backdrop for The Sound of Music, also fills its famed Christkindlmarkt with song.

With roots dating back to the 15th century, the market’s sing-alongs and traditional wind music are as much a part of the festivities as the mulled wine and stands selling ornaments and fluffy socks. We’re not mad about the bauernkrapfen (fried pastries), either. The market earns extra points for being just steps away from Hotel Goldener Hirsch , one of the world’s oldest luxury hotels and a perfect spot to warm up between outdoor shopping sprees.

Just down the Caribbean coast from the Yucatán with a fraction of the tourism, Belize has transformed from a backpacker haven into a luxury destination over the past few years. (Bonus: It’s only a five-hour flight from New York.) Along with world-class reefs for diving and Mayan ruins for exploring, the country is known for its conservation efforts, particularly when it comes to protecting ocean life. Many hotels and resorts have jumped on the eco-friendly bandwagon, including Turneffe Island Resort , which goes to great lengths to support the population of Antillean Manatees in the nearby Turneffe Atoll. Guests may get a chance to spot the gentle giants while staying on the resort’s 14-acre private island, while gift shop purchases go straight to the Belize Manatee Conservation Program.

Aside from offering an indulgent, adults-only stay on a true white-sand beach, Matachica Resort & Spa provides interactive workshops to learn about the Belize Barrier Reef, including guided scuba diving trips and helicopter tours. Given that December 4 marks World Wildlife Conservation Day, we say there’s no better time to pay these forward-thinking hotels a visit.

Switzerland

Switzerland

Switzerland is always one of the world’s most beautiful countries, but it becomes downright magical come winter: city squares dusted with snow and mountainsides transformed into the best ski slopes on the planet. It can be hard to pick just one Swiss destination to visit in December, which is why hopping on the Glacier Express is the perfect introduction to this wintery wonderland.

The Glacier Express is an eight-hour train ride that connects two of Switzerland’s biggest mountain resorts—Zermatt and St. Moritz—but it’s really more about the journey than the destination here. The train passes over 290 bridges, delivering panoramic views of landmarks like the Oberalp Pass and Matterhorn, and it even includes three-course meals to really help you enjoy every second of the ride.

Charleston South Carolina

Charleston, South Carolina

If you want an immersive Christmas experience but aren’t a fan of cold weather, Charleston is the perfect destination for you. In fact, we’d argue that winter is one of the best times to visit, when temperatures hover around the 50s and 60s. Holiday attractions this year include the 34th Annual Holiday Festival of Lights (November 10–December 31, 2023), featuring an estimated 2 million twinkling lights, and Holiday Swing (December 2, 2023), a concert of reimagined Christmas carols courtesy of the Charleston Jazz Orchestra.

The city has no shortage of fabulous hotels, but some notable properties go all out for the holidays. The French Quarter Inn , voted one of the best hotels in Charleston by our readers, will be fully decked out with a Christmas tree and free gingerbread cookies in the rotunda, while the Sleigh Bell Suite comes with even more festive amenities: an in-room eggnog bar, freshly-baked cookies served by the fireplace, holiday movie screenings, and a special reading of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas from Santa himself. Over at The Spectator Hotel , personal butlers assigned to each guest can transform your room with personalized Christmas decorations, plus bring you any treats and drinks you request.

Whistler Canada

Whistler, Canada

If you’re desperately seeking slopes, you can’t do much better than the largest ski area in North America. With 8,171 acres of skiable terrain and hills ranging in difficulty from green to double-black, the twin peaks of Whistler Blackcomb truly have something for every winter sports enthusiast. Both the Big Red Express lift and Creekside Gondola were reworked a couple of years ago to hold more people, meaning the mountains will feel far less congested and visitors can enjoy even more rounds of powder.

Once you pack up your poles for the day, soak up all the après glory at Whistler Village. Here you’ll find the resort area’s largest concentration of bars and restaurants, ranging from the buzzy high-end seafood restaurant Wild Blue to the upscale yet relaxed Braidwood Tavern . In terms of hotels, the Fairmont Chateau Whistler looks (and feels) like a true fairy tale castle, nestled at the base of Blackcomb.

