California is full of cities and towns known around the world. Places like Los Angeles, San Francisco, Santa Barbara, and Napa are frequently cited destinations. Then there are all the smaller towns that don’t immediately come to mind, but should. In this latter category, California has hundreds of hidden gems, one of them being Merced.

Located 2.5 hours southeast of San Francisco , Merced is known as the gateway to Yosemite . It feels like a small town, but is sizable enough to offer all the creature comforts travelers enjoy. With a range of accommodations and dining along with a vibrant nightlife, this is definitely a place to stop and enjoy enroute to one of the nation’s favorite national parks.

So whether you have a few hours or a couple of days, don’t just drive past Merced on I-99. Instead, I definitely recommend getting off the freeway and exploring this town. You’ll be glad you did.

1. A Revitalized Downtown

My parents live in Orange, California , a small town well known for its historic and bustling downtown filled with great restaurants, bars, antique shops, and boutiques. Many other cities in California — and the country — aspire to have such a vibrant downtown that attracts not only locals, but visitors. Merced is well on its way to having one.

Like many downtowns, the heart of Merced’s is Main Street. Lined with vintage street lights, Main Street has plenty of restaurants, shops, and theaters. There are also a fair number of vacant spaces, but these are slowly being claimed by new businesses. I look forward to a future trip to explore the new offerings.

I’m always excited to find a used bookstore in my travels, so I was delighted to browse through Second Time Around and purchase a few books. And if you enjoy thrift and vintage stores like I do, don’t pass up Restored Thrift Store and Cloud 9. Merced Multicultural Arts Center regularly hosts free art exhibits and community events, so be sure to pop in.

2. A Historic Hotel

A significant contributor to the revitalized downtown is the recently opened El Capitan Hotel . Part restored historic building and part new build, this hybrid hotel has fully integrated into the community. Its Native Son coffee shop is enjoyed by both guests and Merced residents. The outdoor patio restaurant, EC, has become a popular spot for local meetings and events.

The decor of the rooms hint at the nearby mountains and forests with earthy colors, cabin-like furniture, and wall paintings of pine trees. If a cabin in the woods was combined with luxury amenities, you’d have the El Capitan Hotel. I’m always appreciative of great in-room amenities and this hotel includes pour-over coffee, robes, a clothes steamer, and high-end Beekman bath products.

Throughout the hotel are eclectic pieces of art, either reflecting the local environment or created by local artists. Be sure to ask the front desk for a map of the art including descriptions of each piece and background on the artists.

3. Farm-To-Table Dining

Merced is located in the heart of California’s Central Valley, a region responsible for producing one quarter of all the food in the United States. Virtually anything that a chef could desire is grown or produced locally, making it fertile ground for a farm-to-table fine dining restaurant. Fortunately, that new restaurant opened earlier this year and is called Rainbird .

Helmed by Chef Quentin Garcia, Rainbird offers a five-course tasting menu for dinner. This leisurely meal allows guests to fully appreciate the creative entrees, all thoughtfully garnished and served on unique and artistic dishes.

I was treated to a dinner that began with an amuse bouche, continued with a selection of starters, entrees, and deserts. If you’re counting, that’s only four courses. The fifth course is bread. And while that may sound boring, it certainly was not. A grilled, housemade sourdough bread is presented to the table along with three toppings: honeycomb, sunflower butter, and ricotta cheese. The bread, along with the entire meal, was excellent.

But I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the cocktail program. Carefully crafted cocktails also make use of local ingredients and garnishes. I ordered the Acorn, Rainbird’s take on an old fashioned infused with the smoke from locally gathered acorns. And if you don’t drink, don’t worry, the hotel offers equally creative zero-proof cocktails.

Pro Tip: Rainbird has quickly become popular, so be sure to make advanced reservations. And if you’re not able to come for dinner, consider brunch on Saturday or Sunday instead.

4. Vibrant Theater Scene

While traveling, my husband and I find that we are often at a loss for what to do at night. I carefully plan what we will do during the day and where we will eat at night, but then we’re left with several hours after dinner. Fortunately, Merced has a vibrant theater scene making it easy to make some evening plans.

First and foremost, I’d recommend checking the schedule for the Mainzer Theater , located next to El Capitan Hotel. Built in 1938, the Art Deco architecture and decor alone is worth the visit. But the line-up of acts is also impressive. I had the opportunity to enjoy local singer and guitarist, Scott Patrick, and the Las Vegas cover band, Rock Roulette.

