John Mellencamp Announces Massive North American Tour, Live and In Person 2023

John Mellencamp Announces Massive North American Tour, Live and In Person 2023

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee John Mellencamp has announced a massive North American tour, dubbed Live and In Person 2023. The 76-stop run is set to kick off with a two-night stand in Bloomington, Ind., at Indiana University Auditorium on Feb. 5 and 6.

After opening up his tour, Mellencamp will travel through the Southern region of the United States during the month of February, making stops in Charlotte, N.C., and Atlanta before arriving in Florida, where the “Jack & Diane” singer will perform eight shows, before making his way to the Lone Star State for four more gigs.

From there, Mellencamp will embark on the Pacific Northwest leg of the tour, beginning at Portland, Ore.’s Keller Auditorium on March 11. Then, the musician will travel north to Vancouver, B.C., which will be followed by shows in Seattle before taking on the Golden State for a series of mid-March performances.

Next up, the 70-year-old rocker will arrive in Las Vegas for a two-night stand at Encore Theater at Wynn Las Vegas on March 24 and 25, before a return to the Midwest, for several stops throughout April and into May. In addition, the artist’s newly released itinerary includes a three-night stand at the mystic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tenn., on May 8 through 10.

After traveling through the interior of the United States, Mellencamp will arrive on the East Coast for a portion of his final tour stops. Once there, he’ll take a stand in New York at the Beacon Theatre, before making his way to Toronto. Then, he’ll follow up with a return to the Midwest, where he’ll end the tour with two nights at Morris Performing Arts Center in South Bend, Ind., on June 24 and 25.

Tickets for John Mellencamp’s forthcoming tour will go on sale to the general public beginning on Friday, Oct. 7 at 10 a.m. local time. For more information, visit the artist’s official website .

GREEN BAY - John Mellencamp is keeping this year's Live and In Person Tour going into 2024, and that means Green Bay is getting a stop.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee will perform March 25 at The Weidner, a venue he has sold out multiple times, including his last appearance there in April 2019 . It will be his fourth visit to the 2,000-seat hall known for its impeccable acoustics.

Green Bay is one of 27 new cities announced for the 2024 itinerary, each billed as "one night only." The tour begins March 8 in Rochester, New York, and wraps April 22 in Savannah, Georgia. As he did this year, he's playing performing arts centers, theaters and auditoriums.

He'll perform March 26, the night after Green Bay, at the Overture Center for the Arts in Madison.

Mellencamp teased the tour last week on social media with a post that said "We are coming to YOUR town soon." It didn't list cities but showed dots of destinations on a map of the country.

Tickets will go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, according to the announcement on his website . Prices are $57.50, $91.50, $114 and $171. Presales will run from Tuesday through Thursday. Register at mellencamp.com for the presale mailing list.

In addition to a deep catalog of hits that includes "Pink Houses," "Small Town" and "Jack and Diane," Mellencamp, 72, will perform music from his 25th studio album, "Orpheus Descending," which came out in June and is considered one of his most personal records to date.

John Mellencamp is an American rock musicians, songwriter and singer. He is best known for his catchy heartland rock, and is originally from Seymour, Indiana.

John Cougar Mellencamp was born on 7 October 1951 and formed his first band at the early age of 14. Around 1975 he found someone who was receptive to his music from MainMan management named Tony DeFries, who insisted Mellencamp used Johnny Cougar as his stage name in order to be easier to market. Mellencamp recorded an album of cover songs, but it didn’t sell well. Eventually, he parted ways with DeFrieds and signed to Riva Records and paired with Rod Stewart’s manager, Billy Gaff. Mellencamp then briefly moved to London to record and tour for his album “A Biography.” The record, which was not released in the United States did manage to chart in Australia.

Upon returning to the United States, he recorded and released “Nothin’ Matters an What If It Did?” which did have two charting singles; however, Mellencamp was not too happy with the finished product. His breakthrough album finally came in 1982 with the release of his album, “American Fool.” With the commercial success, Mellencamp was allowed to push to use his surname.

The 1985 release of “Scarecrow” was the first album that he recorded in his home studio, and saw it as the start of his alternative country genre. Shortly after, he partook in the first Farm Aid benefit concert with other founders, Willie Nelson and Neil Young, followed by a tour for “Scarecrow.” By the early 90s he dropped Cougar from his name and was billed simply as John Mellencamp.

By the early 21st century, he paired up with other artists for collaborations, and in 2005 set out on tour with John Fogerty and Donovan. He released his eighteenth album, “Life, Death, Love and Freedom” in 2008, and sold over 50,000 copies. Continuing a strong touring schedule and releasing albums, he continues into 2014, most recently with his album “Troubled Man.”