Santiago Chile

Santiago, Chile

Travelers often overlook Chile’s capital city in favor of splashier South American destinations like Rio or Buenos Aires—but we encourage you not to make that same mistake. Santiago is not only a superb base for outdoor adventure, thanks to its location between the Andes and the Pacific, but it’s an excellent standalone destination for anyone who loves great food, great wine, and plenty of shopping opportunities.

After exploring the city’s coolest neighborhoods, tack on a side trip to Valparaíso—the former seaport home of Pablo Neruda and current headquarters for the Chilean Navy. It’s just a two-hour drive here from Santiago, but you’ll want to plan to stay overnight (and not just because you’ll be drinking a lot of wine). With its colorful hillside houses and abundance of museum-worthy street art, Valparaíso is not an easy place to say goodbye to.

Antarctica

If you’re anything like us, emerging from two years of lockdowns and closed borders has inspired you to finally book that once-in-a-lifetime trip you’ve always dreamed about—like an expedition to Antarctica , for example. The white continent is at its best from December to March, when wildlife is active and the sun shines for nearly 24 hours a day. And while trips like these typically require a lot of advance planning, there’s still time to book a spot on an expedition cruise ship before 2023 wraps up (although you may want to use this time to start researching for next year).

Ponant has about a dozen sailings available through the end of December, with trips ranging from 10 to 15 nights and including stops in South Georgia and the Falkland Islands. Another great option is Quark Expedition’s “Antarctic Explorer: Discovering the 7th Continent” voyage, an 11-day trip with six departure dates within the month of December (plus many in 2024). Each sailing includes the typical stops, but Quark also started offering a majorly cool add-on a few years ago: alpine heli-trekking, in which guests board a helicopter (just imagine those views) and fly to typically inaccessible terrain to enjoy hiking or snowshoeing.

Moskito Island British Virgin Islands

British Virgin Islands

Made up of more than 60 tropical isles, the British Virgin Islands are easily one of the best places to travel in December. The archipelago is the epitome of Caribbean relaxation with white-sand beaches and lush rainforests—not to mention some of the best hotels in the entire region. Richard Branson’s Necker Island is arguably the most famous resort, freshly reconstructed with an emphasis on sustainability. New wind turbines join the existing solar farm so that the resort runs on 90 percent renewable energy. Even the staff uniforms are made from recycled plastic.

Recent years saw the arrival of two new private island resorts, both of which appeared on our 2022 Hot List . Off the northern end of Virgin Gorda, Saba Rock ’s nine-bedroom boutique hotel boasts a bustling rooftop bar, spacious guest rooms, and a seemingly endless supply of water sports. Meanwhile, Branson struck gold again with Moskito Island , located just two miles away from Necker Island. Guests with deep pockets can choose from three private estate rentals, each with its own distinct style. Amenities like private chefs and house managers available to help 24/7—plus the chance of running into Branson himself on the tennis courts—offer a true taste of a billionaire’s vacation.

best places to travel in december Paris

Paris shines extra bright during the holiday season, from the lights along the Champs-Élysées to store window displays that rival museum art installations. This year is a particularly great time to plan a trip, with inexpensive nonstop flights with French Bee (France’s first low-cost carrier ) and a crop of new hotel openings. Be one of the first to stay at Bulgari Hotel Paris or Hôtel Madame Rêve , housed in a former 24-hour post office—or choose from one of the many established hotels in the city.

For an extra-special holiday experience, book a spot on the “ Paris at the Holidays ” group trip (November 30–December 7) from specialty planning company French Affaires. Curated by France travel expert Elizabeth New Seitz, the trip includes an evening tour of the city’s Christmas lights, a private tour of the Louvre, a Buche de Noel (yule log) cooking class, and French afternoon teas at some of the city’s top palace hotels.

1. Rovaniemi, Finland

In the foreground, there are several glass igloo-style cabins, softly illuminated from within, allowing guests to experience the natural wonder while staying warm inside. The green hues of the Northern Lights stretch across the sky, creating a magical and serene atmosphere in this remote winter landscape.

Average Weather in December: 🌡️ High 23°F, Low 9°F, Rainfall 1.5 inches

One of the best places to travel in Europe in December is the small city of Rovaniemi, Finland. Located in Lapland, the area is a winter wonderland waiting to be explored.

