The Eiffel Tower

Cliché it might be, but what would the City of Lights be without the brightest light of all?

Designed by engineer Gustave Eiffel and it's nicknamed La dame de fer , which means the iron lady. Since it’s unveiling for the World Fair in 1889, la Tour Eiffel as it's called in French, has attracted over 200 million visitors. Not bad for the ‘metal asparagus’ as it was so snidely called by its detractors who wanted to tear it down in 1909

If only they could see it today la tour Eiffel today...

Eiffel Tower

Built to in remembrance of the French Revolution, the Eiffel Tower is 324m high, and, until it was overtaken by New York’s Chrysler Building in 1930’s, it was the tallest tower in the world.

The Eiffel tower was not a hit with the Parisians at first, most of them agreeing with William Morris' opinion. When asked why he was at the tower so frequently, designer William Morris exclaimed "Why on earth have I come here? Because it's the only place I can't see it from."

Despite its rocky start, the Eiffel Tower is easily the most recognized and iconic construction in the world.

It gradually worked its way into the hearts of visitors and Parisians alike so these days it doesn’t provoke so much controversy but instead has been transformed into a symbol of modern and elegant Paris.

Practicalities

The Eiffel tower opens 7 days a week, visitors can choose to earn the fabulous view by climbing the stairs or cheat and hop in the elevator. If you choose to walk up, the admission is about 30% less than taking the elevator all the way.

Jules Verne restaurant

In order to avoid the gigantic queues (at worst a 2 hour wait) it is best to arrive early (9am) or late as the sun is going down.

Also in Eiffel tower you will find a café, souvenir shops, an exhibition place and the very exclusive yet delicious Jules Verne restaurant . If you visit late, hang around for the incredibly kitsch yet wonderful light show that lights up the skies of Paris every evening.

If you visit in the good weather, and don’t mind batting away the souvenir sellers, the Champ de Mars is a lovely place to lounge, eat a picnic and enjoy the incredible perspectives of la Tour Eiffel .

Something you didn't know

Back in the 1980s two Kiwis, AJ Hackett and Henry van Asch, met whilst skiing in Wanaka, New Zealand, and discovered that they were both adrenaline junkies.

AJ had recently seen a video of a group called "The Dangerous Sports Club" who were based at Oxford University about a decade before. The video showed the students attempting some experimental jumps inspired by the Vanuatu tribe in the Pacific who had been throwing themselves from a great height with only vines attached to their feet for centuries.

This video of "The Dangerous Sports Club" set AJ's imagination on fire and he convinced Henry that this could be developed further so the two set about developing and testing Bungy cords with the help of Auckland University scientists.

They both agreed the adrenaline rush you got from a Bungy could spark a trend for extreme sports. After testing some cords for their strength, the boys did their first extreme jumps from a ski area gondola in France.

Once the safety of the jumps was confirmed, AJ and Henry decided that they needed to show the public how much faith they had in their newly-created Bungy ropes.

They decided to attract the world's attention by doing a Bungy Jump from the Paris Eiffel Tower in June 1987.

AJ managed to get up the Eiffel Tower and slept there overnight. In the morning, bright and early, he Bungy Jumped down off the tower. The police were waiting and he was arrested only to be released again a few minutes later. The jump became a top news story all over the world and so Bungy took off.

The most famous sights such as impressionist mecca Mont Martre and Montparnasse as well as the equally enchanting but underground Les Marais and Invalides.

The weather in Paris can be unpredictable though. For a few reasons most people will say that the spring (April through June) or fall (September through November) are the best times to visit. In general the weather in paris isn’t too extreme in either direction (too cold or too hot), and prices on things like airfare and hotels aren’t at their peak.

Most international flights land and leave from Charles de Gaulle airport, which is situated 30km (19 miles) north-east of Paris. The two cheapest and fastest ways to get into the city from Paris CDG are by RER and by bus. The RER train from Roissy-CDG to Paris leaves from the train station in Terminal 2.

Traveling on Metro

The Paris metro is without a doubt the fastest and cheapest way of getting around the city, even if it might not be the cleanest. The Paris metro network connects at several points in Paris with the RER, the commuter trains that go from the city center to the suburbs.