Live reviews

This was my first time seeing John Mellencamp after being a fan since I was a young kid. I grew up listening to his music and watching his videos on MTV and I thoroughly enjoyed the rock with a dash of country violin.

The show at the Chicago theater was probably a lot different than someone who would have seen Mellencamp in the 1980s would expect. Mellencamp is older and maybe/maybe not wiser from the lyrics of his songs. His newer music has a slower tempo, seems more introspective and looks at the world from the viewpoint of a man who has seen a lot of life.

The show started off with new material from his Plain Spoken album (most recent release). "Lawless Times," "Troubled Man," and "Minutes to Memories" were all played at the start of his show to capture the attention of his audience and hopefully focus it on his newer work. As a long time fan, I find it hard to reconcile his new music with the music I grew up loving. I do not mean this in a bad way. It is just that in my brain, John Mellencamp is still under thirty and raising hell in rural Indiana. Hearing his more mature voice in his new work is a pleasant surprise because the songwriting is in the same vein, just from a man who still dances, albeit a bit more slowly.

Mellencamp also played several fan favorites, "Small Town," "Jack and Diane," "Paper in Fire," "Check it Out," "Cherry Bomb," "Crumbin' Down," and "Authority Song." Each of these was a thrill to hear live from the man who defined so much of my youth. "Jack and Diane" was done acoustically which was a nice change to a song well over thirty years old. Mellencamp mentioned a sore throat and an almost cancellation of the show a few songs in but it was hard to tell how much his voice was affected because it sounded like John Mellencamp. Several songs seemed to have minor changes but that could have just been normal recorded-to-live-version differences. If the songs were changed structurally to give them a different feel for an audience that has been hearing them for thirty years or longer then I do not object as they were true enough to the originals to still resonate even if they stood apart from the originals themselves.

Overall, the energy level was pretty intense when you consider that Mellencamp has been performing live for "45 years" in his words. The band was tight and sounded great. Guitar, drums and violin packed the same punch for me as they did on the radio in 1982.

The show was my fiance's first real exposure to Mellencamp (she is from the East Coast originally and was not into him prior to the show). She danced, liked his bluesy renditions of "Catastrophe Called Life" and "Longest Days" and left with a much deeper understanding of why I have been such a long time fan. She commented on the walk back to the car how the songs really capture all of his life, from frustration with the small town life, the craziness of youth and a final acceptance as he gets older.

I wish the sound people at the Chicago Theater would have punched up the violin because being up the balcony, it sounded a little too quiet compared to the rest of the band and especially in his older work, the violin drives the tempo of the music. Also, Theater staff should have done a better job of shutting down or moving out obnoxious fans who did not know when cackling and loud voices were uncalled for when Mellencamp was speaking.

As far as Mellencamp and his band, I hope I get to see them again.

John Mellencamp - or John Cougar Mellencamp, depending on who you ask - is one of those songwriters who seemed to embody the eighties for all who followed him; like Bruce Springsteen, his trademark style of heartland rock certainly tapped into something undeniably American, but not necessarily in a way that was trite or exploitative of the flag; instead, this was music for the people. A slew of the top ten hits that he had in his homeland during his eighties heyday were very much rooted in that way of thinking; the likes of ‘Pink Houses, ‘Cherry Bomb’ and ‘Small Town’ were all based around Mellencamp’s everyman lyrical style, with his critical attitude towards the Reagan administration prominent throughout. That’s not to say, though, that Mellencamp’s considerable cult fanbase is exclusively politically-minded; instead, many of them buy his records and turn up to his shows for nothing more than good old fashioned rock and roll. He’s more than happy to oblige, too; on his most recent tour of the UK, in the summer of 2011, he performed epic, career-spanning sets to the delight of packed theatres, proving that his appeal is not just limited to the U.S. With his twentieth studio album set for this Autumn, it won’t be too long until he’s back on these shores - news that will thrill his cult following over here.

Seeing John Mellencamp was never a goal of mine, nor was it truly an interest of mine; however, my dad is a huge fan of John Mellencamp, so I was dragged to a live set to keep my dad company. Luckily it turned out to be a pleasant surprise and a great experience to have shared with my dad. As we filled into the venue, the first thing I noticed was how I may or may not have been the youngest person there. Most of the people were around my dad’s age, but there was still that high excitement of anticipation of the coming show. The anticipation and cheers were matched by the high energy from the moment the band started to play. They opened with “Small Town,” and Mellencamp was center stage playing his guitar. The entire venue was filled with people having a good time, both on and off stage. I was surprised to realize that I really knew a good amount of the songs that he performed, even to a point where I was singing along. Despite no longer being at the absolute height of his music career, his vocals were so on point, sound exactly the same as his younger days. Clearly a seasoned performer who knows how to give the audience what they want.