In December, the top  thing to do in Roveniemi  is to visit Santa’s Village. The city is the official home of Santa. You can meet him, send post cards from Santa’s Village, hang with reindeer, and shop for unique souvenirs.

Once you’ve got your festive shopping done, head out to the countryside to enjoy the snow! Head out snowmobiling or even dog-sledding. Be sure to bundle up with snowproof, windproof pants and jackets.

While the weather is cold at this time of year, it’s also the best time of the year to see the Northern Lights. You need a clear, cold, and dark sky to see them, and Lapland has plenty of that. Sunset is usually around 4pm in December, so you’ll have plenty of time to try to catch them dancing in the sky.

Tbilisi is one of the best destinations to visit during Christmas. The city’s mix of ancient charm and modern vibrancy makes it perfect for the festive season. In December, Tbilisi transforms into a magical wonderland with twinkling lights and decorations and a lively Christmas market in Orbeliani Square.

The city has so much history and culture. A few top things to do are explore the ancient Narikala Fortress, relax in the sulphur baths of Abanotubani, and take in the views from Mtatsminda Park.

The best way to enjoy the city is by taking a  self-guided Tbilisi walking tour  and learning about the history and importance of the places. Also, do not forget to indulge in the Georgian local cuisine.

Tbilisi is cold during December, ranging between 1 and 9 degrees Celsius. The cool weather adds to the cozy atmosphere, making it ideal for wandering the historic streets.

However, December can be chilly, and some outdoor activities might be restricted. But if you don’t mind just enjoying and immersing yourself in the holiday season, Tbilisi in December offers a unique and memorable experience.

This image shows a winter scene in Oslo, Norway, featuring a person taking a dip in icy water near a floating sauna, with another person standing nearby. In the background, the modern and angular architecture of the Oslo Opera House is prominently visible across the partially frozen harbor, reflecting the cold, crisp weather. The surrounding buildings and a clear blue sky complete this striking urban winter landscape.

Average Weather in December: 🌡️ High 34°F, Low 23°F, Rainfall 2.5 inches

Towards winter in  Oslo , people start hibernating at home with hot cocoa and a blanket as the temperatures drop. Then, come December, there is a dramatic change, and the city comes to life! With lights, dining, parties, Christmas markets, thousands of people in the streets, and smiling faces everywhere, Oslo is a great December destination.

Oslo in December is all about enjoying the winter and the holiday feeling, with temperatures slightly below zero. Go ice skating in Spikersuppa on Karl Johan Street below the Royal Castle, shop in the glittering stores, and have  gløgg  (a warm toddy with red wine) while strolling the Christmas markets as your warm breath turns into steam.

In December, you can take the tram to the snowy Marka forest to go skiing, walk on the Oslo Opera House roof, and watch the beautiful icy fjord in the blue light. Visit the venerable Nobel Peace Center, Aker Brygge Wharf, attend a concert at Rockefeller, or spend an evening in the National Theater watching a classical play.

In addition to all the interesting things you can do here year-round, December has an extra flare with its blue winter light, advent decorations, and cozy atmosphere in the snowy streets. Despite being a somewhat pricey destination for international travelers, visiting Oslo in December might make you fall in love with this unique capital!

Lyon is one of the best European cities to visit in December, especially if you schedule your trip to attend the Fête des Lumières.  This amazing Festival of Lights is one of  Lyon’s best festivals  and is held around December 8 th .

Visit Lyon’s top attractions including the stunning hilltop basilica, explore the fascinating traboules in Vieux Lyon, and admire the trompe-l’oeil murals.  There are plenty of great museums to visit on a rainy day, such as the Musée des Confluences or the Museum of Cinema and Miniatures.

Foodies will love a trip to Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse, an incredible gourmet food market. Be sure to eat at a traditional  bouchon , known for cozy ambiance and hearty meals.  Or enjoy a fine dining experience at a Michelin restaurant!

The downside to visiting Lyon in December is the weather (expect highs in the mid-40s).  But as long as you dress appropriately, you’ll still have a great time!

