Planning your perfect day from the Lanzarote cruise port can be quite a hassle. There is so much choice in great activities.

Luckily for you, my husband and I just returned from our Lanzarote cruise – and we had the most amazing day.

Keep on reading to find out everything you need about Lanzarote cruise port – and how to plan your perfect day on the island.

Let’s get to it.

As you can see in the Lanzarote Cruise Port Map above, there are three possible spots where your cruise ship might dock.

Arrecife Harbor (New Cruise Port La Boca De Puertos Naos) is the ideal spot. There is a car rental right in front of the terminal and some shops and restaurants. Arrecife is 1 km away.

Cruise Pirs Arrecife and Arrecife Port (Muelle de Los Marmoles Port) are a bit more difficult. There are no amenities whatsoever. From there, you must take a cab or the shuttle bus to reach anything worthwhile. It is about 30 minutes from the city center.

There are paid shuttle services that bring visitors to Arrecife from both terminals. It is too far to walk (30 min), and there is no good walkway. Perhaps you could walk from the Arrecife Harbor Terminal, but I would not recommend it.

I suggest heading to the car rental (marked in blue) and grabbing a rental car for the day. Make sure to reserve in advance, they are incredibly busy on port days. Check out my self-guided day tour schedule below for a great itinerary.

Tour to Timanfaya, Jameos del Agua, Cueva de los Verdes (5/5 Stars) – 9 hours

Grand Tour Lanzarote Experience: the footprint of the landscape (5/5 Stars) – 9 hours

Dolphin Watching Cruise to Lobos Island (4/5 Stars) – 5 hours

Self-Guided Day Tour – Best of Lanzarote

We chose to explore Lanzarote by ourselves. We grabbed a rental car at the Lanzarote Cruise Port and explored from there.

This itinerary for one day in Lanzarote will keep you busy for about 5-8 hours, depending on how long you spend at each stop. We had a short day on the island, so we did it in about 5 hours.

Driving is super easy on the island. The streets are in great shape and the island is not too big. I can totally recommend following our 1-day Lanzarote itinerary:

  • TopCar Car Rental
  • Jameos Del Agua
  • Volcano La Corona
  • Mirador del Rio
  • Mirador de el Risco de Famara
  • Caleta de Famara
  • Charco de los Clicos

Do you need travel insurance in Lanzarote? Yes, travel insurance in Lanzarote is highly recommended. Unsafe roads, water sports accidents, and food poisoning are only a few examples of when travel insurance could come in handy.   EKTA offers worldwide travel insurance  with 24/7 service and no hidden fees or restrictions.

The luxurious and exotic pool area of Jameos del Agua, Lanzarote, nestled within a volcanic rock formation, with lush vegetation and a single palm tree, under a clear blue sky."

Jameos del Agua is a super cool place, kind of like a natural wonder mixed with art. It’s an amazing first stop on your one day in Lanzarote.

It’s part of a long lava tube formed by a volcanic eruption. What makes it special is how it’s been transformed.

The artist César Manrique turned it into a mix of nature and human creativity. There’s a lake with tiny blind albino crabs. Plus, there’s a concert hall, a restaurant, and a swimming pool, all fitting in with the lava and rock.

My tip: It will take you about an hour to check it out. Make sure to bring some money, there is a small entrance fee.

"A road in Lanzarote leads towards the red-brown slopes of a volcano, set against a dramatic sky with billowing clouds, highlighting the island's stark beauty."

Volcano la Corona is another hidden gem in Lanzarote that you need to see next. It’s an ancient volcano that’s been sleeping for ages.

The cool part? It’s the same volcano that created amazing lava tunnels , including the Jameos del Agua I just told you about.

The landscape around it is incredibly beautiful. You can see some rocky terrain and lots of red and black structures.

My tip: You can simply drive by and enjoy the view or even go on a hike there. Make sure to snap some pictures for Instagram, it is a great spot.

the author walks on a black volcanic ash road in Lanzarote, looking towards distant mountains under a vast sky with scattered clouds, embodying a sense of exploration."

Mirador del Rio is another must-visit spot in Lanzarote – I think it was my favorite place on the island. It’s a small viewpoint perched high up on a cliff about 500 meters above sea level.

The view is absolutely stunning! You get to see the Atlantic Ocean, the island of La Graciosa, and other little baby islands.

César Manrique, the same artist who did Jameos del Agua, designed the Mirador. It blends into the environment so well that you might not even notice it at first.

There are two viewing platforms , a museum and a cafe. The view is incredibly amazing and totally worth the small entrance fee.

My tip: I suggest skipping the café since it gets super full there and getting your daily dose of caffeine on our next stop.

us standing atop the rocky viewpoint at Mirador del Rio, Lanzarote, with panoramic views of the sea and La Graciosa island under a bright blue sky with fluffy clouds."

Mirador de El Risco de Famara is another breathtaking spot in Lanzarote. If you’re into dramatic views, you must put this on your one-day in Lanzarote itinerary.

The viewpoint is located on a cliff of the Famara massif. It is this big, rugged mountain range that is so famous.

From this viewpoint, you get to see some seriously stunning sights. You’ll be looking out over the Famara beach, which we’ll be visiting later.

The view of the beach with its golden sand and deep blue water is stunning. Plus, on a clear day, you can also see La Graciosa island.

My tip: Getting there is a bit of a hike, but it’s so worth it. The trail can be a bit challenging, but the views make up for it. It’s a bit less known than some other spots, so it is quite the hidden gem.

The historic Teguise Church in Lanzarote, framed by palm trees and a clear sky, with its iconic bell tower and traditional white-washed walls, as visitors explore the surrounding square

Our next stop is my husband’s favorite place in Lanzarote: Teguise village. It has been voted one of the most scenic villages in Spain.

Teguise has cute, white-washed houses, a lovely town square, and some boutiques and shops. The village is lovely and totally worth visiting.

This is a great place to buy some hand-crafted souvenirs.

My tip: stroll around and check out Jonnie’s bakery for a lovely cappuccino and a sweet delight.

The author in a white tank top and blue skirt playfully poses in the plaza of Teguise Church in Lanzarote, with the church's bell tower and palm trees in the background

Our next stop on this one-day in Lanzarote itinerary is the Caleta de Famara.

Caleta de Famara is a laid-back, charming little fishing village in Lanzarote . It is famous for its stunning beach . This is one of the most impressive beaches I have ever seen.

Famara Beach is a long, sandy beach that is surrounded by dramatic cliffs. It is amazing for swimming, sunbathing and surfing.

You can take a walk along the beach or have some seafood in the little village. We chose to eat in Arrecife instead since we wanted a traditional Spanish tapas lunch.

"The luxurious and exotic pool area of Jameos del Agua, Lanzarote, nestled within a volcanic rock formation, with lush vegetation and a single palm tree, under a clear blue sky."

Charco de los Clicos is another cool spot that you need to see when venturing out from Lanzarote cruise port. It’s located near El Golfo, a small fishing village, and is part of the Timanfaya National Park area.

It’s also known as the Green Lagoon. When you see it, you’ll totally get why. The lagoon has this intense green color, thanks to the algae in the water.

The lagoon is set on a black volcanic beach, which makes the green stand out even more. This is a great spot for a picture.

You can’t swim in the lagoon – it’s protected – but the view is stunning. If you have the time, explore the area around it as well.

my husband in a white t-shirt and baseball cap stands smiling in front of the scenic Charco de San Ginés lagoon, filled with small boats, in Arrecife, Lanzarote, under a partly cloudy sky.

Before heading to the Lanzarote Cruise Port we decided to check out Arrecife. The area around the marina is the most beautiful.

From there you can venture out on a lovely walk into the Old Town or have a sweet lunch next to all the old fisher boats.

Since most passengers have to be back on the ship for the rest of their Canary Island cruise, we are ending our itinerary in Arrecife.

There are so many cute restaurants next to each other, you’ll have plenty of choices. We are Tapas and wine at Salitre and I can recommend it wholeheartedly.

A close-up view of a glass of white wine and two croquettes on a plate, with a blurred background showcasing the Charco de San Ginés lagoon and the Arrecife skyline."

And there you have it, my whirlwind shore day in Lanzarote straight from the cruise port.

From the surreal area of Jameos del Agua to the sleeping giant that is Volcano del Corona, each stop was a chapter from a storybook.

I gazed in awe at the stunning views from Mirador del Rio and loved exploring the village of Caleta de Famara next to the stunning beach.

Lanzarote was one of my favorite stops on our Canary Island cruise with the MSC Divina. We loved the island just as much as Tenerife, and totally recommend a visit.

Cruise ships dock in Lanzarote at the Arrecife port, located in the island’s capital city. This port, known as Puerto de los Mármoles, is situated on the east coast of Lanzarote. It’s well-equipped to handle large vessels and is conveniently close to the city center, offering easy access to Lanzarote’s stunning landscapes and cultural attractions.

In the Port of Arrecife, you can stroll along the vibrant seafront promenade, visit the 16th-century Castillo de San Gabriel, or explore the vibrant city center. You can also rent a car and explore amazing viewpoints, stunning beaches, or volcanic terrains.

Absolutely, visiting Arrecife is definitely worth it! It’s a vibrant and colorful city with a unique blend of modern life and rich history. You’ve got gorgeous beaches like El Reducto, historic sites like Castillo de San Gabriel, and a lively city center with shops and cafes. It’s a great place to experience the local culture, try some delicious Spanish and Canarian cuisine, and just soak in the relaxed island vibe. Whether you’re into history, food, or just chilling by the sea, Arrecife has something for everyone.

