The 5 Best Drivable RVs in 2021

drivable travel trailers

#1. 2021 Leisure Wonder Rear Twin Bed

About the Leisure Wonder: The Leisure Wonder is a Ford Transit-based Class C RV. It packs a lot into a manageable-sized vehicle. Coming in at under 25 feet, this drivable RV has a fully private bedroom and dry bathroom, two things not often seen in this size category. The unique swing-away table features two leaves, giving you plenty of tabletop space for large meals or getting work done remotely. You’ll even get ample counter space in the beautiful galley kitchen.

Stand Out Features: Often, smaller drivable RVs such as this lack storage, but not this RV. It makes great use of the available space for storage and living. Two deep under-bed storage areas replace overhead hanging storage, which opens up the sleeping area substantially. Plus, you can turn the water pump on and off from the bathroom. There’s nothing worse than taking a quick mid-travel bathroom break only to realize the water pump isn’t on.

MSRP: About $120,835-$132,000

#2. 2021.5 Pleasure Way Tofino

About the Pleasure Way Tofino: Coming in at 17 feet 9 inches, this drivable RV is ready to take you anywhere you want to go. The Tofino comes mounted on a Ram ProMaster 1500 chassis. While small, it comes packed with cutting-edge technology. The Tofino is going to keep you charged with features such as two 100Ah lithium coach batteries, a 2,000-watt inverter, multiplex wiring, a touchscreen control panel with a remote, and a real-time amperage meter. With more than 70 cubic feet of rear cargo storage, you’ll be able to bring along supplies for your adventures. The roof rack offers even more storage options.

Stand Out Features: A manual pop-top reveals the 49 x 72-inch overhead bunk, creating a second sleeping space while opening up the galley and living area. This design gives you additional headroom in addition to an extra sleeping space.

MSRP: $74,750

#3. Holiday Rambler Armada 44LE

About the Armada 44LE: For those looking for a spacious Class A, the Armada 44LE is an excellent choice. With 44-feet of length, there’s plenty of room to move. This model features four slideouts, extending your living space. There are two and a half bathrooms in the Armada 44LE.

Stand Out Features: One of the first things you’ll notice when you walk into the Armada 44LE is the abundant seating. You’ll have no problem hosting guests with two couches and a full dinette. Moving to the kitchen, you’ll be impressed with the amount of usable space.

MSRP: About $480,000

#4. 2021 Thor Gemini 23TE

About the Thor Gemini 23TE: The Thor Gemini 23TE is 23-feet-6-inches of adventure waiting for you. This compact drivable RV is great for getting you wherever you want to go in style. This RV features everything you’d expect in larger, more expensive units but fits into a more manageable size with a smaller budget. Built on a Ford Transit chassis, this RV is going to stand the test of time. The Thor Gemini 23TE isn’t leaving technology behind with many great modern-day features such as a 100-watt solar panel with a controller.

Stand Out Features: In a drivable RV of this size, you normally find a wet bathroom with a shower and toilet in one shared space. The Thor Gemini 23TE gives you a full dry bathroom with a separate toilet and shower. This is a great feature that many consider a must-have. This unit makes great use of space by having the living space dual as the sleeping area. The living room features a useful murphy bed that will pull down when it’s time to call it a night. By day, the space transforms into a spacious living area.

MSRP: About $120,000

#5. 2021 4WD Winnebago Revel

About the Winnebago Revel: The 4WD Winnebago Revel is exactly what you need for boondocking in places many others can’t go with their RVs. You can stay off-grid for longer in comfort. This unit features two 125-amp hour LiFePO batteries that are monitorable via Bluetooth. The Hydronic Heating System gives reliable, quiet heating that you control through an LED touchscreen.

Stand Out Features: If you’re ready for an off-roading adventure, the 4WD Winnebago Revel is the drivable RV for you. It sits on a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis powered by a three-liter turbo diesel engine with 4WD, allowing you to take your journey off-road. The useful power lift bed converts your living space into a garage featuring additional storage. From here, you’ll be able to access your lithium system and freshwater tank easily.

MSRP: $185,838

Regardless of which class of RV you go with, drivable RVs make travel efficient and fun. They come packed full of features and are easy to set up, and they don’t require a particular tow vehicle. Do any of these drivable RVs tempt you to head over to your local dealership?

Towable vs Drivable RV: Everything You Need to Know

By: Author The Drivin' & Vibin' Team

Posted on February 15, 2020

RVs fall into two basic categories, towable & drivable. Each of these two styles have many sub-groups within.

Today we’re breaking it down into easy-to-understand terms to help assist you in your RV research.

We’ll teach you about all the RV styles, the benefits & challenges of each and the price differences. Additionally, we surveyed over 500 RV enthusiasts about their thoughts on the age of question – towable or drivable RV?

Let’s dive in!

Towable RV Types

While you may have a specific idea about what a towable RV is. You may be surprised about the variation that exists in the RV market today.

Travel Trailer

A travel trailer is the most common type of RV, and according to ‘yearly new RV shipments’ it’s the most popular new RV type to buy.

Travel trailers are pulled by standard truck or SUV hitches and vary greatly in size & price.

In addition to a sleeping area, they usually have bathrooms with showers and full kitchens. Here’s a list of the best, smallest travel trailers with bathrooms .

airstream-dreams_t20_JlZYw9

A 5th wheel is unique for a few reasons. Primarily, rather than hitching to the rear end of a truck, 5th wheels connect to a hitch inside the truck bed.

This allows for easier towing, better weight distribution and more flexibility with floor plans.

5th wheels can be single, double or triple axle and measure over 40 feet long.

Pop Up Camper

A pop up camper is like the basic travel travel, except it has collapsible walls that “pop up” when in use.

The pop up functionality is great for storing these trailers in a residential garage. They’re also great for weekend camping trips.

However, most often pop up campers don’t have bathrooms and showers. In 2020 there are some pretty epic pop ups, though ( check the top 5 out right here ).

Pop Up Campers

A tear drop is a tiny travel trailer. In most cases, they can be towed by sedans and light weight SUVs.

Tear drop trailers are perfect for minimalist campers who don’t need many amenities. These trailers never have built in bathrooms and rarely have full kitchens.

The Polydrop trailer , pictured below, is a great example of a modern tear drop trailer.

Truck Camper

While a truck camper doesn’t have wheels, it’s “towed” in the bed of a truck. These campers sit inside the truck bed to create a livable space.

Even though they’re seemingly small on the outside, they quite often have built in bathrooms and kitchens.

Drivable RV Types

Just like towable RVs, drivable RVs come in all shapes and sizes. Additionally, the class types can be pretty confusing!

A Class A RV is the traditional motorhome. These RVs have the notoriously large window in the front and gives you many comforts of residential living.

They look box-y, which means they don’t handle well in high winds.

Class A’s also range greatly in price. They start around $50,000 and can go into the million dollar range. Here’s what a $1.5 million dollar Class A looks like .

Tampa RV Show

A Class B RV is most often associated with Van Life. These are large vans with the luxuries of an RV.

While they usually have a wet bath and kitchen, the interior space can be pretty tight. The bed is often transition-able – meaning it’s a couch in the daytime.

Here’s an example of the Leisure Van Class B with a murphy bed .