The opening act for the show was actually a 25-minute long documentary it was quite boring most people in the crowd were talking through it. A few of the crowd were being disruptive and security did nothing. One joker kept booing Mellencamp, another lady kept getting out of her seat and moving forwards to record her own video and pictures and blocking the view of us who stayed in our area.

Mellencamp himself was great. He sounded awesome, did all the favorite songs, talked with the audience, told a hilarious joke about the US/Canada proposed wall, and was a fun guy to watch. Some of the loudest sing-along segments I've ever seen too.

It was a 90 minute or so set once the documentary was over, and no encores, however. So not a very long concert.

Still worth going if you like his music. I still enjoyed myself.

Ps - at least at TD place you were only allowed a drink in a cup, no water bottles allowed.

The show started about 5 minutes late with a "movie" showing the background and life of John Mellencamp. It lasted 30 minutes, the sound was horrible and it was difficult to see the pictures. It was dissappointing it was so long as We all paid good money to see a musical concert not to watch a 30 minute movie. Once the band started it was a great show. John didn't talk much except for a small story about his Grandmother and introducing himself which was fine. He played all the big hits except for one and many new and not so common songs. The concert ended in under 90 minutes and though there was lots of shouting and cheering, the lights came up and it was over. I really expected him to come back out for an encore of the song he was known for and hadn't sang during the evening. When playing it was great, though short and the movie was way too long to see while waiting for him to perform.

I saw Mellencamp in 1985 in Chattanooga. I wasn't a fan of his at the time, didn't own any of his albums, but I did know his songs that played on the radio. I got tickets and went only because it was something to do. Wow, that was one of my good choices. He had no opening act and except for a 5-10 minute break he had to take to run to the bathroom, he and his band lit up the arena for nearly 3.5 hours. From that day on, I was a Mellencamp fan. Some 500 concerts later, that show still ranks in my Top 3 of all time. Take some advice and listen to the "Uh, huh" and "Scarecrow" album and hear what a very tight band sounds like. Then catch him live, you won't see great live shows like him very often, especially now with computer generated music and autotune vocals running rampant in music today.

I loved the show! It did start promptly at 8:00pm, with a documentary film, which was nice. It got people in their seats before he actually came on stage. He performed many of his oldie-but-goodie songs and several new songs. John engaged the audience with a few stories, but spent most of the show singing. The acoustics at our venue were fantastic- so everything sounded perfect. I really really enjoyed hearing the songs I grew up listening to. Unfortunately, some of my favorite songs never received much airplay so weren’t included in the show. But the songs he did play, brought down the house. I’d highly recommend seeing the show if you have the chance!

The show began promptly at 8...with a 30 minute documentary about John Mellencamp. It was boring. Every time it faded out the crowd cheered thinking "Now the show will start!" But it kept going! The concert goers were annoyed and bored.

The concert itself lasted about 90 minutes. It was a good show, John took one short break while his keyboardist and violinist played very very well.

He did most of the hits I could think of and a bunch of songs I'd never heard before. A mix of new and old. There was no encore, which was a tad disappointing for the price of the tickets and given length of the actual concert.

Can't say I'd recommend it at the price of entry.

What a wonderful show!! I have been desperate to see John for only the second time for many years and I wasn't disappointed. The show begins with a film showing the long history of this great artist and then the band comes on and what a band. They were brilliant and so enthusiastic with the electric fiddle played bouncing around the stage. They are all talented musicians in their own right but in combination with John's great songs they were phenomenal. John interacted with the audience a little but this was about his music and we got plenty of that. What an incredible show, would love him to bring it to the UK, I would be first in line to see it again!!

This was my first time seeing John Mellencamp in concert. I did not really have the money to go to concerts growing up. But all I can say is I wish u could have, but I'm just glad I got to see him perform. He still sounds amazing even at a ripe 68 years old. The entire auditorium was singing the choruses fo songs for him. It was truly amazing. John Mellencamp was my favorite artist as I was growing up. I remember telling my mom I think Mellencamp deserves the the title of the king more than Elvis. Anyways, if anyone gets the chance to go and experience John in concert, do yourself the favor and go. You won't be let down.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — On a breezy Sunday afternoon in May — a day off from his Live and in Person tour — John Mellencamp descended the golf cart he uses to navigate his expansive, sylvan estate in Bloomington, Ind. In a black zip-up sweater, black track pants and a graying, tousled pompadour, he climbed to the top floor of his barn-like art studio, constructed by Amish builders two decades ago, and cracked a 7.5-ounce can of Coca-Cola.

“Do you mind if I smoke?”

Said by anyone else, this nicety is unremarkable. But coming from Mellencamp, an intractable firebrand and unrepentant nicotine addict who once declared, “I’m still smoking. I’m a f— ass—,” to Details magazine shortly after he had a heart attack in the ’90s, the conscientious remark was unexpected. Historically, he hasn’t seemed to care what anyone thinks about him or his smoking.