5. Amsterdam, Netherlands

This image shows the interior of a lively café or restaurant in Amsterdam, decorated in a festive, carousel-inspired theme. The centerpiece is a large, ornate carousel canopy with string lights hanging from the wooden ceiling, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Patrons are seated at tables enjoying drinks and conversation, while the surroundings are adorned with holiday decorations, enhancing the cozy and cheerful ambiance of the space. A young boy is seen walking through the scene, adding a touch of liveliness to the setting.

Average Weather in December: 🌡️ High 43°F, Low 36°F, Rainfall 3.1 inches

Amsterdam is one of the popular destinations to spend December in Europe. It’s a lively city during this time of the year despite the fact that the weather can be wet and cold.

My recommendation is to  stay central in Amsterdam . That way you can easily get to all the activities by foot plus whenever the cold gets too much you can always walk back to your room.

Now the Christmas markets in Amsterdam are large and busy. That however isn’t the only attraction. There is a light festival which is held every year in both December and January. Here artists from all over come to set up light displays.

You could take a canal cruise to see them or just walk along the canals. I preferred the latter because I could see the displays better.

There is also a great skating rink that is fun to spend time at. They even have stuff for kids so that they can learn to. If you don’t have skates, don’t worry you can rent them at the place.

6. Abisko, Sweden

This image shows a small, snow-covered cabin in Abisko, Sweden, with the sign

Average Weather in December: 🌡️ High 16°F, Low 5°F, Rainfall 0.7 inches

Abisko, Sweden is one of the best places to travel in Europe in December for those seeking an adventurous winter escape and the chance to see the northern lights. December sees the longest nights of the year, increasing your chances of seeing the northern lights.

Abisko is also one of the best places in Europe to witness the northern lights because of a natural phenomenon known as the Blue Hole of Abisko. The Blue Hole refers to a weather pattern where Abisko sees a high number of clear nights (you won’t see the northern lights through the clouds) and the area has minimal light pollution.

Besides the auroras, you can explore the snowy Abisko National Park on snowshoes or cross-country skis, or even try ice climbing.

Although advantageous for seeing the northern lights, the short days can be challenging; expect sunrise around 10:45 am and sunset by 4:15 pm. Temperatures will plunge well below freezing, so proper Arctic gear is essential for staying safe in Abisko in winter .

7. Malaga, Spain

This image shows a panoramic view of Málaga, Spain, with a focus on the city's iconic bullring, Plaza de Toros, surrounded by modern apartment buildings. In the background, the calm blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea stretch out to the horizon, while a few ships are visible in the distance. The green trees in the foreground frame the scene, adding a natural element to the urban and coastal landscape. The bright and clear weather highlights the beauty of this vibrant Mediterranean city.

Average Weather in December: 🌡️ High 63°F, Low 46°F, Rainfall 3.3 inches

Malaga, situated in the south of Spain, is a great European vacation in December.

The city offers a different Christmas vibe than traditional white and snow Christmas.

It is sunny, and you will enjoy mild temperatures but still experience the Spanish Christmas atmosphere.

See the Christmas light show on Larios Street, browse the market at Paseo del Parque and indulge in some delicious Christmas sweets like mantecados (Spanish-style Shortbread).

Besides the Christmas activities, you can visit many of Malaga’s museums, including the well-known Picasso Museum and historic buildings like the cathedral. Spending time in  the historic centre of Malaga  is a must.

December is also a good month for hiking. Although you might experience a little bit of rain, rainy days aren’t the norm in Malaga, and you will probably enjoy sunny days with pleasant temperatures to explore the countryside, which is underrated.

There are many hiking routes near Malaga, such as Caminito del Rey and Montes de Malaga.

8. Hamburg, Germany

This image captures the bustling scene in front of the Hamburg City Hall (Rathaus) in Germany, with its distinctive neo-Renaissance architecture and tall clock tower dominating the view. The square in front of the Rathaus is filled with people, some visiting a small Christmas market set up with festive stalls and a carousel. The bright blue sky and the modern glass structure nearby contrast with the historic building, blending old and new elements in this urban landscape.

Average Weather in December: 🌡️ High 40°F, Low 34°F, Rainfall 2.4 inches

Hamburg is one of the prettiest cities in Germany to visit during December. And this is because of the Christmas markets, and of how beautiful the city is dressed in anticipation to the winter holidays.