2020 vw camper van

The Class C, despite its name, is actually the middle ground between a Class A and Class B. These are classic-looking RVs that you see on the road quite often. They have a van style front with an RV style rear.

Class C RVs are also the most popular type of rental RV. You can see in the picture below what it looks like.

rv-at-the-san-rafael-swell_t20_RwOzBk

Super C RVs are the newest addition to the bunch. They have all the luxuries of Class A motorhomes, but the safety features of Class C RVs.

Super Cs look like a semi-truck from the front and a motorhome from the rear. They can tow massive amounts of cargo behind and inside the unit.

Here’s the best Super C RVs in 2020 .

Towable vs Drivable RV Characteristics

We asked over 500 RV enthusiast, “When deciding between towable and drivable, which is your top concern?”

The results were interesting to say the least.

TOWABLE VS DRIVABLE

Of all the options, RVers considered safety the least important deciding factor when choosing between drivable and towable.

We think that Class Cs and Super Cs are among the safest due to the front engine and overall drivability.

However, if you have a powerful truck, most of the towable RVs will be safe. 5th Wheels handle better on the interstate. Small RVs like a tear drop and pop up should be overall safer than a traditional travel trailer.

Maneuverability

Maneuverability was the most popular deciding factor when deciding between towable and drivable RVs.

Travel trailers and 5th wheel may be challenging to tow in a tight area like a gas station or windy mountain roads.

Class As and Super Cs are long and tall, making maneuverability challenging.

For easy access to all areas, tear drops, truck campers and Class Bs are your best bet.

RV Trends

There’s no doubt here! Class As, Super Cs and 5th wheels will offer you the most comfort. Manufacturers make luxury versions of each of these RV types.

The trade-off is maneuverability.

As a rule of thumb, drivable RVs cost more. This makes sense because you’re buying an engine and drive train.

However, you must consider the cost of a tow vehicle if you want a towable RV. 5th wheels require large, heavy duty trucks that often cost a pretty penny.

Class Bs, despite being smaller, often charge a premium. In 2020, these RVs are in high demand and the price reflects that.

As far as floor plan diversity goes, 5th wheels will give you the most options. 5th wheels also have many toy hauler floor plans.

The smaller the RV, whether drivable or towable, will offer less floor plans.

Additionally, Class A motorhomes are limited by the front driving area. This means the living room and kitchen will always be in the front.

Towable vs Drivable RV | Biggest Challenges

No matter how you slice it, there will be challenges. In our survey we asked RV owners to share their unique challenges associated with each RV style.

Towable RV Challenges

  • Fitting everyone comfortably inside the truck on the drive.
  • Hitching up and setup.
  • Getting gas in tight gas stations.
  • sway, wind, and nerves while driving
  • No generator, smaller tanks and a truck big enough to tow the size we want.
  • Having to buy a Truck.
  • Turning in heavy traffic

Drivable RV Challenges

  • If it breaks down, you lose your home while it is being fixed.
  • Lack of a car if you don’t want to tow one when you arrive at your destination.
  • Cost, space and inability to detach in a repair scenario
  • Finding places to stop where getting in or out is possible without having to back up as we tow a car.
  • Complex expensive mechanical systems
  • Initial cost
  • The gas bill

I enjoy your blog but I have to tell you that you are wrong on class A motorhomes. I have a 1A licence and pulled trailers including trains all over North America. Now I’ve also towed campers, had class C and two class A motorhomes pulling a vehicle behind. Our motorhome we’ve had for over 12 years. It is a 2002 Fleetwood Revolution 40’ diesel pusher. This motorhome handles excellent in heavy wind. No problems unless people oversteer. A better thing you should have on your blog is how people can get out of a wreck when their trailer starts to dance or Sway. This can happen for numerous reasons. I’m surprised NO One ever trains people how to do this. Instead they put on brakes and usually roll their trailer. This can happen even passing semi’s. It is so simple. If this happens. Gently hold steering. Don’t hit brakes. Keep throttle the same. Reach down to electric trailer brake. Gently slide manual brake lever (on all electric brakes). Most people don’t even know they have manual slider usually on top or front. As you gently apply brake to trailer it will jerk your trailer back straight. Then gently let off throttle and apply vehicle brakes which will apply to trailer and vehicle. That is what semi drivers do especially on ice if pulling train Two trailers A Or B or super A or Super B. If you see semi going down road and trailers are whipping back and forth or buckling an experienced semi driver will gently apply trailer brake to trailers only while keeping same throttle to jerk trailers straight. This technique saves lives. I’ve had to do this on my own trailers sometime heading camping in bad side wind passing semi. I’ve NEVER hit the ditch and can drive in any weather. Please share this info to save lives. So no trailers and trucks end up flipped over in ditch. Thank you. Also always gentle on steering, throttle and brake especially on ice.

Excellent advice! Some dear friends almost lost their lives as they had completely emptied out their travel trailer to trade it in.. encountered high winds and buffeting.. noticed the trailer begin to jump and sway.. tapped the brakes to slow down and subsequently lost control and flipped into the highway ditch.. miraculously everyone survived as all family members wore their seatbelts!

' src=

Thanks for this comparative information. We should understand where we have to use towing and transport our vehicle.

' src=

Good points.. can you do a poll of how many rvers prefer travel trailer vs class c( not van type) and why . I’m a 64 y/o single female and am undecided which option would be safer and easier to go with.. thanks and love your videos

RV Types & RV Classes: Types of RVs Explained (Pros & Cons)

drivable travel trailers

What’s all the hype about RV types? There are 10+ RV classes and types of RVs… and if you don’t know how to tell the difference, you won’t know how to start the RV shopping process.

In this article, we’re diving into all the RV types to help you have a better understanding of exactly what kind of RVs and campers you see on the roads… And so you know how to start looking for the RV of your dreams.

Each RV type and RV class features a pros and cons list – these are all important things to consider if you’re in the market for an RV. Let’s get started.

Table of Contents

What Are the Types of RVs & RV Classes?

  • Class B RVs
  • Bus Conversions
  • Fifth Wheels
  • Travel Trailers
  • Truck Campers
  • Toy Haulers
  • Teardrop Campers

Drivable RVs vs Towable RVs

Drivable RVs are called motorhomes and these types of RVs are built on motorhome, truck, and van chassis depending on the class. Motorhomes are the only types of RVs that are designated with a “Class” name – Class A, B, C, and so on.

Towable RVs come in several kinds: travel trailers, fifth wheels, truck campers, pop up campers, teardrop trailers, and hybrids. These types of campers attach to a vehicle (called a tow vehicle) on the bumper or in the truck bed.

Demystifying RV Types – Why All the Differentiation?

Why are there so many RV types? It’s simple: because there are many different personality styles, budgets, travel styles, preferences, and needs.

While some people might want to RV in luxury in a massive, motorized drivable coach, others might prefer the back-to-nature feel of a small tent camper. And others still might prefer to travel with the creature comforts yet compact size of a small travel trailer.

Every RV type has pros and cons. There is not a single RV type that is better than any other… RVing is a highly individual activity, so what works for one person might not work for others!

A Quick Note about RV Names to Clear Up Confusion

There are a lot of words that are used interchangeably to describe RVs. While some think “RV” only applies to the kind you can drive, the truth is that they’re all considered RVs.