Since achieving fame in the early ’80s, the “ Jack & Diane ” singer has been many things — working-class hero, Farm Aid activist, tabloid fodder — but polite isn’t one of them. Throughout the years, Mellencamp has been a human battering ram against Republicans who’ve attempted to twist his progressive populist anthems into 10 cent expressions of patriotism. Last year, during his Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction speech for his entertainment lawyer Allen Grubman, he decried antisemitism in the wake of Kanye West’s public meltdown (“F— antisemitism, and f— anybody who says anything in that manner,” Mellencamp declared). “Keep slugging,” he told farmers gathered at a climate action protest in March in Washington, D.C.

Seated at a long table, a glass ashtray and blue pack of American Spirit cigarettes within reach, Mellencamp, 71, spoke with a geniality that belied his outspoken reputation. Perhaps it was the setting. His “art barn,” filled with the songs of neighboring birds, chic Turkish rugs, expensive candles and masculine touches — dark woods, Mellencamp’s own moody artwork, an oversize framed poster of James Dean — is the musician’s “favorite place to be.”

On June 16, Mellencamp will release his 25th studio album, “Orpheus Descending,” which continues the sobering lyrical themes and Delta blues-centric sound of last year’s “Strictly a One-Eyed Jack.” Recorded with his longtime Indiana band in his studio near Bloomington, it’s laced with social and political commentary and moments of evident heartache. The album’s indictments of America’s failures are no different from his songs like “ Pink Houses ,” but their messages are barer and nearly impossible to misinterpret. The singer summarizes its core message, drawn from the Greek myth, succinctly. “Don’t look back,” he said. “There’s nothing back there worth keeping.”

However, in our almost two-hour exchange, he freely recalled the past, like growing up in the idyllic postage stamp that is Seymour, Ind. More recent matters surfaced too, such as the start of a new-ish relationship with a 57-year-old woman who lives in New York City, whom he declined to name.

“I’m a terrible boyfriend,” he admitted. He said he’s been dating around since his third marriage, to model Elaine Irwin, ended in 2011 — among his famous flames, actor Meg Ryan and model Christie Brinkley — making up for lost time as he sees it, as he was married for most of the years between ages 18 and 60. “You have an awfully pretty face,” he blurted out to me at one point, before adding, “I shouldn’t say that, I guess.” About his romantic life, he said, “I’m doing what you probably did in college, which I didn’t do [at that age].”

“Well,” he quickly noted. “I cheated.”

Mellencamp is an animate vessel of contradictions that sets him in relief from the everyday people and issues he sings about. (One of his five children is Teddi Mellencamp Arroyave, an influencer who appeared on three seasons of “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.”)

Since releasing the song “ I Always Lie to Strangers ” last year, he’s been preoccupied with dishonesty and how it plays out in public and private forums. “We’ve been lied to by schools, by the government, by the f— laws we live under, by men, by women, our churches and families,” he said. “We are all in solitary confinement inside our own bodies.”

Two people appear on a TV talk show.

However, the blue-collar champion also confessed that decades of wealth and privilege have made him dependent on his staff. When he’s on tour, a personal assistant helps with everything from his wellness rituals, including stretching, meditation and diet, to the way he prefers his hotel rooms to be styled. “You know, I’ve never written a check,” he said. When he decided to try to renew his driver’s license on his own a few years ago, he didn’t know that he had to bring money; the people at the Bloomington DMV that day found their local celebrity panhandling for dollars.

Is Mellencamp a salt-of-the-earth guy who remained in Indiana and found success against all odds? Or is he a private-jet playboy flitting about with models and influencers? Can one be both?

“He knows where he came from, he never forgot that,” his friend Billy Joel said in a phone interview. “He’s always rooting for the underdog, and when people have a tough time, he can relate to it.”

Along with Willie Nelson and Neil Young , Mellencamp co-founded Farm Aid in 1985 with the goal of helping family farmers amid widespread foreclosures under Ronald Reagan’s economic policies. Today, his commitment to the cause has lasted longer than any of his marriages. And Mellencamp views his own life as totally improbable, beyond its rags-to-riches bona fides.

He was born with spina bifida and had experimental surgery at Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis, along with four other infants. “Three of them died on the operating table,” he said. “Another girl lived to be about 16, and I made it. So you’re looking at the luckiest guy in the world. In 1951, they operated on people with pinking shears and screwdrivers.”

Since climbing to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with “American Fool” in 1982, Mellencamp (then known as John Cougar, née Johnny Cougar, and later John Cougar Mellencamp) has been the underdog of his heartland rock cohort, someone who’s navigated a singular river from pop star to Americana pioneer and cantankerous folk singer. He famously ejected a skeptical record executive from the “American Fool” sessions and has denied any label input since, but he has never started his own artist-run label, à la his late friend John Prine, because he doesn’t want to be involved in “the business of selling.”