Located in the North of Germany, Hamburg is easy to get to from any major European destination, with direct flights. The airport it conveniently connected to the city centre by train, in just half an hour.

The main reason to visit Hamburg in December are the Christmas markets and all the events around them. The  Christmas markets in Hamburg  are some of the most beautiful in Europe – but also pretty special.

Hamburg is probably the only city in Europe that has a sexy Christmas market, with a stripping Santa, naughty decorations, and adult only gifts. This is definitely a place where only adults can come to have fun.

For the rest of the family, there are plenty of other Christmas markets dotted all over the city, some smaller than others. The largest one is in front of the City Hall, where a Santa flies over every day in his sleigh, whishing everyone Happy Holidays.

When exploring the markets, don’t miss trying out the typical food such as bratwurst, potato cakes topped with cabbage, raclette, or the crispy roast pork with crackling. Besides glühwein, also try the liquor flavoured hot wine too.

The only downside of visiting Hamburg in December might be the weather. It often snows at this time, and the temperatures drop below 0 degrees Celsius.

9. Lech, Austria

This image shows a charming winter night scene in Lech, Austria, with snow-covered streets and buildings. A cozy, well-lit hotel named "Hotel Krone" is in the foreground, its exterior adorned with icicles and soft lighting. In the background, a beautifully lit church with a traditional onion-shaped dome adds a picturesque touch to the alpine village. People are seen walking along the snowy road, enjoying the peaceful and festive atmosphere, with Christmas trees and lights adding to the seasonal charm.

Average Weather in December: 🌡️ High 28°F, Low 17°F, Rainfall 3.5 inches (mostly snow)

If you are looking for a luxury ski resort in December, look no further! Lech in Austria is a truly magical place to be in December. It’s like a winter wonderland where big names such as Princess Diana frequented in the 90s.

The slopes are child-friendly, and I really enjoyed learning how to ski here for the first time! The idyllic village honestly looks like it’s from a Christmas card or festive jigsaw puzzle– I often visit countries across Europe, but I have never seen anything like this!

You can rent your ski or snowboarding gear and boots in the village, and it’s advisable to wear thermal layers as the days can be very snowy.

One downside is that the location is very expensive, but if you find a good trainer for the slopes, they may be able to guide you in choosing an affordable skiing trail and the best deals for equipment!

A vintage green car is parked on a cobblestone street, adorned with a large stack of oversized, gift-wrapped presents and greenery on its roof. The street is bustling with people, enjoying the Christmas decorations, which include beautifully lit trees and garlands strung across the buildings. The overall atmosphere is cheerful and festive, with the historic architecture of Covent Garden providing a charming backdrop to the holiday festivities.

Average Weather in December: 🌡️ High 48°F, Low 39°F, Rainfall 2.4 inches

London is an absolute bucket list destination for any European vacation . The magic of London is in its ability to obscure time, taking you back centuries as you walk the streets of Westminster, or propelling you into the future as you ride the London Eye and gaze at the futuristic skyline.

Visit Kensington Palace, Hyde Park, Buckingham Palace, and Big Ben for must-see historical points. Then, tour the Tower of London and snap pictures of the London Bridge near the River Thames.

Add in a trip to the Natural History Museum and the Science Museum should London’s famous rainy weather prevail. You can easily purchase a Tube pass to get from one end of the city to the other, and I recommend at least 5 days to see the major sites.

London in December is especially magical, brimming with festive Christmas markets and glittering lights from Camden Market to Covent Gardens and across the city.

Grab a spiced mulled wine as you stroll through the holiday stalls and take in the brightly decorated city squares. Best of all, you won’t be fighting the summer tourist crowds as you explore the city.

Average Weather in December: 🌡️ High 43°F, Low 33°F, Rainfall 1.9 inches

If there’s one place to visit in Europe in December, I highly recommend Belgrade, Serbia. There are plenty of things to do in Belgrade during this time.

Like many other European cities, Belgrade has Christmas markets scattered around the city center, especially on the main pedestrian street, Knez Mihaila. Here, you’ll find local products like cheese and meat that are must-tries.

Another reason I can’t stop recommending Belgrade, no matter the time of year, is because the city always has something going on. There are always parties in the splavs—small clubs floating on the riverside—so there’s always a lively atmosphere.

