In the IELTS Speaking section, one of the most common type of Question is the Cue Card Speaking prompt. The IELTS Cue Card topics will prompt you to formulate a response and speak on the given topic. Sample Answer 1

Located in the northeastern part of Africa, Egypt is home to one of the world’s earliest and most modern societies. Libya borders it on the west, Sudan on the south, and the Red Sea and Israel on the east. Without the Nile River, the country would become a desert.

Egypt is a country that boasts of intellectual and cultural homogeneity. With the majority of people being Muslims, the dominant culture of this democratic republic is Islamic and the official language is Arabic. The ethnicity is a mixture of the African population and Arab descent. Egyptians live in close relation with nature. The country has a wide variety of animals and plants, like jackals, gazelles, crocodiles, and cobras and its geographical relief varies from oases, deserts, mountains, coastal areas, river islands, and wetlands.

Apart from its oil and gas exports, Egypt also attracts a large number of tourists from all over the world. One of the world’s seven wonders, the Great Pyramid and Sphinx of Giza, is a thrilling sight to behold. The blue waters of the Nile entice visitors as they sail in the Felucca, a traditional boat. Cairo, the country’s capital, offers many exciting sights from the Cairo Tower. Besides these, one can explore the various museums, mosques and markets to find out more about the culture and history of the place.

Certain chapters and personalities of history allure me, one of them being Cleopatra and her reign in Egypt. Claimed to be the prototype of a femme fatale, she is the main reason I want to visit Egypt. Other than that, I want to explore the Sahara Desert that comprises a part of Egypt, the pyramids, the secrets of the mummies and experience the rich culture firsthand.

Sample Answer 2

Since I was a child, France has been on the top of my travel bucket list, and Paris has been my dream destination. I dreamt of visiting the city once I started to earn. It may sound so cliché, but everyone wants to dream big.

Paris, one of the most visited cities in France, is a beautiful city. It is acknowledged by the names like “The City of Romance” and “The City of Light”, which clearly defines its magnificence. It is also known as the fashion capital of the country. It has beautiful architecture and museums. One of the most famous monuments is the Eiffel Tower.

The city is famous for its confectionaries, mainly macaroons and croissants. So when I visit the place, which one day I definitely will, I have plans to savour every best item of that city, visit every corner of the country and spend a night watching the Eiffel Tower sipping champagne.

One of the reasons I want to visit France is that it has lured me greatly. The country represents elegance. You will never see a French person out of style. They may seem ignorant but will never sugarcoat lies. The beauty, the art, the culture and the food has gained my special attention. Famous artists like Eugene Delacroix, Henri De Toulouse-Lautrec and many others belong to this country of splendour and style. Their paintings are displayed in museums and art galleries. The city’s filled with beautiful cafes to sit and sip coffee. It might look big, but it actually is a very small city where you can familiarise yourself easily. All these make me want to visit the country.

Elegance: tasteful richness of design or ornamentation the sumptuous elegance of the furnishings Eg: The decoration of the room reflects elegance.
Confectionaries: sweets and chocolates considered collectively. Eg: She is a fan of confectionaries.
Croissants: a French crescent-shaped roll made of sweet flaky yeast dough, eaten for breakfast. Eg: She decided to make croissants to surprise her mother.
Cliche: a phrase or opinion that is overused and betrays a lack of original thought. Eg: This storyline is bit of a cliche.

Describe a Foreign Country: Speaking Part 2

In the IELTS speaking part 2 you may be given a cue card that asks you to describe a country . Now this may be a country you have visited , a country in which you have lived , or a country you want to visit . There are various possibilities, and so it is important you analyze the question carefully. The question we are going to tackle today, however, is describe a foreign country you have never been to.

Analyze the Question

So here is the cue card:

Describe a foreign country you have never been to. You should say: where the country is when you will go there why you would like to go there and explain why this is a good country to visit.

You must first consider what you need to say, and the cue card format is pretty simple. However, don’t let your imagination wander too far. Before you plan an answer, you must make note of the essential points .