Lanzarote Canary Islands Port Guide

Though closer to the western coast of Africa than Europe, the Canary Islands are actually a part of Spain and the closest island to Africa is lovely Lanzarote. On a Mediterranean cruise to Lanzarote, you’ll get to spend the day on an island that is so awe-inspiring with its terrain that it has been featured in many movies. Much of Lanzarote’s most intriguing views were created as the result of volcanic activity on the island. Lanzarote is home to a national park with a unique rocky landscape created by volcanic eruptions hundreds of years ago, as well as interesting caverns to explore that were formed by an underground river of lava. In addition, you’ll find whitewashed villas, relaxing beaches, and excellent dive spots a short distance offshore.

Top sights & attractions for cruises to lanzarote, see a volcano range at timanfaya national park.

That national park with the landscape formed by volcano eruptions is Timanfaya National Park. It is the island’s top tourist attraction and we make it easy to visit by offering shore excursions with experts who can tell you more about the park and surrounding island. In addition to the rocky terrain, the skyline of Timanfaya National Park is a wondrous sight for visitors since it may look like just your normal mountain range, but is actually several volcanoes stretching out across the horizon. This volcanic area of Lanzarote makes up one quarter of the island’s surface.

Art and Nature at the Jameos Del Agua

The first thing you need to know about the Jameos del Agua is the name César Manrique, who was a local artist and architect from Lanzarote. The second is that Jameos del Agua is the setting of a series of caves on the northern end of Lanzarote created by a collapsed lava tunnel. These caves combined with Manrique’s creative eye resulted in an exciting Art, Culture, and Tourism center that is often said to be Manrique’s best work. Within the cave system is a natural lake that is home to the albino crab; the only place you can find such a crab. A café is located next to the lake that is a peaceful place to relax with a coffee and take in the view. Manrique’s addition to the natural surroundings of the cave include a manmade lake next to a garden of palm trees and an interactive museum about the island’s volcanoes. There is also an auditorium built inside the cave that provides incredible acoustics and is the setting for many types of concerts and events.

Walk Through a Lava Tunnel

Another site to see along the same lava tunnel that gives Jameos del Agua its interesting surroundings is Cuevas de los Verdes – or, the Green Caves. In this area of the tunnel, the lava created a nearly 4-mile long volcanic tube that dates back to the eruption of the Monte Corona volcano that happened 5,000 years ago. The Green Caves cover over a mile of this tube and has been turned into an underground trail that is lit a shade of green and feels mystical to walk through.

Monumunto & Museo del Campesino

Another César Manrique site on Lanzarote is the Monumunto, a sculpture located in the heart of Lanzarote´s countryside as a tribute to the island’s farmers and their strong resilience. It is next to the Museo del Campesino, which features exhibits on agriculture and also is home to an underground restaurant and shops featuring local crafts.

Learn More About César Manrique at His Home

By this point you may be quite intrigued by César Manrique and want to learn more about him. You can do so in during a cruise to Lanzarote by visiting the artist’s former home, which is an art display in and of itself. Manrique’s home was built over a hardened lava flow and is a stunning display of whitewashed exteriors, palm trees, volcanic rock, and aquamarine pools. Within the home is a museum of Manrique’s paintings and sculptures. It also has works by other artists, including Picasso.

Learn More About Lanzarote Shore Excursions

Top things to do in lanzarote, relax on the beaches of lanzarote.

Most of the most popular beaches to visit in Lanzarote are located along the southern coast of the island, so if you’re looking for a day of sun, surf, and sand during your Lanzarote cruise, head south. The Puerto del Carmen area is located on the southeast side and are family-friendly beaches with lots of water sports activities and water conditions that are generally safe for swimming. Along Puerto del Carmen’s beaches runs the 4-mile Avenida de las Playas promenade, which plays host to lively bars and restaurants, shops, dance clubs, and even an amusement arcade.

Playa Blanca is another popular beach resort area of Lanzarote and stretches across the southern coast of the island. The actual Playa Blanca beach (also called Central Beach) is great for families with children due to its clean waters and facilities. Nearby Playa Blanca are the golden sands and shops of Playa Flamingo and the white sands and swimmable waters of Playa Dorado.

For a more adventurous beach outing, head to Punta del Papagayo. Also located along the southern coast a short distance from Playa Blanca, Punta del Papagayo is a walking trail that requires a small fee to access. That trail takes you to secluded coves and beaches along six separate stretches of sandy shoreline.

Get Sky High at the Mirador del Rio

If you don’t have time to take a ferry to La Graciosa, which is the nearby tiny island neighbor of Lanzarote, take a journey up to the Mirador del Rio. It is a former naval gun battery that was created by Manrique and has a nature-inspired design. Today, it serves as a tourist attraction located on a high point along the northern coast of the island. It gives you a bird’s eye view of La Graciosa as well as the gorgeous teal sea spanning out in every direction toward the horizon.

The Cactus Garden

If you find the cactus to be an interesting plant that is becoming to behold, then a visit to the Cactus Garden in Guatiza during a cruise to Lanzarote will be a great way to spend your time and will provide you with plenty of photo ops. The garden celebrates the many facets of cacti and the prickly plants flourish under the hot sun of the Canary Islands. The garden has over 1,400 different cacti species to learn more about.

Top Food and Drink Spots Near the Lanzarote Cruise Port

Lanzarote may appeal to you with its volcanoes, artworks, and beaches, but make some time to try some local culinary delicacies, too. Many of the dishes you’ll find in Lanzarote are influenced by popular Spanish recipes, but you’ll also find elements of African and Latin American cuisine, too.

Tapas are a great way to try a variety of flavors during a cruise to Lanzarote, since tapas are small plates of food brought to you that are generally shared by the entire table. Watch out for spicy peppers added to the plates if you don’t have a high spice tolerance!

Another traditional menu item to try is a stew made with spiced meat and vegetables. Rabbit stew is a local favorite. Being an island, fish is an in-demand culinary dish on Lanzarote and you can also find it prepared in a stew (a local specialty is the sancocho made with salted seabream) or more commonly steamed or grilled. For a local fish favorite, try the parrotfish (locally called vieja) cooked in oil and vinegar and served with its scales still on!

Want more traditional favorites? Try the wrinkled potatoes that are boiled in salty water with the skins left on, giving them a wrinkled appearance and hence their name. Mojo sauce is a common side to dip the potatoes in; choose the green one for a more mild sauce as the red one is typically more spicy. One more common side dish you’ll often see is gofio, which is a bread made with toasted maize, wheat, and barley and has a similar consistency to polenta.

For dessert, local goat cheese fried and topped with honey is a tasty treat, as is bienmesabe, a sugary almond cream made with eggs.

For drinks, the local wine is an excellent thing to try if you like sampling new vino. The wine in Lanzarote gets a unique earthy flavor thanks to it being made with grapes grown on the volcanic soil of the island. If liquor is your drink of choice, rum is the most popular Canarian spirit. You also may like to try the Cobana for a tropical flair to your drink since it’s a yellow banana liqueur.

Culture & History of the Lanzarote Cruise Port

The culture of the Canary Islands is rich in art, music, and dance, which is visible through the incredible sculptures and building designs found on the island as well as the many festivals held throughout the year. Lanzarote played a big part in Canarian culture since the town of Teguise was known during colonial times for its musical instruments and traditional dances, and was often considered to be the most important town of the Canary Islands archipelago during that time. San Bartolomé is another town on Lanzarote that helped shape the culture of the island due to its folklore music and dance traditions.

Today, Lanzarote is still big on music and every year it mixes with art and nature when festivals, such as the famous Visual Music Festival, take place within Jameos del Agua and Cueva de los Verdes.

Lanzarote Port Facilities & Location

Your cruise ship will pull into port at the Muelle de Cruceros Pier. It is about a 15 to 20 minute walk to the city center of Arrecife. Along the way, you’ll pass souvenir shops, a supermarket, restaurants, a tourist information desk, and car rental facilities. Shuttle buses are also available, which take about five minutes and drop passengers next to Charco San Gines, which is close to the shopping area of Calle Real and lots of eateries.

Transportation in Lanzarote

When visiting Lanzarote, cruise passengers have several options for how to get around.

Though it’s a small Canary Island, Lanzarote still has a great bus system that can take you to most parts of the island, though it might take a while depending on the route. You may hear the buses referred to as 'guaguas,’ which are the local name given to them. You can purchase tickets at the bus station or from the driver once on the bus for most routes.

A faster way to get around is via taxi, which are typically pretty easy to find by the port and in Arrecife. Taxis in Lanzarote are white with a number on them and a light on top; if the light is green it means the taxi is available.

You can also visit nearby sites by ferry. Multiple daily ferries are offered to La Graciosa from Órzola Harbor. Ferries are also available to other popular Canary islands, including Fuerteventura, Tenerife, and Gran Canaria.

Shopping Near the Lanzarote Cruise Port

The Canary Islands are known for being an excellent place to shop and Lanzarote is no exception. The Canary Islands are a free trade zone within the European Union meaning you can find goods that have a lower VAT rate than other countries in the EU.

Before you go too crazy shopping, though, check what you can bring with you if ending your trip in the EU since there are strict limits to how much you can bring back with you, particularly for alcohol.

While shopping in Lanzarote, you can often find great deals on jewelry, clothing, and electronic items. Perfume and liquor are also popular things to find there due to lower prices – just make sure you plan in advance to get it safely home without breaking in your suitcase!