RV and camper can be used to describe any kind of RV.

Travel trailers are also sometimes called bumper-pulls or camper trailers, and fifth wheels are also called “fivers”.

Pop up campers are also called tent campers or tent trailers. And truck campers are sometimes called “slide in campers” or “backpack campers”.

Types of Drivable RVs

There are 3 main types of drivable RVs: class A, B, and C . In this section, we’ll dive into each of these main types. We’re also going over subtypes and bus conversions – because you’ll see a lot of those on the road too.

Class A Motorhomes

RV classes: class A motorhome

Class A motorhomes are the quintessential RV – this type of RV is probably what comes to mind for many people when they hear the words “RV” or “motorhome”.

These RVs are built on a special motorhome chassis and often look like a bus or a box on wheels. Class A motorhomes typically have a flat front and a flat rear and truly do look like a giant rectangular box on wheels.

This type of RV is a very popular RV type for full-time living. They come in many different lengths starting around 30 feet and going all the way up to 40 feet or longer. These RVs can come with or without slides and typically all have the same general layout.

Pros and Cons of Class A RVs

  • Most spacious of the motorhome types.
  • Most storage of all motorhome types.
  • Large windshield and high seating offers a great view of the road and campsites.
  • Many amenities of home.
  • Driving these RVs can be intimidating.
  • Tall height requires careful trip planning.
  • Very expensive.
  • Campsites may be limited depending on the overall length of your RV.

Class B RVs

RV classes: class B RV

Class B RVs are built on van chassis – these are the typical van conversion RVs. The difference with DIY campervan conversions and class B RVs is that class B RVs are built by RV manufacturers.

Class B RVs are the smallest of all drivable RV types and as such, they are easy to drive and maneuver. They’re very nimble and most can fit in a regular parking space, so getting around with these is no problem!

These little RVs are built with every inch in mind – there is no wasted space in a class B. Depending on the size of the RV, class B RVs can have:

  • A bed space
  • A dining area
  • A kitchen area with stove, sink, and refrigerator
  • A small bathroom or wet bath with toilet and shower

These are popular for solo travelers or couples who want to hit the road but not be bogged down by a large RV.

Pros and Cons of Class B RVs

  • Smallest and most nimble of the drivable RV types.
  • Best on gas.
  • Floor plans have very efficient use of space.
  • Easy to store due to their small size.
  • Most expensive RV type by square footage.
  • Very small interior living and storage space.
  • Very small holding tanks.
  • Not all class B RVs have a bathroom or toilet.

Class B+ RVs

A B+ RV is a class B RV with more: a bigger size and more amenities.

Most class B+ RVs toe the line with small Class C RVs. These RVs don’t have a cabover space, but they offer more interior space, larger holding tanks, and more creature comforts.

  • Larger than class B RVs in all aspects: floor plan, holding tanks, storage, etc.
  • More expensive than regular class B RVs.

Class C RVs

RV classes: class C RV

Class C RVs are built on a truck chassis and have a truck-like cab. You can tell a class C RV on the road by the signature cab-over area. The cab-over area is usually a bed, but in some RVs it serves as extra storage space or an entertainment center.

Class C RVs are the middle-of-the-road motorhome type: they’re not as long or as tall as Class A RVs, but they’re much bigger than Class B RVs.

These RV types are comfortable to drive and come in many different lengths. You’ll find them with slides or without, and they can have many of the amenities you’ll find in larger Class A motorhomes.

Pros and Cons of Class C RVs

  • Typically the least expensive of the motorhome types.
  • Decent amount of interior and exterior storage.
  • Wide variety of lengths and brands available.
  • Comfortable driving experience.
  • Not great on gas.
  • Not always suitable for families.
  • Will need to tow a vehicle for errands and daily adventuring.

Super C Motorhomes

Super C RVs are just what they sound like: class C RVs that are souped up! These types of RVs are built on a heavy-duty truck chassis – some super C RVs look like they’re built on a semi engine… because they are.

These RVs have a lot more driving and towing power, and as such, can have much larger living spaces.

Super C RVs are a type of luxury RV and come with the amenities and luxuries you’d find in larger class A motorhomes. They can come with things like:

  • Multiple bathrooms.
  • Dishwashers.
  • Washer and dryer.
  • King sized bed.
  • Excellent driving and towing power.
  • Lots of space and amenities.
  • Incredibly expensive.
  • Long and tall.

Bus Conversions

drivable travel trailers

Bus conversions come in many types, and the kind we are talking about here are commercial bus conversions.

School bus conversions are called Skoolies and are typically DIY – the bus conversions we are talking about here are done professionally on charter busses and the like.

Bus conversions are very expensive and not as common as the rest of the RV types, but you’ll still see many of them on the road.

Pros and Cons of Bus Conversion Coaches

  • Built well and last a long time.
  • Luxury design and amenities.
  • They drive comfortably once you learn how to handle them.
  • Very expensive to purchase.
  • Expensive to maintain and repair.
  • Large size makes trip-routing and campsite-finding trickier.

Types of Towable RVs

There are many types of towable RVs, but they can really be classified into 3 types: fifth wheels, travel trailers, and truck campers.

Smaller campers like teardrop trailers, hybrids, and pop-up campers all fall under the “travel trailer” umbrella, but we’ll dive into each of them here.

Fifth Wheels aka 5th Wheels aka Fivers

drivable travel trailers

Fifth wheels are the largest type of towable RVs. These trailers are easy to spot: they hook up to a truck via a fifth wheel hitch or gooseneck hitch in the bed of the truck.

Having the fifth wheel hitch in the bed of the truck provides a more comfortable and stable towing experience when compared to bumper-tow trailers.

Due to their size and construction, fifth wheels have the largest variety of floor plan styles of any RV type. They can also have multiple bedrooms or even a dedicated office space.

Fifth wheel floor plans exist with front kitchens, mid kitchens, or rear kitchens… As well as front, mid, or rear living. Some fifth wheels can even comfortably sleep up to 10 people!

They range in size from around 30 feet to longer than 40 feet – these are big campers.

Pros and Cons of Fifth Wheels

  • Largest variety of floor plan styles of any RV.
  • Less expensive than motorhomes.
  • Available in a wide range of quality and price points.
  • Very residential-feeling.
  • Most expensive towable RV type.
  • Heavy and requires a large truck to tow which can get expensive.
  • Large and tall – requires careful trip and campsite planning.

Travel Trailers aka Bumper Pulls

drivable travel trailers

Travel trailers are a type of camper that connects to the tow vehicle via the hitch on the bumper. So, they don’t always require a truck. Some cars and most SUVs can tow travel trailers, depending on the overall size, weight, and towing capacity combination.

Travel trailers are the most accessible RV type for everyone. From new RVers to those on a budget, experienced RVers and those who want luxury: there’s a travel trailer for everyone.

Travel trailers come in many lengths: from less than 19 feet long to upwards of 40 feet!

Although travel trailers have long models available, it’s important to keep in mind that you also need to factor in the overall length of your vehicle.

Travel trailers also come in many quality types and price points, too, making them truly accessible for anyone looking to get into RVing.

Pros and Cons of Travel Trailers

  • Least expensive of towable RV types.
  • Wide variety of lengths, qualities, and price points.
  • Can be towed with SUV or truck s
  • Low insurance costs.
  • Some mass-manufactured travel trailers have low quality. No access to the interior while driving.
  • Less storage than fifth wheels or motorhomes.