The key things you should talk about are:

where – ie location (Asia? Europe?)
when – ie a time (next summer, when I get the chance)
why – this may be the part you will speak about most
why – this is also an important part that you might want to talk about at length

Making Notes

You should begin by making notes on these points. For me, I’m going to choose New Zealand. It’s a country I’ve wanted to visit since I was a child, and I’ve never managed to travel there. I feel it is a country I could talk about comfortably. However, you should choose a country you think is best for you to describe. Look at the points discussed above – can you provide reasonable detail for each of them? If not, then choose a different country.

So looking at the key areas to discuss:

Where is New Zealand? It’s on the continent of Oceania, in the Southwestern Pacific Ocean. It is in the Southern hemisphere, and the nearest country is Australia.
When will I go there? I would like to go in the next few years. This year seems unlikely, but maybe next year or the one after that. (I can talk about work commitments here.)
Why would I like to go? Because it looks like it is a really beautiful place. It seems to have an interesting climate, a fascinating culture, and lots of cool animals to see.
Why is it a good place to visit? Because it is a modern, advanced nation with a good tourist infrastructure.

Sample Answer

One country that I’ve never been to is New Zealand. It’s located in the Southern Hemisphere, on the continent of Oceania, and its nearest neighbor is Australia. It is quite far away from where I live, so I haven’t yet had the chance to visit. I would like to go there in future, though. This year I will be too busy working but maybe I will get the chance to visit next year, or the year after that. There are many reasons that I would like to visit New Zealand. For one thing, it looks like a stunningly beautiful country. Its natural scenery seems captivating to me, and I’d love to travel around seeing the mountains and rugged coastline. In these places, there are many amazing animals to see, and I’m a big fan of wildlife watching. In addition, New Zealand has a long and fascinating history, which I’d like to explore. New Zealand seems like a good country to visit for those reasons, as well as because it is a modern nation with a good tourist infrastructure. People there speak English, which is also a bonus.

Language Points

Be careful to use your vocabulary accurately and without repetition. When describing a country you may be tempted to over-use words like “beautiful” and “interesting”. You can try to use synonyms to help avoid these problems. Remember that this is a good chance to incorporate some appropriate adjectives and adverbs to give your language more color. There is no need for specialist vocabulary, but any terms that you remember related to geography may come in very useful.

You can use Google to find ideas for your speech. When practicing, it might be useful to use Wikipedia for terms related to the geography or culture of a country. Of course, it is important not to copy directly from any source, but you can see how language is used in such descriptions.

IELTS Cue Card Sample Question – Describe a Country that You Want to Visit

One of the areas where you should focus your time and attention while studying for the IELTS test is the ‘cue card’ component, often known as the IELTS Speaking Part 2 . It is a must that you maximize your time because this component of the test is only two minutes long.

What is the IELTS Cue Card Question?

How to answer this specific question: “describe a country that you want to visit”, sample response 1: , sample response 2:, vocabulary list to answer the question: “describe a country that you want to visit”.

You will be presented with a task card on a specific topic in the second portion of the IELTS Speaking Test . The subject of your speech is written on this card, which is also known as the ‘cue card.’

This section of the IELTS Speaking Test allows you to talk about a topic for a longer period of time. You have one minute to prepare to speak on the cue card’s topic. You will be provided a pencil and paper to take notes with.

After your speech, the examiner might ask you one or two follow-up questions about the same topic. The IELTS Cue Card component takes about 3-4 minutes to complete.

Describe a Country that You Want to Visit

Guidelines to answer this question

You should say:

What country this is
How you know about this country
When you plan to visit this country

And explain why you want to go to this country.