Eiffel Tower

The BEST Eiffel Tower Tours

The First floor of the Eiffel Tower is popular among travelers. It contains multiple restaurants, snack bars, and shops. You can easily spend a few hours on the first floor having lunch or drinks. You can also purchase tickets or a tour that includes the first floor with or without elevator access. The stairs will work out your legs but can be more pleasant than a crowded elevator in the hot summer. All of our Eiffel Tower tours will give you access to the first floor and we recommend spending time there during your day visit to have a refreshing beverage! The second floor is the most popular and provides stunning views. If you are highly athletic, you could walk up to the second floor but it is recommended to use the elevator for most people. On your way down, the stairs can be less crowded and easy from the second floor. The summit is the most desired floor and the hardest to get tickets for. We run an Eiffel Tower Summit tour which you'll want to book far in advance if you are to reserve spots.

Book tours and skip the Eiffel Tower lines with plenty of start times to choose from!

Should I take an Eiffel Tower Tour?

The Eiffel Tower is a megamonument in Paris, which means huge crowds and difficulty getting tickets. Tours take the guesswork out and local guides will make the experience more memorable. The tower platforms are complex and at times difficult to navigate. A guided experience improves everything!

Does every tour include a river cruise?

Many tours include river cruises, but you should read the inclusions to be sure.

Which Eiffel Tower tours do we recommend?

These are some of our favorites.

Privileged Access Eiffel Tower Night Tour with Seine River Cruise

Twilight Magic: Eiffel Tower Summit Tour with Seine River Cruise

Eiffel Tower Climbing Tour with Summit Access (Staff Favorite!)

Paris in a Day Tour (Eiffel from outside)

Do you need to walk the entire way up to the summit with the Eiffel Tower climbing tour ?

No. You walk up to the first and second floors. From there, you can take an elevator to the summit .

Are there tours where you visit the Eiffel Tower Summit without climbing?

Is a tour of the Eiffel Tower worth it?

That obviously depends on your interests and budget, but Eiffel Tower tours average a 4.7/5 rating which means most travelers feel they are a great value and worth it!

What is the best part about visiting the Eiffel Tower?

The views are very cool but the overall experience is great. There are shoppes inside, restaurants, and even a champagne bar at the summit!

How long should we spend at the Eiffel Tower?

Depending on how many levels you visit and if you'll get a meal or drink, 90 minutes should be the minimum amount of time. We do not recommend rushing through this experience. Explore, get a drink, eat if you're hungry, and try to stay in the moment.

Who won the Biden-Trump debate? Biden's freeze draws age concerns

eiffel tour de

WASHINGTON – Presidential debates are always about expectations. And Thursday’s verbal sparring match between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump was no exception.

The stakes were highest for Biden who, at age 81, was already battling perceptions he is too elderly for a second term. Meanwhile, Trump, 78, was facing concerns from moderate and swing voters about his at times bombastic style.

The biggest moment of the night came early, when Biden froze for several seconds while answering a question about the economy.

That – and all of the many other gaffes of the evening − will be replayed on cable news shows and shared thousands of times on social media for weeks to come. But how will it influence the 2024 election?

Here’s a breakdown of who came out on top and who fell short in the immediate aftermath.

Prep for the polls: See who is running for president and compare where they stand on key issues in our Voter Guide

Trump showed more energy than Biden

Experts USA TODAY spoke with said they saw sharp differences in the stamina of the two candidates on stage Thursday night, and they said Biden’s low-energy demeanor could hurt him for months to come.

In one of the most defining moments of the debate, Biden took a prolonged pause and froze while answering a question about the economy. After stuttering, the president continued, but began talking about COVID-19 and Medicare.

Even some of Biden's Democratic supporters felt his freeze on stage and his somewhat wooden performance tipped the scales in Trump's favor.

Trump sought to highlight Biden’s slower responses, at one point saying, “I really don't know what he said at the end of this, and I don't think he knows what he said, either."

Thomas Whalen, a presidential historian and professor at Boston University, said Biden was “looking his age,” while Trump was “more controlled and sticking to his talking points.”

Aaron Kall, director of Debate for the University of Michigan Debate Program, suggested Biden’s pauses “could spur endless news cycles about (his) age and fitness to serve another term in office.”