The food in Belgrade is amazing, and the Skadarlija district is home to some of the best restaurants and bars in the city. Be sure to visit Zavičaj, one of the best spots for local cuisine.

December in Belgrade can be cold, so I recommend spending some time in the city’s cozy coffee shops, and don’t miss trying Krofne, a Serbian doughnut that’s absolutely worth it.

You need to visit Belgrade in December for its vibrant atmosphere and incredible food!

Lisbon is a fantastic destination in December, blending a mild winter weather with festive charm, and rich cultural experiences.

During December, Lisbon transforms into a festive wonderland with beautifully decorated streets, twinkling lights, and lively Christmas markets. Key spots like Rossio Square and Praça do Comércio feature impressive displays, making evening strolls particularly delightful as each corner and praça in Lisbon has its own take on the event.

Visitors can enjoy traditional Portuguese holiday treats, such as Rabanadas (Portuguese French toast), and Bolo-rei (Portuguese king cake). As well as your typical Lisbon food and drinks like Pastéis de Nata and Ginjinha.

The quieter tourist season allows for a more relaxed experience while visiting some of the city’s iconic sites, including the São Jorge Castle and Jerónimos Monastery.

Overall, Lisbon in December offers a warm, festive atmosphere perfect for a winter getaway, and a glimpse into a quieter but festive side of Portugal.

Moreover, the Old and New Town of Edinburgh is a Unesco World Heritage Site.

December is the time when this magical city hosts its famous Christmas Market at the Princes Street Gardens. There are various beautifully decorated stalls selling traditional crafts, gifts, and delicious treats.

You can participate in many fun activities, like taking a ride on the gigantic Big Wheel and the Star Flyer. Plus, Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Botanic Garden host various Christmas special events for all age groups.

Hogmanay is an integral part of Edinburgh’s Christmas celebrations. It is a three-day annual celebration from 30th December to New Year’s Day, when the city comes to life with street parties, fireworks and live music.

Average Weather in December: 🌡️ High 65°F, Low 50°F, Rainfall 4.2 inches

Limassol, located on the southern coast of Cyprus along the Mediterranean, is the island’s second-largest city. Unlike many European cities, Limassol doesn’t get snow in December; temperatures range between 10 to 18 degrees Celsius, making it an excellent holiday destination.

Consider staying in a hotel with a heated indoor pool for cooler, rainy days, but you might still swim in the sea if you don’t mind colder water. Recommended hotels include Parklane, Amathus, Four Seasons, and Amara. For casino enthusiasts, Limassol offers “City of Dreams,” the largest casino resort in Europe.

December is also great for exploring Limassol’s surroundings. Visit the white stones and charming villages like Kalavasos, the fishing village of Zygi, and Lefkara , known for lace and silver crafts.

The city and villages are beautifully decorated for Christmas, with some offering special holiday activities. Enjoy wandering through the old town and marina, which have many restaurants and bars.

The downside of visiting in December is the possibility of rain, limiting activities. It’s also a quieter, less touristy season, so vibrant nightlife is less common.

Vienna, Austria is the perfect place to visit in December! It’s Christmas time and Europe has the best Christmas Markets. Vienna was among the first Christmas markets in the world, starting from 1298.

The vibrant city hosts 20 different markets from mid-November to late December. Most of the markets are located near historic buildings, but you’ll find smaller ones on side streets or near local churches.

One of the ‘don’t-miss’ markets is at Rathaus City Hall (shown in photo), Vienna’s most important non-religious building in the Neo-Gothic style. It is the official seat of the Mayor and the meeting place of the city senate/provincial government.

The Rathaus Market offers outdoor free concerts and an ice skating circuit (3000 square meters) where you can rent ice skates.

December is the perfect time to experience this beautiful city. The only downside would be the cold temperatures or the crowds that come to the Christmas Markets.

Tall, modern sculptures of seated figures, perched atop high poles, add an artistic touch to the open space. Despite the overcast sky and wet ground, people are seen walking and enjoying the open area, giving the scene a blend of historical charm and contemporary art.