Think of a country that you have been intending to visit. It could be any country. However, you have to make sure that you have enough knowledge about this country so you would have a lot to discuss and share later on.
The moment you have a country in mind, stick to it and start writing down notes. Remember that you have only a minute to prepare.
Take notes on what country it is and in which continent it is located. Include how you come to know about the country and the things that make it appealing and interesting to you.
Remember to mention too when you plan to go there. Bear in mind that you should not write sentences, just keywords and phrases.
Employ sophisticated vocabulary. Form complex grammar structures as well. These will help you get a high mark in this part of the test.
Write quickly but ensure your handwriting is understandable, by you. The examiner will not mark you based on what and you write on the paper but by how you discuss the topic.
From time to time, do take a look at the notes you have written to ensure that you cover everything. It is fine. You do not get deductions if you do so.

Sample Responses: “Describe a Country that You Want to Visit”

“In my inquisitive mind, I want to see every place on the planet, but I won’t be able to do so because I don’t have an endless supply of money or all the time in the world. So, to put my goals into perspective, I want to visit at least 5 to 6 countries in the next few years, with Switzerland being at the top of my list.

Switzerland is unquestionably one of the most beautiful countries on the planet, and I’m awestruck by the sheer grandeur of the wide-green plains and snow-capped mountains I’ve seen on TV and in publications. One of my schoolmates used to live there with her family, and it was because of her that I became interested in this country. I’ve heard stories of her mountain skiing, fascinating excursions in the countryside, and fabulous cuisines. Despite the fact that they are merely stories and experiences, they piqued my interest in how gorgeous the country would be and how much I would like to explore it.

If all goes according to plan, I’ll be in Switzerland in the middle of next year. My parents have previously heard about my plans, and they are fine with me going with one of my close friends. As a result, I may travel to this country known for its celestial beauty, delectable chocolates, and beautiful watches with Elizabeth, who also wishes to travel to Switzerland with me.

Visiting Switzerland, I suppose, would be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me. It will provide fascinating and thrilling adventures while also allowing me to realize my dreams. I’ve also learned and heard a lot about incomparable Swiss timepieces and Swiss people’s punctuality, which I’d like to see for myself. While in Switzerland, I’d like to take in the gorgeous scenery, culture, gastronomy, and other sights that the country has to offer.”

Follow-up Question 1:

Who do you prefer to go with when traveling, family or friends?

“It depends. I think that there are places where I want to be with my family whereas there are also places where I would prefer to be with my friends instead. Since my parents are devoted Christians and have strong religious beliefs, let’s say I would go to Israel or The Vatican, I would prefer to be with them.

On the other hand, if I want to go to Africa and explore the wildlife there, I would rather be with my friends.”

Follow-up Question 2:

Lots of countries now do not accept unvaccinated travelers, do you think that’s fair?

“Yes, I think it’s only fair. I mean if you think allowing unvaccinated travelers into your country is a threat, because of the current situation, then it is up to that country’s prerogative who to allow and who not to allow entrance. “

“Life drives us to areas we don’t want to go, whether we like it or not. Nevertheless, there are instances when we simply feel compelled to visit a specific location/country in order to improve our awareness, understanding, and respect for a country and its culture about which we already have a decent understanding. When you hear about a nation like Japan from your father so often as a child, you know it’s worth seeing at least once in your life. I intend to visit this wonderful country next year.

Japan is an East Asian country. This lovely country is located in the Pacific Ocean, off the eastern coast of the Asian continent. So, why would I want to go to Japan? I could definitely come up with thousands of answers to answer the question, such as how Japan is probably one of the most exceptional countries in the world because of its modern comfort, rich history, and culture is a perfect blend, but that doesn’t exactly capture how one should perceive Japan as a country. I could mention hundreds of words describing the delectable Japanese cuisines, but it would still fall short of portraying Japan in its real light. We can claim that Japan has some of the most beautiful buildings because of Mount Fuji, but it doesn’t begin to describe what Japan has to give the rest of the world. We could also claim that Japan is undoubtedly the world’s most resilient country because it withstood the most awful and destructive repercussions of WWII, but that still doesn’t tell much about this amazing country. Japan arguably has the world’s most beautiful cherry blossoms.

I hope to be able to visit this country next year, as it is somewhere I’ve always wanted to go. I’ve never been to a snowy country before so this is a fantastic chance for me.”