New debate format aimed to decrease chaos

If seeing Trump and Biden on stage together again didn’t provide enough deja vu, their matchup also marked the first time since 1960 that a presidential debate was held without a live audience . The last time was when John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon clashed.

The format was designed to eliminate immediate reactions to candidates’ remarks. Aaron Kall, director of debate for the University of Michigan, suggested it forced genuine responses rather than scripted statements from the candidates.

Rather than rely on audience energy, Trump and Biden had to “trust their guts and instincts and previous debate experiences,” Kall said.

The  use of muted microphones in the debate also nearly eliminated the type of candidate crosstalk that has plagued past debates, including most recently during the GOP primary.

Georgia voters are central focus

Trump and Biden weren’t the only ones in the spotlight Thursday night. All-important Georgia voters were, too.

The location of the debate at CNN’s studios in Atlanta underscored Georgia’s role as crucial swing state in the election and served as a reminder that the candidate's messages − and bickering − will echo far beyond the stage.

Biden won Georgia by just under 12,000 votes in 2020. But recent polling this year has shown Trump with a slight edge over his competitor in the key battleground territory.

And the side-by-side comparison of the two candidates Thursday could very well sway the minds of undecided voters in the state. It was one of few opportunities the public will have to hear from the two men directly and judge for themselves who is the better pick for the country.

Not to mention that the location gave both candidates an opportunity to campaign around the Atlanta suburbs. Trump called in to a local barbershop on Wednesday to talk with a group his campaign called the Black American Business Leaders Barbershop Roundtable. And Biden’s campaign said the president planned to attend watch parties across the city after the debate to talk with voters.

Also of significance: The debate occurred only a few miles from the jail where Trump was booked last year on charges related to claims that he conspired to overturn the 2020 election.

A major money boost for Democrats and Republicans

Both major parties are expected to raise big dollars off Thursday’s affair. Similarly well-watched events have brought in the green for the two candidates.

Biden’s campaign said he raised $10 million in the 24 hours after the State of the Union address. After Trump’s felony conviction in his New York hush money trial, his campaign said it raised $34.8 million in small-dollar donations.

And both groups we’re leaning into their fundraising.

Hours before the debate began, Biden’s team sent out a message telling supporters that he was “counting on” them to donate at least $30.

“Tens of thousands of new supporters stepped up following my debates against Trump in 2020. And tonight, can’t be any different,” the message said.

The Democratic Party of Georgia also hosted a watch party charging $24 per advance ticket. Former Georgia Sen. Kelly Loeffler was similarly hosting a high-dollar event for Trump the night of the debate.

Biden’s campaign said it had its best grassroots fundraising hours of the entire campaign leading up to the debate.

False claims abound

Ashley Koning, director of the Rutgers Eagleton Center for Public Interest Polling, argued that “facts and truth” were the biggest losers of the night.

Both Trump and Biden made false comments throughout the debate that largely went unchecked by the moderators.

Trump repeated claims that the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol was former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s fault. Trump claimed he offered Pelosi “10,000 soldiers” to stop the attack. Pelosi’s office has said, however, that she never received such an officer and that she wouldn’t have had the power to refuse either way.

The former real estate mogul also claimed the U.S. southern border is the most dangerous place in the world. There is no evidence to suggest this.

Biden also made incorrect claims. At one point, he claimed he was “the only president this century ... that doesn’t have any troops dying anywhere in the world.”

In 2021, during Biden’s presidency, 13 U.S. service members were killed in a suicide bombing attack in Afghanistan as thousands tried to flee the Taliban’s takeover of the country.

RFK and third-party candidates absent from the conversation

Noticeably absent from the CNN stage? Robert F. Kennedy Jr .

Kennedy didn’t meet the qualifications for the debate, which required candidates to appear on a “sufficient number of state ballots to reach the 270 electoral vote thresholds to win the presidency” and receive at least 15% in four qualifying national polls, according to CNN.

In a three-way matchup with Biden and Trump, Kennedy receives 10.7% of the vote, according to a Real Clear Politics average of polling .