The Merced Theater , built in 1931 in the Spanish Colonial Revival style, is just a few blocks down main street and also has a great line-up of acts. While I didn’t have the chance to see a show here, I did tour the interior and really appreciated the thoughtful restoration. The Merced symphony performs here regularly along with other traveling shows. If you’re in the area, be sure to look up their schedule.

5. Pizza And Wine Tasting On A Farm

Farm-to-table dining continues at Vista Ranch , a family-owned, working ranch that produces 85 varieties of fruits and vegetables. The ranch is about a 15-minute drive from downtown, and while it’s still in Merced, it feels like a different world. In the front is a large grassy lawn filled with wooden picnic tables and in the back is a demonstration garden producing beans, garlic, artichokes, strawberries, blueberries, and much more.

I had the chance to visit Vista Ranch to enjoy both wine tasting and a delicious lunch. We sampled each of their varietals including chardonnay, pinot grigio, zinfandel, and red blend. Lunch included salad, pizza, and pastas, much of it made from the ingredients in the garden. It was a warm, sunny day, perfect for eating and drinking outdoors.

The tasting room is open daily. Vista Nights is offered Thursday and Friday evenings when guests can purchase pizza and wine and sit under the large oak trees enjoying the beautiful garden setting.

6. World’s First Sweet Potato Spirits

I’ve had the chance to visit several distilleries, but my trip to Merced gave me the opportunity to sample a line of spirits made from sweet potatoes. Located in Atwater, about 20 minutes outside of downtown, Corbin Cash is an award-winning craft distillery that produces a range of spirits including vodka, gin, whiskey, and bourbon.

The distiller, David Souza, is a fourth generation sweet potato farmer. He manages the family farm which produces 40 million pounds of sweet potatoes each year. In an effort to diversify the business, David decided to try his hand at distilling using a product he knows well. Fifteen years later, the distillery has expanded to include a tasting room and event space, and distribution of the Corbin Cash spirits is growing.

Guests are welcome to visit the tasting room or book a tour of the distillery and farm.

Before the arrival of interstate highways, travelers from the Bay Area on their way to Yosemite would regularly stop in Merced for at least a night. At the time, travel was arduous, and a break was needed to rest up for the rest of the journey. Merced catered to these often wealthy guests and the downtown flourished. With the arrival of larger highways, getting to the national park was much easier, and the area faltered. But today, the signs of a revitalized downtown are apparent everywhere.

So maybe it’s time to bring back the tradition of enjoying the journey and stopping on the way to Yosemite to appreciate Merced. I know I was glad I did. An historic hotel, excellent food and wine, small, locally-owned shops, and a fun nightlife make this worth at least a few hours, but more likely a whole weekend.

Itinerary at a glance.

We pride ourselves in running a relaxed and flexible schedule. Every Merced River rafting trip is different depending upon the group, other trips on the water, camp locations, and sometimes the weather. The following is a sample of what your trip might be like:

The morning of your trip, you’ll meet up with your trip leader and fellow travelers for a short shuttle ride to the river. At the put-in, your guides will deliver an orientation and safety talk and fit you with your helmet and PFD (wetsuits and splash tops are also included on all early-season and cold-weather trips). Then, we hit the water!
Exciting and drenching, Cranberry Rapid is the first Class IV rapid we encounter and a great way to test our paddle skills. The whitewater action comes at us quickly and rapids like Percolator, Hawaii 5-0, and Balls to the Wall provide big excitement and big laughs as we continue down the Wild and Scenic Merced River.
Come lunchtime, we’ll pull over to a beach and your guides will lay out our famous “build-your-own-masterpiece” deli-style lunch. This is a chance to kick back and revel in a day well-spent outdoors. Beyond the alternating clear pools and frothy whitewater, the surrounding scenery is magnificent. Just outside of Yosemite, this picturesque canyon is adorned with pine forests, colorful wildflowers, rocky ledges, and sandy beaches.
After lunch, it’s back to work and all eyes are on us at Ned’s Gulch where onlookers can view boaters run this wild staircase rapid. On warm days, the slower stretches of cool water that follow are great for an invigorating swim before the finale of the trip—two back-to-back Class IV whoppers—Split Rock and Corner Pocket Rapids
We’ll have a chance to catch our breath before we reach Railroad Flat, where our river trip draws to a close. At the take-out, an OARS shuttle will be waiting to take you back to your vehicle.

The number and variety of boats on an OARS trip will vary based on water levels, the number of participants, and other factors we take into account when planning your adventure. Please be aware that in doing so we will ask you to share boat time with your fellow travelers. We don’t assign boats, nor can we guarantee exactly which crafts we bring, but trust us to provide you with the best possible mix for you and others on your trip.