What climate do you prefer, tropical or temperate? Why?

Response: “ I think that having a tropical and temperate climate has its advantages and disadvantages. Living in a tropical country does not need a lot of adjustments when it comes to the change in climate in a year because the temperature is pretty much the same. Living in a temperate climate on the other hand is completely different. The variations in temperature are drastic and people need a lot of adjustments to adapt.”

The country that I have always wanted to go but have not visited yet is Canada. I’ve been dreaming to visit there for more than 2-3 years. Canada has lots of picturesque landscapes and it also has a varied culture.

Canada boasts that it is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. For example, Vancouver is located right on the ocean, and there are enormous snow-tipped mountains surrounding the entire city. There are a multitude of beautiful parks to walk through, and very nice beaches. Besides, all across the country there are small, picturesque towns located on mountains and valleys. In general, Canada is an incredibly clean country, which also helps its beauty.

Another reason I want to go there is to attend one of the universities there for my bachelor’s degree. I think that it would be an excellent idea to go see the school, and perhaps even meet some of the professors that teach the courses I am interested in. It would also be beneficial for me to meet other students.

For the speaking section which is only 15 minutes, you need to organize your thoughts. Not only do you need to organize it you have to sync your thoughts with your speaking. Many a time, what you think to speak doesn’t come out the way you want it to. Instead, you forget a bit of it or you may also just jumble it all. So, to avoid this type of error, you need to practice a lot. Practising sample papers and topics like “Describe a Foreign country you want to know more about”, results in good results.

How to Answer Cue Card Topics?

To answer this question. You need to prepare your answer around the points given below:-

Which country are you talking about and what is the culture like?
Where is it?
How do you come to know about it?
What is the reason of your interest in the country?

You can use the first two points in the introduction part of your speech and the 3rd point in the main body and the last point can be put at the end. Try to be authentic as much as you can. You must not memorize the answers given in the sample because you are also given follow-up questions after you have finished your speech. If you memorize the answer then giving answers for the follow-up questions will be hard for you and this will lead to losing marks that you have earned. So avoid memorizing.

I haven’t explored many countries till now, and I want to explore all the countries, irrespective of whether they are big or small. But the country I am intrigued about is, “New Zealand”. I have heard so many things about New Zealand, and all the things are in a positive direction. I have heard it all not only from friends but also from the news as well. New Zealand is the country situated like an island in the Southwestern pacific ocean.

One of my close friends shifted there for work purposes and he went there for only 1 year. But he could not compel himself to come back from the country.

It has beautiful northern lights, which we have only seen in pictures. I dream of seeing them in real life. Finland doesn’t stop us from roaming anywhere and everywhere. They believe that it is every man’s right to live freely. It permits public access to the faraway lands and water bodies. Furthermore, I am a fan of snow sports like skiing and Finland is known for being the best place for skiing.

It is the safest place to live with minimal cases of burglary and crime cases. It is the best place to work, as the Finland government announced working 4 days a week so that work-life balance was sustained. I look forward to travelling to Finland one day.

In part two of your IELTS Speaking test, you might be asked to talk about your favorite country. The cue card will probably read: “Describe your favorite country.” And it will give you some suggestions on what to say.

Which Country to Choose

For a question like this, it’s best to talk about a country you’ve already been to. This is because you can quickly remember your time there and talk about that.

However, you might want to talk about a country that you haven’t been to, but would like to visit. Or you could choose a country you love because of its movies, art, culture, weather, or food.

Of course, you can also talk about your own country, which is probably the simplest option of all.

In part two of IELTS Speaking, always choose the option that’s easiest to talk about.

Tell a Story

In part two, you should always try to tell a short story. With a simple story, you can:

Keep speaking easily for 30 seconds or more
Show that you can use good past tenses (past simple, past continuous, past perfect…)

It’s easy to tell a story about a country because you can simply remember when you visited that country and say what you did there. So before your IELTS test, prepare a few stories about countries you’ve visited.