Kennedy counterprogrammed the prime-time debate by answering the same questions as Biden and Trump live on a social media stream and on his website. But he remained largely out of sight for most voters on a night that centered on the two major party candidates.

As the world turns its gaze to Paris for the 2024 Summer Olympics, the City of Light dazzles with more than just the grandeur of international athletic competition. While the Games may be the headline act, there are plenty of other compelling reasons to visit Paris this summer. The French capital beckons travelers with a promise of memorable experiences that extend beyond squeezing into a restaurant on the crowded Place du Tertre in Montmartre or shopping on the Champs-Elysées. So, whether you're going to be in town for the Olympics or just planning a leisurely visit, here are ten offbeat experiences to explore beyond the basics.

1. Embark On A Michelin Star Dinner Cruise

The view from a table onboard the Don Juan II, Yachts de Paris, during a dinner cruise on the River ... [+] Seine.

Navigating the plethora of dinner cruises on the Seine can be a daunting task. For those looking to indulge, there are a few standout options that guarantee an unforgettable evening. Among these, the floating restaurant helmed by three-Michelin-star chef Frédéric Anton, who's also at the Jules Verne at the top of the Eiffel Tower, is a truly magical dining experience. The Don Juan II, part of the Yachts de Paris fleet, is a fully fledged restaurant with only a handful of tables, which earned a star in 2023. Guests enjoy a cozy atmosphere enhanced by mahogany paneling, plush carpets, and luxurious Pierre Frey fabrics. Departing at sundown, diners are treated to dazzling views of Paris’ iconic landmarks, from the illuminated Notre Dame Cathedral to the glittering Eiffel Tower, all while savoring a five-course seasonal menu featuring delicacies like creamy stracciatella topped with caviar and succulent langoustine. Guests can also step up on deck, providing the perfect vantage point to see the Eiffel Tower in all its sparkling glory at sundown.

2. Unwind On an Urban Retreat At A Secret Paris Location

Retreats in Paris and beyond for groups.

While most people flock to Paris for its iconic landmarks and world-renowned cuisine, there’s an alternative way to experience the City of Lights that goes beyond the typical tourist track. Enter Reset Paris , a bespoke retreat service founded by former lawyer Eglantine Sir. Drawing from her career, Sir understands the crucial need for relaxation and rejuvenation for people in high-powered roles. It's why she launched, Reset Paris offers exclusive one-day or longer retreats in secret locations such as hidden mansion houses surrounded by gardens within the city and spots on the outskirts. These retreats, designed for both groups of friends and corporate teams, provide a holistic edge to a weekend away or team-buildings, featuring top experts in Chinese medicine, including shiatsu to Qui Gong practitioners. Sir can also organize conferences and seminars on various topics, from health to wellness, as well as more business-focused areas. By dedicating a day or more to this unique experience, visitors can discover a side of Paris that nurtures body, mind and spirit.

Black people’s responses to trump’s notion of ‘black jobs’, apple’s vision pro is amazing but nobody wants one, 3. spend the evening inside a prince’s mansion.

Two-star chef Christophe Pelé helms Le Clarence inside a 19th century townhouse in Paris.

While Paris is full of magnificent buildings and private hôtel particuliers (mansion houses), you rarely get to dine in one. At Le Clarence , a restaurant inside a renovated 1882 marvel, guests get to experience a palatial setting while feasting on two-star chef Christophe Pelé's cuisine.

Owned by the Prince of Luxembourg, who also presides over the prestigious Bordeaux wine-producing estates of Haut-Brion, La Mission Haut-Brion, and Quintus under the Domaine Clarence Dillon banner, Le Clarence is his endeavor to bring a taste of Bordeaux to Paris. Bordeaux is one of France’s premier wine regions, and at Le Clarence, guests can savor a wide selection of Domaine Clarence Dillon wines alongside exquisite dishes crafted by chef Pelé.

The restaurant's opulent setting spans several floors with salons to rent for events, connected by a grand marble staircase, where guests can enjoy pre-dinner drinks amid lavish decor featuring objets d’art and crystal chandeliers. The main dining room, adorned with sumptuous woodwork, tapestries, antique furniture, plush flower-patterned carpets, and bookcases of works, evokes the Age of Enlightenment.

