DOWN Announces Spring/Summer 2022 Tour Dates

Long-running heavy metal supergroup DOWN , featuring vocalist Philip H. Anselmo , guitarists Pepper Keenan and Kirk Windstein , drummer Jimmy Bower and bassist Pat Bruders , will make a handful of rare live appearances this spring and summer.

The band will launch a three-date U.S. run of shows on May 19 at the Welcome To Rockville festival in Daytona Beach, Florida. After playing in Atlanta and Dallas immediately after Rockville , DOWN will take a three-week break before regrouping for three European festival appearances in June. An appearance at this year's Blue Ridge Rock Festival will follow in September in Alton, Virginia.

Two months ago, Windstein confirmed to Ghost Cult that DOWN was still planning to release a six-song EP of "obscure" cover songs. "A lot of people have been asking about that yet; that's true," he said. "We just need to get our butts in a room together and pick the shit out and DOWN it up a little bit, so to speak. But that's the only thing in the future as of now. But it's something."

As for the possibility of DOWN staging the previously announced anniversary tour celebrating the 25th anniversary of the band's 1995-released classic debut album, "NOLA" , after the trek was sidelined due to the global pandemic, Kirk said: "I sure hope so. I mean, we have [shows booked in] Dallas and I believe we have one in Atlanta, and we have [ Welcome To ] Rockville , we have a festival in Florida — as far as I know.

"But yeah, I'm optimistic [that we will be able to do a short 'NOLA' anniversary tour]," he continued. "I get it that maybe DOWN is not in a position to do a lot of touring anymore or anything, but for god's sake, we can at least do mainly Southeast of the United States, a bit of the Midwest — not to dick you over on the West Coast, but without going thousands of miles away — do something. But we'll see. Right now, of course, everyone's concern is just doing what we have booked already and hoping that that goes smoothly."

Last August, DOWN took part in a very special in-person live and virtual experience. "NOLA Town Throwdown" was held at the Fillmore in New Orleans, Louisiana and featured fans attending the show in person as well as watching it in real time from the comfort of their living room.

In August 2020, DOWN celebrated the 25th anniversary of "NOLA" with a special livestreamed event. Dubbed "The Quarter Century Throwdown" , the high-production, multi-camera event took place using cutting-edge streaming technology to create a one-of-a-kind virtual concert experience.

A founding member of DOWN , Windstein left the band in 2013 in order to focus on CROWBAR and his family life. He was replaced by Bobby Landgraf , DOWN 's former guitar tech who was previously in GAHDZILLA MOTOR COMPANY , a 1990s outfit also featuring Jason McMaster ( DANGEROUS TOYS , WATCHTOWER ),and HONKY .

Windstein announced his return to DOWN in 2019, with the band confirming a number of festival appearances for 2020 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of "NOLA" , all of which have since been canceled or postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic which is sweeping the globe.

Prior to the August 2020 livestream, DOWN 's last live appearance took place in August 2016 at the Psycho Las Vegas festival in Las Vegas.

Down are a heavy metal super-group that formed in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. The band first started playing together in 1991 but due to commitments in the members' other bands, didn’t start playing together full time until 2006.

Down is a band that has been made up of members of Pantera, Corrosion of Conformity, Goatwhore and Eyehategod during their career. Now, I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking that based on that pedigree alone, Down’s music must be heavy like an osmium elephant, right? Well, you’d be wrong. Strangely enough the band play ukulele lead folk pop inspired by the children’s stories they read to their… yeah, I’m kidding, they play the heaviest of heavy metal.

The band begun in 1991, formed by Phil Anselmo of Pantera on vocals, Corrosion of Conformity’s Pepper Keenan playing guitar, Crowbar’s Todd Strange and Kirk Windstein on guitar and bass respectively, and was rounded off by Eyehategod’s Jimmy Bower on the drums. The band was named after the fact that the members could only play together when the bands they played in normally were on their *down*time. It’s clever, y’see?

Also clever was how the band first spread the word about themselves. After making a three track demo tape, the band would ask metal fans if they’d ever heard of “this band, Down?” and hand them the tape when they said no. Of course, this was done without ever actually telling them that they were in the band themselves. Needless to say, it worked, the band played a single show in their home town of New Orleans, and were signed to Elektra Records immediately afterwards.

“NOLA”, the band’s debut album, was released in 1995 and was an instant critical and commercial success, but the band couldn’t capitalise on the album’s success with more than a 13 date US tour before returning to their main bands soon afterwards. The band returned in 2001 with a hastily put together second record titled “Down II: A Bustle in Your Hedgerow”. The album wasn’t anywhere near as well received as its predecessor but it did allow the band to tour with the 2002 Ozzfest show, however once that was over, so was the band. Or so the world thought.

Between 2002 and 2006, both Pantera and Corrosion of Conformity split up, Anselmo’s former bandmate Dimebag Darrel Abbot was shot and killed onstage, Hurricane Katrina ravaged the bands home town of New Orleans and Anselmo himself recovered from back surgery and crippling drug addiction. Needless to say, the album that these events fuelled, “Down III: Over the Under”, is pretty amazing, widely regarded as the bands best effort.

It also meant that the key members of the band could now put as much effort into Down as they pleased. Since then they’ve released their fourth album as a set of two E.P’s, toured the world and honed themselves into one of the metal world’s truly live acts. They’re at the top of their game to this day, and any metal fan would do well to see them live the next chance they get.

Live reviews

Although no band will ever live up to the ferocity of Pantera, Phil's new band Down does a pretty damn good job! At first when I heard about the creation of Down, I was skeptical, wondering just what Phil would come up with and if it would just be a copy cat of Pantera, or if he could create something new.

Well, I was impressed when I heard the first album and knew that I needed to see them live. I saw Pantera many times in the past, and nothing really compares to that concert, and then I saw Down! Maybe it was because pretty much everyone in the crowd were Pantera fans, but the second Phil hit that stage, it was on! Talk about a mosh pit, talk about shear raw energy, it was just so powerful and intoxicating!

I do have to say that Phil has mellowed out just a little bit on stage, but with all the neck problems and surgery he's had over the years from beating himself up so badly in Pantera, it only makes sense that he has to mellow out a bit. But even though he isn't bouncing all over the stage throwing his body everywhere, his attitude and ferociousness on stage still takes charge and is amazing to witness! The show is intense and that is what I would expect from Phil and his new band Down!

Phil Anselmo and Co. did not disappoint!! Seen them at Piere's Friday aug.8 in Ft.Wayne, Ind. And after all these years he still sounds great! the opening band, Child Bite also sound's awesome and the lead singer is really good. The 2nd. band, Mountain of wizard was a totally different experience.. all instrumental no singing at all and they held your attention throughout there show they defiantly jammed out! It was a good place to see the concert and the crowd really enjoyed it! No trouble or problems at all. But my favorite part was when Phil's girlfriend Kate came out on stage at the closing and jammed on the guitar!! Shoot girlfriend should do a whole show!!:)

Oh and don't stand there the entire time with your cell phone taking pictures cause Phil WILL stop the song and tell you to "put it the "F" up!"

Put on a kick ass show,Phil was usual indomitable self. Sound guys could e done better with vocals(too overpowering)in a small venue like this. Pierre's is a cool little club with good atmosphere, but not much else to do in that area.