You can then use these stories for lots of different questions. For example, you can use your country story for questions about vacations, adventures, travel, interesting experiences, food, family, friends, and more.

Focus on Vocabulary

In part two of your IELTS Speaking test, you can get a band-7 score by:

Talking for two minutes without hesitation
Using some interesting, less common vocabulary
Not making too many mistakes

One great way to prepare interesting vocabulary is to memorize word groups .

A word group is a collection of interesting words, phrases, and idioms that describe one aspect of a place, person, activity, or thing.

For example, you might prepare a ‘busy place’ word group that includes words like: ‘bustling, hectic, crowded, industrious, fast pace of life, as busy as a bee…’ and more.

You can then use this same ‘busy place’ word group to answer many different questions about places. For example:

Describe your favorite city
Describe your hometown
Describe a place you like to visit
Describe a vacation you went on
Describe a city you’d like to live in
And many more part-two questions

So for this ‘favorite country’ question, it’s a good idea to prepare a word group now that could describe a country you like.

In the example answer below, you’ll see a ‘natural place’ word group in use.

I’m going to talk about Switzerland, which is a stunningly beautiful country in the center of Europe. I love Switzerland because it has an abundance of natural beauty . Most of the country is covered by mountainous terrain and there’s so much magnificent scenery with endless spectacular views to enjoy. The whole country is full of impressive mountains and glistening lakes .

I’ve only visited Switzerland once in my life, but I will always remember that vacation. I went on a camping trip there with my family about seven years ago. I remember driving through the picturesque mountains, soaking up the incredible views . It was a real escape into the great outdoors .

We stayed at many campsites beside the quiet waters of beautiful lakes. It was wonderful to wake up in the morning to the sound of birdsong . I recall we stayed in one idyllic natural spot for many days, right next to the water. I remember sitting outside our tent in the morning, enjoying a cup of tea and looking at a breathtaking view of a massive snowcapped mountain .

We went for many hikes through forests and meadows , enjoying the fresh air, scents of the forest, and beautiful fields of wildflowers . There were many cows with little bells around their necks and we could always hear the bells ringing gently.

I think Switzerland is a fantastic place to live because it’s very safe there. To be honest, Switzerland is a little expensive and the food isn’t the best food in Europe. But when you’re there, it’s really easy to drive to neighboring countries like Italy, France, or Germany because Switzerland is right in the middle of Europe and it’s a very small country. So that’s another reason why I like it.

Well, I have always wanted to visit Japan. The first images that come to my mind when I think of Japan are those beautiful temples hidden in the hills. They have always fascinated me and I would like to visit them someday. I developed an interest in Japan during my school days. At that time, any product carrying the Made in Japan tag was quite popular in my country. I guess, that is how I started associating quality and reliability with Japan. Of course, you wouldn’t visit a country just because they make amazing gadgets. I was just trying to say that that is how I became interested in Japan. When I was at university, I had some Japanese friends. They were quite friendly and great fun to hang out. And they made me all the more interested in Japan.

The best thing about Japan is probably the fact that it is a combination of the ancient and the new. The Japanese are still very traditional, but that hasn’t prevented them from embracing modernity. They are also known for their hospitality. I am a religious person. Although I am not a practicing Buddhist I am curious about Zen Buddhism. If I get an opportunity to visit Japan, I would like to meet some Zen Buddhists, learn their traditional meditation techniques and lodge at a traditional inn where I can experience Japanese hospitality at its best.

Well, I am a travel freak person. I am bitten by travel bug.
I have a fascination for visiting different places.
Though, I have not visited many countries abroad. I have a wish to visit so many countries.
There are myriad countries in the world with different attractions like serene countryside, enthralling natural views, sky high buildings, fascinating night life, and strong historical and cultural background.
My first choice among all these attractions is Switzerland.
I have heard about it from my friends and seen it in Hollywood and Bollywood movies.
It is located in the continent of Europe.
This country is considered the heaven on the earth with rich flora, panoramic natural views and Serene Country side.
I would like to see these this heaven on the earth.
I would also like to see famous Swiss bank.
Due to these reasons, I assume it must be attracting different people around the world such as writers, photographers and the people who are admirer of nature.
I am not any of them. Still, I would definitely like to visit this country.
I have heard that it is the finest democracy in the world where every decision is taken by the people.
If people want to change the law they can change it by referendum.
I have also heard that people of Switzerland are amiable with foreigners specifically with Indians.
It is mostly famous for its green, natural, fantastic views.
I have also heard that it is having prosperous industries.
It has got minimum crime ratio.
I hope one day my dream will come true.