The best area to shop in Lanzarote is often considered to be the capital city of Arrecife, with an emphasis on the street of Calle Leon y Castillo and its side streets. The area around Calle Leon y Castillo has shopping bazaars with a wide variety of items at good prices.

When visiting villages on the island, keep an eye out for small shops selling local craftwork, including pottery, baskets, lacework, embroidered items, and jewelry. Locally made straw hats and rag dolls in national costume are also great souvenirs. To find a large selection of traditional wares, head to Casa Museo del Campesino in the town of Mozaga.

When at the markets and bazaars, haggling is expected so don’t be afraid to try to strike a bargain.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

Lanzarote is part of Spain, meaning the currency accepted on the island and the rest of the Canary Islands is the euro. You can find ATMs dispensing euros in the port city of Arrecife. Many businesses also take major credit cards, like Visa and Mastercard, though smaller businesses may only accept cash so it’s good to double check before ordering food or some other service if a credit card is accepted if you don’t have any cash on you.

For tipping at restaurants, it’s customary to leave 5% to 15% of the total bill for your server, with 10% being the most common amount left for good service. Service charges are rarely added to the bill in Lanzarote, but if one is then an additional tip isn’t expected. Some restaurants also automatically bring you bread and Mojo sauce and then add the charge for it to the bill; if you don’t want it, you can refuse it when it’s brought over (though it’s a good way to try the Canary Island’s famous Mojo sauce!).

When ordering drinks in bars and cafés, you often sit at a table to order if it is a Canarian-style establishment. It is normal to just leave loose change leftover from your bill (i.e. less than a euro) for a quick one-drink visit. But if you stay awhile or order several drinks, then the typical 5% to 15% (with 10% being the norm) is expected.

If hiring a taxi, the normal tipping custom for taxis in Lanzarote is to round up to the nearest whole note (what a euro bill is called), but never more than 10%.

Welcome to Lanzarote cruise port! (Post updated: March 2024)

Black and golden beaches, white towns standing out of the lunar landscapes, surreal natural marvels, moon-like sceneries… Welcome to Lanzarote, one of the eight main Canary Islands located in the Atlantic Ocean north of Fuerteventura, only 125 km/78 miles off the coast of Morocco. It is the northernmost and the easternmost Canary Island, and the fourth-largest one compared to the others. Although it doesn’t seem to be as urban and crowded as the other Canary Islands, Lanzarote has countless things to offer. In this article, read about:

Lanzarote Cruise Port

Lanzarote Port is located in Arrecife, a charming capital city nestled along the eastern coast of the island. Originally a small fishing settlement, Arrecife has grown into a modern port city that is connected to mainland Africa, Europe, and other islands via ferry. Lanzarote cruise terminal consists of two docks: Muelle De Los Marmoles , and La Boca de Puerto Naos .

Lanzarote cruise port map. Source: google.com/maps/

Muelle De Los Marmoles pier is located around 4 km/2.5 miles from the Arrecife city center and the main shopping street. It takes around 45 minutes to reach downtown in case you decide to walk, which I wouldn’t recommend as there are shuttle buses organized to get you to the center in less than 10 minutes. Depending on the cruise line, shuttle buses can either be free, but in most cases, you need to pay for the ticket. Taxis, car rentals, and a small tourist information desk are available at this terminal.

La Boca de Puerto Naos is the second pier, and you are lucky if your cruise ship docks here because the downtown is around 2 km/1.2 miles away. You can either walk to the city center, which takes around 20 minutes, or you can take the shuttle bus organized by your cruise ship (free or for a fee, depending on the cruise line). The walk to the town is pleasant, although there is not much shade so make sure you bring water and a hat . There are also taxis available, as well as a tourist information desk and car rentals.

Getting Around Lanzarote Port

  • In case your cruise line charges for the shuttle buses, I advise you to take a taxi, as it will probably cost you less than a shuttle bus. Taxi prices are normally displayed in the port and are relatively cheap. Also, before docking, check where your cruise ship docks. If it’s closer to the city, you can also walk.
  • The local currency in Lanzarote is EURO (€), as the Canary Islands belong to Spain, and Spain is in the European Union. The Canary Islands are part of the special territories of the EU, however, they are an EU VAT-free zone, which means that there are no taxes and the shops are duty-free. Local currency and credit cards are widely accepted. ATMs are available in the town.
  • Arrecife is flat and mostly suitable for people with walking difficulties and wheelchair users. It is walkable and easy to navigate, so if you decide to stay in the city, you’ll have a great time.
  • One of the best ways to get around the island is by car. Renting a car is quite affordable and getting around the island is easy. Roads are marked and well-maintained, and it’s relatively easy to find parking wherever you go. Check out Lanzarote rent-a-car deals

Lanzarote is known for its iconic Timanfaya National Park and stunning natural attractions, black sandy beaches and surreal landscapes. The island is relatively small and absolutely beautiful, so it’s well worth exploring. However, if you decide to stay close to the port in Arrecife – there are plenty of things you can do!

Before I share the best things to do in Lanzarote, I invite you to grab your copy of the “ Mediterranean Cruise Port Guide” , the most comprehensive guide to 45 Mediterranean cruise ports (including Lanzarote) , packed with practical information, expert tips & unforgettable experiences! 1. Arrecife City Sightseeing

The capital city of Lanzarote is a lovely place to walk around and offers a wide variety of places to visit. You can visit the main Arrecife attractions on foot, so there is no need for a public bus or transport. Some of the best things to do in Arrecife include:

  • Charco de San Ginés – The beautiful marina and lagoon are one of the most scenic spots in Arrecife. The picture of countless fishing boats floating in the lagoon surrounded by old, whitewashed houses call you to take your camera out and take some great shots of this urban harbor. There are numerous shops, street cafes, tapas bars, and restaurants around, so you can grab a quick coffee while enjoying the views of the picturesque marina.
  • Church of San Ginés (Iglesia de San Ginés) – Dominating the skyline of Arrecife town with its outstanding bell tower, this charming Catholic church was built in the 17 th century and is dedicated to Saint Ginés, Arrecife’s patron saint. The church was built from white stone combined with black volcanic rocks and is beautifully ornated inside.
  • Castillo de San Gabriel – The Castle of Saint Gabriel is located within a 5-10 minute easy walk from the Church of San Ginés. Constructed on the small Islet of the English (Islote de Los Ingleses) in the 16 th century on the site of a former wooden fort, the Saint Gabriel fortress played a major role in the protection of the harbor. You can reach the fortress via two causeways (one is for traffic, one for pedestrians) – all you have to do is cross the Ball Bridge (Puente de las Bolas) known for two cannonballs on top of its pillars, and you’ll reach the castle. Although very small, the fortress is scenic and houses a modest Museum of History. There is a small fee to pay at the entrance.

El Charco de San Ginés - Arrecife marina

  • Calle Leon y Castillo – Shopping in Arrecife is amazing as prices are cheap (EU VAT free area) and the offer is various. Situated across the Ball Bridge, the Calle Leon y Castillo is one of the shopping streets you can check out. It consists of a large number of brand stores, street cafes, a shopping mall, perfume stores, banks… On Saturdays, usually from 9 am to 2 pm, Arrecife Handicraft Market welcomes both locals and tourists in Arrecife’s old town, in the area of El Charco de San Ginés and the Church of San Ginés.
  • Walk along the oceanfront promenade – The palm tree promenade is long and stretches over a mile. It offers breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean and along the way, there are a few beautiful parks where you can sit and relax with the sound of the ocean waves.
  • Sunbathe at Playa del Reducto – Located at one end of a promenade, on the opposite side, Playa del Reducto is the public beach tucked in a bay ideal for swimming and snorkeling. The beach is spacious and sandy and offers umbrella and sunbed rental facilities. If you are into water sports, you can go paddle surfing and windsurfing, or you can play volleyball and football with your friends on the nearby grounds. In the vicinity, you can find cafes, restaurants, and luxurious hotels. To enjoy the panoramic views of the town, head over to Arrecife Gran Hotel & Spa, the tallest building in Lanzarote with a rooftop offering amazing views of the whole island.
  • Casa De La Cultura Agustín De La Hoz – You should visit this magnificent cultural center if you are an art lover and want to learn about Lanzarote’s cultural heritage. Housed in a 19th-century building, the center consists of an art gallery and several exhibition rooms, displaying over 300 paintings of notable Spanish artists. The cultural center is situated only a 5-minute walk from the main pedestrian street Calle Leon y Castillo and the Castle of Saint Gabriel.

2. Timanfaya National Park

If you have never been to Lanzarote before, visiting the Timanfaya National Park should be attraction #1 on your Lanzarote bucket list. It is the second most visited national park in the Canary Islands (after Mount Teide in Tenerife ) and it covers a large part of the southwest of Lanzarote.

Timanfaya National Park consists of 25 volcanoes, but only one of them – the Timanfaya volcano, is still considered active. The most powerful eruptions took place between 1730 and 1736, and they shaped the landscape of the national park that we know today. The entire park is made up of volcanic soil and rocks and the scenery is surreal. The mixture of colors of the volcanic formations and the dunes gives you the impression as if you were on the Moon or planet Mars.