“I don’t like businessmen, and I don’t like cops. They’re dangerous people.”

He may be less celebrated than Bruce Springsteen — the duo recorded “Did You Say Such a Thing” and “Wasted Days” for last year’s “Strictly a One-Eyed Jack” — but he prefers his underdog status. “I’ve always been an outsider; I’m going to stay an outsider,” he said.

“He is just so true to his path, for better or worse,” country star Keith Urban tells The Times.

In 1988, when Urban was playing in a bar band in Australia, he watched Mellencamp on the Lonesome Jubilee tour from the nosebleeds. At the time, Urban said he wasn’t sure what direction he should take in his life and career. “John walks out onstage with the best band I’ve ever seen; it was the defining Mellencamp band with Kenny Aronoff on drums, Toby Myers on bass, Larry Crane, Mike Wanchic, Lisa Germano on fiddle, John Cascella on accordion,” he recalled. “I looked onstage and thought, ‘Oh, I get it. You take your influences, put them all together and make your own sound and do your own thing. That’s what you gotta do, Keith.’ And it was profound. It was literally like the clouds parted.”

Two men perform onstage.

Mellencamp’s 2023 tour, which has a conceptual element that involves scenes from such favorite classic movies as “Hud” and “The Grapes of Wrath” and an elaborate set filled with antique-style lights and mannequins of film characters, is a chance for fans to “walk into John Mellencamp’s world.” “The goal was, ‘OK, you’re not walking into a concert. It’s more of a performance, like theater,’” he said. “But as we go along, it’s turning into more of a concert, because it’s just too hard to try to challenge the audience.”

At concerts in Los Angeles and Evansville, Ind, his most enthusiastic, on-their-feet responses from crowds were for hits like “ Small Town ” and “Hurts So Good,” though his efforts to subvert that pattern were obvious. He transformed his barn-burner “Jack & Diane” into a minimalist guy-with-a-guitar folk song. A compassionate anecdote about a homeless woman he met in Oregon preceded “The Eyes of Portland,” a well-intentioned if lyrically ham-fisted protest song from “Orpheus Descending.” However, “They don’t really want to hear new songs,” he conceded. “They want to hear the songs they know.”

That hasn’t stopped him from speaking his mind. “It’s a woman’s body and she should be able to do what she wants,” he said of the recent wave of anti-abortion legislation. “How in the f— can you say, ‘Oh, you can’t kill babies,’ but then you want guns for everybody?” And politicians who offer thoughts and prayers in the wake of mass shootings? “That, to me, just says you don’t care.”

After a diatribe about how Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg should’ve resigned (“her ego wouldn’t let her stop”), he proclaimed of the Supreme Court: “Get rid of it. It’s just another branch of the government that doesn’t work.

“Just mind your own business, leave other people alone and help your neighbor if you can,” he added of his general outlook.

On an average day, when he’s not making a record or on tour, Mellencamp works in his art studio from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m., then exercises, eats dinner and unwinds. This evening, he’ll have some soup and watch “the old people news” (“60 Minutes”).

In recent performances, Mellencamp shared an anecdote about the lifespan of his relatives. His grandmother lived to be 100. On this day, he said that his dad was 93 and had “two or three girlfriends.”

“I don’t know that they’re girlfriends in the traditional sense, but they take care of him. They go out to dinner with him and drive him places.”

Mellencamp said that he’s been smoking since he was 10 and that he won’t quit. However, he’s “proud to say that I just had my lungs MRI’ed and they look like kids’ lungs,” he said while puffing on a cigarette. “The doctors don’t understand it.”

Will he be the statistical anomaly who evades the deadly effects of smoking? “They’ll get me somewhere else,” he said. “Cigarettes have a way of working their way around.”

John Mellencamp Announces 2023 Tour & Performs The Hits At The Rock Hall

By Rebekah Gonzalez

September 30, 2022

does john mellencamp tour

To celebrate the opening of Legends of Rock: John Mellencamp , the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's newest permanent exhibition, Mellencamp himself performed a special live edition of iHeartRadio ICONS at the Rock Hall on the exhibits launch day, Thursday, September 29th.

Fans were able to tune into the exclusive event on the iHeartRadio app via iHeartRadio's  The Classic Rock Channel to hear the legendary singer-songwriter perform some of his biggest hits, make exciting new announcements, and answer some questions from Jim Kerr .

To kick off the night, Mellencamp treated the enthusiastic crowd with a performance of his hit "Small Town" off of 1985's Scarecrow followed by "I Always Lie To Strangers" from his latest album Strictly a One-Eyed Jack . Released in January 2022, it marked the singer-songwriter's 24th studio album.

