Elton John shines in ‘final’ show in Las Vegas — PHOTOS

The knighted legend performed his first and (according to the tour title) only concert at Allegiant Stadium on his “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” tour on Tuesday night.

Elton John acknowledges the crowed during his ''Farewell Yellow Brick Road,'' final tour at All ...

Elton John’s Las Vegas history has wound through the resort lined with a replica Yellow Brick Road.

It was MGM Grand, with its Emerald City effects, where John and Billy Joel co-headlined in 1995 and again in 2003. Tuesday night, John flipped the calendar and and enlarged his Land of Oz in Las Vegas. The knighted legend performed his first and (according to the tour title) only concert at Allegiant Stadium, on his “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” tour.

How we start it … @eltonofficial @AllegiantStadm #RJNow #Vegas pic.twitter.com/LqlN28ib2t — John Katsilometes (@johnnykats) November 2, 2022

The venue, with a 65,000 capacity for football, was set at about 35,000 for the John concert. Looked about filled. Lots of us who qualify for a Just For Men sample group were in the house.

John showed up in a black tux, its tailed jacket splashed with multicolored rhinestones. Later it was a salmon-pink number with turquoise lapels. As usual his attire, hinted to Liberace’s grandeur, another facet of John’s career that seizes Vegas’s lineage.

How we close it. “Fantastic,” as the captain’s jacket says. @eltonofficial says goodbye to #Vegas . Fantastic to be in his presence and a fabulous show. #RJNow @reviewjournal pic.twitter.com/cBALFv2Vnv — John Katsilometes (@johnnykats) November 2, 2022

The 75-year-old showman opened with a flurry with “Bennie and the Jets” and “Philadelphia Freedom” launching the performance. “I Guess That’s Why They Call It the Blues” followed, with John’s tribute to Aretha Franklin, “Border Song,” in the early spree.

We say it was John’s “final” appearance in Vegas with a qualifier, as anything is possible even when superstars pledge finality. John has been insisting this is it, saying he wanted to take time away “to spend with my young family.”

But a musician of John’s caliber is forever in high demand. We would not be surprised to see him return to residency here in 2024, if he’s up for it. Maybe not with his full band, but something of an Elton at the piano show would sit nicely at this point of his career.

Dedicated to #ArethaFranklin … @eltonofficial #RJNow @reviewjournal pic.twitter.com/bhMQWRhNPH — John Katsilometes (@johnnykats) November 2, 2022

Others have found the tug of the stage too strong to resist. Cher has starred in two Las Vegas residency productions and headlined two North American tours since her “farewell” tour of 2003-05. The Eagles have been on a farewell campaign for a quarter-century. Kiss, Motley Crue, the Doobie Brothers, The Who have all said goodbye, in some form. All are still playing today, including performances in Las Vegas. The Who is at Dolby Live this weekend.

John is very familiar with the Vegas residency culture, hosting two series at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace. He served up “The Red Piano” from 2004-09, and and “Million Dollar Piano” at Caesars Palace from 2011-18. In all, Sir Elton played 444 shows in those two residencies. In all, he played 469 concerts in Las Vegas dating to his first, in 1971 at Las Vegas Convention Center.

Those shows at Caesars typically ran for 90 minutes. “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” covered 2½ hours. The set list was stuffed with the expected classics, “Your Song,” “Daniel,” “Crocodile Rock,” “Rocket Man,” The Bitch is Back” and “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting.”

The latter song rocked itself off the rails, one of the night’s few missteps. The show was otherwise tight. John energetically rose from the piano bench to bow and goose the roar of the crowd, and venture to the stage’s wings to bask in the adulation. The stadium’s sound was well-balanced. On a scale of Garth Brooks to the Rolling Stones , it was Metallica . Crowd shots were mixed with frequent highlights of shows from decades past.

John’s backing band elevated the vintage vibe. On stage Tuesday were John Mahon and Nigel Olsson (both on drums and backing vocals), the ever-legendary Ray Cooper (percussion), guitar great Davey Johnstone (guitar, backing vocals), Matt Bissonette (bass guitar, vocals) and Kim Bullard (keyboards). Olsson, Cooper and Johnstone have been with John for about 50 years.

(A very Vegas story about Cooper, about a decade ago we sat at adjoining tables for a Santa Fe & The Fat City Horns show at the Lounge at the Palms. Cooper took in the entire show with his head down and eyes closed. I asked him about it afterward. “I only want to hear them,” he said.)

John’s “Cold Heart” duet with Dua Lipa , and a reference to his Britney Spears -collab version of “Hold Me Closer” were saved for the encore (though that song was not performed). “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” backed by video highlights of John’s incredible career, shut it down. Wearing his flashy “Fantastic”-emblazoned jacket, star bowed and waved while being lifted away on an automated platform.