Average Weather in December: 🌡️ High 55°F, Low 42°F, Rainfall 3.5 inches

December is a  great month to visit Nice  in Côte d’Azur. Freed from the summer heat and the influx of tourists, this city takes on a truly unique, relaxed vibe in winter. The downside is that winter days are shorter, which leaves less time for outdoor sightseeing. Still, Nice is beautiful any time of day.

Avid swimmers will appreciate a dip in the azure waves of the Mediterranean. The water temperature in December hovers around 14°C, and there are many swimmers this time of year, so the spirit of camaraderie is very much alive.

After (or instead of) the refreshing dip, enjoy a cup of coffee with freshly baked viennoiseries in one of the cozy cafés along the Promenade des Anglais.

Then take a walk through Vieille Ville, the city’s old town. In December, Nice is beautifully decorated for Christmas, and there is the Village de Noël, a vibrant Christmas market near Place Masséna, the main square of Nice.

Other must-visits include Castle Hill, offering a panoramic view of the seaside, and the lively Cours Saleya markets. The artistic scene is rich in the city, with the Matisse and Chagall museums among the top recommendations.

Average Weather in December: 🌡️ High 43°F, Low 31°F, Rainfall 2.2 inches

December is one of the best times of the year to visit Milan, and it’s my favorite vacation destination in Italy. The city transforms into a winter wonderland, with festive lights and decorations everywhere.

Start your visit at the iconic Duomo di Milano—seeing this stunning cathedral with a giant Christmas tree in front is truly special. Plus, the views from the rooftop are breathtaking. On a clear day, you can even see the Swiss Alps and Apennines in the distance! Before you visit, make sure to read up on the  Duomo Milan dress code  so you don’t get turned away at the door. It’s a stunning place you won’t want to miss, and a little preparation ensures you can fully enjoy the experience.

Another top thing to do is to shop at the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, Milan’s 19th-century shopping mall that’s as elegant as it is historic. It’s the perfect place to find luxury gifts (for family or yourself!) or simply soak in the gorgeous architecture.

If you love art, you’ll want to visit the Accademia Gallery where you can see Michelangelo’s Statue of David. Be sure to check out the Oh Bej! Oh Bej! Christmas market, which usually runs from December 7th to 10th, and the Milanese Christmas lights show, which lights up the city from early December through the New Year.

The only downside to visit in December is it can be chilly with temperatures around 4-8°C. However, just pack warmly, and you’ll experience Milan at its most enchanting time of the year!

Prague is a fantastic destination in December, especially for those who love the festive atmosphere of Christmas markets. The city transforms into a winter wonderland, with  several markets  to explore and a magical, festive atmosphere to soak up at every corner.

The most well-known market is in Old Town Square, but there are smaller, less crowded ones around the city offering a more local experience.

Wenceslas Square is another great spot, with its market stretching the length of the square and plenty of food stalls serving local treats like trdelník and sausages.

December also brings Saint Mikuláš Day on December 5th, a fun and interesting celebration where Saint Mikuláš, an angel, and the devil walk through the streets, handing out treats to children.

While the weather can be chilly, with a mix of rain and snow, it only adds to the city’s magical atmosphere. A potential downside is the crowds and unpredictable weather, but the holiday spirit and stunning scenery make it an unforgettable time to visit.

The guards, dressed in traditional dark uniforms with green accents and tall hats, are marching in sync across the courtyard in front of the palace's grand arches and columns. December is a magical time of year to explore Copenhagen, especially if you love to visit Christmas markets like we do.  One of the top rated Christmas markets in Europe can be found at Tivoli Gardens which happens to also be the second oldest amusement park in the world!

There, alongside the rides, you’ll find an amazing Christmas display made up of over 1,000 Christmas trees, 70,000 baubles and more than 500,000 fairy lights!

As well as Tivoli Gardens you can discover lots of smaller more localised markets in the city which you can enjoy as your tour the city.  In our opinion the most fun way to visit Copenhagen is by riding a bike.

However, remember to wrap up warmly because the average daytime temperature is around 2°C (36°F), and there is even a chance of snow!

Copenhagen is definitely worth visiting  in December, because as well as having lots of fantastic outdoors places to visit, it’s also got some great museums and castles such as Rosenborg Castle and Amalienborg Palace to discover.