IELTS Speaking Part 2

Describe a foreign country you would like to go to. ( A country you have not been to yet) You should say: • what country it is (including where it is in the world) • what this country is like • what people can do in this country And explain why you would like to go to this country.

There are so many countries that I have not had a chance to go to, but one of those that I would like to visit in my upcoming trip is Myanmar.

It is located in South East Asia. The country is like Thailand 25 years ago, before shopping malls, and fastfood chains expanded in the country. Thus it remains rustic and traditional compared to the modern world.

The people here are said to be friendly; they are willing to go out of their way to show you around and they are very keen on practicing their English skills. Myanmar is famous for its ancient city named Bagan, with more than 3,000 temples which date back to the 11th century. I would particulary love to see the Shwedagon Pagoda. It is considered to be the greatest and most sacred Buddhist temple in the country. The entire structure, which dates back 2,500 years, is covered with hundreds of gold plates.

Since the country has just been opened up to the outside world, it still keeps the originality of its culture. That’s why I want to go there, to experience the country and the people before globalization changes everything.

Vocabulary:

– fastfood chain : [noun] a network of restaurants like McDonald’s, which you can find in many different places, serving food such as burgers and fries.

– rustic: [adjective] simple and typical of the countryside. Example: The old church in the small village had a rustic appearance.

– go out of their way to: [verb phrase] to make a special effort to do something. Example: The teacher went out of her way to help the students, giving free classes before the exams.

– show someone around: [verb phrase] to be a guide for somebody when they visit a new place and to show them what is interesting. Example: We were shown around the school by one of the students.

– sacred : [adjective] connected with a god , and considered to be holy. Example: In Islam, Mecca is a sacred city.

– opened up: [phrasal verb] possible to be visited. Example: The railways opened up many remote parts of the country.

– globalization: [noun] the process by which places become similar to each other all over the world. Example: You can now buy burgers in fastfood restaurants like McDonald’s all over the world, as a result of globalization .

Well, the foreign country that I want to visit is the States, which is one of the most attractive and fascinating traveling destinations for many backpackers, and I am no exception.

I think after graduating from university at the end of this year, I’m going to take a tour around the States with my girlfriend/boyfriend/parents. During my trip, I will definitely spoil myself and take part in all sorts of activities, like driving from place to place, going shopping, visiting national parks, or hanging around some world-renowned universities.

Well, I am dying to travel to the States for a number of reasons. Firstly, traveling to the States has been a long-time personal wish. Since I was little, American culture has been influencing us in almost every field, including films, music, sport, and arts, so if I have a chance, it will be great to have first-hand experience of it on my own. For example, I am a big fan of the New York Knicks; watching an NBA live game at Madison Square Garden is a must-do activity. Hopefully, my dream can come true one day.

Besides, there is a wide range of cultural and natural heritage that deserves a look. Those must-see destinations include Yellowstone Park, Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, Disneyland Theme Park, and Hollywood. I believe that my horizon can be greatly broadened.

More importantly, I am about to study in the States, and I am longing to have some experience beforehand, you know, like the American accent, local food, and customs, living habits, or just the view. My dream is to study and live in this country for a while, and traveling definitely is a part of my future plans. And then, I reckon that life may be much easier and smoother after I take this brand-new life journey.

All in all, those are the reasons why I want to travel to this country.

I love travelling. Meeting new people rejuvenates the mind and the soul. And I consider myself blessed to have itchy feet. I’ve been to some countries like the UK and Canada, but there is one place which I long to see. It is Japan.