Timanfaya National Park landscape

To preserve it, the large area of the national park can only be visited on a guided bus tour . There are audio tours organized in different languages, as well as various tour offers. There are several Timanfaya National Park attractions and activities you can do:

  • Visit Timanfaya Visitor Center in Mancha Blanca – Located a 30-minute drive from Lanzarote cruise port, this is the museum where you can learn about the history of the Lanzarote volcanoes, see the artifacts and demonstrations of volcanic eruptions, watch the presentations, learn about the flora and fauna of the national park.
  • Fire Mountains camel ride – Timanfaya National Park is also called the Mountains of Fire, due to its extraordinary blend of colors that resembles the mountains on fire. A camel ride tour is one of the most popular things to do, as it allows you to visit the Timanfaya National Park in the most fun and authentic way.
  • Timanfaya National Park trekking – There are several designated trekking paths within the national park. Trekking tours are normally organized in small groups and you need to book them ahead. It is forbidden to go trekking without a tour guide!
  • El Diablo Restaurant – The restaurant is situated on an elevated spot offering spectacular views of the Timanfaya National Park. The building housing the restaurant is formed of several cylindrical one-story structures and is the work of a famous local artist, César Manrique. El Diablo restaurant is entirely enclosed in glass, and the food served there is grilled or cooked using the heat of the volcanoes. It is the only restaurant in the national park, so if you want to grab a bite, do it here. At El Diablo, you can watch the demonstrations of the fire coming out of the ground or the ones forming the steam geyser.

How to Get to Timanfaya National Park from Lanzarote Cruise Port?

  • The distance between the Arrecife cruise port and the Timanfaya National Park is around 29 km/18 miles, or a 35-minute drive. Cruise ships usually offer shore excursions to Timanfaya National Park, but these can be fully booked and crowded. If you prefer a small-group/customized experience, you can book a tour with an independent tour operator .
  • A car rental is another great option if you feel confident driving in a foreign country. The fuel is cheap, and roads in Lanzarote are good and well-marked, so getting around by car is easy. However, only a small portion of the Timanfaya National Park can be explored independently. The largest part is forbidden for private vehicles, and you can visit it only with a guided bus tour. Upon getting to the national park, there is free parking for cars. Make sure you have your driver’s license.

3. Jameos del Agua

Located in the north of Lanzarote, 28 km/17 miles (a 30-minute drive) from Lanzarote cruise port, Jameos del Agua is another popular natural attraction that you absolutely must visit! The word “jameos” refers to the large openings in a lava tube whose roof collapsed as the result of the last volcanic eruption. The whole complex of Jameos del Agua is the architectural masterpiece of the Spanish artist César Manrique who was born in Arrecife at the beginning of the 20 th century.

César Manrique wanted to put nature and art together, and he designed the artistic complex around two volcanic caves found on site. Jameos del Agua is his first center of art, culture, and tourism officially opened in 1977 and consists of unique volcanic tunnels and caverns featuring several attractions such as a Subterranean salt lake ,  White Pool,  Auditorium and La Casa de Los Volcanes.

Jameos del Agua - the view of the White Pool

How to Get to Jameos del Agua from Lanzarote Cruise Port?

  • It takes around a 30-minute drive to reach Jameos del Agua from the Lanzarote cruise dock, and the tour of the complex takes from 45 minutes to an hour. Jameos del Agua guided tour is the best way to visit the site. Normally, the tours include several other places to visit, so you can visit a multitude of Lanzarote attractions at once. Explore Jameos del Agua tours and activities
  • Car rental is cheap, and the road from Arrecife to Jameos del Agua is good. There is a parking lot in front of the complex.

4. La Graciosa from Mirador del Rio

Located in the north of Lanzarote, 34 km/21 miles (a 35-minute drive) from Arrecife cruise port, Mirador del Rio is another interesting structure designed by César Manrique between 1971 and 1973. Built on a 475-meter-high cliff (around 1.600 ft) and integrated into the lava rock like Jameos del Agua, the architectural complex of Mirador del Rio offers spectacular views of the Chinijo Archipelago that consists of La Graciosa and several other islands.

From Mirador del Rio, you can admire the view of La Graciosa island that you’ll see in front of you, Montaña Clara and the tiny Roque del Oeste islands located north of La Graciosa, as well as Alegranza , the northernmost from Lanzarote. If you look down from the viewpoint, on the left side you’ll see Salinas del Rio and Playa del Risco , a wild beach, located at the foot of the Mirador del Rio.

La Graciosa is the largest and the only inhabited island of all. The islands are part of Chinijo Archipelago Nature Park , as over 13 animal species and 20 endemic plant species live there. The narrow channel that divides Lanzarote and La Graciosa is called “the River”, in Spanish “el Rio”, which explains how Mirador del Rio got its name.

The view of La Graciosa island from Mirador del Rio

It takes 30 minutes to up to one hour to visit the complex. There are a few open-air lookout points from where you can take in the views of the islands. However, if you prefer to be in the closed space, Mirador del Rio features a large café-bar with huge glass walls offering amazing views through its widescreen windows. There is a souvenir shop as well. Bring some cash because I am not sure whether they accept credit cards in the cafeteria. There is a small entrance fee to enter Mirador del Rio (if you book a tour, the ticket is normally included).

5. Puerto del Carmen

The famous resort and the main tourist town, Puerto del Carmen is situated a 20-minute drive southeast (19 km/12 miles) from Lanzarote cruise port. It is a popular travel destination featuring a wide range of luxurious hotels , casinos, a 6-kilometer stretch of golden sandy beaches, restaurants, shopping centers, entertainment and recreational areas, and much more!

Puerto del Carmen boasts a vibrant nightlife and most of the shops, restaurants, bars, and clubs are located at Avenida de las Playas , a 7-kilometer long beachside avenue. This is the central hub of the town where the majority of events take place. For those who would like to explore the old town, head over to El Varadero , the old harbor boasting a beautiful marina and a variety of attractions to offer.

If you want to spend a beach day in Lanzarote, I suggest you check out one of the beaches in Puerto del Carmen. All beaches are awarded the Blue Flag for their cleanliness, and they are excellent for water sports activities such as windsurfing, deep-sea fishing, snorkeling, and scuba diving.

Puerto del Carmen in Lanzarote cruise port

Almost all of the Lanzarote beaches have black sand due to the volcanic soil, and here in Puerto del Carmen, they blend in perfectly with golden nuances. The most popular beaches in Puerto del Carmen include Playa Grande ,  Playa Chica ,  Playa Blanca , Playa de Los Pocillos and  Playa Matagorda .

Less than a 10-minute drive from Puerto del Carmen downtown, Rancho Texas – a fantastic animal park featuring bird and sea lion shows, cowboy lasso displays, pony rides, and a splash zone, awaits the families for a fun-filled and unforgettable day in Lanzarote! The distance between Rancho Texas and Lanzarote cruise port is a 15-minute drive. Check out Rancho Texas’ opening hours and prices.

  • There is a local bus from Arrecife to Puerto del Carmen. Check out the Arrecife bus timetables .

6. Los Hervideros

Located on the southwestern coast of Lanzarote, a 40-minute (39 km/24 miles) drive from the cruise ship dock, Los Hervideros is a scenic spot and a popular natural attraction. Los Hervideros features a rugged volcanic coastline known for the impressive sights of powerful waves crashing into sea caves. The place consists of several caves sculpted in lava that are best viewed from the sea, however, several paths lead you to the platforms from where you can take a better glimpse of the caves.

There are no facilities around, and the place is free to visit. You can walk around and take some great shots from different angles, but be careful and do not come close to the cliff edges, as there are no railings or barriers. I visited Los Hervideros once and I liked it a lot, as I am into nature and this place is truly breathtaking. It offers spectacular sea views, and during stormy weather, it’s even more frightening and majestic. There were no waves when I was there, but even without them – the place is beautiful!

Near Los Hervideros, you can visit a couple of other Lanzarote attractions: Salinas del Janubio (salt flats and the natural lagoon) and an old, picturesque El Golfo village , full of fantastic fish and seafood restaurants. Los Hervideros is easy to find, and there is a free parking lot near the cliffs.

7. Aloe Vera Farm

Located near Mirador del Rio, a 35-minute drive (33 km/20.5 miles) north of Lanzarote cruise dock, Lanzaloe Park consists of aloe farms and a store selling various aloe vera products. The volcanic soil in Lanzarote is favorable for aloe vera growth, and there are many aloe farms all around the island.

I’ve been to Lanzaloe Park and I really liked this one. The hosts organized a brief live presentation on aloe vera properties and demonstrated how aloe vera should be applied. The whole scenery was unique, as we were outside, surrounded by fields of aloe, with views of the volcanoes in the distance. The place also has a small store where you can buy different types of products, mostly cosmetics, and the prices are quite affordable. The tour of the aloe vera farm and the store takes around 30 minutes.

Lanzarote Aloe Vera Farm

I would recommend you come here on a guided tour because otherwise you might get lost. The farm is in the middle of nowhere, and I am not sure if you could find it with a car. Cruise ships normally offer at least one shore excursion that includes a stop at the aloe vera farm.

8. La Geria Vineyards

Located a 25-minute drive (24 km/15 miles) south of Arrecife port, Bodega La Geria is a family-operated winery with a long wine-making tradition, set in the heart of the wine region in Lanzarote. Lanzarote was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1993 and its volcanic soil and mild Mediterranean climate are favorable for the growth of specific types of grapes, out of which 75% of vineyard plantings are the Malvasia grape, producing high-quality, sweet wines.

Lanzarote vineyards

Wine has been successfully produced on the island since the early 16 th century and wine cultivation is completely different from what we are used to. There are no lush, green fields of vineyards – instead, wine producers dig wide holes and deep ditches in the volcanic ground and protect those with semi-circular stones known as zocos or abrigos . The ash is fertile and humid enough for grape growing, and all the harvesting and pruning is done by hand.