Chef Pelé meticulously whips up dishes that change daily according to season but also his mood and who his guests are on any given day. Being from Brittany, his focus is often fish. Standout dishes among many include the starter of snacked langoustine with sesame sauce, topped by red oxalis flowers with rhubarb sauce and pearls of caviar with Vesuve peas and fleshy turbot fish with daikon mains. You can go back time and time again because you'll never have the same thing twice, even in a week, ensuring a continually captivating dining experience.

4. Bed Down At A Floating Hotel On The River

Offseine, a hotel where beds and the restaurant look out onto the River Seine.

While it's tempting to stay somewhere on the beaten track, the city's more under-the-radar areas put a fresh spin on the Paris experience. For instance, swap a conventional hotel stay in the thick of the Marais or Saint-Germain-des-Prés for a night or two onboard the OFF Paris Seine , a four-star floating hotel in the less trodden 13th district. Right on the water, the hushed shared spaces and 58 rooms all come with glittering river views and the contemporary high rises lined up along the quays.

Watching the light change from dawn till dusk from this hotel boat feels surprisingly bucolic making it an experience like no other in the city. At sunset, the beachside chic restaurant, encased in glass walls and with its own little pool, is perfect for having cocktails followed by dinner, while watching boats glide by and the metro zipping across in the distance. In summer, the area, which is close to the Cité de la Mode, a luminescent green Jakob + MacFarlane designed fashion and design hub with nightlife venues, comes alive as bars and restaurants set up at the water's edge, drawing locals who come to lounge in stripy deckchairs set up along the canal banks. For the Olympics, the hotel will host a sports themed photography exhibition (until 31st August), masterclasses, and DJ nights.

5. Slip Through The Portal To Downtown Kyoto

Hakuba at the Cheval Blanc Hotel in Paris.

Paris is one of those capital cities whose dining scene extends far beyond traditional classics, reflecting the city's rich cultural diversity. While you can still find top-end establishments serving excellent steak-frites and decadent seafood platters, the city is now a culinary melting pot, with chefs from around the globe offering a range of exquisite cuisines.

Japanese chefs, in particular, have made a significant impact on the city over the past decade, securing spots in the Michelin rankings. One such chef is Takuya Watanabe, renowned for his Jin restaurant, where he earned a star. He continues to impress at his new venue, Hakuba , inside the exclusive Cheval Blanc Hotel tacked on th eback of the Samaritaine right on the Seine River. Here, he immerses guests in the low-lit ambiance reminiscent of an old-town Kyoto kaiseki restaurant. The setting of traditional Nichinichi Japanese furniture crafted from solid wood, adds to the authenticity and elegance of the dining experience.

The culinary journey begins with a broth and nori seaweed jam, followed by a refined selection of sashimis, including a trio of saba (young mackerel) with horseradish in seaweed consommé enlivened by tosazu jelly, sashimis of toro, cucumber, watercress, and shiitake, and an impressive gambon. There are also noodles with peppery seaweed, shiitake broth, clams to finish. Chef Takuya Watanabe, alongside assistant chef Naoki, meticulously prepare each dish from behind the counter, handing guests sushi delicately molded one by one.

A standout is the sake-flambéed abalone on tender rice and red mullet served two ways. Watanabe's commitment to quality shines through in his impeccable ingredients, from seafood like gambon, abalone, red sea bream, and toro, to Akitacomachi rice, each undergoing specialized preparations. Sommeliers well versed in the art of saké and wine-making are on hand to recommend some of the best tipples rounding off the experience. Occasionally, head chef Arnaud Donckele from the hotel's three-star Plénitude and master pastry chef Maxime Frédéric join Watanabe, combining their savoir-faire, enhancing the already extraordinary experience.

6. Explore Paris' Art Scene With An Insider

Alexander Weinress, founder of The Seen Paris / The iconic staircase to Perrotin Gallery in the ... [+] Marais, Paris.