From the moment I read about the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bomb blasts in my history classes, I’m hankering to see this place. It is a motivational story of how they regained their status in the world by rising from the ruins.

(and explain why you would like to know more about it) I’ve also read some books on the culture of Japanese people. It was fascinating. I’ve heard that they are busy people and sometimes called workaholics. Also, it is a place which is susceptible to many volcano attacks and earthquakes. It is a mystery how they manage to live amongst these constant hurdles from nature. I want to meet those people and learn about their lifestyle and working methodologies. They celebrate a flower festival called Ikebana which is spellbinding. They also celebrate the tea ceremony every season, which is one of the most riveting aspects of their culture. In fact, one of my friends who had been there got a couple of tea chocolates which tasted bitter and fueled my desire to go there. There are no extreme summers or winters, which makes it an ideal place to live. But all these are, knowledge I gathered from books and friends. So I want to go there in person and enjoy the place.

What do you think is the best way to learn about a foreign (country or) culture?

Be it language, culture, food, music or places to visit; they are generous in providing data. But, it is through interacting with a foreigner that one learns best about their culture. Interaction opens doors to unexplored pathways. It can unlock interesting facts about the other person, their approach to different things etc.

What do you think are some of the main problems people face when they work in a foreign country?

(Give a direct answer to the question) (Explain your reason or reasons) People face great challenges in getting the food they want. In most cases, people adapt themselves to the food of the foreign land. Also, there may be variations in the way they work. (Give an example) For example, Westerners enjoy the weekends compulsorily whereas Japanese may work all through the week to finish a project. Timelines for a project may vary based on the work culture. So if a person is accustomed to the western way of working, he may find it difficult to work on weekends.

Some people say that reading a book about another country or culture is the best way to learn about it. Do you agree?

But with the advent of the internet, where you can start interacting with a foreigner in no time, people no longer read books. Also, when searching for a particular country, the internet displays pictures of the foreign land, its people, mode of travel, places to stay and must-see places. One may have to buy separate books for gaining information about each of these. Also, not all information on the internet can be found in books.

Sample Answer

I love traveling and exploring new places. Today, I’m going to talk about a foreign city I wish to visit. It’s London, the capital of United Kingdom. Since London is about 7000 km from my hometown, the only viable modes of transport to reach there are water and air. If I were to choose between these two modes, I’d prefer a flight because it’ll take less time as compared to a cruise. From safety and economic points of view as well, I think going by air is definitely the better option.

Talking about the time when I’ll go to London, I haven’t yet decided, maybe in summer this year. I don’t know who I’d take with me but it would probably be some people that are close to me, I feel that visiting a new place is more fun if you’re with your family or friends. I’ll have a word with my parents and friends, whoever wants to come with me is welcome.

Coming to the many reasons why I want to visit London, I guess the main reason would be my fascination with history and art. You see, London is one of the oldest multicultural cities in the world. I’ve read about the changes which transformed this city into a center of history, art, business, and education through many of its conquests of the world. And thus, London is home to world-class museums and art galleries, all having a different and unique story behind them.

Other than that London also happens to have the oldest underground railway system in the world. To visit the most popular tourist attractions of London has been on my bucket list for a long time. These include the London Bridge, National Art Gallery, and the British Museum. I’ve heard that the bakeries in London are some of the best out there. I’d love to see what they have to offer.

After your speech, the examiner might ask you one or two follow-up questions about the same topic. The IELTS Cue Card component takes about 3-4 minutes to complete.

How to Answer this Specific Question: “Describe a Country that You Want to Visit”?

Topic/ question, guidelines to answer this question.

You should say:

What country this is
How you know about this country
When you plan to visit this country

And explain why you want to go to this country.