Toy Haulers

drivable travel trailers

Toy haulers are unique because they can be a travel trailer, fifth wheel, or a motorhome.

A toy hauler is an RV with a dedicated “garage” space and ramp that can carry motorcycles, dirt bikes, or ATVs depending on the size and weight capacity.

You can even find tiny travel trailers that serve as toy haulers for bringing along outdoor gear like kayaks and bicycles.

It’s most common to see toy haulers as fifth wheels or travel trailers, although there is one motorhome model being manufactured today that has a garage space, the Thor Outlaw.

Pros and Cons of Toy Haulers

  • Gives you the ability to bring along equipment.
  • The garage space can be converted into an epic master or kids bedroom, office, or workshop with a view.
  • Some of them have ramps that convert into a fenced-in patio.
  • Not as well insulated as other RV types.
  • If not enclosed, the smell of gasoline from your equipment can permeate your living space.
  • Can be heavy and require a large and expensive truck to tow.

Truck Campers aka Slide In Campers or Backpack Campers

drivable travel trailers

Truck campers are a type of camper that sits entirely inside the bed of a pickup truck.

Since truck campers sit in the bed, the number that matters on the truck is the total payload capacity – not the towing capacity.

Truck campers have many advantages, but their biggest disadvantage is the weight and type of truck you need to safely haul one.

These campers are great for solo travelers or couples who don’t want to worry about towing something behind their truck. You can go just about anywhere with a truck camper and fit in almost any parking spot.

Pros and Cons of Truck Campers

  • Can go just about anywhere.
  • Come in many different types and amenities – some even have slide outs, washer/dryer, and bathrooms.
  • Great for couples and solo travelers.
  • Very small space, many don’t even have a bathroom or toilet.
  • Very heavy and typically requires a large truck.
  • Can be top-heavy, making off-roading difficult.

Pop Up Campers aka Tent Trailers

pop up camper types of RVs

Pop up campers, also called tent campers, are a type of camper that literally pops up. These campers are small but expand when you set them up and are like a hybrid between a tent and a camper trailer.

When folded down for storage or travel, pop up campers are short enough that you can still see out your back windshield when driving. When set up, they can range in height.

The tent portion of pop up campers is made from a heavy duty weatherproof canvas. Although it’s weatherproof, it offers almost no insulation. However, many pop up campers will come with a heater and AC unit to help keep it comfy.

Some have bathroom or toilet areas, and most come with two beds on either pop-out section, a sink and fridge, and a stove top.

Pros and Cons of Pop Up Campers

  • Inexpensive.
  • Easy to tow.
  • Great for family camping trips.
  • Very difficult to regulate temperature – best for fair weather.
  • Not great for long-term trips or full-timing.
  • Small space.
  • Lack of privacy: no noise insulation.

Hybrid Campers

types of RVs: hybrid RV trailer

A hybrid camper is a unique type of camper – it’s like a cross between a travel trailer and a pop up camper.

When all folded up, these campers look like your typical small travel trailer. But when they’re set up at camp, hybrid trailers have tent camper pop out sections just like a pop up camper.

These campers utilize a pop-out section to give the RV more space inside when all set up, yet remain lightweight enough to be towed by midsize SUVs and even some cars depending on the towing capacity.

These pop outs give the same benefit of a slide-out without the weight and hassle of the machinery.

Pros and Cons of Hybrid Campers

  • Pop outs create more interior space in the camper.
  • Lightweight enough for most midsize SUVs and even some cars.
  • Still gives that “camping” feeling even though you’re in an RV.
  • Difficult to regulate temperature.
  • Not good for long-term trips or full-time travel.

Teardrop Campers

drivable travel trailers

We’ve probably all seen teardrop campers – the cute little campers that seem to be shaped like a teardrop!

These days there are a lot of different kinds of teardrop campers on the market. From small teardrops that you can barely sit up in, to the bigger teardrop campers you can stand in like the Little Guy Mini Max, there’s a teardrop for anyone.

These campers are unique and lightweight – there are even teardrop campers that are small enough to tow with a motorcycle.

Pros and Cons of Teardrop Campers

  • Small and lightweight
  • Can tow with any vehicle
  • Great for solo or couple camping trips
  • Smallest space of any camper
  • Many only have a bed and a small cabinet – no kitchen space, bathroom, etc.

FAQ About RV Types and RV Classes

Here are some answers to the top FAQ about RV types and classes.

What Are RV Classes?

An RV Class is a classification about what type of RV it is. RV Classes only apply to drivable RVs, or motorhomes. The drivable RV classes are Class A, Class B, Class B+, Class C, and Super C RVs.

However, many people use the word “class” to describe towable RVs too. In simple terms, an “RV Class” is a differentiation to tell you what style of RV it is.

What Does RV Stand For?

RV stands for Recreational Vehicle. This term is used to describe both drivable and towable campers.

RVs are vehicles made for outdoor recreation like traveling, camping, etc, so the name is well fitting.

What is the Difference Between RV and Camper?

The terms “RV” and “camper” are generally interchangeable. They both refer to recreational vehicles and trailers used for traveling and camping.

While some may argue that “RV” means a large motorhome and “camper” means a small travel trailer, the truth is that they both refer to any and all camper vehicles and trailers.

What is the Most Popular RV Type?

According to the RV Dealership Association (RVDA), travel trailers are the most popular RV type, followed by fifth wheels. Here are the most popular RV types in order, according to sales data from RVDA :

  • Travel Trailers
  • Fifth Wheels

Our family rented an RV from Blacksford for a trip from Las Vegas to Austin, TX, to catch the total eclipse, and it was an unforgettable adventure. The freedom of an RV made the journey incredible. Cindee at Blacksford was a joy to work with, taking the time to walk us through every part of the RV and providing prompt service whenever we had a question on the road. The RV was spotless, well-equipped, and in top condition. Their innovative approach, including airport pick-up and unlimited mileage, made our trip seamless and stress-free. Highly recommend Blacksford for anyone looking to explore the open road with ease and comfort!

10/10 recommend renting an RV or campervan from Blacksford! We rented the Winnebago Solis for a road trip through the southwest from their Vegas location. The pickup process was seamless. They even picked us up to the airport to drive us to the pickup spot! The staff is super friendly, and you're even able to text them throughout your trip if you have any questions. The van was equipped with everything we needed, down to the last detail (including all kitchen utensils, cookware, pillow, sheets and blankets!). It was an amazing trip!

Tow-Tally Awesome Insights for Hassle-Free Dinghy Towing

Published on May 30th, 2024 by Thomas Godwin

Dinghy towing (flat towing is another word for dinghy towing) is the way to go for motorhomes, even though the term is a little strange. Unless you’re a weekend camper, it makes sense to take your car along for the ride. It’s not easy pulling through a McDonald’s drive-thru with a 40′ Class A, much less parking. Maybe that’s a bit of a stretch. Who wants to go to McDonalds?

Half the fun of camping is the exploration part, and it’s much easier to do that when you have the family car with you. Of course, it’s not as simple as throwing a tow strap on the front bumper and calling it a day. Some cars can’t be flat towed because it will mangle the transmission.

