Commitment to Exceptional dog care and ethical mushing
We are proud to hold high standards for ourselves and our fellow mushers when it comes to dog care. At the Alaska Dog Center, we strive to provide our canine athletes with the most fulfilling and comfortable lives possible and to educate our guests and fellow dog lovers about the fantastic lives of sled dogs. Visit us in Willow, AK and we will happily answer any questions you may have about the ethics of dog mushing.
Hanging up the harness Program
Retired sled dog make loyal, enthusiastic, and loving companions. Once sled dogs are ready to “hang up the harness,” mushers will find pet homes for their dogs or bring them into their own home for their senior years. The Alaska Dog Center has a long term goal of operating tours exclusively with sled dogs who are ready to retire into a pet home and are available for adoption by our guests. We take in dogs from fellow mushers and help introduce them to indoor “pet dog” life while they run tours with us. Currently we have a few dogs who are available for adoption through our Hanging Up The Harness program. Click here for more information.
Sponsorship
Fall in love with one of our dogs during your visit, but are unable to adopt? Consider sponsoring one of our Hanging Up The Harness canines. All sponsorship donations will go towards feeding, vaccinating, and other basic dog care for our HUTH dogs as we help them find their perfect retirement home. With your sponsorship you will receive an 8×8 tile photo of your sponsored dog and monthly updates, photos, and videos of your sponsored canine until they are adopted. Also, feel free to purchase anything from our Amazon wishlist for our dogs, including toys, treats, and gear! We greatly appreciate your support!

Excursion Overview
Dog sledding through talkeetna's winter wonderland.
The Anchorage Winter Dog Sledding Tour is an incredible opportunity to learn about Alaska's beloved state sport. Your journey will start with stress-free transportation from Anchorage to Talkeetna, as your expert local guide drives past stunning scenic vistas. Weather permitting, you'll even be able to see Denali, the tallest peak in North America. You'll arrive in Talkeetna at the homestead of Dallas Seavey, a SIX-time Iditarod Champion, top three finisher in Norway's 2018 Finnmarkslopet, youngest Yukon Quest first place Champion, and former star of National Geographic Channel's Ultimate Survival Alaska. There's no better location to learn about the musher lifestyle and lingo while you bond with your team of pups. Groups of two guests will share sleds for the mushing portion of this tour. You and your team of Alaskan Huskies will travel 10 km/6 miles through our private, birch-lined trails. Enjoy the complete winter silence, aside from the dogs' excited barks and pounding paws. Teams will stop to alternate mushing positions halfway through so everyone gets to experience both "lead" and "tail" mushing. You'll also have the perfect photo opportunity with the huskies as they bask in the sun, before finishing your ride and crossing the burled arch Finish Line.

Adventure with Greatland Adventures
- Bev As a solo traveler I usually veer towards group tours and make my decisions based on ratings. Greatland Adventures definitely lived up to their high ratings and awesome reviews. I have booked several tours with them. From the beginning it was a pleasurable experience with Steve and Rochelle who have excellent communication with their clients and ensure you are fully accommodated for your tour. I did the northern lights tour with Mike who is an excellent guide! Very knowledgeable and he captured some excellent photos of me! I completed the glacier tour with Bill who is also very knowledgeable and ensured we had a great experience at the glacier by getting us there before others arrived and allowing us to safe explore all the accessible crevasses. I absolutely recommend this tour company they are amazing!
- Jane I want to sincerely applaud the members of Greatland Adventures! They made me and my friend's trip to Anchorage one of the most amazing experiences ever in our lives... We were all well educated about the lights before we got there and even had a chance to have a pitstop at a gas station to use the toilet and grab a coffee. We even saw the lights that night TWICE! Thank you, Steve! The memories we made will last a lifetime and we are so happy we chose Greatland Adventures. I am telling any and everyone that plans to visit Anchorage to book through them. No question!
- John I can't say enough about how thoroughly I enjoyed this northern lights tour -- it was truly beyond belief! Steve provides an extremely well-run and well thought-out process for folks to see the aurora, the nicest part of which is that you don't know until about 6 pm that day whether or not you'll be going. This means you don't pay unless you go! But our group got lucky! The skies cleared on Friday evening (16 Feb), and Steve and Laura drove us an hour outside of Anchorage to a supremely dark place they had already scouted out. As soon as we arrived, the green hues started firing up and the sight was beyond one's imagination.

THK is an an elite team of canine athletes and two mushers. Together, we travel Alaska’s vast wilderness, race the 1,000 mile Iditarod, and introduce Alaskan visitors to our amazing lifestyle. We are passionate about what we do and have had our hard work rewarded through improved race records, awards for “best dog care,” and great reviews about our tours from our many visitors.
The Iditarod Sled Dog Race
We are a professional racing kennel that focuses on the Iditarod, a 1,000 mile-long dog sled race. A dog sled team in the Iditarod is comprised of 14 dogs and one musher. Travis has competed in the Iditarod 9 times, with his top finish being 5th place. Sarah has competed in 2 Iditarods, with her best finish being 34th. Although we did not enter a team in the 2023 Iditarod due to some big life changes, we look forward to training and racing a team for the 2024 Iditarod.
Learn About Dog Sledding
Our passion is teaching people about dog sledding, the Iditarod, and our kennel — that’s why we run tours. We know that not all those interested in the sport can make their way to us so learn about mushing by following our blog !
Our dogs are the heart and soul of what we do. We pride ourselves on having fun, friendly, and highly energetic dogs. Whether it’s our leading lady Queen and her partner Ohmer or our big wheel dogs Tug and Barge, these guys make everyday fun. Our dog care has been publicly recognized as the best in the sport by the Tustumena 200, the Copper Basin 300 , and the Knik 200 races multiple times.
In 2021, Travis received the sportsmanship award from the Willow 300. In 2022 we received another best dog care award from the Knik 200 and were also honored with the sportsmanship award by the Iditarod . In 2023, Travis was awarded the sportsmanship award by the Willow 300 . We value quality dog care and helping others above any race placement. Although we did not participate in the 2023 Iditarod, we are looking forward to racing the Iditarod in 2024.