A full night of music and dancing and great energy. Maybe we’ve seen the last of Sir Elton in these parts. Only the Rocket Man knows for sure. But we’ll clear the road clear, should he want to return.

Keys to a meeting

Sir Elton followed through on his promise to connect with Hammond B3 legend Ronnie Foster in Las Vegas. The two keyboard virtuosos met and chatted before Tuesday’s show. Foster posted on social media, “This man really loves music and knows his stuff … Beautiful guy and a great artist.”

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Ronnie Foster (@ronniefos)

John also called out to Foster from the stage in his dedications at the end of the show. Sir Elton had initially sought out Foster for John’s “Rocket Hour” podcast , which broadcast in June. The two chatted at length about Foster’s career and mastery of the instrument. John told Foster he had never been able to play the Hammond to his own standards.

John was especially interested in Foster’s return to Blue Note Records, the label where he began his recording career 50 years ago.The iconic label re-released Foster’s debut album, “Two Headed Freap,” on vinyl in the Blue Note Classic Vinyl Reissue Series.

Cool Hang Alert

On the topic of those who know their way around a show, the great Vegas showman Ronnie Rose plays from 7 p.m.-10 p.m. Monday at Maxan Jazz Sushi & Jazz at 4130 South Decatur Blvd. Keyboardist David K. Matthews from Carlos Santana’s band (among many iconic artists, including Etta James, Tower of Power and Boz Scaggs ) is special guest. Wayne de Silva (sax) Chris Gordan (bass) and Pepe Jimenez (drums) in this band. Big talent. No cover. A $40 F&B minimum, per customer. To to maxanjazz.com for reservations.

‘Tonight is the final night’: Elton John says goodbye to over 50 years of touring with last show on his farewell tour

The Rocket Man is retiring from the road.

Elton John performed what he says was the last show on the final tour of his career Saturday night.

The iconic, award-winning musician took the stage for purportedly the last time ever as a touring artist in Stockholm, Sweden, according to his website.

In the caption for a video posted to his official Instagram Saturday, the British music legend wrote, “What a journey this tour has been and now we find ourselves at the end of it. Tonight is the final night.”

The video includes a clip from a 2018 interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper in which the musician announced his retirement from touring. “It’s the last time that I will be touring and traveling the world,” John says in the clip.

The five-time Grammy winner’s “Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour” kicked off in 2018 and was originally meant to end in 2021 but was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The tour has been publicized as his last after more than five decades on the road.

The tour featured more than 300 shows and was attended by more than 6 million fans across the world, according to John’s Instagram video. The 76-year-old musician headlined the Glastonbury Festival as his final UK stop on his farewell tour.

During his 2018 interview with Cooper, John attributed his retirement from life on the road to his decision to focus on his family. The musician has two sons with husband David Furnish.

“We had children and had changed our lives and in 2015, we sat down with their school schedule and we said I’m going to miss too much of this,” he told Cooper at the time.

He said at the time that although he was done touring, he would continue working on new music.

Adele confronts offensive fan during interaction at latest Vegas show: 'Shut up, alright?'

The "easy on me" singer started pride month off strong.

Ahad Sanwari

Adele is one to tell it how it is when it comes to standing up for the rights of the causes she believes in, and during her ongoing Las Vegas residency Weekends with Adele , she's more candid than ever.

The singer, 36, kicked off Pride month on June 1 with the first of her two concerts for Weekend 43 of the residency, and during a tense moment, let a concertgoer know that she didn't stand for any homophobia at her shows.

During the piano segment of the show, an attendee apparently shouted out "Pride sucks," which led the English songstress to directly address the fan and rebuke him for his homophobic stance.

In a video shared on X, she's seen saying: "Did you come to my [expletive] show and just say that Pride sucks? Are you [expletive] stupid? Don't be so [expletive] ridiculous. If you have nothing nice to say, shut up, alright?"

While clearly exasperated, she quickly turned her attention away from the offensive attendee as the audience snapped and cheered in approval and addressed the others in the audience.

Fans on social media were full of praise for the singer for so boldly shutting him down, leaving comments like: "Imagine ADELE saying this to you oh i would just disappear," and: "I love Adele for this! Why do people love to say cruel things like this? It's so uncalled for and disgusting," as well as: "Adele threw the first brick at stonewall."

After Covid-19 related delays pushed the start of the residency from January 2022 to November 2022, Weekends with Adele debuted to immense critical acclaim and has continued to attract praise for the singer's witty banter, stellar vocals, intimate crowd work, and now her candid stance .

Spanning 100 total shows, the residency is in its home stretch and will finally conclude on November 23, 2024, with 50 weekends in the can, exactly two years after it first began.