With that being said, there are a few things worth looking over before you toss ‘old reliable’ on four wheels behind your motorhome and head for the hills. Or, maybe you’re in need of a new car and are interested in discovering which ones tow the best. Either way, our tips and tricks guide will set you and your future dinghy-towing operation on the right path.

Choosing the right equipment.

Nothing convenient ever comes easy, and dinghy towing is no exception. We’re talking baseplates, tow bars, braking systems, wiring kits, safety cables, etc. Sounds like fun! Hopefully, we’ll make it a bit easier for you by laying everything out in some semblance of order. There’s also your RV manual and car manual, both of which contain essential information for towing.

Now, some vehicles are better suited for towing from the start than others. Take a look at your vehicle, pull out the manual, wipe the dust and ketchup packets off it, and gather information. Besides arming yourself with knowledge, there are a few things you should add to your grocery list before you get started.

Dinghy Towing Essentials

  • Compatible Base Plate: This is a custom-fit plate that attaches to your vehicle’s frame and provides a secure connection point for the tow bar.
  • Compatible Tow Bars: Tow bars connect the base plate on the towed vehicle to the hitch on the motorhome, allowing for safe towing.
  • Safety Cables: These cables act as a backup to the tow bar, ensuring that the towed vehicle remains connected to the motorhome in case the tow bar fails.
  • Plug-in Wiring Kit (Vehicle-specific): This kit connects the electrical systems of the motorhome and the towed vehicle, allowing the towed vehicle’s brake lights, turn signals, and taillights to operate in sync with the motorhome.
  • Charge-line Kit (if applicable): This kit is used to maintain the battery charge of the towed vehicle while it’s being towed.
  • RV Hitch: The hitch on the motorhome is where the tow bar connects, providing the necessary attachment point for towing.
  • Brake System: A supplemental braking system in the towed vehicle helps to ensure safe stopping, reducing the stopping distance and ensuring compliance with towing laws.

Now, when it comes to ‘choosing the best equipment,’ that’s generally up to your best judgment. However, Demco, Camping World, Hopkins, and Roadmaster offer a variety of quality components worth checking out.

The Difference Between Flat Towing vs. Alternative Towing Methods

When it comes to towing your vehicle, the method you choose can significantly impact your vehicle’s transmission and overall ease of travel. Here’s a detailed look at flat towing (also known as dinghy towing) compared to alternative towing options such as using a dolly or a flatbed trailer.

Flat Towing (Dinghy Towing) with Tow Bars

Flat towing involves hauling your vehicle with all four wheels on the ground. This method requires either a drive shaft disengage option or a lube pump system to keep the transmission fluid circulating while towing. Here are some pros and cons of flat towing:

Pros and Cons of Tow Bars

Alternative towing options: dollies and trailers, tow dollies.

A tow dolly is designed for front-wheel-drive (FWD) vehicles. It lifts the front tires off the road, allowing the car to roll on its back tires. Here are the pros and cons of using a dolly:

Pros and Cons of Dollies

Flatbed trailers.

Flatbed trailers, which carry the entire vehicle off the ground, are another alternative for towing. They eliminate any wear and tear on the towed vehicle’s tires and are suitable for all vehicle types.

Pros and Cons of Flatbed Trailers

Braking Systems

Towing with a dolly doesn’t require an additional braking system, but hauling a car with 4-down and tow bars does. It’s also important to check your vehicle’s towing requirements in the manual to determine whether or not you will need a transmission lube pump or a drive shaft disconnect.

All braking systems sold in the U.S. (specifically for towing a vehicle behind your motorhome/camper) are compliant with both U.S. and Canadian requirements. So, that’s not something you have to worry about. There are a variety of braking system types, however, so it’s a good idea to look them over and see what’s right for you.

Types of Braking Systems

There are proportional braking systems, direct, progressive, and vacuum-assist. Some are portable, and some are permanent, while others are somewhere in between. That’s not counting whether you want to go with hydraulic, air, or electric.

  • Portable: Cheaper and interchangeable with new vehicles, especially if you have multiple vehicles you may want to switch out
  • Permanent: Requires installation and is best for those who only have one vehicle to tow and who are seasonal or full-time RVers
  • Proportional: Synchronized operation with the RV and vehicle braking systems
  • Progressive: Supplemental brakes engage only after the RV brakes are engaged (when the order comes down the line, basically)
  • Direct: Connects directly to the RV’s brake lines, essentially making your RV and vehicle brakes one and the same
  • Vacuum-Assist: Uses vacuum power (created by a unit or the vacuum created via the braking action of the RV) to power the brakes in your vehicle

Not using a supplemental braking system places a massive load on your RV’s brakes, which could cause failure. At the very least, you’ll find yourself dealing with brake and wheel issues far too frequently. Most states require some variation of supplemental braking systems on your RV if you’re towing a vehicle behind it. But, the most important reason for doing so is the health and safety of you and your passengers.

Safety Cables And Wiring

Of course, if you have tow bars for dinghy towing, people still have to see your brake lights, turn signals, and hazards, which necessitates a little wiring, preferably without any unexpected shocks. Unfortunately, cars, trucks, and SUVs don’t have the typical plugs and ports found on a trailer.

Demco, BlueOx, Camping World, Hopkins, and Roadmaster are a few good brands out there that sell wiring kits easy to install and set up. These wiring harnesses typically work by connecting to the vehicle’s brake lights or through a bulb and socket kit.

Most of these kits are specific to your vehicle, so be sure to look up your vehicle’s year, make, and model before selecting the right one. You can purchase the kind that do not require any splicing — just simple and effective.

You may have to fiddle with your fuses or disconnect the vehicle’s battery, depending on the vehicle and the wiring setup. If you’re not careful, you may end up draining your vehicle’s battery while you’re towing it. Fortunately, most of these wiring kits come with simple switches to solve this problem.

As far as safety cables, these serve the same purpose as the safety chains/cables you see on trailers. If something fails, the safety cables will keep the vehicle attached and give you enough time to get onto the shoulder of the road and come to a stop.

They also keep the vehicle from detaching and flying out into traffic. Safety cables are required for towing and you should always make sure they are firmly clamped before you head out.

Preparation Tips Before Towing

Preparation for dinghy towing is key. You don’t have to jump through any major hoops. In fact, it’s probably more difficult to obtain auto insurance or get your tag renewed. It just takes a little homework on your part.

Vehicle Compatibility Check

It’s not like the old days when things were simpler, and many vehicles had manual transmissions. Manual transmissions generally allowed for easier and more straightforward towing, often without the risk of transmission damage. Nowadays, with the prevalence of automatic transmissions, you can’t just throw the car in neutral and start towing. Dinghy towing often involves vehicles with automatic transmissions, which can vary significantly in how they should be towed.

If you’re going to tow it with a 4-down, you’ll need to either disengage the drive shaft or use a pump to keep the transmission fluid moving through the system. Make sure you check your manufacturer guidelines and confirm that you can flat-tow your car. If not, you may have to opt for an alternative towing method. Some cars have what is called a “neutral mode,” meaning they are designed to tow without modification.

Here is a list of vehicles that can be dinghy towed: RVBlogger . It’s not the only list out there, so be sure to check as many as you can lay your eyes on.