I highly suggest you visit one of the wineries and taste the most famous sorts of Lanzarote wines. I’ve been to La Geria vineyards and that’s my recommendation as I’ve experienced it myself, but there are also a lot of other wineries on the island (Bodegas el Grifo, Bodega Rubicon Lanzarote, Bodega La Querencia, Los Bermejos Lanzarote, Bodega Vulcano Lanzarote, La Florida Lanzarote, Bodegas Vega de Yuco, Bodegas La Guigan).

If you appreciate the art of winemaking and want the full experience, I suggest you book a Lanzarote wine tour, as it normally includes a visit to several different wineries. As for La Geria vineyards, they offer wine-tasting tours, a great selection of tapas at very reasonable prices, and a gift shop where you can purchase wines, souvenirs, and snacks.

City center of Teguise in Lanzarote, Canary Islands

The small, 15th-century town of Teguise was the original capital of Lanzarote, and colonial mansions still line its cobblestone streets. Costa Teguise is a quiet tourist resort with strict policies about sustainable development, so it's maintained its old charm while also offering visitor amenities.

Celebrate the Artist

You'll see the work of local artist Cesar Manrique around Lanzarote, and you can visit his striking home, built into boulders in a lava field. This extravagant cave now serves as a foundation dedicated to his life and art. Works by his contemporaries, such as Tapies, Millares and Picasso, are also exhibited there.

A whole roasted fish on a silver plate

Local Cuisine

Everywhere in Lanzarote, you'll find fresh fish such as dorado (sea bream), vieja (parrot fish) and cherne (sea bass), often simply grilled and served with small potatoes and local greens. The condiment of choice is red or green mojo sauce, made with chilis grown in the rich volcanic soil — drizzle it over your fish and potatoes, or slather it on bread. Wash it down with glass of local malvasia, a white wine with tropical fruit notes that can be either dry or semi-sweet.

An assortment of traditional Spanish fans

Much of Lanzarote's shopping is centered in the capital city of Arrecife, where you'll find plenty of small, outdoor markets where you should expect to haggle. Look for locally made lacework, pottery, woven baskets, decorative fans and jewelry crafted from the green, volcanic gemstone called olivine.

Lanzarote Shore Excursions

If you’re arriving on a cruise in Lanzarote, you shouldn’t miss the chance to explore our island in one of our volcano tours . Lanzarote offers stunning natural landscapes, from black sand beaches to rugged cliffs and volcanic formations that will take your breath away. Its rich cultural heritage is also worth exploring, with the works of local artist Cesar Manrique transforming the island into a stunning work of art. You can also indulge in delicious local cuisine, immerse yourself in the bustling markets, and explore charming villages.

Here are 4 reasons why it is worth it to book a tour with OkLanzarote instead of with your cruise line:

Cost: We offer tours at a lower cost than the cruise lines, as we do not have the same overhead costs associated with running a large cruise ship.

Authenticity: We provide a more authentic and immersive experience, as we have a deep understanding and appreciation for the culture and history of Lanzarote.

Expert Knowledge: Our official tour guides are local experts and can offer a deeper level of knowledge and understanding of the destination, culture, history, and traditions of the island.

Local Recommendations : We can offer insider recommendations for local restaurants, shops, and attractions that are not included in the cruise line’s standard offerings.

In order to enjoy a nice experience with our tours make sure the tour schedules matches the cruise schedule in Lanzarote so that you are back to the ship on time avoiding the risk of missing the ship’s departure. OkLanzarote nor any of its partners is responsible for any incident in the tour or any other reasons for you to be late to the ship´s departure.

FAQs about tours for cruise passengers in Lanzarote

Why are these the best excursions for cruise passengers.

Cruise excursions in Lanzarote are limited by the time they spend on the island. We propose the two shortest excursions, so you can be sure to be back on the ship on time. On the southern route, you’ll be back in Arrecife by around 5:50 PM and with the excursion that only goes to Timanfaya National Park with the optional camel ride you’ll be back around 2:00 PM.

For the private excursions, we can adapt the schedules even more, but these are interesting to hire for groups of more than 30 people.

Where will I be picked up?

There are two docks in Lanzarote where cruise ships usually dock when they arrive at Arrecife:

  • Los Mármoles port, where 90% of cruise ships dock.
  • La Boca de Naos port.

When making your reservation, you’ll have to pick one of these two options. In the case of Los Mármoles port, you can walk to the pick-up point that we’ll indicate on the reservation voucher. If your cruise ship docks in Boca de Naos, you’ll have to take a taxi to the place that we’ll indicate when you book. In both cases, pick-up will be around 9:10.

What do you see on the cruise excursions?

Lanzarote’s main attraction, the visit to the Timanfaya National Park , is guaranteed on the cruise excursions. In addition, by booking these tours you’ll avoid the long queues to access the park, which can last for up to 3 hours in the high season.

If you have more time, you can take longer excursions and see other places of interest such as Charco de Los Clicos, La Geria, Las Salinas or Los Hervideros.

How do I know which port my ship will dock in?

Some of the main cruise companies that usually come to Lanzarote such as Aida Cruises, Croisi Europe, Phoenix Reisen Gmbh, TUI Cruise, Marella Cruises Ltd., Mystic Cruises S.A, Fred. Olsen Cruise, Costa Crociere, Oceania Cruises Inc, MSC Cruises or Royal Caribbean Group include information in their tickets on the ports of call, which is what you’ll need to be able to book the excursion.

Should I book with OkLanzarote or book an excursion on the ship or cruise company?

Compare prices and routes and decide which excursion to do and where it’ll be best to book.

Lanzarote (Arrecife), Canary Islands

Description.

Lanzarote is the fourth-largest island in the Canary chain. The most easterly of the Canaries, the island lies some 70 miles off the shore of North Africa. Like its neighbours, Lanzarote was shaped by a period of intense volcanic activity. The resulting landscape possesses a stark, near-lunar beauty: Over 300 now-dormant volcanoes left behind petrified lava seas and deep layers of volcanic ash. Today, visitors to these "Mountains of Fire" ride camels through the lava beds and even enjoy a volcano-broiled steak at the park's restaurant. (Subsurface temperatures still reach 800F in the park.) Despite the seemingly barren land scape, island farmers grow abundant crops of tomatoes, onions, melons, and figs in addition to Malvasia, a clear yellow wine produced from malmsey grapes. Lanzarote's rugged landscape, its warm climate, its lack of rainfall, and its beaches have proved attracted to travellers: Tourism dominates the island economy with some 2 million visitors arriving annually.

More about Lanzarote (Arrecife), Canary Islands Points of Interest

Covering over 12,600 acres, this lunar landscape looks much like it did after violent volcanic eruptions spewed chunks of molten lava over the entire area.

This massive four-mile long volcanic tunnel was formed by molten lava and turned into a lush tropical garden, pool, bar and 600-seat auditorium.

The artist's former house and studio sits on top of a volcanic trail, its interior built around five volcanic bubbles. Since 1982, the Foundation has worked for the conservation, research and promotion of Manrique's work.

Lanzarote's most famous viewpoint is situated on Famara Cliff. The stone structure's semi-circular shape and large domed roof offer breathtaking views over the northern coastline, and the island's oldest salt plains.

Built on an old quarry of volcanic ash extraction, the garden features 10,000 types of cactus from over 1,400 distinct species. Outside the entrance stands the towering 26-foot tall green metal cactus, Manrique's last work.

Erected in the 18th century to defend the island against pirate attacks, César Manrique renovated the castle in 1975 and today it holds the International Museum of Contemporary of Art.

Translated as "wine cellar," a bodega is a warm and welcoming wine shop, tasting room or marketplace where visitors can sample or purchase wine.

Just south of Lanzarote, this tiny fishing village boasts warm, golden beaches that overlook the Atlantic. Renowned as the most tranquil in the Canary Islands, the water is perfect for swimming and other water sports.

The ultimate Canary Islands itinerary: 48 hours in Northern Lanzarote

Sensitive development, Canarian culinary pride and a strong artistic heritage are preserving this region’s identity — and helping it build a reputation as the island’s most alluring getaway.

The easternmost of Spain’s Canary Islands, off the south coast of Morocco, Lanzarote is defined by its natural drama. Eerily beautiful volcanic peaks, wind-lashed cliffs and vineyards of ashen soil give way to a rocky, lava-shaped coastline sprinkled with natural pools and deep-gold beaches. The island is protected by UNESCO as both a Biosphere Reserve and a Geopark, and it’s in the wild north that all this natural beauty shines brightest.

It’s impossible to fully grasp modern Lanzarote’s identity without understanding the huge influence of celebrated 20th-century local artist and environmental campaigner César Manrique, who played a major role in keeping the island’s development sensitive.

The handful of tourism-driven beach resorts that many associate with Lanzarote make up just a small part of the island — mostly in the south. In recent years, northern Lanzarote’s rich arts heritage, adventure opportunities and lively watersports activities have started to pull in growing numbers of travellers. The local food scene is flourishing, too, while creative designers and artists are restoring heritage buildings as boutique hotels.

Day 1: Villages, art & vineyards

Morning Begin at the Fundación César Manrique , on the edge of the town of Tahíche. The artist created his home here in the late 1960s by adapting natural lava rock bubbles made by an 18th-century eruption. Often called the Casa del Volcán (Volcano House), Manrique lived here for two decades; its galleries show his paintings and sculptures.

A 10-minute drive north lies Teguise, originally an Indigenous Majo settlement, then the island’s capital after the 1402 European conquest until 1852. Stroll around the historic centre and artists’ studios before lunch at the lively Teleclub de Mozaga ; born as cultural centres in the 1960s, Lanzarote’s teleclubs specialise in traditional cooking.