At lunch, which is provided, we’ll pull over to shore for a delicious riverside picnic. Your guides will lay out an abundant spread of cold cuts, cheeses, veggies, and breads, or perhaps a fresh Caesar salad wrap or tasty taco salad for roll-your-own burritos. Lunch is always accompanied by fruit, cookies, cold water, and lemonade.

Average Air & Water Temperatures

During the spring, the Merced features mile after mile of huge wave trains and long staircase drops, delivering nearly non-stop whitewater thrills. However, it is still suitable for aggressive beginners; its intensity is kept somewhat in check by a general lack of obstacles amidst the rapids and by the calm, glassy pools that provide a reprieve between bursts of whitewater. The Merced’s free-flowing waters—dependent solely on snowmelt, without dams or reservoirs in the way—keep its season short and sweet! Rafting season on the Merced River is generally limited from late April to mid-June but can extend into July depending on the preceding winter’s snowfall.

Before booking your trip with OARS, there are a few important considerations we’d like you to know about.

Physical Requirements: Your outdoor adventure will be an active participatory trip. Please inform us of any physical limitations you may have as soon as possible. If you exceed 260 pounds, please give us a call. Make sure you are exercising frequently in the months leading up to your trip and can meet our Essential Eligibility Criteria .
Whitewater Orientation: To increase your safety, we expect everyone to watch our Whitewater Orientation video before joining us.
Trip Forms: Each participant will need to complete the required trip forms online and submit them no later than 30 days prior to your trip, or immediately if booking within 30 days.

Reservations and Payments

Full payment is required at the time of booking.

Payments can be made by check, money order, eCheck, wire transfer, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover. Prices are in US Dollars, and all payments must be made in US Dollars. Payment of the deposit establishes your acceptance of our complete Terms and Conditions. Individual departures and trip capacity are strictly limited by the managing agency. Your payment is fully refundable for 48 hours, less a 3% processing fee, after making a reservation when you reserve a trip 7 days or more prior to departure.

Cancellations and Refunds

Canceling your trip after your deposit is processed will incur cancellation fees because OARS has absorbed costs on your behalf and will turn others away who would like to book the spaces we’re holding for you. If you must cancel your reservation after the rescission period described above, your cancellation fee will be determined according to the schedule below.

We regret that we cannot make exceptions to the cancellation policy for any reason, including foul weather, poor air quality, wildfire activity, acts of terrorism, civil unrest, or personal emergencies. For these reasons, we strongly urge you to consider purchasing a travel protection plan .

Please note that different deposit/cancellation policies may apply for charter groups. Refer to the group organizer’s confirmation email for details.

Canceled Trips

OARS reserves the right to cancel any trip due to insufficient registration or other factors that make the trip impractical to operate. In such instances, we will inform you at least 7 days prior to departure. Do not make non-refundable travel arrangements until you have verified with OARS that your trip is confirmed.

If a trip must be canceled or postponed due to force majeure (factors outside the control of OARS), OARS will provide full credit for payments made toward future travel, or a refund less a $30/person service fee and any non-refundable payments made on your behalf to 3rd-party suppliers. OARS will make good faith efforts to recover deposits made on your behalf to 3rd-party suppliers; however, we cannot guarantee recovery of any or all of the advance payments made. OARS is not responsible for expenses incurred by participants in preparation for a canceled trip.

If you need to move your reservation to a different trip during the same year, or to a credit account for the following year, there is a $15/person fee up until 30 days prior to departure for a one-time transfer of your payment. If we are 29-7 days prior to your trip departure, there is a $50/person fee to transfer to another trip, within the same year or to a credit account for the following year. If we are 6 days or less prior to departure, 50% of your trip cost can be credited to another trip within the same year only.

Rafting Tour on Merced River near Yosemite

The Merced river tumbles and twists out of Yosemite Valley, gradually mellowing into a raftable whitewater river below the town of El Portal. Offering abundant whitewater confined by a narrow corridor, this river is a must for the rafting enthusiast. Indeed, our Merced River rafting trips offer one of the best white water paddle-boat trips in California.

The Merced’s proximity to Yosemite makes it a popular choice for visitors looking for a half-day or 1-day Class IV rafting trip as part of their visit to the Park. The Merced’s spring and early summer rafting season coincides with peak waterfall viewing season in Yosemite. In later season the bouncing rapids of the river provide a fun way to beat the heat. Our trip meeting location is also close enough to the Central Valley (just 1 hour from Merced) to draw visitors from throughout California. Your head guide will meet you the morning of your trip at our Merced meeting spot, located about 11 miles east of Mariposa, California, and about a 1.5-hour drive west from Yosemite Valley. Minimum age is 10 years old in the spring and lowers to age 7 in summer as the water drops. Participants will be provided with maps, detailed directions, and meeting times. Sierra Mac merged our Merced River rafting operations with Zephyr Expeditions in 1985.