Installation Tips

First and foremost, you have to make sure you are parked on a level surface. If you’re hooking up your tow bars on the side of a mountain, you’re doing it very, very wrong. Some tow bars will give you a hand in the form of telescoping arms, but it won’t do any good if you’re at an angle.

The first thing to attach is your tow bars. Manipulate the car so that the hitch mount on your RV or the vehicle mount on your car is positioned over the hitch ball. Connect and lock in place before crisscrossing your safety cables/chains beneath the tow bars.

Plug in your wiring and follow the guidelines for whichever supplemental braking system you decide to go with. They will all be a shade different but very similar in a lot of ways. That’s not enough, however. You need a second person to confirm the vehicle’s lights are engaging according to what you’re doing in the driver’s seat. If the lights are a match, you’re good to go.

From here, if you need to prep your transmission, do so according to your vehicle’s user manual.

Driving Tips For Dinghy Towing

One thing is for certain: Never attempt to back up while you’re dinghy towing. The likelihood of damaging your tow bars and toad frame is very high.

Speed And Distance

Most vehicles that are applicable for dinghy towing will tell you right there in the user manual. Generally speaking, however, you don’t want to exceed 60 to 65 mph. Keep your distance from traffic in front of you because you’re already carrying an immense load, and that’s before you count the car you’re towing.

The distance it takes you to stop will exceed what you’re used to without towing. Class Cs and Class As definitely make a difference in terms of weight and stopping power, but it’s not much difference, especially if we’re talking about a Super C.

Turning and Braking

For the most part, we’re talking about motorhomes, though it still applies to towing a vehicle behind a travel trailer or a fifth wheel. Braking is crucial, and you need to conduct routine checks and maintenance on your brakes and tires periodically. You don’t want to get caught out on the interstate with your britches down because your brakes are going bad, and you have to decelerate rapidly.

Whether you’re pulling an RV or driving a motorhome, there is an extended turning radius that you have to deal with. Throw a car on the back, and now it’s even more of an extension to deal with. Even if you’re used to driving your motorhome, you may want to set up some cones and have a little practice out in an abandoned parking lot just to get a feel for it.

Two things affect the turning radius: wheel cut and wheelbase. Know both of them by the back of your head while you’re towing a vehicle and when you’re not.

Routine Inspection

This makes sense whether you’re hauling a 500 lb trailer or a massive SUV. You should always check your setup and connections both when you stop and when you’re heading out on your next trip. If you stop for fuel, check them over. If you stop to go to the bathroom, check them over. Before you break camp in the morning, check them over. It can’t be stated enough. A proactive, preventative maintenance approach may be just the thing that saves lives later on down the road.

That may sound melodramatic and a bit of overkill until the proverbial poop emoji hits the fan, and it’s you that’s right in the middle of it.

Maintenance and Legal Requirements

Maintenance is routine, and it should be. But think of it as preventative maintenance between maintenance. Most professionals recommend maintenance once per year, but if you’re extensively towing your car around, it makes more sense to do it twice a year.

This includes a full visual inspection (preferably when the kids or dogs aren’t running around your ankles and distracting you), hitch lubrication , checking and adjusting your weight distribution, checking over your electrical connections, and having someone look over your tire and axle alignment.

Legal Considerations

Missouri is the only state that doesn’t require supplemental brakes for some reason. The remaining 49 states do, however, and it’s based on the max towed weight or the stopping distance. This is a good reference point if you’re concerned about your own state or states you will be in from time to time: RVIBrake.

Innovative Hacks for Easier Towing:

While not necessarily lesser known or “hacks,” so to speak, there are several things you can do to make your life a lot easier when dinghy towing.

  • Invest in rearview and hitch cameras
  • Look into remote wireless trailer apps
  • Get a tire pressure monitoring system
  • Stay in the right lane as much as possible
  • If possible, drop to a lower gear downhill rather than riding the brakes
  • Plan your routes and avoid backroads and narrow highways
  • Practice driving while dinghy towing, including turns and braking
  • Purchase a trailer

That last is a bit of a joke, but it also has some merit. If you purchase a trailer, you no longer have to worry about the wiring harness, supplemental braking systems, hitch size, transmissions, etc. Just roll the car up onto the trailer. Problem solved.

Dinghy towing is a near necessity for seasonal and full-time RVers. Sure, you can drive your motorhome around town, and no one will stop you. You may get some funny looks while trying to do a 74-point turn to get out of the Dollar General parking lot.

Or, you can make things easier and set your rig up for dinghy towing. So long as you do your homework beforehand and purchase the compatible equipment, it will open up a world of exploration and ease-of-living regardless of where you decide to set up camp.

History of Voronezh

Foundation of voronezh.

The first mention of Voronezh dates back to 1177 in connection with the battle of the Vladimir and Ryazan princes and the escape of Yaropolk of Ryazan to “Voronozh”. Some historians suggest, based on fragments of these chronicles, that Voronezh (Voronozh) existed as a settlement back in the 12th century. Other historians believe that the chronicle meant only the Voronezh River.

The second, very significant, mention of Voronezh in the chronicles refers to 1237, when the conquest of the Russian principalities by Khan Batu began during the Western campaign of the Mongols. The Russian princes decided to give the first battle to the enemies “and came out against them in Voronozh”, but were defeated. Again, the word “Voronozh” probably means the Voronezh River, not a settlement.

The Tsar’s decree on the foundation of Voronezh has not yet been found. The archive has an order of the boyar Nikita Yuriev from 1586 on the reorganization of the guard service on the southern outskirts of the Moscow state and on the construction of two fortified settlements: Livny and Voronezh. Thus, the official year of the foundation of Voronezh is 1586.

Located on the trade route at the confluence of the Voronezh River with the Don, Voronezh could not remain an exclusively military town for a long time. In 1615, its population was about 7 thousand people. From the middle of the 17th century, Russian and foreign ambassadors to the Ottoman Empire, the Crimean Khanate, and the Caucasus travelled through Voronezh. It became part of the Belgorod line - fortifications that protected the Russian state from the raids of the Crimean Tatars until the end of the 17th century.

More Historical Facts…

Voronezh - the cradle of the Russian navy

In 1695, during the first Azov campaign, Russian troops were unable to capture the fortress of Azov standing on the bank of the Don River, several kilometers from its confluence with the Sea of Azov. The siege was unsuccessful, as the Ottoman garrison in the fortress received support from the sea.

Therefore, Peter I decided to start building a fleet. Voronezh was chosen for this because of its strategic position on the Voronezh River flowing into the Don. Secondly, there were forests near the town that could be used as building materials. Thirdly, the residents of Voronezh had experience in the construction and use of river vessels.

In 1696, as a result of the second campaign, the Azov fortress was taken by Russian troops. The Russian fleet prevented the supply of people, ammunition and food to the fortress. From 1696 to 1711, about 215 ships were built in Voronezh, including the ship “Goto Predestinatsia” (The Providence of God) - the first Russian ship of the line.

In Voronezh, the organizational foundations for the subsequent construction of the Russian fleets in the Baltic and Black Seas were laid. The first Admiralty in Russia was also created here. However, the military shipyard in Voronezh did not exist for long due to the gradual shallowing of the rivers.