Afternoon Lanzarote makes some excellent wines and La Geria, the island’s wine region, is worth an afternoon tour. The vineyards are unusual, with vines growing in volcanic ash, traditionally rooted in distinctive deep, circular hollows. In recent years a crop of new wineries has emerged, with younger generations taking over family businesses and fresh wine-makers being drawn to Lanzarote.

A group of people tour a vineyard in Lanzarote. The sun is shining, and in the background mountains scale the scene.

Led by local wine expert Ollie Horton, who’s lived on the island for years, Wine Tours Lanzarote runs small-group trips to innovative independent and renowned bodegas, where you’ll see the grape-growing process and taste wines — including the island’s classic white Malvasía Volcánica.

Evening Push on to the Atlantic-whipped north coast, where sunset illuminates the cliffs above three-mile-long Famara Beach — a vision that perfectly encapsulates Lanzarote’s rugged beauty. The tiny, oceanfront village here, Caleta de Famara, has a laid-back surfing culture, superb restaurants and traditional whitewashed houses with photogenic sky-blue shutters.

Right on the waterfront, stay for dinner at El Risco , which has made a name for itself with its creative Canarian dishes. The former fisherman’s house was remodelled by César Manrique and one of his original 1980s murals still adorns the wall. Diners can also sit out on the small terrace overlooking the Famara cliffs and Isla Graciosa.

Day 2: Palm groves & natural pools

Morning Start your foray into the secluded northernmost stretch of the island in Haría, a cluster of whitewashed buildings hidden in the Valle de las Mil Palmeras — the Valley of a Thousand Palms. The village is known for its busy Saturday-morning artisanal market, but it’s equally rewarding (and quieter) to visit at other times.

Wander past buildings with bright-green doors and shutters, typical of inland Lanzarote, to reach the Casa-Museo César Manrique at the southwest end of town, where the artist spent the final few years of his life. In the late 1980s, Manrique restored and extended a finca in a palm grove into a tranquil rural home, with classic furniture he designed himself and bathrooms drowning in lush greenery. Out the back, his studio is displayed pretty much as it was when he died in a car accident in 1992 .

Afternoon Drive 10 minutes southeast to the relaxed village of Arrieta for lunch overlooking La Garita Beach. One of several superb seafood restaurants in town, La Casa de la Playa is a popular haunt with its ocean-facing terrace and serves up the likes of fresh fish of the day, papas arrugadas (wrinkly potatoes) and seafood rice dishes.

Afterwards, go swimming at Punta Mujeres, a small fishing village just north of Arrieta with a string of locally popular natural pools dotted along the waterfront. You could spend the entire afternoon relaxing here, but make time to dive into a final Manrique creation. Just five minutes’ drive north, the Jameos del Agua is a millennia-old volcanic tube that was reimagined by Manrique in the 1960s. It’s now a spectacular cultural space with bars, restaurants, a lagoon pool and concert hall.

Houses face a sea pool which has naturally formed in the sea bed. The water is greeny blue, and is clear and calm.

Evening A scenic drive takes you back towards the Teguise area for the evening. Follow the LZ202, which loops past the Manrique-designed Mirador del Río lookout with views across to tiny Isla Graciosa, before taking the LZ10 south from Haría via Peñas del Chache, the highest point on the island. Nights in Teguise tend to be quiet, but there’s always a buzz at Cantina Teguise , where Haría-made smoked cheeses, burgers and Padrón peppers are served alongside wines from local bodegas like Vulcano and Bermejos in a restored 500-year-old house.

Or head over to Costa Teguise, a 15-minute drive southeast, for dinner at SeBE , a restaurant that ranks among the island’s finest — it specialises in arroces (rice dishes) and seafood plates such as giant La Santa shrimp and smoked octopus with lentils.

Top three hiking trails in Northern Lanzarote

1. Caldera Blanca Hiking within Lanzarote’s fabled Parque Nacional de Timanfaya is only permitted on short guided routes with limited, pre-booked spots. However, plenty of unrestricted hikes weave through the surrounding Parque Natural de Los Volcanes. The Caldera Blanca loop tracks 5.5-miles up to the rim of an enormous volcanic crater, with views across Timanfaya’s volcanoes.

2. Volcán de la Corona As you venture towards Lanzarote’s northernmost tip, it’s impossible to miss the lichen-covered, 2,000ft-tall bulk of the now-extinct Volcán de La Corona. Follow a 3.7-mile return uphill path from the village of Yé to reach the rim, with views across the volcanic landscapes known as Malpaís de la Corona. Olita Trek & Bike offers excellent guided hikes across the island, including a northern route taking in the Volcán de la Corona.

3. Haría to the Mirador Risco de Famara Some of the most inspiring views on the entire island are from the isolated, spine-tingling Mirador Risco de Famara, halfway between Teguise and Haría. The official Haría Circular trail (6.6 miles) passes through here, or you can hike up along a path through the Barranco Elvira Sánchez valley from Haría and return via the long-distance GR131 (around 2.7 miles each way).

Surfing on Famara Many experienced surfers come to Lanzarote just to catch the famous Atlantic waves in Famara, with the Risco de Famara cliffs looming high above miles of golden volcanic sand, or at other nearby spots like El Quemao, a renowned challenge even for professionals. Famara Beach is known for having reliably good waves almost year-round.

November to February are popular months for those with experience. Complete beginners might prefer the gentler summer waves, but most local surf schools can adapt sessions to your level at any time of year. Surf School Lanzarote is a long-established, International Surfing Association-accredited academy based in Famara, offering small-group classes and courses as well as private sessions for all abilities.

A surfer is wearing a black wet suit and is leaning against a white surfboard whilst looking out onto the water.

Isla Graciosa A narrow stretch of ocean known as El Río (The River) separates the northern tip of Lanzarote from remote Isla Graciosa , which is a superb day-trip destination for adventurous souls. First settled in the 1860s by a handful of families, this tiny island sits within the now strictly protected Chinijo Archipelago, a richly biodiverse pocket of the Canaries that’s home to a wide variety of birds and marine life.

Ferries depart regularly from Órzola (Lanzarote’s northernmost town) for the harbour village of Caleta de Sebo, Isla Graciosa’s only full-time settlement. Most day-trippers head straight for the sandy beaches near the village, but the most rewarding way to explore the island is by hiring a bike. Caleta de Sebo has a few unfussy restaurants, or bring a picnic.

Windsurfing & wingfoiling Strategically positioned on Lanzarote’s windswept northeast shores, the easygoing resort town of Costa Teguise has grown into a popular hub for windsurfing in the Canaries since it was first put on the map in the 1990s. Much of the action centres on golden Playa de las Cucharas, the town’s flagship half-moon beach.

The main season runs from March to September and, due to the geography of the bay, conditions are regularly sheltered enough for beginners. Well-established Windsurfing Club Las Cucharas runs courses for all levels. In recent years, wingfoiling — a sport that combines elements of windsurfing, kitesurfing and surfing — has also boomed here, while paddleboarding offers a more relaxing way to explore on the water.

Local specialties to try in Northern Lanzarote

Lanzarote cheeses Most of the island’s goat’s cheeses are made using the fresh milk of the native cabra majorera, often by family-owned cheese farms that still use traditional methods. Rinds are typically infused with island ingredients such as rosemary and paprika. It’s often served grilled or baked, drizzled with fresh mojo — a local sauce made with coriander, parsley or paprika.

Caldo de millo This maize-based plato de cuchara (spoon dish) made with Canarian potatoes and chickpeas is a classic recipe across the archipelago. In Lanzarote, a local variation of the stew is prepared with pork ribs, often for family gatherings and festivals.

Papas arrugadas In Lanzarote, you’re almost guaranteed to end up feasting on these deliciously salty ‘wrinkly potatoes’. Typically made with locally grown papas bonitas — an ancient variety of Canarian potato — the small, skin-on potatoes are served either as a starter with mojos to dip in or alongside seafood and meat dishes.

Gofio A versatile flour made from toasted grain, gofio was an important staple for the Canaries’ Indigenous Guanche communities. Today, it remains a key ingredient, usually made with wheat or maize, or both. It adds an earthy flavour to soups, stews, cheeses and desserts.

Lapas Limpets were once considered suitable only for those in desperate hunger, which was sadly often the case in the isolated Canary Islands. Now known among chefs for their distinctive texture, these aquatic snails are under strict harvest regulations and only appear on Lanzarote’s menus sporadically. They’re usually served grilled with mojo of parsley or coriander.

day cruises lanzarote

We love hearing from guests about their time in Russia and one comment often hear is how surprised people are by the Russian capital. We can’t say for certain what people expected but we do know that it’s always far removed from what they imagined! It’s been called a modern metropolis, a cosmopolitan city, an historic gem, an architectural treasure and a cultural powerhouse, among other descriptions. Majestic Moscow has always surprised our guests and left them with lasting and fond memories.

Russia’s famous Golden Ring is an archipelago of historic towns surrounding Moscow. Uglich is one of the oldest and was founded under Igor, the last Varangian prince. It once resisted the Mongol invasion and its ancient walls saw the grisly murder of young Dmitri, son of Ivan the Terrible. The impressive Church of St. Dmitri on the Blood, with its classic onion domes and blood red walls, is a fine example of classic Russian architecture. The tour ends with an enchanting choral concert.