Prior to the show, she borrowed a Pride flag from a pair of audience members in exchange for drink tokens and moving them out to the front row, PinkNews reported at the time, and then dedicated the show to the LGBTQ+ community.

She performed her hit "When We Were Young" as the screen behind her was intercut with visuals featuring the Pride colors, and she herself draped the flag around her black gown, motioning fondly to members of the crowd who waved rainbow flags as well.

Adele even had a tender moment when she addressed a fan waving a sign in the crowd. "There was a girl down there that I saw with a sign that said I'm the reason she's alive and that ain't true baby girl, you're the reason you’re alive, I'm so glad that you found comfort in my music."

Anthony Joshua’s representatives hold talks over Watford investment

Financial experts working with two-time heavyweight champion boxer Anthony Joshua have held exploratory talks with Watford over an investment in the club, The Athletic can exclusively reveal.

Although not directly involved in discussions himself Joshua, 34, was approached about the possibility of becoming involved in the Championship club and talks are said to have been at “entry level”.

The proposal that was discussed is undisclosed at this stage, but it’s known that Watford have held discussions with other parties regarding a minority stake in the club. Watford value the club in the region of £150million to £175m ($191m to $223m).

‘AJ’ — as he is commonly known — has a net worth of approximately £150m to £200m ($191m to $254m) according to the 2024 Sunday Times Rich List, and strong connections to the club. He was born at Watford General Hospital next to the club’s Vicarage Road ground, grew up in North Watford on the Meriden Estate and went to school in nearby Kings Langley.

“An investment business which has brought Anthony investment opportunities in the past was approached and held an entry level discussion about an opportunity with Watford Football Club,” a spokesperson for Joshua told  The Athletic . “This was an initial chat without even a discussion over due diligence which so often kills these types of deal.”

While the discussions are an indication that the club is actively seeking new investment, it appears Joshua’s focus — at this stage — remains on his current profession.

“Anthony is not involved and has no plans to be involved. He is fully focused on boxing and has no time at the moment to give to new opportunities outside of his sport. He is a son of Watford and wishes them all the best,” Joshua’s spokesperson added.

Watford — owned by Italian Gino Pozzo since 2012 — have been seeking investment for the last few years and this represents the most high-profile name that has been linked with an opportunity. Sources close to the discussions — who didn’t want to identified to protect relationships — suggested that Joshua’s potential involvement may be as part of a consortium proposition.

Joshua, awarded an OBE in 2018, was world heavyweight champion from 2016 to 2019 and is one of the most recognisable global sports stars with a social media following of 28 million. His commercial pull is significant with current agreements with Under Armour, AP, DAZN, Hugo Boss, JD Sports, Land Rover, Jaguar, Lynx and Lucozade.

He won his most recent heavyweight bout in Saudi Arabia against Francis Ngannou and was ringside to watch Oleksandr Usyk beat Tyson Fury, sat alongside Cristiano Ronaldo.

elton john tour vegas

Winning Olympic gold at London 2012 launched Joshua into the public consciousness. Coincidentally, also part of the Team GB that year was the current Watford head coach Tom Cleverley who competed in the football competition. Joshua spent his formative years playing football — including a spell at St Albans City, where Watford’s under-21 team now play — before taking up boxing aged 18 in 2007.

Prior to winning his first heavyweight title in 2014, he held an open workout in Watford.

“It’s my town,” Joshua said at the time. “It is nice to be back. I’ve still got family and friends based here. It’s great to come back to Watford.”

There was talk at that point of one of his fights taking place at Vicarage Road. “Fighting anywhere appeals to me but Vicarage Road would be the icing on the cake,” he said. “It’s my town and on a nice sunny day, against an opponent people want to see me fight, it would create a great atmosphere in Watford. Hopefully that will happen if I keep doing my job and keep winning.”

He was quickly drawing big crowds in larger arenas like Wembley stadium, where he beat Wladimir Klitschko in 2017 to add the WBA and WBO titles to his IBF crown. Prior to the fight he spoke to Watford’s most famous fan, and former owner, Sir Elton John.

“We spoke to Elton John before the fight. He sent a message, saying he would like to speak to me,” Joshua said at the time. “He’s a Watford man. It felt surreal, Elton John wanting to talk to me. He just wanted to pass on a good luck message as a fellow Watford guy and wish me good luck.”

Joshua’s link to Watford also includes a friendship with the club’s former captain Troy Deeney.

Away from the spotlight Joshua is passionate about local projects in the area. In 2021 he set up a community-interest company called Clean Herts to help young generations.

“Me and the boys grew up in Watford (and) have been doing many things in the community where it’s touched some people and some people have been seeing from a distance, but we want to get more people involved,” he said when it was launched. “We organised (this) foundation … because clean hearts win, and we want to bring that energy into the community.”