Voronezh in the 18th-19th centuries

In 1709, Voronezh became part of the Azov Governorate. In 1711, its center moved from Azov to Tambov, and in 1715 - to Voronezh. In 1725, after the death of the first Russian emperor, the region was renamed into the Voronezh Governorate. In 1745, the first educational institution was opened - the theological seminary (closed in 1918, reopened in 1993).

In 1748, Voronezh was badly damaged by fire. Almost the entire center, which was located on the bank of the river, burned down. After that, the center of Voronezh again began to be located in the place of today’s Universitetskaya Square.

In 1774, after another big fire, Catherine II approved the general plan for the regular development of Voronezh. In the second half of the 18th - the first half of the 19th centuries, Voronezh was one of the centers of the Russian cloth industry.

In 1781, the coat of arms of Voronezh was approved: “The shield is divided in two, in the upper part in a golden field - a two-headed black eagle, and in the lower part in a red field - an overturned jar, from which the Voronezh River flows”.

In 1863, according to the census of residents, Voronezh numbered 38,672 people (the 12th largest city in the Russian Empire). The first public library was opened in 1864. In 1868, Voronezh was connected by railway with Moscow, in 1871 - with Rostov-on-Don, in 1894 - with Kursk.

Voronezh in the first half of the 20th century

In 1913, the first secular higher educational institution in Voronezh was opened - the Agricultural Institute named after Peter the Great (Voronezh State Agrarian University named after Emperor Peter I). In 1914, the population of the city was 93,700 people. During the First World War, reserve military units were formed in Voronezh, defense enterprises from the western regions of the Russian Empire were evacuated here.

In 1928, Voronezh became the center of the Central Black Earth Oblast. And after its liquidation in 1934, it remained the center of Voronezh Oblast. On August 2, 1930, the first Soviet airborne assault was parachuted two kilometers from Voronezh. Today, August 2 is celebrated as the birthday of the Russian airborne forces.

In 1932, two large factories were built on the left bank - aviation and rubber. One of the most important industrial and scientific complexes in the USSR was formed in the city. Many types of aircraft produced in Voronezh began to enter the Red Air Force several years before the outbreak of World War II. In 1939, the population of Voronezh was 326,932 people.

In October-November 1941, during the Second World War, most of the large enterprises were evacuated to the east. From July 7, 1942 to January 25, 1943, the right-bank part of Voronezh, being under German occupation, suffered significant damage, about 18 thousand houses were destroyed (92% of all residential buildings). The active defense of Voronezh helped the Red Army to withstand and win in Stalingrad.

In November 1945, it was decided to prioritize the restoration of 15 oldest Russian cities, including Voronezh. In the late 1940s, the restoration of industrial enterprises was completed, by the mid-1950s - residential and public buildings. In 1956, the population of the city exceeded 400 thousand people.

Voronezh in the second half of the 20th century

In 1968, the first serial Soviet supersonic passenger aircraft Tu-144 was produced at the Voronezh Aviation Plant; in October 1977 - the first Soviet airbus (wide-body aircraft) Il-86. In 1972, the Voronezh reservoir was built, which became the largest in the region.

In 1983, about 6 km from the city limits, the construction of the Voronezh nuclear power plant for heat supply began. In 1990, under the influence of the Chernobyl disaster, it was suspended on the basis of a referendum held among Voronezh residents. The station, which was approximately 65% completed, was mothballed. In 2020, work began on its dismantling. In 1989, the population of Voronezh was about 887,000.

In the 1990s, in connection with the collapse of the USSR, the largest industrial enterprises of Voronezh were on the verge of bankruptcy due to a sharp decline in defense orders and the breakdown of existing economic ties. A lot of churches were returned to the Russian Orthodox Church; their restoration was carried out.

In the early and mid-1990s, agreements on twinning relations were concluded between Voronezh and the cities of Charlotte (USA), Chongqing (China) and Sliven (Bulgaria).

In 2008, Voronezh was awarded the title “City of Military Glory”. In 2009, a new Cathedral of the Annunciation, the third largest Orthodox church in Russia, was built to replace the destroyed one. On December 17, 2012, a millionth resident was born in the city, which made Voronezh the 15th city in Russia with a population of over 1 million.

Voronezh - Features

Initially, the city stood on the banks of the Voronezh River. In the 1970s, it was turned into a reservoir - one of the largest reservoirs in the world located entirely within the city. The Voronezh reservoir divides the city into two parts. Its center, cultural institutions, embankments, the best establishments, and the most prestigious districts are located on the right bank. On the left bank there are industrial enterprises, residential areas, and one beautiful park. The two banks are connected by three bridges: the longest of them is Severnyy Bridge (2 km long).

There are several versions of the origin of the name of the Voronezh River after which the city of Voronezh was named. Most likely it comes from the word “voron” (“raven”) or “voronoy” (black) reflecting the dark color of the water in the Voronezh River. The City Day of Voronezh is celebrated annually on the third Saturday of September.

Voronezh is located in a temperate zone. Winter is moderately frosty with a permanent snow cover that forms in December. Quite often there are thaws accompanied by rains (especially in December). Also there are often drops in temperature below minus 20 degrees Celsius, which can last up to a week or more.

Summer is warm, even hot (especially July and the first half of August), in some years - rainy, in some years - dry. Autumn is mild and rainy. The Voronezh reservoir is covered with ice in late November - early December. Spring ice drift lasts from March to April. The average temperature in January is minus 7.6 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 22.7 degrees Celsius.

Voronezh is the economic center of the Voronezh region and one of the largest economic centers in Russia. The leading sectors of the economy are food, chemical, radio-electronic industries, mechanical engineering and retail trade. The largest enterprises of Voronezh are Voronezh Joint-Stock Aircraft Building Company, Voronezh Mechanical Plant, Voronezh Ceramic Plant, Carriage Repair Plant named after V.I. Thalmann.

This city is a major transport hub, the transport system of which consists of air, rail and road transport systems. The Peter the Great Voronezh International Airport offers regular flights to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Sochi, Kaliningrad, Samara, Krasnodar, Novosibirsk, Kazan, Yekaterinburg, Rostov-on-Don. Public transport is represented by mini-buses, buses and trolleybuses.

Voronezh is worth visiting not only for its interesting museums, beautiful parks and picturesque squares. Here you can also see funny monuments to animals - heroes of famous literary works, replicas of the first ships of the Russian navy, unusual buildings in the Art Nouveau and Gothic style of the late 19th-20th centuries.

There are a lot of traditional Russian churches, theaters, and former merchant mansions in Voronezh that catch the eye with their noble and elegant appearance. Also, tourists should pay attention to the monuments perpetuating the image of the heroes of the Second World War. The Voronezh Sea, a huge reservoir stretching for tens of kilometers, is of no less interest.

Atlanta investigating two more potential water main breaks

Atlanta’s water crisis threatened to expand Sunday, when authorities announced they were investigating two new potential main breaks at Euclid and North avenues and at 1190 Atlantic Drive NW.

Residents and businesses in those areas, according to city officials, might experience the kinds of disruptions that have plagued Atlanta since the first water main break was discovered Friday near Joseph E. Boone Boulevard and James P. Brawley Drive.

Water officials said they temporarily shut off a 6-inch main at Euclid and North avenues to make emergency repairs there. Service was eventually restored to the 35 homes and four hydrants affected.