This, the oldest city on the Volga River, and now a UNESCO World Heritage site, boasts a wealth of ancient orthodox treasures. The impressive Transfiguration of the Savior, adorned with murals depicting St. John’s apocalyptic visions can be seen in the Spassky Monastery. The Church of St. Elijah the Prophet is decorated with an awe-inspiring selection of rich frescoes. For a real taste of pre-revolutionary Russia, visitors are entertained by a costumed reception at the Governor’s House.

Close to the shores of White Lake once were the ‘tsar’s fishing grounds’. It lies in a place so serene that ancient monks chose to build no fewer than three holy sites here, including the Ferapontov Monastery. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, its chapels boast magnificent frescoes by Dionysius, one of Russia’s most renowned icon painters. The Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery was a refuge for many nobles during tumultuous times and later a fortress that successfully repelled invading armies.

The Karelia region is a vast and naturally beautiful wilderness that spreads all the way from St. Petersburg to the Arctic Circle. The glorious island village of Kizhi consists almost entirely of the traditionally styled wooden buildings of ‘Old Russia’. Among them is the famous Transfiguration Church built in 1714. Remarkably, and in testament to the craftsmen of the time, not a single nail was used in its construction! Kizhi is one of the favorite stops on the river cruise to St. Petersburg.

A typical rural hamlet brought to life by warm and welcoming villagers. Volga Dream guests are invited into local homes to enjoy classic Russian fare, tea with jam and ‘pirozhki’ (pies). Enthusiastic hosts share Russian traditions and the appeal of village life while proudly showing off their scrupulously kept homes and kitchen gardens. The tour continues with a brief bus ride to see a unique World War II memorial and then, for a real glimpse of Russian life, a visit to a local primary school.

Nizhny Novgorod

This was once a wealthy city thanks to its proximity to rich eastern trading routes. During the Soviet era, the city was closed to outsiders because of its military importance. It’s also where many political prisoners were sent to live out their days in exile. The 16th-century Kremlin ramparts offer spectacular views and the city is known for its elaborately decorated churches. For Volga Dream cruise guests, the highlight of the day is an evening folk concert performed by local children.

Sailing along the Volga river, the riverbank gradually ceases to be dominated by Orthodox churches. Instead, beautiful mosques appear as the river crosses into Tatarstan where the first stop is scenic Kazan, the region’s capital. Inside the white walls of the citadel, the famous Kul Sharif mosque and the old Cathedral of Peter and Paul stand side-by-side symbolizing the two faiths’ long and peaceful coexistence in the region. A concert of traditional Tatar music ends the Volga Dream tour in Kazan.

Passing the Zhigulevskie Mountains offers wonderful views from the sundeck before touring the city. One of the key attractions is the fascinating Space Museum, which offers a revealing glimpse of how the Soviet Union pursued its ambitious journey to the cosmos. The town is also noted for its beautiful esplanade, perfect for a relaxed stroll beside the Volga river. This in turn leads to the Samara State Art Museum. Founded in 1897, it is home to a collection of more than 16,000 works of art.

This city is best known for its close associations with cosmonaut, Yuri Gagarin. The Russian hero who achieved worldwide fame as the first man in space lived and studied here. Saratov used to be home to a large German community, a heritage that can still be seen in the local architecture. The Volga Dream tour visits the Radishchev State Art Museum, the first picture gallery in Russia outside Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Originally called Tsaritsyn, the city was renamed Stalingrad from 1925 to 1961 in honor of the USSR’s leader. During World War II, the city’s residents put up a heroic defense, repelling an advancing Nazi invasion. The battle for Stalingrad has gone down in history as a pivotal moment in the bloody conflict on the eastern front. The most ferocious and deadly fighting took place on Mamayev Hill, where an imposing memorial now stands close to the excellent Battle of Stalingrad Panorama Museum.

Saint Petersburg

If Moscow surprises, then St Petersburg delights. Peter the Great founded the city to showcase Russia’s newfound enlightenment. He wanted to show the modern world a cultured and advanced society. In short, he built the city to impress and in that he succeeded splendidly! The striking buildings were designed by some of the finest architects Europe had to offer and even now, the ‘Venice of the North’ never fails to enchant with its spectacular buildings and impressive canal network. It is a city of true grandeur.

Cocktails with the Captain

Commanding any ship is a complex role that calls for a long list of skills. Captains know their vessels inside out as well as well as the routes they sail and when things don’t go to plan, they have to make instant decisions. Above all though, the most important part of the job, underpinning everything they do, is to keep the ship and everyone aboard safe. The Captain’s cocktail party is a great and a wonderful opportunity for passengers and crew to get acquainted as the gets underway.

Matryoshka doll painting

There is nothing more typically Russian than a Matryoshka. It embodies the fact that there’s always something deeper to be found in every aspect of Russian life. Learning the traditional designs and techniques used to decorate these iconic dolls offers a pleasant diversion and some cathartic creativity!

Superb Service & Dining

Our restaurant serves the highest standard of international cuisine, freshly made by our Cordon Bleu Chef. Choose either a sumptuous buffet or set menu for lunch while dinner is always four or five courses with full service. High praise for the exquisite quality of meals is yet another constantly recurring feature in feedback from our guests.

Meet the Professor

From the Mongol hordes to Soviet times, Russia’s history is, like all of Europe’s, a complex web of political intrigue, war and peace, trade and treaties, as well as heroes and villains. Academics devote whole lifetimes to studying Russia’s long past and one of them presents a series of lectures shedding light on everything from Gorbachev to Chekhov, Khrushchev to Ivan the Terrible and of course, contemporary Russia. Our Professor is on board throughout the river cruise for informal conversation.

Beginner’s Russian

The Russian language can be rather beautiful and poetic and we know that many seasoned travelers enjoy trying their hand at different languages. Our onboard teachers provide an introduction to the riches of Russian, so guests can try out a few useful words and phrases on real Russians during the exciting river tours from Moscow to St. Petersburg or from Moscow to Volgograd!

Russian tea tasting

The drink we tend to associate with Russia is vodka, but tea, in fact, is the much more universal beverage of choice throughout the country. Guests will get acquainted with the Russian tea etiquette, a fundamental component of the country's social culture, and enjoy the traditional tea ceremony while cruising from St. Petersburg to Moscow or taking a Grand Volga river tour.

Russian Dinner & Vodka Tasting

All our dining is international but for Russian Dining night, the Chef includes a selection of traditional Russian dishes: Chicken Kiev, Kulebyaka and no Russian table is complete without Borsch. To add to the ‘Taste of Russia’ optional Russian dress, or at least a touch of Russian style, is provided along with enthusiastic help from our staff!

Russian Cooking Class

A plate of pelmeni might not look like much to the untrained eye, but it forms the heart of Russian cuisine and culture. Basically, it's a type of dumpling: small portions of meat and onion wrapped in a thin sheet of unleavened dough and boiled, a little like ravioli. Guests can join a Russian cooking class onboard the MS Volga Dream to learn how to cook this delicious Russian dish.

Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov Piano Recital

Some of the greatest classical music ever written comes from Russia. It’s hard to imagine a more fitting stage for a virtuoso solo recital by our resident concert pianist than the mighty Volga or a better backdrop than the heart of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov’s own serene homeland.

I tried Princess Cruise's premier package. At just $80 a day, it's one of the best deals at sea.

  • I paid about $80 a day for a premier package on a recent Princess Cruise .
  • The fee got me unlimited room service, onboard WiFi, premium desserts, and more.
  • The package was an incredible value and it made my trip feel luxurious.

Insider Today

I've been on 18 cruises and I absolutely love them.

I wake up in a new place every morning and unpack only once. Most of my meals are planned and paid for in advance, and I feel the ocean breeze every time I step out onto my cabin's balcony .

The only letdown is when the bill that arrives the night before each cruise ends contains more charges than I'd kept track of in my head.

I hate the wallet-wrenching surprise of that final invoice, filled with a few more drinks than I remember ordering, the WiFi I couldn't live without, and the specialty dining restaurants I splurged on.

But all that changed the moment I discovered the Premier Cruises' Premier Princess package on Princess Cruises during a family vacation on the Regal Princess in December.

Although my parents, brother, and brother's girlfriend went à la carte with their onboard purchases, my fiancé and I ordered the premier package.

It gave us a huge leg up throughout the trip. Here's why it may be worth considering if you're planning to sail with Princess Cruises.

For just $80 per person per day, we got tons of perks

The premier package costs $80 per day per guest, which amounts to $560 per person on a seven-day sailing (or $1,120 per couple).

At first glance, that sounds like a significant additional line item — but not when you compare the included items to the cruise's à la carte costs.

Princess Cruises' Premier Princess package includes:

  • WiFi: Up to four devices per guest
  • Beverages: Premium drinks (up to $20 each), bottled water, specialty coffee and juice bar
  • Crew appreciation: Mandatory prepaid tips
  • Professional photos: Unlimited digital photos and three prints
  • Specialty multi-course meals: Two per sailing
  • Meals at casual-dining restaurants: Unlimited
  • Premium desserts: Unlimited treats from specialty venues
  • OceanNow: Fee waived for food and drink delivery anywhere on board
  • Room service delivery: Unlimited
  • Fitness classes: Unlimited classes by Xpotential (Pure Barre, Yoga Six, and Stretch Lab)
  • Reserved theatre seating
  • Princess Prizes: Win prizes like wine tasting, onboard credit, and more by opening your door during certain hours

I didn't indulge a ton on my trip but I still saved money with the premier package

Right off the bat, passengers must pay $16/day for crew appreciation (read: gratuities). Crew appreciation is included in my package, so that's $112 of the $560 I paid for the package accounted for.