MERCED RIVER RAFTING TRIP DIRECTIONS & MEETING TIMES

Merced Full-day trips meet at 9:30 a.m. sharp! Morning Merced 1/2-day trips meet at 8:00 a.m. sharp! Afternoon Merced 1/2-day trips meet at 1:30 p.m . sharp!

Merced Rafting Meeting Spot . All trips now meet at the Merced Rafting Headquarters, located at 6940 CA Highway 140, Midpines, CA, 95345 . Our secure meeting spot is eight miles from Mariposa, and just across Highway 140 from the Yosemite Bug Rustic Mountain Resort. About a 1 hour and 15 minute drive from Yosemite Valley.

Please note that cell reception is limited in the region. Highways in and around Yosemite can be confusing, and summer traffic can add driving time to the estimates below. It is important that you key into where you are staying, and are clear on your driving directions. It is your responsibility to get to our meeting location ON TIME. There are no refunds for missed trips!

From Yosemite Valley : Take the Highway 140 Exit out of Yosemite Valley heading west toward Mariposa and follow the Merced River downstream. Continue traveling west on Highway 140 towards Midpines. As you pass the turnoff for the Yosemite Bug Rustic Mountain Resort, begin looking for our signs. Our driveway is on the left-hand side of the highway, on the outskirts of the town of Midpines. Driving time from the Yosemite Valley floor is about 1 hour and 15 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes, depending on traffic.

From Mariposa : Take Highway 140 toward Yosemite Valley, passing through the small town of Midpines. Stay on Highway 140, and about a mile past Midpines, begin looking for our signs on the right. Our driveway is on the right-hand side of the highway, right next to the large CalTrans illuminated sign. Driving time from Mariposa is about 15 to 20 minutes depending on traffic.

From San Francisco and Los Angeles , please use the town of MARIPOSA as a destination marker and then follow “FROM MARIPOSA” directions above.

Trip Logistics

One Day Trips meet at 9:30am at our staging area in Midpines (above). After brief orientation, guests are fitted for wetsuits, and vehicles are secured, we take shuttle bus to put-in. We’ll raft for 16 miles with a stop for lunch. Guests arrive back at their vehicles between 3:30 and 5:30, dependent on water levels.

Morning Half-Day Trips (8am) and Afternoon (1:30pm) meet at our staging area in Midpines (above). After a brief orientation, guests are fitted for wetsuits, and vehicles are secured, we then travel by shuttle bus to put-in. Early season trips raft for 11 miles. Late season half-day trips raft 5.5 miles. Half-Day trips do not include lunch.

M emorial Day weekend changes things. The calendar claims that weeks of spring still remain on the books. But for all intents and purposes, it’s hello, summer. The holiday also provides a chance to get out of town for a wonderful stretch.

While backyard barbecues and pool parties are great, there’s a whole lot of Arizona just waiting for you. Take this opportunity to head someplace cool or wet or both. For a few glorious days, you can refresh and recharge. Now you’re ready to face the summer. At least until the July 4 break.

What to do in Flagstaff on Memorial Day weekend

Celebrate wupatki national monument's centennial.

On the quiet prairie northeast of Flagstaff the pueblos of Wupatki National Monument rise like red-boned ghosts above swaying grasses.

The eruption of Sunset Crater in 1085 covered the dry basin with volcanic ash and cinders, creating arable terrain. Soon afterward, Ancestral Puebloans moved in and built the freestanding dwellings that appear almost as natural rock formations.

This year Wupatki celebrates its centennial as a national monument. Short pathways lead to up-close encounters with a handful of these ancient structures. Behind the visitor center, a paved trail leads to Wupatki Pueblo, the largest dwelling in the park. The sprawling three-story ruin contains nearly 100 rooms and straddles an outcropping of sandstone.

Admission is $25 per vehicle and covers both Wupatki and Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument, connected by a scenic road.

Tackle the Flagstaff Extreme Adventure Course

After your visit to Wupatki and Sunset Crater, you’ll have the rest of the weekend to experience Arizona’s summer capital. Why not sample the tree-top thrills of Flagstaff Extreme Adventure Course at Fort Tuthill County Park?