Meanwhile, a boil-water advisory for customers near that part of the city could be lifted as soon as Monday, if Atlanta gets authorization from Georgia’s Environmental Protection Division, said Al Wiggins Jr., the city’s Watershed Management Department commissioner.

“So far, we see that the samples are looking good. Water pressure has remained consistent,” he said in an exclusive interview with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Sunday.

In a statement, a spokeswoman for the Georgia EPD said the agency “is in close communication with the City of Atlanta and stands ready to assist as needed.”

In Midtown, water continued flowing from a broken main at West Peachtree and 11th streets, flooding the road and seeping into nearby buildings. Authorities don’t know what caused that break, though they don’t believe it is connected to the one at Joseph E. Boone Boulevard and James P. Brawley Drive, Wiggins said.

“We won’t be able be able to collect samples for the West Peachtree and 11th street area until we complete the repairs,” Wiggins said.

Some onlookers referred to the break as the “aqua apocalypse” or the “West Peachtree River.”

Robert Watkins waded into the middle of West Peachtree Street Sunday, using a bucket to scoop water gushing from the nearby broken pipe. Appearing tired but determined, he headed down the normally busy street nearby to Soak & Polish Nail Bar, where he said his bucket, filled to the brim, could come in handy.

”So we can flush the toilet and, you know, the different stuff that we need to do with water,” said Watkins, whose home was also without running water. “We pray they get those water lines fixed.”

Stan Reecy, who had just returned from his honeymoon in South Africa, was dismayed to discover he was among the Midtown Atlanta homeowners under a boil-water advisory. The water main break on West Peachtree Street is about 500 feet from his home.

On Sunday, he stood in front of Eleventh Street Pub, where a window appeared to be shattered from the water main break. A wooden board has now replaced that window. Security guards watched the entrance.

“Definitely a little shocking to see it right up the street from me,” he said.

Atlanta’s water system provides water for 1.2 million people, according to its website. City Hall is rallying to help those in need, said LaChandra Butler Burks, Atlanta’s chief operating officer.

“Our fire recruits were out every hour checking in with hotels and venues,” she said. “Our police recruits were visiting high-rises every hour on the hour to check on our seniors.”

Each resident who needs bottled water may pick up a case at one of six fire stations across the city: Station 1 on Elliot Street in southwest Atlanta, Station 2 on Jonesboro Road, Station 10 on Boulevard, Station 11 on 16th Street, Station 15 on 10th Street or Station 16 on Joseph E. Boone Boulevard.

Musician Megan Thee Stallion had to postpone Friday and Saturday’s concerts at State Farm Arena, but Sunday night’s performance was expected to continue as planned.

Atlanta United’s soccer match against Charlotte FC will be played as scheduled Sunday afternoon at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the team said on its website. The stadium will have limited food and beverage options due to the boil water advisory, however. Kickoff was set for 4:30 p.m.

Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport said its water pressure is fine and that all operations are normal after reporting low water pressure in some of its restrooms on Saturday.

In a 6 a.m. update, the Atlanta Department of Watershed Management said service had been fully restored to the airport, the Fulton County Jail, the Atlanta City Detention Center and several senior high-rise buildings.

Officials announced about 7 p.m. Saturday that crews had completed multiple rounds of repairs on the aging pipe at the junction of Joseph E. Boone Boulevard and J.P. Brawley Drive. The system was gradually being brought back online to allow for the rebuilding of system pressures, the city said. Another major break, at 11th Street and West Peachtree, was still being repaired, Dickens said at a press conference Saturday night. A “State of Emergency” was declared for Atlanta to free up resources to help with the repairs, and the city’s joint operations center was activated.

“We don’t yet have an estimate for the timeline for that work, but they are out there working feverishly to get it done,” Dickens said.

A spokesperson for Grady Memorial Hospital said water service was restored and that pressure had increased significantly. Bottled water was being given to patients and staff since the boil advisory remained in effect, but all appointments, procedures and surgeries were expected to continue as planned on Monday.

Emory University Hospital Midtown also announced it was “moving to normal operations” on Sunday following the repairs of several water main breaks.

The hospital said water pressure returned to normal overnight and that ambulances had resumed normal service. Emory also said it would to operate on regular schedules for outpatient doctor’s appointments, procedures and surgeries on Monday.

Emory University Hospital Midtown said it had to move some patients and divert ambulances Saturday, with the exception of those experiencing urgent heart problems. To keep the hospital cool and the air conditioning running, 58,000 gallons of water were brought in via six tanker trucks to use in the hospital’s chillers and cooling towers.

Water was also restored in the West End area Sunday afternoon, but the previous two days had been hard, especially for Derrick Avery. For six years Avery and his family have lived on Rose Circle near White Street, but this weekend, with no water, they had to leave for his mother’s home in Greenbriar about 15 minutes away so his family could use the bathroom. They also transported pots and containers for water back-and-forth, filling them as needed.

Avery, 47, has eight children, ranging in age from one to 14. The baby was fine, but it was difficult to manage the younger children without water, he said. Because they were not able to cook, the family had to eat out, putting an unexpected $200 dent in the family budget. When the water initially stopped on Friday, Avery called the city’s 311 nonemergency number where he stayed on hold for an hour before hanging up. He was never able to reach anyone for answers. It was inconvenient, he said, “but we made it work.”

Along nearby Ralph David Abernathy Blvd. across from The Mall West End, hairstylists Jacqueline Glover and Travis Campbell were working hard to make up for the lack of business the previous two days. “It was like the pandemic all over again,” said, Campbell, who has been working in the West End area for the past 16 years, including the past few in The Suites at West End.

Karen Chandler, a Greenville, S.C. native that’s lived in Brookhaven for 23 years, made a hair appointment for Friday with Siara Capri Hair, another salon located in The Suites but had to reschedule.

No water also meant the one bathroom the salons share was shut down. Capri had to turn down three customers, she said.

With others, “I made it work, but I wasn’t able to wash their hair,” she said.

UPDATE AS OF 06-02-2024 (2 P.M.) A boil water advisory remains in effect. Nationwide, a water main break happens every two minutes and an estimated 6 billion gallons of treated water are lost each day, enough to fill more than 9,000 swimming pools, according to a 2021 report by the American Society of Civil Engineers.

That report gave the nation’s drinking water infrastructure a C-, up from a D in 2017. The improvement came, according to the report, as water agencies significantly picked up their pace in replacing waterlines.

Atlanta’s woes highlight the importance of investing in and maintaining such infrastructure, said Tom Dobbins, chief executive officer of the Washington-based Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies.

“It underscores the critical nature that water plays in our lives,” he said in an interview Sunday, adding: “My heart goes out to the people of Atlanta for what you are going through.”

Pam Burnett, executive director of the Georgia Association of Water Professionals, said she felt “heartsick” about Atlanta’s crisis.

“Water professionals, like medical professionals, put their full effort to ‘stop the bleeding’ in an emergency situation to keep the crisis from getting worse,” she wrote in an email. “Of course, the hope is that the line break can be brought under control quickly and notice to the public can follow with enough detail to explain the situation.

“Major and multiple line breaks are incredibly rare and difficult to address, and it’s frustrating for the public… and especially hard on the water professionals working in the trenches with everyone above them getting angry.”