Instead of visiting Paris’ crowded museums, try exploring the city’s galleries, in areas ranging from the elegant Marais to artsy Belleville. Here, you'll find the work of many internationally renowned artists as well as up-and-coming talents without the hassle of long lines, often having the opportunity to view the art without the crowds. Some of the city's galleries are among the chicest spots to know like Emmanuel Perrotin and Almine Rech. Occasionally, you might even encounter the artists themselves as they visit pop in to check on their exhibitions. If you're unsure of where to begin, consider reaching out to Paris art guide, Californian transplant Alexandra Weinress . She offers personalized tours in both English and French, tailored to your interests, and can also suggest enjoyable stops along the way, such as lunch at one of her preferred brasseries.

7. Wake Up To A Proper Breakfast

A hearty breakfast at L'Entente, Le British Brasserie in central Paris.

Instead of opting for the usual croissants and baguette breakfast, book a table at Paris' elegant L'Entente, le British Brasserie . While brunch spots are increasingly popular in Paris, they aren't deeply ingrained in French culture as breakfast is in England, a concept the London-born owner Oliver Woodhead brought to Paris seven years ago. At L'Entente, you can enjoy a full English breakfast on both Saturdays and Sundays until 4 PM—a rare find in Paris, where brunch typically ends by 2 PM on Sundays and is often less substantial. Located in the 2nd arrondissement, near the Bourse neighborhood, this spot feels like an embassy of British culture. On the menu are dishes inspired by British traditions and crafted with French produce, all except for the Lea & Perrins brown sauce and Coleman's mustard. During the week, tuck into classics like crunchy fish and chips with tartare sauce or venison pie. You'll usually find the owner greeting diners like his personal guests and offering them wines he's found at friends' vineyards, making this spot an irresistible go-to.

8. Reset With Reiki, But Make It Dior

The Dior spa at the Cheval Blanc with a 30-meter pool.

Originating in Japan, Reiki is an alternative healing practice where the practitioner places their hands on the body to realign energy within the seven chakras. This holistic method treats the mind, body, and spirit, promoting deep relaxation, peace, security, and well-being, with reputed miraculous effects on various disorders. Unlike typical spa treatments, Reiki does not involve lotions, potions, or rigid protocols, making it a very rare offering in luxury hotel spas. Breaking tradition, Cheval Blanc Paris' Dior spa has recently introduced Reiki, featuring 75-90 minute Dioreiki sessions that combine subtle energy work and semi-precious stones, offering guests profound relaxation and reinstating that mystical connection to the universe.

9. Stay Where You Can Have The Eiffel Tower To Yourself

The view from a room at the Shangri-La Paris.

Where do you get the best view of the Eiffel Tower? It's a question travelers often ask when planning a trip. The truth is there are lots of spots from which to get a picture-perfect view of the Grande Dame. But there is one spot that's hard to beat: the Shangri-La Paris hotel. A handful of rooms here have terraces from which to watch the light change over the rooftops, including a unique, unobstructed, vantage point of the Eiffel tower seen from an angle as opposed to head on. The hotel staff can set up meals on the terrace, or a bottle of champagne to be sipped as the tower's lights dazzles at sundown every hour on the hour. Having this big city view to yourself throughout your stay is one of the most special experiences you can have in Paris, but book early as these rooms are in high demand.

10. Get Behind The Korean Food Trend

A Korean meal at Mojju Paris.

These last few years, the city's truly opened up to cuisines from all over the globe, with foreign chefs nabbing top spots on dining lists and earning a few Michelin stars. No longer relegated to street food, international cuisines have blossomed into a multi-tiered scene. In the last couple of years, Korean food's been picking up momentum with chefs like Esu Lee on the bistronomy scene, who's been showcasing his creative high-culture-meets-low-culture cooking at various pop-ups in town and Ji-Hye Park at the higher end of the scale at Oma (Château des Fleurs hotel). More recently, French chef Thibault Sombardier, launched Mojju as a tribute to Korean cooking, near the Champs de Mars, where the focus is on grilled meat and fish served with an array of side dishes from cold soba noodles to spicy kimchi. Adding to the growing offering, newcomer Sétopa ( Se oul To Pa ris) opened its doors in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, and is helmed by two-star chefs Mingoo Kang, of Mingles Seoul, and Chang-Ho Shin of Joo Ok restaurant fame. With their latest venture, the duo is poised to elevate Korean cuisine to new heights on the Parisian dining scene.