Conquer rope swings, climbing walls, hanging nets, wobbly bridges and ziplines. There are multiple circuits on the adult playground, plus a course designed for children ages 7-11. Adult course costs $60, as does the zipline adventure, or combine the two for $99. Children’s course is $30.

You really should see Canyon de Chelly. Here's how

At Canyon de Chelly National Monument in northeastern Arizona, sheer cliffs plunge hundreds of feet to lush bottomlands lined with crops, pastures and cottonwood trees.

It’s a staggering blend of high drama and pastoral beauty. The scenic canyon shelters thousands of archaeological sites while dozens of Navajo families still live and farm there during warmer months.

Take one day to travel the rim drives for the stunning vistas. The North Rim Drive is 17 miles with three overlooks at prominent cliff dwellings and is best in the morning. The South Rim Drive, 19 miles with seven viewpoints, is even more spectacular, and is especially exquisite when afternoon light floods the canyon.

Then take another day to explore the inner canyon with a Navajo guide. Private operators offer jeep, horseback or hiking outings. You’ll find a list at navajonationparks.org . Park admission is free; there are fees for tours.

Tours also leave daily from Thunderbird Lodge (928-674-5842, thunderbirdlodge.com ) within the park.

Navajo Nation Parks & Recreation also manages Cottonwood Campground near the Canyon de Chelly visitor center. The campground has grills, picnic tables and restrooms. No showers or hookups are available. Maximum RV length is 40 feet. For information call 928-674-2106.

Fool Hollow Lake: Fish, hike or take a swim

Nestled in the pines outside of Show Low, 149-acre Fool Hollow Lake Recreation Area contains one of the loveliest bodies of water in the White Mountains, which is high praise indeed. There’s big open water and isolated coves, quiet marshes and long channels.

This is the kind of lake that makes you want to jump in a kayak and go exploring. Fortunately, you can. Canoe, kayak and paddleboard rentals are available from J&T’s WildLife Outdoors at the east boat launch ramp (928-892-9170, jtwildlifeoutdoors.com ). They also offer a guided pontoon boat tour. You can learn about Adair, the town submerged beneath the water.

Landlubbers can hike the 1.5-mile trail running along the edge of the lake. Anglers try their luck landing rainbow trout, bass, walleye, northern pike and more. And yes, swimming is permitted. Fool Hollow also has campsites for tents and RVs. Reserve your spot online or by calling 877-697-2757. Park admission is $7 per vehicle Mondays-Thursdays and $10 per vehicle Fridays-Sundays and on holidays.

Explore art shows in Prescott

When artists display their work on the big grassy lawn of Prescott’s Courthouse Plaza, you know summer has arrived. Spend a day browsing, listening to music and enjoying the mild temperatures.

The Phippen Museum holds its popular Western Art Show and Sale on the plaza May 25-27. More than 100 artists will have booths set up beneath the big elm trees. Hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday. A Quick Draw Challenge will happen on the north steps of the courthouse from 2-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

With a little planning, you can double your art show fun in Prescott. The Prescott OffStreet Festival is May 25-26 at its new home, Pine Ridge Marketplace, formerly the Gateway Mall. There will be fine art, photography, handmade crafts and food. The fun starts at 9 a.m. both days and ends at 5 p.m. on Saturday, and 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Scenic drive: Traverse more than 460 curves on the Coronado Trail

The Coronado Trail National Scenic Byway, a segment of U.S. 191, twists and turns for 123 miles between Morenci and Springerville in eastern Arizona. The road parallels the New Mexico state line and is the nation’s curviest and least-traveled federal highway.

Expect a 6,000-foot elevation change as the Coronado Trail climbs from cactus-strewn desert to lush alpine meadows and aspen-clad mountains with more than 460 curves along the way. Francisco Vasquez de Coronado is thought to have followed this route centuries ago as he searched for the Seven Cities of Gold.

The road passes the mining towns of Clifton and Morenci and curves around one of the world’s largest open pit mines. It snakes its way up narrow Chase Canyon and switchbacks through scrubby woodland that gives way to dense pine forests as you climb.

The Coronado Trail skirts the edge of the Blue Range Primitive Area, where Mexican gray wolves roam. Stop at the high perch of Blue Vista Point for incredible views and to breathe the cool mountain air. Oxygen at 9,100 feet just seems to have a fragrance all its own.

Beyond Hannagan Meadow Lodge, the road softens its tone. The curves are lazier as it winds through forest to alpine ringed by mountains. From here, continue past brush-covered plateaus and the shimmering waters of Nelson Reservoir to the towns of Springerville and Eagar nestled in Round Valley, an idyllic spot to land on Memorial Day weekend.