Kerr started off the conversation by pointing out how engaged the crowd was. "You could see everybody singing right along with you," Kerr said before asking Mellencamp about the inspiration behind the upcoming reissue of Scarecrow .

"I did it," Mellencamp simply replied, causing laughter to errupt from the crowd. " They wanted to, so... I don't like to look back. I wrote those songs a long time ago, I played those songs and I'm always looking forward. I'm always thinking about what's coming next as opposed to what's happened." He continued, "But if the market company deems that people want to have this kind of collectors thing then it's fine to me."

The recently announced deluxe reissue contains a two-CD box set with a remastered version of the album and alternate versions of some of the songs that got Mellencamp inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008.

"Can you take us back to that night... to when Billy Joel inducted you?" asked Kerr. Starting off with a wistful laugh, Mellencamp gave another charmingly coy answer, "Yeah. I was there, you know. I remember being there and I remember I didn't go through the red carpet. I went through the back door and they went "Whoa, you can't come in here." And I said, "I'm getting inducted tonight,'" but the singer didn't have a pass. He eventually got into the ceremony but hearing how he almost wasn't let in is pretty hilarious considering he now has a part of the Rock Hall dedicated to his work.

One of the items included in the museum, contributed by Mellencamp himself, is his very first royalty check. "Which was for, what? $27 or something like that," Kerr pointed out. "But when you opened it up it must've felt like a million bucks."

"No," Mellencamp responded, much to the delight of the crowd. Kerr then transitioned the event back to the performance, letting the music do all the talking for Mellencamp.

The singer-songwriter then performed 1987's "Check It Out" from The Lonesome Jubilee and "Jack & Diane" from 1982's American Fool, which prompted a full-blown sing-a-long from the fans.

Mellencamp took another quick break to discuss some of his upcoming projects including Farm Aid , which he launched with Willie Nelson and Neil Young , and a 265-page coffee table book full of his paintings . He also shared that he has finished writing an album but gave no further details about its release.

Kerr then had the honor of confirming Mellencamp's upcoming "Live and In Person" Tour which will see the singer play 76 nights starting February 23rd, 2023.

To introduce his penultimate song, Mellencamp said this track "seems more pertinent today than I did when I wrote it," before launching into "Crumblin' Down" which was released in 1983 and featured on the album Uh-huh . Also from the same album, Mellencamp finished his set with the song "Pink Houses."

John Mellencamp oozes plenty of heart — and heartland — in rousing Chicago Theatre show

Mellencamp stuck to his tried-and-true songbook, with just two songs from his latest album “strictly a one-eyed jack.”.

John Mellencamp had a few PSAs for the crowd Thursday night as the blue-collar bard kicked off a three-night stand at the Chicago Theatre. “Things might get a little political.” “If you’re going to yell during the quiet songs you might as well leave.” And, perhaps his most affirmative warning, “This is not a concert, it’s a performance.”

True to his words, the two-hour production was a flip of the script for the rocker, who is now five decades into touring. Though billed as a standard “live and in person” night with the musician, it also had the air of a night at the movies, an overt nod to the 76-date tour’s corporate sponsor, Turner Classic Movies. It’s the first time Mellencamp has done such a thing, as the notorious corporate dodger has rebuffed any formal tour backing for years. Though, Mellencamp and TCM have become interesting bedfellows in the featured attraction, putting an emphasis on the singer-songwriter’s reputation as another one of America’s great storytellers.

John Mellencamp performs to a sold-out crowd at the Chicago Theatre on Thursday night.

With no opener for the evening, the 30-minute preview to the 19-song showdown was a montage of classic films embedded with Mellencamp’s voiceover commentary, particularly honing in on James Dean’s body of work. For years, the rabble-rousing, cussing, smoking frontman with the blue jeans and white T-shirt has played his own version of the quintessential rebel, and that throughline was even more abundant on this night as the Hoosier fully became enmeshed with his Hollywood alter ego.

Once the curtain did drop, the stage further paid homage to this mix of classic rock and classic movies with Tungsten lights that could’ve been pulled from a soundstage and a backdrop and larger-than-life mannequins that resurrected “A Streetcar Named Desire.” The over-the-top theatrics just begged for some notes of “Ghost Brothers of Darkland County,” the American gothic musical Mellencamp wrote with Stephen King and T Bone Burnett a decade ago.

Rather, Mellencamp stuck to his tried-and-true songbook, with just two songs from his latest album “Strictly A One-Eyed Jack.” He relied heavily on landmark gems like a surprise solo acoustic version of “Jack & Diane” and entrants from 1985’s impeccable “Scarecrow” (reissued as a box set last November) and 1987’s “The Lonesome Jubilee.” Seven of the 19 tracks were from those two albums; eight if you count the solemn moment during the show when a recording played actress Joanne Woodward reciting Mellencamp’s poignant lyrics to “The Real Life” as violinist/mandolinist Lisa Germano and accordion player Troye Kinnett provided an intimate soundtrack to the narration.