Think of a country that you have been intending to visit. It could be any country. However, you have to make sure that you have enough knowledge about this country so you would have a lot to discuss and share later on.
The moment you have a country in mind, stick to it and start writing down notes. Remember that you have only a minute to prepare.
Take notes on what country it is and in which continent it is located. Include how you come to know about the country and the things that make it appealing and interesting to you.
Remember to mention too when you plan to go there. Bear in mind that you should not write sentences, just keywords and phrases.
Employ sophisticated vocabulary. Form complex grammar structures as well. These will help you get a high mark in this part of the test.
Write quickly but ensure your handwriting is understandable, by you. The examiner will not mark you based on what and you write on the paper but by how you discuss the topic.
From time to time, do take a look at the notes you have written to ensure that you cover everything. It is fine. You do not get deductions if you do so.

What climate do you prefer, tropical or temperate? Why?

Response: “I think that having a tropical and temperate climate has its advantages and disadvantages. Living in a tropical country does not need a lot of adjustments when it comes to the change in climate in a year because the temperature is pretty much the same. Living in a temperate climate on the other hand is completely different. The variations in temperature are drastic and people need a lot of adjustments to adapt.”

If elected president again, Trump would need special permission to enter several key countries for maintaining foreign relations

Donald Trump may face travel restrictions with his newfound felon status , potentially complicating his presidency if he were to win another term in office.

Thirty-eight nations, counting the United States, bar felons from entry, according to World Population Review . Those bans stand regardless of whether someone is allowed to retain their passport after conviction.

Countries that turn felons away include several of the United States' strongest allies, like the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada — the final of which will host the G7 summit of world leaders in 2025. The list also includes a number of nations at the center of pressing foreign policy issues, such as China, Israel and Mexico.

International governments can, and in some cases would, choose to make an exception for Trump if he requested special permission as president to make a visit.

George W. Bush , who was arrested for drunk driving in the 1970s, ran into issues with Canadian travel restrictions during his presidency while planning an official state visit and, after applying for a special waiver, he was ultimately allowed to enter.

In Bush's case, which still proved tedious, the circumstances were a bit different: the crime happened decades earlier, was only categorized as a misdemeanor and was never tried in a court of law (Bush admitted to driving under the influence upon arrest and got off with a fine and temporary license suspension). It's hard to say whether Trump's new 34 felony convictions would be dealt with in a similar manner.

If Trump were elected to another term in the White House and chose to apply for special travel waivers, the irony would not go unnoticed.

The former president has often characterized foreigners as "criminals," and has campaigned on a promise to tighten U.S. travel restrictions, which would include shutting down the border and instating travel bans on people of certain nationalities and ideologies.

Models Bella and Gigi Hadid are collectively donating one million dollars (£785,000) to support relief efforts, according to their agent.

The money will go to Heal Palestine, Palestine Children's Relief Fund (PCRF), World Central Kitchen (WCK), and United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA).

The sisters have frequently been vocal in their support for Gaza, and their father Mohamed Anwar Hadid is himself Palestinian.

After Hamas's 7 October attack on Israel, Gigi, 29, offered her condolences to those affected.

"My thoughts are with all those affected by this unjustifiable tragedy, and every day that innocent lives are taken by this conflict - too many of which are children," she wrote on Instagram.

"I have deep empathy and heartbreak for the Palestinian struggle and life under occupation, it's a responsibility I hold daily."

She added: "While I have hopes and dreams for Palestinians, none of them include the harm of a Jewish person."

Bella, 27, said in May that she was "devastated at the loss of the Palestinian people and the lack of empathy coming from the government systems worldwide".

The United Nations food agency has said it is unable to feed most civilians in the southern Gaza city of Rafah.

Only 27,000 people in Rafah are currently being reached by the World Food Programme (WFP), according to its local director Matthew Hollingworth.

Roughly one million Palestinians are living in the area, many of them displaced from other parts of Gaza.

"The sounds, the smells, the everyday life are horrific and apocalyptic," Mr Hollingworth told journalists.

"People sleep to the sounds of bombing, they sleep to the sounds of drones, they sleep to the sounds of war, as now tanks roll into parts of central Rafah, which is only kilometers away. And they wake to the same sounds."

A ceasefire proposal consisting of three phases has been outlined by Joe Biden.