I'm a light drinker, so I only ordered two alcoholic drinks a day: usually a pre-dinner cocktail ($15 to $20 à la carte) and a glass of wine with dinner ($10).

Related stories

I sometimes got a soda with lunch ($2.50) or a specialty coffee ($3 to $4) at breakfast. That totals $27.50 to $34 a day, or $192.50 to $238 a week for a week of drinks if they were à la carte.

For the record, though, the premier package includes 15 alcoholic beverages daily, so you can drink far more than I did and order over $2,000 worth of drinks in a week.

I also saved on onboard WiFi, an essential for me because I'm always working and sharing my adventures in real time on Instagram .

Since I use both a phone and a laptop, I'd need to connect at least two devices. That would typically cost $40 a day, but up to four devices are included with the package. So that's a savings of $280.

If you're keeping tabs, I've now accounted for more than the cost of the premier package with just drinks, gratuities, and WiFi.

With our savings already more than accounted for, everything else was a bonus

For instance, I enjoy breaking up the monotony of eating in the main dining room with visits to such specialty restaurants as Sabatini's Italian Trattoria, Crown Grill, or The Catch by Rudi. Cover charges at these eateries range from $35 to $39 per person. I dined at two during my sailing, which would have totaled $74 without the package.

Because this was our first family vacation in about a decade, getting family photos was also a priority. So most nights before dinner, we visited the various portrait stations around the ship.

With the premier package, I was given an unlimited number of digital images, so we didn't have to make difficult decisions about which photos to keep and which to discard.

We ended up with more than a dozen digital photos and six prints. On the other hand, my brother and his girlfriend bought some of their couples-only photos and paid $191.75 for five digital photos.

Plus, my fiancé and I indulged in a few premium desserts ($10 each à la carte), I took a fitness class to help balance them out ($30 à la carte), and we made use of the OceanNow service that delivers food or drinks to you anywhere on board ($15 one-time fee).

Overall, my package basically paid for itself, and then some

Overall, I'd estimate we saved at least $275 per person by choosing this package — and we used the included perks rather conservatively since we just aren't big drinkers.

But even if you only plan to have two drinks a day like we did, this package basically pays for itself.

It's worth noting that you can only order the package before you board or through the second day of your sailing. Both passengers in a stateroom must sign up for it.

If one of you doesn't drink alcohol or doesn't care to be connected to WiFi, it probably won't make financial sense to purchase this package.

But the best part of having this package was that I never felt nickeled and dimed and was able to just enjoy a week with my family in the Caribbean .

I didn't stress about putting any extras "on my tab" because I knew my final bill would be a fixed cost I'd already made peace with. And by doing so, I certainly came out ahead.

Putin arrives in neighboring Belarus for a two-day visit with a key ally

Belarus russia.

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived Thursday in Belarus for a two-day visit as part of several foreign tours to kick off his fifth term in office, underscoring close ties with a neighboring ally that has been instrumental in Russia's war effort in Ukraine.

Putin traveled to China earlier this month, and is expected in Uzbekistan on Sunday. Earlier on Thursday, the Russian president hosted Bahrain's King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa in the Kremlin.

In Belarus, Putin is to hold talks with his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko. Lukashenko greeted him on the tarmac, and then the two sat down for a “short conversation” at the airport, the Kremlin reported. Lukashenko promised to discuss “security issues at the forefront, and tomorrow we will discuss economic issues together with our colleagues from the governments.”

The Belarusian leader on Thursday appointed a new chief of the country's military general staff in a move that analysts say is aimed at showing the Kremlin the utmost loyalty of its neighbor and ally.

Russia used Belarus, which depends on Russian loans and cheap energy, as a staging ground in the war in Ukraine, deploying some of its troops there from Belarusian territory. In 2023, Russia also moved some of its tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus.

Maj. Gen. Pavel Muraveyka, who was appointed as chief of Belarus' General Staff and as first deputy defense minister, is known for publicly threatening neighboring NATO members Poland and Lithuania.

In October 2023, he said that Belarus could seize the so-called Suwalki Gap — a sparsely populated stretch of land running about 100 kilometers (60 miles) along the Polish-Lithuanian border. It links Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia with the rest of the NATO alliance and separates Belarus from Kaliningrad, a heavily militarized Russian exclave on the Baltic Sea that has no land connection to Russia.

Military analysts in the West have long viewed the Suwalki Gap as a potential flashpoint in any confrontation between Russia and NATO. They worry that Russia might try to seize the gap and cut off the three Baltic states from Poland and other NATO nations.

“Muraveiko’s appointment is an open challenge to the West and a desire to show Putin Minsk’s complete loyalty and willingness to maintain a strategic partnership with Russia,” independent Belarusian analyst Valery Karbalevich told The Associated Press.

“The deployment of Russian nuclear weapons in Belarus does not leave Lukashenko a strategic choice, turns him into a hostage of the Kremlin and firmly binds Minsk to Moscow’s policies," Karbalevich said.

Both Russia and Belarus began military drills involving tactical nuclear weapons earlier this month. Moscow said its drills, announced publicly for the first time on May 6, were a response to statements by Western officials signaling possibly deeper involvement in the war in Ukraine . Belarus launched its maneuvers involving missiles and warplanes capable of carrying tactical nuclear weapons on May 7; Russia's exercises began this week.

Moscow has emphasized that the tactical nuclear weapons deployed to Belarus remain under Russian military control.

Unlike nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missiles that can destroy entire cities, tactical nuclear weapons intended for use against troops on the battlefield are less powerful. Such weapons include aerial bombs, warheads for short-range missiles and artillery munitions.

The deployment of tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus, which has a 1,084-kilometer (673-mile) border with Ukraine, would allow Russian aircraft and missiles to reach potential targets there more easily and quickly if Moscow decides to use them. It also extends Russia’s capability to target several NATO allies in Eastern and Central Europe.

How to visit Australia without flying: Holland America launches new Grand Voyage

day cruises lanzarote

The long-haul flight can be enough to keep some U.S. travelers from visiting Australia . But a new Holland America Line itinerary will offer an alternate route.

The cruise line’s Grand Australia and New Zealand voyage will sail round-trip from San Diego, California in 2026, taking guests down under and back over 93 days.

"Our Grand Voyages are renowned for connecting guests with the world's most fascinating places while sailing roundtrip from the United States," Beth Bodensteiner, the line’s chief commercial officer, said in a news release . "Our team crafted this itinerary to show guests the parts of Australia and New Zealand they expect to visit, but also included frequently asked for, but rarely visited, ports throughout Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands."

When is Holland America’s Grand Australia and New Zealand voyage?

The cruise will depart on Jan. 4, 2026 aboard the line’s 1,432-guest Zaandam ship.

Where will the cruise sail?

The ship will visit 44 ports in 10 countries. Passengers will make their way to Hawaii first before heading to the South Pacific. The ship will then visit Australia – almost circling the country – and New Zealand, followed by Tonga and French Polynesia on the way back to San Diego.

The itinerary features two days of scenic cruising at the Great Barrier Reef and four late-night departures in Adelaide, Australia and the French Polynesian islands of Moorea, Raiatea and Huahine. Guests will also stay overnight in six ports, including Honolulu, Sydney and Auckland, giving them ample time to explore.

Short vs. long cruises: Which one is right for you?

Russia's Black Sea Fleet Loses Another Warship: Reports

R ussia may have lost another warship in its Black Sea naval fleet, according to new reports, after Ukraine said it had taken out a Russian minesweeper over the weekend.

Several open-source intelligence accounts reported that Moscow may have also lost the corvette Cyclone , or Tsiklon , around Crimea.

Kyiv has not commented on the reports . Newsweek has reached out to the Ukrainian navy and Russian Defense Ministry for comment.

On Sunday, Ukraine's navy said Kyiv had destroyed the Russian minesweeper Kovrovets overnight , but did not offer further details.

"Another bad day for the [R]ussian Black Sea Fleet," Ukraine's Defense Ministry said in a post to social media. Ukrainian forces did not specify where the Russian vessel was located.

Russia had used occupied Crimea as its primary Black Sea base, but consistent Ukrainian strikes—and substantial Russian naval losses—forced Moscow to relocate many of its assets further east in the Black Sea, including to its Novorossiysk base in Russia's Krasnodar region.

Western intelligence has evaluated that Russia has restricted its activity in the western Black Sea, where Ukraine can more easily threaten its fleet.

Ukraine's Navy said back in March that it had disabled or destroyed around a third of the Black Sea Fleet.

"The navy has suffered significantly in the Black Sea," U.S. European Command chief, General Christopher Cavoli, said in April.

Ukraine has targeted a number of Russian vessels since the start of the year, including landing ships and a missile-armed corvette.

Moscow has attempted to fortify its Black Sea bases against Ukrainian drones and missile attacks, using decoys to try to confuse Kyiv's operators, the British government previously assessed. Moscow has also announced it will beef up the protection around its Black Sea fleet with large-caliber machine guns to shoot down incoming naval drones before they strike Russian vessels.

Dmytro Pletenchuk, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian navy, said in late March that Russia had just one combat vessel left in Crimea, which Moscow has controlled for a decade since it annexed the territory from Kyiv. The Tsiklon remained stationed around the peninsula, Pletenchuk said.

The Tsiklon is a Karakurt -class corvette that joined the Black Sea Fleet in July 2023, according to Russian state media. It can fire Kalibr cruise missiles, and was built in the Crimean city of Kerch, the state-run Tass news agency reported.