“This is not a concert, it’s a performance,” John Mellencamp proclaimed Thursday night at the Chicago Theatre to an adoring crowd.

As part of the ensemble supporting Mellencamp, each of the six musicians added undeniable depth and powerhouse sound to the performance, reworking arrangements to really hone in on their rootsy, bluesy, even boogie woogie (“Crumblin’ Down”) foundations as Mellencamp’s now pronounced gravelly voice — result of years committed to his second love, smoking — gave them a rugged finish.

While guitarist Mike Wanchic has been Mellencamp’s wingman for 50 years, the return of Germano after a 29-year absence was a huge boon, as evidenced in the uproarious applause any time she had a solo. As one of the sound architects of Mellencamp’s formative albums, her return brought a full-circle moment at a time that feels like the American treasure is reflecting on the legacy he will leave behind.

A legacy that includes, for example, making a recent donation of his archives to the University of Indiana in his hometown of Bloomington, or a now permanent exhibition at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. But also what he chooses to write about and discuss using his platform, as he has done for decades rallying for American farmworkers.

Mellencamp’s focus now turns to what it means to be living in the land of the free. A newer, as of yet unreleased song, “The Eyes of Portland” was most evocative of the message, a Bob Dylan-esque, harmonica-filled monologue pondering the homelessness he witnessed while visiting the West Coast city, asking the audience, “Is this the kind of country we want to live in?”

Inside John Mellencamp’s Remote Montecito Home

By Elizabeth Quinn Brown

John Mellencamp

On his 1983 album, Uh-Huh , John Mellencamp sang, “Little pink houses for you and me, oh yeah, for you and me.” But, in 2022, the iconic musician is humming about a little white house in Montecito, California.

“Quite honestly, I see it as a place for me to go with an invited guest,” he explains, from his suite at the Hotel Bel-Air in Los Angeles. “It does have a very romantic feel to it. I’m above the clouds. The view is like, wow.”

Put more specifically, the former ranch is positioned on one of the peaks of Santa Barbara’s Toro Canyon, a perch which yields bracing views all the way out to the Pacific Ocean. Situated on six acres, the retreat is a remote one. “You get this thing, particularly at night when the winds blow. . . it takes a certain kind of colorful person to want to be up there [at the very top].”

Mellencamp recruited his roadies to redo the three-bedroom house in three weeks, repainting the interiors in fresh white (including the brick and the wood beams). A storage room was reimagined as an art studio for Mellencamp, whose paintings explore Americana through a lens influenced by the German expressionists of the 1900s. (“That’s what I do, I paint,” he says. “I’m a singer-songwriter, that’s my real job, but I paint every day. I’m very lucky, I’ve lived an artist’s life.”)

As with his other homes (which include residences in Indiana and New York ), Mellencamp collaborated with his friend of 45 years, Trevor Goff. Here, Goff recreated his signature lived-in interiors: masculine, shabby furnishings with scatterings of industrialized references (for example, the Ridley motorcycle in the living room). Some of the pieces were sourced from Mellencamp’s three warehouses of furniture in Bloomington, Indiana, while others were purchased from purveyors such as L.A.’s Big Daddy’s Antiques. “They have really odd, old, one-of-a-kind pieces of furniture,” Mellencamp explains. “Stuff you don’t see everywhere, [and] Trevor knows what I like.”

Mellencamp is particularly fond of his Montecito living room, which is decorated with brown leather chairs and tattered rugs. Dark details, like hanging steel lights, punctuate the space. Some of the musician’s works can be seen on the walls, interspersed with softer pieces of art. (For example, a modern impressionistic painting by Donna Schuster can be seen above the mantle.) But the defining characteristic of the interior is a projector and screen setup. “It’s fantastic,” Mellencamp says. “I spend a lot of time watching old films. It’s really [cozy] at night. During the day. . . you don’t even see that it’s there.”

Fittingly, it was a 1961 western starring Marlon Brando that inspired Mellencamp’s Montecito home purchase. He remembers discussing it with Goff, who was the one to locate the charming property in the first place: “I said, look, there’s a movie called One-Eyed Jacks and, in the movie, Karl Malden lives in this little adobe right on the ocean. And I said, I’ll tell you what, if you find that little, teeny Spanish house. . . I don’t want a great big house, I’ve got enough of those.”

John Mellencamp’s home in Montecito, California, is situated on six acres of land at a mountainous peak within Santa Barbara’s Toro Canyon. “All my houses are art projects,” Mellencamp reflects.

Designer Trevor Goff honored the house’s bones when thinking of his own decor scheme. The kitchen’s island and nearby light fixture came with it, as did the stained glass window.

The primary bedroom nods to the house’s Spanish influence, in part thanks to the iron canopy bed. This room’s items were sourced from John Mellencamp’s three warehouses in Bloomington, Indiana, Big Daddy’s Antiques in Los Angeles, and The Well in Santa Barbara.

As in the kitchen, the bathroom’s light fixture came with the house, although it has been refreshed with filament bulbs. The white brick and tiles work in contrast to the dark wood details.

There’s no place like John Mellencamp’s perch in Montecito, California. The former ranch is romantic and remote.

Springsteen tour relaunches in Phoenix. Fans staying on 'ride as long as it's going'

4 minute read.

Let's do it again.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band are set to relaunch their tour Tuesday, March 19, at the Footprint Center in Phoenix after shows were postponed due to Springsteen's bout with peptic ulcer disease.

“People are thrilled,” said Audrey Hunn, administrator of the Calling All Bruce Springsteen Fans! Facebook group. “When it first happened, a lot people weren't really sure that he was going to come back. Bruce is going to want to make it up to people, especially the cities he had to cancel twice."

The Phoenix show will be the first for Springsteen and the E Street Band since Sept. 3, 2023, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford. After that show, Springsteen said he was postponing the rest of the band's September concerts .

On Sept. 27, shows for the rest of the year were postponed .

“I got to tell you the truth, we had no idea how much pain (Springsteen) was in ,” said Steven Van Zandt to USA Today at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in November. “It was remarkable when we found out that he had been in pain for five shows at least. He is just a tough guy.”

Problems on tour

Peptic ulcer disease is characterized by discontinuation in the inner lining of the gastrointestinal tract because of gastric acid secretion or pepsin, according to the National Library of Medicine . Those with it suffer pain after meals in a span 15 minutes to two or three hours after eating.

Springsteen, 74, said he had “a bitch of a bellyache” that was “unfortunately rocking my internal world” on the Oct. 9 edition of his SiriusXM “From My Home to Yours” deejay show .

The Springsteen and E Street Band tour last year was marked by several postponements and cancellations. Two shows at Citizens Bank Ballpark last August were postponed due to the Boss “having been taken ill,” according to Springsteen's social media handles.

Three other 2023 shows — March 9 at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio; March 12 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut; and March 14 at the MVP Arena in Albany, New York — were also postponed due to an undisclosed illness.

Multiple band members missed shows on the 2023 tour's U.S. arena leg due to COVID, including Van Zandt, Nils Lofgren, Jake Clemons and Soozie Tyrell.

So the upcoming tour, which heads to Europe this summer after arena shows in the U.S. is being viewed as a second chance by fans. Recordings of the upcoming shows are available for pre-order as CDs or hi-res downloads via Nugs.net . The entire tour, along with the Live Archive Series, can be streamed on demand with a Nugs.net subscription.

“Seeing Bruce and the greatest band in the land take the stage again in Phoenix is going to be special and definitely should have new meaning not just for all Springsteen fans, but for Bruce and the band as well,” said Howie Chaz, founder of the Spring-Nuts Springsteen Facebook group, via email from Phoenix. “Once again it’s an important reminder how nothing is guaranteed and how we can take things for granted. So happy to see Bruce happy and healthy and doing what he does better than anyone. Objectively speaking, of course (smiley face emoji).”

Return to the stage in late 2023

Springsteen made his return to the concert stage when he sang backup Oct. 29 with the unlikely grouping of Tony Orlando, Patti Scialfa and Van Zandt for Freedom Bremner and Mark Rivera's version of “With a Little Help from My Friends” at the New Jersey Hall of Fame Class of 2023 induction ceremony.

The next week he surprised the audience on Nov. 6 at the Stand Up for Heroes veterans' fundraiser for the Bob Woodruff Foundation at Lincoln Center's David Geffen Hall in New York City. Springsteen joined John Mellencamp for the song “Wasted Days” from Mellencamp's 2022 album, “Strictly a One-Eyed Jack,” then stuck around to perform four solo acoustic songs, and tell off-color jokes.

Springsteen joined Mellencamp on stage March 10, 2024 , for “Pink Houses” at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark.

As for the upcoming tour, there's a new wrinkle to pre-show hype: filmed messages from the Boss.

“Bright light city gonna set my soul, gonna set my soul on fire – viva, viva Las Vegas!” said Springsteen in his white cowboy hat on an Instagram reel dropped Monday, March 18. “Las Vegas, this is Bruce Springsteen and I'm coming to see you on Friday night and I want you to be prepared to be ready and to be very afraid because we are going to rock you into the ground. I'll see you there, you've been warned!”

Springsteen delivered a similar delivered a video message to fans on March 17 to fans attending the Footprint Center show in Phoenix .

“I will stay on this ride as long as it's still going,” Hunn said.
